presented by SKYE at SKYE Saturday, July 30 8:00pm Anthem is only three individuals reproducing all of the nuances and intricacies of a live Rush show. Dale Zapata has the same unique vocal qualities that make Geddy Lee’s voice instantly recognizable. In addition, his Alex Lifeson guitar and foot pedal work are flawless. Russell Coss shows that he’s more than adept at handling several keyboards, samplers and foot pedals on top of effortlessly working Rush’s monstrous bass guitar lines. Rob James reproduces Rush’s infamous drum work on a visually stunning replica of the Slingerland drum set Neil Peart was using around the Hemispheres tour. In the words of KDKB DJ Dennis McBroom, Rob “...channels Neil Peart”. The reproductions of the music are astounding with constant accolades of the band’s ability to sound exactly like Rush.

Bet You Didn’t Know! by Stan Robinson

Silver Screen Scoop! By Joseph J. Airdo Cartoon Network has signed an agreement with Angry Filmworks to develop a live-action feature film based on “Captain Planet and the Planeteers,” an animated television series from the 90’s about a group of young people who combine their special powers to summon an environmental superhero to battle the world’s worst eco-villains. Be among the first to get the latest ‘scoop’ from Joseph J. Airdo at Examiner.com

Interview: Writer/Director Gilles Paquet-Brenner (Sarah’s Key) By Stan Robinson In modern-day Paris, a journalist (Kristen Scott Thomas) finds her life becoming entwined with a young girl (Mélusine Mayance) whose family was torn apart during the notorious Vel’ d’Hiv Roundup in 1942. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (PG-13 – 111 minutes) Co-Writer/Director Gilles PaquetBrenner’s film presents the story with the film taking place in 1940s Paris and in present day, with a separate set of characters and looks, in essence, two films. How challenging is it to shoot two separate movies to be intertwined as one overall story? It started with the screenplay explains Gilles…

Sam Mendes was originally to direct Russell Crowe in ‘Sweeney Todd: The ‘Demon Barber of Fleet Street’ (2007). The role eventually went to Johnny Depp with Tim Burton directing!

“It’s a very difficult book to adapt in the sense that its very well crafted, good characters, and its well structured. Its all there, you don’t have to invent aspects. But, the real challenge is that with the two periods of time that intercuts between the past and the present, you don’t want to loose the audience! You want to stay fluid, so we (Serge Joncour, co-writer on the screenplay) worked a lot on the screenplay, we worked out the transi-

tions, and we worked out the pacing between the two periods of time! It worked pretty well because we didn’t change many shots in the editing room! Usually one tries different combinations on what was shot based on how it was written in the script. And Stan, you know as an AD (Assistant Director) better than anyone, when you do your homework in prep (pre-production), one can capture some pretty amazing moments on film as the cast and crew become engaged in the theme of the story during shooting. That can happen only if proper attention is given to those finer nuances of the story with the script as the blueprint for capturing it on film!” – Gilles Paquet-Brenner Read Stan Robinson’s full interview with ‘Sarah’s Key’ writer/director Gilles Paquet-Brenner exclusively online at ScreenScene.org and Examiner.com.

Reviewers’ Roundtable The following quotes were pulled from reviews written by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s Film Section contributors to present readers with a wider perspective about this weekend’s new releases. At 27 years old, Joseph J. Airdo is a Walter Cronkite School of Journalism graduate with a degree in media analysis and criticism. Randy Montgomery, 34, works in media and marketing and holds a Master’s Degree in Counseling and Education. And, at 64 years old, Stan Robinson is a retired First Assistant Director with more than 22 years of experience in film and media production. Read their full reviews of these and other movies exclusively online at Examiner. com, AZWeeklyMagazine.com and ScreenScene.org, respectively. ‘Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop’ This documentary picks up after Conan O’Brien was let go from his short gig at “The Tonight Show.” Job-

less and contractually prohibited from television, Conan decided to take his shtick on the road. We watch as jokes are created, staffers monitor ticket sales and fans ask for autographs. We see the father, the family man and the performer. We are then treated to clips from live shows filmed in Oregon, Las Vegas and other places. Sold-out dates allowed him to buck the execs in Burbank. Playing exclusively at The Royale. (R – 89 minutes) Randy: “What’s presented is standard-issue concert doc material with an insightful look at its star. Some of the jokes fall flat, but Conan’s range of talent is perfectly showcased. It’s worth a look, if for nothing more than giving Conan a little support after being treated so poorly by NBC.” Grade: B

‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’ A father’s (Steve Carell) life unravels while he deals with a marital crisis and tries to manage his relationship with his children. Also starring Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Marisa Tomei and Kevin Bacon. (PG13 – 118 minutes) Joseph: “‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’ is the perfect combination of funny and sweet. Although writer Dan Fogelman’s screenplay sometimes oversteps the boundaries of believability, causing the romantic dramedy to embody the characteristics noted in the first two words of its title, ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’ is charmingly unpredictable and fun through-and-through thanks to the innate likability of its first-rate cast and the high-energy of directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa.” Grade: B Stan: “Admittedly, this reviewer is enjoying the recent ‘adult themed’ comedies on relationships without the ‘sterile, politically correct’ cliché’s’. The recent ‘R’ rated comedies of ‘Bad Teacher’ (2011), ‘Bridesmaids’ (2011), ‘Hangover’ films (2009 & Continued on Page 13...

‘Sarah’s Key’ In modern-day Paris, a journalist (Kristen Scott Thomas) finds her life becoming entwined with a young girl whose family was torn apart during the notorious Vel’ d’Hiv Roundup in 1942. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (PG-13 – 111 minutes) Joseph: “Unlocking the door to a lesser-known piece of French history, ‘Sarah’s Key’ is a moving – if not devastating – motion picture. However, every time writer/director Gilles Paquet-Brenner’s powerful project approaches greatness through young actress Mélusine Mayance’s incomparable talent, novelist Tatiana De Rosnay’s story rips us away from the past and places us smack-dab in a present alongside a woman with a seemingly selfish obsession, thereby distancing us from any authentic emotions.” Grade: C Randy: “As historically fascinating as it is intriguing to watch, ‘Sarah’s Key’ manages to combine emotionally intense little-known historical facts with a modern-day mystery. Few know (including myself), the treatment of foreign Jews by the French government during World War II. Director Gilles Paquet-Brenner manages to successfully transform the international best seller into an Oscar-worthy film. As of July, ‘Sarah’s Key’ ranks in the Top 5 of my choices for Best Films of the year. The performances by Kristin Scott Thomas and supporting cast members should garner nominations come awards season.” Grade: A+ Stan: “When one can watch two dis-

tinct movies, masterfully intertwined for a compelling two hours, its indeed a cinematic triumph. The performance of the young actress Mélusine Mayance as Sarah in the period portion circa 1940s provides a stark view of little known facts of French history by this reviewer, while Kristin Scott Thomas anchoring the modern view of a woman driven in the pursuit of a mystery tied to that past, director and co-screenplay writer Gilles PaquetBrenner presents an award worthy film and is high on my ‘must see’ list!” Grade: B+

‘The Smurfs’ When the evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, they tumble from their magical world and into ours. Also starring Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays and featuring the voice talents of Jonathan Winters, Alan Cumming, Katy Perry, Fred Armisen, George Lopez and Anton Yelchin. (PG – 86 minutes)

theme its fairy tale component, and, the younger ones in attendance had smiles of exuberance as we left the theater.” Grade: C+

Now Playing By Randy Montgomery ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ ~ Director Jon Favreau (“Iron Man”) combines two genres; the Western and Alien Sci-Fi to create an action-packed summer blockbuster. Aliens arrive in Arizona in 1873 with the intent of taking over our planet. What they didn’t expect was an old-time Wild West standoff. Starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford. (118 minutes) Playing nationwide. ‘!Women Art Revolution’ ~ A selection at the Toronto and Sundance Film Festivals, “!Women Art Revolution” chronicles the cultural revolu-

tion of women in the arts. The movement took place during the 1960’s and 70’s, prior to which males dominated the scene. (83 minutes) Playing exclusively at Film Bar Phoenix. ‘True Legend’ ~ From the creators of “Kill Bill,” “The Matrix,” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” comes a new martial arts flick about two dueling brothers. Filled with action, swordplay and fancy CGI, this one is sure to please genre fans. (114 minutes) Playing exclusively at Film Bar Phoenix. Chinese with English subtitles.

