Reading Difficulties SOLVED! “GUARANTEED”* Parents, only 1 in 5 fourth and eighth graders tested last year are proficient readers. (National test scores at www.nationsreportcard.com) Meaning they can’t read well enough to master academics at their grade level. Studies show Poor reading skills are the # 1 cause of poor grades, frustration, and a dislike for school. What’s worse? Children believe it is their fault, as do many parents. It is NOT! Don’t believe it! Since 1986 tens of thousands of parents found the Solution for their children. They found ABC Phonetic Reading School® to be: • Accountable: “Guaranteed”* minimum full grade level of reading improvement (on average 1 to 3) in as little as 24 hours or we continue teaching for free until achieved. • Affordable: For a limited time, as little as $25.00 per hour* • Accessible: In Home, Library, Community Clubs, or ABC Phonetic Centers.

“My favorite part of Wyoming is as soon as I hit the border.” Rulon Gardner

THE SOUTHWEST PRIEMIERE OF

April 21st, 2011 - April 27th, 2011 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

THE BROADWAY PALM DINNER THEATER is proud to present the SOUTHWEST PREMIERE of the Award-Winning Off-Broadway Musical SMOKE ON THE MOUNTAIN which has become a world-wide hit with its heartfelt gospel songs and down to earth comic characters. The musical is a soaring celebration of life, love, family and faith – delivering “The Good News” through a magnificent blend of story and vintage blue grass gospel at its finest. SMOKE ON THE MOUNTAIN is guaranteed to get your hands clappin’, your toes to tappin’ and lift your spirit to heaven while laughter rolls through the audience like the morning fog. This mesmerizing, heart- warming production features 30 praise hymns, blue grass and gospel songs such as The Church In The Wildwood, No Tears in Heaven, Jesus Is Mine, Bringing In The Sheaves, I’m Using My Bible For A Roadmap, I’ll Fly Away and When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder. The audience becomes the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church congregation – and going to church has never been so much fun!

After you see this joyful and rousing production of Smoke on the Mountain – you will never again want to sleep in on a Sunday morning! Can I have an Amen?! SMOKE ON THE MOUNTAIN is set in 1938 at the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in rural North Carolina. The Great Depression is coming to an end and The Sanders Family Singers are on the road again – for their first night back on “the gospel circuit” in five years. Of course their bus just broke down, the twins are fighting again, Uncle Stanley is fresh out of prison and Sister June still can’t really sing. Pastor Oglethorpe, a young and enthusiastic minister has enlisted the Sanders family in his efforts to bring his tiny congregation into “the modern world” by holding Mount Pleasants first ever Saturday Night Hymn Sing - featuring new fangled gospel music banjos and fiddles. Opening night jitters combined with the disdain of a pair of spinsters, the church’s benefactors – keep the evening on the verge of chaos. Between songs – the Sanders family members witness and tell stories that relate to their trials of faith. After this night – Mount Pleasant Baptist Church will never be the same! Shout Hallelujah! CAST AND PRODUCTION This production is directed by Paul Kerr who also stars as Burl Sanders – patriarch of the Sanders Family Singers. Mr. Kerr and many members of this astonishing and dedicated ensemble cast have been touching hearts and lifting spirits as they travel

across America performing in Smoke on the Mountain (for as long as 7 years) like musical theater missionaries giving testimony through this inspirational and hilarious musical tribute to America and how we overcome obstacles through perseverance, humor, music, hard work and faith. The cast also stars Andrew Crowe (Dennis Sanders), Justin Droegemueller (Uncle Stanley), Ashley Pankow (Denise Sanders), Greg Pragel (Pastor Oglethorpe), Kiersten Vorheis (June Sanders), April Lee Uzarski (Vera Sanders), Julie Keough (Female Swing) and David Goins (Male Swing). Not only are these performers brilliant comic actors and singers – they are also accomplished musicians and play their own instruments including banjo, mandolin, bass fiddle, ukulele, washboard, piano and guitar With Dominic Lau’s gorgeous, evoca-

