Interview by Stan Robinson

Liam Neeson’s cameo as a Bangkok tattoo artist in “The Hangover: Part II” has been resigned to the cuttingroom floor. As a result of some storyline edits and Neeson’s commitment to “Wrath of the Titans,” director Todd Phillips was forced to scrap the actor’s already filmed scene and re-shoot it with filmmaker Nick Cassavetes in the role. It is not the first time that the Phillips had to re-cast the cameo. Mel Gibson was originally slated to appear in the role but outrage from cast and crewmembers prompted the first replacement before the director could even shoot the scene. “The Hangover:

Horror master director Wes Craven has brought ‘many a scare’ throughout the decades, including the highly successful ‘Scream’ franchise. As the fourth installment of ‘Scream’ continues… Ten years have passed and Sidney Prescott, now the author of a selfhelp book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. Stan: From my experience on set, each director has that ‘special touch’ one experiences while shooting. What did you experience from the ‘Master of Horror!’ Hayden: “You’ll be doing a scene and he’ll come up to you and say ‘Make sure you add a little jump there, or a little reaction here. In the moment you’re kind of like ‘that doesn’t feel like the natural thing to do in that situation. But when its put together, all those little nuances really come together to allow the audience to go on this roller coaster ride with you and feel that fear, and keep them on the edge of their seat, keep them jumping, because they really do live through you. I became a sponge and soaked in every little detail while shooting!” There’s more of our conversation at ScreenScene.org and Examiner.com

Reed portrayed by actress Hayden Panettiere, who’s work I’ve admired in a favorite TV series ‘Heroes’. It’s those finer nuances and the seemingly non-essential moments that Wes Craven brings to a scene. Hayden shares a key experience while shooting, Hayden: “Having not done a horror movie before, I didn’t go in with any expectation of what was going to be harder, or what was going to be easier, to me, I knew to a certain degree it would all be difficult. You don’t take into consideration all of those little things that make it so important for the audience to go with you on this journey, and that’s where someone like Mr. Craven comes in who is so brilliant!

‘Atlas Shrugged: Part 1’ Dagny Taggart (Taylor Schilling), a powerful railroad executive, tries to keep her business afloat while society crumbles around her. Playing exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. (R – 102 minutes) Joseph: “The first part of a planned trilogy bringing Ayn Rand’s 1957 1,168-page dystopian novel to the big screen is all bark and no bite. Director Paul Johansson’s motion picture is so bogged down with complicated political postulation that traditional storytelling gets lost along the way – as do the viewers.” Grade: D

‘The Conspirator’ Alleged conspirators (Robin Wright) stand trial for the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Also starring James McAvoy and Evan Rachel Wood. (PG-13 – 121 minutes) Joseph: “Though exasperatingly slow at times, director Robert Redford’s historical courtroom drama ultimately succeeds through incredibly strong acting from its cast and an overwhelming assumption of importance. Still, save for a few contemporary qualities, it occasionally resembles more of an old-fashioned staged reenactment than a major motion picture.” Grade: C Stan: “Director Robert Redford delivers a powerfully enlightening view of a historical event as we are transported back in time to the late 1860s, capturing the look and feel of the time. We’ve viewed various documentaries and presentations throughout

the years, the riveting performances of Robin Wright, Evan Rachel Wood, and James McAvoy bring to life those pages of history in a ‘you are there’ style as the details of the conspiracy are brought to light!” ” Grade: B

(PG-13 – 113 minutes) Joseph: “Writer/director John Grooters deserves kudos for trying to make a spiritually based motion picture with a relatively secular story. However, thanks to some pretty poor performances and an oddly apathetic filmmaking technique, it is still not enough to appeal to anyone other than church groups and devout Christians.” Grade: D

‘In a Better World’ A man’s pacifist act leads to his son and another boy setting a tragic course of revenge. In Danish with English subtitles. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 113 minutes) Joseph: “Revealing that neutrality has not only a breaking point but also its own unique consequences, Susanne Bier’s Oscar-winning drama is emotionally compelling and profoundly powerful from beginning to end. On the other hand, this cynical critic secretly wishes that Bier had selected a less-tidy ending, thereby resonating a bit more with moviegoers.” Grade: B Stan: “In a Better World’ reminds us all of the impact of our actions as adults has on our children, and that neutrality is truly in the eyes of the

‘Rio’

