“A social painting studio like Art of Merlot is ideal for anyone who has always wanted to try their hand at painting but doesn’t know how to start. It’s also a great new teambuilding activity for businesses. We strive to create a fun, social, creative, and relaxed environment.” said owner Audra Simpson. Adults over 21 years of age are welcome to bring a bottle of wine to the BYOB classes (only). Everyone can bring snacks and appetizers. Kim H. Chandler, AZ 6/28/2011 “I have to say I didn’t know what to expect but this was such a fun, rewarding experience. I am not the most artistic person and going into this, I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into. However, the art instruction from the teacher was step by step and very thorough. My painting actually turned out just like the original which for me I thought would be impossible. My two girls were shocked that I was able to paint what I did so I have to say I was very happy with the turnout. It was also a great time, we went with some

close friends and discovered a very friendly atmosphere, we even enjoyed a glass of wine with our art. I would definitely go again and highly recommend!” For more information, contact: Audra Simpson, owner Art of Merlot 7201 Main Street Scottsdale, AZ 85251 480-945-1108 www.artofmerlot.com

Blackjack Etiquette, by definition, is an unwritten code of common courtesies for Blackjack players. Gamblers, as a general rule, are extremely superstitious, and if there is a sudden change in their luck for the worst, any new element will get the blame.

America

There are no mathematical statistics to back up any players’ claims that a certain event will change the flow of cards from good to bad. However, if you want to avoid being blamed for other players’ bad luck, follow these simple practices, and you will always be a welcome addition to any blackjack game.

1. Ask Permission. When approaching a game already in progress, ask the other players seated at the table if they mind if you join. This is the polite way to enter a game. That way, if the cards turn for the worse, the other players can only blame themselves. If players have been winning prior to your arrival, and you fail to ask permission, be ready for some nasty glares, and evil looks, if the cards turn bad. The other players may not say anything, but trust me they are not thinking happy thoughts about you. If you sit down, and the very first hand the dealer receives blackjack, I would hate to be you. With the addition of a new player midshoe, the others players will blame you, if the flow of cards changes for the worse. 2. Don’t split 10s without asking. There are very few things that you can do as a blackjack player that will draw such an adverse reaction from the other players at the table, as splitting a pair of 10s. If you feel the need to do so, ask the other players if they mind. That way, if you get their consent, and it does cause them to lose, at least they all won’t join together and form a lynch mob on your behalf. If you have a strong desire to split a winning hand of 20, you might want to wait until you are the only player at the table. I personally am of the opinion that it is your money, play however you want. However, the majority of blackjack players don’t share my view.

wheelchair bound, and required oxygen. A new player was guilty of one of the most rude and most-inconsiderate acts I have ever witnessed in some 30 years of playing. He sat down beside the elderly gentleman and lights up a cigarette. It’s obvious that the man requires pure oxygen to sustain life, and this idiot is blowing smoke in his face. I thought the man was going to die right there. Please, use some common sense. 4. Tip the Dealer. The Blackjack dealers are paid minimum hourly wage, so the majority of their income is from tips. If you have a winning session, take care of the dealer. They will be much friendlier the next time you see them. You can also place a small bet next to yours for the dealer, many times the dealer will wait to try to convince you what the correct play might be, hit or stay – some dealers will even ask, “are you sure you want to hit that?” hoping the player would make the right choice- after all they have a stake in the final outcome, and will almost always “thank you” for the bet – win or lose. 5. Playing 2 Hands. If there is a spot open next to your seat, and you decide to play two hands, it is always polite to ask the other players if they mind. Again, this is a good idea in case the dealer turns up a blackjack, after you add the additional hand. If you play two hands, continue playing two until the end of the shoe. If you go back and forth between one and two, you will be blamed for changing the cards if they turn ugly. If you adhere to these common courtesies when you play blackjack, it will create a friendly atmosphere at your table, and that always makes the game more enjoyable. Until next time, I hope you play winning Blackjack.

