A Closer Look at Larissa Brewington Larissa Brewington has been in theater for most of her life. A native of Pennsylvania, her first performance was a staged reading of Mark Twain pieces, and continued on in many musicals with the Muncipal Opera Company of Allentown. Larissa started Grey Matters Productions in 1995 after several years of touring with Touchstone Theatre of Bethlahem, PA. She wrote and performed many characters which included an 8 year old speaking of racial intolerance and a one woman show about Harriet Tubman. Grey Matters prides itself on presenting quality entertainment for the stage, moving forward with the premise that entertainment shouldn’t only be enjoyable, but also memorable. Lunch Time Theater has been fortunate to have Larissa performing such wonderful works as Quality Time, An Evening with Harriet Tubman and Into the Blue - A biography of aviatrix Bessie Coleman. This season she will be “Trailblazing with Sadie Alexander”, the first African - American woman to be admitted to the Pennsylvania state bar.

almost super-human, mystical quality about them. It seems that adversity drove them, and setbacks made them stronger. They were driven and triggered by circumstances that seemed to carry them into the worlds they seemed destined to conquer. Though all of those women worked hard to become who they became, Alice, for me, seems to be the most ‘accidental of tourist’. She was motivated by something bigger than herself and I’m not sure she ever discovered what it was or why! In her biography, she mentions several times that she didn’t quite know where her drive to become first a teacher, then a newspaper woman came from! She seemed to be artistically inclined (music, writing) but her family was never emotionally supportive as a matter of fact, they seemed to discourage advancement. She was a very sheltered child and teen. When she struck out on her own, there was no optimistic send off. She seemed to simply float on her own will power. She was the epitome of “Life is what you make it”!

Larissa is happy to be part of Lunch Time Theater and believes strongly Why did you choose Alice? that theater arts can be a tool used to educate as well as entertain people of While I was researching TRAILBLAZallGwynn ages. “Judy Rollings is my muse Garden ING SADIE (last year’s Lunch Time Popovac at Desert Botanical and my mentor! “This land is your land, this land is my land, this land was made for you and me.” -Woody Guthrie

CHICAGO The Musical at Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre, Mesa Murder. Greed. Corruption. Adultery. The more things change, the more they remain the same, even in 2011...? But this is CHICAGO! The Musical, 1920’s style, with “celebrity criminals’ and nightclub dancers - why this could be Scottsdale today! But pray the girls don’t decide “you had it coming…” or else you’re toast. The Prather family has brought one of the biggest musical hits of the decade to The Broadway Palm for a beauty and bullets parade that will have you running for cover, or a good attorney. This production is pure satire with the dynamic duo of Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, played with zest and emotion by Maggie Politi and Amy Marie McCleary. These two keep the music moving all night with the hits “All That Jazz”, “Funny Honey”, “Roxie”, “I Can’t Do It Alone”, “Me and My Baby”, “Nowadays” and the “Hot Honey Rag”! This is one hot show with more crimes and vengenence than an attorney on steroids! Did I say attorney - as in Billy Flynn (played like a pro by Jason Fleck), who we know only cares about the money. Jason is the balancing act in this one two punch musical leading us in circles with his “Razzle Dazzle” smooth talking ways while getting everybody off cheap. Accept for Amos Hart, played by the charming and naive Victor Legarretta. Victor’s interpretation of “Mister Cellophane” was a crowd pleaser. Throw in the Matron Mama, played with class and style by Marisha Wallace, great Musical Direction by JR McAlexander, Choreography by Millie Garvey, and you have one smoking good time in Mesa! Hey, even Da’ Bears and the Cubs would approve. Through Feb. 12th. Tickets 480-325-6700 or BroadwayPalmWest.com WOODY GUTHRIE’S AMERICAN SONG at Herberger Theater

