Silver Screen Scoop! By Joseph J. Airdo Shane Acker, director of the 2009 animated sci-fi flick “9” has been hired to helm a live-action major motion picture based around HIT Entertainment’s “Thomas the Tank Engine” property. However, the movie will reportedly attempt to target older children as opposed to the preschool market with which the 65-year-old brand has been most commonly associated. Be among the first to get the latest ‘scoop’ from Joseph J. Airdo at Examiner. com

Director Shawn Ku talks shooting ‘Beautiful Boy’ Interview by Stan Robinson The film ‘Beautiful Boy’ presents the poignant story of a married couple (Michael Sheen and Maria Bello) on the verge of separation who are leveled by the news their 18-year-old son committed a mass shooting at his college, and then took his own life. Director Shawn Ku talks about the central theme… Shawn: “It’s an important story that we’re seeing from a completely new perspective. These shootings happen again, and again, and again. The exploration of something that in a sense touches us all more often than we’d like to admit, ultimately we’re boiling these people down to completely relatable people. I get word back from viewers all the time that they really relate to either the mother role or the father role, and it makes them analyze their own lives, and they feel so moved that they have to go home and have to hug their children. So I think on that level, it’s a cathartic emotional journey that is ultimately uplifting because there is

a celebration of the resilience of the human spirit!” With the smaller independent films, which I call the real ‘gems of filmmaking’ because cast and crew give their heart and soul to a project, there’s the challenge of a limited budget, casting, and the accelerated shooting schedule. With those limiting factors, director Shawn Ku presents an emotionally stirring look at a family in crisis. The following quotes were pulled from reviews written by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s Film Section contributors to present readers with a wider perspective about this weekend’s new releases. Read Joseph J. Airdo, Randy Montgomery and Stan Robinson’s full reviews exclusively online at Examiner. com, AZWeeklyMagazine.com and ScreenScene.org, respectively.

‘Beautiful Boy’ A married couple (Michael Sheen and Maria Bello) on the verge of separation are leveled by the news their 18-year-old son committed a mass shooting at his college, and then took his own life. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 100 minutes) Joseph: “‘Beautiful Boy’ is an exceptionally courageous motion picture. In fact, Anchor Bay’s new drama literally transcends the medium with its tenacity, possessing the potential to be tenderly therapeutic for a society in which snap-judgments born from anger are the unfortunate norm. One may desire a bit more emotional strength

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

from director Shawn Ku’s film, but there is no doubt that ‘Beautiful Boy’ provides plenty to ponder.” Grade: B Stan: “Michael Sheen and Maria Bello deliver powerful performances as the parents while director Shawn Ku avoids the normal clichés that would have presented the usual melodrama of a couple in crises. Instead we feel the angst of the couple as they question each other, as well as themselves, in search of the unknowable question, ‘Where did we go wrong with our son?” For us parents, ‘Beautiful Boy’ is a daunting eye-opener, as well as psychologically stimulating for those whose lives are yet to be lived. Grade: B

‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins’ The life of a businessman (Jim Carrey) begins to change after he inherits six penguins. As he transforms his apartment into a winter wonderland, his professional side starts to unravel. Also starring Carla Gugino. (PG – 95 minutes) Randy: Jim Carey is no stranger to animal flicks, but this is the first time he has starred opposite penguins. Carey plays Popper, a New York real estate exec that is separated from his wife and lacks the admiration of his children. His life changes when two shipments of penguins arrive from his late father, the world traveler. The zany antics of the penguins, the unrealistic expectations of Popper’s ex-wife and children and Popper’s near psychotic behavior at times was tiresome, but the kind-hearted message and family-friendly values of the film ended up redeeming itself in the end. Grade: B

‘The Scenesters’ When a serial killer starts picking off beautiful young hipsters on the east side of Los Angeles, a group of crime Continued on Page 17...

