Dominic Amato Album Release Concert presented by Sage Court / BTW Concerts at Sage Court / JW Marriot Desert Ridge Friday, June 24 7:00pm

Dominic Amato was born into a family of musicians. His father is a saxophonist, his mother a multi instrumentalist, and his brother a vocal artist. Dominic began experimenting with musical instruments from a very young age. He began dabbling with the drums. But drawn to the wonderful sound of his father’s saxophone, it wouldn’t be long before Dominic would trade in his drumset for a sax of his own. While honing his woodwind skills, Dominic took

A young girl with big dreams falls for a motorcycle-riding stud who charges into town, and suddenly the laws of attraction are turned on their head. All Shook Up is built around the songs made famous by the one-and-only Elvis Presley. Heartbreak Hotel, Love Me Tender, Hound Dog, It’s Now or Never, Don’t Be Cruel, Jailhouse Rock, and many others are the iconic hits that create the perfect backdrop for finding love in the unlikeliest of places.

On Stage NOW At Arizona Broadway Theatre! The Story Is All New. The Songs Are All Elvis. Kick start your summer at Arizona Broadway Theatre (ABT) as you step back in time to the good old days of 1955 and get ALL SHOOK UP. ALL SHOOK UP is a quirky love story with the same charm of musical theatre hits Grease, Footloose and Bye Bye Birdie. Inspired by and featuring the songs of Elvis Presley and based on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, it is

Schoen. Twelfth Night is just your typical boy meets girl story, except most of the boys seem to like the same girl. And some of the girls are dressed as boys, and somebody’s wearing yellow stockings. Twelfth Night brings you a group of people who do very strange things for love, in a place where wit is the standard currency and anything worth doing is worth doing to excess.

Comedy, tragedy, passion, grief, love, mistaken identities...this play may not have it all, but that’s only because we couldn’t get a dog. So bring an open mind (and if you’re anything like Sir Toby Belch, an open container) and settle in for an evening of ups and downs in this storm-tossed world of unrequited love.

Jailhouse Rock, Love Me Tender, Blue Suede Shoes and many more.

Meet Chad, a good looking, hip swiveling, guitar strumming, motorcycleriding roustabout who just got out of jail. In need of mechanic services for his bike, he turns off the highway and charges into a square little town, in the middle of a square Midwest state causing all the small town girls to go crazy. Enter Natalie, the mechanic who turns out to be a girl. She promises to repair his bike, but really wants to overhaul his heart. Get nostalgic and jam to classic Elvis tunes like Don’t Be Cruel, Teddy Bear/ Hound Dog, Can’t Help Falling in Love,

ABT’s luxurious auditorium comfortably accommodates 400 guests with unobstructed views of the stage from every seat. The VIP balcony seats an additional 44 with tables for two and four. ...Continued from page 11. Fort McDowell logo and helicopter sitting center stage above a delicious caramel lined cake. The ambiance of the room was complemented by the popular musical styling of Chris Putrino. Player Services Manager, Gwen Bahe, kicked off the presentation of the evening, speaking on behalf of the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation and Fort McDowell Casino. Acknowledgments and congratulations were extended to those who had so successfully helped create the event. Bruce Haffner of 3TV, the celebrity guest and renowned pilot of the chopper took the stage to a thunderous ovation. He spoke passionately about his lifelong dream of becoming a pilot, and how he achieved it through a career in the TV news. His emotional story solidifies the ideal that anyone can achieve their dreams if they invest the work and ambition. The partnership between Haffner and

Fort McDowell had been in the works for over three years. Haffner detailed the journey of flying the helicopter from Texas and the increasing excitement he had while delivering it to The Valley. With the connection of the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation and Fort McDowell Casino, a special traditional blessing was bestowed upon Bruce and the news chopper, which Bruce described as, “the one of the most honorable moments of his career.” Then the party moved outside, where a dazzling Arizona sunset blanketed the mysteriously sheathed chopper. The black draping was then removed - uncovering the helicopter embellished with the vibrant Fort McDowell branding that will surely be visible to everyone as it makes its way across The Valley. As the applause and plethora of pictures commenced, all those in attendance were in agreement - the unveiling of the Fort McDowell News Chopper was a rousing success. Fort McDowell Casino has become and will continue to be legendary for setting the standard for excellence in gaming, dining and entertainment in The Valley of the Sun and the desert

