Summer Fun – From the Coast to the Colorado River!

and had an amazing view of the marina and river that easily outpaced the one in Cali.

Big Butte Burger Eating Competition

By Teresina Vejar

After a quick change to swimwear, my six year old son and two older children played at the indoor water park for hours basically until the pool closed at 11pm.

Valley residents with a competitive drive and an empty stomach are invited to the Big Butte Burger Eating Competition at Lone Butte Casino in Chandler on Saturday, August 27th.

On Saturday we spent the entire day on the river on Jet skis we rented from some really nice folks at Resort Rentals. The kids and I played on the river till the sun went down. That evening we went back to BlueWater Resort for food, fun and gambling. What a summer vacation! It started with one long drive from Phoenix to Los Angeles where gas was well over four dollars a gallon. We stayed in a hotel that advertised it was “just 15 minutes from Disneyland” yet the drive to the home of Mickey Mouse, Goofy and the gang took over an hour! But our eyes lit up when we arrived at our final destination; Disneyland, “the happiest place on earth.” Then again, it is also home to the longest lines on earth. Although we did have a good time spending two days in the lands of wonder, it was anything but relaxing. So we decided to kick back and hang out at the world famous Venice Beach for some fun people watching - but it was a little cold for the river rat that I am - So I had a marvelous idea, let’s ditch Los Angeles and head to the Colorado River in Parker!

My first stop was the Players Club where I got a “Player’s Club” card. I was excited to learn I got free slot play as well as a chance to win free gas for a year when I signed up. And as if that wasn’t enough, there was even a buffet discount just for having the card. I was already winning and I hadn’t even left the Players Club - it doesn’t get any better than that. If I could do it over again, I would have skipped LA and spent the extra three days on the cool Colorado River in Parker! Teresina Vejar is the daughter of Arizona Player Publisher Phil Scudella. Her motto is “Work hard and play hard.” She manages a Safeway Store in Peoria - but when she is not working; she loves heavy metal concerts, restoring classic Chevy Camaro’s and travel. She also enjoys dancing and was a member of a dance team that earned the honor - Dance Masters of America National Champions.

There, we could actually experience some real fun in the sun and on the river. We had been there a few years before and had even done some parasailing. We chose the distinguished BlueWater Resort & Casino in Parker, Arizona as our next destination. We arrived late Friday afternoon and the friendly staff at the hotel check in answered all of our questions. The hotel room was even bigger than the one in LA

The Big Butte Burger is a 10” beef patty with all the traditional fixings that will quench anyone’s appetite. Contestants are challenged to enter one of two heats that will test the will of even the heartiest hamburger fan. In the first heat contestants will compete to see how fast they can gulp down the beefy behemoth while the second heat will test who can eat the most Big Butte Burgers. Qualification for the Big Butte Burger Eating Competition is going on now, it began on August 1st in Café 24/7 conveniently located inside Lone Butte Casino just off of the 202 and Kyrene in Chandler. Here are the TWO WAYS you can qualify for the finals on August 27.

The competition to see who can eat the most Big Butte Burgers will begin at 3pm. First place in either competition will net the winner $1,000 and a championship belt. Silver Screen Scoop! By Joseph J. Airdo Mike Myers has signed on for a fourth film in the “Austin Powers” film franchise. Rumor has it that the screenplay, co-written by Michael McCullers, focuses Dr. Evil (Myers) and his son Scott (Seth Green). Be among the first to get the latest ‘scoop’ from Joseph J. Airdo at Examiner.com

At 27 years old, Joseph J. Airdo is a Walter Cronkite School of Journalism graduate with a degree in media analysis and criticism. Randy Montgomery, 34, works in media and marketing and holds a Master’s Degree in Counseling and Education. And, at 64 years old, Stan Robinson is a retired First Assistant Director with more than 22 years of experience in film and media production. Read their full reviews of these and other

