then suddenly we had to be put in the most vulnerable situation with each other possible. We loved each other so much that it genuinely felt like we were having these weird sexual experiences with our friends. But I think that we would be much better at it, now.

By Joseph J. Airdo

Randy Montgomery, AZ Weekly Film Critic

Listen to Joseph J. Airdo’s “Movie Maverick” radio segment, every Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. during “The Daily Blender with Jeffry O’Brien” on KBSZ - NBC 1260 AM and 96.1 FM

After Disney’s “The Lone Ranger” remake reached a rumored $240$275 million budget last month, the studio considered hiring a cheaper director or scrapping the project entirely. However, director Gore Verbinski last week proposed a rigid and reduced $215 million budget – which is still $15 million more than the Mouse House had hoped – and actor Johnny Depp, who is set to play Tonto, refuses to remain attached without Verbinski at the reins. Soundbite Spotlight: Actress Lindsay Sloane (‘A Good Old Fashioned Orgy’) By Joseph J. Airdo In “A Good Old Fashioned Orgy,” Lindsay Sloane stars as one member of

an intimate group of friends who agree to participate in an orgy with one another in an effort to go out with a bang, so to speak, at a Hamptons estate which was home to many an infamous themed house party before being put up on the market. “We shot [‘A Good Old Fashioned Orgy’] in North Carolina, were there together for 2 months – every single day, all day long – and shot all of the sexual stuff during the last week of [production]. By the time we shot the orgy, it was so uncomfortable because we had grown so close and

“I feel like that was our practice run and the next time would be smooth sailing. We honestly all became like family shooting this movie. It was really intimate for obvious reasons and for not obvious reasons, just because of the hours and the situations we were put in. So, by the time we got to ‘Horrible Bosses’ – which we shot after ‘A Good Old Fashioned Orgy’ – [Jason Sudeikis] felt like a brother to me; which is weird because I humped him in this movie. So, I guess he is a brother who is still OK that I hump.” – Lindsay Sloane Read Joseph J. Airdo’s full interview with “A Good Old Fashioned Orgy” actress Lindsay Sloane exclusively online at Examiner.com.

‘Creature’*

The following quotes were pulled from reviews written by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s Film Section contributors to present readers with a wider perspective about this weekend’s new releases.

In the backcountry of Louisiana, a group of friends unearth a terrible secret that unleashes a monster from the depths of the swamp. (R – 95 minutes) *Not screened for review.

At 27 years old, Joseph J. Airdo is a Walter Cronkite School of Journalism graduate with a degree in media analysis and criticism. Randy Montgomery, 34, works in media and marketing and holds a Master’s Degree in Counseling and Education. And, at 64 years old, Stan Robinson is a retired First Assistant Director with more than 22 years of experience in film and media production. Read their full reviews of these and other movies exclusively online at Examiner. com, AZWeeklyMagazine.com and ScreenScene.org, respectively.

ing. When drama takes center stage, the film feels cold and distant thereby impairing interest.” Grade: C Stan: “The common pitfall many of the ‘faith-based’ movies of ‘preaching to the choir or non choir’ with a heavy handed message, works fairly well with an insightful message while comically treated. When attempts to take the ‘Higher Ground’ with drama to emphasize the underlying theme, it alienates us with feelings of pretentiousness firmly taking hold…” Grade: D+

‘Contagion’** Doctors around the world race to find a cure for a rapidly spreading virus that kills within days. Starring Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Winslet. (PG-13 – 105 minutes) **Screened after deadline.

‘Higher Ground’ A fundamentalist’s (Vera Farmiga) lifelong struggle with tenets of her church comes to a head in the wake of a tragedy involving her best friend (Dagmara Dominczyk). Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 114 minutes) Joseph: “Actress Vera Farmiga’s directorial debut ‘Higher Ground’ is a comically insightful yet honest look at religion that eventually falls from grace. Farmiga’s effort starts off strong but its tone slowly shifts as writers Carolyn S. Briggs and Tim Metcalfe’s screenplay – based on Briggs’s memoir ‘This Dark World’ – transposes ‘Higher Ground’s’ priorities. When comedy is its focus, the movie is as intimate as it is entertain-

‘Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star’* A small-town grocery bagger (Nick Swardson) believes he has found his true destiny when he discovers that his conservative parents were once porn stars. (R – 96 minutes) *Not screened for review.