Center If history repeats itself, which it certainly is doing again lately, then the Arizona Theatre Company’s production of Woody Guthrie’s American Song should be studied very closely by everyone. Director Randal Myler has a touch for bringing the real right into our hearts and minds - to see if we still have a heartbeat for stories and people that have substance and meaning. He succeeds like a giant dust storm about to rip through old town Phoenix. Woody’s songs and stories are right out of todays headlines – unemployment, foreclosures, debt, racism, massacres, and that other hot topic, Mexican illegals. But this isn’t a tea party; this is “machine kills fascists” as one of Woody’s favorite guitar stickers proclaims. There’s a spirit to this production that is touching and wise, full of realism yet hope, that may be the glue that is missing in this topsy turvy time. Oh the music - simply priceless! Led by a band of travelling musicians (Woody knows you well) including Mark Baczynski, David P. Jackson and David Miles Keenan, this show was sincere to the core with songs and feelings that stretched from New York to California. Then the Company of singers took up the harmonies and stories of another generation (not so far removed) led by Jason Edwards, Sally Mayes, Kenita R. Miller, Ryan Nearhoff and Jim Newman. Oh these singers were the real deal, not some cooked up reality show garbage, but our American history as a backdrop for tears, fears and wars that are right close again. By shows end, I think there were many elders and ancestors to thank for the perseverance and stamina that got us this far. And of course, Woody and his singing companions -“Bound For Glory”. Kudos to all the “Company” who made theatre arts relevant again with this stunning production of American Song. My advice, run fast and get a ticket to this production - it’s the best history lesson you’ll never forget. Through January 16th, Tickets 602-256-6995 or ArizonaTheatre.org BREAK A LEG!

The Broadway Palm Dinner Theater Presents

A story of murder, greed, corruption, adultery and all that Jazz… (Everything we hold near and dear to our hearts…)

If you can’t be famous…be infamous

becomes the toast of Chicago -- until other crimes pull the limelight away from her.

Prohibition Era Chicago, bathtub gin and 1920’s Jazz come roaring back with a vengeance when the legendary, bawdy Broadway musical CHICAGO takes the stage by storm at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre. This spectacular “razzle dazzle” production opened on Dec. 30 and plays through February 12, 2011. Ticket prices for all performances range from $39 - $49 for dinner and show; $28 for show only.

The Broadway Palm’s gutsy and dazzling production of CHICAGO pulls out all the stops and stars internationally acclaimed actor/singer Jason Fleck as Billy Flynn. Jason’s professional career was launched 20 years ago when Broadway Palm’s Artistic Director Seth Reines cast him in a production of Phantom in the Windy City of Chicago! Jason has appeared in Broadway tours around the globe including the acclaimed London West End production of Show Boat – directed by Hal Prince and choreographed by Susan Strohman. Jason has also appeared in Show Boat as Ravenal in the Broadway Palm’s production in 2004.

CHICAGO – THE MUSICAL, is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice and the concept of the “celebrity criminal”. The musical is based on a 1926 play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins about actual criminals and crimes she reported on.

8

The story revolves around Roxie Hart, a nightclub dancer who dreams of starring in vaudeville. She kills her lover, nightclub regular Fred Casely, and convinces her husband to front the money to hire Chicago’s shrewdest defense lawyer. The lawyer, Billy Flynn, turns her crime of passion into celebrity headlines, and Roxie January 6th, 2010 - January 12th, 2011

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Co-starring with Jason in this sinfully delicious Broadway extravaganza are the vivacious and gifted Amy Marie McCleary (Velma Kelly), the brassy and unforgettable Maggie Politi (Roxy Hart), Courtney Love in the mind blowing gender bending role of Mary Sunshine and direct from New York City the unstoppable Marisha Wallace as Matron “Momma” Morton. Oh, and please don’t forget...Victor Legaretta, who will break your heart as

the vunerable and transparent “Mr. Cellophane”. CHICAGO – THE MUSICAL is the third production in Broadway Palm Dinner Theater’s 10th Anniversary “Best Of Broadway Series” and is brought to life through the inspired direction of M. Seth Reines. This amazing theatrical feast boasts one show stopping number after another and features a “live” on stage hot jazz orchestra under the brilliant baton of conductor JR McAlexander. The dancing is thrilling with Millie Garvey’s innovative and arresting choreography. (Ms. Garvey also choreographed the Broadway Palm’s smash hit production of Joseph the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat). The eye-popping and seductive dancing chorus executes