This recording is only available at this year’s live shows. There will be another version released in June that is exclusive to Target. Ottmar Liebert is widely regarded as a modern virtuoso of flamenco guitar. Since 1990 he has released a total of 26 recordings, five of which have been nominated for Grammy’s. Liebert has sold over 5 million CD’s in the U.S. and currently has 30 Gold and Platinum awards to his credit. Their ability to connect with concert audiences is inspiring – so don’t miss this chance to witness what could be a transformational show. Bet You Didn’t Know! by Stan Robinson

Interview: Writer/ Director Mike Mills (Beginners) By Joseph J. Airdo In “Beginners,” Ewan McGregor plays a young man who is rocked by two announcements from his elderly father (Christopher Plummer): that he has terminal cancer and that he has a young male lover. It is a semi-autobiographical tale for Mills, so to speak, right down to McGregor’s character projecting a conversation onto his deceased father’s dog. “My dad had a Jack Russel that I inherited and I talk to him all the time,” says Mills, noting he has a similar relationship with his border collie. “I come at it from this art school angle where everything is OK.” Mills explains that rather than attending film school like most directors, he hails from Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. Therefore, he approaches his projects with the belief that a motion picture is a collage of various elements that, together, make an exceptionally dense concept.

“Beginners” is Mills’ sophomore feature. And while he maintains that his 2005 directorial debut “Thumbsucker” will always be very dear to him, the filmmaker “I’ve always known that I love directing but I was really aware of it while making Beginners cites this cinematic effort as the one that prompted the realization of just how important his career is to his inherent happiness. Mills explains. “I am my happiest when I’m on set directing. I am also my kindest. When the actors get in front of the camera, it makes them very vulnerable. I am

Interview: Director Monte Hellman (‘Road to Nowhere’) By Joseph J. Airdo

‘17 Miracles’

“Road to Nowhere,” which opens this weekend exclusively at Harkins Valley Art, is cult director Monte Hellman’s first feature-length motion picture since 1989’s “Silent Night, Deadly Night 3: Better Watch Out!” - a filmmaking gap of more than 20 years.

As part of the Willie Handcart Company, Levi Savage (Jason Wade) feared that leaving late in the season would lead to despair and death. What he came to find is that for every tragedy, there are a multitude of miracles. Playing exclusively at Harkins North Valley 16 and Harkins Superstition Springs 25. (PG – 102 minutes)

“The gap was not my choice,” explains Hellman, citing several projects that have fallen by the wayside over the years, including Miramax’s “Freaky Deaky.” “My daughter decided that we had a basic error in our game plan. We were waiting for other people to give us permission to make movies. She said, ‘Let’s just do it ourselves.’ She went out and raised the money and we did that.” The result is a film Hellman calls “far and away” his personal favorite. In “Road to Nowhere,” Tygh Runyan stars as Mitchell Haven, a director who casts a beautiful young woman named Laurel Graham (Shannyn Sossamon) in his new film – a true crime story – only to have his obsessed attempt to transform passions and misfortunes into art blow up in his face. “In a lot of ways, I think of myself as a skinny Hitchcock,” says Hellman, noting that allows his actors to create their own environment through instinctive beauty. “But in one important way we differ. And that is he likes to know exactly what the movie is going to be before he starts - and I don’t want to know. I just enjoy being surprised on the set and surprised with the final product.” Read more from Joseph J. Airdo’s interview with “Road to Nowhere” director Monte Hellman exclusively online at Examiner.com/ Phoenix.

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Joseph: “Writer/director T.C. Christensen’s ‘17 Miracles’ is a movie one will desperately want to like but, unfortunately, the science of reasoning wins out in the end. After all, it is admirable that the new LDS film strives so painstakingly to inspire audiences regardless of their religious beliefs – on such a puny production budget no less (reportedly below $1 million) – but even divine intervention could not mask its technical imperfections.” Grade: D

‘Beginners’ A young man (Ewan McGregor) is rocked by two announcements from his elderly father (Christopher Plummer): that he has terminal cancer and that he has a young male lover. Also starring Melanie Laurent. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 105 minutes) Joseph: “‘Beginners’ effectively explains that sometimes the simple source of melancholy is the complexity of existence. Writer/director Mike Mills’ semi-autobiographical tale is charming in its sincerity about life’s inherent woes and its celebration of our determination to (eventually) overcome them. However, it is in that forced juxtaposition that the movie becomes the latest in a long line of recent independent flicks that are a bit too quirky for comfort.” Grade: C

by her sugar daddy, begins to woo a colleague, a move that pits her against a well-loved teacher. (R-92 minutes)

