Arizona Historical Society Museum at Papago Park

The Culture Pass, an innovative program launched by Valley arts and cultural organizations in April 2009 to provide library card holders free admission to top metro Phoenix destinations, has been reinstated for a third year. The program, which served 225,000 participants in its first two years, pairs local organizations with public libraries in Cave Creek (Desert Foothills Library), Chandler, Glendale, Mesa, Phoenix, Peoria, Scottsdale and Tempe. Additionally, the passes will be available for check out at four of the University libraries for ASU staff, students and faculty.

Culture Passes are checked out like library books at the participating city libraries mentioned above. Each pass grants admission for two people.

Libraries have a limited number of passes for each organization. Passes are available on a first-come, firstserved basis and are checked out at the library’s circulation desk. Passes cannot be reserved, renewed or requested through interlibrary loan and are valid for a one-time admission during a seven day period. Passes do not need to be returned. Simply look for the Culture Pass display when you enter the library.

Maricopa is growing up!

Moreover, there will always be some cinematic sensation. We still have ‘The Twilight Saga’ for two more installments and then ‘The Hunger Games’ is almost guaranteed to become the next movie

Sure, I buy into hype. I’m the first one to follow mobile food vendors around town and have their tweets come to my phone.

While on vacation, I have driven all over Southern California chasing Korean taco trucks. ‘Harry Potter’ is just one of those hypes that never captured my interest.

From a critical standpoint, the cinematography, special effects and storylines are worth recognizing and the acting by Radcliffe and crew outshine the ‘Twilight’ cast by a mile.

AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s Film Section! contributors Joseph J. Airdo, Randy Montgomery and Stan Robinson provided the following reactions in response to the last 10 years of “Harry Potter” hysteria.

At 27 years old, Joseph is a Walter Cronkite School of Journalism graduate with a degree in media analysis and criticism. Randy, at 34 years old, holds a Master’s Degree in Counseling and Education and works in media and marketing. And, at 64 years old, Stan is a retired First Assistant Director with more than 22 years of experience in film and media production.

Joseph: “To be completely honest, I have never quite understood the universal infatuation with the ‘Harry Potter’ film franchise. I accept it but I cannot comprehend the craze. Even my 81-year-old friend has been infected with Pottermania. Upon witnessing the enthusiasm surrounding each of its eight installments, I have been left scratching my head, recalling the copious other motion pictures that are knocked to the wayside by the wizarding world of ‘Harry Potter’ despite being more worthy of its hysteria.

In 2005, ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’ opened so strong that it robbed the far superior fantasy flick ‘Zathura’ of an opportunity to earn back its budget.

The injustice continued in 2007 with the release of ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,’ a movie that caused one of Pixar’s best animated features ‘Ratatouille’ to have the studio’s second-lowest opening weekend. And the damage has not been limited to family-friendly films, either, as ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1’ single-handedly annihilated one of last year’s best motion pictures ‘The Next Three Days.’

Having said that, I find myself a sucker for a phenomenon. That is why I have tasted every flavor of Bertie Bott’s jelly bean in existence and also why I intend to dress up as the boy wizard – complete

marvel. On the other hand, there will always only be one ‘Harry Potter’ (unless, of course, Warner Bros. opts to reboot the franchise) and I can most certainly respect its influence as a pop culture prodigy.”

Randy: “After 10 years and eight films, the decade of ‘Harry Potter’ is over. Nineteen and a half hours of our lives have been spent watching Harry and his friends learn wizardry, spells, fight villains and play ridiculous games such as Quidittich.

Terms like ‘The Golden Snitch,’ ‘Quaffles,’ and ‘Muggles’ have become part of global vocabulary.

Fans have spent countless additional hours sitting outside in folding chairs and on the floor of theater lobbies to say they

That being said, ‘Harry Potter’ has been one of my least favorite series of movies and ranks up there with my dislike for ‘The Lord of the Rings.’ These movies never made any sense to me and were always at least a half an hour too long.

