ARTS! The Enchanting Romantic Broadway Musical Rodgers and Hammerstein’s

CINDERELLA June 23 thru Aug. 6 Wednesday thru Sunday at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theater

“It’s possible…for a plain country bumpkin and a Prince to join in marriage…” Your dreams can come true when you experience the Broadway Palm’s lavish new production of the timeless and magical Broadway musical CINDERELLA. This enchanting tale of romance features the songs and music of Rodgers and Hammerstein – “It’s Possible”, “In My Own Little Corner” & “Ten Minutes Ago” - made famous by Julie Andrews on Broadway, Leslie Ann Warren on T.V. and pop star Brandy in the recent film version. Re-live the magic – live onstage at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theater.

June 30th, 2011 - July 6th, 2011

The Broadway Palm has spared no expense on this beloved Broadway classic. Production values for this show are off the charts and will take your breath away from the moment the curtain rises. You will be entranced by the brilliant, colorful and imaginative sets created especially for this production by Broadway Set Designer Chris Peters (Associate Set Designer for a Tony Award Winning show - currently on Broadway!) You won’t believe your eyes when you witness the mind boggling special effects designed by lighting wizard Russell Thompson (we are still wondering how they transformed a pumpkin into an amazing golden carriage right in front of us – magician David Copperfield couldn’t have done it better!). We gasped again and again - awestruck by the stunning costumes created by Prather Entertainment Group’s National Costume Designer Jon P. White and Broadway Palm’s very own Costume Goddess – Mary Atkinson. Another stage veteran with extensive Broadway Credits who contributes magic, wit and elegance to this production is Choreographer Dottie Lester-White. Bravo to the Broadway Palm for serving our community with world class culture and professional entertainment. Speaking of amazing – you will be charmed and royally entertained by the performances of this gifted company of actors, singers and dancers – many of them - direct from New York City. In the title role of Cinderella is the beautiful and graceful Adrienne Griffiths and her love interest - the handsome and dashing Robert Legge in the role of Prince Charming. Their chemistry and richly textured and emotionally connected classically trained voices will genuinely pull your heart strings and make you fall in love with love – all over again! Regina Harbour delivers a fascinating and delightful comic turn as Cinderella’s other-worldly Fairy Godmother. The King is portrayed with authority and loveable charm by Mark Kleinman and special kudos to Elizabeth

Brooks who gives Ginger Rogers a run for her money in the role of the Queen – her acting and singing are sublimely delicious and rival the tuxedo cake on the buffet! No one will ever forget audience favorites- the hilarious irascible step sisters and wicked step mother - all three roles brilliantly brought to life by gifted comic actresses Robyn Bydalek, Trisha Hart Ditsworth and Broadway Palm regular - Kathi Osborne. Also - you will likely never forget charming Clinton Sherwood who narrates and repeatedly sings “the Prince is giving a ball” in the role of the Royal Herald. Cinderella is a wow factor of 10!

Do yourself a favor and experience this beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein American musical classic with jaw dropping, eye popping sets, lighting, sound, special effects and costumes, a delightful professional ensemble and principal cast, with lush Orchestrations by J.R. McAlexander and the spirited musical direction ofMaestro Alan Plado – brought together through the inspired artistic direction of M. Seth Reines – AND a Royal Feast at the Broadway Palm’s new buffet and dessert bar – add up to an unforgettable evening of magic and romance and laughter – the perfect summer celebration for your entire family! Bravo Broadway Palm!

Walking Around Lucky

Gamblers as a group may have a number of shortcomings, but being dull or boring sure isn’t one of them. As a matter of fact they tend to be analytical about gaming issues; count on them to state it like they see it, even when it’s a far cry from diplomatic. Take, for example, a guy who was annoyed by another blogger who kept arguing that it didn’t matter what game you selected since luck was the main ingredient in determining whether you were a winner or loser. Exasperated, the person who was correctly trying to make a point regarding long-term odds wrote: “Why not just go to the casino all the time since you never know when you’re walking around lucky?” Although sarcastic, the comment also struck me as accurate and funny. After all, you can drive yourself nuts continuously switching

machines or your timing in hopes of getting the “no brainer” hand. Regardless of all the hocus pocus behavior, you’re still not going to alter or outrun the odds by moving to a different device. Make no mistake about it - playing musical machines can’t hurt either, as long as both the game names and the pay schedule are identical And that brings me to the important issue of; when is it a good idea to visit your favorite Arizona casino. Multiple Points: Most casinos offer multiple points during slow times, like weekdays. Since your points are redeemable for cash or comps, this is an excellent time to play. You will want to take a few minutes to check the pay schedule before depositing money since these may change from time-to-time. Rarely do multiple point promotions make up the deficiency caused by a downgraded pay table. For example, if you’re used to playing 9/6 Jacks or Better (9/6 JOB) and you notice it’s been changed to 8/6 JOB the extra points probably won’t make it a better play then 9/6 JOB without multiple points. To be sure, use the system explained in my book, The Video Poker Edge, to determine the ER (expected return.) after adding the value of the multiple points. Promotion Equity: If two casinos are offering the same video poker game (this includes identical game names and pay schedules) select the casino that’s offering promotional event tickets based on your play. Obviously, the more tickets you have, the greater the odds of winning the prize. I call this concept your equity in the drawing. To further increase your chances select the game with the lowest variance, or risk

