Emotions are high as three diverse couples cope with the overwhelming, rewarding and comical consequences of conceiving a baby. Follow the college students, barely at the beginning of their adult lives; the thirty-somethings, having trouble conceiving but determined to try; and the middle-aged parents, looking forward to seeing their last child graduate from college when a night of unexpected passion leads to a surprise pregnancy. With an upbeat musical score embracing jazz, folk and pop styles, this charming show takes a humorous and heartfelt look at “what to expect when you’re expecting!”

2011 Summer Series Sponsored in part by:

The Good Lovelies

Sunday, July 17 | 6:30 p.m.

Tickets: $25–$30 Swinging harmonies, hilarious tales, and infectious joy make these three Juno Award-winning Canadian ladies the perfect antidote to the cabin fever of an Arizona summer.

July 31st 2011 at 7:30pm Hapa’s Barry Flanagan and Nathan Aweau embrace the wider cultures of the pan-Polynesian South Pacific in this wide-ranging performance at the Compound Grill on July 31st. Flanagan describes their most recent work, “Maui” as “A soundtrack for 21st century Polynesia where native art, history and music are pulled together by the powerful force of Maui.” Charles Ka’upu’s stirring chants and stories mesh with Kawena Chun’s dramatic and graceful Hula to add cultural sinew to Hapa’s strong musical bones.

A Hawk and a Hacksaw Friday, July 22 | 7:00 p.m.

Tickets: $25

Sparkling with Gypsy and Balkan influences, this New Mexico–based duo’s music straddles their adopted home of Eastern Europe and their true home in the Southwest. Featuring Jeremy Barnes (formerly of the bands Beirut and Neutral Milk Hotel) and Heather Trost.

With a pulse and energy that make it entirely of today, Hapa’s groundbreaking music connects firmly to the Polynesian past, featuring poetic ballads about the sea, the lushness of the land, and favorite chiefs all told through melodies rich in harmony and backed by virtuoso guitar. Add their signature dose of American acoustic folk/rock, Celtic and world influences and you have the essence of what Hawaii and Hapa music is: “beautiful, fragile, spiritual, powerful” ---LA Times. Tickets are $20 + sales tax and are available online at www.thecompoundgrill.com , 480.585.5483 or at the day of the show at the Compound Grill Box Office. Reservations can be made at 480.585.5483 The Compound Grill @ 7:30pm 7000 E. Mayo Boulevard, Scottsdale www.thecompoundgrill.com/

Maricopa is growing up! Five stories up, to be exact. Harrah’s AkChin Casino Resort unveils its new hotel tower with a Grand Celebration on July 15. The $20 million expansion, which began construction in June 2010, nearly doubles the size of the hotel, offering 152 new rooms including five suites. “We are very fortunate that our hotel is always full”, said Robert Livingston, general manager. “By adding these additional rooms, we will be able to welcome more Harrah’s guests to enjoy the warm hospitality we provide.” Major changes include a new front desk and lobby area with sparkling floors, modern seating areas and artisticallyplaced light. The front desk is designed so there is no barrier between the guest and staff, creating an easy way to communicate. Harrah’s held nothing back in quality, including only the best and the latest in hotel features. Each of the spacious rooms in the new five-story tower includes top-of-the-line amenities such as granite counter tops, jumbo flat screen TVs, and a centralized media/technology hub. Beds boast luxurious linens and pillow-topped mattresses. With spacious showers and large closets, Harrah’s Ak-Chin is redesigning what it means to be a resort. The suites feature two 50-inch flat screen TVs, one perfect for viewing from your bed and another in the off-set living area. The bathroom has an extra-deep porcelain tub letting guests submerge in ultimate relaxation. With rooms like these, why would you want to ever leave your room? The 40,000-square-foot casino has the largest selection of reel and video slots, video poker, live keno, plus table games from blackjack to a poker room featuring live games and tournaments - everything you need for a thrilling gaming experience. plus live music in the Oasis Lounge and add to this - the Southern Dunes Golf Club is just a few miles away! Guests also have their choice of four places to eat, from The Range Steakhouse to a recently remodeled buffet. Power and Associates’ Indian Gaming Casino Satisfaction Study. In addition, the casino was named a 2010 Most Admired Company by Arizona Business Magazine and BestCompaniesAZ. Phoenix Business Journal has also named the property one of the “Best Places to Work in the Valley” in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Whether you are looking to win big or relax poolside, practice your golf swing or play a poker hand - Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino Resort has something for everyone to enjoy. In “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” the battle between the good and evil forces of the wizarding world escalates into an all-out war. The stakes have never been higher and no one is safe. But it is Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) who may be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice as he draws closer to the climactic showdown with Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). (PG-13 – 130 minutes)