2011), ‘Horrible Bosses’ (2011), and ‘Friends With Benefits’ (2011) present ‘adult sized’ perspectives on the aspects of relationships. Although rated PG-13, this cast of seasoned veteran actors delivers finely chiseled likeable characters as they face the challenges of marriage and family!” Grade: B

Wonder what movies we movie reviewers look forward to in August 2011? There’s Joseph’s ‘Summer in Summary’, and Stan’s ‘Most Anticipated Movies’! For Joseph J. Airdo’s list visit Examiner.com/Phoenix ~ For Stan Robinson’s list visit ScreenScene.org

Joseph: “If a summer devoid of any decent family-friendly feature films has not already left you feeling blue, ‘The Smurfs’ will certainly hammer the final nail in that coffin. Manifesting none of the charm of other recent CGI/ live-action movies-based-on-old-cartoons like ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ and ‘Yogi Bear,’ ‘The Smurfs’ is about as noisy and annoying as the song for which the little, blue creatures are known. Among other problems, the flick boasts too many pop-culture references, has too much product placement and is too doused in rollyour-eyes humor.” Grade: D Stan: “Having only a general knowledge of ‘Smurfs’, I was delightfully entertained as I learned about their history, charmed by their dedication to family and each other, and amused by the ‘over-the-top’ evil wizard with his intuitively wise cat companion. The CGI interaction with live action worked, the 3D use gave the overall

“Toy Story 3” (2010): He may have been a star of it in voice only, as toy cowboy Woody, but Hanks was part of what is sure to remain considered one of the most affecting animated films ever ... all the more remarkable for a franchise on its third round. “Cast Away” (2000): Considering his sole costar for much of the film is a volleyball, Hanks’ talent is invaluable to this saga of a courier company executive stranded on an island by a plane crash. “A League of Their Own” (1992): Hanks excels as the coach of an all-female team that he warns, “There’s no crying in baseball!” “Big” (1988): The childlike spirit Hanks exudes is crucial to this comedy about a youngster who gets his wish to grow up overnight.

In a performing arts school, where expression is stressed over conformity, there’s nothing uniform about students’ looks. In Nickelodeon’s hit “Victorious,” set in a performing arts school, star Victoria Justice’s character, Tori Vega, mirrors her own easy, slightly bohemian look. “Tori’s look is very similar to the way I dress,” Justice says. “Whenever we are picking 4.5” Ixget 2.375” out each outfit for each scene, to workad with Kris (Dangl, costume designer), who does every (producer) Dan Schneider show, and she has a great eye for color.”

Family quirks at the heart of BBC America’s new ‘Friday night Dinner’ Russian author Leo Tolstoy opened “Anna Karenina” by suggesting that “happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own Tamsin Greig, Paul Ritter, way.” Simon Bird and Tom Rosenthal Leave it to British writer Robert Popper (“Peep 4.5” x 2.375” ad (clockwise from top left) Show”) to point out, however, that happy families likewise can be unique. That’s certainly true of the Goodmans, the warm but fractious Jewish family in “Friday Night Dinner,” a new Britcom currently airing Saturdays on BBC America. The specificity of each character leaves you feeling almost as if you are eavesdropping. Adult siblings Adam and Jonny instantly regress to sparring adolescents on each visit, while eccentric father Martin keeps taking off his shirt at inappropriate moments. Wife and mom Jackie just tries to maintain order and rise above it all.

(Longtime Bruckheimer associate) Jonathan Littman and Bertram found law officers to work with us in the various cities, then we found the contestants. It’s the same process as with any reality show; you try to find interesting individuals who can be emotive.”