High Progressives: It always surprises me when I’m in a casino with progressive games that are identical other than the progressive jackpot and I see players not even checking the amounts. Of course you’ll select the one with the largest progressive. That way when you “get lucky” and catch a royal flush you’ll be paid more. Worried about the $1,200 threshold that triggers a W-2G for you with a matching copy to IRS? Don’t. In Arizona you can fade your wins against your losses on your tax return when you itemize. This is a very friendly state for gamblers since many other states demand a piece of the action, even when you’re an overall loser for the year.

as easily been a hundred dollar salad. My point is there is no way to determine whether or not you’ll get lucky. So the best system to increase your odds is to make sure you have sound reasons for timing your casino visits. That way you’ll have more chances to get lucky without busting your budget. Linda Boyd ,a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for Arizona Player as well as Southern Gaming and Midwest Gaming and Travel. Her book, “The Video Poker Edge”, includes free removable pay schedules and free strategy cards for the most popular games. Look for her story in the 2011 Edition of “American Casino Guide”. The Second Edition of her book is available in both paperback and kindle. Available at amazon.com, bookstores or Square One Publishers www.squareonepublishers.com you can also call Toll Free: 1-877-900-BOOK

Quitting Time: Regardless of the enticements you should never gamble more than you can afford to lose. Most of us have unhappy memories of the $200 turkey courtesy of our friendly casino. When your allotted bankroll is gone then you should leave in spite of feeling lucky. Final Thoughts: Sometimes retrospective thoughts about luck, both good and bad, can do a real number on your psyche. For example, I once had to wait an hour at a casino for my pager to go off for a carry-out order. While waiting I got a royal and many quads. Turned out the buzzer was defective. It could have just

Hot Seat Promotion By T.J. Jorgensen

Recently I have found myself playing a lot of blackjack at our local casinos here in Phoenix. It’s always nice to find a good deal for the player and I made just such a discovery on a recent blackjack expedition to Fort McDowell Casino. They now have what they call a “Hot Seat” giveaway, and here is how it works; When you sit down at a blackjack table at the Fort and present your players card - they sign you in. If you play between the hours of noon and midnight you become eligible for their Hot Seat giveaway. Only players at the table games can participate. At random times throughout the day and night, one players name is picked and then flashed upon a big screen. On the night that I was there, and after only an hour of play - much to my surprise, it was my name that was picked. The pit boss came over to my table and presented me with $25. He told me that I could wager between $5 and $25 on the upcoming hand and if I won they would give me another $25 - However if I was dealt a “Blackjack” they would give me $450! The cards were dealt and my first card was an ace, there was hope I thought to myself. My second card came out and much to my surprise it was a ten giving me “Blackjack” I did the wave in celebration along with the rest of the table. I was then informed that I was now going to be dealt another hand, and if I received another blackjack - I would be rewarded this time with $4000! The cards were dealt and although I had my fingers crossed, I didn’t receive a blackjack and my participation in the hot seat give away promotion had ended – But as I was slipping the $475 in my pocket I thought….what a great promotion! The nice thing about this give away is that only table game players are eligible. At the hours that I play, which is usually late in the evening there are probably less than thirty players at the tables at any given time and only about half are signed in and eligible for the promotion.

Wow! A one in fifteen chance of having your name drawn is great odds. There are no set times when they will pick a name, but they have quite a few drawings, some only 20 minutes apart. The way that I understand it is this - the blackjack jackpot increases each time they play the promotion and the player does not get a blackjack, so the potential rewards can be very lucrative. I liked this promotion so much I went back out to the Fort a couple nights later and I couldn’t believe my name was drawn again. I didn’t get a blackjack this time but I did pocket fifty dollars from the promotion. Anytime you can get the Casino to reward you for playing Blackjack with a program such as this one it is well worth your time. I personally received $525 from the hot seat give away in just two visits and that was a nice chunk of change to add to my winnings. So, if you’re going to play some blackjack on your next night out - consider stopping by the Fort., you just might catch me there. Until next time, I hope you play winning blackjack. T.J. Jorgensen has been a professional blackjack player for over 20 years. He is well known for his live tournament play. Silver Screen Scoop! By Joseph J. Airdo With “Cars 2” having hit theaters last weekend, Pixar Animation’s sights are set on its next two projects – next summer’s “Brave” and the succeeding summer’s “Monster’s University.” Now, there is word that Disney has set a Thanksgiving 2013 release date for yet another one of the studio’s efforts, of which the only known detail thus far is that it encompasses an original, non-sequel concept. Be among the first to get the latest ‘scoop’ from Joseph J. Airdo at Examiner.com

