During last week’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, Disney and Pixar announced development on two projects. The first, slated for release Nov. 23, 2013, is built around an idea in which the extinction-level asteroid missed Earth 65 million years ago so dinosaurs never went extinct. Soundbite Spotlight: Director / Co-Writer Larysa Kondracki (The Whistleblower) By Stan Robinson Inspired by true events, ‘The Whistleblower’ is a drama based on the experiences of Kathryn Bolkovac (Rachel Weisz), a Nebraska police officer who served as a UN peacekeeper in post-war Bosnia, uncovers the dangerous reality of corruption and exposed the U.N.’s complicity in covering up a sex scandal. After more than eight years of research and multiple meetings to get her film produced, Larysa Kondracki got the ‘green light’ and after only five short weeks of pre-production was on her way to Romania, the location that would double for Bosnia… “It’s a story that found me, I’m Ukrainian-Canadian and it’s a story that people had been talking about. I’ve been pushing this ‘big rock’ up the hill for about eight years from conception to getting it done, so definitely I found it! We (co-writer Eilis Kirwan) raised some money from the community, family and friends

in Canada, Ukrainian-Canadians, about $30,000 and spent two years traveling all over eastern Europe doing all the research and writing various drafts of the script, using everyone from high level NGO’s (non governmental organizations), to officials, and underground crusaders. As the project went from studio to studio we were doing different drafts because there are so many different ways to tell the story. We had given it to Rachel (Weisz) years ago but she was pregnant at the time. She asked a few years later if it was available, and once she was attached, Canada was on board with some of the financing.” – Larysa Kondracki

Reaction has also been overwhelming to the film’s mechanical star, The Medusa which was built for the movie and has a custom apocalypse exhaust system, built in flamethrowers and a sawed-off shotgun in the trunk. This fire-breathing menace on wheels was uninsured and unregistered. “Every time we drove it, we thought we would get pulled over. The car is so absurd, when people see it; they think you couldn’t possibly be doing anything wrong, since you are attracting so much attention.” Medusa can still be seen roaming the streets of Southern California, “It’s the only car I’ve had for a year now,” Glodell says.

Director Glodell Reflects on Shooting “Bellflower” By Randy Montgomery Production on “Bellflower,” a preapocalyptic romantic drama began with only $5,000 and without permits. Writer, director and star Evan Glodell explains, “We shot wherever we could, or wanted… for 90 days in the summer of 2008. We had no budget and no resources. Over the next two and a half years we were shooting pick-up shots. It wasn’t technically 100% finished until three weeks ago.” “Bellflower” premiered at Sundance earlier this year, where it was a hit with audiences. “When we got to Sundance, we had gotten the movie to the point where we were happy with it, but we weren’t done,” explains Glodell. While Glodell was “too scared to watch the movie with the audience (at Sundance),” the crowd’s reaction was positive.

Joseph: “On the one hand, ‘Bellflower’ is a thematic masterpiece and a technical landmark for independent filmmaking. On the other hand, writer/director Evan Glodell’s screenplay is all over the place, taking a while to capture one’s interest before eventually frustrating them with layers of confusing chronology and mercurial madness. An intensely violent sequence near the end shows promise but the story whimpers out before all is said and done.” Grade: D Randy: “A festival favorite with ‘cult classic’ written all over it. Stylish editing, camera work and really cool working props make this a step above your ordinary indie. Filming without permits or a budget, this featurelength debut is impressive, albeit a bit self-indulgent. The filmmakers have been quoted as saying ‘We made the movie we wanted to make.’ With a national release, hopefully audiences will appreciate the effort. Overall, an enjoyable wild ride.” Grade: B Stan: “With the familiar theme of fantasy becoming distorted reality, ‘Bellflower’ fledgelingly incorporates the ‘chapter sequencing’ made famous by Quentin Tarantino, jumpcut editing, and a bit sloppy at times with basic production values like dust specks on the lens and inconsistent exposure settings from shot to shot lacking, the independent effort of filmmaker Evan Glodell and his team is duly noted and will improve with experience.” Grade: C‘Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark’ A young girl (Bailee Madison) sent to live with her father (Guy Pearce) and his new girlfriend (Katie Holmes) discovers creatures in her new home who want to claim her as one of their own. (R – 99 minutes) Joseph: “Writer/producer Guillermo del Toro’s remake of the 1973 made-for-television movie ‘Don’t be Afraid of the Dark’ may have well been marketed under R.L. Stine’s ‘Goosebumps’ heading. That is not to say the new R-rated horror flick should be viewed by children. After

