ARTS! sponsored by ShowUp.com Have you seen IT? Set in Buffalo, New York, this stage version of the 1997 British film is a grin and bare-it-all musical that winningly tells the story of a disheartened group of unemployed steelworkers low on cash and prospects and desperately in need of a new source of income. After seeing their wives’ enthusiasm and dollars spent on a touring company of male strippers, they decide to present a strip act of their own at a local club. One of them declares that their show will be better than the Chippendales’, because they’ll go “the full monty” and strip all the way. Meet the Men who show IT…

Jerry Lukowski is a blue collar steelworker still trying to acclimate to life’s struggles, always promising his teenage son and ex-wife the world

and never quite making anything happen. He’s divorced, unemployed, behind on child support and full of great ideas, but is apparently all talk and no action. Will he keep his promise this time? Dave Bukatinsky hasn’t given his beautiful, spunky wife any loving in a long time. He has a great sense of humor, but his lack of self-esteem – and extra poundage – are weighing him down. Can he really bare it all? Harold Nichols was the loathed boss before the steel plant closed. Now he’s a middle-aged nerd living way beyond his means, and his life is unraveling. His gorgeous arm-charm wife has no idea he lost his job and continues to spend their “credit” as if it’s as plentiful as water. Will he risk losing her and go all the way? Noah “Horse” T. Simmons can dance

like a pro, but he has the weight of the world in his pants living with the “big black man” stigma. Can he show us his stuff? Malcolm MacGregor is anal-retentive, childlike and still lives with his overbearing sick mom. He loses all hope with the loss of his job, but he’s about to learn a lot about himself. Will he reveal what’s under the surface? Ethan Girard has no real talent, he can’t dance or sing, but his crazy antics earn him a place on the team. Plus they need a sexy, well-endowed white boy who can’t wait to bare his buns. Will he discover the truth of bearing it all? As they prepare to “show it all,” each man must work through his fears, self-consciousness and anxieties in order to come through with what they have guaranteed. Join us in cheering

the guys on as they overcome their inner demons and find strength in their friendship and go “all the way” to conquer their fears and take charge of their lives. I was pleasantly surprised to be invited to the Grand Opening of The Full Monty at the Peoria based Arizona Broadway Theatre, now in its 6th Season. The venue, while tucked away in an unassuming corner, houses some fantastic surprises for those who haven’t experienced it and showcases some of the best musical theatre and what is certainly the nicest plated dinner, dessert, wine list and service of any, ‘dinner and a show’ I’ve experienced in the Valley. The Full Monty, adapted for the stage with music and lyrics by David Yazbeck, based on the Motion Picture released from Fox Searchlight Pictures and the Book by Terrence McNally, comes to the Valley courtesy of Director and Executive Producer Kiel Klaphake and Artistic Producer, Cassandra Klaphake. Recommended for adults, for brief nudity and mature subject matter, The Full Monty is the hilariously apro-pro story of a group of friends and acquaintances in upstate New York, united by the closing of a steel plant and facing a number of life’s challenges including; losing child custody, marriage and money troubles, adjusting to middle and old age, job pride and even coming out of the closet. After a visiting, notorious, male burlesque captures the money and attention of their wives and turns the other women in the town to Jello, the men decide to do a show themselves but take it one powerful step further by announcing that they will be going all the way, which is to say, full nude or, “The

Full Monty” for a payday that will take the weight of the world off their shoulders. The laughs ensue as this united tribe learns to sing, dance and shake their collective booties to an upbeat soundtrack while they struggle to balance their personal lives with the idea of stripping for an audience of people that they’ve known their whole lives. Monty is a laugh out loud night of fun for either a, “Best Date Ever,” or a, “Girls Night Out” and holds both friendship and laughter as the answers to problems that seem to match the modern status quo . Noteworthy performances are Seth Grugle’s ABT debut as the leading Jerry Lukowski, a well acted Nathan Lukowski (Jerry’s son) by youth theatre veteran and sophomore at Cactus High School, Joe Cunningham, The chubby but loveable Dave Bukatinsky played by AZ resident turned New Yorker, Geoff Beliston, Chris Anthony Giles as a dancing, moving, machine in the character of Noah “Horse” T. Simmons, ASU student and theatre major, Eddie Maldonado as a running up and into the walls, Ethan Girard, and veteran performer Kathi Osborne, also making her ABT debut, as the hilarious and outspoken piano madam, Jeanette Burmeister. A solid cast, costumes, by Shanna Lee Barker, lighting design, courtesy of Tim Monson and rock solid choreography by dance globetrotter, Kurtis W. Overby help to make the show that much more enjoyable. If you are looking for a night of laughs and fun, don’t be afraid to go all the way…Don’t be afraid to go, “The Full Monty!”