“Credit must be given where it is due though; J.K. Rowling’s creativity is unmatched and the empire she built will go down in history books. She has managed to capture the attention of people worldwide; all ages, all backgrounds. Getting children and adults to read and away from video games and computers is always a good thing.

The popularity of the series will live on through DVD, merchandising and theme park attractions. The series is too popular to die. This may be ‘the end,’ but that doesn’t mean this is the last we will see of Harry, on screen or anywhere else.”

Stan: “The word ‘franchise’ has become synonymous with a movie series of films.

The longest running movie franchise that comes to mind is the James Bond films covering 30 years. With the release of “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’ (2007) and the fifth film in the franchise, the combined worldwide box office grosses for those first five Harry Potter films was in excess of $4.47 billion, surpassing the box office totals of all the James Bond films at the time (22) and the six Star Wars movies.

The source material for the films is British author J. K. Rowling’s books with the idea for them being conceived on a train trip from Manchester to London in 1990.

The books have won multiple awards, sold more than 400 million copies and Rowling had overall approval on the scripts, as well as maintaining creative control by serving as a producer on ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Parts 1 and 2.

Her own “rags to riches” life story could be source for a movie with her progression from living on benefits to multi-millionaire status. As of March 2011, when its latest world billionaire’s list was published, Forbes estimated Rowling’s net worth to be $1 billion with a ranking as the twelfth richest woman in Great Britain.

Reviewers’ Roundtable: The ‘Harry Potter’ Polemic

Admittedly, I haven’t read a single Harry Potter book. And although I find the Potter films to be visually captivating and very well produced from a production standpoint, the first six films content/story theme left me with the feeling of watching the TV series ‘90201’, centering on ‘teenage angst with magic thrown in for good measure’. It wasn’t until last year’s ‘Deathly Hallows Part 1’ where I really became interested in the 3 friends and the ultimate battle they were about to undertake. ‘Hallows’ is darker in its theme, the friends are older and more settled in each of their personalities.

Just when my interest has been piqued, the series is set to end. This one by far one of the best documentaries made to date. The emotion and drama could not be scripted. You are on the edge of your seating waiting to see what will happen to Nim next, while you become just as wrapped up in the lives of the human players as well.

Their involvement in the scientific experiment is just as complicated and makes for individual subplots worthy of their own film.” Grade: A+ Stan: “When a film, especially a documentary, can truly make one reexamine our relationship to animal life around us and our impact on them, from the common household pets of dogs and cats, animals in the ever popular zoos and sanctuaries, to sending them into space as a prelude non-risk factor for humans, and, testing in laboratories for medicines and surgical procedures, director James Marsh presents the alarmingly stirring chronicle of the chimpanzee Nim. Just as the human participants lives were changed forever due to their involved with ‘Project Nim’, this reviewer’s view of animals has been changed, forever… ” Grade: A

‘TrollHunter’ A group of students investigate a series of mysterious bear killings, but learns that there are much more dangerous things going on. They start to follow a mysterious hunter, learning that he is actually a troll hunter. In Norwegian with English subtitles. Playing exclusively at The Royale. (PG-13 – 90 minutes) Joseph: “Writer/director André Øvredal’s mockumentary “TrollHunter” is freakishly fun.

However, one may not find it easy to shake the absurdity associated

with its fairy tale premise, making the movie more humorous than hairraising. One can only hope that Chris Columbus, who has picked up remake rights, will find a way to improve upon the legend’s legitimacy in his Englishlanguage version.” Grade: C Randy: “This ‘mockumentary’ from Norway starts off like many others in the genre; with a message from the producers stating they received ‘footage’ and verified its authenticity.

While the premise and style may be familiar, the plot of a troll hunter is unique. Trolls may be more intriguing to audiences overseas, as you do not see many films centered around them here. That’s what makes this otherwise familiar film a good time.”

Such is the case with multifaceted Margaret Cho, tattooed over 40 percent of her body. She plays Teri, assistant to a lawyer, on Lifetime’s “Drop Dead Diva.”

‘Teri’s look is very funky,” Cho says.

