Where are you from? Born and raised in Los Angeles -- “Los Angeles Proper” or “Los Angeles Major,” as the natives might say -- headed from Hollywood towards the ocean during my formative years, in a Manifest Destiny sort of upbringing. What do you like best about being a DJ? Certainly the association is pleasant. Some days, it’s the money and free booze. But from a rocking chair in my old age, I might cherish the many adventures and the opportunity to have done something creative.

DJ Cheapshot

Graham Funke

How would you describe a perfect gig? Good scotch and a wild crowd can make all the difference. I always aim to please, so an ideal situation occurs when those persons involved relent to my tastes and good judgment. How would you describe your mustache? Feed a stray and he stays! Even if I shave, the moustache returns. Does your mustache make you a better DJ? It makes me a better-looking DJ. What’s your favorite activity when you’re not DJing? I am a voracious reader, I enjoy aged briars and fine cavendish, I study filmé, I attend tennis clinics, and I make crunk music.

DJ Cheapshot:

How did you come up with your DJ name? I was Lord of the Jew Crew in high school going by the world’s worst DJ name in DJ-Name-History - “Fanta-C”. One of my smaller, more uncoordinated minions decided to pick a fight with a much bigger, more-coordinated opponent. As I stood, frozen in disbelief, watching the squabble, my friend pushed the enemy towards me and without thinking I just cocked back and punched the bad guy in the side of the head, knocking him down. Like the man I am, I quickly tucked my tail between my legs and ran away. As I was fleeing the scene of the crime someone said “hey nice cheapshot” and rather than caring about anyone’s health or safety thought to myself “radical DJ name dude!” and the rest is (super-important) history. You’re the official tour DJ for New Kids On The Block, who’s your favorite member, Donnie??? How did you know? Are you the one spying on me at night when I play with my Donnie doll? Scandalous!! The last time you came to AiRIA nightclub, one of your fans baked you an oversized chocolate chip cookie, with all your fame & fortune how is your head not exploding??? I’ve gotten use to my celebrity ever since I was featured on my first television show when I was three years old called “World’s Ugliest Baby” on TLC.

DJ Fashen

How did you get into DJing? I started out dancing (freestyle/b-boy). I was in a group called 2-N-Position. We used to dance at a club called Club 777 in Scottsdale in like 1990. Ztrip was the dj. One night he let me get on and try AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Where are you from? I’m originally from the slums of Northridge, CA currently residing in the slums of Burbank, CA (fact: saying “slums” before any city makes you sound cooler)

to scratch. Of course I sucked but was hooked. From that day forward DJing has been my life. My friend J-Cut would always let me come to his house and practice on his stuff as well as Ztrip until I got my own set up. How long have you been DJing? About 20 years now. You’re known as one of the hardest working DJ’s, what keeps you so motivated? To me the music is motivation. There’s so much good music out there that people don’t hear. I love that I have an opportunity to play good music to people that they might not otherwise have heard. I also love the fact that people who have regular 9 to 5 jobs can come to a club or event that I play and are able to forget about their day to day for a while and have fun while I put in the work. Seeing people leave with a smile on their face is what keeps me going. Being one of many internationally famous DJ’s to come out of Arizona; do you think there is something in the water? Hahaha. There’s sooo much talent in Arizona. I really don’t know why, but it’s awesome! I’m sure many more will be making the international transition in the future as well! What makes your DJ style “sew icey”??? I just “do me”. I like what I like, and I don’t hide it. Yeah I’ll have to play a Brittney record, or a Drake record, or whatever the masses want to hear at a club, but I will definitely educate them with some music they don’t know in the same set, like it or not.

Silver Screen Scoop! By Joseph J. Airdo Two of this summer’s early hits, both sequels in and of themselves, are reportedly getting at least one more chapter apiece. First, Tim Burton, Sam Raimi, Shawn Levy, Chris Weitz and Alfonso Cuaron have been listed as potential back-up directors on a fifth installment of Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise in the event that “On Stranger Tides” director Rob Marshall opts out. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Has hired Craig Mazin to write the screenplay for “The Hangover Part III.” Be among the first to get the latest ‘scoop’ from Joseph J. Airdo at Examiner. com

years and was the perfect person to really trust my characters with! She’s a brilliant screenwriter and also very funny, and really had the same idea about childhood and who we wanted the film to be for, as I did. We had so much fun collaborating on the screenplay, at the beginning we were really laughing because I started out writing pages of dialogue that I would send to her, and as you know from working in the industry, she said to me ‘This is going to be kind of boring if they just stand there and talk!” explains Megan as she breaks into total laughter during the interview! Actor Vincent D’Onofrio talks ‘Kill the Irishman’

Interview by Stan Robinson

Interview by Joseph J. Airdo

In rare instances an author of a successful series of books has the opportunity to pen the screenplay for its big screen debut. Megan McDonald has written 16 books since 2000 with 10 featuring Judy Moody a 3rd grader and 6 of Judy’s younger Stink, with all of them for the young ones in grades 2-4. With long time friend and experienced screenplay writer Kathy Waugh, Megan had the very enviable challenge of bringing her book to the big screen.