Bet You Didn’t Know! by Stan Robinson

Interview: Buck Brannaman (‘Buck’) By Joseph J. Airdo Suffering a great deal of abuse at the hands of his father while growing up, Buck Brannaman took solace in horses. “The horse is so honest,” Brannaman explains. “If you can find a way to where the horse not only accepts you but really wants to be around you, there are some things within yourself that change. To me, that permeates your entire life and the way you go about things.” Now one of the most well-respected horse trainers in the industry for his method of promoting praise and cooperation rather than fear and punishment, Brannaman is the subject of the new documentary “Buck” distributed by IFC Films. On his Web site, Brannaman admits to having been bit, kicked, bucked off and run over. “I’ve tried every physical means to contain my horse in an effort to keep from getting myself killed,” states Brannaman, who has started more than 12,000 colts since age 12. “I started to realize that things would come much easier for me once I learned why a horse does what he does. This method works well for me because of the kinship that develops between horse and rider.”

Building off of that method, Brannaman shares his difficult childhood with people in order to help them relate to their sometimes wild horses during clinics that he holds throughout the country, including right here in the Valley at Larkyn Memorial Arena at New River Kiwanis Community Park, 48606 N. 17th Avenue. Interview: Writer/Director Andrew Rossi (Page One: Inside the New York Times) By Stan Robinson Writer/Director Andrew Rossi and his production team where given unprecedented access to New York Times newspaper key persons as well as electronic data professionals and social media notables to present this documentary on the merging of print and electronic/social network mediums. Andrew Rossi shares insight on the magnitude of bringing this project to the screen. I asked did he find it or did the film find him… Andrew: “I generated the idea with David Carr. I was interviewing him for a different project about technology and digitization, and had this light bulb go on while thinking that following him and the media desk as a window to everything that was going on with technology would be really fascinating. The crisis with newspapers, which is a theme that several documentary filmmakers were thinking about at the time, David represented this unique angle on it. It took six months of working with the Times, talking about the project, discussions and meetings, to begin production. I would say that definitely I found it (with a chuckle), the idea did not come to me, I had to really ‘roll the boulder up the hill’ (still laughing) to make it happen (still laughing)!” With archival footage as well as hours of film shot during the course of a year, the daunting task of assembling the final documentary loomed ahead for Andrew Rossi and his production team. Interview: Stunt Coordinator Ken Bates (Transformers: Dark of the Moon) By Stan Robinson

The ‘Transformers’ movies presents interaction of humans and the Autobots / Decepticons which means combining live action ‘practical’ stunts and CGI (computer generated images) into believable movement. That daunting task is accomplished by the very capable expertise of Ken Bates with more than 30 years of stunt experience including the Transformers movies, ‘Pearl Harbor’ (2001), ‘Armageddon’ (1998), ‘Die Hard’ (1988), to name a few, and has collaborated with director Michael Bay on films for more than 20 years. Ken was on the other side of the world in Prague in the Czech Republic as he talked

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

about his approach to planning and staging special effects/stunts sequences… I asked is it still boarded out as in live action sequences? Ken: “We used to do story boards, now we start with the script which is never the movie we actually shot! If you read ‘The Rock’ script, or the first draft of ‘Bad Boys’ you can kind of see that things change a lot. They’re turned upside down and a lot of what I do is inspired from Jerry Bruckheimer, and Jerry is really the guy who brought me into story telling, and building moments, and character moments. So basically when we did ‘Bad Boys’ back in 94’ and Michael’s (Bay) first movie, we were like 22 million all in and it was a very successful film. As we get into these films (Transformers movies) we have these scripts that are a foundation, kind of like ‘beat sheets’ of what we’re going to do, and you know from being a ‘First’ (Assistant Director), you have to be prepared to go to battle every day, because every day is a hard day. I’d have to say it’s harder than shooting television because you have to be prepared to go big at any time. Talking to Michael (Bay), Scott Farrar (Visual Effects Supervisor), John Frazier (Special Effects Supervisor), and stunts, it’s a joint venture of all of those departments!” Read more from Stan Robinson’s interview with Stunt Coordinator Ken Bates exclusively online at ScreenScene.org and Examiner.com.

Reviewers’ Roundup! The following quotes were pulled from reviews written by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s Film Section contributors to present readers with a wider perspective about this weekend’s new releases. Read Joseph J. Airdo, Randy Montgomery and Stan Robinson’s full reviews exclusively online at Examiner.com, AZWeeklyMagazine.com and ScreenScene.org, respectively.