“She wears a lot of ethnic jewelry, and a lot of prints, and a lot of color.”

Cho loves fashion, and for her personal style, shops when in London, Paris, Rome and Marrakech, Morocco.

The comedy gets wider exposure on Showtime starting Tuesday, July 19, with Kudrow playing a snarky therapist who believes in very brief sessions – conducted, appropriately, over the Internet. “ ‘My Dinner With Andre’ was a great movie,” Kudrow reflects, “but the challenge is to sustain someone’s interest if it’s just two people talking the whole time. Here, we feel like it does, even though it’s just single shots and two-shots.”

SKA Brewing Goes Full Circle

Hello again everyone!

Thanks so much for all the feedback on last week’s beer, La Folie Sour Brown Ale. This week let’s chat about Decadent Imperial IPA from Ska Brewing in Durango Colorado. I recently had a Decadent Imperial IPA on tap at Mellow Mushroom in Tempe AZ. and found myself amazed at how much complexity and character was contained within this brew.

DECADENT IMPERIAL IPA

First a bit about the brewery. Ska Brewing took roots in 1995 when beer lovers Dave Thiboudeau &Bill Graham, who were not yet old enough to drink but terribly thirsty, began brewing their own beer. It didn’t take long before a few local brew pubs began featuring Ska beers as Guest Taps and as they say, the rest is history. Medal winners at the L.A. International Beer Competition & recently here in Chandler, AZ. at the Ameri-Can Beer Festival, Ska Brewing has truly come full circle.

Alright, onto the beer. Decadent Imperial IPA is a truly complex sensation of flavors.

It pours hazy amber with a creamy yellow head and a pronounced nose of pine resin and amber malts. Big hop character, about 95 IBU’s is balanced with sweet malty flavors characterized by toffee, fruity esters and an almost chewy texture. There is no mistaking this brew for anything but an Imperial IPA. Alcohol by Volume Stands firm at 10% and this beer never lets you forget that. Again, the complexities in this beer are where it truly shines. Every mouthful is a bit different as your taste buds work through all of the flavors and textures. As the beer warms it undergoes a transformation and your pallet begins to detect a whole new range of sensory excitement.

Tastes include ever so slight hints of vanilla, banana, ripe fruit & anise.

On another note, the bottle is also quite remarkable. Its top is covered in melted red wax with a skanking skeleton on its label.

There is no mistaking it for anything else and it’s very cool.

Decadent IPA scored an 88 on RateBeer. com, but I think is deserving of a higher mark.

Okay, it sounds like a good idea, even if the press release seems more like an opportunity for the “founders” to promote themselves than anything else. Around my house, any day (and sometimes every day) is IPADay. So why do we need a specific day devoted to this “iconic style?” It seems to me that people should be free to drink what they want, when they want without feeling beholden to

a certain beer on a certain day.

All that said, why not? If you want to take a day to celebrate this hoppy style of beer, then go ahead and do it. It would be fun to see some of the great beer bars in the state go heavy on hops for one day (not that it doesn’t already happen from time to time). It would be great to see the looks on some of those who have not quite reached out to craft styles if all they could find on August 4th was various versions of India Pale Ale. It would be equally great to see at least a handful of those folks get turned on to the complexity and flavors inherent in an IPA. And it is always a good time when wine drinkers discover how special and wonderful these beers can be.

So, what am I saying? I have no idea, but I guess the message should be, celebrate IPADay or don’t celebrate it. On August 5th the only thing that truly matters isn’t whether or not you drank IPAs the previous day, but if you are embracing the changing craft culture in our state. If you are recognizing that those funny looking beers with unusual names are not going away. If you understand that the beer drinking scene is changing for the better and its time to either get on board the light rail or get under the light rail (or something like that, I can never remember how that is supposed to go).

I had the pleasure of enjoying a fine event last Thursday that featured several representatives of our local beer scene and while it was interesting to see everybody playing nice, it was even more heartening to see the number of people show up with a true interest, if not a passion for craft beer. As more and more folks get turned on the momentum of craft beer just keeps going and going. This ultimately means that I get to enjoy better beer on a more consistent basis.