Joseph: “There is no doubt that Todd Berger’s dark comedy ‘The Scenesters’ is a smug little flick but even that may actually be just part of a much larger joke. After all, the murder mystery is about as satirical and self-aware as it can get, creatively mixing a wide variety of mediums, including a behind-thescenes featurette, a music video, a surveillance tape, a training guide and more. And it is all done in quite the quick-witted way.” Grade: C Randy: “The Scenesters is the type of indie that festival programmers love. Being a native Angeleno myself, this L.A-centric film may appeal to those obsessed with, or live in the Silverlake-Los Feliz-Atwater area of the city. The story centers around a group of crime scene photographers that hide clues from police in order to make their own thriller/ documentary. The characters are self-absorbed, as is the film’s director, who plays the “director” within the film. Unique plot aside, one can’t help find this a vanity project for a group of “up and coming” filmmakers playing themselves.” Grade: C

‘Skateland’ In the early 1980s, in small-town Texas, dramatic events force a 19-year-old skating rink manager (Shiloh Fernandez) to look at his life in a very new way. Also starring Ashley Greene. Playing exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. (R – 138 minutes) Joseph: “Despite its 1980s setting, Anthony Burns’s directorial debut ‘Skateland’ tells a stock story that is about as distinctive as Jell-o. Completely unaffected by the era, this coming-of-age tale could have

taken place anytime and anywhere. However, those who grew up during the period may find enough nostalgia in ‘Skateland’s’ sights and sounds to give the flick a pass, allowing it to skate by on its charm alone.” Grade: D

Now Playing! The following new releases were not screened in time for AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s press deadline. Read Joseph J. Airdo, Randy Montgomery and Stan Robinson’s full reviews exclusively online at Examiner. com, AZWeeklyMagazine.com and ScreenScene.org, respectively.

‘13 Assassins’ Cult director Takeshi Miike’s period action film set at the end of Japan’s feudal era; a group of unemployed samurai set out to bring down a sadistic lord and prevent him from ascending to the throne and plunging the country into a war-torn future. In Japanese with English subtitles. Playing exclusively at Film Bar. (R – 126 minutes)

‘The Art of Getting By’ George (Freddie Highmore), a lonely and fatalistic teen who’s made it all the way to his senior year without ever having done a real day of work, is befriended by Sally (Emma Roberts), a popular but complicated girl who recognizes in him a kindred spirit. (PG-13 – 84 minutes)

‘Green Lantern’ A test pilot (Ryan Reynolds) is granted a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers, as well as membership into an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping peace within the universe. (PG-13)

Harkins to host ‘Harry Potter’ hullabaloo

The following quotes were pulled from interviews with cast and crewmembers of “YellowBrickRoad,” screening Midnight Fridays and 10 p.m. Wednesdays throughout June at AMC Westgate 20. Read the full feature exclusively online at Examiner.com. “There was a road that if we had gone down – and it was the police telling us not to go down this road – I think we would have found some kind of inbred family living together. They told us that there was a dead animal tree and they would not be held responsible if we wandered down that road.” – Writer/Director Jesse Holland “The main influence for me to act in this project was to be able to work with these people – not only my brother, who is one of my best friends – but everyone who was involved in this film, most of whom I went to college with. To be able to create something that lasts as long as a film with those people was really special.” – Actress Cassidy Freeman “If we had had our druthers, we would have used music from all of the old Disney movies. If you listen to ‘Dumbo’ and ‘Bambi,’ there is no scarier music in the world. I don’t know what drugs they were taking back then. So, maybe in the future if this blows up and is a huge cult hit, someone will want to gift us some old Disney songs and we can make it even scarier.”– Writer/Director Andy Mitton “There was this lady who was a journalist but also Border Patrol and the chief of police - everybody up there wears 12 hats. She goes, ‘If you find any dead bodies, let me know.’ And we laughed, but she goes, ‘No,