Joseph: “Between a lively and colorful prologue and epilogue lies a solitary scene – one set at Rio de Janeiro’s famed Carnival parade – that exhibits even remotely the same amount of energy. The otherwise bland and, quite frankly, recycled story does little to ruffle anyone’s feathers, regardless of their age.” Grade: C Stan: “Although delightful and charming with basic themes of caring and loyalty as the core, ‘Rio’ doesn’t gather momentum until the story shifts to ‘Rio de Janeiro’ and Carnival highlighting the title of the movie. The voice actors along with 3D provide an adequate 90 minutes for an afternoon break while at the mall” Grade: C-

Make Your May to Mijana By Chef Rachel Albert Have you ever stopped to ponder the names of the restaurant you dine in? What do they say about the food, philosophy, and flavor of the place? How well does the name fit the establishment? If it’s an ethnic restaurant, does the food represent authentic native cuisine or a loose western rendition? Are the tables populated with people who know that country’s cuisine? In the case of Mijana, the home of authentic Lebanese cuisine located at 1290 N. Scottsdale Road, Suite 107 in Tempe, AZ, the name, food, and philosophy seamlessly fit together. Mijana refers to the poetry verses at the beginning of Lebanese folk songs that are meant to set the tone for the song to inspire love, devotion, morals, or values. You’ll find 11 cold and 14 hot mezza (appetizers), including quail, spinach, meat, and cheese pies, stuffed grape leaves, dips, and Lebanese

sausages, soup, 8 salads, a variety of combination plates, wraps, grilled beef, lamb, chicken, seafood, and vegetable kabobs, and other substantial entrees.

Parents, only 1 in 5 fourth and eighth graders tested last year are proficient readers. BEER AND HEALTH

For many centuries and in many languages, we have raised a glass of beer and toasted to good health, always believing it to be wishful thinking. Recently, scientific study has provided some confirmation that a toast to good health may go beyond the fact that enjoyment, refreshment and good times with good friends can lead to a healthier life. There is growing evidence that moderate consumption of beer brings health benefits. While nothing is conclusive and certainly moderation is the key, there is good news, both on the nutrition and the health side. There is evidence to suggest that light drinking reduces the risk of stroke and heart disease by as much as 20%, or more. Dr. Norman Kaplan,

24

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” a researcher at University of Texas Southwest Medical Center conducted a study of 70,000 health nurses. He reported that those who consume one or two beers each day had a 30-40% lower rate of Coronary Heart diseases and a 20% lower rate of stroke than the control group who did not drink regularly. Healthcare giant Kaiser Permanente conducted a similar study using almost 130,000 people with similar results. Studies have also shown that moderate alcohol consumption may help increase high density lipoprotein or HDL, also known as good cholesterol. Alcohol drinkers in general have statistically significant higher levels HDL or good cholesterol. They also have lower levels of fibrinogen, a protein that is associated with blood clots. Beer, specifically also contains higher

levels of polyphenols which cut levels of LDL or bad cholesterol. The ingredients in beer serve to increases anti-oxidants in blood stream. Barley and other grains, hops and yeast all contain anti-oxidants which survive the brewing process and make it in to the consumer’s blood stream. Anti-oxidants serve to protect the cells against the damaging properties of reactive oxygen, reducing oxidative stress. Oxidative stress has been shown to have a link to cancer, aging, atherosclerosis, and neuron-degenerative diseases (Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s). It doesn’t mean that beer prevents these diseases, but it can help to create an environment that supports resistance of them. Besides the soothing experience of enjoying a beer, there is also scientific evidence to suggest beer can actually lower blood pressure. The alcohol we consume is ethanol, which is shown to have substantial antithrombotic effects, similar to aspirin. A daily aspiring is recommended by many doctors for their patients over 50, especially those at risk for hypertension or heart disease. Dr. Kaplan’s studies at the University of Texas also seemed to support this theory. One of the biggest questions surrounding beer is does it have any nutritional value? It does…beer contains many essential vitamins and minerals. There is quite a variety of nutrients in beer. Richer beers, notably Belgians have long been considered liquid bread. For years monks in Trappist Orders throughout Europe have used rich beers to provide basic nutrients during times of fasting. Specifically, beer contains a substantial amount of B-complex vitamins which provide some very key health benefits. The most powerful of the B vitamins is B6 which lowers levels of Homocysteine which can increase the chance of heart disease. Beer also