Soundbite Spotlight: Voice movies exclusively online at Examiner.com, AZWeeklyMagazine.com and ScreenScene. Actor Wayne Newton org, respectively. (Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil) ‘Atrocious’ By Joseph J. Airdo In “Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil,” which is now available on DVD, Red Riding Hood (Hayden Panettiere) is training in the group of Sister Hoods when she and the Big Bad Wolf (Patrick Warburton) are called to examine the sudden mysterious disappearance of Hansel (Bill Hader) and Gretel (Amy Poehler). Wayne Newton voices Jimmy 10-Strings, a golden harp who “sings,” so to speak, for Red and Wolf. “It’s like carrying on a conversation with yourself and when you listen to it being played back with the other characters you’re hoping and praying that the emphasis was put on the right words. We recorded 2 days in Vegas with just my lines and then another 2 days in a recording session doing the music. Whomever it was that they had tried with the music, it wasn’t in my key and so [director Mike Disa] had brought along some really incredible, talented people and they were able to slow it down just a smidge to put it in a better key for me.” – Wayne Newton

Reviewers’ Roundtable The following quotes were pulled from reviews written by AZ Weekly Entertainment

The Quintanilla family was found dead. The police discovered recorded evidence. A production company acquires the confidential material and edits it into a horror movie. In Spanish with English subtitles. Playing exclusively at AMC Westgate 20. (R – 75 minutes) Joseph: “As far as found-footage horror flicks go, ‘Atrocious’ is one of the worst. When you actually think about it, there could not have been a more appropriate title. Writer/director Fernando Barreda Luna’s project lacks not only any originality but also any rhyme or reason. As a direct result of this, ‘Atrocious’ is about as scary as a kitten, exercising nothing but handheld nonsense during its final act.” Grade: F

‘Attack the Block’ A teen gang in South London defends their block from an alien invasion. Playing exclusively at Harkins Tempe Marketplace. (R – 88 minutes) Randy: “This sci-fi thriller has quite a bit of social message mixed in. At times quite funny, we watch as a group of young thugs in a London ‘estate’ (project) battle an invasion of furry, violent alien invaders. Despite the laughs and sci-fi violence, there is a point to the film about the living conditions in the London ‘blocks’ and the treatment the residents receive. This film has been made even timelier due to the current riots in London. A well-acted,

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

creative and humorous romp that will garner cult status.” Grade: A Stan: “The sci-fi genre theme has the ability to stretch or bend our reality and perceptions while integrating the chosen social mores of the filmmaker. ‘Attack the Block’ aptly intrigues us with the familiar ‘alien invasion’ backdrop, while interweaving the view of a London youth gang and their ‘block’ (territory of control) along with the aspects that bind them together. The cast of young actors, as with recent ‘Super 8’ which also featured young actors as the focal point, present well defined likable teens, and with the riots of London in prominence, the curiosity factor is indeed heightened.” Grade: B+

‘Cold Fish’

When Syamoto’s teenage daughter is caught stealing, a generous middle-aged man helps resolve the situation. The man and his wife offer to have Syamoto’s troublesome daughter work at their fish store. Syamoto soon discovers the horrific truth of the seemingly perfect couple. In Japanese with English subtitles. Playing exclusively at The Royale. (UR – 144 minutes) Joseph: “Although it seems like an awfully long swim through superfluous waters to get there, ‘Cold Fish’ is a delightfully demented dramatic thriller. Or it might be a black – very black – horror comedy, depending on your particular point of view. However, whichever way you look at it, writer/ director Shion Sono’s project is an alarmingly merciless motion picture that packs a punch – right in the stomach, might I add. Yet, while the methodical pacing works hand-in-hand with ‘Cold Fish’s’ detached tone, it has a tendency to wear on one’s patience.” Grade: C

‘Crime After Crime’ The story of the battle to free Debbie Peagler, an incarcerated survivor of brutal domestic violence. Her story takes an unexpected turn two decades later when a pair of rookie land-use attorneys cut their teeth on her case. Playing exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. (UR – 95

Continued on Page 13...

Joseph: “Yoav Potash’s documentary ‘Crime After Crime’ is sure to get even the most level-headed person heated. After all, injustice is a topic that is awfully hard to shake – especially in the face of such bigots as former LA County District Attorney Steve Cooley. However, it is also hard to shake the feeling that ‘Crime After Crime,’ which is more or less a talking-heads documentary with a sentimental twist, would probably play much better on the small screen as part of a news magazine.” Grade: C Stan: “Crime After Crime’, presented with a more dramatic edge than documentary overtones, brings front and center the true aspects of Debbie Peagler’s case of an incarcerated survivor of brutal domestic violence. As the facts of the case unfold, the inequities as well as the ideals, of the justice system is starkly contrasted as past events of her plight are revealed.” Grade: C+