with round eyeglasses, a lightening bolt forehead scar and a makeshift magic wand – for my weekly radio segment 9:30 a.m. Friday on KBSZ – NBC 1260 AM and 96.1 FM (watch the Web cam at www. nbc1260.com). However, I shall not shed a single tear for ‘Harry Potter’ – regardless if Lord Voldemort wins the ‘climactic showdown’ or not. After all, there are better family-friendly fantasy film franchises out there, such as ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians.’ Moreover, there will always be some cinematic sensation. We still have ‘The Twilight Saga’ for two more installments and then ‘The Hunger Games’ is almost guaranteed to become the next movie

were the first ones to see each installment. Audiences have dressed up like their favorite character, brought brooms to the movie, wore cloaks and acted out scenes in front of the screen. Sure, I buy into hype. I’m the first one to follow mobile food vendors around town and have their tweets come to my phone. While on vacation, I have driven all over Southern California chasing Korean taco trucks. ‘Harry Potter’ is just one of those hypes that never captured my interest. From a critical standpoint, the cinematography, special effects and storylines are worth recognizing and the acting by Radcliffe and crew outshine the ‘Twilight’ cast by a mile.

AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s Film Section! contributors Joseph J. Airdo, Randy Montgomery and Stan Robinson provided the following reactions in response to the last 10 years of “Harry Potter” hysteria. At 27 years old, Joseph is a Walter Cronkite School of Journalism graduate with a degree in media analysis and criticism. Randy, at 34 years old, holds a Master’s Degree in Counseling and Education and works in media and marketing. And, at 64 years old, Stan is a retired First Assistant Director with more than 22 years of experience in film and media production. Joseph: “To be completely honest, I have never quite understood the universal infatuation with the ‘Harry Potter’ film franchise. I accept it but I cannot comprehend the craze. Even my 81-year-old friend has been infected with Pottermania. Upon witnessing the enthusiasm surrounding each of its eight installments, I have been left scratching my head, recalling the copious other motion pictures that are knocked to the wayside by the wizarding world of ‘Harry Potter’ despite being more worthy of its hysteria. In 2005, ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’ opened so strong that it robbed the far superior fantasy flick ‘Zathura’ of an opportunity to earn back its budget. The injustice continued in 2007 with the release of ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,’ a movie that caused one of Pixar’s best animated features ‘Ratatouille’ to have the studio’s second-lowest opening weekend. And the damage has not been limited to family-friendly films, either, as ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1’ single-handedly annihilated one of last year’s best motion pictures ‘The Next Three Days.’ Having said that, I find myself a sucker for a phenomenon. That is why I have tasted every flavor of Bertie Bott’s jelly bean in existence and also why I intend to dress up as the boy wizard – complete

marvel. On the other hand, there will always only be one ‘Harry Potter’ (unless, of course, Warner Bros. opts to reboot the franchise) and I can most certainly respect its influence as a pop culture prodigy.” Randy: “After 10 years and eight films, the decade of ‘Harry Potter’ is over. Nineteen and a half hours of our lives have been spent watching Harry and his friends learn wizardry, spells, fight villains and play ridiculous games such as Quidittich. Terms like ‘The Golden Snitch,’ ‘Quaffles,’ and ‘Muggles’ have become part of global vocabulary. Fans have spent countless additional hours sitting outside in folding chairs and on the floor of theater lobbies to say they

Fantasy has never been a favorite genre of mine and I’ve never liked ‘make believe.’ That being said, ‘Harry Potter’ has been one of my least favorite series of movies and ranks up there with my dislike for ‘The Lord of the Rings.’ These movies never made any sense to me and were always at least a half an hour too long. “Credit must be given where it is due though; J.K. Rowling’s creativity is unmatched and the empire she built will go down in history books. She has managed to capture the attention of people worldwide; all ages, all backgrounds. Getting children and adults to read and away from video games and computers is always a good thing.

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

The popularity of the series will live on through DVD, merchandising and theme park attractions. The series is too popular to die. This may be ‘the end,’ but that doesn’t mean this is the last we will see of Harry, on screen or anywhere else.” Stan: “The word ‘franchise’ has become synonymous with a movie series of films. The longest running movie franchise that comes to mind is the James Bond films covering 30 years. With the release of “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’ (2007) and the fifth film in the franchise, the combined worldwide box office grosses for those first five Harry Potter films was in excess of $4.47 billion, surpassing the box office totals of all the James Bond films at the time (22) and the six Star Wars movies. The source material for the films is British author J. K. Rowling’s books with the idea for them being conceived on a train trip from Manchester to London in 1990. The books have won multiple awards, sold more than 400 million copies and Rowling had overall approval on the scripts, as well as maintaining creative control by serving as a producer on ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Parts 1 and 2. Her own “rags to riches” life story could be source for a movie with her progression from living on benefits to multi-millionaire status. As of March 2011, when its latest world billionaire’s list was published, Forbes estimated Rowling’s net worth to be $1 billion with a ranking as the twelfth richest woman in Great Britain.