May 18 - June 18, 2011 “Seussical” is a fantastical, magical, Broadway musical extravaganza! Tony winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (“Ragtime,” “Once On This Island”) have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie, and a little boy with a big imagination--Jojo. “Oh, the Thinks You Can Think” captures the show’s spirit of imagination, as the colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos. The story centers around Horton the Elephant, who finds himself faced with a double challenge--not only must he protect his tiny friend Jojo (and all the invisible Whos) from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left

Silver Screen Scoop! By Joseph J. Airdo Jeremy Renner, Wanda Sykes and Jennifer Lopez have joined the voice cast of 20th Century Fox’s “Ice Age: Continental Drift,” in which a cataclysm sets an entire continent adrift. Using an iceberg as a makeshift ship, Ray Romano’s Manny the wooly mammoth, Dennis Leary’s Diego the Sabre-tooth tiger and John Leguizamo’s Sid the sloth launch themselves on an epic seafaring quest. The animated adventure is expected to hit theaters July 13, 2012. Be among the first to get the latest ‘scoop’ from Joseph J. Airdo at Examiner.com Andy Armstrong talks shooting ‘Thor’ Interview by Stan Robinson Bringing the legend of ‘Thor’, based on the Marvel comic book superhero to the big screen, is a challenge for the special effects and the stunts department to turn fantasy into reality. An important aspect is stunts. Stunt Coordinator Andy Armstrong, whose credits include this year’s ‘The Green Hornet’ and the upcoming ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’

(2012), used his special touch with the principal actors doing ‘practical’ stunts for the action sequences.

Read more from Stan Robinson’s interview with Andy Armstrong exclusively online at ScreenScene.org and Examiner.com.

Andy: “Thor is a very out-of-worldly picture, with the action very well grounded in reality, especially the physical action with Thor himself, we wanted to keep very real, avoiding as much CGI (character generated images) as possible which would lend itself to the look of the film.”

Photo caption: (L-R) Chris Hemsworth (as Thor), Stellan Skarsgård (as Selvig), director Kenneth Branagh on the set of THOR Photo credit: Zade Rosenthal / Marvel Studios.

We see two worlds, Thor’s world and our own human world, seems a tall challenge to blend those two worlds into believability. Andy: “Yes it is, a character who goes between both these worlds, and as you say, believable in both of them. One is a very alien world to us, and the other is our world, which we all know very well. We were lucky with a fantastic actor in Chris Hemsworth; he has a lot of physical action to do in the movie. Without any level of exaggeration, if he didn’t want to work as actor, he could make a very good living as a stuntman. He’s a very, very tough guy, and a very, very skilled, committed guy, who got himself fit and got himself big. Very few of his stunts are done by a stunt man, almost everything is done by Chris himself!”

The following quotes were pulled from reviews written by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s Film Section contributors to present readers with a wider perspective about this weekend’s new releases. Read Joseph J. Airdo, Randy Montgomery and Stan Robinson’s full reviews exclusively online at Examiner.com, AZWeeklyMagazine.com and ScreenScene.org, respectively. ‘Jumping the Broom’ Two very different families converge on Martha’s Vineyard one weekend for a wedding. Starring Paula Patton, Laz Alonso, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, Meagan Good, Tasha Smith, DeRay Davis, Mike Epps and Julie Bowen. (PG13 – 108 minutes) Joseph: “As if a completely contemptible main female character was not bad enough, ‘Jumping the Broom’ is the kind of overly simplified romantic comedy packed with stereotypes of all shapes and sizes that this critic was taught by college film professors to treat as a menace to society and encourage others to avoid like the plague.” Grade: F Stan: “Although the personality types of both the ‘Upstairs’ and ‘Downstairs’ families are a bit stereotypical, the basic messages of honesty in relationships, tolerance of differences, and commitment are apparent, while comedic moments from the cast of familiar actors do soften the over the top extremes of the ‘caricature portraits.” Grade: C