‘Buck’ Promoting praise and cooperation rather than fear and punishment, Buck Brannaman becomes one of the most well respected horse trainers in the industry. Playing exclusively at UltraStar UltraLuxe Scottsdale Pavilions, Harkins Superstition Springs 25 and AMC Ahwatukee 24. (PG – 88 minutes) Joseph: “Much like the man who is its subject, the new documentary ‘Buck’ teaches compassion – not only to horses but to each and every living creature on this planet, including humans. And while director Cindy Meehl’s subject may be so small that even 88 minutes feels like a bit of a stretch, ‘Buck’ – both the movie and the man – encourages you to not only be a better person but to also use your past in the creation of a better future for all.” Grade: C

‘First Dog’ A foster boy (John-Paul Howard) is befriended by a lost dog who turns out to belong to the President of the United States. The boy decides to run away from the foster home to return the canine to the White House. Playing exclusively at Harkins Superstition Springs 25. (NR – 90 minutes) Joseph: “Writer/director Bryan Michael Stoller’s ‘First Dog’ beckons back to a time in which family flicks were simple yet transcendent in their storytelling. A decent, old-fashioned alternative to the summer’s big-budget, visual effect-laden extravaganzas, ‘First Dog’ charms as much as it entertains. Despite being a little over-the-top in its sense

of adventure and using convenient naivety to advance its plot, the movie carries enough genuinely virtuous depth to warrant a watch.” Grade: C

‘Hobo with a Shotgun’ A homeless vigilante (Rutger Hauer) blows away crooked cops, pedophile Santas and other scumbags with his trusty pump-action shotgun. Based on the fake trailer for a movie of the same title featured in “Grindhouse.” Playing exclusively at The Royale. (NR – 86 minutes) Joseph: “Writer/director Jason Eisener’s ‘Hobo with a Shotgun’ single-handedly desensitizes viewers to extreme gore and intense violence. That very well may be the greatest praise possible for a movie that is essentially an exploitation thriller ripped right out of the 70s. Best of all, Eisener refuses to hold anything back, creating more carnage than can even be imagined by a criminally insane person all while exercising a tongue-in-cheek sincerity to retain astounding authenticity.” Grade: B

‘Page One: Inside the New York Times’

robber, simply as a hobby. In German with English subtitles. Playing exclusively at the Film Bar in downtown Phoenix, AZ

Unprecedented access to the New York Times newsroom yields a complex view of the transformation of a media landscape fraught with both peril and opportunity. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 88 minutes)

Stan: “Austrian writer/director Benjamin Heisenberg provides a well paced action film with an equal balance of an engaging plot, provides a ‘thinking man’s movie’ cloaked in the clandestine proverbial ‘chase film’. The fact it’s based on a true story makes it that much more compelling. And by all means, don’t let the subtitled aspect deter you from experiencing ‘The Robber’. Grade: B

Randy: “A unique look at the inner workings of one of the world’s most respected print publications. Done with humor, this documentary never slows done and never loses the viewer’s interest. The change is the way social media has changed the way we gather news adds to the story. Having worked in radio, print and social media for a decade and a half, the content is all too familiar. One of the summer’s must-see films for those wanting more than superheroes and R-rated comedies.” Grade: A Stan: “For those of us who work in news (my career started with NBC News-TV and went on to film production 30 years ago) and utilizing modern advances throughout the decades as the mediums progressed and merged, ‘Page One’ is a powerful piece of filmmaking. The content compiled into 90 minutes is monumental and so much more than just an inside look at a newspaper and the theme of surviving emerging technologies, the film is a ‘wake up’ parallax view of the future for information/news retrieval and instant dissemination to the masses.” Grade: B+

‘Queen to Play’ A middle-aged chambermaid’s (Sandrine Bonnaire) newfound obsession with the game of chess leads her to seek the tutelage of a reclusive American expat (Kevin Kline), transforming both of their ho-hum lives in the process. In French with English subtitles. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (NR – 101 minutes) Joseph: “Utilizing nothing but brilliant moves, writer/director Caroline Bottaro forces a checkmate with her new drama ‘Queen to Play.’ The remarkably passionate motion picture, based on Bertina Henrichs’s novel, is a beautifully rich character study accented by outstanding performances and a graceful execution that encourages the viewer – regardless of their familiarity with the game of chess – to seek the same happiness and intimacy that is achieved by the film’s main character. ” Grade: B

‘The Robber’ The true story of Johann Rettenberger (Andreas Lust), a champion marathon athlete who developed a double life as a serial bank

Stan: “Grounded in humanity and life, the overall theme of Buck Brannaman’s story reminds us all that understanding, appreciation, and respect for the wonders of life, is the basic means we all possess for communicating. Director Cindy Meehl’s slow and deliberate pacing of ‘Buck’ provides the proverbial ‘food for thought’ as the story unfolds both cinematically and visually.” Grade: C+

‘Circo’ A documentary about a hardscrabble traveling Mexican circus troupe that has lived and performed on the road since the 19th Century, but will their art survive into the 21st? Playing exclusively at the Film Bar in downtown Phoenix, AZ (75 minutes)

‘Larry Crowne’ After losing his job, a middle-aged man (Tom Hanks) reinvents himself by going back to college. Also starring Julia Roberts. (PG-13 – 99 minutes)