‘Fright Night’ A teenager (Anton Yelchin) suspects that his new neighbor (Colin Farrell) is a vampire. Also starring Imogen Poots, Toni Collette and Christopher MintzPlasse. (R – 106 minutes) Joseph: “One thing is for sure: ‘Fright Night’ definitely does not suck. Vampire puns aside, ‘Fright Night’ boasts one of the best casts in recent memory for a genre flick – particularly a horror – and, thanks to a slight slant toward comedy, it is the rare remake that is actually better than the original (released in 1985). Everything about the film feels fresh, hip and incredibly cool, making this flick a whole lot of fang... I mean, fun.” Grade: B

‘The Future’ When a couple (Miranda July and Hamish Linklater) decides to adopt a stray cat their perspective on life changes radically, literally altering the course of time and space and testing their faith in each other and themselves. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 108 minutes) Joseph: “It is hard to believe that ‘The Future’ came from the same filmmaker who brought us ‘Me and You and Everyone We Know.’ Whereas Miranda July’s freshman feature-length effort was one of the best movies of 2005 thanks to the strange relatability of its even stranger characters, her sophomore effort may be one of the worst movies of 2011.

The only thing more perplexing than the indie flick’s analytical cat, talking moon and mobile T-shirt is the motive behind July’s madness.” Grade: F Stan: “The normal tendency to ‘fill in with something interesting’, those awkward moments of silence, when a film examines the aspects of relationships, is allowed to play on in ‘The Future’. With its metaphoric use of every day events as each person is changing and evolving, and emphasizing the underlying factor that coming out of a relationship is just as involved as getting into one, provides reflective empathy for the characters plight, ending their relationship…” Grade: C+

‘The Guard’ An unorthodox Irish policeman (Brendan Gleeson) with a confrontational personality is teamed up with an uptight FBI agent (Don Cheadle) to investigate an international drug-smuggling ring. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 96 minutes) Joseph: “The new black action-comedy ‘The Guard’s’ star Brendan Gleeson is better than the movie itself. Granted, at first glance, that criticism may not appear to carry much weight considering Gleeson is one of the most talented actors working in film today. However, the few fits of hysteria that come as a result of Gleeson’s deadpan performance and writer/director John Michael McDonough’s politically incorrect dialogue are not enough to sustain an otherwise conventional cop comedy.” Grade: D Stan: “This type of English drama with comedic undertones has always been a favorite. Brendan Gleeson as the dislikable policeman, who purports to have most of the undesirable bigoted aspects of law enforcement, aptly gains our intrigue when a black FBI agent (Don Cheadle) from the US is also assigned to the investigation. The drama, as the two men find common ground, is nicely interjected with the comedic talents of Gleeson as the uneasy alliance for the main objective of solving the crime unfolds.” Grade: B

‘One Day’

that day. (PG-13 – 108 minutes) Joseph: “‘One Day’ is a poignant portrayal of life’s tendency to constantly, tragically and ultimately beautifully change over time. Director Lone Scherfig’s romantic drama – based on the book by David Nicholls, who also wrote the screenplay – is the kind of movie that makes you think about your life and how hopes, dreams and even worries can vanish at a moment’s notice. However, due to the nature of ‘One Day’s’ unique technique, it is impossible to feel a strong sense of intimacy with the film’s characters.” Grade: B

‘The Whistleblower’ A drama based on the experiences of Kathryn Bolkovac (Rachel Weisz), a Nebraska cop who served as a peacekeeper in post-war Bosnia and outed the U.N. for covering up a sex scandal. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 112 minutes) Joseph: “Writer/director Larysa Kondracki appears to be too preoccupied with the bigger picture to bring ‘The Whistleblower’ home on a personal level. That is to say that star Rachel Weisz gives one of the best performances of her career to, ultimately, no avail because ‘The Whistleblower’s’ sights are set so high that it is impossible for it to truly resonate with an audience. The result is a self-important docudrama that falls flat and leaves those thirsting for a thriller parched.” Grade: D

story made modern with 3D technology. The last of the “blockbusters” for Summer 2011. (Rated R) 112 minutes. Playing in theatres nationwide.

‘Le Quattro Volte’ (The Four Times) “We each have distinct lives within ourselves… and so we must discover ourselves four times,” says the trailer for this quiet, reflective drama set in a small village in the southernmost tip of Italy. The story centers on an elderly goat herder. (Not Rated) 88 minutes. Playing Exclusively at Film Bar in Downtown Phoenix, AZ.