Vincent D’Onofrio admits that while he enjoyed acting in Anchor Bay Entertainment’s low-budget indie crime drama “Kill the Irishman” and had a very comfortable if not relaxed on-set experience that was certainly not the case for everyone – especially his costar Ray Stevenson and writer/ director Jonathan Hensleigh.

Megan: “It was huge, it was a whole new education for me, it was writing in a completely different form, and of course learning to think much more visually. Kathy and I have been friends since college, so I brought her into the project. We had a life long dream of some day collaborating on something because she’s been in children’s television writing for many

“The guy who had it the toughest was Ray because he worked every day all day,” D’Onofrio explains. “I think he would give you a different story. I was only there in and out about a month playing the part so I just had to pass the time. I wasn’t worked very hard. But I could tell that it was rough on Jonathan and Ray. They worked very hard.” In “Kill the Irishman,” which will be available on DVD beginning June 14 at retail stores and rental outlets

throughout the Valley, Stevenson portrays Danny Greene, a tough Irish thug who, while working for mobsters in 1970s Cleveland, ignites a turf war that leads to the collapse of the Mafia in several major U.S. cities. D’Onofrio plays John Nardi, an Italian-American labor racketeer and ally of Greene. The actor admits that he had not heard of this true story until reading Hensleigh’s screenplay. Moreover, there exists very little information about Nardi – and only one photograph – so D’Onofrio more-or-less created the character from scratch. Read more from Joseph J. Airdo’s interview with “Kill the Irishman” actor Vincent D’Onofrio exclusively online at Examiner.com.

Reviewers’ Roundup! The following quotes were pulled from reviews written by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s Film Section contributors to present readers with a wider perspective about this weekend’s new releases. Read Joseph J. Airdo, Randy Montgomery and Stan Robinson’s full reviews exclusively online at Examiner.com, AZWeeklyMagazine.com and ScreenScene.org, respectively.

‘Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer’ A feisty third-grader (Jordana Beatty) must think of new ways to have fun after her original plans for an awesome summer go awry. Also starring Heather Graham. (PG – 91 minutes) Stan: “While most movies straddle the ‘proverbial fence’ to appeal to both the younger audiences and the adults attending with them, ‘Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer’ finds and delivers its theme, directly to the young 2nd through 4th graders. Younger audiences delight in Continued on Page 15...

‘Submarine’ A Welsh teen (Craig Roberts) has two objectives: Lose his virginity before his 16th birthday and prevent his mother (Sally Hawkins) from having an affair with a smarmy spiritual adviser. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 97 minutes) Joseph: “Writer/director Richard Ayoade’s first feature-length film ‘Submarine’ is worth seeing if only for star Craig Roberts’s brilliantly authentic deer-in-the-headlights expression. Though it is frequently too cute for comfort, seemingly desperate for praise in connection to its idiosyncrasy, and occasionally stumbles into strange sequences that resemble rock music videos of no consequence whatsoever, ‘Submarine’ succeeds in its search for poignancy in the coming-of-age experience.” Grade: C Stan: “The slow and deliberate pacing of ‘Submarine’ provides moments of ‘self-reflecting’ of our own lives and that all-important time when we each ‘came of age’. Writer/director Richard Ayoade presents the theme, cloaked in an ‘M-TV now’ style, that’s sure to connect with the younger generation without leaving the older behind.” Grade: C

‘Tree of Life’ Disillusioned in a modern world, a man (Sean Penn) tries to come to terms with the complicated relationship that he shared with his father (Brad Pitt). Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 138 minutes) Joseph: “Terrence Malick’s enigmatic drama ‘Tree of Life’ may have made quite the emotional 40-minute IMAX experiment in existentialism

had it been contained to a visual story about the birth of the universe. However, by tacking on an additional feature-length film that aimlessly traces the birth of experience in an individual’s life, the filmmaker drains his piece of art of any enjoyment whatsoever.” Grade: D Stan: “It’s been quite some time that a film provides such ‘food for thought’ on relationships and elements that subconsciously form who we are and how we fit into the ‘grand scheme’ of life around us. Combining two film styles, the first half straightforwardly presents the ‘back-story’. Filled with ‘time lapse’ montage sequences, writer/director Terrence Malick uses minimal dialogue for the second half of the film and the modern day revelations’ as the central character (Sean Penn), as well as we, strive to make sense of the choices of living life.” Grade: B