all, it is bloody, violent and downright dark (for lack of a better word). However, while it is definitely fun, ‘Don’t be Afraid of the Dark’ is too silly to be scary yet too funereal to be funny.” Grade: C Randy: “I expected so much more from Guillermo del Toro. Although he does not receive the ‘directorial’ credit for this film, he was involved in the production. Unfortunately, the end product is uninspired, unoriginal and – despite a few good tense moments and jump scenes (and some good cinematography) – quite dull. We’ve seen this ‘haunted house’ story time and time again and this creation gave us nothing new.” Grade: CStan: “With the 1973 TV movie, the source material for this big screen version, a very distant memory, I was entertained by the humor, reacted to the ‘bump scares’, and the cast, notably Bailee Madison at 10 years old with 2007’s ‘Bridge to Terabithia’ among my favorites, ‘Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark’ did remind me of how intriguing the horror/scare genre can be.” Grade: C+

‘Life, Above All’ Just after the death of her newly born sister, a 12-year-old girl learns of a rumor that spreads like wildfire through her small, dust-ridden village near Johannesburg. In Sotho with English subtitles. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (PG-13 – 100 minutes) Joseph: “‘Life Above All’ is a sad and powerful drama. However, there is such a thing as being too sad and too powerful. Granted, when tackling South Africa’s AIDS epidemic, one cannot be too serious. However, director Oliver Schmitz is not quite subtle enough with the sentimentality, manipulating moviegoers as opposed to allowing them to feel for themselves. On the other hand, those feelings are still sobering, regardless of the mode of their evocation.” Grade: C Stan: “As compelling as South Africa’s AIDS crises is, and the

theme of living life above all else a central theme, the poignancy of key moments are diminished as the mindset of ‘preaching to the choir’ seems forever present. A redeeming factor, the cast and notably the very young actress Khomotso Manyaka in the lead, transcend the inequities as ‘Life, Above All’ reminds us of our humanity and will to survive.” Grade: C

Joseph: “Writer/director Larysa Kondracki appears to be too preoccupied with the bigger picture to bring ‘The Whistleblower’ home on a personal level. That is to say that star Rachel Weisz gives one of the best performances of her career to, ultimately, no avail because ‘The Whistleblower’s’ sights are set so high that it is impossible for it to truly resonate with an audience. The result is a self-important docudrama that falls flat and leaves those thirsting for a thriller parched.” Grade: D Stan: “With the theme of ‘whistle blowing’ prominent in films, notably ‘The Informant’ (2009) and last year’s ‘Fair Game’ (2010), writer/ director Larysa Kondracki presents the basic formula in fine form. Rachel Weisz as the small town police officer with personal issues of her own, thrust into the international arena as a UN peacekeeper and deciding to right a terrible wrong, takes hold and doesn’t let go. A scene of the massive lobby of the UN complex that literally dwarf’s Weisz’s character when she enters, sets the tone psychologically for the power of the system she’s up against…” Grade: B

Maybe it’s penance for all those “World’s Fattest Man/Woman/Teen” specials that seemed to be all over its lineup a few years ago. Whatever the reason, TLC seems to have abandoned the freak-show approach to plus-sized people in favor of portraying them as ... well, people. The latest example is the three-part series “Big Sexy,” airing on consecutive Tuesdays starting Aug. 30. The show follows five women working in, or aspiring to work in, the fashion industry in New York. They’re all big, and they’re all beautiful. And they’re all fighting for acceptance by the fashion world, the world in general and on occasion, their own selves. Steve-O has become a household name and it all started when he snatched a video camera from his father when he was 15. From there he started producing homemade skateboarding videos featuring dangerous stunts mixed with comical behavior. Steve-O’s videos made it into the hands of Jackass creator Jeff Tremaine who was working with Johnny Knoxville to create a stunt based reality show. The rest is history. When the “Jackass TV” series ended in 2002, the team moved on to “Jackass: The Movie”. Shortly thereafter, Steve-O and fellow “Jackass” alum, Chris Pontius, were given a spin-off show entitled “Wildboyz”,

Poor Tyler Florence; he seems to be spending an inordinate amount of time chasing trucks and looking for handouts. Florence, best known for his television shows “Food 911,” “How to Boil Water” and “Tyler’s Ultimate,” has taken to the road for another season of “The Great Food Truck Race,” airing Sundays on Food Network. There’s something uber-American about food trucks. It’s like having the drive-in come to you. And our current curiosity for a wide variety of cuisines has opened the door for entrepreneurs to try creating specialized mobile menus. After all, nothing says “America” like Korean BBQ out of the back of a truck. “I really think there is an American dream for everybody,” says Florence from his home in Mill Valley, Calif. “The old model of raising $4.5 million is really intimidating to most people. Whereas the food truck model is kind of interesting because if you can raise $5,000, you can get four wheels.”