Ms. Garvey’s choreography with passion and precision like you have never seen! Each member of the chorus – male and female alike are breath taking to behold and will make your heart skip a beat. You will spend most of the evening trying to decide who your favorite dancer is. The sets, costumes and lighting are pure eye candy. CHICAGO was created by composers John Kander, Fred Ebb (known for their hit musicals Cabaret and Kiss of the Spider Woman) and Bob Fosse (famous for his innovative staging and choreography). Kander and Ebb’s musical score modeled each number on a traditional format for a vaudeville act or vaudeville performer. This format made explicit the show’s comparison between “justice”, “show-business”, and contemporary society. The music has become a staple of our cultural fabric with numbers such as All That Jazz; Cell Block Tango; When You’re Good To Momma; Me and My Baby; Mr. Cellophane; Razzle Dazzle and Hot Honey Rag.

Bet You Didn’t Know! by Stan Robinson

Among those films released last year that have gotten their own 2011 calendar are “Alice in Wonderland,” “Despicable Me,” “Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” “Iron Man 2,” “Jonah Hex,” “The Last Airbender,” “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole,” “Shrek Forever After,” “Toy Story 3” and “Tron: Legacy.” However, it is not too late for movies of years past to grace your wall each month this year. “Alvin and the Chipmunks,” “Avatar,” “The Big Lebowski,” “The Blues Brothers,” “The Boondock Saints,” “The Hangover,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “Star Wars” and “Transformers” are all represented in calendar form, as well.

The now Ex-Governor of California, in “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” (1991), Arnold Schwarzenegger received a salary of $15 million; the 700 words he spoke translates to $21,429 per word. “Hasta la vista, baby” thus cost $85,716!

his life of excess when he gets an unexpected visit from his daughter Cleo (Elle Fanning), relies heavily on the relationship exhibited on screen by its two lead actors. “It was really important that they had a believable rapport and a bond so we did a lot of rehearsals and improvisations before filming,” says Coppola, noting she would also encourage the two actors to spend time with one another in character. “I had Stephen pick Elle up from school and take her to do things. They did a lot of stuff together so I think that by the time we started filming they already had a rapport and he was thinking about how he had to drive more safely when she was in the car and other things he wouldn’t (ordinarily) know.” “Somewhere” is Coppola’s fourth feature-length film as a writer/ director. Her filmography also includes “The Virgin Suicides,” “Lost in Translation” and “Marie Antoinette.” Although Coppola is eager to begin work on yet another project, she is even more excited to

see “Somewhere” finally grace the silver screen. “The idea of the characters came to mind when I was living in France and thinking about L.A. from a distance,” Coppola explains. “I wanted to do something set there around this kind of movie star guy that you see pictures of in tabloid magazines and stuff. And I also just had my first daughter so I wanted to put in the story a connection with him being a parent.” At the end of the day, Coppola says she just tries to do her work to the absolute best of her ability. And she has received extremely positive feedback on “Somewhere” from not only critics but also members of the general movie going public, many of who claim to have really connected with the film’s human emotions – especially those dealing with the theme of a parent reconnecting with a child. “That’s very gratifying for me,” says Coppola, noting that “Somewhere” is not for everyone but will definitely

Reviewers’ Roundup: ‘Somewhere’ Roguish actor Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff) is forced to reexamine his life of excess when he gets an unexpected visit from his daughter Cleo (Elle Fanning). Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 98 minutes) The following quotes were pulled from reviews written by AZ Weekly’s Film! contributors to present readers with a wider perspective about this new release. Read Stan Robinson’s and Joseph J. Airdo’s full reviews exclusively online. Joseph J. Airdo (Examiner.com): “Coppola takes her time to delicately craft each and every scene in ‘Somewhere,’ thus allowing the audience to fully absorb her many metaphors as well as the stellar performances by both Dorff and Fanning. This attentive filmmaking method may agitate impatient moviegoers but true fans of cinema as an art form will appreciate Coppola’s slowly unfolding emotional journey as seen through a very unique pair of eyes.” Grade: B Stan Robinson (ScreenScene.org): “Sophia Coppola, receiving my award for ‘Breakthrough Performance Behind the Camera’ for 2010, presents a poignant look at balancing one’s career goals with the added responsibility of family. Having worked in film production for twenty two years before retiring in 2008, the journey of the lead character in ‘Somewhere’ mirrors my personal journey of balance for personal and family life, and I’m sure each of us must face whether it’s in the industry or out. The slow