So thank you to those who make every day IPADay or PaleAleDay or RussianImperialStoutDay, or whatever. It’s not about one day, it is about the ongoing quest for better beer. If this day helps that happen, then so be it. But, as for me, I’m having an IPA right now.

FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE You may not see fireworks, but if you can acquire the means to do what you want, when you want and how you want, everyday can be Independence Day. And yes, you can buy your own fireworks and pay for the permits to set them off.

How do you do it? Do you have to live on a farm and only eat what you can grow?

(Although, your life would be free of a great many stresses and not to mention health issues). Give up chocolate? (Nope, can’t do it). Give up Starbucks? (Nope don’t want to do that although, that would save a bundle).

Move to a tent? Stop watching Netflix via your Wii Connection? While it helps if you were the CEO of a profitable socially responsible corporation, professional athlete, movie star or inherited a ton of money, there are other ways to accomplish this feat.

Here are some commonsensical, slow and steady ways to get on the right road.

DEBT, if you spend more than you make and get into debt, you’re working for the banks.

Get the bank to pay YOU to use credit. Use reward cards (they give you cash awards, airline miles or other dividends) and pay them off by their due date. If you can’t pay for something when the bill comes due, don’t buy it. Pay off your loans ASAP. They are not worth it. The sooner you can pay them off, the better. The benefit of getting a tax deduction is overblown. Better to have the assets as fully owned equity and give to charity. A long-term debt impairs your freedom as much as a short-term one.

Unfortunately, most consumer societies are predicated on having it all now thanks to readily available credit. Save up to pay cash for the things you really want. Did you know you could exercise at home for nothing (remember calisthenics)? Most libraries allow you to check out movies, music and books for free, as well as a long list of events, classes, workshops and trips.

Check your health, home or auto insurance. If you make a call there is a good chance discounts exist to be had.

As for life insurance, unless you have dependents who would be financially hurt if you pass, don’t buy it. Disability insurance is a good idea.

So you’ve been told for years by saving 10 to 15 % of your annual income will lead to a comfortable retirement, NOPE. On most retirement withdrawals, including annuity income you’ll need more to pay Uncle Sam and then cover higher medical expenses in coming years. Use 1/3 as your goal. Open up a Roth IRA or 401(k). You pay taxes on the contributions, but not on the withdrawals. Use every opportunity you can to save with tax-deferred accounts. No amount is too small. Figure out how much it would take for you to live comfortably and put away enough money to get there. Get a ballpark estimate to see if you’re on track.

“If the UFC Wants Me to Fight Melvin Guillard, then Let’s Do It”, stated Joe Lauzon after Guillard’s most recent win and extremely impressive performance.

In an interview with MMA Weekly, a cool, calm and collected Lauzon made it very clear that he’s more than willing to sign on the dotted line.

“Melvin’s saying he wants to fight me.

It used to be that a starting pitcher was expected to finish what he began.

In the 1960s and ’70s, complete games (even losses) were the norm, and “See you in the ninth inning” were the words with which many a major league manager would send his starting pitchers off to battle following the national anthem.

But the dual specters of Third-World-economy-sized player contracts and career-threatening arm injuries have forced teams to become more conservative, instituting pitch counts and pulling their starters in the sixth or seventh inning. Thus, the complete game became about as common as a single-price doubleheader or a triple play.

Except Tampa Bay Rays right-hander James Shields has been bucking the trend. As of late June, “Big Game James” had thrown three consecutive complete games, all wins. During that span, he surrendered just one run over the 27 innings for an ERA of a paltry 0.33 and allowed no more than five hits in each outing, just the fourth pitcher since 2000 to fashion such a streak. Two of the other three – Randy Johnson in 2000 and Roy Halladay in ’03 – went on to win Cy Young trophies.

At this writing, the 29-year-old Southern Californian was 8-4 with a 2.29 ERA, teaming with lefty David Price and righty Jeremy Hellickson to form an imposing top of the Tampa rotation.