BEER! MODERATE BEER CONSUMPTION FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE From time to time we enter the discussion about whether or not beer has any real health benefits. When we do, we always do our best to be able to cite legitimate publications and research that tout the advantages of moderate drinking. In case you missed the key word…it is MODERATE. Then we discovered that a tiny microbrewery and distillery in Pretoria, South Africa had put together a pretty good list. So let’s take a look at this list and maybe you can use something off of it the next time you want to slip out for a couple of beers. Medical studies have over the years consistently demonstrated that moderate consumption of beer can be part of a healthy lifestyle.

1. Drinking beer is good for your liver! Drinkers of beer can get rid of poisonous heavy metals like lead and copper up to five times August 25th, 2011 - August 31st, 2011

Analysis can show how much of these good compounds are in beer- but can it be absorbed (called bioavailability) by humans and hence have a positive effect on health? Yes! The malt-derived antioxidant ferulic acid is 100% absorbed by humans (compared to 11-25% absorption of ferulic acid from a tomato). The total level of antioxidants in the blood increased significantly after just a

single glass of ale, again proving that antioxidants in beer are well absorbed (Ghiselli et al 2000) Not that any person in his right mind Continued on page 45...

3. It prevents cholesterol from oxidizing. Hop compounds xanthohumol and quercetin, both strong antioxidants are very effective in their ability to prevent LDL (the bad form of cholesterol) from oxidation. When LDL is oxidized it will be laid down on the artery wall causing them to narrow, thus increasing the chances of blockage and heart attacks (Miranda et al 2000). Antioxidants are thought to be able to quench and inactivate the free radicals, which may cause the types of cellular damage that can lead to both cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer. 5. It boosts vitamin B6; B12; folate and mineral levels. If compared to wine and spirits, beer is the only beverage that contains significant levels of vitamins. High homocysteine (Hcy) levels in the blood are associated with increased risk of CVD. Vitamins like B6; B12 and especially folate (all naturally occurring in beer) are now recommended as part of doctors’ orders to be taken daily to control elevated levels of Hcy (Walker, BRI, 2001). The minerals in beer come from both the malt and the brewing liquor. The beneficial ratio of potassium to sodium is particularly important in relation to cardiovascular disease. 6. Keeps homocysteine (Hcy) levels low. Van der Gaag and his colleagues found that drinking wine and spirits increased serum Hcy levels, whereas, counteracted by folates and vitamin B6, beer

consumption had no influence. A clear case of beer should be first for thirst! 7. Drinking beer boosts your soluble fiber intake and lowers cholesterol. One of the most effective forms of soluble fibre for lowering cholesterol is betaglucan, which is the predominant form of fiber in beer. Beers with high malt content like craft beers may provide up to 30% of the recommended daily fiber intake (Gromes et al 2000). 8. Drinking beer help in combating cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and other immune system attacking diseases. Hops contain compounds that are unique and rare in nature –like prenyl flavonoids (8PN) which are phytoestrogens that are natural plant based compounds, which mimics the natural estrogens in the body (Bingham et al 1998).

9. Beer ensures healthy bones. Beer has a nutritional benefit that promotes healthy bones and connective tissue (Dr. Jonathan Powell, Kings College, London). Because of the brewing process, silicon is leached from barley grain in a form that is readily accessible to the body. 10. Beer protects against gallstones. Prof. Oliver James, from the school of clinical medical studies at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, says that beer protect against gallstones, kidney stones and the bacterium Heliobacter pylori, which is directly linked to stomach ulcers and cancer. 11. Hoppy beer protects against cataracts. Certain hop flavonoids, in particular xanthohumol and its isomerised form isoxanthohumol, can show positive effects against heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, osteoporosis, cataracts and certain forms of cancer. 12. Beer promotes sleep. A famous vitaminologist Professor Steep from Germany prescribes beer (not drugs) for insomnia. Two vitamins, lactoflavin and nicotinic acid that are present in beer are the secret weapons that promote

