By Nick Connell LOST IN YONKERS Arizona Theatre Company at The Herberger Center Neil Simon came back to life again last weekend in spectacular color as Lost In Yonkers opened at Arizona Theatre Company in the Herberger Theater Center in Phoenix. Featuring Tony-Award winning actress and native Phoenician Judy Kaye as Grandma Kurnitz, this Simon masterpiece was alive with wit and wisdom. Judy’s presence was enough to scare away even the alley cats on Van Buren Street. But the real meat and potatoes of this American story wrapped around WWII are the kids in the family. Led by the talented Ryan DeLuca as Jay - and the young rising star of Maxx Carlisle King as Arty, his younger brother - these two stole the show all night! Between teenage angst and fearful duty, Yonkers was made for these cohorts! Add in a touching and heartbreaking performance from Kate Goehring as Bella, and an intense portrayal by Preston Maybank as Louie, and you have the perfect Simon storm ready for full view. You can still catch the Best of the Phoenix Film Festival through April 7th. This year’s festival was another great offering from Chris Lamont and company keeping Arizona and Independent film on the map. There were stellar events including Grant Hill and his new film, “Starting at the Finish Line”; An Evening with Peter Weller filled with surprises; A Conversation with Cuba Gooding Jr. which was a crowd pleaser; and easily the most entertaining and humorous Q&A post screening was with Phil Rosenthal and his documentary, “Exporting Raymond”. This was one of my festival favorites and follows Phil, the creator of the hit television series “Everybody Loves Raymond”, as he embarks on an incredibly funny journey to Russia to translate “Raymond” into a Russian sitcom. This funny and revealing look at Russian culture and the unique characters that are involved in the making of the sitcom is real life comedy. Leave it to Phil to find the irony in all that is Russian and bring it to Phoenix audiences for an up close look at a storyteller’s travels. Also worth a look is the Indy film “Kill The Irishman”. This is the true story of Danny Green, an Irish mobster who single handedly brought down the NY Italian mafia back in the 70’s. This is a rag to corrupt riches story around Danny, an orphan, who fights his way out of poverty in Cleveland to become the most famous TV mobster story of our time. Even Brian Ross from NBC gives a cameo appearance in stock footage from historical archives. It’s well directed by Jonathan Hensleigh, and stars Christopher Walken, Val Kilmer, Vincent D’Onofrio and Ray Stevenson in a stellar performance as Danny Green. There’s no shortage of explosions in this story as we follow thirty six separate bombings through the summer of 76 as Cleveland and NY shakeout the neighborhoods. Rated R.

After more than a dozen screen captures of what appeared to be a steamy sex scene between Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) from “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn” were leaked online last week, author Stephanie Meyer, director Bill Condon and producer Wyck Godfrey released a statement asking fans to refrain from viewing or sharing said images. Meanwhile, Meyer revealed that the cliffhanger separating “Breaking Dawn,” which is being released in two parts, will be when Bella opens her eyes as a vampire. She is also said to be looking into writing a spinoff series that will focus on Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) and his relationship with Edward and Bella’s daughter Renesmee (Mackenzie Foy).
In “Hanna,” Saoirse Ronan plays the titular teenage assassin who faces startling revelations about her existence and questions about her humanity as she makes her way across Europe to carry out a hit. Having been raised in the wilds of Finland, the young girl has an extremely innocent point of view when it comes to more inhabited surroundings in spite of having the strength, stamina, and smarts of a soldier. It was an experience that Ronan herself found rather enlightening. “Hanna is quite a simple-minded, fresh, young girl,” Ronan explains. “She’s not judgmental or prejudiced or anything like that. It certainly made me think of things in a different light.” However, Ronan also learned a lot of about herself as an actress – especially because she had worked with “Hanna’s” director Joe Wright before on the Oscar winning

drama “Atonement.” “Joe never really treated me like I was a kid even when I was 12 years old and he certainly didn’t when we did ‘Hanna’ together,” says Ronan, noting that she has appeared in several other films since “Atonement,” including “The Lovely Bones” and “The Way Back.” “I could see in myself that I had definitely grown as an actor and I think he could see that too.” As a result, Ronan believes she and her director were left with more creative freedom. She likens her working relationship with Wright to that of one between a puppeteer and his puppet, noting that he always knows what strings to pull. And although Ronan hopes to one day soon play a character of Irish decent – much like herself – or tackle her most difficult role yet as a real-life college student, she would not mind reprising her role as “Hanna” in a sequel. “I think it is something that they are talking about because the reaction has been so fantastic,” Ronan adds. “If they were able to develop the character as well as they did in the first one and make her story and her situation as interesting but completely separate from the first movie, then it would be a great thing to do.” Read more from Joseph J. Writer/director Jonathan Hensleigh presents the story with flair and visual captivation and a multi-million dollar look and practical stunts. As a retired filmmaker, I find his cinematic achievement impressive. ‘Black Death’