3. Don’t be rude. If you have the desire to smoke at the table, at least ask the other players if they mind. I was playing once with a delightful elderly gentleman, who was

Man in the Machine

Every now and then I like to go over the latest scuttlebutt regarding truth versus fiction as it relates to video poker. With all the latest technology there’s always plenty of fodder for the rumor mill. There’s no harm done by carrying lucky charms or wearing your winning hat, many gamblers do, even if they won’t admit it. However, if you allow these superstitions to dictate playing choices or strategy on video poker (or any other game requiring skill) you’ll be wasting money in the long run. The most mind-boggling tale was relayed several years ago when a lady in Vegas jokingly said there was a tiny man in the machine that dealt the cards. I wasn’t there but she swore the other person believed her. You may think it’s impossible for anyone to be so gullible, but over the years I’ve heard some strange and twisted tales. Truth or Myth: Here are statements I’ve personally heard (some frequently) along with whether or not they’re accurate. They’re not as far-fetched as the “man in the machine” belief but any incorrect assumptions can interfere with playing smart. Time of Day Matters: Myth: This is something I hear all the time. “I notice more four of a kinds hit late at night” or similar comments are just plain foolish, with one possible exception. If the casino has server-based technology, some do, then it’s possible to change the game or pay schedule from a remote location off the gaming floor. The time of the day might matter if management decides to make changes during peak playing times, like on weekends and during celebratory holidays, like New Year’s Eve. If you are wondering just ask management if they have serverbased devices. Machines Are Paying Less: Myth: The probability of being dealt any winning hand remains the same given a deck of 52 virtual cards. For example, there are 2,598,960 possible dealt hands and you will be dealt trips (three of a kind) one in 48 hands. In Arizona casinos we have RNG’s (random number generators) inside every device. the 52 virtual cards has an equal chance of being dealt or drawn. If you are being paid less - check the pay schedule to see if it has been downgraded. If not, it’s just a streak of bad luck. Some Machines Are Remotely Controlled: Truth: As mentioned before, this technology, called server-based, exists and is already in place in Las Vegas at the City Center and elsewhere. Look for more of these devices in the future especially in new casinos. (It’s cheaper to wire before the carpeting is installed.) This, however, is not a bad thing and may be good for players. That’s because you’ll get customized offers based on your play right at the machine instead of needing to go to a kiosk. Just make sure you carefully check both the game name and pay schedule before inserting money. Same People Win Promotions: Partly True: The number of tickets you earn is based on your aggregate (total) coin-in; the more you play the better your chances of winning. Those who are frequent players will win more often; I consider this fair. Don’t Play With a Slot Card: Myth: Hard to believe that some people still believe that your slot club card has any effect on the game. Use your card to earn comps, cash and promo entries unless the casino excludes the game you’re playing. There are a few casinos in Nevada that don’t award points for video poker because the odds are better if you select a good game. If a casino refuses to give you points then you should remove your card; fortunately this policy has not come to Arizona casinos. Final Thoughts: As the adage goes, if it sounds too improbable to be true, then it probably isn’t. Statements that defy logic, like a machine deals more of one rank than another make no sense unless you think the casino has somehow rigged their devices. If you really believe the machines are gaffed then you shouldn’t even be playing there. Keep in mind the casino can legally change pay schedules or slot chips so there is no reason to take the risk of cheating. For those who are still conversing with the “man in the machine”, it’s time to stop! Linda Boyd ,a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for Arizona Player as well as Southern Gaming and Midwest Gaming and Travel. Her book, “The Video Poker Edge”, includes free removable pay schedules and free strategy cards for the most popular games. Look for her story in the 2011 Edition of “American Casino Guide”. The Second Edition of her book is available in both paperback and kindle. Silver Screen Scoop! By Joseph J. Airdo

Marvel Studios has locked down a July 26, 2013, release date for “Thor 2,” less than three months after “Iron Man 3’s” May 3 bow. “Captain America: The First Avenger,” of course, is set to open on July 29 of this year while all three superheroes will team up May 4, 2012, for “The Avengers.” Be among the first to get the latest ‘scoop’ from Joseph J. Airdo at Examiner.com

Interview: Director Chris Weitz (‘A Better Life’) By Stan Robinson

Director Chris Weitz, with his previous movies of ‘Ants’ (1998) and ‘The Golden Compass’ (2007) among my favorites, brings humanity back into the equation of the highly political and certainly controversial topic of immigration with a

compelling story of a gardener (Demian Bichir) in East L.A. who struggles to keep his son (Jose Julian) away from gangs and immigration agents while trying to give his son the opportunities he never had. As production persons in the industry, we work on various film projects. On some, we’re drawn to a project, while others find us. Chris tells me… “It found me! Actually they had been trying to make this film for twenty years! It’s based on an incident that happened to a friend of one of the producers. About three years ago a friend brought me this script that Eric Eason had written who’s an amazing writer, and its really the best thing I had read the whole time I’d been working in movies. Aside from that, I have Mexican family heritage, my grandmother came to the States when she was 17, and I grew up not speaking Spanish, so it was an opportunity to get back into that aspect of the culture, to start learning Spanish because I knew we were going to make the movie with a bilingual crew! And as well, ‘A Better Life’

Bet You Didn’t Know!

was a chance to get back to making films without green screen and without CGI, and a film with real emotional impact!” Read more from Stan Robinson’s interview with Writer/Director Chris Weitz exclusively online at ScreenScene.org and Examiner.com.