Gabriel Iglesias Presents StandUp Revolution June 15th – 19th Gabriel Iglesias is a comedian who is best known for his loud, funny voices and animated style of comedy. Because of his large frame, he is the self-proclaimed “Fluffy Man” as he says, “I’m not fat, I’m Fluffy”. The nickname is derived from his own joke about the so-called “Five Levels of Fatness;” in this joke, he notes that the five levels, from lightest to heaviest, are Big, Healthy, Husky, Fluffy, and “DAMN!” In 2008, he added a sixth level, dubbed “Oh Hell No!” Iglesias has made several guest appearances on The Tonight Show, The Late

Late Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Showtime at the Apollo, and Que Locos, as well as three of his own specials on Comedy Central, one of which was voted the half-hour “Special of the Year for 2003.” In 2006, Iglesias was a finalist in the fourth season of “Last Comic Standing,” until he was disqualified for multiple violations of the contest agreement, including using a BlackBerry. Iglesias was named Comedian of the Year by Comedy Central in 2006.

Bobby Lee June 23rd – 25th Bobby Lee, best known from his numerous years as a cast member on Madtv, can now be seen as a regular guest on E!’s “Chelsea Lately” and has been touring the country year round with his hilariously unpredictable stand up. With his unique brand of pain-inducing, physical humor, he has created such memorable original characters as the comically confused film critic “Johnny Gan,” the world’s worst interpreter “Bae Sung;” and hapless warrior the “Blind kung Fu Master”. Audiences have loved his takes on such real world figures as Connie Chung, North Korean President Kim Jong II, and presidential hopeful John McCain. Lee’s film credits include “Kickin’ It Old School” and “Killer Pad”; both features to be released later this year. In summer 2004, he appeared in the big screen comedy “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle.” Lee also appeared in “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Mind of Mencia,” and has performed stand up on “Late Friday,” “Premium Blend” and “The Tonight Show.” Showtimes: Thurs. 8:00PM /Fri. 7:30 & 9:45PM / Sat. 7:00 & 9:15PM / Sun. 7:00PM

Beer (and other) Gifts for Father’s Day Everybody has a difficult time buying for their dad. Dad is always the guy that seems to not want anything, so nothing will be just right. I remember giving my father the standard issue mug and classically ugly tie. This year get your dad something different. If you have a father who enjoys the occasional or more than occasional libation, maybe you can keep in mind one of these items as a great gift for your daddy. You can find most of these gifts with a quick web search. The Little Whizzer Liquor Dispenser: No longer will your dad have to host a party where him and his buddies just sit around and pour liquor out of the bottle. The statue is inspired by the MannekinPis statue in Brussels, Belgium. There are several legends surrounding this famous statue, so I’ll let you choose the one you like best. The most famous is the one about Duke Godfrey III of Leuven. In 1142, the troops of this twoyear-old lord were battling against the troops of the Berthouts, the lords of Grimbergen, in Ransbeke (now Neder-over-Heembeek). The troops put the infant lord in a basket and hung the basket in a tree to encourage them. From there, the boy urinated on the troops of the Berthouts, who eventually lost the battle.

In 1619 it was replaced by the current bronze statue, created by Franco-Flemish Baroque sculptor Jerome Duquesnoy, father of the more famous François of the same last name.

of the city until the boy was found happily urinating in a small garden. The merchant, as a gift of gratitude to the locals who helped out during the search, had the fountain built. All we know for sure is that the statue was put in place sometime around 1618 AD.