A cinematic profile of noted veteran New York City fashion photographer Bill Cunningham. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (NR – 84 minutes)

‘Cars 2’

Randy: Beginners is the first true Academy Award contender of the year. Its summer release may prove a challenge to critics making out their end of year “best of lists,” as we often glance over many releases that come prior to the Fall award season. McGregor, Plummer and Laurent shine in this heartfelt, touching and very funny comedy/drama. If ever was the case to give an Oscar for “Best Performance by Animal,” little Arthur easily snags this one. Grade: A

Joseph: “‘Bill Cunningham New York’ provides a solid argument as to how a spirited perspective benefits one’s lifeblood. However, Richard Press’s eccentric documentary about an even more eccentric individual is definitely not for everybody – especially those non-New Yorkers who have never heard of Bill Cunningham. Moreover, when all is said and done, the flick feels slightly shallow, opting to celebritize the man rather than examine the significance of his art.” Grade: C

‘The Big Uneasy’

‘Road to Nowhere’

The documentary follows the leaders of two scientific investigation teams, and one whistleblower, as they reveal the true story of why the city of New Orleans flooded in the aftermath of category 5 Hurricane Katrina in 2005. (98 minutes) Special screening on Thursday June 23, 2011 of ‘The Big Uneasy’ presented by the Phoenix Film Society at the Harkins Theater Scottsdale 101 in Phoenix, AZ.

A young filmmaker (Tygh Runyan) gets wrapped up in a crime while shooting his new project on location. Also starring Shannyn Sossamon. Playing exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. (R – 121 minutes)

Stan: “A stark revelation with the line from the documentary, ‘Crop insurance is the worst thing for America’s rivers since the Army Corps of Engineers’, gives an indication of the fervor at the heart of the controversy of ‘Is nature or man responsible for the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina on the city of New Orleans?’…” Grade: B Randy: An interesting documentary about one of the country’s biggest natural disasters and how it possibly could have been prevented. While providing a lot of facts, not all of my questions were answered, leaving me wanting more. Whether that’s a good thing for a documentary or not, is up for debate. The Big Uneasy is worth a look and a tad bit of follow-up research. Grade: B-

Joseph: “One may not understand even an ounce of what occurs in ‘Road to Nowhere’ but it is difficult to deny the motion picture’s enigmatic beauty. Cult director Monte Hellman’s first featurelength project in more than 20 years is the epitome of style over substance. Whether or not one will gather any meaning from the movie is the greatest mystery of all. Yet, the time-warped neo-noir works as, if nothing else, a priceless piece of cinematic art.” Grade: C

Now Playing! The following new releases were not screened in time for AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s press deadline. Read Joseph J. Airdo, Randy Montgomery and Stan Robinson’s full reviews exclusively online at Examiner.com, AZWeeklyMagazine.com and ScreenScene. org, respectively.

Star racecar Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and his pal Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) head overseas to compete in the World Grand Prix race. But the road to the championship becomes rocky as Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage. (G – 112 minutes)

‘Circo’ A documentary about a hardscrabble traveling Mexican circus troupe that has lived and performed on the road since the 19th Century, but will their art survive into the 21st? Playing exclusively at the Film Bar in downtown Phoenix, AZ (75 minutes)

‘How to Live Forever’ Baby boomer Mark Wexler travels the world searching for the secrets of long life. Playing exclusively at Harkins Shea 14. (NR – 92 minutes)

‘Stingray Sam’ A dangerous mission reunites Stingray Sam (Cory McAbee) with his long lost accomplice, the Quasar Kid (Crugie) as the two space convicts try to earn their freedom in exchange for the rescue of a young girl who is being held captive by the genetically designed figurehead of a very wealthy planet. Playing exclusively at Film Bar downtown Phoenix. (61 minutes)

‘The Big Uneasy’ ~ A stark look at a ‘Manmade disaster?’ By Stan Robinson In the feature-length documentary ‘The Big Uneasy’, humorist and New Orleans resident Harry Shearer, who wrote, directed, and narrates the film, gets the inside story from the people who were there, of a disaster that could have been prevented after category 5 Hurricane