‘Inside Out’ Released from prison, a man (Paul “Triple H” Levesque) must protect his best friend (Michael Rapaport) from a crime boss. (PG-13 – 94 minutes) Joseph: “Do not be fooled by ‘Inside Out’s’ misguided marketing campaign; WWE’s latest major motion picture is less about action than drama. Moreover, said drama is hardhitting – perhaps even more so than any action could have been – making for an exceptionally compelling story. Continued on Page 10...

Bet You Didn’t Know! by Stan Robinson

Joseph: “‘People v. The State of Illusion’ is guilty of first-degree boredom. And that is a tragic injustice considering the message writer/ producer Austin Vickers attempts to relay via the film is one of masterful motivation, especially because – unlike other docudramatic efforts that share its hypotheses – ‘People v. The State of Illusion’ does not suggest that we possess some magical superpower. However, all of the optimism in the world could not make these talking heads even remotely interesting.” Grade: F

With the sci-fi space thriller ‘Apollo 18’ now playing, Tom Hanks earned his third straight Oscar® nomination in 1996 for his role in ‘Apollo 13’ Having said that, ‘Inside Out’ never quite picks up enough steam to satisfy its intended audience and instead relies on a fairly weak moral to meet the moviegoers’ emotional needs.” Grade: C

‘Magic Trip’

a collection of clips from someone’s poorly-shot home movies much less something that is even remotely historically significant. On the other hand, those who have been there and done that may enjoy reminiscing about their badly-behaved years.” Grade: D

‘People V. The State of Illusion’ Former attorney Austin Vickers explores the science and power of perception and imagination. Playing

Directors Alex Gibney and Alison Ellwood present footage culled from a road trip to the 1964 New York World’s Fair, which author Ken Kesey and the Merry Band of Pranksters made while on drugs. Playing exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. (R – 107 minutes) Joseph: “‘Magic Trip’ is likely the closest thing to a time machine we will ever see but that still does not make it a very good movie. After all, there is a reason that this documentary – made in 1964 – was never released until now. And that reason is that ‘Magic Trip’ is little more than

Stan: “‘People V. The State of Illusion’ reminded me of the basic principal that our professor in film school said of a movie, to entertain, educate, or enlighten the viewer to elicit an emotional response. As the various notables, and there are quite a few, presented ideologies on perceptions with the premise of the film centering around a man’s stay in prison, it stimulated my examining one of my favorite quotes “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so” (William Shakespeare). If one is in the mood for some ‘serious thinking’ Austin Vickers’ film provides it…” Grade: B-

Randy: “Not a bad film by any means and Andy Lau is a great actor. I just can help but think how similar all of these martial arts period pieces are. Beautiful scenery and fun action sequences keep the long running time of 131 moving along at a brisk pace. Some interesting historical background and view of the early 20th century life in China adds to the story. I didn’t see its predecessor, which was Jet Li’s breakout role, but this one should stand on its own. Couldn’t we all use a bit of spiritual enlightenment?” Grade: B

‘Warrior’

‘Shaolin’ Director Benny Chan’s epic is filled with martial arts and plenty of action to keep audiences awake and on their toes. Despite a reported budget of $29,000,000, this Chinese film (in Mandarin and Cantonese) has received only a limited release in the United States. Starring Andy Lau, the plot follows a man and a group of monks/Shaolin masters that must fight off warlords to save the people of their region. (R – 131 minutes) Playing exclusively at Film Bar Phoenix.