contains magnesium, selenium and dietary silicon which improves bone density and can postpone the onset of osteoporosis. Beer not only stands up to wine, but in many ways surpasses it. Wine for years has touted the fact that the flavanoids found in it are healthy, and this is true. However, Beer on average contains the same amount of flavanoids as red wine, and 5 times as much as white. Dark beer contains substantially more than lighter beer, therefore much more than even red wine. Unfiltered beers contain even higher amounts of these good things. Beer also provides a 30% increase in B-6 into the blood plasma, as well as dietary silicon. Very few of the nutrients found in the raw products for wine survive fermentation and filtering, whereas virtually all of them do for beer. This means that even though wine appears to contain many Continued on Page 25...

health ingredients, as a finished product, beer contains substantially more. It can not be stressed enough that moderation is important. One to two beers per day is considered a reasonable amount. It certainly should go without saying that any information provided herein is not to be consid-

ered in lieu of a trained medical opinion. As with most medical studies, correlation does not necessarily equal causation. The evidence may just suggest that healthier people drink beer, rather than beer making people healthier. Regardless of the actual circumstances, it seems like one more good reason to consider a beer at the end of the day.

to bring a new local festival and fundraiser to downtown Phoenix,” said Ryan Guzy, the president of the Tempe Bicycle Action Group (TBAG). “This event will get people excited about riding bikes and being involved in their local community.”

The Tempe Bicycle Action Group and SanTan Brewing Company announced the details of a new bike and beer festival, called the “SanTan Wheelie Jam.” The festival is scheduled for Saturday, April 23, from Noon until 4 pm at Steele Indian School Park in downtown Phoenix. This local festival highlights Arizona Bike Month (April), which promotes the Valley bicycle community, encouraging residents to get on their bikes and have a good time. The event is free and the public is invited to attend.

The day’s festivities will start at 11AM with an informal 3-mile bike ride around Steel Indian School Park in Phoenix for anyone who wants to join. TBAG is encouraging participants to ride their bicycles – road bike, mountain bike, BMX or tricycle – to the event. Or take your bike on the light rail and get off at the Central and Campbell or Central and Indian School stations. The underlying theme of the event is “local” … local bike groups, local beer, local food, local bands, and local bike shops.

“We’re excited to partner with other bicycle advocacy non-profits

Activities include SanTan Wheelie Competition, Bike Polo, Bike Ride/ Paradise, Roller Racing, BMX Demo, Custom Bike Show, Foot Down/Slow Ride, Bike Mechanic Build-Off, Mini/Tall Bike Races, Trials/Fixie Tricks Demo, Bike Demos, Kids Bike Rodeo/Safety Demo, Kids Helmet Decorating, and Bike Blenders. Entertainment, presented by Black Cactus Records, includes musical groups Necronauts, Hello The Mind Control, Liam & the Ladies, Tremulants, and Amen Cowboy. Emcees include Leslie Barton and Tim Tagtmeyer. Local bike shops, such as Global Bikes of Chandler, The Bicycle Cellar of Tempe and Slippery Pig of Phoenix, and bike manufacturers including State Bicycle Co, will show off some cool rides for the spring/summer season.

SanTan Brewing will pour craft beers ($5 for 16 oz. drafts) in their beer garden for the 21 and over crowd. All beer sales proceeds will be donated to several Phoenix groups like Rusty Spoke and AZ Bike Polo, so indulge responsibly. Food will be served on a cash basis courtesy of Boulders on Broadway. TBAG will donate all proceeds to smaller local groups, and is encouraging any non-profit or club that wants to get the word out about their group to set up a table or tent and join the festivities. Tempe Bicycle Action Group is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization working to make bicycling a prominent, safe and convenient form of transportation and recreation in Tempe, Arizona and surrounding areas through education, grassroots events, and civic participation. VALLEY OF THE CAN Ameri”CAN” Canned Craft Beer Festival Coming to Arizona Canned Craft Beer Comes of Age with the Inaugural Event on May 21, 2011. Festival and Expo to Feature Canned Craft Beer Judging, Tasting and Educational Seminars. The inaugural Ameri”CAN” Canned Craft Beer Festival, presented by Whole Foods Market and hosted

