and sister June still can’t really sing. The play presents a Saturday Night Gospel Sing featuring the Sanders Family in their first night back on the gospel circuit in five years. The play uses a cast of seven with the audience being the congregation. Pastor Oglethorpe, a young and enthusiastic minister, has enlisted the Sanders Family in his efforts to bring his tiny congregation into the “modern world.” Opening night jitters combined with the disdain of a pair of spinsters, the church’s chief benefactors, keep the evening on the verge of chaos. Between songs, the family members “witness,” or tell personal stories that relate to their trials of faith. After this night, Mount Pleasant Baptist Church will never be the same. Cuba Gooding Jr. puts ‘Hit’ out on creative freedom Interview by Joseph J. Airdo During his stint as host at the 77th Annual Academy Awards ceremony, Chris Rock suggested that anyone who watched the critically panned comedy “Boat Trip” ought to send sympathy money to star Cuba Gooding Jr. The joke was a low-blow but, in hindsight, Gooding Jr. sees it as the greatest possible praise.

“As an actor, you want people to be affected by your performance,” Gooding Jr. says. “Be it good or bad, you want them to be affected. That movie affected people. As an artist, you have to say I’m here to do this job, not pass judgment on people who enjoy it or don’t enjoy it. If you’re doing your job everything else will figure itself out.” In “The Hit List,” which is now available on DVD, Cole Hauser plays Allan Campbell, a disgruntled man who is coerced by a mysterious stranger who calls himself Jonas Arbor (Gooding Jr.) into creating a hit list during a drunken night out. When the bodies begin to pile up and all fingers point to him, Allan must then race to try to save those he marked for extermination. “Here’s Jonas, who has to blend into his environment and be chameleon-like but at any moment he can succumb to violence in such a shocking way and then relax back into his environment,” Gooding Jr. explains. “I thought that was interesting. That was the juice for me to hang on to this character.” Read more from Joseph J. Airdo’s interview with Cuba Gooding Jr. as well as a review

‘Forks Over Knives’ ~ revealing candid views Interview by Stan Robinson In the documentary researchers Colin Campbell, Ph.D. and Caldwell Esselstyn Jr. M.D., presents the research supporting the theme that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us like cancer and diabetes can be controlled, or even reversed, by changing diets from animalbased to plant-based menus. Two participants in the film who presented insight on, as well as involvement with, the ‘Whole Foods Plant Based Diet’, a central theme in the film, are Rip Esselstyn, an Austin, TX firefighter and son of researcher Caldwell Esselstyn Jr. M.D., and Dr. Suneil Jain of Rejuvena Health & Aesthetics located in Scottsdale, AZ. On why everyone should at least see ‘Forks Over Knives’… Rip: “I’m going to quote Dr. Oz who is now one of the leading three most influential people on TV who tells his viewership ‘You need to see this movie’ and he also says ‘You never have to die of heart disease and cancer.’ Now who doesn’t want to know more about that!” Dr. Jain confirms the revealing aspects of ‘Forks Over Knives’… Dr. Jain: “It’s a film that’s going to change your life, and change it in a short period of time! I do so much of this in my own practice, I tell those persons, ‘Give me six weeks, and if you don’t feel better, continue doing what you have been’, and 9 out of 10 times they’re hooked because they feel remarkably better than before! It’s very hard to tell the Western world not to consume meat because of the harmful effects which is based on years of substantiated research.”

‘Everything Must Go’ When an alcoholic (Will Ferrell) relapses, causing him to lose his wife and his job, he holds a yard sale on his front lawn in an attempt to start over. A new neighbor (Rebecca Hall) might be the key to his return to form. (R – 97 minutes) Joseph: “Writer/director Dan Rush unearths a decidedly different Will Ferrell in ‘Everything Must Go.’ The filmmaker’s feature-length debut shows that the typically annoying actor is capable of restraining himself. The problem in that is that he suddenly becomes boring. And the movie itself is equally such, with – as Chuck Berry would say – no particular place to go.” Grade: D Stan: “Moderately receptive to the films of Will Farrell, the story is evenly paced with the basic presentation by writer/director Dan Rush. I found myself engaged enough to want to know the outcome for the central character, which says ‘Everything Must Go’ accomplished the primary intent of filmmaking of telling stories.” Grade: C