‘There Be Dragons’ Arising out of the horror of the Spanish Civil War, a candidate for canonization (Charlie Cox) is investigated by a journalist (Dougray Scott) who discovers his own estranged father (Wes Bentley) had a deep, dark and devastating connection to the saint’s life. (PG-13 – 120 minutes) Joseph: “When it comes to the would-be epic ‘There Be Dragons,’ writer/director Roland Joffe’s cinematic execution simply does not live up to his grand ambition. Granted, the filmmaker gets credit for the spectacular look of this project but overly emphatic dialogue and what is ultimately revealed to be a shallow story throws water on his fire.” Grade: D Stan: “With a darker and more foreboding presentation than secrets/investigative themed films like ‘Angels & Demons’ starring Tom Hanks, ‘There Be Dragons’ presents the painstaking process of discovery, the impact of secrets revealed, and the effects, provides ‘food for thought’ by writer/director Roland Joffe and is worth a look if this genre is your forte.” Grade: C ‘Thor’ The powerful but arrogant warrior Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is cast out of the fantastic realm of Asgard and sent to live amongst humans on Earth, where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders. Also starring Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins. (PG-13 – 115 minutes) Joseph: “The tremendously thrilling ‘Thor’ is quite cool and features copious comically clever ties to the rest of the Marvel universe, but it falls infinitely short of its superhero siblings. A deep dependency on science-fiction minimizes the down-to-earth human-interest component thereby sacrificing the universal appeal achieved by, say, ‘Iron Man.’” Grade: C

Stan: “This latest entry of Marvel Comics superheroes to the big screen aptly presents the world of the Gods of legends while intertwining Thor’s arrival on Earth, is visually captivating with 3D and special effects not getting in the way of the story. Chris Hemsworth as Thor gives us a superhero who learns and experiences the aspects of humankind as he prepares to fulfill his destiny as the protector of Earth.” Grade: B

Maybe I too can be like Dean L. Kamen and declare an independent state with its own currency (his is in units of pi) and have my own unique logic apply. CARLOS MENCIA

Carlos Mencia, superstar/stand-up comedian, is undoubtedly one of today’s most lauded entertainers and feared comics. Whether it is man-on-the-street interviews, studio comedy, commercial parodies, or nationwide sold-out tours, Mencia demonstrates an extraordinary ability to connect with a diverse audience. Mencia was named “International Comedy Grand Champion” from Buscando Estrellas (the Latino version of Star Search). This led to appearances on “In Living Color,” “The Arsenio Hall Show,” “Moesha” and “An Evening at the Improv.” Mencia continued his journey up the comedy ladder by headlining “The Three Amigos” tour with Freddy Soto and Pablo which sold out in record time around the US. A fter the success of his solo dvd, “Carlos Mencia: Not For The Easily Offended,” “Mind of Mencia” went into development. The show was an instant hit. PFC Changs China Bistro by Chef Rachel Albert

Shanghai native and restaurant consultant Phillip Chiang knows restaurants. In the early 1960’s his mother opened a high end restaurant and one of the first in the U.S. to serve Chinese food from regions other than Canton. Chiang later graduated from with a B.F.A. from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, ran her restaurant, The Mandarin, for several years, then opened a smaller, less expensive off-shoot called the Mandarette in West Hollywood where they served “grazing food”. In 1993 Paul Fleming, who successfully launched Ruth Chris Steak House in Beverly Hill, CA, teamed up with Chiang to create and open the first P.F. Chang China Bistro in Scottsdale. Today, the chain has 200 locations around the world, including 9 locations in Arizona, eight of them around the valley (in Tempe, Scottsdale, Chandler, Peoria, Goodyear, Happy Valley, and Superstition Springs/Mesa) and one in Tucson. Expect friendly wait staff, excellent service, good, freshly prepared food, and an extensive menu to satisfy a wide range of tastes, preferences, and special diets. You’ll find vegetarian

and non-vegetarian dishes, a kid’s menu, both brown and white rice, a special 100% gluten-free menu suitable for people with Celiac disease that includes special broth, soy sauce, marinades, and house made sauces, along with stringent kitchen standards set up to avoid cross contamination. They offer happy hour specials, lunch specials, wine, mixed drinks, and desserts.