Reviewers’ Roundtable: The ‘Harry Potter’ Polemic

Admittedly, I haven’t read a single Harry Potter book. And although I find the Potter films to be visually captivating and very well produced from a production standpoint, the first six films content/story theme left me with the feeling of watching the TV series ‘90201’, centering on ‘teenage angst with magic thrown in for good measure’. It wasn’t until last year’s ‘Deathly Hallows Part 1’ where I really became interested in the 3 friends and the ultimate battle they were about to undertake. ‘Hallows’ is darker in its theme, the friends are older and more settled in each of their personalities. Just when my interest has been piqued, the series is set to end. Strange how the Harry Potter loyalists throughout the years, and myself, can arrive at the same overall thought of, ‘Be nice to see more of Harry Potter’, for different reasons… ” Read Joseph’s, Randy’s and Stan’s full reviews of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” exclusively online at Examiner. com, AZWeekly.com and ScreenScene.org, respectively. Melissa McCarthy (who, in addition to appearing in “Bridesmaids,” stars in the CBS sitcom “Mike and Molly”) and Ryan Lee (the kid with the braces in “Super 8”) have joined the cast of Judd Apatow’s untitled comedy in which Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann reprise their characters from 2007’s “Knocked Up.” Albert Brooks and Megan Fox are also among the cast. ‘Bride Flight’ A romantic drama following the lives of three women from different backgrounds, whose lives are forever changed, when they immigrate to New Zealand as war brides. Dutch with English subtitles. Playing exclusively at the Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 130 minutes) Randy: “This well acted romantic drama spans decades and involves the death of the male lead character and how his life charted the course

Bet You Didn’t Know! by Stan Robinson

of history for the women he was involved with. It sure seems as if you are watching a Nicholas Sparks flick (if Sparks spoke Dutch). The tangled lives of the characters keep you interested, but the back story of those emigrating from The Netherlands to New Zealand is just as fascinating.”

‘Phase 7’ Inside a quarantined apartment building, a man (Daniel Hendler) must protect his pregnant wife from his neighbors. In Spanish with English subtitles. Screening 10 p.m. Wednesdays and Midnight Fridays through July exclusively at AMC Westgate 20. (PG-13 – 98 minutes) Joseph: “Rather than incorporating a supernatural twist as seen in ‘REC’ and its American remake ‘Quarantine,’ writer/director Nicolás Goldbart focus on the true terrors that are bound to accompany a plague of apocalyptic magnitude with this sci-fi thriller. Much like in 2009’s ‘Carriers,’ the horrors here are hatched by humans are therefore far more frightening than anything George Romero could dream up.” Grade: B

‘Project Nim’ In the 1970s, Professor Herb Terrace and his team raise a baby chimp like a human child as part of an experiment intended to break the language barrier between animals and people. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (PG-13 – 99 minutes) Joseph: “Who knew that a movie about a monkey could elicit so many enduring emotions? With his latest documentary ‘Project Nim,’ director James Marsh tells the lifelong tale of tremendous tragedy experienced by one creature at the hands of inhumanity incarnate. Complete and utter devastation has never passed Continued on Page 15...

The first version of “Red Dawn” (1984) was the first movie to be handed the PG-13 rating. The latest retelling starring Chris Hemsworth (as ‘Thor’) is due later this year!

Randy: “Absolutely fascinating! This one by far one of the best documentaries made to date. The emotion and drama could not be scripted. You are on the edge of your seating waiting to see what will happen to Nim next, while you become just as wrapped up in the lives of the human players as well. Their involvement in the scientific experiment is just as complicated and makes for individual subplots worthy of their own film.” Grade: A+ Stan: “When a film, especially a documentary, can truly make one reexamine our relationship to animal life around us and our impact on them, from the common household pets of dogs and cats, animals in the ever popular zoos and sanctuaries, to sending them into space as a prelude non-risk factor for humans, and, testing in laboratories for medicines and surgical procedures, director James Marsh presents the alarmingly stirring chronicle of the chimpanzee Nim. Just as the human participants lives were changed forever due to their involved with ‘Project Nim’, this reviewer’s view of animals has been changed, forever… ” Grade: A

‘TrollHunter’ A group of students investigate a series of mysterious bear killings, but learns that there are much more dangerous things going on. They start to follow a mysterious hunter, learning that he is actually a troll hunter. In Norwegian with English subtitles. Playing exclusively at The Royale. (PG-13 – 90 minutes) Joseph: “Writer/director André Øvredal’s mockumentary “TrollHunter” is freakishly fun. However, one may not find it easy to shake the absurdity associated

with its fairy tale premise, making the movie more humorous than hairraising. One can only hope that Chris Columbus, who has picked up remake rights, will find a way to improve upon the legend’s legitimacy in his Englishlanguage version.” Grade: C Randy: “This ‘mockumentary’ from Norway starts off like many others in the genre; with a message from the producers stating they received ‘footage’ and verified its authenticity. While the premise and style may be familiar, the plot of a troll hunter is unique. Trolls may be more intriguing to audiences overseas, as you do not see many films centered around them here. That’s what makes this otherwise familiar film a good time.” Grade: B