‘Monte Carlo’ Selena Gomez, Leighton Meester and Katie Cassidy play a trio of young women who, while vacationing in Paris, find themselves whisked away to the titular city after one of them is mistaken for a British heiress. (PG – 109 minutes) ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ The Autobots learn of a Cybertronian spacecraft hidden on the Moon, and race against the Decepticons to reach it and learn its secrets, which could turn the tide in the Transformers’ final battle. (PG-13 - 157 minutes)

Viewers who tuned in to PBS’ “An American Family” in early 1973 bore witness to a piece of television history: the first “reality” series that featured TV’s first gay character as well as a marriage on the rocks. Now, nearly 40 years later, PBS revisits the Loud family, a “neither average nor typical” middle-class clan in Santa Barbara, Calif., in “An American Family: Anniversary Edition,” a two-hour condensation of

the original 12-part, 12-hour series, airing Thursday, July 7. The series, which had The Loud family sequels in 1983 and 4.5” x 2.375” ad 2001, plus HBO’s recent docudrama “Cinema Verite,” followed the Louds through their day-to-day lives in 1971, focusing on patriarch Bill, a traveling businessman; stay-at-home mom Pat; and their teenage children, Delilah, Grant, Michele, Kevin and Lance. Over 9” xviewers 1” ad the course of the 12 episodes, were treated to the mundane, the not so mundane.

If you’re on ‘Who Wants4.5” to Bexa 2.375” Millionaire,’ ad you get the question wrong, and you just lose the money and walk off the set. “If you’re on our show, and you get just one question wrong, you’re on top of the wing of an airplane, and you’re flown off the set.9” It’s xscary, and 1” ad it’s a pretty spectacular way to leave a game show.”

Tommy Hilfiger on dressing for the Fourth

“Last Chance Harvey” (2008): While he doesn’t lose his familiar traits, Hoffman adds a serenity that makes watching him – as he plays a man attending his daughter’s wedding – a true pleasure. “Rain Man” (1988): Oscar No. 2 was given to Hoffman as 4.5” an autistic savant who meets his car huckster brother (Tom Cruise).

Tommy Hilfiger

“Lenny” (1974): Hoffman perfectly captures the humor and persona of racy comic Lenny Bruce. “The Graduate” (1967): It wasn’t his first movie, but the Mike Nichols-directed cultural touchstone about innocent Benjamin Braddock and seductive Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft) certainly was the first film Hoffman attracted attention for. And he still does.

July Fourth is such a special holiday that instead of actors and costume designers explaining how to assemble certain looks, we turned to a quintessentially American designer, Tommy Hilfiger, to advise on how to dress well for the occasion. First, though, he acknowledges how much he likes the looks of two of the “American Idol” judges: the rocker elan of Steven Tyler and the eclectic glamour of Jennifer Lopez, who can be seen this week in “The Back-Up Plan” on 4.5” x 2.375” ad Showtime. Hilfiger began with trendier pieces before creating the look for which he’s famed. “I took all of the preppy clothes and preppy ideas I had grown up with and decided to reinvent the look,” he says. “I made it detailed and oversized and later slimmed it down a little bit. I always loved red, white and blue, in any case.” 9” x 1” ad

Ryan Stout loves to explore morally repugnant subject matter with smart and sterile objectivity. His exaggerated honesty, delightful insincerity, and cute self-righteousness sell his wickedly witty material. No matter what the topic, this suit clad comic appeals to everyone’s sense of logic. And to assure his brand of “offensive humor” stays on an intellectual level, he tries to keep swear words out of his act. Oh, he’ll talk about rape and abortion, but it won’t be filthy.

“I can’t even find someone for a platonic relationship, much less the kind where someone wants to see me naked.” Gilbert Gottfried

“I had to stop drinking, cause I got tired of waking up in my car driving 90.” Richard Pryor

“After you’ve dated someone, it should be legal to stamp them with what’s wrong with them so the next person doesn’t have to start from scratch.” Rita Rudner

“The easiest job in the world has to be coroner. Surgery on dead people. What’s the worst thing that could happen?” Dennis Miller

Natasha Leggero With Special Guests Ryan Stout & Michael Yo June 30th – July 2nd Natasha currently stars in Comedy Central’s new hit animated series Ugly Americans as well as Nick Swardson’s Pretend Time. She played various pants-less deviants on Reno 911 and has starred in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Samantha Who?, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, The Life and Times of Tim, Worstweek, Til Death, and The Sarah Silverman Program. She is an accomplished stand-up with appearances on The Tonight Show w/ Jay Leno, The Late Late Show w/ Craig Ferguson, Last Call w/ Carson Daly and a Comedy Central special which premiered in March 2011. Her record “Coke Money” has been in the top 10 on itunes since its debut on Comedy Central Records in March 2011. Natasha tours the country headlining packed comedy clubs across the US with her own brand of sophisticated writing, physicality and glamour. Michael Yo, the self-proclaimed “HalfBlack Brother with a Korean Mother” AKA, was born and raised in Houston and got his radio start in Austin at the popular central-Texas station, 96.7, more than 10 years ago. Michael made his debut on E! in 2008 as a celebrity correspondent for E! News. He can also often be seen being belittled by Chelsea Handler as a round table panelist on Chelsea Lately. Michael has been perfecting his stand up comedy routine for a long time now, since April 7th of 2011, and has appeared at numerous comedy clubs across the country including The Improv,Comedy Store, Palms Hotel, Playboy Club.