There’s hope

for hoarders in Animal Planet’s ‘Confessions’

We Deliver! www.foodtoyou.com

“Confessions: Animal Hoarding” is one of those shows that will leave you feeling grateful that Smell-O-Vision never caught on. The series, which begins its third season Wednesday, Aug. 24, is Animal Planet’s entry in the reality subgenre that brought us A&E Network’s “Hoarders” and TLC’s “Hoarding: Buried Alive.” And since these are living creatures being hoarded, it’s the

most painful to watch. If the sad faces and sickly bodies of neglected animals don’t get to you, the sight of all that waste will. That said, the season premiere is relatively low on the “ick” scale. Its two featured hoarders are Tom, who has 31 snakes, most of them venomous, and Nancy, who started out with a pair of lovebirds eight years ago and wound up with 250 of them. 4.5” x 2.375” ad

Lisa Lillien

Have you tried House Foods’ Tofu Shirataki noodles? If you like pasta but want to avoid the carbs and calories, they are a great alternative, says Lisa Lillien, better known by her alias, Hungry Girl. What started out as a regular email to 70 friends and family about foods that taste great but are also healthy and low in calories blossomed into a true phenomenon that, at last, has found its way to Sundays on Food Network. 4.5” x 2.375” ad “One day I woke up and thought, ‘There is a need for this, and I think I am the person to do it,’ ” says Lillien. Turns out she was right. Now, Lillien, as Hungry Girl, sends emails packed with low-cal recipes and dieting tips to more than a million fans daily. Of course, it’s not exactly as if she went from being a couch potato to an influential cartoon character overnight.

STEVE-O

August 25th – 28th

Steve-O has become a household name and it all started when he snatched a video camera from his father when he was 15. From there he started producing homemade skateboarding videos featuring dangerous stunts mixed with comical behavior. Steve-O’s videos made it into the hands of Jackass creator Jeff Tremaine who was working with Johnny Knoxville to create a stunt based reality show. The rest is history. When the “Jackass TV” series ended in 2002, the team moved on to “Jackass: The Movie”. Shortly thereafter, Steve-O and fellow “Jackass” alum, Chris Pontius, were given a spin-off show entitled “Wildboyz”, which aired on MTV and MTV2 and lasted four seasons. Paramount released “Jackass: Number 2” in theatres and Steve-O continued to thrill audiences with his outrageous stunts. In 2009 he competed on ABC’s hit show, “Dancing with the Stars”, and lasted six weeks, despite an injury and having virtually no dancing ability whatsoever. Next up, Steve-O was seen in Paramount’s release of “JACKASS: 3D”. He has been clean and sober since March of 2008 and lives a healthy, vegan lifestyle in the Los Angeles area...but he still has no problem stapling his balls to his leg. Showtimes: Thurs. 8:00PM / Fri. 7:30 & 9:45PM / Sat.7:00 & 9:45PM / Sun. 7:00PM. Tickets $22, $25

10 COMMANDMENTS… TONS OF GOODNESS Hello again all, I wanted to start this week by thanking everybody for all the feedback on last week’s review of Bell’s Le Contrebassiste. I had no idea so many people shared my love of Farmhouse/ Saison style beers! This week we are going to take this train of thought one step further

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” with THE 10 COMMANDMENTS from The Lost Abbey Brewing Co. First as usual, let’s chat a bit about the brewery. Co-Founded in 2006 by Brewmaster Superstar Tomme Arthur, The Lost Abbey resides in San Marcos, CA. in a building formerly used by Stone Brewing. Known for Strong Belgian & Farmhouse styles, The Lost Abbey brews by their own “10 Commandments” which can

be found at www.lostabbey. com. So what right? How’s the BEER? Well, in 2009 The Lost Abbey took home gold medals at the Great American Beer Festival for a dry hopped Saison known as Carnevale and for a sour beer called Duck Duck Gooze. Duck Duck Gooze is not currently available in Arizona, but just know that as Sour style beers go, it’s Quacking Good! The 10 Commandments takes the Farmhouse/Saison style to a whole new dimension. Brewed as an Anniversary/late spring seasonal, it’s a stronger version of their Lost and Found Abbey Ale attenuated to a much higher alcohol content. To Quote The

Lost Abbey’s web site, “10 Commandments is massive in every stretch of the brewing way possible. This is the sort of beer that will remind beer drinkers who consider themselves saints, that even saints become sinners from time to time.” Works for me! At 9% ABV. this brew has a huge mouth feel characterized by hints of dried fruit, molasses, caramel, baker’s chocolate, honey& even sticky fresh rosemary! It pours a beautiful, deep dark red-ish brown with an off white head that seems out of place on such a dusky brew. This beer is full of complexity on the nose & palate. It offers so many different flavors while Continued on page 46...

warming to room temperature that you are just going to have to try it yourself to disseminate them all. I will say this; the flavors are oddly balanced and would pair nicely with goat’s cheese and smoked salami or sake marinated duck stuffed with rosemary & thyme.