‘Winnie the Pooh’

Now Playing! The following new releases were not screened in time for AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s press deadline. Read Joseph J. Airdo, Randy Montgomery and Stan Robinson’s full reviews exclusively online at Examiner. com, AZWeeklyMagazine.com and ScreenScene.org, respectively. ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 The end begins as Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) go back to Hogwarts to find and destroy Voldemort’s (Ralph Fiennes) final horcruxes (a dark magical object used to attain immortality). (PG-13 - 130 minutes)

Set in the Hundred Acre Wood, all of your favorite characters are present; Pooh, Tiger, Eeyore, Rabbit, Owl, Kanga and Roo. All is well with our timeless friends, except that Pooh is out of honey and Eeyore has lost his tail. While Pooh searches for food, he rounds up the gang to help find the missing tail. They enlist the help of Christopher Robin who mysteriously disappears. They believe a devious forest creature, the “Backson”, has snatched him. (G – 69 minutes) Randy: “Children and adults will love Disney’s ‘Winnie the Pooh’ feature film. John Cleese narrates this innocent family-friendly adventure filled with humor. The story jumps back and forth off the page, with the characters interacting with the words and letters from the storybook. As an added bonus, ‘The Ballad of Nessie,’ a sweet little short is presented prior to the film about a lovable Loch Ness monster.” Grade: A

stresses whimsy and fun The emphasis is on design, not domesticity, as husband-and-wife designers Robert and Cortney Novogratz return to series television in “Home by Novogratz,” currently airing Saturdays on HGTV. The Novogratzes probably are best known to viewers for their hit Bravo reality series “9 by Design,” which followed the couple as they worked a series of demanding jobs while parenting their seven children. The kids

aren’t much in evidence in this new show, however. 4.5” x 2.375” ad “We didn’t really want the kids in this one as much at all, although I know a lot of our old fans wanted that,” Robert explains. “We felt we took a big risk with the Bravo show, a calculated risk that turned out great, but we don’t want the kids to be much on TV anymore. You’ll see the kids about 20 seconds per episode.”

If your personal life has an alternative, downtown edge and your work life is mainstream, uptown conservative, wardrobe adjustments are needed. Such is the case with multifaceted Margaret Cho, tattooed over 40 percent of her body. She plays Teri, assistant to a lawyer, on Lifetime’s “Drop Dead Diva.” ‘Teri’s look is very funky,” Cho says. “She wears a lot of ethnic jewelry, and a lot of prints, and a lot of color.”

Cho loves fashion, and for her personal style, shops when in London, Paris, Rome and Marrakech, Morocco. “There are a couple of great designers in Marrakech who have their own lines, and Beldi is one, and he is a wonderful tailor,” 4.5” x 2.375” ad she says. “He takes traditional Moroccan clothing and makes them Margaret Cho really wearable for women.”

Lisa Kudrow’s latest series is poised to make many more friends. The Emmy winner as Phoebe on “Friends” has been honored as a pioneer of online programming such as “Web Therapy,” which she created as Internet “Webisodes” only a few minutes long. The comedy gets wider exposure on Showtime starting Tuesday, July 19, with Kudrow playing a snarky therapist who believes in very brief sessions – conducted, appropriately, over the Internet. “ ‘My Dinner With Andre’ was a great movie,” Kudrow reflects, “but the challenge is to sustain someone’s interest if it’s just two people talking the whole time. Here, we feel like it does, even though it’s just single shots and two-shots.”

Gaber never set out to change the world; she just thought the kids at the Phoenix Crisis Nursery where she volunteered would get a kick out of seeing her dog, Gabriel, wearing a pair of fake antlers to a Christmas party. Inspired by the children’s overwhelming enchantment with Gabriel, Gaber left corporate America and started Gabriel’s Angels—a program that works to end the cycle of abuse for neglected, abused, and at-risk children through pet therapy. A portion of the proceeds from book sales go to Gabriel’s Angels, a local non-profit organization. More info: GabrielsAngels.org. FRIDAY, JULY 15 7pm • CONNIE STRASHEIM, DR. COLLEEN HUBER & DR. JOE BROWN: DEFEAT CANCER • Medical journalist and researcher Connie Strasheim visits with her new book, Defeat Cancer: 15 Doctors of Integrative and Naturopathic Medicine Tell You How. The doctors detail and discuss the pros and cons of different treatments, from anti-cancer remedies, immune system support, and chemotherapy to diet and lifestyle choices. Local naturopath Colleen Huber NMD, who is featured in Defeat Cancer, attends to share her experience in treating many kinds and stages of cancer through herbal medicine, nutrition, intravenous therapies, environmental medicine, and acupuncture. International #IPADay