Another story (told often to tourists) tells of a wealthy merchant who, during a visit to the city with his family, had his beloved young son go missing. The merchant hastily formed a search party that scoured all corners

If the Little Whizzer isn’t your dad’s thing, there are also versions with an Old Man and a Scottish Golfer. Whichever one you choose, the liquor comes out the same way. Beer Pager: It’s any father’s worse nightmare, to put your beer down and then not be able to find it. Okay not the worse, but it sucks none the less. Well, friends, I say no more…not with the Beer Pager. Simply place your beer in the Beer Pager koozie. Then if tragedy

Another legend states that in the 14th century, Brussels was under siege by a foreign power. The city had held its ground for some time, so the attackers conceived of a plan to place explosive charges at the city walls. A little boy named Julianske happened to be spying on them as they were preparing. He urinated on the burning fuse and thus saved the city. There was at the time (middle of the 15th century, perhaps as early June 16th, 2011 - June 22nd, 2011

strikes and you can’t locate your cerveza, push the pager button that is hopefully in your pocket. And you will hear an audible noise and lights will flash around the base of the koozie for easy‑to‑find misplaced beer. Beer Pagers come in your choice of “Belch” or “Slots” sounds. Boob Ice Luge: This mold creates a libation luge in just a couple of days that can either chill your dad’s drinks for him and his buddies, or he can just use it for art around the house. For additional costs you can add LED lights to really get the party started. Any type of alcohol will do. Of course, you don’t have to use alcohol with this…these boobs can chill Metamucil too.

Beer Savers Silicone Bottle Caps: This may be one of the best ideas to come along. Sometimes you just can’t finish your beer, especially when it is a 22 ounce bottle. In the past you would have had to either force yourself to finish it or pour it down the drain. Now Dad can use one of these Silicone Bottle Caps. They come in a multi-color set of six. It just so happens that the fine folks at Atlas Bistro in Scottsdale will be offering one up on June 21st, a scant two days after Father’s Day. This isn’t just any beer dinner…the featured beers will be those of the Van Steenberge Brewery. You may know this brewery from beers like Gulden Draak and Piraat, but they make a whole range of wonderful beers including a couple of lambics. They are also the brewery that brews Papago Brewing’s Oude Zupiers for them.

If that wasn’t enough, seventh generation brewmaster and owner, JefVersele will be on hand for the event. If you have never met Jef, it is time to. You and your Dad will never experience a dinner just like this. And dads, if your child is too young to appreciate this meal with you, buy it for yourself. After spending all day Sunday with your progeny, you deserve a little me time. Contact Atlas Bistro directly at (480) 9902433 to make reservations So these are just a few options to switch it up a little bit for your dad. Just think of the great joy that your dad is going to have opening up a present of ice boobs or a little boy statue that can pee Jim Beam. Quite frankly, it’s the gift that keeps on giving. No matter what the gift, I’m sure what your dad actually wants is to spend some time with you. So take some time with your father this weekend, whether in person or over the phone and enjoy his special day together with one of these great gifts.

The Night Owl BY EVELYN ROMANS

Live at Yucca Tap Room

NOW RENTING!

Sales by Geis Realty, LLC

In preparation for a fun night out in Scottsdale, I have to be sure I have the necessities like cash, lip gloss, and the gel pads you place on the soles of high-heeled shoes. Sometimes I would rather not have to endure the pain of walking and dancing around for hours in heels that kill my soul starting from the feet up. Sometimes I’d rather just gather up a group of friends and head out to a small, cheap, dive bar for a night of casual fun. The Yucca Tap Room in Tempe is one of the oldest dive bars in town but I don’t have to tell you that because you’ll know once inside that it’s old school from the wooden paneled walls. There’s nothing really pretty to look at except for a possible hot lead singer in one of the many bands that rocks the stage there. This Saturday, Sun Ghost, The Donkeys, Genre, and The Snails will be playing. They have a great selection of beer to enjoy and once you start drinking it, you’ll probably find entertainment by watching the people enjoying the entertainment. So skip the cover charges, avoid the “my feet hurt” complaints, and listen to some live band music as you get your drink on. Saturday, June 18th. Crossroads: Southern and Mill. Open until 2 am. 21+ www. yuccatap.com