I agree with this beer’s general score of 99 out of 100 points on ratebeer.com. It is most certainly justified by this beers balance, complexity, quality and appeal even if its flavours break the boundaries of the Saison/ Farmhouse style. As always, I love hearing feedback on the brews I review & welcome your comments at kingjamesswann@ gmail.com Until next week… Keep Drinking the Good Stuff & Keep Your Stick on the Ice. Cheers!!!

The Night Owl BY EVELYN ROMANS

Third Thursday at Blue Martini Lounge Scottsdale League for the Arts cares about local art programs and so should you. Because they care about helping our community stay creative, they are throwing a social at Blue Martini in City North this Thursday. The $5 you pay to get in will be donated to local art programs so maybe it’s worth the drive up to north Phoenix on a weekday. If anything, go for the complimentary hors d’oeuvres and drink specials—I mean, why wouldn’t you check out the place chosen by the organization that holds the Scottsdale Culinary Festival every year? They obviously have taste and know where and what to use it on. Make your thirsty Thursday dirty this week and indulge in one of the lounge’s best drinks, the dirty martini with blue cheese olives. Oh yeah…you know that sounds bomb! While you sip on that dirty, remind yourself of how pure your thoughts are for going out on a Thursday simply because you believe in the importance of cultural growth and knowledge where you live. Then remind yourself of that again the next morning. Thursday, August 18th. 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm. City North, 5455 E High Street, Phoenix.

Oh, La Grande Orange! You are a delicious, little restaurant, you are! You’re even more than that—you’re a grocery too! But oh, how your parking sucks! If you’ve ever been here, then you know how sensational their pizzas are because of the organic, simple ingredients they use. Pairing such delicious pizza with an equally delectable wine from the store next door to the restaurant, is more like an experience. If you enjoy a wine from the grocery and want to have it with your meal then you can just let the server know and they’ll grab a bottle for you without a corking fee. Also, if you purchase a bottle from the market, you’ll receive a 10% discount off your meal. So this Friday’s complimentary wine time (and snacks) from 6 to 8 sounds very nice indeed, doesn’t it? Warning: get here early if you want to find parking because as mentioned earlier, it sucks. This place is pretty well-known and loved so maybe don’t tell anyone else about this event, yeah? More wine for us! Friday, August 19th. 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. 4410 N 40th St, Phoenix.

It’s monsoon season again which usually signals the end of our hellish summers. Thoughts of fall and your next Halloween costume should be floating their way to the front of your brain soon. To help bid our 2011 summer adventures and experiences adieu, Cream Stereo Lounge is throwing a sundress shindig on Saturday. We ladies had fun in our favorite sundress this summer and felt like goddesses with the tans that complimented our summer style. Soon we’ll have to store our sunny attire away but before we do that, we get to rock it one last time. Go to Cream this Saturday in your best summer apparel and enjoy specials like $5 well cocktails and house wines, $4 imports, and $3 domestics until 10. Frank and Lupe’s Mexican food appetizers will be served until 9. At 10, be ready to openly judge all the ladies in their sundresses. The most beautiful one will receive a cash prize—yes, indeed we Americans love rewarding aesthetically pleasing individuals! Dudes don’t forget your boat shoes and make sure you match the level of summer casual sexiness that chicks in sundresses exude! DJ Kilo will be on the tables spinning R&B, disco, funk, and top 40. You still have the chance to take advantage of Scottsdale’s beloved summer party time and I suggest you take it. Saturday, August 20th. 7:00 pm – 11:30 pm. 4252 North Drinkwater Boulevard. No Cover.