Christopher Titus July 8th – 10th His mother, a manic-depressive schizophrenic, was in and out of mental institutions throughout his childhood. She killed her third husband and later killed herself. His father was an alcoholic who was fairly brutal to him his whole life. His wife of fifteen years forged checks, cleaned out his bank accounts, and cheated on him with two men. While most people would want to suck on a bullet just reading the above, Titus turned it into comedy. Is it possible that Christopher Titus is the greatest working comic of our time? Employing what he’s labeled “hard funny,” Christopher Titus has released three ninety-minute albums in as many years. That’s 270 minutes of material when most comics do the same act for years. He has three one-hour comedy specials currently running on Comedy Central. After years of experimentation with dark and personal storytelling, he debuted his one-man show “Norman Rockwell is Bleeding” at the Hudson Theater in Los Angeles. It was from this performance that the dark comedy, “Titus,” was born on Fox. The show earned Titus a Writer’s Guild nomination as well as an Emmy nomination, and Newsday called him “TV’s most original voice since Seinfeld.”

WITH THIS ADVERTISMENT (EQUAL OR LESSER VALUE - LUNCH OR DINNER)

‘Hey, y’all, happy birthday, America’

Admit it, America, you want her to give you a hug. She is like the mother you never had. If George Washington was a founding father, Paula Deen is a feeding mother. That’s right, we are proud to say that she is America’s cook. It’s safe to say that if she were to bake us an apple pie while whistling a Beach Boys tune in nothing but a red, white and blue apron, she couldn’t be any more American. That’s why the Food Network has chosen to give all of us “Paula Deen’s July 4th Summer-thon!” on, you guessed it, Monday. It’s six straight hours of everything Paula and her family do to create summer fun with seasonal recipes. If she could deep-fry a fireworks display, she probably would. But just how much do you really know about this woman who keeps deep-frying mac and cheese?

BEER!

Much is made of the culture of beer. As Arizona moves towards a better beer culture, let’s look at some of the best ways to enjoy beer. Of course, you can drink a beer from the bottle. A beer with your friends on the patio does not automatically become a better beer just because it is served in a nice stemmed glass. But once you do serve beer in a glass you get a chance to enjoy its color, head and liveliness. The full aroma is not released until it is poured, and this certainly changes the experience of tasting.

Find the right glass for the type of beer.

40

June 30th, 2011 - July 6th, 2011

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” The aroma is best if the rim is narrow at the top. It is better to drink beer with a powerful aroma from glasses which have a wider rim at the top to ‘air out’ some of the aroma. Since only the best is good enough then make sure that the glass is completely clean. Left over detergents, grease, dust or scratched glasses will kill the head and liveliness of the nectar. Serve the beer at the temperature recommended by the master brewer or the temperature you prefer yourself. Pale beer is typically served colder than dark and aromatic beer. Generally, the serving temperature should not be too low. The lower the temperature, the less the aroma intensity. Good beer should be

enjoyed with all of your senses. Pouring it is pure enjoyment for the

ear, a wonderful sight for the eye Continued on page 44...

By King James Swann Hello again everyone, I hope you enjoyed last week’s article about Ballast Point Brewing Co. Sculpin IPA as much as I enjoyed drinking it! This week I shall turn my attention to Gulden Draak, a true dark Belgian triple brewed by Brouwerij Van Steenberge. The oldest known documentation concerning this brewery places its creation in 1784 when it was called Brouwerij De Peer, though many believe its existence dates back many years prior. Beginning as a humble farm brewing for its own ploughmen, beer gradually became a major focus as demand from locals & neighboring villages began to grow. As an interesting note, between W.W.1 and W.W.2 they produced Lemonade as a means of profit & survival in tough times. Last year the brewery produced about 35,000 barrels of beer and is continuing to grow.

Gulden Draak Beer Review

The name Gulden Draak translates into “Golden Dragon”and this beer is quite a master piece to behold! The Golden Dragon on the labelof this striking white bottle looks like an ancient Viking war ship. Production of this Belgian triple began sometime after 1978 when Brouwerij Van Steenberge acquired a special yeast strain from the Augustiner Monks in Gent, Belgium. Very dark for a Belgian triple, it’s ABV. sits firmly at 10.5%. Gulden Draak’s IBUs seem to be a carefully guarded secret, but my guess puts it in the neighborhood of 25-30, top of the range considering style standards. At first taste, a symphony of malt textures and flavors abound. This is a very complex beer from start to finish. Everything from sweet molasses and ripe dark fruit to toffee & brown sugar touch your taste buds.Hop character provides a touch of balance and the ripe fruit flavors really begin to emerge as the beer warms. Most certainly a beer for your cellar, it will only get better with age.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeverages.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Considered by many as the perfect after dinner brew, great food pairings include dark chocolate fondue, tiramisu or bread pudding. My perfect pairing mates it with a double espresso& a warm chocolate chip scone. Gulden Draak has taken medals in beer competitions in Europe as well as in the United States and scores an almost perfect 99 on RateBeer.com for overall quality, drinkability and style. I was fortunate enough to meet the brewery’s owner at Flanny’s Bar& Grill in Tempe Az. last week and was truly taken with his passion for brewing. A true artist! As always feel free to contact me @ kingjamesswann@gmail.com with any questions or comments. Until next week, Cheers!