until 2. $5 entertainment fee. www.kazbar.net

3:1 Ratio Matters at Jackrabbit Lounge

This is interesting: Jackrabbit is only allowing women in at 10:00 on Saturdays to ensure better times for both sexes? I suppose. They’ll DJ Mantis Claw at Kazimierz World start letting the hungry dudes in at 11:00 once there are enough ladies drunk off the free Wine Bar champagne served from 10-11. I’m liking this. I’m a little reluctant to write about this place Who wants to party at a sausage-fested club because I love it so much and don’t want anyway? This may be an excellent idea for a scores of people trying to get in. But I will write girls’ night out. Bring your girls—even the ones about it because it is such a unique bar, I feel with boyfriends, and dance without the fear of as if when you go there for the first time, it’s a creeper grinding up on you while you drink like you suddenly become a more cultured, free champagne for an hour. And then it won’t worldly individual. When you find Kazimierz even matter when the boys come in because in Scottsdale and walk through its door which you’ll be too buzzed to care and at that point, read, “The truth is inside,” you feel as if you’ve you’ll want a cute, taller dancing partner/ entered a hidden castle lounge somewhere beverage sponsor. All the guys that start deep in Europe. Low lighting and cushioned coming in will feel like kings because they’ll be seating makes this place perfect for a relaxed amongst a higher ratio of women. Like ballers, evening with friends or a date. Make a great, they’ll purchase beverages to reach the level intimate conversation even better with one the women are already at and will probably of their succulent, small dishes over a glass fall in love with at least one of them. Maybe. of something you’ve never had before. Their Ratio does matter though and you’re probably immense wine and spirits list is intimidating curious to know the difference. So ladies come but ask the helpful and knowledgeable server if by at 10 on Saturday, and you boys can follow you get nervous. This Friday (and every Friday), in at 11. Saturdays. Open until 2:00 am. $5DJ Mantis Claw deejays soulful sounds to $10. 21+ add to your experience. Dress nicely, be ready to heighten all of your senses, and don’t tell anyone else about this place. Fridays. 9:00 pm – midnight. Kitchen open until 1:45, bar open

They can be found blazing their own trails in Tucson Arizona under the bright lights of Arizona’s premier MMA fighting organization, The World Fighting Federation. Inside the cage of the WFF, fight fans will find influences ranging from Cain Velasquez to Dominick Cruz.

WORLD FIGHTING FEDERATION 5 The WFF Announces Four Championship Fights Saturday, June 25th Live From The Casino Del Sol’s Pristine AVA Amphitheater The Arizona desert heat has become a blazing kiln capable of forging the most hardened of warriors who can compete on the grandest of stages. The sport of Mixed Martial Arts boasts more than one Champion and many elite competitors with Arizona ties. UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez, UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz, Bellator Middleweight Champion Ben Askren, MMA Legend Don Frye, Bader, West, Roop, Varner, Griggs, Ben Henderson, Simpson, Dollaway, the list goes on and on and on. All these warriors have Arizona roots. Imagine the crop of fighters that is coming behind them. When elite competitors like Ryan Bader, or Ben Askren make their legacies under the scorching desert sun, they leave in their wake a wealth of influence that takes hold within the next generation of warriors.

Such has been apparent across the WFF’s first four shows. With stellar performance upon stellar performance, the matchmaking combined with the heart and technique of WFF athletes has become the catalyst for a very unique and explosive type of hand to hand combat. The WFF staff is now looking to improve upon near perfection as they enter their fifth event ever. Being their fifth event, it is fitting that they offer an unprecedented four title bouts all on one card. Four title bouts is a strong statement for any MMA organization, but very few can boast such an event and offer not only a title fight atmosphere but actually deliver the electricity due for such an event. The staff at the WFF has brought together a phenomenal line up to answer the call. With twenty eight athletes stepping up to the plate equaling fourteen matches total, the WFF has broke the mold offering four title fights, the first of which is a rematch between respected adversaries Nick Piedmont and Michael Parker. These two first met at Bellator 41 when they helped ignite a fuse that led to an explosive evening of MMA. As these two Tucson based fighters touched gloves and went to war their fans and their camps were proud to watch them compete for one of the world’s most prestigious organizations. After three rounds of back and forth battle, even the judges were torn as they called the fight a split decision in the favor of Piedmont. Any fight fan looking on, no matter which way they felt the fight may have gone, they knew immediately that a rematch had to happen.