Katrina caused levees to give way. Hurricane Katrina (August 23-30, 2005) is rated as the costliest natural disaster, as well as one of the five deadliest hurricanes, in the history of the United States. Among recorded Atlantic Ocean hurricanes, it was the sixth strongest with winds of 175 mph and $81.2 billion in damage, the costliest hurricane in US history. Shearer speaks to the investigators and experts who poked through the remnants left behind as the water receded, and uncovers a courageous whistle-blower from the Army Corps of Engineers. Harry Shearer’s pursuit of facts reveals that some of the same flawed methods responsible for levee failure during Hurricane Katrina are being used to rebuild the system expected to protect the “new” New Orleans from future peril. (98 minutes)

Stan: “Writer/director Mike Mills’ reminds us of the individuality that each of our lives warrants and the strength of love that can, and should be, that catalyst if not for understanding, certainly for acceptance. “Beginners” succeeds in its uneasiness to stir our own emotions as the three central characters strive for emotional middle ground.” Grade: B-

Bobby Lee, best known from his numerous years as a cast member on Madtv, can now be seen as a regular guest on E!’s “Chelsea Lately” and has been touring the country year round with his hilariously unpredictable stand up. With his unique brand of pain-inducing, physical humor, he has created such memorable original characters as the comically confused film critic “Johnny Gan,” the world’s worst interpreter “Bae Sung;” and hapless warrior the “Blind kung Fu Master”. Audiences have loved his takes on such real world figures as Connie Chung, North Korean President Kim Jong II, and presidential hopeful John McCain. Lee’s film credits include “Kickin’ It Old School” and “Killer Pad”; both features to be released later this year. In summer 2004, he appeared in the big screen comedy “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle.” Lee also appeared in “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Mind of Mencia,” and has performed stand up on “Late Friday,” “Premium Blend” and “The Tonight Show.” Showtimes: Thurs. 8:00PM /Fri. 7:30 & 9:45PM / Sat. 7:00 & 9:15PM / Sun. 7:00PM

Christopher Titus July 8th – 10th His mother, a manic-depressive schizophrenic, was in and out of

mental institutions throughout his childhood. She killed her third husband and later killed herself. His father was an alcoholic who was fairly brutal to him his whole life. His wife of fifteen years forged checks, cleaned out his bank accounts, and cheated on him with two men. While most people would want to suck on a bullet just reading the above, Titus turned it into comedy. Is it possible that Christopher Titus is the greatest working comic of our time? Employing what he’s labeled “hard funny,” Christopher Titus has released three ninety-minute albums in as many years. That’s 270 minutes of material when most comics do the same act for years. He has three one-hour comedy specials currently running on Comedy Central. After years of experimentation with dark and personal storytelling, he debuted his one-man show “Norman Rockwell is Bleeding” at the Hudson Theater in Los Angeles. It was from this performance that the dark comedy, “Titus,” was born on Fox. The show earned Titus a Writer’s Guild nomination as well as an Emmy nomination, and Newsday called him “TV’s most original voice since Seinfeld.” Inspired by such greats as Woody Allen, Steve Martin, and Cosby, who wrote, directed, produced and performed, Titus has sold ideas to NBC, ABC, FOX and Comedy Central. His pilot “Special Unit” which is about four disabled detectives, is edgy and laugh-out-loud funny. Titus describes it as “The Shield with handicapped people” and is shooting for film production in 2010. His script “Five Seconds” has been optioned by High Road Entertainment and is slated for a 2011 release. If after all of this you still have any doubts about Christopher Titus being the best comic working, then go watch him perform live. With the complete package of comedy, acting and writing, there hasn’t been someone like him in a long time.

Sushi & Grill Copper Blues Spreading Plenty of Summer Cheer

60+ Taps of Beer and Great Cuisine at CityScape Stand Up Live, Joel Bachkoff’s classy new comedy club in CityScape, opened its doors on April 29th. Now its sister operation, an equally plush but comfortable restaurant-lounge dubbed Copper Blues, is open for business as well. Bachkoff, a veteran of the entertainment business who owns comedy clubs in Florida and Kentucky, knew he wanted to elevate the experience by giving guests an elegant setting and something they never get at a comedy club: great food. To that end, he wooed and eventually enlisted celebrity chef Aaron May —the creative force behind Over Easy, The Lodge, Mabel’s on Main, Iruña, Vitamin T and May’s Counter (Tucson) — to create menus for both venues. PederBondhus, May’s right hand man at Vitamin T (also in CityScape), oversees the kitchen for both of Bachkoff’s operations. “Except for a handful of comedy club standards such as chicken fingers and sweet potato fries, we make everything from scratch,” Bondhus says, pointing out that he and his talented young kitchen staff brine the chickens, marinate and braise the St. Louis-style ribs, make their own vinaigrettes and add fancy flourishes such as a tarragon-scented strawberry sauce to three house-made desserts.