Joseph: “An admirable cinematic effort to say the least, ‘Warrior’ is an emotionally gripping story whose sights are set on something far deeper than a physical fight. Granted, ‘Warrior’ – for the most part – adheres to the sports drama formula right down to the melodramatic manipulation. However, as the events both in and out of the ring unfold, the viewer is overcome with a sense of stimulating spirituality that forces them to their feet – not as a result of the external battle but rather the internal one which it remarkably represents.” Grade: B Randy: “Warrior” is deserving of all of the praise it will receive come awards season. While the premise may be a bit reminiscent of “The Wrester” or “The Fighter,” this Mixed Martial Arts flick features outstanding acting and some unique plot development. Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton are two of the finest actors of the decade, yet their work is not widely known to American audiences. “Warrior” should make these two household names here in the United States.” Grade: A+ Stan: “Although a lover of most sports and played many throughout my years, boxing or its derivatives I feel is barbaric. And, faith-based themed movies are a turn-off, as they tend to be preachy while clouding a solid plot or theme. Setting aside the mixed martial arts in the film (which has a huge following) and the glaring faith-based clichés, the drama of a father (Nick Nolte) and his two sons (Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton) at odds with each other and each dealing with private issues of their own, rises to

the surface of ‘Warriors’ for a compelling story of family reconciliation.” Grade: BWonder what movies we movie reviewers look forward to in September 2011? There’s Joseph’s ‘Fall in Summary’, and Stan’s ‘Most Anticipated Movies’! For Joseph J. Airdo’s list visit Examiner.com/Phoenix ~ For Stan Robinson’s list visit ScreenScene.org

Bonus Feature: Actor Victor Garber (‘The Entitled’) By Joseph J. Airdo In “The Entitled,” a young man plans the perfect crime to help his struggling family – collect a healthy random of $3 million from three wealthy men by abducting their socialite children. Victor Garber plays one of those men – the one the actor himself says goes through the biggest emotional upheaval.

Garber says that he would give anything to reprise the character of Jack Bristow if J.J. Abrams’s espionage drama “Alias” were to ever make the leap to the big screen. However, the actor admits that everyone has essentially moved on in their careers. Instead, Garber will settle for working with star Jennifer Garner’s husband Ben Affleck on “Argo,” based on the real-life story of a covert operation to rescue six Americans from Iran. “It is a great script and a pretty amazing story,” says Garber, noting that his diverse Filmography has encouraged many filmmakers to take a chance on him. “I am fortunate that I have been able to do a lot of different things over my career. I am maybe one of the busiest people in the profession because I do tend to keep working. And I love it.” Read more from Joseph J. Airdo’s interview with actor Victor Garber and his “The Entitled” costar Kevin Zegers exclusively online at Examiner.com.

“I had never done that on film before and I wasn’t sure how to do it or if it was going to work,” explains Garber, noting the experience taught him confidence in himself as an actor. “I now know that I can summon that power in me when I need to. Just like in real life, you don’t know what’s going to happen in the next moment. The challenge is being as rooted in the moment that you are in as possible.”

Rancho Pinot by Chef Rachel Albert

Rancho Pinot, a locally owned and operated restaurant, has been wowing valley residents with fresh, healthy, seasonally-inspired meals for the past 17 years. Owner and head Chef Chrysa Robertson started the first Phoenix chapter of Slow Food International, an educational organization dedicated to the pleasures of the table and to the preservation and sustainability of regional culinary and food producing traditions. Today, she carries on the same tradition that put her restaurant on

every “best of” list in the Southwest and nationally in Gourmet and Food & Wine magazines. Her restaurant serves innovative, fresh, and flavorful salads, roasted and grilled vegetables, incredibly fresh seafood, tender beef, poultry, and pasta dishes. If they have them on menu, try the Watermelon, Moroccan olive, avocado, feta, and green salad with toasted pepitas and champagne vinaigrette and the endive, arugula, walnut, grape, and celery salad with maytag blue cheese and sherry vinaigrette for starters and the Hawaiian Ono entrée. You won’t be disappointed.