Attention all craft beer evangelists, brewers, bloggers, and suds-savvy citizens! On Thursday, August 4th 2011, you are cordially invited to participate in the largest international craft beer celebration and virtual

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” conversation the world has ever seen. International #IPADay is a grassroots movement to unite the voices of craft beer enthusiasts, bloggers, and brewers worldwide through social media. On Thursday August 4th, craft beer drinkers across the social sphere and across the globe will raise pints in a collective toast to one of craft beer’s most iconic styles: the India Pale Ale. This celebrated style represents the pinnacle of brewing innovation with its broad spectrum of diverse brands, subcategories, and regional flavor variations – making it the perfect style to galvanize craft beer’s social voice. #IPADay is not the brainchild of a corporate marketing machine, nor is it meant to serve any particular beer

brand. #IPADay is opportunity for breweries, bloggers, businesses and consumers to connect and share their love of craft beer. Getting involved is easy; the only requirements are an appreciation for great beer and the will to spread the word. Anyone can participate by enjoying IPA with friends, making some noise online with the #IPADayhashtag, and showing the world that craft beer is more than a trend! Tips on How to Take Part: 1. Organize an #IPADay event at your brewery, brewpub, restaurant, bar, home, or office (Ex: An IPA dinner/ cheese pairing/comparative or educational tasting/cask night/tap takeover…). Share your events on #IPADay on Rate Beer, Beer Advocate, or other craft beer forums.

2. On August 4th, share your photos, videos, blog posts, tasting notes, recipes, and thoughts with the world. Be sure to include the #IPADayhashtag in your posts Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, WordPress, RateBeer, Beer Advocate, Foursquare, Gowalla, Yelp, Untappd or any other social media site. 3. See what other people are saying by searching “#IPADay” on Google, Twitter, et cetera… 4. Track down your favorite IPA’s, ones you’ve been meaning to try, and ones you’ve never heard of; share them with friends and share your thoughts with the world. 5. SKA Brewing Goes Full Circle by King James Swann

Hello again everyone! Thanks so much for all the feedback on last week’s beer, La Folie Sour Brown Ale. This week let’s chat about Decadent Imperial IPA from Ska Brewing in Durango Colorado. I recently had a Decadent Imperial IPA on tap at Mellow Mushroom in Tempe AZ. and found myself amazed at how much complexity and character was contained within this brew.

BEER! SECTION

DECADENT IMPERIAL IPA

First a bit about the brewery. Ska Brewing took roots in 1995 when beer lovers Dave Thiboudeau &Bill Graham, who were not yet old enough to drink but terribly thirsty, began brewing their own beer. It didn’t take long before a few local brew pubs began featuring Ska beers as Guest Taps and as they say, the rest is history. Medal winners at the L.A. International Beer Competition & recently here in Chandler, AZ. at the Ameri-Can Beer Festival, Ska Brewing has truly come full circle. Alright, onto the beer. Decadent Imperial IPA is a truly complex sensation of flavors. It pours hazy amber with a creamy yellow head and a pronounced nose of pine resin and amber malts. Big hop character, about 95 IBU’s is balanced with sweet malty flavors characterized by toffee, fruity esters and an almost chewy texture. There is no mistaking this brew for anything but an Imperial IPA. Alcohol by Volume Stands firm at 10% and this beer never lets you forget that. Again, the complexities in this beer are where it truly shines. Every mouthful is a bit different as your taste buds work through all of the flavors and textures. As the beer warms it undergoes a transformation and your pallet begins to detect a whole new range of sensory excitement. Tastes include ever so slight hints of vanilla, banana, ripe fruit & anise. On another note, the bottle is also quite remarkable. Its top is covered in melted red wax with a skanking skeleton on its label. There is no mistaking it for anything else and it’s very cool.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeverages.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Decadent IPA scored an 88 on RateBeer. com, but I think is deserving of a higher mark. Take your time with this beer & I think you will agree. Although it stands in the IPA category, I have a feeling that it will age nicely. Grab a bottle of this brew, take it slow and fall in love as I have! As always feel free to send your comments to kingjamesswann@gmail.com. I’d love to hear from you. Until next week, Cheers!