Reviewers’ Roundup! The following quotes were pulled from reviews written by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s Film Section contributors to present readers with a wider perspective about this weekend’s new releases. Read Joseph J. Airdo, Randy Montgomery and Stan Robinson’s full reviews exclusively online at Examiner.com, AZWeeklyMagazine.com and ScreenScene.org, respectively.

‘A Better Life’ A gardener (Demian Bichir) in East L.A. struggles to keep his son (Jose Julian) away from gangs and immigration agents while trying to give his son the opportunities he never had. (PG-13 – 98 minutes) Joseph: “‘A Better Life’ could not have been a better movie. The most affecting motion picture of the year, ‘A Better Life’ tackles the illegal immigration issue with intimacy and the effect can be felt from wherever one stands on said issue. Director Chris Weitz tells a survival story that is as riveting as it is real, facilitating a white-knuckled walk in fellow human being’s tragically tattered shoes.” Grade: A

by Stan Robinson

Stan: “With the immigration issue taking center stage in the news politically, director Chris Weitz rekindles the basic universal elements of humanity and compassion, opening our hearts with intimate sensitivity to the characters in the film, reminding us all of our deepest desires, as we strive for ‘A Better Life’… ” Grade: B+

In Steven Spielberg’s movie ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ (1977), the droid character R2-D2 from all six ‘Star Wars’ movies, can be seen hanging from the bottom of the ship!

‘Octubre’ A friendless moneylender (Bruno Odar) hires a lonely neighbor (Gabriela Velasquez) to help him take care of the baby he found abandoned at his house. In Spanish with English subtitles. Playing

Joseph: “Dark comedy has never been more dry than in ‘Octubre.’ Not a whole lot happens in the Peruvian dramedy from writing/directing brothers Daniel and Diego Vega Vidal and claiming that it warms the cockles of your heart may be a bit of a stretch. However, there is something miraculous in the way that ‘Octubre’ evokes emotion through such a deadpan approach.” Grade: B Soundbite Spotlight: Katie Cazorla (‘Nail Files’) By Joseph J. Airdo The following soundbite was pulled from an interview with Katie Cazorla, star of TV Guide Network’s new reality series “Nail Files” and entrepreneur behind The Painted Nail salon – a celebrity hotspot in LA. “Celebrities didn’t have to sign a release. Some didn’t want to be on camera. Melina Kanakaredes from ‘CSI: New York’ was like, ‘I’m in the middle of filming and I don’t want to sign a release.’ Same with Teri Hatcher. She’s very private and I respect that. We have to respect the privacy of that clientele. It’s my real store and I don’t want to ruin that relationship. “But some clients didn’t care. Like Vanessa Hudgens. All I could think of was, ‘I bleeping love you right now!’ She is the nicest person I have ever met in my life. She is so adorable. Hilary Duff is another one who is just so cute and fun. One day, LeVar Burton came in and I was totally star struck. I grew up watching ‘Reading Rainbow’ and had to try so hard to not sing the theme song. “But they’re just normal people who are coming in and getting a service so they are getting treated exactly like everybody else. They really do. I don’t have any weird meltdown stories. Well, one time I had to hold up a blanket for like an hour in front of Paula Abdul. The paparazzi was outside of the window and we didn’t have shades at the time.” – Katie Cazorla (Nail Files)

‘Horrible Bosses’ Is your boss crazy, mean or sexually harass you? Yes, yes, and yes… is the answer to the question for the characters played by Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis. In this comedy, they hire a hit man (Jamie Foxx) to kill their bosses portrayed by Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston and Colin Farrel. (93 minutes)

‘The Robber’ The true story of Johann Rettenberger (Andreas Lust), a champion marathon athlete who developed a double life as a serial bank robber, simply as a hobby. In German with English subtitles. (97 minutes) Playing exclusively at the Film Bar in downtown Phoenix, AZ

‘Spike and Mike’s New Generation of Animation’

This next presentation of ‘Spike and Mike’ focuses on the flat-out best and funniest animated shorts that the world has to offer. Award winning animated shorts from the top talents around the globe presents the most impressive and electrifying possibilities that creativity has to offer. (90 minutes) Playing exclusively at the Film Bar in downtown Phoenix, AZ