‘Forks Over Knives’ Researchers (Colin Campbell, Ph.D. and Caldwell Esselstyn Jr., M.D.) explore the possibility that people changing their diets from animal-based to plant-based can help eliminate or control diseases like cancer and diabetes. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (PG – 96 minutes) Joseph: “‘Forks Over Knives’ is an extremely eye-opening experience that will indubitably encourage hesitation in the vast majority of carnivores the next time they cut into a juicy steak. However, while it excels at educating its audience, it fails to entertain them thereby

limiting its potentially persuasive reach. Moreover, it gives new meaning to beating a... what’s the plant-based equivalent of a dead horse?” Grade: C

Stan: “A real gem of filmmaking’ by director Kelly Reichardt, ‘Meek’s Cutoff’ presents the physical as well as the mental challenges of ‘trust and ulterior motives’ as we follow a wagon train of westward bound settlers traveling through the Oregon desert along the famous Oregon Trail in 1845, bringing into focus the totality of early pioneers’ fortitude.” Grade: B

Stan: “With revelations of certainly startling data which spans decades, softened and fervent testimonials of persons who have overcome serious illnesses, and the simplicity of changing one’s diet as a preventive cure is, dare I say it, ‘Forks Over Knives’ is indeed, food for thought.” Grade: C

‘Incendies’

‘Bridesmaids’

A mother’s (Lubna Azabal) last request sends twins Jeanne (Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin) and Simon (Maxin Gaudette) on a journey to the Middle East in search of their tangled roots. In French with English subtitles. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 130 minutes)

Picked as her best friend’s (Maya Rudolph) maid of honor, lovelorn and broke Annie (Kristen Wiig) looks to bluff her way through the expensive and bizarre rituals with an oddball group of bridesmaids (Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper). (R – 125 minutes)

Joseph: “Filmmaker Denis Villeneuve’s dramatic mystery flick ‘Incendies’ is a gravely haunting experience whose heart-wrenching sting is guaranteed to stay with you long after you have left the theater. Granted, the movie is a tad too long but said length serves its enormously epic quality, making most Greek tragedies pale in comparison.” Grade: B

‘Nine Nation Animation Festival’ The festival presents a selection of recent award-winning animated short films from countries worldwide and the world’s most renowned festivals, including Cannes, Berlin, and Annecy (82 Minutes). Playing exclusively at the Film Bar in downtown Phoenix, AZ.

Stan: “Enormously captivating as the request of a ‘last will and testament’ serves to painfully reveal hidden lifelong secrets, ‘Incendies’ presents the proverbial question, is it really in the best interest of those who follow to learn the details of our relatives lives before us? The answer is the quandary that stays with us as viewers, long after the central characters are wrestling with their ancestral discoveries, as the onscreen story fades to black…” Grade: B

‘Priest’

‘Meek’s Cutoff’

The documentary features interviews and visits with wealthy collectors, museum curators and guides, librarians, authors, gallery directors, art restorers and experts in erotic art, who discuss the reasons for the cultural suppression and control of erotic art throughout the world including the Vatican, the British Museum. (77 Minutes). Playing

Though she and her companions are lost and increasingly desperate, a pioneer wife (Michelle Williams) protects a Cayuse Indian from their shady guide (Bruce Greenwood), who wants to kill him. (PG – 101 minutes)

South Mountain’s 1st Traditional Italian Restaurant

A warrior priest (Paul Bettany) from a dystopian wasteland sets aside his sacred vows and embarks on a quest to save his niece from a nest of murderous vampires. Also starring Karl Urban, Cam Gigandet and Maggie Q. (PG-13 – 98 minutes)

‘Secret Museums’

exclusively at the Film Bar in downtown Phoenix, AZ.

BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW

The leg muscles of a locust are about 1000 times more powerful than an equal weight of human muscle. FRANCESCA WOLFSOHN INVESTMENT ADVISOR AZ 480~822~8176 NY 516~395~3299 Economists Locate End of Recession,

The headline read. It turns out the worst economic crash since the Great Depression actually ended some fifteen months before, although you could be forgiven for missing it, as you likely were out selling your blood. So I guess we are all okay. When this recession began, as an Investment Advisor who prefers to stick with Insured Municipal Bonds I was very angry at what’s become of our financial structure, and hopeful that this catastrophic unbalance was what we needed to set us on a wiser path both financially and socially. It felt like something structural had broken. That the “proverbial” rug was pulled out from under us. That it was permanent and would require serious attention by serious people. I was certain that we were experiencing something historic and profound. The world as we knew it would be changed forever… (optimistically hoping for the better.)

At the time, so many of my friends, clients and associates were out of work, my house had lost a third of its value, and I was trying to help people I knew figure out what to do about medical insurance.

Two years later, we are told the recession is over and it’s a new world. Many of my friends are still out of work, my house is still worth two-thirds what it was and I’m still trying to help people figure out what to do about medical insurance. Don’t get me wrong: I’m happy those economists finally found the end of the recession.

Remember in history class, how periods of American trial were followed by seismic sociological change? The Depression led to government regulation and the beginnings of a social safety net; World War II led to the baby boom, the beginning of racial integration and a burgeoning middle class. So what did we get for our collective trouble over the last few years?

KIWIS are the only birds, which hunt by sense of smell. By age sixty, most people will have lost half of their taste buds.

The most dangerous job in the United States is that of a fisherman, followed by logging and then an airline pilot.

An average human produce 1.43 pints sweat in a day.

OWL is the only bird, which can rotate its head to 270 degrees.

That’s easy. We went to the recession and all we got was this lousy T-shirt.

The same week that economists found the end of the recession, another news story was in print. During the last year, 3.8 million Americans (or roughly ... Oregon) slipped below poverty. Now, 42 million people, or one in seven Americans, lives in poverty (for a family of four this means living on $22,000 a year. This represents the largest percentage increase in that number since 1959 This could end up being the first recession in history in which the gap between rich and poor actually gets bigger.

The Silver Lining? So many of us did see the error of our ways (and others) and there are many more people out there living better, greener, more socially responsible lives. For what we cannot control steer as clear as you can.

Pollstar, a well-respected trade magazine for touring artists reports that Rodney Carrington was the fourth highest grossing comedian on tour in 2009, and in the top 100 of all touring artists worldwide; a list that includes such acts as U2, AC/DC, Bruce Springsteen, Pink, and Britney Spears. Rodney performed 120 shows in 83 markets in 2009. Other projects and releases for 2009 included the video debut of “If I’m the Only One”, a sketch comedy video starring Rodney, Toby Keith, and Jennifer Aspen which first aired on CMT during their Rodney Carrington weekend in May. The video is from the single of the same name on El Nino Loco, an all song album released in June on Capitol records. Rodney also released his first serious music album, Make it Christmas in 2009. The single, “Camouflage and Christmas Lights”, a poignant song dedicated to the troops, received rave reviews and multi-genre airplay nationwide. Other releases included seasons one and two of RODNEY, Rodney’s self-titled sitcom that ran for two seasons on ABC TV. The feature film, Beer for my Horses, which Rodney co-wrote and co-starred in with Toby Keith in 2008 still airs on a regular basis on CMT. Rodney’s one hour Comedy Central special, Live at the Majestic has aired monthly on Comedy Central since its highly rated debut in 2007. Rodney plans to continue touring throughout 2011 and is at work on another one hour television special.