June 23rd, 2011 - June 29th, 2011

Both menus offer plenty of price range options as well. Stand Up Live guests might snack on a sophisticated cheese plate (think Manchego with cherry preserves) or splurge on seared diver scallops with grilled shrimp and roasted mushrooms. At Copper Blues, the menu focuses on upscale but moderately priced American tapas, including lamb sliders with Maytag blue cheese and harissa aioli, roasted fingerlings with bacon and tomato jam and lobster roll with tarragon mayo and pickled Fresno chiles. An abbreviated lunch menu will feature nine items for $9. From the long, zigzag bar at one end of Copper Blues’ warm, welcoming room come 64 draft beers, a half dozen of them from local breweries. Thanks to its second floor location, surrounded by high-rises and overlooking Central Avenue, the restaurant (its ceiling outfitted with massive copper pipes) promises to be a sweet spot for visitors and locals who want a taste of downtown Phoenix’s increasingly lively street scene. Views from the multi-windowed patio dining room are stunning. For extra sensory perception, expect the city’s hottest bands and DJs on Copper Blues’ stage bar. Extreme cuisine for the adventurer in you

You know how much of a pain it is to stop at the grocery store on your way home from work to pick up something you need to make dinner? Well, thanks to “Extreme Chef,” premiering Thursday, June 30, on Food Network, we now have no legitimate reason to complain. Why? Because on “Extreme Chef,” chefs are taken so far out of their comfort zones that they might as well be MacGyver with little more than duct tape and a garlic press. Each week the show, hosted by television veteran and world traveler Marsh Mokhtari, tests three chefs’ ability to adapt to ever-changing conditions in less-than-ideal environs.

FOOD AND BEER: THE ART OF THE PERFECT PAIR Through the ages, it has been a common belief that wine is the best beverage to match with food. There is a belief that it enhances the food experience far beyond any other drink. However, a more modern school of thought holds that beer, in fact, is the superior beverage to pair with meals. Beer can be the perfect complement to a meal, while wine can sometimes overwhelm the palate. Virtually every cuisine can be enhanced by pairing the proper beers with it. There are no traditional, firm rules about pairing food and beer. The biggest rule is that there are no rules. Although some guidelines do exist to help you find the best pairing. Hoppy beers generally pair well with heartier

The hops stand up well to the spice and help prepare the palate for the next bite. Of course complementary flavors always do nicely (sweet with sweet), but so do contrasting flavors. If you can’t get past the idea of wine as a food pairing, you can look at the more full bodied ales as red wines, and the cleaner, crisper lagers as white wines. Hoppier beers tend to equate to a more acidic wine and would be used in place of those. In the same way wine can be incorporated into the cooking process, so to can beer. There are many great recipes out there that include beer, and it gives you a ready made beer to drink with the dish. For those of you that are ready to step beyond the traditional beer and pizza and explore

a little bit, let’s take a look at some interesting Belgian beers and some possible pairings. Belgian beers are known for their complexity and flavors, consequently they pair well with a variety of foods. The Belgian beer culture arose much the way the wine culture did in France or Italy. Much like these two countries, production was often done on an individual basis. Many of these in home producers were family farms where the beer was brewed for the family as well as any workers. Traditional farmhouse ales are known as saisons and are now brewed in the French speaking portion of the country. The most well known of these beers is Saison Dupont, which is still brewed on a working farm. Of course, a beer like this goes well with farm style foods, sausage, root vegetables

and the like. But to really appreciate it, try it with peppery foods, steak au poivre, Cajun, Vietnamese, and for

By James Swann Hello all and welcome to the first installment of my weekly journey through the best beers available for sale here in our home state of Arizona. This week’s focus is on Ballast Point Brewing co.’s Sculpin IPA. I chose Sculpin as my first subject because as India Pale Ales go, it’s currently my favorite!

BEER! SECTION

Sculpin IPA, Ballast Point Brewing Co. San Diego CA.