...Continued from page 42. by sharing your experiences online, you’re strengthening the craft beer community at large. Founded in 2011 by beer evangelists and social media personalities Ashley V Routson and Ryan A Ross, International #IPADay is the largest grassroots social media-based celebration of craft beer. The goal of #IPADay is to use social media to strengthen the collective voice of craft beer through the simple celebration of beer itself. The success of #IPADay hinges on the passionate voices of beer enthusiasts worldwide and their willingness to share that passion across the social sphere. Okay, it sounds like a good idea, even if the press release seems more like an opportunity for the “founders” to promote themselves than anything else. Around my house, any day (and sometimes every day) is IPADay. So why do we need a specific day devoted to this “iconic style?” It seems to me that people should be free to drink what they want, when they want without feeling beholden to

a certain beer on a certain day. All that said, why not? If you want to take a day to celebrate this hoppy style of beer, then go ahead and do it. It would be fun to see some of the great beer bars in the state go heavy on hops for one day (not that it doesn’t already happen from time to time). It would be great to see the looks on some of those who have not quite reached out to craft styles if all they could find on August 4th was various versions of India Pale Ale. It would be equally great to see at least a handful of those folks get turned on to the complexity and flavors inherent in an IPA. And it is always a good time when wine drinkers discover how special and wonderful these beers can be. So, what am I saying? I have no idea, but I guess the message should be, celebrate IPADay or don’t celebrate it. On August 5th the only thing that truly matters isn’t whether or not you drank IPAs the previous day, but if you are embracing the changing craft culture in our state. If you are recognizing that those funny looking beers with unusual names are not going away. If you understand that the beer drinking scene is changing for the better and its time to either get on board the light rail or get under the light rail (or something like that, I can never remember how that is supposed to go). I had the pleasure of enjoying a fine event last Thursday that featured several representatives of our local beer scene and while it was interesting to see everybody playing nice, it was even more heartening to see the number of people show up with a true interest, if not a passion for craft beer. As more and more folks get turned on the momentum of craft beer just keeps going and going. This ultimately means that I get to enjoy better beer on a more consistent basis. So thank you to those who make every day IPADay or PaleAleDay or RussianImperialStoutDay, or whatever. It’s not about one day, it is about the ongoing quest for better beer. If this day helps that happen, then so be it. But, as for me, I’m having an IPA right now.

What’s better than getting your favorite beer in a big heavy, frosty mug? Why, getting your name engraved on the mug of course! Introducing the 16th Street Sports Bar’s MUG CLUB and it’s catching on quite fast among its regular patrons. You simply buy the mug once (full of beer of course) on the first round and they keep the mug on hand, washed and ready for your next visit. The mug is only $6 (plus the beer cost) and they actually personalize each mug with hand-carved, diamond engraving so you can drink your beer while showing off your personalized message to everyone at the bar. Keith Prescott, owner of the bar and creator of the concept says, “You can get just about anything on tap at the bar for your 32 oz mug ranging from $4.50 to $6.00 per refill so it is quite a good value. Our customers love it!”. Beers include Miller Lite, Coors Light, Bud Light, 16th Street Lager, Fat Tire, Ranger IPA and many more. New beers are

being added weekly. Since the mug club started, over 80 members have joined and the program is extremely popular so get yours while supplies last. 16th Street Sports Bar is located at 6522 N. 16th Street, Phoenix, 85016. www.16thstreetsportsbar.com

BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW

Storm winds must reach 58 mph in order to qualify as a “severe thunderstorm”. It is physically impossible to urinate and give blood at the same time. FRANCESCA WOLFSOHN INVESTMENT ADVISOR AZ 480~822~8176 NY 516~395~3299

FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE You may not see fireworks, but if you can acquire the means to do what you want, when you want and how you want, everyday can be Independence Day. And yes, you can buy your own fireworks and pay for the permits to set them off. How do you do it? Do you have to live on a farm and only eat what you can grow? (Although, your life would be free of a great many stresses and not to mention health issues). Give up chocolate? (Nope, can’t do it). Give up Starbucks? (Nope don’t want to do that although, that would save a bundle). Move to a tent? Stop watching Netflix via your Wii Connection? While it helps if you were the CEO of a profitable socially responsible corporation, professional athlete, movie star or inherited a ton of money, there are other ways to accomplish this feat. Here are some commonsensical, slow and steady ways to get on the right road. DEBT, if you spend more than you make and get into debt, you’re working for the banks. Get the bank to pay YOU to use credit. Use reward cards (they give you cash awards, airline miles or other dividends) and pay them off by their due date. If you can’t pay for something when the bill comes due, don’t buy it. Pay off your loans ASAP. They are not worth it. The sooner you can pay them off, the better. The benefit of getting a tax deduction is overblown. Better to have the assets as fully owned equity and give to charity. A long-term debt impairs your freedom as much as a short-term one. Unfortunately, most consumer societies are predicated on having it all now thanks to readily available credit. Save up to pay cash for the things you really want. Did you know you could exercise at home for nothing (remember calisthenics)? Most libraries allow you to check out movies, music and books for free, as well as a long list of events, classes, workshops and trips. Check your health, home or auto insurance. If you make a call there is a good chance discounts exist to be had. As for life insurance, unless you have dependents who would be financially hurt if you pass, don’t buy it. Disability insurance is a good idea. So you’ve been told for years by saving 10 to 15 % of your annual income will lead to a comfortable retirement, NOPE. On most retirement withdrawals, including annuity income you’ll need more to pay Uncle Sam and then cover higher medical expenses in coming years. Use 1/3 as your goal. Open up a Roth IRA or 401(k). You pay taxes on the contributions, but not on the withdrawals. Use every opportunity you can to save with tax-deferred accounts. No amount is too small. Figure out how much it would take for you to live comfortably and put away enough money to get there. Get a ballpark estimate to see if you’re on track. Financial independence is possible if you strive to live below your means. Every penny counts.FOR A VETERAN INVESTMENT ADVISOR’S EXPERTISE