“How about a little vacation?” Local Breeze Patio Café is a random little spot that I find to be so comforting and open. You feel like you are on vacation even though you are just a few minutes away from downtown. “Low tide,” which is their way of referring to happy hour goes down Tuesday through Saturday 3-6pm. Their “low tide” means 20% off your entire bill, anything and everything on the menu is included. Their hummus is simply amazing and their drinks are huge! The monkey cocktail is a tropical vacation in your mouth, and I most certainly suggest that. 606 N. Fourth Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85003 “Benissimo” I feel like sometimes people forget about the little awesome places in a mall. Kierland Commons has NoRTH; which is a quaint and romantic spot. When you walk in it may seem a little crowded, but it is perfect with the lighting and interior decorating. Monday-Friday 3-6pm is when happy hour runs, and you may want to get there a little early since it tends to fill up quickly. Their bottled beers are only $2.50, well drinks are $4, and food that ranges from $3-$6. The margherita pizza is absolutely delicious, and I paired that with a Peroni beer. This modern Italian cuisine restaurant is a place that should definitely be tried out. 15024 N. Scottsdale Rd. 85254 “One More Please” I have said it before and I will say it again; I can never get enough of some Mexican food! Chronic Cantina is a place that was literally made from a garage and revamped into a laidback hangout spot. During their happy hour you can indulge on .99 cent tacos and $4.99 quesadillas. Knowing me, can’t forget about half off well drinks and beers. I always get a lot of food when I enter this place. Last time I got: two tacos, a quesadilla, and three beers for only $10. Chronic is a good place to stop by with a few friends and have some fun. Happy hour is Monday-Friday 3-7pm. 15 E. 6th Street Tempe, AZ 85281

FRANCESCA WOLFSOHN INVESTMENT ADVISOR AZ 480~822~8176 NY 516~395~3299 & THE SAGA CONTINUES UP & DOWN…UP & DOWN…UP & DOWN =AN ABUNDANCE OF IRONY The stock market just ended one of its most volatile weeks in years, prompted in part by a downgrade in the nation’s credit rating and fears of another recession. The Dow Jones industrial average fell nearly 6 percent on Monday, its worst one-day drop since December 2008. Then the index rose Tuesday, fell Wednesday and rose Thursday and Friday to end the week 2 percent lower than a week ago. As Jon Stewart noted on “The Daily Show” Monday night, the decision by Standard & Poor’s to downgrade the U.S. credit rating, which contributed to Monday’s 634-point stock market tailspin, is a situation rich with irony. Even after a current resolution was reached from the long standoff between President Obama and Congress over the debt ceiling and the fact that the S&P miscalculated our projected deficit by $2 trillion they are still sticking with their decision to downgrade America’s credit rating from AAA to AA+. The world’s largest economy now has a credit rating that ranks below Liechtenstein and is equal to Belgium and New Zealand. Many smaller countries (including the Isle of Man) still have AAA ratings. Then to top this all off, Post the downgrade we find many investors running from stocks into the very same Treasuries which were just downgraded. POSSIBLE ALTERNATIVES? MUNICIPALS; ALWAYS A GREAT CHOICE AND A NEW DEVELOPMENT IS EBAY THE NEW STOCK MARKET? Through most of last week, the average selling price increased for gold bullion – bars or coins stamped with their weight and level of purity. Even before last week’s market turbulence, investors were cautious because economic signals in the U.S. and overseas pointed toward trouble. The Dow index fell 6 percent in the week ending Aug. 6. That week, the number of gold buyers on eBay rose 11 percent compared with the year’s weekly average. The number of gold sellers rose 14 percent. My recommendation; it is always the right time to focus on the preservation of your capital. On the morning of July 18, a quick scan of the MLB standings revealed the Pittsburgh Pirates to be in sole possession of first place in the National League Central. “Is the end of the world nearly upon us?” many a baseball fan had thought about resurrection of the perpetual doormat Bucs, who last enjoyed a winning season in 1992. No, it was merely the work of an eternal optimist of a manager in Clint Hurdle and a talented core of young players, led by center fielder Andrew McCutchen. The 24-year-old Floridian was in kindergarten the last time the Pirates had a winning season, but he’s been arguably the team’s most productive player, leading them in home runs, runs scored, onbase and slugging percentage, and stolen bases. And his play in center field, one of the game’s most critical positions, has drawn raves from none other than former Braves manager Bobby Cox, who likened McCutchen to a young Andruw Jones, a 10-time Gold Glove recipient.

But Michigan was kinder to Hamlin this season — he finally got his first victory of the season at the race there in June