and a cool feeling for the hand, as well as an adventure for your nose and mouth. Pour How the beer is poured determines the shape of the head and therefore the appearance. should slide down the side of the glass. Germans, Czechs and Dutch people prefer a lot of foam – the English not so much. In America, we tend to think that foam is bad. This is not the case. Foam is an important part of the enjoyment of beer as it allows the carbonation to release, but also helps retain the aroma and flavor of the beer. As a guideline the head should be about an inch or two high, depending on Continued on page 45...

the style of beer. Do not fill the glass too much so as to leave room for the aroma to gather at the top. Look While we do not necessarily eat and drink with our eyes, they are an important part of the process. They give us the first impression of the beer. Is the color like straw, brown or black like coffee? What color is the foam? Hold the glass up to the light and watch the color, clarity, foam and liveliness. We taste with our noses as well. Various aromas are experienced through the nose and the mouth. Both are needed to feel the beer. Swirl Swirl the beer in the glass in order to release the aromas. This also gives you the opportunity to better appraise the foam. Sniff Hold the beer up to your nose and sniff. Is the aroma like hops and flowers, spices, nuts, fruit or berries? Do you recognize the aroma of apple, plum or lemon? If you have trouble getting all of the aromas, consider pinching one nostril shut and using the other one to really sniff the beer.

taste. Do you recognize the aromas from the sniff or do you sense other aromas such as grain, malt, nuts or fruit and berries? The beer will warm up in your mouth and release other aromas as well as allowing the carbon dioxide to evaporate giving yet another experience. The tongue feels the sourness, sweetness and bitterness. The sweetness is captured at the tip of the tongue, whereas the bitterness, which is very important, is captured in the back. Therefore, when you taste beer you should always swallow – do not spit it out. Cheers Beer is like love – it is best if you share it with someone else. Beer is a social drink and therefore it always tastes better in pleasant surroundings in good company. Now that you have some idea of how to best enjoy beer, go ahead and try this the next few times you enjoy a beer. Consider keeping a record of your beer experiences so you remember which beers you like, as well as which aromas and tastes contribute to that beer. That way you can find comparable beers more easily.

Happy hour is great for the food and drink specials. I happen to be a sushi fan and Pearl Sushi Lounge and Bomber Bar is great for a change of pace! Happy hour just happens to be all day every day? Can’t beat that, and I am about it! The variety is delicious for $6 each roll; can’t forget about their $3 Svedka MANtinis. Tuna Tuesdays has amazing deals and if you come dressed in each week’s theme you can receive free sake refills all night! 4252 N. Drinkwater Blvd. Scottsdale, AZ 85251

Crave Café and Lounge is small but don’t let the size fool you; you won’t be disappointed! Mediterranean and Greek style food is more my style! Half off over 20 menu items during their daily 4-9 happy hour and $10 wine bottles! Every time I go there it is a little piece of heaven in my mouth .They even have hookah for you to enjoy with your lunch if that’s your thing. 505 S. Mill Ave. Tempe, AZ 85282

The Night Owl Swimsuits & Sneakers at the W Hotel Summa, summa, summa tiiime… It’s time to sit back and unwind. Well it’s definitely summertime in the desert and at times, it’s not so easy to sit back and relax like Will Smith does in this unofficial summertime anthem. It’s just so ridiculously hot that you sometimes avoid going out in the daytime unless it’s to a pool. July 4th is this weekend, which means it’s the perfect time for such an activity. Throw in some BBQ, icy beverages, tunes, and fireworks and you have the ideal setting for an Independence Day celebration. I’m one to feed off of other people’s energies so being around individuals also looking to have a great time makes most situations even better. This Sunday, join like-minded Americans at the W hotel in Scottsdale to celebrate our nation’s birthday. Relax by the pool and listen to the live DJ, eat delicious BBQ, and watch the Swimsuit and Sneakers fashion show by Vitamin A swimwear to keep your mind off the 115 degree weather. Later in the day, pop/acoustic musician, Kelly James, will perform while the sun sets at 7. Then watch, with childlike amazement, as the W shoots fireworks up into the sky for your annual dose of pyrotechnics. Sunday, July 3rd, doors open @ 12:00 pm. LOCAL BOXING STAR JESUS “EL MARTILLO” GONZALES TO FIGHT FOR THE TITLE IN HOMETOWN AZ ESPN Friday Night Fights Live at US Airways Center To Showcase Hometown Hero in Crucial Title Fight Match-Up One of the most significant boxing matchups in over a decade is set to take place in Phoenix July 8, 2011 at US Airways Center. Current IBF North American Super Middleweight Champion Jesus “El Martillo” Gonzales (26-1) will compete for the NABF Super Middleweight Championship against Henry “Sugar Poo” Buchanan (20-2). This is a crucial fight, as the winner will move forward to compete for a World Title.