tive and clever set design, recreating a classic country church sanctuary – Russell A. Thomson’s equally magical lighting design - and John P. White’s perfectly detailed, well-worn depression era costume design - you will swear on a stack of Bibles that you’re sitting in a church pew, transported back in time, living inside an “American Gothic” Normal Rockwell painting. This is the first time we have written about the food you will eat before the show, in that The Broadway Palm’s Chef Seth Benesh has created for dinner a true miracle to be applauded. Our advice – don’t eat all day before attending Smoke on the Mountain. Come in hungry! Make certain to sample the Chef’s extraordinary Jambalaya which will absolutely heal you! Other favorites were the Ham in Mango Salsa and the Manicotti in Basil Cream Sauce. Ask your dinner companions to save you from the temptation to help yourself to large portions of each of these amazing entrees on the buffet - as you must also save room for the Pot Roast in Ginger Demi Sauce which is as tender as their creamy luscious cheese cake which will make you think you have died and gone to Heaven! Producer Robert Zemeckis and ImageMovers Digital are adapting Chuck Sambuchino’s humor book “How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack: Defend Yourself When the Lawn Warriors Strike (And They Will)” for Sony Pictures Animation. However, unlike the Zemeckis-produced “Mars Needs Moms,” “A Christmas Carol” and “The Polar Express,” an R-rating is being targeted for this effort, which is said to blend live-action with computer-generated animation. Joseph: “Director Jee-woon Kim’s hardcore horror flick could easily be called the Korean ‘No Country for Old Men.’ With its sights set on vengeful violence and the boundless bloodshed that ensues as a result, this one-of-a-kind impassioned thriller is not for the faint of heart. Still, those who can handle it will be in their gory glory.” Grade: A Continued on Page 13...

Stan: “A documentary film is one of the hardest formats of movie making, add to that the subject matter of advertising, branding, and the ever so prevalent product placement in movies, you’re talking a tall challenge. From director Jee-woon Kim (‘Tale of Two Sisters’), ‘I Saw the Devil’ will have you on the edge of your seat at times and cringing most of the way through. What transpires is classic gore – South Korean style. Amazingly shot and surprisingly western, this should appeal to fans of the genre.” Grade: C+

I’ve seen some pretty strange tax deductions in my day, some of which I’ve observed my dad consult with his firm’s tax attorney before proceeding with, but the following deductions make the ones I’ve seen seem typical ! While a claim for a Porsche/company vehicle could certainly be questionable others are deducting breast implants and being allowed by the IRS to do so. PATRON SAINTS OF THE ALMIGHTY PINT

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

How did important religious personages become the patron saints of various things related to beer? Both universal and local Saints have reportedly performed miracles, either during their lives or afterwards, that involved the working class people and beer. Other saints were designated because they represent beer producing and consuming regions.

liquids did not break the fast. Without widespread hotel chains, monasteries served as inn’s for travelers who shared the monk’s provisions, especially their robust, sustaining beers. Eventually, the monks were able to also sell their beers at pubs called klosterschenken, and a flourishing trade developed. To build brand loyalty, the names of the monastery’s patron saint was used. To this day many beers bear the name of a saint.

Centuries ago beer was the daily drink of the people, both because plain water was often polluted and due to beer’s inexpensive, nourishing qualities. Monks brewed beer for themselves as a safe source of hearty sustenance. Monk’s meals were frugal at best, particularly during fast periods. However, consumption of

The procedure which the church uses to name a saint, called canonization, has only operated since the tenth century. Prior to that, since the first century, saints were chosen by public acclaim. While this may have been fairer to the general public, it included information that was both legend or fictitious, and eventually

the Vatican assumed the authority for approving saints. Among the patron saints of brewers, four are extremely well known: Augustine of Hippo, Luke the Apostle, Nicholas of Myra (also known as Saint Nicholas, or Santa Claus) and the Good King

Wenceslas, the latter two also providing a linkage to the winter season of merriment. Augustine of Hippo, now part of Tunisia, who was born in 345 AD, was known for wild living and significant alcoholic beverage consumption prior to his conversion. His complete turnaround and life of moderation contributed to his becoming a patron saint of brewers. Nicholas of Myra, Turkey is believed to have lived in first half of 4th century, and died between 342 and 350 AD. St. Nicholas is associated with the legend of the Three Clerics, a drama about 3 church scholars who stopped for lodging at an inn, where the innkeeper slew them for their money. A disguised Nicholas invoked God’s help to resurrect them and, by doing so, became a protector over travelers and brewers.

include his being a physician and knowing that the beer of the time was healthier than the water of the time, and his ability to mix various herbs together for medicines just as they were mixed for beer. Saint Wenceslas, born in the early 900s AD, promoted the spread of Christianity in Czechoslovakia. Wenceslas became famous through a Christmas carol by J.M. Neale, “Good King Wenceslas”, which has little to do with history but more with Victorian ideals. Because Bohemian hops were so valued, Wenceslas ordered the death penalty for anyone caught exporting the cuttings and obviously endeared himself to the local hop growers and brewers. He became the patron saint of Bohemia and Czechoslovakia and his crown became the symbol of nationalism for the Czechs. By extension he became a patron saint of Czech brewers. Continued on Page 25...

There also was King Wenceslas II in the 13th century, who convinced the Pope to revoke an order banning the brewing of beer, again endearing the Wenceslas name to local brewers.