‘The Zookeeper’ When their shy caretaker (Kevin James) decides he needs to switch careers to find a woman, zoo animals reveal their secret ability to talk and teach him how to woo the ladies. The Royale Coming to Mesa

exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (NR – 83 minutes)

By Randy Montgomery

While adding a business to an empty storefront in this economy is always something to cheer about, the grand opening of Mesa’s The Royale theatre is a dream born out of a lot of hard work. Andrea BeesleyBrown, a.k.a. “Midnite Movie Mamacita” has been showing campy, offthe-wall, independent and grindhouse horror flicks for years at locations throughout the Valley. “The goal of doing Midnite Movie Mamacita was to build enough of a crowd to sustain a venue,” says Beesley-Brown. “So, after five years and trying out different venues (Paper Heart, Chandler Cinemas, Madcap Theaters), I was at the point of wanting my own base of operation.” The perfect location was found on Main Street in Downtown Mesa. The name? “We wanted something classy, but cheesy.” There are corporate multiplexes in every Valley neighborhood, yet none of them had the guts to show The Human Centipede, Birdemic or Trash Humpers. “I have a passion for these types of films and no one else was screening them. I thought, ‘if I want to see these films on the big screen, I’ll just show them myself.’”

The Royale will be unlike any other theatre. What’s so different? “Everything,” explains BeesleyBrown. “A smaller, intimate venue (80 seats)… You can pop your own popcorn… We will be selling DVDs, posters, t-shirts. We have retro arcade games. We have a giant television with VHS tapes you can watch waiting for your movie to start.” Details: The Royale 108 W Main Street - Mesa www.TheRoyaleAz.com Grand Opening Friday, July 8, 2011 Grand Opening Film: Hobo With a Shotgun Capsule Review: With cinematography reminiscent of Disney’s Dick Tracy and violence on the scale of Tarantino, this one is a wild ride. Rutger Hauer stars as a homeless man that will stop at nothing to rid the city of its criminals. Squeamish beware. Otherwise, a solid B+.

Genevieve Gorder, Vern Yip and Candice Olson are back on the judging panel, but expect some changes as “Design Star” begins its sixth season Monday, July 11, on HGTV. Tanika Ray (“HGTV’d”) joins the hit reality series as host of these new episodes, and HGTV favorite David Bromstad also

is on hand as mentor to the contestants, something that’s helpful to both the stressed-out designers and the judges trying to evaluate their work, says Gorder. “You know how ‘Project Runway’ has Tim Gunn? I think even more so in a competition like this, having someone who can talk to you about the medium of 4.5” xshe 2.375” television is so necessary,” explains.ad “If (the contestants) can’t communicate on television their personality, a natural ease, a genuine quality about themselves along with their design, people are not going to want to watch them, regardless of how good the design itself is. And you can’t train a genuine quality or personality. We 9” x 1” ad find out about that more quickly with a coach than we would if we just saw them on the judging platform.”

Emily Rose of ‘Haven’ on Syfy “Something to Talk About” (1995) Julia Roberts got top billing in this 1995 big-screen romantic comedy about a woman who is married to a handsome philanderer (Dennis Quaid), but it was Sedgwick who walked off with the movie as Roberts’ tart-tongued sister. “The Closer” (2005-present, TnT) In this characterdriven police drama, Sedgwick takes on what has become her signature role as Brenda Leigh Johnson, a Georgia police detective with a knack for using her Southern charm to close tough Los Angeles cases.

Q: Given the first-season cliffhanger of “Haven” – which suggested your character, Audrey, might not be who she had seemed – how do you go forward from there in this week’s season premiere?

4.5” x 2.375” ad

A: It was pretty jarring. That whole last episode was great, and it was a really huge question to be faced with. That was one of the big challenges for me at the front end of this season ... after receiving that sort of news, how you move forward with it. 4.5” As x 2.375” ad the character, how do I straddle both sides of the fence, dealing with my own issues and carrying on as usual? I thought it was a creative way that they’d be recasting me, honestly.