‘YellowBrickRoad’ A group of researchers launch an expedition into the wilderness in an attempt to solve the mysterious disappearance of the entire population of Friar, New Hampshire more than 70 years earlier. Screening Midnight Fridays and 10 p.m. Wednesdays throughout June at AMC Westgate 20. (R – 98 minutes) Joseph: “Some movies are all about the impression they leave on you; the feeling that remains stuck to your skin as you stumble out of the theater. The new independent horror flick ‘YellowBrickRoad’ is a highly unnerving experience and, in spite of its many flaws and especially failure to reach the full potential of its eerie setup, that initial disorientated walk back to your vehicle may be worth the price of admission in and of itself.” Grade: C Randy: “‘YellowBrickRoad’ starts promising and delivers the hope of a really spooky ‘lost in the woods’ film.

South Mountain’s 1st Traditional Italian Restaurant

It fizzles quickly when there is no clear ending in sight. I lost interest half way through. The constant music and ear piercing sound effects added to my annoyance.” Grade C-

Gabriel Iglesias is a comedian who is best known for his loud, funny voices and animated style of comedy. Because of his large frame, he is the self-proclaimed “Fluffy Man” as he says, “I’m not fat, I’m Fluffy”. The nickname is derived from his own joke about the so-called “Five Levels of Fatness;” in this joke, he notes that the five levels, from lightest to heaviest, are Big, Healthy, Husky, Fluffy, and “DAMN!” In 2008, he added a sixth level, dubbed “Oh Hell No!” Iglesias has made several guest appearances on The Tonight Show, The Late Late Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Showtime at the Apollo, and Que Locos, as well as three of his own specials on Comedy Central, one of which was voted the halfhour “Special of the Year for 2003.” In 2006, Iglesias was a finalist in the fourth season of “Last Comic Standing,” until he was disqualified for multiple violations of the contest agreement, including using a BlackBerry. Iglesias was named Comedian of the Year by Comedy Central in 2006.

BEER! WHEN IN MEXICO…

Originally, this article was going to be written as I was sitting on a beach in Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point) sipping on a cold beer and letting the incoming tide tickle my toes. And it was supposed to be published last week. Unfortunately things happen and upon my arrival I discovered that my resort was having problems with their internet and I would be unable to transmit my article once it was written. So I did the only thing possible, I bagged my article like it was a sophomore paper in some class I was only taking for my GPA. Of course, that also gave me the ability to use last week’s topic for this week. As I see it, a double header of sorts. Anyway,

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” it’s time to pay the piper, so here we go. When in Mexico you don’t have much in the way of beer choices although I did have the pleasure of enjoying some Cucapa, as well as a couple of American Craft Beer at Capone’s just off of Fremont on Sinaloa. If you go there, don’t be swayed by the tap handles, the beers pouring almost never match the handle. Always several good beers available and be sure to ask about any special bottles they might have. I have heard rumors of everything from New Glarus to Three Floyds occasionally being available, albeit unofficially. So much for Craft beer. The rest of the time you need to be content with the usual Mexican beers…and that’s not too bad.

You see, the thing about being in Mexico is that everything is not just a flavor, but an experience. So, perhaps you are exclusively a craft beer drinker in the U.S., but in Mexico you can embrace the Coronas, Tecates, Sols, Pacificos and the rest. That may just help you appreciate them a little more when you are back home since the experience is now part of it. I used to know a guy who had spent time cruising in the Caribbean and he always thought that the pale lagers of various countries that were ports of call were the best beers he ever had and wondered why they weren’t available here. He wasn’t much of a beer guy anyway, but he recalled these beers fondly and thought they would sell well if we could just get them to Arizona. The simple truth was that each of those beers

evoked a fond memory for him and while he might enjoy them because of the return of those memories, people that had never tried those beers in their natural setting would probably stay with more flavorful craft beers. But if you have enjoyed them in Mexico, why not continue to enjoy them here. In Rocky Point, Tecate seems to be the most prevalent although you will find Corona readily available along with Sol and Pacifico. Now before we get to in to it, realize that there are only two companies making most of the beer in Mexico, GrupoModelo and Cervecería CuauhtémocMoctezuma. Modelo makes Corona, Pacifico and of course the two Modelo beers, Especiale and Negra. They also make a few others including the incredibly tasty and somewhat difficult to find Victoria. Moctezuma makes Dos Equis (although these are not readily available in Rocky Point) along with Sol, Indio, Carta Blanca, Bohemia and the ubiquitous Tecate. Everybody has their preference and each beer has subtle (or not so subtle) differences. If you like fuller flavor and body, go with the Marzen and Vienna Lager styles, notably Indio, NegraModelo, Bohemia and Victoria. On a hot day hanging in the sun on the beach, stay a little lighter with some of the others. What to do while you are enjoying these beers? Glad you asked. Sitting by the pool or on the beach is always a great choice. We especially enjoy taking a

it. For non-beer related activities visit the Tequila Factory located on Benito Juarez just north of Fremont. They offer free samples and have some very good prices on the locally made Tequila. Avoid the roving bands of mariachis as much as possible…once or twice is fun, but remember, “mariachi” is a Spanish word meaning, “give me a couple of dollars and I will go away.”