King Gambrinus is revered by many brewers as a patron saint. According to folk tales, Gambrinus was King of Flanders. Reputed to have invented hopped, malt beer,

the legendary Gambrinus may have actually been Jan Primus, Duke of Flanders, Brabant, Louvain, and Antwerp. Primus, according to the Encyclopedia of Beer, is credited with introducing the toast as a custom. Some others attribute Gambrinus to Jean Sans Peur, known as Ganbrivius. Although there is no evidence of him among the church listings of saints, Gambrinus, called the “King of Beer”, continues to be celebrated by brewers as a patron saint.

Probably the best known Irish saint after Patrick is Saint Brigidwho lived in the late part of the fifth century AD. Known as “the Mary of the Gael,” Brigid founded the monastery of Kildare and was known for spirituality, charity, and compassion. St. Brigid also was a generous, beer-loving woman. She worked in a leper colony which found itself without beer, “For when the lepers she nursed implored her for beer, and there was none to be had, she changed the water, which was used for the bath, into an excellent Continued on Page 26...

married a Kentish prince and the dowry included land across from a brewery. Belgians reportedly sent the first hops to England for use in making beer.

...continued from Page 25 beer, by the sheer strength of her blessing and dealt it out to the thirsty in plenty.” Brigid is said to have changed her dirty bathwater into beer so that visiting clerics would have something to drink. Obviously this trait would endear her to many a beer lover. She also is reputed to have supplied beer out of one barrel to eighteen churches, which sufficed from Maundy Thursday to the end of paschal time. A poem attributed to Brigid in the Brussel’s library begins with the lines “I should like a great lake of ale, for the King of the Kings. I should like the family of Heaven to be drinking it through time eternal.” Saint Amandprimarily operated in the regions now considered northern France and Belgium. He established a score of monasteries, many of which likely produced beer. Considered the father of Belgian monasticism, he is associated with the centers of wine growing and beer brewing. Because of his reputation for hospitality, Amand also is a patron saint of beer and wine merchants. Following the collapse of the roof of an abbey brewery in Flanders, Saint Arnold of Soissons asked God to multiply the stores of beer which were left for the monk’s consumption. When Arnold’s prayer was answered in abundance, the monks and townspeople were prepared to canonize him on the spot. While Arnold of Soissons is best known for

his miraculous provision of beer, he is also credited with a most practical improvement upon the brewing process. While weaving bee skeps for the abbey’s apiary, the abbot realized that the straw cones could be used as a filter to further clarify the brother’s beer. In remembrance of this contribution to the brewer’s art, the saint is often portrayed--as on the certificates of the Belgian Brewers Confederation--in the company of bees with one hand resting upon a bee skep.

“Don’t drink the water, drink beer” warned Saint Arnold of Metz, concerned about the dangers of drinking impure water. He believed that the polluted water caused illness, while the boiled and processed water used for beer was a safer alternative. According to legend he ended a plague when he submerged his crucifix into a brew kettle and persuaded people to drink only beer from that “blessed” kettle. He is reported to have said “From man’s sweat and God’s love, beer came into the world”. Hildegard von Bingen was a benedictine nun, the Abbess of Diessenberg, and a well-known herbalist, mystic and musician. Although she has not yet been canonized, she has been beatified and is considered a saint by many people. Hildegard was a highly enlightened woman who overcame

Arnold of Soissons also is considered the patron saint of hop pickers because of the region in which he preached. Hops originated in Brabant region of Belgium. They became more widespread when a Belgian princess

social, cultural, and gender barriers and became an advisor to bishops, popes, and kings. She used the curative powers of natural objects for healing, and wrote treatises about natural history and medicinal uses of plants, animals, trees and gemstones. Her writings include the earliest known reference to using hops in beer “(Hops), when put in beer, stops putrification and lends longer durability.” For many centuries, brewers have invoked the names of patron saints to bless and protect their beers. Since the early brewing process was not well understood, often times the batch of beer was not fit for drinking. The poor quality was mystically blamed on evil spirits and specifically on “brew witches” or “beer witches.” The last known burning of a beer witch was in the late 1500s. Now that we have vastly improved beer quality, when you quaff your next pint, consider the saintly company with which you are associating and who may be looking over you. May the Saints bless your pint.