Rachel Albert is a natural foods chef, cooking instructor, freelance food and health writer and author of The Ice Dream Cookbook: Dairy-Free Ice Cream Alternatives with Gluten-Free Cookies, Compotes & Sauces and co-author of the award-winning book, The Garden of Eating: A ProduceDominated Diet & Cookbook. She leads group and private classes, cooking parties, kitchen coaching sessions, and healthy shopping tours in the Phoenix metro area. Check out her blog: www.TheHealthyCookingCoach.com

Rancho Pinot is located at 6208 N. Scottsdale Road in the Lincoln Village shops between Lincoln and McDonald Drives, just North of Rose Lane on the West side of Scottsdale Road. Look for Trader Joe’s and Fogo de Chao Restaurant. You’ll find it in the NW corner of the shopping center, next to My Sister’s Closet.

Adam Richman wants you to know he is perfectly fine. The star of “Man vs. Food Nation,” airing Wednesdays on Travel Channel, is a little sensitive about his health when asked, taking great exception when reporters wonder how he avoids having a cardiologist on speed dial. After all, week after week, we see him chow down on great gobs of delicious gunk – and not much of it looks healthy. But he doesn’t find his mortality even slightly amusing. “People are very cavalier about it,” says Richman while atop an elliptical machine in a Rochester, N.Y., hotel gym. (He had just finished filming a NASCAR-related episode in Watkins Glen.) Of course, the rest of us should find that rather funny, when his show tends to glorify eating all sorts of calorific foods in some very entertaining time challenges. Somebody somewhere probably has to sign a waiver.

Spice up Your Love Life This Summer By Kristen Barrett It’s hot and sticky outside and getting down may not be on your mind, but it’s important to work on your love life throughout the year. Sometimes it can be hard to communicate what you would like regarding your relationship and romantic encounters, but talking about them is the first step to figuring out what gets your partner in the mood. If it’s uncomfortable to start the conversation, make it fun and light (you can use this article and blame us if it doesn’t go as expected!) Here are a few basic conversation starters that will surely lead to more interesting topics: • What are you most proud of in our relationship? • What’s your biggest turn on? • What’s your definition of a “quickie”? Romance stores like locally-based Fascinations can take your love

life from “blah” to “baboom!” The naturally lit and welcoming atmosphere is ideal for couples venturing into playful toys or romantic massage oils and candles. A fun surprise can go a long way. Put a sexy note in your partner’s lunch bag or send a sweet text randomly in the afternoon to let the other know you’re thinking of them. A fun erotic cookbook called Intercourses (by Martha Hopkins and Randall Lockridge) allows partners to spend an evening cooking up sensual delicacies that highlight aphrodisiac ingredients that you might never have realized, like basil, rosemary and more! Just walking around the Fascinations store will bring some fun, sexy ideas to light. From a sexy outfit to a fun feather tickler, the store offers unique items that will excite your love life! It’s easy to get distracted with the day-to-day issues of work, family and responsibilities, so break the routine once a week and do something fun with your mate. Play a sexy board game on Sunday evenings, or go on a full-blown date once a month. It’ll do wonders to your relationship and help you connect on a whole new level. AZWeeklyMagazine.com