Giada De Laurentiis of ‘Food Network Star’ Any woman wearing killer heels when she’s on camera from the waist up is a fashionista. Giada De Laurentiis is such a woman. De Laurentiis looks fabulous; admittedly she starts with the advantage of being beautiful and keeping her petite frame thin. Her passion for fashion is evident on “Food Network Star” Sundays, and “Giada at Home” Saturdays on Food Network. De Laurentiis describes her style as “casual chic.” Just before shooting the

Sports have been described as the ultimate reality show. Maybe that’s why we find reality series about sports so compelling. This month, Showtime calls a new documentary series up to the majors with “The Franchise: A Season With the San Francisco Giants,” a joint effort of Showtime and MLB Productions. It embeds a camera crew with the reigning World Series champs, capturing what happens on and off the field with the players, coaches and frontoffice personnel. The series premieres July 13 and airs for six consecutive Wednesdays. Viewers will get an inside-theclubhouse look at what goes into

making a world champion as well as the colorful personalities that make up the team. The stellar pitching rotation includes 2008 and Tim Lincecum ’09 NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum, Jonathan Sanchez and 4.5” includes x 2.375” Matt Cain. The lineup suchad fan favorites as third baseman “Kung Fu Panda” Pablo Sandoval, outfielder Aaron Rowand and catcher Buster Posey, 2010’s NL Rookie of the Year. Expect plenty of screen time for full-bearded closer Brian Wilson (and maybe his leather-clad friend “The Machine”).

Set in a middle-class neighborhood in 1980s Atlanta, the novel revolves around bigamist James Witherspoon’s two families—the public one and the secret one. When the daughters from each family meet and form a friendship, only one of them knows they are sisters. It is a relationship destined to explode when secrets are revealed and illusions shattered. Tayari Jones is an Associate Professor in the MFA program at Rutgers-Newark University. Silver Sparrow has been featured in O magazine, Vogue, Poets & Writers, and on NPR’s All Things Considered. 7pm • STEVEN PETROW: STEVE PETROW’S COMPLETE GAY AND LESBIAN MANNERS Steven Petrow, one of America’s foremost authorities on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues, presents Steven Petrow’s Complete Gay and Lesbian Manners: The Definitive Guide to LGBT Life. This encyclopedic guide covers everything from coming out in the workplace and dealing with the complexity of same-sex weddings and commitment ceremonies to handling the legal paperwork every couple needs and the challenges and opportunities of raising a family. There are also sections on travel, bullying, entertaining, meeting new friends, introducing your partner to your family, a primer on gay pride, and so much more. Petrow is currently the Huffington Post’s manners columnist, and his column, “Queeries,” is syndicated in more than two dozen national newspapers and websites.

7pm • PAM GABER: GABRIEL’S ANGELS • Pam Gaber, founder of the non-profit therapy dog organization Gabriel’s Angels, visits with Gabriel’s Angels: The Story of the Dog Who Inspired a Revolution. Gaber never set out to change the world; she just thought the kids at the Phoenix Crisis Nursery where she volunteered would get a kick out of seeing her dog, Gabriel, wearing a pair of fake antlers to a Christmas party. Inspired by the children’s overwhelming enchantment with Gabriel, Gaber left corporate America and started Gabriel’s Angels—a program that works to end the cycle of abuse for neglected, abused, and at-risk children through pet therapy. Part memoir, part biography, Gabriel’s Angels is the story of the first ten years of Gabriel’s Angels and the amazing therapy dog who started it all, personally interacted with over 10,000 children, and touched countless lives. A portion of the proceeds from book sales go to Gabriel’s Angels, a local non-profit organization. More info: GabrielsAngels.org.

7pm • BAXTER BLACK: LESSONS FROM A DESPERADO POET • America’s Cowboy Poet Baxter Black, a popular NPR commentator and author of the nationally syndicated column “On the Edge of Common Sense,” presents his new book Lessons from a Desperado Poet. Part memoir, part poetry collection, and part how-to, it’s a witty take on making a living by doing the right thing and trying everything. 2011 SUMMER SEASONAL BEERS: SMOOTH SAILIN’ FROM HERE ON OUT 118! 118 degrees…last Saturday… Really? Well if the temps are up that high, then clearly we are a little late with our annual Summer Beer article. Not to worry though, because there is still plenty of hot weather left and plenty of summer seasonal beers left to drink. We got you covered with the best ones out there, so sit back, relax and make a trip to your local store after you read this to make sure you are properly stocked up to ride out the rest of the summer. The concept of seasonal beers is not particularly new. Beer has

always been produced seasonally except long ago it was the season that dictated what beers were produced. For example the Saison (which literally means “season”) came about in Belgium so that farmers would have beer to drink during the planting and harvest season. These beers were produced in the late winter, early spring and designed to be consumed throughout the summer and early fall when there was no time for a hard working farmer to brew beer. Märzen beers have a similar story. Throughout history beers have been produced to coincide with the season, whether it was due to certain ingredients being available only during a particular season, or whether it was because of other restrictions, such as our Belgian farmer friends experienced, many beers evolved around seasonal

availability. In the United States, we are fortunate. Beer is produced seasonally not out of necessity, but out of a desire to put the right beer in front of you the drinker for the time of year. For example, fall beers tend to be a little earthy and many may contain pumpkin or some other seasonal ingredient. Winter beers are typically rich and full bodied, perhaps a little higher in alcohol, the better to enjoy during the cold winter months (okay in Arizona, maybe the slightly cooler winter months, but you get the idea). Naturally that means the when the weather is hot; the beers will tend to be a little lighter. This makes them a little more refreshing and easier to drink when the body is not looking for anything heavy. Continued on page 44...