deliberate unfolding of the nuances of each character, and the allegory style of production technique, makes for a very powerful emotional film.” Grade: B+ Randy Montgomery (AZ Weekly): “Having spent many a weekend on Sunset Blvd. and admiring the Chateau Marmont, I was excited to see Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere. If staying at the Chateau is as boring and pointless as Somewhere, I’m glad I opted for the less expensive Best Western down the street. I understand what Coppola is trying to accomplish with this minimalist take on a movie star seeking solace and bonding time with his daughter, but the viewer doesn’t appreciate it as much. Stephen Dorff turns in an impressive performance, it’s just too bad he didn’t have much more to work with.” Grade: C-

Now Playing! ‘Mesrine’ Parts 1 and 2 Review by Randy Montgomery The story about France’s Public Enemy #1 Jacques Mesrine is told in two installments, The Killer Inside Me and Public Enemy Number 1. Trained as a vigilant militia man in the French/ Algerian war, Mesrine became one of the most violent, feared criminals in France and abroad. Mesrine was at one time arrested in Arizona and extruded back to Canada. The two films span numerous decades form 1957 to the 1970 ‘s. Grades B+/Arespectively. Each film will be played at Harkins Valley Art. Visit www. harkinstheatres.com for dates and show times.

appeal to moviegoers who need a break from the action-packed extravaganzas more frequently seen on the silver screen. “I hope it’s refreshing for audiences who are usually bombarded by so much going on to see something in a slower pace. It lets the audience breathe.”

‘Season of the Witch’

Review by Randy Montgomery ‘Cuz I’m country strong.’ Yeah, that tune will be stuck in your head for weeks after watching the movie. I have become a fan of country music the past few years and loved every song created for this film. There has been a lot of buzz over this one, which tells the story of an aging country singer (Gwyneth Paltrow) fresh out of rehab. Her manger and husband (Tim McGraw) has found two new stars (Leighton Meester and Garrett Hedlund). Their new found celebrity threatens Paltrow and forces her back into the dangerous behavior that sent her away. Hedlund and Meester are terrific and embrace their country roles. The music is fantastic. Pallor’s performance is hard to judge. Either it is over the top, or extremely well acted. Pulling off a role of a semi crazy star dealing with rehab isn’t easy. Other viewers at a Christmas Eve screening at Hollywood’s Arclight Cinemas didn’t seem as impressed with the story, music or performances as I. I’d easily give ‘Country Strong’ a “B+” Based on their feedback; I would judge audience reaction at a

By Stan Robinson ‘Not all souls can be saved’ is the tagline of this story starring Nicholas Cage of 14th-century knights transporting a suspected witch to a monastery. The church, believing that sorcery and her powers could be the source of the Black Plague and the cause of the plague’s firm hold in the land, the monks will perform a ritual in hopes of ending it.

The term lager comes from the German word, “lagern,” which means to store away (cellar). Lagers are brewed using bottom fermenting yeasts at cool temperatures near 50-55F. The lager yeasts produce less by-products than ale yeasts and normally result in a more simple and crisp flavor. The lower temperatures require longer fermentation periods and these beers are then stored away for weeks (at about 35F) before maturing. Most lagers can be sub classified into one of the many lager categories. However, hard to place or classify lagers can be found in the generic “lager” category. Biere de Garde - A Northern French artisanal farmhouse ale, the biere de garde style covers a range of sub varieties, including blond, amber, and brown. Examples across each sub variety all emphasize the malty (most commonly earthy, toasty, toffee, and caramel) character of the beer and