represent their camps Apex MMA and Boxing Inc. respectively in a rematch that is sure to please. It just so happens there is a WFF Featherweight Championship on the line as well. Up next in another rematch that is sure to be a stunner, Freddie Lux and Matt Betzold will meet again almost three years after they first fought. Their first tilt was a strategic and hard fought battle and now over two years later they will meet again as more seasoned and hardened fighters. This time they will fight for the victory but also to become the first ever WFF 125 pound champion. Both men are tremendous competitors and capable athletes. Their title bout will be sure to leave the crowd on their feet. Up next will be a classic Tucson vs Phoenix match up. Long has there been a rivalry between the Old Pueblo and the Valley. UofA vs ASU, oh the history. In this case the WFF Lightweight strap will be on the line as Benny Madrid of Scottsdale puts his title on the line against Tucson’s Chad Dietmeyer. Madrid is an electrifying competitor who has paid big dues to carry that title and Chad Dietmeyer will have his work cut out for him as he challenges for a title in one of the WFF’s most stacked divisions. Both men are hungry, both men are ready, and fight fans will want to keep their eyes on the action for this war which is scheduled for five rounds. Up next is one of the finest examples of what the future of MMA is all about. When championship influence is stated, it reflects in fighters like Nate Vorel. Having rolled with the likes of Dom Cruz, Vorel has taken advantage of the opportunity and absorbed the tutelage of the champ like a sponge. Cruz raves about Vorel’s potential and Vorel cherishes every bump and bruise he attains rolling and training with one of the world’s top ten pound for pound fighters Dom Cruz. Vorel looks to compete against John Moraga in the WFF Bantamweight division. No matter what happens, Moraga will have his hands full with Tucson fight fan favorite Nate Vorel. But Vorel understands that Moraga, who took the fight on short notice, is a dangerous opponent.

In the main event of the evening one of the sport’s brightest up and coming Arizona MMA fans get their wish June stars, current WFF Welterweight 25th as “War Monkey” and “No Limit” Champion Joey Rivera of Apex MMA will AZWeeklyMagazine.com

defend his title against Victor Meza of The MMA Lab. Fresh off a triangle choke win over Doug Gordon, Rivera will look to earn his third straight WFF win and to improve his stunning MMA record to 7-0. The MMA Lab’s Victor Meza is a gritty grinding opponent who may prove to be the stiffest test of Rivera’s career thus far, as he trains under the same flag as former WEC LW Champ Ben Henderson. One thing is certain, whoever comes out of that cage with the WFF WW title will be a true champion worthy of the honor. All in all it sounds like a stunning evening of open war inside an MMA cage and that is exactly what it will be. But at the end of the day it is another walk in the park for the staff at the World Fighting Federation as they coordinate yet another stunning presentation of MMA for Arizona fight fans.

GAME! SECTION

Many up and coming athletes in the southwest have gained invaluable insight and experience by taking influence from many top fighters in this sport. Seeing their predecessors find such success at the highest levels drives them to follow closely in their footsteps.

To know what The World Fighting Federation is all about look no further than the testimony of some of the world’s greatest fighters. Aaron Simpson, UFC MW- “Awesome promotion, the best fights in Arizona.” Ryan Bader, UFC LHW- “Those are good events, they are some of the best shows here in Arizona. They throw some great shows down in Tucson. They have a great crowd and it’s a great venue.” Ben Askren, Bellator WW Champion- “It was good, they had a lot of fans there. The fans were riled up. They had a lot of good fights.” And those are gentlemen who live, eat, and breathe MMA. The reputation speaks for itself and the WFF is looking to fill its own shoes Saturday June 25th as they showcase over a dozen fights, featuring a handful of title tilts that are sure to stun and electrify fight fans from the Arizona desert. The Pascua Yaqui tribe are welcoming the World Fighting Federation and their athletes into their gorgeous venue The AVA Amphitheater to showcase their warrior spirit and no Tucson fight fan wants to miss this potentially stunning event. These matchups represent just a fraction of the total fight card. With a potential fourteen overall fights, this fight card is sure to prove to be a compelling event. Ancient Egyptians used molted cobra skins as condoms. FRANCESCA WOLFSOHN INVESTMENT ADVISOR AZ 480~822~8176 NY 516~395~3299 SPRING FORWARD...FALL BACK