...Continued from page 42. Enough background, what can you drink this summer? Let’s run through some of the best summer beers out there, in no particular order, and see what makes them tick. Perhaps one of the oldest favorites in Arizona comes from wine country. Anderson Valley Summer Solstice is a nice rich, but lighter bodied, beer that has incredible flavor and is perfect with summer foods. Done in the Cream Ale style, this copper colored ale is a silky, creamy dream. It’s malty, very mildly hopped, and lightly sweet, with a delicate hint of spice for an extra velvety flavor. A cool beer for the heat, whatever your latitude! Another long time favorite is Alaskan Summer Ale. This beer is brewed in the Kölsch style and is perfect for the summer. Light and malty with just enough Hallertauer hops to balance everything out. Speaking of Kölsch, Curveball from Pyramid is available again this year as well. And Big Sky’s Summer Honey fits the bill for the hot weather. Created with a special blend of spices, Northwest hops and Montana honey, this offering from the folks in Missoula is outstanding in this heat. The same can be said of Breckenridge’s

SummerBright Ale. The brewer’s deft touch on this beer combines white wheat, two row pale and munich malt with the pacific northwest’s most intriguing hops to create a bright, clean ale ideal for picnicking, evenings on the screen porch and enjoying the whims of the summer breeze, or just hiding in your living room waiting for the temperature to drop. We also have some of our longtime favorite breweries introducing new seasonal releases. New Belgium may be at the top of that list with Somersault which replaced the popular Skinny Dip this year. Somersault is the perfect summer lounge-around beer. Somersault tumbles out with citrus aroma from Centennial hops, a soft apricot fruitiness tucked into the flavor, a full mouthfeel from the addition of oats and a crisp, dry finish from the subtle addition of ginger. For those of you that loved Skinny Dip, don’t worry, New Belgium plans to alternate their seasonals every year so expect to see it back next year. Another brewery with a new seasonal release is Bridgeport out of Portland Oregon. This brewery has not one but two new seasonals. First up is Stumptown Tart. Stumptown is a nickname for Portland that dates back to the mid19th century and the beer uses fresh strawberries to give it a little sweetness. The other summer release from Bridgeport is Summer Squeeze, a refreshing light ale made with a little lemongrass and yuzu juice. The yuzu fruit is a small citrus fruit that is unique as compared to lemons and lime. It gives a subtle tartness that really refreshes. Another unusual citrus fruit from Asia is the Satsuma. This very tiny orange grows in the southeastern part of the United States and Abita Brewing uses it in the summer edition of their Harvest Series, named appropriately Satsuma Wit. The other Continued on page 46...

the English drink, Shandygaff, but is really more of a European Radler style. Either way it is great summer drinking. Newcastle in England, known exclusively for their brown ale, has joined the seasonal team as well. The Newcastle Summer Ale is an English Bitter style and provides a nice treat and is a change of pace for the drinkers of this brand. Brand new to this market is Ska’s summer offering, Mexican Logger.

This play on words results in a nice take on the traditional Mexican style lager beer. The hops used are in keeping with the pun…they are, of course, Saaz…wait for it, you’ll get it. Also new to the Arizona market is Green Flash’s Summer Saison. This beer is a delicious golden farmhouse ale, brewed with orange peel, ginger, and grains of paradise. A very refreshing, Belgian-inspired summer ale. Shmaltz Brewing is known for their unusual beers and this summer look for Human Blockhead. The beer is not quite a traditional summer beer, having been brewed in the dopplebock style and weighing in at 10% ABV. There you have your 2011 summer seasonal beers. We have plenty of hot weather left, maybe even another 118 degree day, so enjoy all of these beers. Just make sure you have plenty in stock.

summer beer from Abita is their Wheat Ale which is an American styled wheat beer.