A monk (Eddie Redmayne) investigates rumors of people being resurrected during an outbreak of the bubonic plague. Screening 8 and 10 p.m. Saturday, April 9 at Madcap Theaters. (R – 102 minutes) Joseph: “‘Taking a uniquely grim look at religion and, in particular, a very vengeful God in medieval times, director Christopher Smith’s ‘Black Death’ is respectably unapologetic and unrelenting pessimism. It is a horror film of a completely different ilk, accentuated by an atmosphere that, alone, sends shivers down your spine.” Grade: B Randy: “The Midnite Movie Mamacita’s selections always pack a punch. Horror fans love her selections and they should enjoy ‘Black Death.’ Starring Sean Bean, this thriller is set during a 1348 plague. The church has lost control and villagers speak of a marshland where the disease cannot reach.”
‘Born to Be Wild’ Dedicated teams in Africa and Borneo save the lives of orphaned elephants and orangutans and prepare them for release back into the wild. Playing exclusively at IMAX Theaters. (G – 40 minutes) Joseph: “Director David Lickley found some simply astounding angles, which are made even more extraordinary through the use of the 3D gimmick. However, whereas the film excels visually, its story – or lack thereof – leaves much to be desired, making this more of an extremely well-shot nature special than a cohesive motion picture.” Grade: C
‘Hanna’ A teenage assassin (Saoirse Ronan) faces startling revelations about her existence and questions about her humanity as she makes her way across Europe to carry out a hit. (PG-13 – 111 minutes) Joseph: “Determining the demographic that will best appreciate ‘Hanna’ is the epitome of a psychological conundrum. However, director Joe Wright’s art-house actioner is an exceptionally unique entertainment experience, even if it does sag a bit midway through. Saoirse Ronan gives a career-changing performance while

‘Kill the Irishman’ Mobster Danny Greene (Ray Stevenson) ignites a turf war in 1970s Cleveland that leads to the collapse of the Mafia in several major U.S. Cities. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 106 minutes) Joseph: “‘Kill the Irishman’ is a relatively generic – albeit remarkably well-made – genre film. Still, writer/director Jonathan Hensleigh knows how to please a crowd, tossing in more cameos from gangster standards than you can possibly count and giving the entire project a stylishly gritty attitude.” Grade: C Stan: “The format of the ‘down & dirty gritty style’ reminded me of the multiple Oscar® nominated ‘A History of Violence’ (2005) as writer/director Jonathan Hensleigh presents the true story of Danny Greene with flair and visual captivation. ‘Soul Surfer’ Teenage surfer Bethany Hamilton (AnnaSophia Robb) returns to competition after losing an arm in a shark attack. (PG – 106 minutes) Joseph: “At times, ‘Soul Surfer’s’ religious themes become a bit overwhelming and preachy, potentially preventing its admirably positive message from reaching a universal audience. However, the inspiring true tale is re-enacted with authentic emotional resonance – especially during those scenes in which the girl struggles to adapt and allocate meaning to her tragedy.” Grade: C
‘Vincent: A Life in Color’ Tourists and locals can see Vincent P. Falk alike, on Chicago’s many bridges as he spins and twirls performing fashion shows in brightly colored immaculate suits for passing tour boats. The documentary follows Vincent over the course of one boat season and begins to reveal a little of mystery surrounding him. (96 minutes) Playing exclusively at the Film Bar in downtown Phoenix, AZ. Stan: “For us Chicagoans who know of the man known as ‘Vincent’, it’s a lighthearted look as we discover that the man behind the fashion, having persevered the adversities of life, has decided to do what makes him happy, and so, he spins on, which are lessons for us all on living life. I looked at both of those and thought that the story was so compelling; I just had to do it. I was moved immediately. Next I called the producer Al Corley, and Bart Rosenblatt who owned the rights to the material and said, ‘I really want to do this, count me in!”