Is that a sparkle in his eye or is he just confused? With his innocence and friendly demeanor, Mitch quickly engages the audience and then catches them off guard with his mixture of mischievous dialog and off color comments. While laughing at observations only Mitch can get away with, we are left wondering if he truly understands what he just said. We never really know. Mitch has been showcasing his talent to rave reviews for the past 15 years. Since then both appreciative audiences and comedy executives have made the same observation about Mitch’s rise to stardom, “It’s just a matter of time.” Well his time has come. The number one requested comedian on Satellite Radio, Mitch has appeared numerous times on both the “Late Show with David Letterman” and the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno”. In 2006 he took home honors as “Best Comedian” at the prestigious HBO Aspen Comedy Festival and in April of 2007 his half hour stand up special debuted on Comedy Central and was ranked #6 in the 2008 Standup Showdown. Mitch’s’ new Comedy Central One Hour Special “Mitch Fatel Is Magical” debuted in September 2009. Catch this innovative comedian, clearly about to make the jump to bona fide Superstar, while you still can.

On April 29th, the Phoenix Zoo presented its “Lost 80’s Live” themed event complete with a great lineup of live music from famous 80’s bands, 30 beverage and beer samplings from local breweries and wineries, great food, prizes and more. Thousands of party animals definitely displaced the zoo’s regular inhabitants and funds were raised to help the zoo (a non-profit entity), operate. The result: The event was a great success!

ing this event a real crowd pleaser. Unlike many events this time of year which happen in the heat of the day, Rock The Zoo starts at 7pm which makes the weather perfect and enjoyable.

On stage, the zoo rocked with performances by The Promise, Tommy TuTone, Animotion, Dramarama and the Motels. Tom’s BBQ and Panchero’s Mexican Grill provided great eats and great beer was everywhere, tasting style with participation from Lagunitas, Full Sail, Crescent Crown, World Class Beverages, Firestone, Sun Up,Sierra Nevada, Leinenkugel, Odell, Deschutes and more. A full assortment of wines and beverages were also available mak-

The Title sponsor for the event was Salt River Project and other sponsors included US Airways, AZCentral.com, KPHO Channel 5, Mix 96.9, Orangutan Home Services, Mastros, Berto’s Gelato and JoEllen and Phil Doornbos. Next year’s event promises to be even better - so if you missed this one, make sure you Rock The Zoo next time!

BEER! The Andechs Abbey: Holy Mountain for Beer Drinkers On a recent trip to Germany I had the pleasure of discovering the Andechs Abbey which would be somewhat irrelevant to this column except that on the premises of the Abbey is one of the best breweries you may never have heard of. It helps that they sit in a beautiful location, but it helps even more that they have superb beer. Known simply as the “Holy Mountain” it certainly is for beer drinkers.

hundreds of shades of blue and white. Thousands of beer pilgrims enjoy the treasures of KlosterAndechs: its famous brews. The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly and familiar. There’s a mix of Bavarians wearing the traditional Lederhosen and travelers from many countries in jeans. Amid all that are laughter, the occasional clink of glass beer steins and neighbors toasting each other. There’s a choice of liter or half-liter steins. — light or dark, Weizen, Helles or the famous dark Doppelbock. KlosterAndechs is one of the few places where Bockbeer is served year round, not just at Christmastime or during Lent, as is the case at most other German breweries. The powerful Doppelbock has a round and malty taste and a potent 7 percent alcohol by volume. No wonder a sign in bold letters above the beer counter warns customers: Remember, you still have to drive home today! The cloister dates to the 12th century, Continued on page 31...

GAME! SECTION

ALL SPORTS - ALL THE TIME. UFC! 16 Taps! 22 Screens! Great Food! A View From a Fan By Stan Robinson With the Diamondbacks on the road for 3 games against the San Diego Padres, 3 against the San Francisco Giants, and 3 against the Los Angeles Dodges, with a return to Chase Field on Monday May 16 to again face the Padres on their ‘home turf’, I felt a void coming in my usual ‘live baseball’ experience. As I left the game on Sunday May 1 against the Chicago Cubs, the Chase Field tour sign, which is prominently displayed near the ticket purchase windows, caught my eye. That’s it, were my thoughts, I’ll take the tour I mentioned in my last ‘View From a Fan’! The tour, with our guide Roger, was truly enlightening as he guided us through the ‘inner sanctum’ of Chase Field. His knowledge of those finer points that we all take for granted is indeed impressive! Here are highlights he covered in the hour our group experienced as he led us through the home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The famous retractable roof only takes 4 and a half minutes to open and close with an 8,000 ton cooling system to keep us fans cool on those hot Arizona days; there’s more than 700 monitors strategically placed throughout the stadium so we won’t miss a single minute of the action no matter where you are; the suites which cost an average of around $2,000 a game which includes 18 tickets for attendees with concierge service & restrooms is a great way to have that private event and enjoy a game in the process. There are the indoor pitching facilities; spacious locker rooms for the teams playing, trainer facilities, and the coaches’ areas with a full compliment of audio/ video assistance to compile those allimportant winning strategies.