Blue Moon also has a summer version of their incredibly popular wheat beer and Leinenkugel has released its Summer Shandy again. This lemon flavored beer is named after July 7th, 2011 - July 13th, 2011

Leaping New Boundaries while Refreshing to the Fullest By King James Swann Hello again, I hope last week’s review of Gulden Draak tickled your fancy, but now we venture into even more creative territory with New Belgium’s La Folie Sour Brown Ale. La Folie is from New Belgium’s Lips of Faith series and truly emulates beer styles from Belgium. First a bit about the brewery, New Belgium resides in Fort Collins, Colorado and began in 1989. Jeff Lebesch, original brew master & owner returned home from a trip to Belgium with ideas on how to give the beers that he loved a touch of American craft. His wife Kim soon followed his follies becoming their first bottler, sales rep & marketing director. One important detail of note, in addition to brewing, New Belgium sets themselves apart from most American breweries with a detailed focus on clean emissions & resource sustainability. The use

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

of windmills helps to greatly reduce their carbon foot print& you are even given a Fat Tire bicycle at one year of employment to encourage your own green habits! Ok, let’s talk beer. I’ll begin by saying that La Folie is a true Sour Brown ale. Inspired by old world Flemish sours, this brew is aged in French Oak barrels for one to three years before bottling and is a very unique experience. Flavors of sour green apples, lite caramel, vanilla & fruity esters abound, while a dry finish & a citrus aftertaste make for a refreshing experience. Many of these exotic flavors come courtesy of wild fermentation. Wild fermentation occurs when yeast strains & bacteria other than standard brewer’s yeasts are allowed to invade and influence the fermentation process.

Phoenix’ Landmark Sports Bar Since 1998

LA FOLIE ‘LIPS OF FAITH’ SERIES

Although sour, La Folie has more complexity than you might imagine. Chocolate & Munich malts give it a deep brown color and more character as the beer begins to warm. This brew would pair beautifully with Seared Tuna over wild greens, with red & yellow bell peppers and balsamic vinaigrette. ABV is about 6% and in the truest of Belgian fashion, hop character sits at a low 18 IBUs. Sour beers have recently begun to attract a lot of attention here in the U.S. While most certainly an acquired taste, they are well worth trying. La Folie can be found in better craft beer stores around the valley such as Papago Brewing, Taste of Tops and Sun Devil Liquors. If it’s draft you are seeking, there is only one keg in the entire valley. Visit Whole Foods, Chandler and try it before it is gone! Until next time, Cheers! July 7th, 2011 - July 13th, 2011

“No shirt? No shoes? Perfect!” Drinks, crazy variety when it comes to food, and beautiful people is never a bad combination. Spanish Fly Beach Club is awesome to cool down in this Arizona heat! Happy hour is Monday - Friday from 11-7pm. Two for “Juan” specials on all wells and daiquiris, house margaritas, drafts, and half off all beach party drinks. The ambiance is all about having a good time and will make you come back for more! 4341 North 75th Street Scottsdale, AZ 85251 Cantinas are not everyone’s thing but I dig it. San Felipe’s always gives me what I want! Great service, food, drinks, and a staff that’s easy on the eye. Happy hour EVERY DAY from 4-7pm for ½ price drinks and appetizers. Honestly, I am a sucker for the bottomless chips and salsa, I am sure you will be too. 2000 East Rio Salado Pkwy # 1001, Tempe, AZ I am the kind of female that loves sports, and Sandbar is a great place to get a little play out of my system. There is sand around the outside bar with a little mini pool just for decoration. Have some drinks and play volleyball? That’s always a blast! Half off appetizers and drinks, and kids eat free on Mondays. Their “Taco Tuesdays” are delicious with $2 tacos and $4 margaritas! Having a few margaritas is definitely my way to cool off in the summer! 9868 W. Northern Avenue, Peoria, AZ 85345

SOCIAL FINANCE Nooo, this is not a column on internet dating. It is, however a type of matchmaking. Social Finance is a practice of bringing together people to utilize the tools of finance and social networking. Social Finance is a Marketplace for matching borrowers and lenders without leaving your computer. Going are the days of walking into your local bank. This finance venue has proven its mainstream chops when an episode of The Simpsons Titled “Loan-A-Lisa”, explored the basic concepts. Consistent with all progress, there are pros and cons to everything. I like the alternatives the internet offers yet, I like walking into my local branch where everyone knows my name. The request for more downto-earth and sustainable ways of dealing with money and finance has surfaced to international attention. Particularly in Europe, social banks were among the most successful financial institutions during the crisis years, with annual growth rates of up to 30%, doubling their assets from 2007 to 2010. In recent years, social banks have forged influential global networks, which pursue the ambitious strategy of reaching out to 1 billion people by 2020. Increasing numbers of people are improving their financial literacy and are taking a growingly critical stance towards the mainstream international banking and finance sector as we knew it before the crisis. Knowledge is power. I SAY it is time for a Plan B, and increasingly for some, that means peer-to-peer lending. Here’s what you need to know; Peer-to-Peer Lending, which is also called Social Lending or Social Finance, is done online. There are several sites where you can find and lend money.