Spring Forward with Beer Events This is the time of the year when many events are happening and fortunately for us, more and more of them are involving great beer. We’ve already survived the Strong Beer Festival, Beer Week, and Great Arizona Beer Festival, but there are still plenty more events happening. So get out your calendars and let’s see what’s doing this spring. Thursday night, April 7th is the Arizona Restaurant Association’s annual Forks and Corks event. Long thought of as a wine only event, over the last couple of years we’ve been seeing more and more good beer showing up. This year look for several beer and food pairing booths. One of the ones we are looking forward to is The District which features chicken and waffles, along with a peanut butter, banana and Nutella sandwich.

Let’s start with a weekend of fun and bocce. Beer for Brains Foundation will host the annual bocce tournament, now known as Bocce Brew Ha Ha at the Millennium Resort in Scottsdale. This event features fun and games and beer and food and even a little bit of bocce. Starting off with a poolside happy hour where you will get to drink some great beer and meet the competition. Afterwards everybody heads over to the spacious front lawn for the first round of the tournament and the totally non-ceremonial tapping of the kegs. Friday ends up with several private tastings hosted by various miscreants throughout the resort. Saturday starts with breakfast and beer followed by bocce, lunch and beer, more bocce and beer, the finals and then a nice dinner held poolside. For details go to www. thebeerforbrainsfoundation.org. Also that weekend, we have several more events to amuse you. For those of you with the spirit of New Orleans in you, head off to Kiwanis Park in Tempe on April 30th for the Great Cajun Crawfish Boil. Put on by the Cajun Cactus Foundation, this is a party and a half. Live mud bugs (as they are known in Louisiana) will be flown in and prepared at the event. The menu will also feature boiled shrimp, fried pickles, dirty rice, red beans and rice, green olive coleslaw, hot links, Krispy Kreme

The weekend of May 14th will be the tenth anniversary of Papago Brewing located in Scottsdale. They will be celebrating Saturday night with a very special beer dinner to be held at Greyhawk. For the travelers in the bunch, this is the weekend to head to Northern California, specifically Boonville, for the annual Boonville Beer Festival. Hosted by the Anderson Valley Brewing Company and held at the Mendocino Fair Ground, this is a festival like no other. With beers from all over the

region, this festival can only be adequately described using the local dialect, so as they say in Boonville, “The bahleststeinberhornin’, chiggrulgormin’, tidrick in the heelch of the Boont Region!” You know you want to go.

One more big event to wrap up festival season, and a big one it is. SanTan Brewing Company will host the Valley’s first ever, Ameri-CAN Festival. This festival will offer nothing but canned beers including many not found in Arizona. Early word is that commitments have been made by 21st Amendment, Surly, Caldera, Maui and many more to send beer to this event. In addition to the festival itself, there will be a competition to determine the top canned beers in America and other fun sidebars to the weekend. Look for this to take place the weekend of May 20th which also happens to be the closing weekend of American Craft Beer Week. Stay tuned at www.santanbrewing.com for all the details. Field Tested A group that achieved significant Major League success is working to change the direction of the D-backs By Greg Salvatore It started in the early mornings when the only other people around are the security guards beginning their morning shifts and the grounds crew getting the many fields ready for the day. It started because they had a passion for their work and a belief that making others better shouldn’t be their only priority. They should make themselves better, too. “I think that the cohesion started Day 1 in the weight room,” Glenn Sherlock said. “At six o’clock in the morning.” This cohesion among D-backs coaches that immediately became so evident started despite the group coming from many different places, but in part because they had so many links. Gibson coached under his longtime teammate Alan Trammell. Trammell coached for Kevin Towers’ San Diego team. Charles Nagy pitched the last year of his career for Towers in San Diego. Don Baylor managed Eric Young (on two different teams), who played the last year of his career for Towers in San Diego. Wilson Valera was a Giants bullpen catcher at the end of his playing career when Matt Williams played in San Francisco. Williams went from San Fran to Cleveland, where he was a teammate of Nagy, and then on to Arizona where he played for Glenn Sherlock. It’s a small world, baseball. This D-backs coaching staff is well connected through Towers, clearly, and the D-backs General Manager had it as his first priority to revamp the team on the field, long before he ever reconstructed the team’s bullpen or bench. The D-backs needed baseball instruction and an attitude adjustment, and he made the necessary moves to get it done. It began by retaining the team’s manager, to whom many players responded with reverence. “I was hoping to play for Gibby again,” starting pitcher Ian Kennedy said, “because I really liked him.” The next move, announced the same day as Gibson’s new contract, was the retention of Glenn Sherlock and Matt Williams. A part of the D-backs’ plans are to regain the attitude and work ethic the team had when it won three division titles and a World Series in a four-year stretch. Williams and Sherlock played key roles on those clubs, Williams as a third baseman and cleanup hitter, Sherlock as the team’s bullpen coach and catching instructor. “He’s as good as I’ve ever seen, the way