For those who have not yet experienced Ballast Point beers, let’s chat for a moment about their history. Ballast Point Brewing co. is located in San Diego CA. and began as a modest home brew store back in 1992. Owned by Jack White, the brew store began producing its own beers in 1996 with the help of YussefCherney - and Ballast Point Brewing was born. “Real beer lovers making real good beer” is their slogan – and I have to say I agree. Sculpin IPA is very much a west coast style with lots of hop character for bittering and just a touch of malt for balance. At 7% ABV & 70 IBU’s this brew fits firmly into the IPA category. A 2010 gold medal winner at the World Beer Cup for International Pale Ales, highlights include a huge citrus character with a medium body and mouth feel that really allows all that hop character to shine. Flavors of bitter lemon, mango and tropical fruit abound while just a touch of pine resin lurks in the background reminding you that this is an IPA to be taken seriously.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeverages.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

RateBeer.com gives Sculpin IPA a perfect score of 100 for style and overall quality/ appearance. While always here in limited supply, it can be found for purchase at better craft beer outlets such as Top’s Liquor, Whole Foods Chandler & Sun Devil Liquor. On an even better note, it can be found periodically on tap at Flanny’s, The Hungry Monk, Yucca Tap Room and Papago Brewing. As I said to start, this is my current favorite IPA. I hope after reading this you will try it yourself and send me your comments @ kingjamesswann@ gmail.com. Until next week, Cheers!

...Continued from page 34. a great cheese pairing, aged Gouda. Really, with the exception of desserts and tomato based sauces, this beer will pair well with anything. It might be the ultimate food beer. Tripel Karmeliet from Bosteels Brewery is a nice Belgian Tripel with a pleasing flavor and a subtle complexity. Made from barley, wheat and oats the beer provides a combination of spicy and creamy with a hint of sweetness. All of this makes Tripel Karmeliet an excellent food beer. Salmon or roasted chicken would make a good match, or take a stretch and pair it with a light Italian meal. Any lightly sauced dish, especially a mild pork dish makes a good pairing with this beer. Like many of these beers, it will go with a wide range of food. Van Steenberge brewery makes many wonderful beers from Augustijn, a nice table beer to Gulden Draak, a very interesting dark trippel.

June 23rd, 2011 - June 29th, 2011

Unique in that trippels are usually light in color and a little spicy, Gulden Draak changes the playing field. Redolent with flavors of roasted malts, butter, candied sugar, raisins, plums, bread, and a slight alcoholic kick, this is the beer for bigger foods. Short ribs, venison, other game foods, even roasted chicken would all be an absolute perfect match for this. Sweeter barbecue sauces would be a nice pairing as well. At the other end of the Belgian spectrum are the witbiers, or Beligan Whites. These are similar to their German cousin the Hefeweizen in that they are unfiltered wheat beers. That is the end of the comparison. Unfettered by the Reinheitsgebot that ties German brewers to four basic ingredients, the Belgians look for adjuncts that enhance the flavor and the body of the beer, not dull it down or make it cheaper to produce.

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Witbiers are no different. Left for dead in the late 1940’s this style was revived by a milkman named Pierre Celis in 1966. Mr. Celis recreated the style and almost single-handedly became responsible for the current proliferation of this beer. The traditional witbier is flavored with Curacao orange peel and a little coriander. The consensus is that this beer is the perfect beer to pair with salads, as long as it doesn’t have a sugary sweet dressing. It’s perfect with vinaigrettes and will stand tall with any salad fixings you choose to use. This is also an excellent brunch beer. The beer provides the perfect contrast in egg dishes and the acidity makes it a good match for breakfast meats. One of the most unusual styles from Belgium is the Flemish Red or Brown. Brewed with house yeasts and bacterial strains designed to produce an amazing range of flavors, these beers can be an acquired taste. However, once you have discovered these beers, there may be no turning back. Typically darker in color, these beers have a bit of nuttiness with a hint of chocolate. They also are acidic, even vinegary (but in a good way). Typically they will remind the drinker of a nice dry sherry. Rodenbach is the best selling of these beers. Pair this beer with shrimp or egg dishes, a nice shrimp and gruyere omelet sounds like a good match. Other shellfish go equally well with this delightful beer, in fact just about any fish will be perfect with Rodenbach. Think of anything that contains citrus or vinegar, or something you would squeeze a lemon on to and you have the right meal for Rodenbach. The end of this story is simple. Try a nice beer with your next meal. Look for the complementary or contrasting flavors and experiment. Don’t be afraid to cook with beer, and enjoy the same beer with the meal. Best serving temperatures for beers like these are cellar temperature so the full aroma and flavor is realized. Serve them in a tulip or wine glass to allow the nose to enjoy the beer as well, and to enhance the flavor. No matter what you choose, the important thing is to enjoy.