frequently have a musty cellared attribute (the name, biere de garde, can be literally translated as “beer of keeping,” and refers to the months long cold conditioning - lagering - of these beers after fermentation). The darker versions have more complex flavors and the hops are normally more subdued, while the lighter versions allow the hops to come through stronger (but still secondary to the rich maltiness). The mouthfeel of a biere de garde is typically moderate to heavy and the alcohol levels can be in the higher 8% ABV range. The biere de garde style can be brewed with lager or ale yeasts, but under cooler ale fermentation temperatures. Bock - A deep golden (Helles Bocks & Maibocks) to brown (Traditional Bocks) colored lager, which originated in the German town of Einbeck as early as the 14th century. After being resurrected in Munich three centuries later, this style errantly became known as “bock” (which also means “billy-goat” in German) instead of “beck.” The bock beer is malty rich and sweet (but not overly sweet) and typically contains bready, toasted, even caramel flavors that are in some cases lightly balanced but never overcome by hops. The alcohol level is higher than the average beer but does not dominate the aroma or flavor. The body of a bock is medium to just under full-bodied. The smooth character of a lager should come through in the bock.

especially for the darker versions. Doppelbocks are full-bodied beers and although stronger than the basic bock, they are never overcome by the higher alcohol or by the hops. Many doppelbocks today have an “-ator” suffix attached to their name. Eisbock - Eisbocks are concentrated doppelbocks, where the original doppelbock is frozen and a fraction of the ice/water is then removed to intensify the flavor and alcohol level in the beer. Their aroma, flavor, and mouthfeel are therefore comparable in kind to doppelbocks, yet significantly stronger and heavier and with deeper and darker colors. With alcohol concentrations as high as 30% ABV, eisbocks can be quite warming and represent one of the strongest styles of beer.

Doppelbock - The doppelbock (a “double” bock) originated in Munich, Germany as a next generation bock beer. They range in color from deep golden to dark ruby or brown. Like its predecessor (the bock), doppelbocks feature the rich malty aromas and flavors of bready, toasted, and caramel notes. But, doppelbocks are typically more complex and can include dark fruits (plum, prune, raisin, grapes) and sometimes chocolate aspects, January 6th, 2010 - January 12th, 2011

California Common / Steam - An entirely American creation, the California Common (or “Steam Beer,” which is trademarked by Anchor Brewing) originated in California in the 19th century when and where ice was not readily available. This style is therefore somewhat of a hybrid lager(-ale), which is brewed with strains of lager yeast that can effectively ferment under higher than normal (for lagers) temperatures (55-60F). At these temperatures, the lager yeasts can produce light fruity flavors that are often found in ales, while still retaining some crisp lager qualities of the beer. Additional characterstics of this style include noticeable hopping (woody and/or minty) and a basic toasted caramel malt base. The Common beers are normally clear amber to copper in color with a medium body. Continued on Page 25...

Helles / Dortmunder - These two

Kellerbier - Unfiltered and unpasteurized lager beers that originated in the Middle Ages in Germany, kellerbiers (“cellar beers”) are incompletely lagered beers that are therefore less carbonated and slightly sweeter than their fully lagered counterparts would be. Kellerbiers can theoretically be produced using any lager-based style, although Helles might be the most common. Their appearance is typically cloudy due to the vitamin rich yeast present in the beer and hopping levels can be fairly significant. These beers are traditionally matured in deep vaults open to the surrounding air (unbunged). Marzen / Oktoberfest - Marzens originated in Bavaria, Germany and Continued on Page 26...

Schwarzbier - A dark brown to black German lager, the schwarzbier (“black beer”) is surprisingly lighter bodied than its color would suggest. Schwarzbiers, while not weak in malt character, tend to emphasize a hoppy bitterness and often finish somewhat dry and with a medium mouthfeel. Roasted, overly bitter, and sweet flavors do not overrun these beers like in many stouts or porters, although they can display some chocolate, caramel, and light coffee aspects (short of anything “burnt”). Schwarzbiers can be a pretty sight to look at with their dark bodies and fairly persistent tan heads.

lager styles are very similar and are often grouped as only one style. The helles (“bright”) style originated in the Munich / Bavaria areas of Germany, while the Dortmunder from Dortmund in Northern Germany. Both are golden yellow pale lagers with somewhat showy white heads. They feature grainy, bready, biscuity, even cookie-like (but never caramel) malt backbones with a noticeable hops presence (Dortmunders tend to be slightly more hopped than Helles). Both styles fall short of the hop levels typical of Pilsners, but they are crisp and clean, somewhat balanced lagers with a sometimes dry finish. Both also make for good “session” beers due to their high drinkability.