THE BEER PROFESSIONAL & PRIVATE BEER DINNERS A good friend, who writes under the name The Beer Professional, recently took on the task of writing about private beer dinners. Those that aren’t advertised, but are conducted for a small group of friends and family, and not to promote anything but a good time. We appreciate TBP’s expertise as well as his creativity. Without him it is not likely this article would be written, since I have lost all pretense of creativity and professionalism. I will paraphrase him in some places here, and outright steal (without attribution) from him in other places. You will know these places because he uses big words in the right places

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” and everything. Once I looked up these words his article made a lot of sense, so I decided to use it to fan my creative fires. So the first thing TBP recommends is that you work on your list of who to invite. He suggests somewhere around 10-12 people including at least one couple who drink wine exclusively, just for the enjoyment of watching them find something they like from the barbaric beer side of the adult beverage world. Keep a camera on them as they are likely to provide a potential You Tube moment. Next up is the menu. Stick with basics. TBP prefers passed Hors D’oeuvres, but since I can’t spell it without looking it up, I stay away from those. Besides, I have enough trouble finding 10 friends to invite

let alone somebody to circulate with a tray of mini quiches. Instead make a couple of nice platters to set out along with a beer selection for each one. For example, blue cheese stuffed dates wrapped in bacon with a New Belgium Ranger IPA sitting next to it would be good. As would stuffed mushroom caps with SanTan Epicenter. Give them a couple of choices to try to get started, but avoid overwhelming the palate too early. After that it’s simple, once seated, offer another appetizer, followed by a first course, an entrée and dessert. Each paired with the right beer. The trick is to keep the food and beer complementary without being repetitive. You want to challenge the taste buds, not confound them. Work your way up in intensity and finish

with something that rounds out the meal and provides a final exclamation point to a wonderful evening. There are countless resources out there to help you put together food and beer pairings and properly plan a dinner. One of my favorites is the Brewers Association web site www.craftbeer. com. Some great, easy to use pairing guidelines there that allow you flexibility to work within your culinary abilities. Now, it’s time to serve the meal. Be your own Beer Professional and introduce each beer before it comes to the table. This will come naturally and will be a source of conversation during each course. Prod your inexperienced indulgers with adjectives and encourage them to create their own. Your gift to the Continued on Page 32...

...Continued from Page 30. patrons of your Beer Dinner should be twofold: first, you exposed and educated them to beers they were previously unaware of. Second: you increased their beer vocabulary. Adjectives are crucial and need to be

learned; much the same way some of us speak a second language. We know that, in the industry, we have to teach our noses and taste buds, what they are experiencing every day. Some of that sure does sound fancy, and it makes sense too. I always like

the idea of letting the tasters tell me what they taste rather than telling them what they should taste. When you add the food pairing in there, there is an infinite world of discover available to your guests. And, I never fail to pick up a new flavor descriptor that I hadn’t thought of before. One of my favorite things to do afterwards is to have one final, or maybe two final beers to enjoy on their own merits. Usually I pull something out of my cellar, and aged barley wine, or sour or a smoked porter. Something to sit around and enjoy before saying goodbye to the guest. So, anyway, here is the deal. If you invite the right people, put together a simple menu that allows both the food and beer to shine and allow your guests to discover the wonder of your pairings, you have a recipe for a can’t miss dinner. And if you don’t have enough friends, call me…I always like a free meal. Oh and thanks to The Beer Professional for the use of his article, I probably should mention it to him some day.

Best canned beers will be honored at a special ceremony on Sunday, May 15, 2011; More than 30 brewers from around the USA will participate in the inaugural event on Saturday, May 21, 2011 The Ameri”CAN” Canned Craft Beer Festival, presented by Whole Foods Market, will host its awards ceremony on Sunday, May 15, from the Courtyard Marriott Chandler Fashion Center. The awards ceremony will precede the inaugural Ameri”CAN” Canned Craft Beer Festival scheduled for Saturday, May 21, 2011, from 2 pm through 6 pm in Historic Downtown Chandler, AJ Chandler Park West (3 S San Marcos Place). Both events conclude American Craft Beer Week. The judging session will take place from 9 am - 4 pm on May 15, but is closed to the public. An Awards Dinner is scheduled from 5 pm-8 pm from the Courtyard Marriott Chandler Fashion Center, located at 1100 South Price Road in Chandler. Anthony Canecchia, the owner and head brew master of SanTan Brewing Company, will emcee the awards ceremony, which will be streamed live online at www.cannedcraftbeerfest.com. Select canned beers will receive Gold, Silver and Bronze medals awarded in nine categories: IPA; American Pale Ale; English Pale Ale; Wheat Beers; Stouts and Porters; Ambers and Browns; Golds, Blondes, Pilsners and Light Lagers; Fruit; and Specialty Beer. All beer will be judged according to the 2011 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) Guidelines. All judges are professional brewers, BJCP certified or Cicerones certified. The ACCBF awards medals for excellence in nine categories and does not necessarily award medals to the top three finishers in a particular category. When judges decide a category contains three excellent examples of the style, they award gold, silver and bronze medals for the first, second and third place beers, respectively.