GAME! SECTION

ALL SPORTS - ALL THE TIME. UFC! 16 Taps! 22 Screens! Great Food! ‘A View From a Fan’ By Stan Robinson This edition feature’s visits for the April 13th game for the D’Backs vs. St. Louis Cardinals with a loss (15-5), and the April 17th game vs. the World Series champs San Francisco Giants with a win after 12 innings (6-5)! The ‘Fan’ visit this home stand found me concentrating on the pregame activities that not only the players but also the various aspects that the Chase Field personnel are involved before a game. The D’Backs batting practice and regime for preparation to play is a first for me, up close and personal. Various D’Back players were spread around the field, some in the outfield fielding balls as others rotated through batting practice, while

34

others were off to the side being led by one of the coaches doing stretches and loosening up. The eye of the players as they were pitched ball after ball, with the sound of the ball hitting the bat and flying to the outfield, is truly magic. I watched a camerawoman as she intently prepped for the television broadcast of the game. The sound system was ‘tweaked’ for just the right audio over the loudspeaker system as the featured singer for the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ went through her sound check. The grounds crew took to the field and gave it their special touch as it was made ready for play. The highlights for me: D’Backs vs. Cardinals the homerun by the St. Louis Cardinals’ Brandon Buckman

April 21st, 2011 - April 27th, 2011 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

in the top of the 2nd inning when a fan who caught it, threw it back onto the field! And, D’Backs vs. Giants Stephen Drew’s RBI hit in the 12th inning for the 6-5 win over the Giants to cap a long but exciting game! My ‘Fan Tip’ Years ago when my Dad took me to sports events he always brought the radio for the insight and stats from the announcers. To this day at all sports events I bring my Walkman! For the D’Backs it’s tuned to 620 KTAR-AM for the masterful team of Greg Schulte, Tom Candiotti, and Jeff Munn. With the Smartphone apps available, there’s nothing like the game being called in one ear and the roar of

www.16thstreetsportsbar.com 6522 N. 16th Street Phoenix, 85016 (602) 285-5555 the crowd with the Chase Field sound system ‘promptings’ in the other! Stan Robinson, a movie reviewer for the Film Section of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine, enjoys plays, live jazz, and live sports as a balance to the multitude of movies screened for review. Until next time from ‘A View From a Fan’, GO D’BACKS!

The Night Owl Single in the City 2 April 21st There is nothing like a good looking guy who will sell himself for a good cause, if there were more of them than the world would probably be a better place. I am of course talking about the bachelor auction that will be held at Cadillac Ranch in Tempe Marketplace. Valley bachelors will take the stage and strut their stuff for the highest bidder. The entire night of hurt and escalated egos will be to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. There is a minimum donation of $10 or a $25 VIP donation. Mingling with the bachelors starts at 7pm with the boys taking the stage at 9pm. Get your ballots ready ladies. 480.894.1111

These days everyone seems to be about going green and sustainability, and for good reason too. Now you may not be on that band wagon yet but I bet there is one that you are on, the beer band wagon. Each year the San Tan Brewing company and the Tempe Bicycle Action Group team up to bring you the Wheelie Jam. A day full of tasty food from local restaurants, a selection of cold San Tan craft beers and a bunch of entertainment. The idea is to emphasize the bicycle in the major role it can play in sustainability. Wheelie competitions, BMX demos and a custom bike show may make you rethink taking your car everywhere. The Keltic Cowboys will be playing live all day so come enjoy some brews and some bikes. Free event. 12pm-4pm at Steele Indian School Park. www.biketempe.org

Though Combs is known for his contribution to hip hop, he is also a passionate fan of dance music, often traveling to global hotspots like Ibiza and Berlin to take in new sounds emerging from the techno scene. Blending elements of UK grime, Mediterranean techno and the 808s of American hip hop, intertwined with dark, atmospheric beats and a cinematic back story, this new project represents an entirely new side of the rap impresario. Fans may think they know him, but those in attendance will certainly experience an entirely new Combs - and an entirely new sound as Diddy-Dirty Money is set to redefine dance music for the new decade. Iron Maidens Rock Phoenix for Charity Saturday Fifteen bucks will get an entire day of entertainment this Saturday when Alice Cooperstown hosts the Arizona Tribute Festival, celebrating 50 years of rock. Presented by Independent Events, this is so much more than a rock concert! Fresh off a South American tour, the Iron Maidens, the only all-female Iron Maiden tribute will bring the house down with their powerful reproduction of Iron Maiden’s best tracks. Anthem will give Rush fans their fix and Astro Creep 2000 will have people dancing and headbanging at the same time with Rob Zombie and White Zombie hits. Breakdown, the ultimate Tom Petty tribute, will bring the MTV memories back, Second Helping will dish out some Lynyrd Skynyrd rock – southern style, smothered in gravy and ’56 will cover the hits from the 50’s. In addition to music, there will be

food, beer, jewelry, acupuncture, sports memorabilia and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Red Paww foundation, a local non-profit that is dedicated to helping pets have a good life. It’s going to be so huge, it won’t fit inside – all the excitement will be at south 4th Street and East Lincoln in downtown Phoenix. Gates open at 10am with music starting at 3pm. Be sure to get there early – it’s going to get crowded! Visit www.aztributefest.com for more information about the event, or www. redpaww.org for more information about the puppies.