Food Network’s “Best of Show.” They make a great house salad with field greens, thinly sliced jicama, mandarin orange sections, pico de gallo, and a tangy-sweet honey-balsamic dressing, available as a side or as a main-dish a side of chicken. Consider trying one of their house specialties, such as Grilled Red Chile Pork Chops with ancho-raspberry sauce, garlic mashed potatoes, and seasonal vegetables; broiled Achiote Ribs glazed with a succulent barbecue sauce, served with Southwest slaw and shoestring fries. The ribs are amazing, mildly sweet without being syrupy and tender but not greasy. In place of fries, try the grilled carrots and summer squash. They also offer nine regional favorites, including bacon-wrapped Sonoran Meatloaf with chipotle gravy, garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus.

THE VALLEY’S HOT SUMMER HAS MET ITS MATCH

AT SOI 4 BANGKOK EATERY

Experience One of Old Town’s Best Patios

Full Lunch & Dinner Menu with Homemade Dressings Incredible Steaks & Niman Ranch Beef Burgers!

Happy Hour, Mon-Fri 4-7 pm BungalowBarAndGrill 4360 N. Scottsdale Rd. • Scottsdale • (480) 994-1888 www.bungalowbarandgrill.com

Taming the sizzling beast that is summer in Arizona just got a little tastier. The Valley’s hottest new Thai restaurant, SOI 4 Bangkok Eatery, is the perfect place to beat the heat with a spicy curry dish and crisp Asian beer. It may sound counter-intuitive but there’s actually some science behind why spicy foods can have a cooling affect. Spicy foods heat us up and can make us sweat. Sweat is designed to cool the body as the droplets evaporate. What’s more is that the stimulants in spicy foods releases endorphins (pleasure hormones) making people feel good, so that the hot weather doesn’t matter quite so much anymore! Soi 4 offers a variety of spicy/ curry selections including Panfried Indian bread and grilled skirt steak served with green curry dipping; Yellow curry braised chicken and fingerling potatoes served with cool cucumber salad;

Pan-seared duck breast and baby spinach served with pineapple red curry sauce; Coconut braised pork shoulder, kabocha squash, and Thai basil in tangy red curry; Slow braised beef short ribs in ‘kaffir’ lime leaves ‘panang’ curry; Charcoal grilled jumbo prawns in ‘choo chee’ red curry served with braised savoy cabbage; Stirfried crispy catfish filet, green beans, squash, and wild ginger with aromatic red curry; Clams, prawns, calamari, & blue crab meat wok-fried with Asian celery and scallions in yellow curry; Stirfried blue lake green beans and tofu in red ginger curry sauce; Stir-fried Japanese eggplant with basil and scallions in red curry and Thai black bean sauce; Charcoal grilled assorted vegetables in green curry. To accompany its savoury Thai cuisine, SOI 4 presents a variety of crisp Asian beer delivered table side in chilled ice buckets. Another popular beverage choice is milky Thai iced tea which can be the perfect cool and sweet yang to a fiery meal. For more information or reservations call 480.778.1999 or visit www.soifour.com .

There are an awful lot of characters from New Jersey who leave a bad taste in your mouth. But Buddy Valastro, best known as TLC’s “Cake Boss,” is definitely not one of them. In fact, it could be argued that his very vocation – creating massive, delicious cakes – is an attempt to make New Jersey respectable again by fattening up The Situation, thereby ending the walking abdominal’s 15 minutes of fame. But even if that is not his mission, there is a lot to like about Valastro. He took over his family’s bakery

How cool, Joe is making his own beer?” Of course Joe really isn’t making his own beer, Joe is buying a keg of beer from somebody that has allowed them to private label it as exclusive for Joe’s. This is a trend that cycles around every once in a while and it has been rearing its ugly head lately. Now don’t get me wrong, some of these beers are fine beers, it’s just the concept that annoys me.

Now on the surface this seems like a good idea because if you can get them hooked on Joe’s Pale Ale then they will have to come to Joe’s to get the pale ale. The problem is that it isn’t Joe’s Pale Ale, its ABC Brewery’s pale ale and they sell their pale ale in a bunch of other places. Given that the law requires the brewery to be listed on the tap handle, it doesn’t take too much time to figure out that the bar down the street is serving the same pale ale as Joe. Because Joe still has to buy his pale ale, it’s the same price as ABC Brewery Pale is everywhere else.