* Gold - A world-class beer that accurately exemplifies the specified style, displaying the proper balance of taste, aroma and appearance.

BEER! SECTION

* Silver - An excellent beer that may vary slightly from style parameters while maintaining close adherence to the style and displaying excellent taste, aroma and appearance. * Bronze - A fine example of the style that may vary slightly from style parameters and/or have minor deviations in taste, aroma or appearance. If judges believe that no beer in the category meets the quality and styleaccuracy criteria, they may elect not to award a medal. Judges may award a beer with a silver or bronze medal and yet not award a gold medal. An unprecedented lineup of national and local breweries will participate in the competition including 21st Amendment Brewing (CA), Anderson Valley Brewing Company (CA), Bavik (Belgium), Baxter (ME), Big Sky Brewing Company (MT), Blue Moon Brewing Company (CO), Bohemian (UT), Breckenridge Brewing (CO), Buckbean (NV), Caldera (OR), Crispin Cider (MN), Four Peaks (AZ), Grand Canyon Brewing (AZ), Leinenkugel’s (WI), Lumberyard Brewing (AZ), Mammoth (CA), Maui Brewing (HI), Mudshark Brewing (AZ), New Belgium Brewing Company (CO), Oskar Blues Brewery (CO), Prescott Brewing Co.(AZ), SanTan Brewing Company (AZ), SKA Brewing Company (CO), Sun King Brewing (IN), Tailgate Brewing (CA), Tallgrass Brewing (KS) and Wittekerke (Belgium). GAME! SECTION 38

ALL SPORTS - ALL THE TIME. UFC! 16 Taps! 22 Screens! Great Food! A View From a Fan By Stan Robinson The Sunday May 1 game, the fourth against the Chicago Cubs, ended with the D’Backs splitting the series against the Cubs with a 4 – 3 win with 26,600 in attendance. A quick glance around Chase Field did show the greater majority of fans wearing the Sedona Red of the Diamondbacks against the blue of the Cubs. The D’Backs take on the Colorado Rockies for 3 games May 3-5 before going on the road and returning May 16 for the San Diego Padres. Celebrate ‘Cinco de Mayo’ (May 5) at Chase Field for the last game against the Rockies before going on the road.

Although my loyalties were a bit ‘in the middle’ as I entered, it was a nice day with the roof and side panels open, and I did find myself letting out a big ‘YES’ when the D’Backs scored first to set the tone for the win. I’m a born and raised Chicagoan, on the South Side and grew up a White Sox fan. North side residents are inherently Cubs fans. It seems that living in Arizona for the past 10 years, the assimilation is complete; I’ve crossed over to the D’Backs side and enjoyed the win! Here’s a tip from ‘A View From a Fan’, take a guided tour of Chase Field and you’re sure to learn and see something new, even if you have attended games for a few years now!

May 5th, 2011 - May 11th, 2011 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Tours are conducted year-round, for both individuals and groups and are available on the off days when the D’Backs aren’t playing and the price is very affordable. For adults $7.00, child Ages 7-12 $5.00, child Ages 4-6 $3.00, and seniors it’s only $5.00. Remember to bring your Walkman to catch the D’Backs while watching the games and be sure it’s tuned to 620 KTAR-AM for the masterful team of Greg Schulte, Tom Candiotti, and Jeff Munn. With the Smartphone apps available, there’s nothing like the game being called in one ear and the roar of the crowd with the Chase Field sound system ‘promptings’ in the other!

If you want to get a rush, try your luck on the mechanical bull or cool off in the dunk tank. Don’t forget to enter the raffle for a chance at a golf package, new guitar, car audio equipment and much more. The extravaganza continues till 2am so pace yourself, we don’t want any dunk tank drownings in 3 ft water. 480.753.4577

Spotted Donkey Cantina May 5th-7th

For something a bit less chaotic come to the Spotted Donkey Cantina in Scottsdale for a 3-day Cinco de Mayo starting from 11:30am and going till 10pm. This creative Mexican restaurant and cantina will be celebrating with live music, drink specials and a custom menu. Try the new “Donkey Kick” with Habanero infused tequila or one of their signature margaritas such as Prickly Pear or Blood Orange. Mariachi bands will perform throughout the 3 days of festivities. As for the spotted donkey himself well, he will be there too so get your cameras ready for drunk donkey pictures...appropriate ones that is. Ahem. 480.922.1400