his routine his, the rapport he has with the players,” Gibson said of Sherlock. “He originally came from the Yankees and came over here with Buck Showalter. He’s got that pedigree with him. He’s well respected and has become a very good friend of mine, as well.” Williams clearly made a good first impression on Gibson and Towers in his first year as coach. The same meticulous preparation and focused intensity that he showed in an All-Star career came across in his first go-round as a first base coach for the D-backs last year. At the end of the season in an instructional league game at Chase Field—where most of the very few attendees were there to watch pitching prospects Jarrod Parker and Tyler Skaggs—Williams switched boxes and moved to the side of the field where he was most comfortable, the third base side, where he racked up almost 15,000 innings in the field. “He’s hungry; he’s an animal,” Gibson said. “Matty’s a type of person that we’re looking for. His exhaust is what we want to breathe.” When the coaching search expanded to fill the remaining spots, the D-backs found guys at different ends of the spectrum. Two of them had managed in the Major Leagues, two of them had never coached on a big league staff but had extensive experience as players. Don Baylor, the elder statesman of this D-backs group, began his career playing for Hall of Fame manager Earl Weaver, and finished it by playing for Hall of Fame-bound manager Tony LaRussa. In between them, Baylor played for Chuck Tanner, Gene Mauch, Billy Martin and Tom Kelly. When D-backs Vice President and Assistant to the General Manager Bob Gebhard took over as the first GM in Colorado Rockies history, he hired Baylor, who had been a hitting coach in Milwaukee and St. Louis, to be the manager for the Rockies’ inaugural season. In 1995, the team’s third year, they reached the postseason where they lost to the Atlanta Braves who, incidentally, went on to beat Nagy’s Cleveland Indians in the World Series. Alan Trammel took a much less circuitous route to a big league coaching career. In 20 years in the Major Leagues, Trammell played for one team. And for 15 of those years, he played for one manager, he and Gibson’s coaching idol, Sparky Anderson. After a stint as hitting coach with the Tigers and first base coach with the Padres, he returned to Detroit to manage the only franchise he ever knew as a player.
Eric Young coached in the Houston Astros’ minor league system as a baserunning and outfield coordinator last season, after working for ESPN as a Baseball Tonight analyst. This is his debut as a Major League coach. “There are a lot of credentials in that (coaches’) room,” Young said, “and I’m the baby, I’m the minor in the room.” In the search for a pitching coach, Towers not only wanted the usual assortment of skills and experience one would look for, but also took it as an opportunity to find someone who might neatly fit the D-backs starting pitchers. In Kennedy and Barry Enright, the team has right-handers with good control and the likelihood to generate outs by throwing the fastball for strikes, setting up their stronger off-speed pitches in favorable counts. Though Daniel Hudson blew NL hitters away in his rookie season in 2010, even he turns to the changeup as the most dangerous pitch in his arsenal. It just so happened that the Columbus Clippers had a coach who fit that description himself when he played, and would become a hot commodity on the coaching market after helping lead the Clippers to a Triple-A championship last season. Thus, the Dbacks turned to Charles Nagy. “We don’t have power-type pitchers and Charles wasn’t a power-type pitcher,” Towers said. “The style of pitcher that he was is a lot like Kennedy, Enright, Hudson.” The pitchers agree. Kennedy, who said he was overwhelmed with the experience of the coaching staff, talked shop with Nagy over the phone this winter before reporting to Spring Training, then was pleased with his instruction immediately. Enright, who called Nagy one of the most positive people he had ever been around in his short career in baseball, appreciates the fact that his coach can put himself in his pitchers’ shoes. “I know he knows who I am,” Enright said, “and those similarities will help him relate to me and help me relate to him.” A coaching staff would be incomplete without the ability to communicate effectively with every player on an equal plane, and with none of the other seven being a native Spanish speaker, the D-backs wanted to add someone who could help with keeping Latin players in the loop. Enter Wilson Valera. Valera worked for the D-backs last season, as a coach with the club’s Dominican Summer League team. In the 1980s, he played shortstop on minor league squads for the Indians, Mets and White Sox.