A native of Chicago, IL, Sebastian Maniscalco grew up with comedy in his blood. After earning a degree in Corporate Organizational Communications from Northern Illinois University, Sebastian realized his passion for stand-up comedy and moved out to Los Angeles. While working as a waiter at a Four Seasons in Beverly Hills, Sebastian spent every free night performing at local clubs, bowling alleys and bars. Sebastian remembers being so bad during his first stand-up act that the audience jeered him off the stage by screaming, “Sandman! BEER! CRAFT IN A CAN Ever since the folks at Oskar Blues in Lyons Colorado put the first craft beer into a can, back in 2002, interest in canned craft beer has increased rapidly. Less than eight years later, more than 70 United States breweries have embraced canning their beers. Some, like Big Sky and New Belgium can beers that are already popular in bottles; while others, like Oskar Blues offer their entire line only in cans. Some canned beers are so popular that it creates an incredible demand. Ska Brewing launched their Modus Hoperandi in both cans and bottles, but quickly dropped the bottled product due to high demand for the cans and insufficient production to accommodate both packages. So what makes cans so popular? There are a variety of reasons. First and foremost is quality. Cans are the best possible vessel to preserve freshness in craft beer. The two biggest enemies of beer are oxygen and light. Cans prevent both of these enemies from touching the beer far better than bottles do. The result is a beer that maintains its freshness longer and allows the drinker to better taste what the brewer created. As if that weren’t enough, cans are also perfect for just about any occasion. We spend a lot of time involved in outdoors activities in Arizona, and nothing is better than craft beer in a can for the outdoors. Whether camping, boating, playing golf, hanging around at the pool, canned beers are just flat out better. Some places, lakes and public swimming pools come to mind, don’t even allow bottles, so cans are the only choice. In those situations, why not bring the best possible beer? Even when there is an option to bring bottles, cans are still preferred. Cans are lighter than bottles so when out camping, packing in and packing out the empties is simple. Why would you want to have to carry out heavy, empty bottles? Cans can be crushed, take up less space, and an empty case is easy to carry.

Cans are also easier on the environment. Aluminum is infinitely recyclable and a can only takes eight weeks to make the trip from recycling center back to the canning line. In

addition, they are almost fifty percent lighter than bottles so they cost less to ship, both when empty and when full. This greatly reduces their carbon footprint. There has always been a perception that canned beers are something less than high quality, but that is simply untrue. Dale Katechis from Oskar Blues, the man who lent his name to the flagship Dale’s Pale Ale and started what the folks at Oskar Blues humbly call The Canned Beer Apocalypse, states it very simply,” The myth is that highquality craft beer has to be in a brown bottle.” When in reality, bottles were only used as a matter of economy. Canning lines were too big and too expensive; and minimum can orders were prohibitive. That is the main reason why bottles were the initial choice of craft brewers. To further put that perception to rest, look no further than the New York Times. Several years ago they conducted a blind taste test of 25 top selling pale ales, Dale’s Pale Ale won the competition and was named as the Best Pale Ale in America. It was also the only entrant in a can.

was evident at the AmericCAN Festival held last May in Chandler. Hell or High Watermelon Wheat and Brew Free or Die IPA are their big sellers, but if you ever have a chance, try Hop Crisis or Monk’s Blood. Minnesota’s Surly brewing is known for making big beers in cans with entries such as Furious, a big American style IPA and CynicAle, a Belgian Saison style beer. They also have some of the finest looking cans out there. You can also find great looking cans from Indianapolis youngster Sun King. Open only a couple of years, these folks already make some fantastic beer and are achieving national recognition for their flavorful beers. Anderson Valley, Abita and Breckenridge are all beers available in Arizona that have recently, or will shortly, introduce cans. Websites are even springing up around the canned beer revolution. CraftCans.com lists 388 beers made by 135 breweries lo-

Since the last time we looked at craft in a can, the canned beer world has absolutely exploded. Locally, SanTan brewing has hit the scene harder than any new brewery ever has. They have four core brands, Devil’s Ale, Hefeweizen, Epicenter Amber and Hopshock IPA. Their package beer is available exclusively in cans, and they have become one of the fastest growing breweries around. Another local brewery that has embraced the power of cans is Grand Canyon. Their Black Iron IPA is available only in cans, while they offer their two top selling beers, Sunset Amber and American Pilsner in either bottle or cans. The latter was recently introduced in cans along with a wheat beer. All four roll up into the Trail Mix pack, a twelve pack featuring three each of all four canned beers. SanTan also offers a variety pack. Given the current success of sampler packs, these should be popular just about everywhere. Nationally, canned beer is also growing. San Francisco based 21st Amendment Brewing has become known as a leader in cans, as