That’s what most of us say to ourselves when it’s time to change our clocks. Actually, we have a very wise man to thank for this… During his time as an American envoy to France, Benjamin Franklin, author of the proverb, “Early to bed, and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise,” anonymously published a letter suggesting that Parisians economize on candles by rising earlier to use morning sunlight. This 1784 satire proposed taxing shutters, rationing candles, and waking the public by ringing church bells and firing cannons at sunrise.

So, this then evolved into our little unbroken ritual. And this we do to keep us on course in our own little place in this vast universe. There is however another CLOCK, a VERY, VERY BIG CLOCK that one can observe constantly ticking away on Sixth Avenue (Avenue of the Americas) in Manhattan, New York City. It doesn’t tell us the time, but tells us where we stand, fiscally, at this time (REAL TIME that is).

The National Debt Clock. A billboard-sized running total dot-matrix display which constantly updates to show the current United States gross national debt and each American family’s share of the debt. The idea for the clock came from New York real estate developer Seymour Durst, who wanted to highlight the rising national debt. In 1989, he sponsored the installation of the first clock, which was erected on 42nd Street close to Times Square. At the time, the national debt remained under $3 trillion but was rising. The clock was temporarily switched off from 2000 to 2002 due to the debt actually falling during that period. In 2004, the original clock was dismantled and replaced by the current clock at the new location one block away. In 2008, the U.S. national debt exceeded $10 trillion for the first time, leading to press reports that the clock had run out of digits.

Moths are unable to fly during an earthquake.

The city of Slaughter, Texas (population: 11,284), has never had a homicide occur within its boundaries.

More than 4 million junk phone solicitations by persons or programmed machines are made every day in the United States. As the sheer volume of Internet traffic has increased, the friction of the electrons passing around the planet has increased the overall global temperature by .07 degrees.

As an American, as a functioning participant in our fiscal economy, this clock has great importance to me. Even I, with my financial education and experience still have to recite SPRING FORWARD… FALL BACK, WHEN IT’S TIME TO CHANGE MY CLOCKS. How do I begin to comprehend that big clock on Sixth Avenue. And who comes up with the #s to back it? HMMM. Ponder that.

It takes glass one million years to decompose, which means it never wears out and can be recycled an infinite amount of times.

THE BASTARD SONS OF JOHNNY CASH Live at Cave Creek Coffee Company On Saturday, June 18th the Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash return to Cave Creek Coffee Company (C4) performing songs from their newest album titled, “Bend in the Road.” The country music band led by singer and songwriter Mark Stuart formed in 1995 in San Diego, California and have since opened for Willie Nelson, among others. Rolling Stone describes their music as “Pure Americana heart and soul-almost as badass as the black clad man for whom they’re named”. Billboard says, “The Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash capture the lonesomeness of Cash, the strippeddown melodies of Nebraska-era Bruce Springsteen, the rowdiness of Steve Earle and morphs them into a captivating collection that blends twang and sophistication.” Their songs have also been described as “Haggardish” set in crisply played backgrounds of fiddle, mandolin, pedal steel and lots of guitars. Tickets are $12.00 in advance online or $15.00 at the door. For more information about The Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash concert at Cave Creek Coffee Company please call 480.488.0603 or visit the website at www.cavecreekcoffee.com