The basic idea is that a bar owner, either through vanity or some belief that it will create brand loyalty, decides to go to a brewery and allow them to put his name on one of their beers and sell it under a private label.

There are also private label bottles and cans, although you mostly see them at the larger chain stores since minimum purchase commitments are very high. The idea behind these brands is somewhat the same as

PRIVATE LABEL BEERS

Joe’s except they have the added advantage of being able to keep the price lower than the competition. This is because they are able to buy in such large quantity and cut their own deals with large breweries. In

theory, once again, this makes sense since many grocery shopper buyers are price driven. Except when it comes to items that have a good bit of brand loyalty…like beer. A Coors or Continued on page 36...

...Continued from page 34. Corona drinker will drink that brand almost every time, and are willing to pay a couple of bucks more for doing so. Studies have shown that 41% of people that purchase beer feel that it is a must have brand for them. The highest ranking category for brand loyalty is pet food at 49%. The interesting thing is that craft drinkers have it both ways, and either way hurts our friend Joe from the first two paragraphs. Many craft drinkers are loyal to a handful of breweries and if they don’t immediately realize that Joe’s is made by one of their faves, they may never even try it. And they certainly won’t be able to order it at another bar. The other side of that coin is that craft drinkers tend to be experimental and show more style loyalty than individual brand loyalty. For example, an IPA drinker is going to try whatever IPA he sees, if it looks interesting, but is also not going to order that IPA exclusively. The style drinker will cycle through various beers of his or her favorite styles at several bars; and while Joe’s may get a shot on a visit to Joe’s bar, it may never pop back up in the rotation since this drinker tends to rotate through bars as well. There are some bars that do well with private labeling. For the most part these are bars that have really gone out of their way to promote their label and make it truly identifiable with the overall brand of their establishment. However, most bar owners, like Joe, tend to slap up a custom made handle, which is frequently just a plain paddle that somebody has crafted a label for, tap the beer and wait for people to try it. They have no real financial interest in the brand over and above the other brands on tap since they pay the same for every keg. These are the ones that fail and if the beer is still on tap six months later it has become more of a vanity issue than anything else.

36

There are a handful of brewers out there that make special beers just for private labeling. This seems to be a little more successful as they will only have 10 or so handles of this in a given market, all under private labels. There is no ABC Brewery reference July 28th, 2011 - August 3rd, 2011

point so people are willing to give it a try and when it is unique become return customers. This is especially helpful if the style is an interesting variation on a basic beer flavor. For example, an unfiltered amber still has that nice middle of the road amber flavor that the middle of the road drinker will enjoy, but the unfiltered aspect provides an interesting change of pace and may even hook in the experimental craft drinker. One thing about the experimental craft drinker is that they love to find something unique that is not available everywhere. As a rule, however, private labeling isn’t necessarily good for the breweries. Some brewers will say that a dollar is a dollar and as long as they are selling beer, it’s all good. What they are missing is the same thing as Joe. If you remember Joe had a beer that he paid the same price for as if it wasn’t a private label and in doing so may have sacrificed the luster of the brand. For the brewery, they are getting the same dollar return on that keg and putting in the same amount of effort to sell that keg. Perhaps more, if they are involved in creating the tap handle for the bar. However, they lose most of the possibility of gaining any additional ABC Brewery customers from selling that keg as

So there you have it, private labels can do okay, but historically do not. Private labels, except in a few instances are not typically brand builders for the account serving them. Private labels don’t usually bring in any extra money to the bar or brewery. Finally, most consumers don’t have an interest in private labels. So go ahead, try Joe’s Pale Ale and try it again if you think you like it, but, for me, the most fun about the private labels is trying to guess what beer it actually is, so I know exactly what I am drinking. That’s a fun game to play. Until next time…

...Continued from page 36. most people that try it won’t take the time to learn who makes it, and if they do, they tend to not remember the next time. Most people get used to a brewery’s general style of tap handles, and, if the private label doesn’t have the same style, they won’t recognize it on subsequent visits. So the brewery has made a few bucks on the keg, but lost any buildup of goodwill.