by SanTan Brewing Company, is just around the corner. Scheduled for Saturday, May 21, 2011, which will conclude American Craft Beer Week, the festival will have more than 40 local and national breweries participating, and more than 3,000 craft beer aficionados are expected to attend. The event runs from 2 pm through 6 pm in Historic Downtown Chandler, AJ Chandler Park (West) at 3 S San Marcos Place. This festival of canned beers will celebrate the craft beer movement with an awards ceremony, live entertainment, food, Beer Olympics, and a Beer Science Garden, where companies such as CASK, Hop Union, Ball, Breiss and others will showcase

the making of canned beer. Once shunned for imparting a metallic taste to beer, canned beer is making a comeback in the craft beer world. Even larger breweries have reembraced the practice as it really is the best way to transport beer. “This is a celebration of the canned craft beer revolution,” said Anthony Canecchia, owner and head brew master of SanTan Brewing Company. “We believe that the can is the superior package for craft beer and it is our intention to continue educating craft beer drinkers of this fact.”

An unprecedented lineup of national and local breweries will participate (either in person or through World Class Beverages) including 21st Amendment Brewing (CA), Anderson Valley Brewing Company (CA), Avery Brewing Company (CO), Baxter (ME), Big Sky Brewing Company (MT), Blue Moon Brewing Company (CO), Bohemian (UT), Breckenridge Brewing (CO), Buckbean (NV), Caldera (OR), Crispin Cider (MN), Grand Canyon

‘A View From a Fan’ By Stan Robinson I’m one of the contributing movie reviewers to the Film Section of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine. As a break from spending so much time ‘in the dark’ reviewing movies, my alternatives are live events like plays, live jazz, and, live sports! I usually take in a D’Backs game on a Sunday afternoon when they’re in town during the course of a season, but this is a special occasion. It was Friday night, the home opener to start the 2011 baseball season! Anticipation is high for the 2011 season, I attended a couple of the spring training games, a few new faces on the D’Backs team along with returning regulars, and the bullpen really looks to be settling in. As I arrived as part of the sell-out crowd of 48,000 + for the opening night home stand, excitement was in the air, and yes, I was excited when the prominently displayed ‘MLB AllStar Summer 2011’ placards and reminders in full view reminded me that the 2011 All-Star game as well as the other events would take place in this very stadium and I would have the opportunity to experience them live!

36

My first stop is the photography area where sports reporters from various mediums were gathered to take pictures shoot video, and do their interviews. I casually nodded a smile to some of the familiar faces I’ve seen on TV, heard on radio, and read their April 14th, 2011 - April 20th, 2011 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

‘prose’ in sports sections in print! I hung out there for a couple of innings, watching the play on the field and the sports reporters hard at work with the intensity of seasoned professionals. I made my to the press boxes on the upper level (a first for me!) where there were rows of reporters at long tables with laptops, iPads, score sheets, busily typing away documenting every instant of the action as it unfolded on the field. I was reminded of a scene from a stock-trading floor as the crowd in the stands reacted to a play and the reporters, almost in unison, were capturing the moment for posterity! For the 7th inning stretch I wanted to share that experience with the fans in the seats and made my way to one of the sections and sang ‘Take me out to the ball game’. It had new meaning for me although I’ve sung that song countless times throughout my life at baseball games. As I exited with the jubilant fans and the win of 13 – 2 over the Cincinnati Reds to welcome in the 2011 season and yes, the bullpen did come through, nostalgia set in as I remembered the first baseball game my dad took me to so many years ago to see the Chicago White Sox (my hometown) and how much I love the game of baseball! The 2011 season for the Arizona Diamondbacks is off to a great start and there’s more to come from ‘A View From a Fan’, GO D’BACKS!

Super Happy Fun Time Cabaret April 16th

NOW RENTING!

Doesn’t the name just say it all? This Saturday the traveling troupe from Michigan is making their way to the AZ desert in a rented RV. What started out as a small scale show in local bars has evolved into a traveling wonder. Described as Saturday Night Live meets the Rocky Horror Picture Show, prepare yourself for humor, sexiness and a bit of bewilderment. This is not just sexy ladies stripping down to their pasties even though that’s there too, this is live theater with fire playing, hula hooping, dancing, singing, and acting all under a giant veil of humor galore and a 5-piece band. These seasoned cats have had the experience to know what we as an audience want and boy do they deliver. Lend your evening to Mr. Happy Pants, LaLa Vulvaria, Miss Audacious, Velveeta the Cheetah and the rest of the crew for a sultry, comedic and ridiculous time. 8Pm at The Duce.