www.16thstreetsportsbar.com 6522 N. 16th Street Phoenix, 85016 (602) 285-5555

The famous Chase Field swimming pool suite features 35 tickets for the price of $3,500 per game with an excellent view of the game while enjoying the cool feel of water on a hot day! My favorite on the tour are the dugouts. One is right there, next to the players and coaches, with the best view in the stadium. The Dugout suites with a spectacular view of the action are $3,500, which includes 14 tickets and full service. The view of the field from the dugout, as I stood in the very spot where players and coaches spend 9 innings giving their best to win, was quite a connection to the history of baseball. My recommendation, by all means, takes a tour of Chase Field and experience the magic of baseball, up close and personal. Tours are conducted year-round, for both individuals and groups. The best times are the off days when the D’Backs aren’t playing which gives a lot more unrestricted access, and the price is very affordable. For adults $7.00, child Ages 7-12 $5.00, child Ages 4-6 $3.00, and seniors its only $5.00. For the latest on the Arizona Diamondbacks with game analysis’, articles and a whole lot more, visit ‘Arizona Diamondbacks Examiner’ Mark Brown at Examiner.com. Thinking of adding a movie to your entertainment weekend, visit ScreenScene.org for what’s hot and, what’s not. Stan Robinson, a movie reviewer for the Film Section of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine, enjoys plays, live jazz, and live sports as a balance to the multitude of movies screened for review. Until next time from ‘A View From a Fan’, GO D’BACKS!

STILL RATTLIN’ OFF WINS

SaberCats Fall to Fired Up Arizona Rattlers Squad If you’re not excited yet, well you should be. The Arizona Rattlers are back on track and on quite an impressive roll. And as of late, it seems a solid defense, is indeed, the best offense. The Rattlers team defense, which was dominant for the first four weeks of the year, reverted back to its early season form and delivered five sacks and four interceptions as Arizona defeated the SaberCats 65-43 last Saturday night in San Jose’s HP Pavilion. Arizona improves to 7-1 on the season, and now enjoys the National Conference’s best record, as well as a two game lead in the West Division. Leading the Rattlers defensive charge was DE Tyre Glasper with three sacks, and LB Kevin Mccullough with two touchdowns. Back-to-back interceptions of SaberCats QB Mark Grieb to close the first half and to open the second, allowed Arizona to pull away and take an 11-point lead early in the third quarter. The teams exchanged scores throughout the second half until San Jose returned a blocked K Fabrizio Scaccia point after attempt for a two-point conversion, pulling

San Jose within eight points of the Rattlers at 51-43 midway through the fourth quarter. After a DB Marquis Floyd interception, Arizona attempted to seal the game with a field goal. Scaccia’s missed his kick to the right, but McCullough recovered the loose ball and scampered untouched into the end zone putting the Rattlers up 58-43. Moments later McCullough added a second touchdown to his night when he intercepted Grieb and cruised down the right sideline to finish off the SaberCats. The five Rattlers sacks more than doubled the total (4) allowed by San Jose all season prior to Saturday’s game. DL Kyle Harrington and DL Anttaj Hawthorne each recorded a sack in addition to the three by Glasper. Arizona was sharp offensively throughout the game. WR Trandon Harvey, WR Jason Geathers and WR Rod Windsor all hauled in two touchdowns apiece. QB Nick Davila had a productive night with six touchdown throws. After two consecutive games on the road, Arizona returns home on Saturday, May 14 to battle the Chicago Rush at the US Airways Center at 7 p.m.