When he hung it up as a player, he worked as a bullpen catcher for the Giants and Cincinnati Reds. Valera’s task is to help the coaching staff communicate with the D-backs’ young Latin players, most of whom do speak English but still run into the risk of miscommunication, particularly with colloquialisms that don’t translate perfectly. “Often, Latin kids will acknowledge that, yes, they don’t understand,” Trammell said. “We’re trying to teach everybody the same way but sometimes, with a language barrier, there are words or sentences that get misconstrued.” Misconstruction can happen in other ways, as well. The perception that people have of some individuals gets painted by bygone particulars of their personality that showed when a guy was a player years ago. People who watched Gibson’s raging style when he played probably wouldn’t know that there is a sharp sense of humor underneath all that fire. Someone who watched Matt Williams’ serious or perhaps surly style on the field have probably never seen him going through soft-toss drills with kids. You would be hard pressed to find many nicer people in baseball than Trammell, whose almost constant positive energy makes it easy to forget that he was an All-Star so many times over and could wind up in Cooperstown someday. “My reputation, I’m a nice guy,” Trammell said, “but believe me, I didn’t play 20 years being a nice guy all the time. I’ve got a burning desire. I didn’t try to throw my helmet and stuff outside, but I did things underneath which was the way I was taught.”
Gibson and Trammell have known each other their entire adult lives. They came up together in the Tigers minor league system, Trammell as a second-round pick in 1976 who made his big league debut the next year, and Gibson as a first-round pick in 1978 who made his debut after one minor league season as well. By the middle of the 1979 season, Sparky Anderson, skipper of the decade’s dominant franchise, the Big Red Machine in Cincinnati, took over at the helm of the Tigers. Spend any amount of time talking baseball with either Gibson or Trammell, and you won’t leave the room without at least a mention of the Hall of Fame manager.
The shared ultimate goal that the coaching staff discusses is to bring the D-backs back to a position where they can contend in NL West. Though careful to point out that those things don’t happen overnight, the steps being taken are those that will elicit change.
“It’s a relationship that goes back to the late ’70s when we both came up with the Tigers,” Trammell said of his friendship with Gibson. “We’re similar in age, we’re a year apart, so we have a lot of things in common with music and the things that we do because of our age. Plus, we were taught together by the same person, Sparky Anderson.”
Being a Major League Baseball player gives a man many competitive outlets, from the game every night to contests in batting practice to card games on the plane or in the clubhouse. Some opportunities fade when playing skills erode, but the completive fire never quite burns out. It becomes a bonding element.
When the two retired, long after Gibson had played for other franchises elsewhere, they reunited in Detroit, with their Arizona roles reversed. Trammell was hired as manager of the Tigers, and as his right-hand man he picked Gibson, whose baseball philosophies were so closely tied to his own. “Our personalities are different,” Trammell said, “but with that being said, I played with a guy, Lou Whitaker, and our personalities were different but we played 19 years together and when we were on the field we knew what we were doing. I guess sometimes opposites attract but we are on the same page as far as baseball.”
“These players here, they work hard,” Baylor said. “What we’re trying to do is change the mindset. When you’ve been last place the last two years, it’s not acceptable. It’s just not. You have to crawl and dig your way out. “We’re baseball people,” Nagy said, “and baseball people usually get along well.”
“It’s kind of a fun thing,” Sherlock said. “It’s something we look forward to and it’s a good thing for our coaching staff.”
When the D-backs’ coaches were in the weight room at Salt River Fields before the sun came up most mornings, they had a workout designed for them by D-backs strength coach Nate Shaw that they followed. There was a chance to compete again.
Something to look forward to. Fresh start. The importance of feeling good. The little things that stand out about a daily morning workout apply naturally to the work being done in the clubhouse.
“We’re doing it for our own health and our own well being,” said Trammell, who likes to start his morning with a workout that lets him clear his mind and get a fresh start to the day. “It’s important for us to feel good, and we still like to move around a little bit. Sunday has been designated as a Christian Rock day, with such national acts as, Hyland, After Edmund and Grammy nominated, Fireflight.