The Night Owl Scottsdale’s 60 Grand Soiree at The W Hotel

th

Not only do I love spending a night out on the town, but I also enjoy spending time outside of town. Tokyo, Rome, NYC, LA, and Vegas all have different nightlife scenes that are memorable and fun but I always seem to miss good old Scottsdale when I’m away from it. My fellow Scottsdale fiends understand the difference. The people and culture here is different and the convenience of having so many bars and clubs concentrated in the same area gives our weekend evenings variety and the chance for multiple adventures. If Scottsdale didn’t exist, we’d be frequenting Mill way too often and would never get the chance to wear all our snazzy cocktail attire. Thank goodness Scottsdale was born 60 years ago. For those who are just as grateful and ready to celebrate the city we all like to celebrate in, there is going to be a huge birthday bash at the W on Saturday. Scottsdizzy’s birthday party will be cowboy themed, so bust out your boots and hat and don’t worry about taking a bathroom mirror picture because there will be photo booths available for you to make kissy faces in instead. DJ Soulman will be spinning western infused music to add tunes to your summer’s party soundtrack. Saturday, June 25th. 8:00pm. Free. 21+

heading back into the party. You’ll be freshly entertained and people will comment on how awesome your costume looks to make you feel like David Bowie. There will also be a contest held for best costume with cash prizes. Think of all the black jack you can play with your winnings! Saturday, June 25th. 8:00pm. $15/ person - $25/couple. Decades Dance Party at

Saturday Night Trivia at Boulders on Broadway

This year you won’t have to wait until Halloween to wear something inspired by decades past. Instead, just head over to the Talking Stick Resort on the 101 and Indian Bend on Saturday and no one will judge you for wearing excessive amounts of purple eye shadow and hairspray. Dress in 70s, 80s, or 90s fashion and dance to live band music associated with the decade. The Polyesters will supply the disco, Metal Ball will pop out your 80s, and let Badmotorfinger make you relive your grunge years. DJ Kilo will ensure that top 40 and club country will also be injected into your nighttime amusement. This should be fun because if you get hungry and need a break from being an animal on the dance floor, you can just step into the casino and try your luck on the tables or slot machines and enjoy a little snack before

If you like your beer then I would highly recommend spending one of your Saturday evenings here. Boulders is cool because you can ride your bike here and park it inside this surprisingly roomy bar. Inside you’ll have the choice of sitting (or standing) downstairs where you’ll be surrounded with multiple TVs and hipster bikers, or upstairs where you’ll get a better view of the action below. You’ll also get to choose amongst over 30 draft handles and over 70 plus bottles of a delicious brew. Oh the choices. I’ve never regretted one there yet—both the beer and food served are amazing. Conversations over beer with friends is a good time but add trivia to the mix and people start getting excited and overly confident with their knowledge on random facts. Feel like impressing your buddies and the world with your intelligence? Check this place out. Saturdays at 8:30 pm. www. bouldersonbroadway.com

David Feherty

eschews political correctness in new Golf offering

“Best Sports Bar”

Everyone loves a good golf story, and David Feherty is just the man to tell them. The longtime course reporter for CBS’ coverage of the PGA Tour brings his irreverent wit to Golf Channel with David the eponymously titled “Feherty,” a Tuesday offering that Feherty features interviews with personalities from the worlds of golf, entertainment and politics, anecdotes from the host’s 30-plus years as a player and broadcaster, and plenty of his signature candor. “Yeah, it’s a talk show certainly in that it’s an interview-based show, and I tend to ask questions, too, that other people might think about asking but don’t really want to,” the 52-year-old native of Northern Ireland explains. “You know, because of my own brutal honesty, which is the way I deal with life – it just seems so much simpler than having to invent stuff; so much effort goes into that, which sometimes insults people. Especially political correctness, which is just a euphemism for bulls... . I’m just not good at that. And I’m lucky enough if I’m ordinarily correct. I’m seldom correct, but I’m never in doubt, if you know what I mean.” June 23rd, 2011 - June 29th, 2011 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Shannon Boxx has been a mainstay on the U.S. national soccer team since 2003. She has two Olympic gold medals to show among her many achievements on the international stage, as well as a lifetime of memories in helping maintain the Americans’ lofty status in the women’s game. What she doesn’t have – not yet, at least – is what all soccer players who pull on their countries’ colors and compete in the biggest tournament of them all ever want: a World Cup title. The 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off from Germany on Sunday, June 26, and the United States is one of 16 national teams taking part in the monthlong quadrennial event. For Boxx, a veteran of two previous World Cups, it’s perhaps her final chance to