The Night Owl BY EVELYN ROMANS

RAW Phoenix Presents: Illuminare at Ghost Lounge I hope we’ve all been fortunate enough to experience an event or even conversation in our lives that forces us to rethink our circumstances and perspective on life. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: art, in its many veins, is a way for us as emotional beings to transcend our normal, sometimes mundane lives, allowing us to reach a state of enlightenment. I’m sure there’s a song that you love listening to that puts your mind at ease or awakens some part of you that causes an emotional response. Like a switch being flipped on in your brain, this song makes you want to dance, reminisce, love, or even cry. The person(s) who brought that song into existence is an artist.

Honky Tonk Night!

PURE COUNTRY

Karaoke Sundays

This Thursday, RAW Phoenix is connecting us with artists representing film, fashion, music, photography, hair/makeup, and performing arts. Their monthly event showcases handpicked, local artists courageous enough to withstand potential scrutiny from you, the onlooker. This month, feast your eyes on painted works by artists like graffiti master, nervek, among many talented others on various canvasses. Fashion by Martini Couture will draw your eyes to the runway, sounds by Jason Paul, Charlie Rae, and the Good Bipolars will make you move your head subconsciously, and photography by Dom Garcia and Sammy Nichs will make you want to buy an expensive SLR. Performing artists by Aerial Intensity and JoelskiithePoet will have you head tripping as they create before your eyes. So check it out and give yourself the opportunity to be illuminated. Thursday, July 14th. 7:30 pm. Cocktail attire. Cash bar. $10 tickets. Ages 18+ http://www. rawartists.org/phoenix/illuminare The Palace – International Music Party

at Filmbar

Filmbar is refreshingly different from your typical tavern in that they showcase interesting, artsy, indie, and classic films while you openly enjoy an adult beverage. That’s right—no need to sneak in your flask or forty in your girlfriend’s oversized purse. The selection of beer is extensive and the hipster ambience gives you a break from the Scottsdale scene. Their seats are comfy and the tables in the back are good for groups. Check out their website for showings.

$2 Domestic Pints $3 U-Call-It Wells and Calls Open Pool

On Saturdays at 9:30, the vibe shifts to party mode. DJentrification and guest DJs spin

international tunes that bring people to the dance floor. Forget top 40 and sample some of the world’s best party music for a change. I don’t know about you, but I’m totally digging electro cumbia… When the Palace gets poppin’ it becomes a fantastic time to people watch as you enjoy your wine and beer, or gives you the chance to school your bar mates in dancing glory. I recommend that latter—why not?! 815 N 2nd St, Phoenix, AZ 85004. Ages 21+. No cover to party. $7 Movies, $5 Matinees. http://thefilmbarphx. com/Phoenix-Film/ The Big Lebowski Party at The Sail Inn Dude. I love White Russians. I have to give this movie credit for initially making me want to try one. In a gesture of thanks to the Coen brothers for the laughs and the highly pleasant taste I enjoy from a White Russian, I am writing about this event. The Sail Inn would throw a Big Lebowski Party—it’s such a quirky little bar. Great drink prices and live band music make this venue. The owners must love this movie as much as I do because on Friday they are having a costume contest, art show, and special screening of The Big Lebowski that I’m sure will be pure, cheesy, awesomeness. Local bands, Los Guys, V Knight, and Village Idiot will perform before an audience of dudes. Be the best dude and you could win $100. Friday, July 15th. 7:00 pm. $5 with costume otherwise it’s $10. 26 South Farmer Avenue Tempe, AZ 85281