THE BIG RISK WITH P2P IS THE UNSECURED NATURE OF THE LOANS. Some groups have now combined the P2P model with secured asset lending. If you are considering diversifying your investments I‘d recommend the security.

The Night Owl Summer Spectacular Art Walk Most Phoenicians try to avoid stepping outside during the summer heat unless it’s to a pool. The city of Scottsdale understands this reluctance. They also understand the significance of satisfying us art enthusiasts who know Scottsdale for being one of the best places in the country to go to for art. So with the intention of getting people out of their homes and away from air conditioning for a while, Old Town Scottsdale will be hosting a wonderfully, spectacular art walk involving free iced tea so no one gets dehydrated. The art walk will be held on Thursday just before the sun sets at 7:00 between Main and Marshall road. There will be artist demonstrations, exhibit openings, food samplings from local restaurants, and wine tastings for the alcoholics. To furthermore distract you from the heat, Tera Crisalda will be playing some Brazilian jazz and Angela Levitt will provide you with pop music. Scottsdale-based book illustrator, Sylvia Long will also be present for a book signing. Afterwards, hit up some of the old town bars and restaurants to satisfy your Thursday thirst. Thursday, July 7th. 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Free. www.scottsdalegalleries.com/events.html

Trader Vic’s 5th year

Anniversary Celebration at the Hotel Valley Ho Maybe you didn’t know this, but Trader Vic himself created the rum, lime, and Curaçao liqueur concoction we know as the Mai Tai back in 1944 at the original Trader Vic’s restaurant in Oakland, CA. Since then, no tiki party is a real tiki party without them being served. Just some years ago, the Polynesian themed restaurant opened in one of Scottsdale’s landmarks, the Hotel Valley Ho, and has given those of us craving island flavor, a destination for great drink specials and a renewed desire to go to Hawaii. In honor of its opening five years ago, there will be a celebration held on Friday with very persuasive drink specials. $3 beers, $4 wines, $5 Svedka and rum cocktails including the Mai Tai—doesn’t this sound glorious?! DJ Mr. P-Body will provide the tunes and if you didn’t select a designated driver for the evening, then just stay at the Valley Ho for a special room rate of $99. It may even be a good idea to plan a little staycation for the

Zombieland It’s so thrilling to be at a dance party, letting your body sway and bounce to beats so heavy and resonating that you literally feel your heart dancing inside your chest to the same rhythm everyone else is moving to. You know the DJ is skilled when you look around the room and everyone is pulsing to the same beat, hands up and reaching for the sky trying to become one with the sound waves bursting through the air. Imagine if all those people were dressed as zombies having the time of their lives. Or should I say, unlives? This Saturday experience it for yourself at this dance party revolving around the 2009 Zombie comedy film. You can even eat deep fried twinkies at the food village that will be set up along with shaved ice to stain your mouth red and keep you cool when the sweating starts. Over a dozen DJs are scheduled to spin including 2tonedisco, Octagon, Schwasted, Matthew Harris, and DJ Zombie himself. Call the info line the day of to uncover the secret venue: (602)-341-EV1L. Saturday, July 9th. 7:00 pm – 3:00 am. $15 before 9, $20 afterwards.

By GeorGe Dickie

It might seem rather odd that a franchise that has nurtured such high-caliber pitching talent as Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, Jerry Koosman and Dwight Gooden has yet to produce a no-hitter. Yet over the first 50 years of its existence, the New York Mets remain bereft in that department. But if it were to happen, the man to do it might be Dillon Gee, the 25-yearold right-hander who has drawn comparisons to Greg Maddux for his reliance on location and consistency. Through mid-June, Gee was unbeaten for the season, going 7-0 with an ERA of 3.05. Further, the sub-.500 Mets have won all nine games Gee has started this year, one of which was a no-no he took into the sixth inning against Washington on May 19. Gee, who patterns his approach after that of fellow Texan Ryan, came to the Mets as an unheralded 21st-round pick out of the University of Texas-Arlington in 2007. After pitching well his first two years in the Mets system, Gee was sidelined for the 2009 season by a partially torn labrum in his right shoulder. He returned to ClassAAA Buffalo in ’10, going 13-8 with a 4.96 ERA in a season in which his primary goal was to re-establish his health. He was called up to New York in September and made an immediate impact when he took a no-hitter into the sixth in a 4-1 win over Washington on Sept. 7.