MOODS ARE RISIN WITH GREEN FLASH’S SUMMER SAISON by King James Swann

Hello again, I hope you enjoyed last week’s overview of Oude Zuipers from Local Arizona brewery Papago. This week let’s lighten things up with a Summer Saison from Green Flash Brewing. The word “Saison” is a French term meaning Season. The Saison style is the name originally given to lower alcohol pale ales brewed seasonally in farmhouses in Wallonia, a French speaking region of Belgium. These beers were brewed to keep the farm workers happy during the difficult harvest season. WILL WORK FOR BEER! God I love the Belgians! Green Flash’s Summer Saison is brewed in San Diego and is a wonderful tribute to the Saison style brewed in Belgium centuries before. The beer pours hazy orange and has a thick, yellowish head that really stays put. The nose is earthy with aromas of light grains, citrus & and something else I can’t quite make out, best guess is ginger. The flavor follows the nose almost religiously with subtle hints of citrus, ginger, grain, white pepper & tangy Belgian yeast. What I really enjoyed about this particular brew was its ability to stay true to its character

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

whether cold or warming to room temperature. A summer seasonal beer should be flavorful but not overly complex. This beer delivers on both fronts. Just what the Doctor Ordered after a long hard day of grilling & watching the game by the pool! Life is Hell eh? Green Flash brewing resides in San Diego, CA. and has been in the business of brewing since 2002.They have an entire line of beers ranging from American to Belgian styles to taste and explore. Although not quite as popular as Stone or up and comers Ballast Point, Green Flash is more than worth your attention. Thanks to Distributors Crescent Crown and World Class, you can find Green Flash at better craft beer stores all over the valley. As always, please send your comments or question to me at kingjamesswann@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you. Go now young Padawan, and may the Schwartz be with you!

AMBROSIA

Ambrosia’s music can be serious, they can be playful, but always the music is rich, the harmonies are beautifullyblended, and even after twenty years it sounds great! In an early incarnation of the band, Joe Puerta and David Pack began to experiment with harmonies. After Christopher North and Burleigh Drummond joined, the four attended a show at the Whiskey a Go-Go to see an unknown, new band: King Crimson. That show would change their perception of music forever. Ambrosia is together again with the original four members. The Platinum Room at Skye is perfect intimate venue to see AMBROSIA LIVE IN CONCERT!!

More than we realize, we tend to turn our eyes away from the ugly, disturbing, and grotesque ideas, images, and language we encounter in life. We try to keep ourselves sane and sometimes innocent in this way. But here’s the thing, so much is already censored in our worlds that it sometimes keeps us from knowing the truth—no matter how disconcerting it is. Ignite Phoenix After Hours is an event held with the purpose to educate while entertain us as people in a community. Yeah, we like to think that we live in a place where we can come across a variety of different people and that we reside in a state diverse with ideas, culture, and style. For a lot of people, only a sample of this diversity is experienced without ever really digging deep enough in a person’s brain to understand how their perspective differs from yours or your friends’. This Friday at Radius without the Axis, expose yourself to presenters who feel passionate about certain topics like, Shana Ostrow’s presentation titled, “Cubicle Dweller by Day, Dick Crocheter by Night,” which is bound to be hilarious—how could it not?! There will be fourteen presenters using uncensored images and language for five minutes to discuss their topics. Now that you’re an adult, risk being vulnerable to sometimes awkward subjects in a very entertaining way and environment. Friday, July 29th. 7 – 9:00 pm. Axis/Radius Scottsdale. $10. Buy tickets at: http://ignitephoenixafterhours.eventbrite.com/

“Rusty Mexican” For a modern southern feel when it comes to a Mexican atmosphere, Canteen Tequila Bar is a place you must experience! Their menu is more of a southern Mexican style so you won’t find burritos and such, however pineapple baby back ribs for only $4 is a great deal. It’s half off all agave house margaritas and certain menu items. The ambiance is warm with the wooden decorated interior. 640 South Mill Avenue #110, Tempe, AZ 85281