56

It is only fitting that a fight which signals Gonzales’ remarkable comeback will take place in his hometown of Phoenix. Gonzales rose to boxing fame with a decorated amateur career including wins June 30th, 2011 - July 6th, 2011

over 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist and current WBA World Super Middleweight Champion Andre Ward, WBO Light Middleweight Champion Alfredo Angulo, IBA Intercontinental Light Middleweight champion Sechew Powell, and an astonishing four wins over WBC Welterweight Champion Andre Berto. In 2005, he suffered a tragic loss, and poor contractual agreements afterwards stilted his career. Gonzales was eventually forced to become a high school security guard to make ends meet. By chance, Fan Base Promotions discovered Gonzales while visiting Phoenix to train a prized Canadian fighter. Since then, Gonzales has returned with fervor, becoming the IBF North American Super Middleweight Champion at just 26 years old. He has been touted as the next Oscar de la Hoya, and holds two of the fastest knockouts in history. Gonzales will face Buchanan at US Airways Center in Phoenix July 8, 2011 at 6:00 pm. This event is being sponsored by ESPN and Fan Base Promotions, and will be broadcast on ESPN. The fight will feature such amenities as music, drinks and concessions. Come out to support a hometown hero and witness this paramount fight live!

SOCIAL FINANCE Nooo, this is not a column on internet dating. It is, however a type of matchmaking. Social Finance is a practice of bringing together people to utilize the tools of finance and social networking. Social Finance is a Marketplace for matching borrowers and lenders without leaving your computer. Going are the days of walking into your local bank. This finance venue has proven its mainstream chops when an episode of The Simpsons Titled “Loan-A-Lisa”, explored the basic concepts. Consistent with all progress, there are pros and cons to everything. I like the alternatives the internet offers yet, I like walking into my local branch where everyone knows my name. The request for more downto-earth and sustainable ways of dealing with money and finance has surfaced to international attention. Particularly in Europe, social banks were among the most successful financial institutions during the crisis years, with annual growth rates of up to 30%, doubling their assets from 2007 to 2010. In recent years, social banks have forged influential global networks, which pursue the ambitious strategy of reaching out to 1 billion people by 2020. Increasing numbers of people are improving their financial literacy and are taking a growingly critical stance towards the mainstream international banking and finance sector as we knew it before the crisis. Knowledge is power. I SAY it is time for a Plan B, and increasingly for some, that means peer-to-peer lending. Here’s what you need to know; Peer-to-Peer Lending, which is also called Social Lending or Social Finance, is done online. There are several sites where you can find and lend money.

THE BIG RISK WITH P2P IS THE UNSECURED NATURE OF THE LOANS. Some groups have now combined the P2P model with secured asset lending. If you are considering diversifying your investments I‘d recommend the security.

“Rush’s Time Machine Tour Spectacular” Rush’s Time Machine tour rolled through Phoenix recently. The show is everything you expect from Rush: astounding musicianship, impeccable sound, blazing drum solos, dazzling lights and cutting-edge effects. Yet this is a tour built not on a new album, but on a celebration of their most successful release, Moving Pictures. The set list spanned almost 40 years of diverse hits and deeper cuts but spent 40 minutes on their 1981 quadruple-platinum work playing it from start to finish. In addition, a satisfying selection of Rush must-haves surrounded two new songs recorded prior to the tour, Brought Up to Believe and Caravan. Exciting, complex and at times moody, the pieces showcase the band’s maturity blended carefully with their youthful exuberance and will be included on their upcoming work, Clockwork Angels. Each member is performing at peak levels

led by Geddy Lee singing as strong and clean as ever and working the bass like a wizard. Alex Lifeson’s persistent riff-laden guitar work is offset by the facial expressions of a joyful youth. And, of course, Neil Peart: the reason for half of the arena to be air-drumming in unison. His drum solo alone reveals the wide-scoped nature of the band’s stone-faced lyricist with sweeping rudiments, electronic trance beats and big band swing strung together like an epic novel. Peart additionally has a new print release with his fifth book, Far and Away: A Prize Every Time, a compilation of entries from his web site. Inspired by a movement called Slow Blogging, Peart carefully crafts each entry like a short story. They are reflective, at times emotional and enhanced with personal snapshots from his miles of motorcycle touring. With little end in sight, we’re reminded that these Canadian legends show no signs of slowing with age and will surely be back many times for those that missed this memorable event.