sleep. The same two vitamins also speed up bone degeneration after a fracture and prevent low blood counts. Hops in beer itself are a natural sedative that also promotes sleep. 13. Beer reduces risk of thrombosis The flavonoids that are present in roasted malt, also to a lesser extent in hops and barley, prevent blood platelets from clamping together –making the blood less sticky – therefore decreasing your risk of blood clotting that can cause heart attacks or thrombosis. Wow…that was a pretty exhaustive list. We may not know the beers of Drayman’s, but we like the way they think. Lots of big words, but the gist of it is…there are health benefits to drinking beer in moderation. So we recommend that you cut this article out and keep it wherever you keep your beer. That way you always have a reminder of the benefits of beer. Sinhere in Arizonaso, so I thought we should keep to the lighter and more refreshing side of IPAs for this week’s article. Having said so, my choice has fallen upon Port Brewing’s Wipeout IPA. As always, let’s first chat for a bit about the brewery. Port Brewing opened its doors in early 2006 as an offshoot of the highly successful Pizza Port brewing/ restaurant chain. The idea for Port Brewing was sparked when Stone

Brewing announced they would be expanding and therefore leaving their old facility in San Marcos CA. in favour of bigger digs in Escondido. Pizza Port owners Vince and Gina Marsaglia & new partners Tomme Arthur & Jim Comstock immediately acquired Stone’s old space and within a year were producing 16 different brews! In addition, the brewery was named 2007 Great American Beer Festival Small Brewery of the Year, and Tomme, Small Brewer of the Year. Just six short months later, Port Brewing and Tomme were again honored as Champion Small Brewery and Small Brewer at the 2008 World Beer Cup competition, one of the few breweries ever to win all four honours back to back. The rest as they say is history! Tasty History! I would have paid far more attention as a junior scholar had my history teachers given me this kind of education! As the Wiseman Homer Simpson once said: “Alright, brain! You don’t like me and I don’t like you, but let’s just do this and I can get back to killing you with beer.” Indeed! Now, on to the Beer! As you might have guessed, Wipeout IPA is a west coast style IPA brewed for drinking after a long hard day of surfing, or any other activity that’s takes a lot out of you. You know, activities such as listening to your

boss rattle on, or that lawn you keep swearing you are going to mow? It’s quite refreshing as IPAs go; big bitter citrus flavors hit your pallet first followed by a touch of pine resin and just a hint of malt to smooth things over. Following the west coast style edict, the finish is crisp, dry and grassy. From the tap the beer pours golden blonde with an off white head and nice lacing as the glass begins to empty. At 7.0% ABV. and 78 IBUs this brew could almost be considered an Imperial but its lighter texture & citrus hop flavors make for a truly thirst quenching experience. Scoring an impressive 99 out of 100 on Ratebeer. com, Wipeout IPA deserves every tasty point as I’m sure you will agree once you have quaffed it. Great food pairings will include spicy hot wings or a burger smothered in BBQ sauce, cheddar cheese & bacon. Yes I know, everything goes with bacon but I just couldn’t resist! Sugar Shack will be donating a percentage of their evening sales to the foundation so make sure to at least stop by on your way to the club for a good cause. Flickas Baja Cantina has just that, a beach style feel with the painted aquarium on the wall and surf boards for wall decoration. They have happy hour MondayFriday from 11am-7pm with different specials each day. $2.50 coronas are all day every day, and $4 wells. During the week Flickas ranges from $3 cheese burgers, .40 cent wings, $2.00 onion rings, and a complimentary buffet on Fridays from 6pm-7pm. With over two decades of evolution, it’s hard to imagine what improvements EA Sports could possibly add to its long-running Madden franchise. Since the sport itself – and by default, the gameplay – has never really changed, the game must begin to include a deeper look at football, from its traditions and presentation to the behind-the-scenes management and team development. This year’s gridiron offering features a variety of minor changes and some pleasant additions that fans have been clamoring for. “Madden NFL 12” is bringing the best animations and graphics to date, giving the game a more realistic feel. From the team run-outs and mascots to the uniforms and helmets that wear down and get dirtier throughout the game, the attention to visual details will have you confusing the game for the real thing.