Dunkel / Dark Lager - This group includes two distinguishable sub styles: American (and some macro European) dark lagers, as well as the Munich dunkel lager (dark lager). The former style is fairly straight forward and the less exciting of the two, encompassing copper to brown lagers with light bodies and balanced low hop and malt flavors (and often corn or rice adjuncts). The Munich dunkel lager version of these dark lagers is darker (deep copper or red-brown to dark brown) and has more prominent malt (no adjuncts, but bready, biscuit, chocolate, nutty, and sometimes light roastiness) and noble hop flavors. The hops and maltiness of a dunkel are normally well-balanced (not very sweet or too bitter) with a moderate body (ie. lighter than a bock or schwarzbier).

exactly the same, as a style being developed in Dortmund. Because these beers have such close connections they are frequently categorized together. were traditionally brewed in the Spring (March) to close out the cool weather brewing season before the coming hot summer months could spoil beer. During the summer, these beers were cellared in cold caves and later brought out with the cooler weather for Autumn festivals, including the renowned Oktoberfest in late September. Marzens are an adaptation of the Vienna style lager with higher malt depth (sometimes light sweetness), typically higher alcohol levels, and noticeable but low hop bitterness. They are golden-amber to deep copper in color and emphasize bready, biscuity, and lightly toasted malt flavors.

We will see you next week for our final installment of Beer Styles. After that, it’s back to the drawing board.

One of the things you may notice about lagers is that many of the categories have sub categories included. This is primarily due to the regional nature of many of these beers. For example a beer brewed in Munich may end up being very similar, but not

I don’t make it Downtown often, but when I do, this is one of my favorite places to go. Walking up the narrow stairs brings me back to the bars back in NY and that image only enhances itself when you step into the dim and modern, yet raw atmosphere. It is a small place but that’s what gives it its charm. Exposed brick walls, wooden floors, hightop tables and sofas line the walls with room to dance in the middle if you so choose to. And you should because there is no attitude here, just an environment of a big city bar in itself. Visuals aside, let’s talk about the bar because it is worth mentioning. The drinks here are phenomenal and it’s for a reason. All mixers and juices are house-made, that means no concentrated orange juice and no color enhanced sweet and sour. The result? A drink of pure taste and ingredient without the hangover. This place also has 45 different beers and 40+ wines as well as liquors you may have never heard of. In other words, if you would like to try something new, this is your spot to go. Come on Sunday nights for Industry Night and 20% off drinks. DJ spins until 2am and we finish off the week right. 602.254.1646

BudLight Fiesta Jan 6th-9th

The Scottsdale Waterfront will be home to 4 days of college football fandom. If you make it out before or on Friday the 7th, make sure to start off with the $2 Tailgate Party. Alongside drinks, the main attraction here is the chance to try delicious offerings from some of the valley’s top restaurants for only $2 samples. Some of the restaurants include Petite Maison, Metro, Culinary Dropout, Tapas Papa Frita and Mission. I recommend all these places and it is exciting to be able to bounce from cuisine to cuisine. Tailgate ends at 3pm from which you are able to continue with the Budlight Fiesta that goes till

9pm. The festival is family friendly as it includes football-themed games such as field-goal kick and corn-hole, team color manicures and pedicures, an ESPN demo field and 8 bars and snack stations along the way. Each day will feature varying live music from performers such as Tonic, Rebecca Carreia, Javier Colon, and Metalhead among others. Check out full details on their website and come out for an all day event. Free Admission. www. budlightfiesta.com

Arizona Bach Festival Jan 7-15th

The return of last year’s successful concert series is back for its winter run. The festival is dedicated to performing the cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach by professional musicians. The mission of the festival is to “Inspire, educate, preserve and elevate the appreciation of Bach as a transcendent force through the highest caliber of performances.” The kickoff is this Friday at 7pm with the free showing of Bach & Friends, a new documentary about Bach’s music as well as discussions on the composer by other classic artists. If you are not Bach savvy, this would be a perfect introduction into one of the world’s most famous composers. Sun Jan 9th see violinist Stephen Redfield in concert at 3pm, Be sure to check the website for a schedule of weeklong performances. www.ArizonaBachFestival.org 602-357-4224

single, ‘What the Hell’ is not representative of the rest of the material on her next record, ‘Goodbye Lullaby’.