2011’s

win a world crown, as she turns 34 the day after the U.S. plays its first match on Tuesday, June 28, against North Korea (airing live on ESPN). The experience, toughness and smarts Boxx provides at the midfield position should serve the Americans well as they embark upon upholding their No. 1 world ranking. Boxx has started 139 of her 145 career games with the U.S. national team, a force on both defense and, with 22 career goals, on the attack. She immediately established herself in the 2003 World Cup, starting all five matches and scoring twice, including a goal in the third-place-clinching win. Boxx also represented the U.S. in the 2007 World Cup and once again helped the Americans finish third.

BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW

“Forty” is the only number which has its letters in alphabetical order. “One” is the only number with its letters in reverse alphabetical order.

FRANCESCA WOLFSOHN INVESTMENT ADVISOR AZ 480~822~8176 NY 516~395~3299 SPRING FORWARD...FALL BACK

That’s what most of us say to ourselves when it’s time to change our clocks. Actually, we have a very wise man to thank for this… During his time as an American envoy to France, Benjamin Franklin, author of the proverb, “Early to bed, and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise,” anonymously published a letter suggesting that Parisians economize on candles by rising earlier to use morning sunlight. This 1784 satire proposed taxing shutters, rationing candles, and waking the public by ringing church bells and firing cannons at sunrise.

So, this then evolved into our little unbroken ritual. And this we do to keep us on course in our own little place in this vast universe. There is however another CLOCK, a VERY, VERY BIG CLOCK that one can observe constantly ticking away on Sixth Avenue (Avenue of the Americas) in Manhattan, New York City. It doesn’t tell us the time, but tells us where we stand, fiscally, at this time (REAL TIME that is).

The National Debt Clock. A billboard-sized running total dot-matrix display which constantly updates to show the current United States gross national debt and each American family’s share of the debt. The idea for the clock came from New York real estate developer Seymour Durst, who wanted to highlight the rising national debt. In 1989, he sponsored the installation of the first clock, which was erected on 42nd Street close to Times Square. At the time, the national debt remained under $3 trillion but was rising. The clock was temporarily switched off from 2000 to 2002 due to the debt actually falling during that period. In 2004, the original clock was dismantled and replaced by the current clock at the new location one block away. In 2008, the U.S. national debt exceeded $10 trillion for the first time, leading to press reports that the clock had run out of digits.

Shortly before his execution, Timothy McVeigh constructed a scale model of the Lincoln Memorial with soda crackers.

“Duff” is the decaying organic matter found on a forest floor. Scientists estimate that sleep lost due to daylight saving time reduces the average lifespan by nearly two full months.

The Internal Revenue Service audits 87 percent of women who claim breast implants as tax deductions.

Human tonsils can bounce higher than a rubber ball of similar weight and size, but only for the first 30 minutes after they’ve been removed. Molecularly speaking, water is actually much drier than sand.

As an American, as a functioning participant in our fiscal economy, this clock has great importance to me. Even I, with my financial education and experience still have to recite SPRING FORWARD… FALL BACK, WHEN IT’S TIME TO CHANGE MY CLOCKS. How do I begin to comprehend that big clock on Sixth Avenue. And who comes up with the #s to back it? HMMM. Ponder that. FOR A VETERAN INVESTMENT ADVISOR’S EXPERTISE

Contrary to popular belief, the white is not the healthiest part of an egg. It’s actually the shell.

they can reach. While their music draws from the traditional country sounds of Hank Williams and the high energy rock ‘n’ roll of Chuck Berry’s guitar, Girls Guns & Glory has taken their influences and blended them into something entirely original, modern and exciting. They are currently working on their fourth album. Tickets are $10ADV/$12DOS and are now available at www.thecompoundgrill. com, 480.585.5483 or at the Compound Grill Box Office.