Stay out of the bad parts of town and in the tourist areas, travel at day when possible, don’t flash a lot of money and don’t be stupid. These are great rules for any town, not just Rocky Point. The crime rate is fairly low, and they are protective of tourists since they are important to the local economy. Tip well at one of the restaurants and you will have a friend for life. Enjoy your visit to Rocky Point and enjoy the beer they have to offer.

In short, there are a ton of things to do in Rocky Point and just about all of them can be enjoyed with a beer before, during or after. As for safety, don’t worry about it. Rocky Point is incredibly safe as long as you use common sense.

NOW RENTING!

Last week I was having dinner with a group of friends and one of them decided she would spark a somewhat controversial conversation on power. She confidently declared that politicians had true power and that only through them, the world could be changed. What about the artists who instill ideas of beauty and existence and balance such themes with the portrayal of what is real although sometimes grotesque? Each piece we become moved by stays ingrained in our beings and builds a lens we look though, forever changing our perspective of the world. True power comes from how creatively we are able to translate our ideas into something that communicates a raw emotion shared by others. This translation is a voice not always heard. RAW: Natural Born Artists, is an organization that gives the opportunity for artists to give back to their communities and allows them the chance to display their ideas. RAW is a nationwide movement holding events monthly in various cities. This Thursday at the San Carlos Hotel in downtown Phoenix, local artists will passionately showcase their ideas for our community. Artists, Kayola Swan and Buffington Art will have exhibitions while musician, Mysticblu will satisfy our need for rhythm and song. Photos by May-Ling and Tharn Photography will also be displayed along with fashion by Elvira Lopez Del Prado, Trisha Bray, and Shelvey Skirt. Enjoy a beverage from the cash bar in your cocktail attire as you absorb art and collect ideas. Thursday, June 9th. 6:00 pm – 2:00 am. San Carlos Hotel, Phoenix. $10. http:// www.rawartists.org/phoenix

I love Latin food so much that I sometimes think, since I eat it so often, it means all that spice and zest has seeped deeply into the part of my brain that controls movement. Dance movement. Ow! Ow! Living in Arizona, I’ve attended multiple fiestas held by friends of Hispanic descent who’ve let me stomp and twirl around whenever the music starts playing. Mix me in with salsa, samba, and tango music after a few drinks and Concerts in the Park watch me own the dance floor with my sultry hip action. I’m laughing as I write this because I’m Instead of doing thirsty Thursday again this trying to convince myself that I’m speaking the week, try taking it easy and take pleasure in truth about this “sultry hip action” when really hearing some of your favorite jams in a lovely off outdoor environment. BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW

During World War II the U.S. Government used 260 million pounds of instant coffee. The longest recorded flight of a chicken is thirteen seconds. FRANCESCA WOLFSOHN INVESTMENT ADVISOR AZ 480~822~8176 NY 516~395~3299 NECESSITY IS THE MOTHER OF INVENTION (OR REINVENTION)

An electric eel can produce a shock of up to 650 volts.

ONE OF MY VERY FAVORITE YOGI BERRA QUOTATIONS IS “WHEN YOU COME TO A FORK IN THE ROAD, TAKE IT” We hear the word “reinventing” applied to systems all the time: reinventing capitalism, reinventing credit options, reinventing health care, politics, journalism, food, the factory town, the airport security line. And now it applies to many Americans, who are reinventing their lives, changing “YES WE CAN” from a political mantra to their own personal mantra. It’s clear that the public loves to see people start over. Just turn on the television. So much of the television we watch perpetuates the idea that you can always start your life anew. That is what reinvention is all about… getting in touch with our buried passions and finding a way to let them back into our lives. It goes to show you that, even if you’ve been in a specific job for 20 or 30 years, you can reinvent yourself and start doing something you love. Even better, you can become very successful at it as well. The time is right to reinvent yourself. We’re in a longevity revolution of a kind that’s never been seen before. A hundred years ago, the average life expectancy was 47; today it’s 77. That’s a big jump! We’ve seen a 30-year increase in 100 years.

People who do not dream in their sleep are likely to have personality disorders.

Wesley Snipes installed public telephones in New York City before becoming an actor.

Thirty-five percent of the people who use personal ads for dating are already married. When possums are “playing possum” they are actually not “playing” but rather passed out from sheer terror.

“ANY INTELLIGENT FOOL CAN MAKE THINGS BIGGER, MORE COMPLEX, AND MORE VIOLENT.