Avril Lavigne is to release a “deeper, emotional” new album.

She said: “The song is more reminiscent of some of my old pop rock. The rest of the album is more stripped down, deeper. All the songs are very emotional. The other albums I’ve done, the songs are all over the place. This is the most consistent album all the way through.”

‘Goodbye Lullabye’ - which will be released on March 8 is Avril’s first album since 2007’s ‘The Best Damn Thing’ and she admits she is “anxious” to get back into the public eye. He said: “I’ve just been all over the place from project to project. Right now I’m working on a lil’ Neptunes music. And there’s another ‘Despicable Me’ film to score. We’ve also got some stuff going on with Madonna.” Pharrell loves working with other people and says he learns a lot from each of his collaborators. He added: “I learn in every process. Every session I have I try to take something from and learn different things, how to make great music, how

Purple Reign

In The Showroom at Talking Stick Resort Jan 6 - 8 From humble beginnings in small UNLV college clubs to late night T.V., Purple Reign has risen to international acclaim and recognition as the World’s #1 Prince Tribute. On November 17, 2008 the group became the 1st ever tribute/impersonator act to appear as the musical guest on Late Show with David Letterman. That show was chosen by CBS and Late Show to ring in the New Year and re-aired January 1st, 2009 at 12:15am (New Years Eve) less than 45 days later, making it the 1st musical performance of 2009 on Letterman. The year 2009 also saw Purple Reign crowned “Best Tribute Act” by the 28th annual Las Vegas Review Journal Poll, winning 2 awards by both the staff and readers. Purple Reign captures the imagination while seamlessly re-creating the blistering performances and raw energy of Prince in his prime and returns you to the era that made The Artist an international superstar. This show is a must see for Purple Rain movie fans and all live music fans alike!

Alicia Jacobs, former Miss USA and Las Vegas NBC entertaiment news reporter hails Purple Reign as “ ...the best tribute band in Las Vegas...” “UNBELIEVABLE! FABULOUS!” Paul Shaffer, CBS orchestra “It’s one of the best shows on the strip ...” Monica Jackson, Fox 5 News Las Vegas “...Oh! They were great!” David Letterman

GAME! SECTION

GAME! INAUGURAL EASTHAM ENERGY COLLEGE ALL-STAR GAME SET TO INVADE SUNDEVIL STADIUM The Inaugural Eastham Energy College All Star Game presented by Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino is set to kick off later this month at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe as local fans will have a chance to see some of the college players from the best conferences across the country face off against each other. Many of the athletes you will be watching will take the next step to the National Football League as the fruits of their labor will be on display for the entire valley. Players from Au-

42

burn, Oregon, Boise State, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Michigan State and ASU’s own Sai Falahola and Thomas Weber will be on the field for this first of its kind event in Arizona. “See Tomorrow’s NFL Stars Today” is the game’s slogan, as fans will be able to see all of these athletes at various dinner events such as Charleston’s at I-10 & Ray Rd and Lucille’s at Tempe Marketplace. Plans also include an autograph party at Majerle’s Sports Grill in Chandler for Thursday, January 20, where fans can rub shoulders with all the All Stars. “It will be cheaper than going to a movie for ASU students and in fact that $8.00 ticket may lead to a full tuition scholarship as our title sponsor Lynn Eastham wants to give a few full semester tuition scholarships to those ASU students who attend the game and love the game of football,” says john Gray, one of AZ Sports Group LLC founding members. The game is set to kickoff at 5:30 pm and will be televised on FS Arizona and several of its affiliates across the country - and will include a “Troop Salute” Half-time fireworks show. The game will benefit several local Arizona charities including the Native American Connections, Tempe Diablo’s and Jared Allen’s Homes For Wounded Warriors - all great causes that AZ Sports Group LLC kept in mind when deciding to bring the game to the greater Phoenix area. Tickets are available at the Sun Devil Stadium box office or any of the 122 UPS Stores in the valley.