The Night Owl BY MARIA TOURTCHANINOVA

Hello Dear friends! I want to thank you for all the fun events, parties and cocktail hours that I have been able to venture to alongside you, our always thirsty-for-a-good-time readers. I shall be making my way to the coast and passing the torch onto the lovely Ms. Evelyn Romans. Cheers to a summer we all hope to never forget.

Avant-Garden: Saucy Little Number at the Desert Botanical Gardens Thurs May 12th

Sip on some tasty alcoholic beverages as you walk through the garden as local band music starts off your night right. The bar will be serving $5 glasses of house wine all evening. When you’re done, grab a shredded beef brisket sandwich with coleslaw and chips for twelve dollars and watch people attempt to swing dance. Maybe even try it yourself because from 7-8 an interactive swing dance lesson will be in session. If you’d rather not step on people’s toes in confusion, then visit some of the booths set up with local businesses selling their treats, sweets and jewelry but come on, be a good sport! From 8-9, Mario Moreno and the Ramblers will be playing blues, rockabilly, and swing to add even more flavor to your Thursday evening. $10-$15 www.dbg.org

Music in the Garden: Cosmos Fri May 13th

It’s spring in the desert which means it’s the perfect time of year to appreciate Arizona’s unique flora. But before you get too mellowed out, watch the Cosmos perform live. World beats fused with mediterranean music urge you to hit the dance floor or even later as you walk out with a complimentary album. Internationally known Phoenix favorite DJ Rani G, will be behind the decks with tunes for the senses. Fabulous Food Fine Catering will be there with a chef-attended station to give your dinner a gourmet twist. Rather have a snack? Check out the Patio Cafe for tidbits and wine. Watch the 2004 winner of Bellydancer of the Universe, Ava Fleming perform and get yourself on the ballroom dance floor after. 5:30pm-9pm. Tickets $15-$21 www. dbg.org

AZ Salsa Festival Sat May 14th Ah the Southwest, desert, gorgeous skies and hot hot everything from the woman to the temperature to the Salsa. Experience all three at the 5th Annual AZ Salsa Festival. Now put your chips away as we are talking about the type of Salsa that gets your body moving until you forget every bit of useless

worry. The night promises to be steamy with live performances from the gorgeous Carolina la O straight from Columbia. This sassy broad will be sure to turn up the heat and get you moving. The festival will also feature Orquesta Son De Tikizia direct from Costa Rica! Local and National professional dance groups will spice up the dance floor and inspire you to get your hips swinging. Come early and snag a dance instructor to pick up some moves before the party hits full swing. Hot beats, sexy rhythms and dancing into the wee hours promises for an unforgettable sultry night. Tickets $25 in advance $30 at the door. 7:15pm-2am at the Venue of Scottsdale. www.azsalsa.net

Bass Friction Sat May 14th

I think we’ve all met “DJ Wacky-Wack” at one point in our lives. I’m sure you remember him-he’s the DJ that poisons your partying mood and kills the dance rhythm you were just starting to feel sexy about. Bad DJs are selfish, Bass Friction is not. Bass Friction will provide you with an eight-hour sampling of international house and electro music that will keep you feeling like a rock star on the dance floor. Headliners at this event include Electrixx, a respected DJ from Germany whose mix, Tetris, became a part of DJ Tiesto’s Kaleidoscope tour. If you like Dubstep, DJ Cyberoptix from Huntington Beach will be playing beats that will shake your bones. Other headliners include Scotland’s DJ Nom De Strip and Cali DJs Flash, B33son, and Mike Balance. Get your dance on this Saturday, 6:30pm-2:00am. $15 at the door before 10:00, after that it’s $20. Call this number the day before for the location: (602) 577-3709 or (623) 692-1963. Ages 16+

Got a hot event? Grand opening? Cool new promotion? Undiscovered gem? Please write to Maria at Nightowl@azweeklymagazine.com to possibly be featured here each week. Please include pictures when possible.