“Time to Gogo” I could probably eat sushi everyday and Geisha a Gogo is the spot it would be at. I have not found better prices than here on food and drinks for a sushi restaurant. Happy hour everyday from 3-7 and all night on Sundays! Half off their house Maki rolls, appetizers, sake, and cocktails. The veggie roll is simple but they use Japanese root vegetables and it’s only $2.50. I always love a sake bomber and for $4.50 it’s easy to have more than one. They have karaoke rooms you can rent as well. Come enjoy this small but energetic restaurant! 7150 East 6th Avenue, Scottsdale, AZ 85250

“Can I have another?” I can never get enough of a place that has good Mexican food and great drink specials. I have become a fan of Salty Senorita’s for their laid back atmosphere. Happy hour is Monday-Friday between 3-7pm. Half off appetizers and $2 domestic beers, $3 Mexican and imported beers, and $1 house shots. I have to order the nachos and a Pacifico! Always hits the spot. 8011 West Paradise Lane, Peoria, AZ 85382

* July 16, 2004: Martha Stewart is sentenced to five months in prison (and five months of house arrest) for a stock sale. According to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Stewart avoided a loss of $45,673 by selling all 3,928 shares of her ImClone Systems stock on December 27, 2001, after receiving material, nonpublic information from Peter Bacanovic, who was Stewart’s broker at Merrill Lynch. Martha Helen Stewart (née Kostyra), is an American business magnate, media personality, author, and magazine publisher and founder of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. She has gained success through her intelligence, perseverance, simply put; her pure resolve to bring to fruition her visions. On the cover of the May 1995 issue, New York Magazine declared her as “the definitive American woman of our time”.

Although the media widely speculated that the situation would effectively be the end of her media empire, Stewart began a comeback campaign in 2005, with her company returning to profitability the following year. In the months that followed, Stewart drew heavy media scrutiny, including a Newsweek cover headlined “Martha’s Mess”. Notably on June 25, 2002, CBS anchor Jane Clayson grilled Stewart on the air about ImClone during her regular segment on The Early Show. Stewart continued chopping cabbage and famously quipped, “I just want to focus on my salad”.

The word “queue” is the only word in the English language that is still pronounced the same way when the last four letters are removed. When a new queen bee emerges in a hive, she “pipes” (sings a note) to incite her worker bees to fight for her if another queen in the hive needs killing.

While in confinement, she took a job and became an informal liaison between the administration and her fellow inmates. The People special, Scandals! That Rocked America stated “Some expected America’s goddess of domestic perfection to fall into terminal despair. Instead, with the drive that would make her a billionaire, Stewart took her lemon of a sentence and made lemonade. Heck, she made a lemon soufflé.”

The most valuable toy soldier in the world is the first handcrafted 1963 G.I. Joe prototype, sold at a comic book auction in Dallas for $200,000.

All-purpose master gets Hall nod Probably the truest indicator of an athlete’s greatness is how his arrival improved the teams for which he played. Such is the case with Marshall Faulk, the stellar running back for two NFL teams who is being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame Saturday, Aug. 6, in a ceremony broadcast live on ESPN. Drafted second overall out of San Diego State in 1994, his presence on the Indianapolis Colts was immediately felt, as they went from a 4-12 won-lost record in ’93 to 8-8 the following year. During his rookie campaign, he rushed for 1,282 yards and caught 52 passes for 522 yards, a performance that won him Rookie of the Year honors. With Faulk leading the ground game, the Colts would go on to the playoffs the next two years.

Faulk

After rushing for 1,000 yards in four of his first five seasons and amassing 2,804 yards on 297 receptions, Faulk was traded to the St. Louis Rams in 1999, where his all-purpose productivity (a then-record 2,429 yards from scrimmage) would help bring the franchise its only Super Bowl title and garner him the first of three consecutive Offensive Player of the Year awards. An MVP award would follow the following year.