Live a Little to Indulge Bonfire is a name that derives from a high school activity that the owner would participate in. A southwestern ambiance with a little flare and the food smells flow throughout the restaurant. Happy hours runs Wednesday-Sunday 4-7pm and reverse from 10-12am. Personally, I fell in love with the potato pancakes with bacon cheddar fondue, and the jalapeno martini that was delicious with a bite! They have televisions on the wall that display pictures from different decades along with local bands on Mondays. The staff makes you feel like more than a customer; but a friend. 7210 East 2nd street Scottsdale, AZ 85251 Brain Freeze Who loves a frozen drink in this heat? Me, and I am sure you do as well. With 14 different frozen daiquiris that Fat Tuesday offer I am sure that finding one pleasing will be real easy. During their 4-7 happy hours come in and get a large frozen drink for $5.50. When I had the banana banshee it just made me want another! Fat Tuesday specializes in New Orleans style food. Try their catfish and alligator nuggets for $3. Come in and cool down with some eats and drinks. 680 S. Mill Ave Tempe, AZ 85281 “Tienes Hambre? Padres Mexican Cuisine happens to be a little cottage style place on the side of the road in Phoenix. This is a homey styled restaurant that makes you feel welcome once you enter that big red door. Monday-Friday 3pm-630pm is the best time because its happy hour of course! Cilantro pesto, diced tomatoes, and queso ranchero all topped on top of a pizza is quite fabulous, you can have it with chicken or vegetarian style for only $7.95. I definitely sipped on the best margaritas for only $3.50! On the weekends you can enjoy live salsa music and tequila Saturday! 1044 East Camelback Rd Phoenix, AZ 85014 AZ WeeklyMagazine.com

Singer-songwriter-guitarist Chris Isaak begins his third decade as one of the most distinctive recording artists of our time— and the epitome of modern cool. Isaak’s rich, knee-weakening croon channels Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison, updating the smoke-filled sound of twangy country ballads and laid-back, electric guitar-driven

Other Isaak tunes include “San Francisco Days,” “Blue Hotel” and his signature “Baby Did a Bad, Bad Thing.” His most recent album Mr. Lucky continues to expand on Isaak’s favorite subjects: love and heartbreak. The artist explains on his website: “I believe that anyone who’s ever fallen in love—or out of love— should be able to hear themselves in this album too.” Ranked #68 on VH1’s 100 Sexiest Artists, Isaak has enjoyed a second life on screen, appearing in the films Married To The Mob, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, Silence Of The Lambs, and That Thing You Do!, plus the hit TV show Friends, the HBO minise-

Lauzon is coming off a ‘Submission of the Night’ victory at UFC on Versus 4 over Curt Warburton in Pittsburgh, but not before knocking his British

“LET’S DO IT” Lauzon Quick to Accept Challenge from Heavy Hitting Guillard Just days after UFC lightweight title contender Melvin Guillard offered up the name of Joe Lauzon as a possible opponent for a fight at UFC 136 in Houston, he quickly got an answer.

opponent down with some nasty stand-up. The popular Boston area fighter has always been known as an exciting product in the Octagon and a matchup with Guillard could bring a major lightweight match-up to the show in Houston. While Guillard’s mention of Lauzon’s name was done with respect, the two 155-pound fighters could have great potential for the card.

Last week, I think Charles Oliveira’s saying he wants to fight me. I’ll fight whoever the UFC wants. If the UFC wants me to fight Melvin, then let’s do it. If the UFC wants me to fight Charles Oliveira, then let’s do it,” Lauzon said. “I’m not too picky. I’ve never told the UFC ‘no I don’t want to fight.’ If they want me to fight someone, then I’ll do it.”

By GeorGe Dickie

“If the UFC Wants Me to Fight Melvin Guillard, then Let’s Do It”, stated Joe Lauzon after Guillard’s most recent win and extremely impressive performance. In an interview with MMA Weekly, a cool, calm and collected Lauzon made it very clear that he’s more than willing to sign on the dotted line. “Melvin’s saying he wants to fight me.

It used to be that a starting pitcher was expected to finish what he began. In the 1960s and ’70s, complete games (even losses) were the norm, and “See you in the ninth inning” were the words with which many a major league manager would send his starting pitchers off to battle following the national anthem. But the dual specters of Third-World-economy-sized player contracts and career-threatening arm injuries have forced teams to become more conservative, instituting pitch counts and pulling their starters in the sixth or seventh inning. Thus, the complete game became about as common as a single-price doubleheader or a triple play. Except Tampa Bay Rays right-hander James Shields has been bucking the trend. As of late June, “Big Game James” had thrown three consecutive complete games, all wins. During that span, he surrendered just one run over the 27 innings for an ERA of a paltry 0.33 and allowed no more than five hits in each outing, just the fourth pitcher since 2000 to fashion such a streak. Two of the other three – Randy Johnson in 2000 and Roy Halladay in ’03 – went on to win Cy Young trophies. At this writing, the 29-year-old Southern Californian was 8-4 with a 2.29 ERA, teaming with lefty David Price and righty Jeremy Hellickson to form an imposing top of the Tampa rotation.