cated in 40 different states that are canning at least one beer. These beers represent 65 different styles. The most popular beer style in cans is IPA, but if you look hard enough you can find Pumpkin Ales, Barleywines, Cascadian Dark Ales and even a Russian Imperial Stout in cans. Canned beers are fresher, maintain their quality better, are easier to take with you for outdoor activities and help the environment. There is absolutely no reason not to try some craft in a can. Fortunately, as you have no doubt seen, it is easy to do so. Places like Papago, Whole Foods, Tops, Sun Devil and many more all have a great selection. If you are looking to enjoy caned craft beer with a meal, Mellow Mushroom has an incredible selection at both their Happy Valley and Tempe locations. Whether hiking, biking, camping, boating, fishing or whatever, pick up some craft in a can. You will enjoy it, and with the lighter weight of cans, you can bring some extra for a friend; I can meet you at the campsite if you want to share.

All Hail the Orange & Black! Well, the Beer Anyway! By “King” James Swann

Hello again everyone and thanks for all the feedback on last week’s review! You’ve given me a few great ideas to work through in the next couple of months, but today we are going to chat about Orange & Black Congrats Ale from Molyan’s Brewery. Moylan’s is located in Novato, CA. and opened its doors in 1995 when Brendan Moylan co-owner of Marin Brewing in Larkspur, CA. felt the need to branch out and expand upon his brewing practices and ideals. Seeing a nitch in the north California market, he immediately began producing big challenging brews for a continually growing market of educated beer geeks. Moylan’s have since become well known for high alpha acid west coast style brews such as Hop Sickle, Moylander Double IPA and Old Blarney Barley Wine. Today however, the beer in question is a smooth black ale spiked with fresh orange zest from California’s own backyard. Orange and Black Congrats Ale was brewed to commemorate the San Francisco Giants victory in the World Series last year and was released this year on Opening Day as the Giants took on the Oakland A’s in the famous Bay Bridge Series. It pours almost totally opaque with a slight hint of crimson color and a thick beige head. On the nose you’ll find candied orange, fig and tons of ripe fruit with balancing notes of bitter chocolate and west coast hops. Mouth feel isn’t quite as large as the nose would have you believe but the flavors linger from start to finish. Malty, robust and quite intriguing, this brew would pair wonderfully with sweet and spicy mandarin noodles, or roast beef with a hearty gravy.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeverages.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

I realize that lately I’ve written about beers that seem out of step with our current weather conditions here in Arizona but as I said before, I just can’t look another light summer ale in the face! I promise the climate will catch up with me shortly! As always, keep sending your ideas and comments to Kingjamesswann@ gmail.com. I Love to hear them! Until next time, have a great week and Don’t Stop Believe ‘in! (I can’t believe I just said that!)

The Night Owl BY EVELYN ROMANS

RAW: Phoenix Presents Junction at Foundry RAW: Natural Born Artists is a nationwide organization that supports up and coming artists in the community by holding monthly events showcasing their work in a fun, cocktail-attired environment. For the past two months, I have attended these events and have been thoroughly impressed by the pieces displayed and music performed by some surprisingly exceptional local artists. These creative and passionate individuals stand by their pieces and are ready and willing to explain the perspective depicted in their works, and because each showcase is different from the next, going to the following month’s event remains fresh and exciting.

7000 East Mayo Boulevard Phoenix, 85054 • (480) 419-6375

This week, RAW: Phoenix will showcase new artists with new pieces in a new, larger venue downtown which should offer a refreshing welcome to the weekend. Believe it or not, our young city does have a culture unique enough to compete with the other great cities of our nation. We aren’t just about clubbing in Scottsdale and bar hopping on Mill, we are a people grown from the desert with our own exclusive take on the ideas, images, and situations happening now in our time. Our views are seen through the scarlet, purple, and amber hues stained in our desert sunsets and driven by our blazing sun. Junction is the coming together of artists in fashion, performing, and visual arts. So when you go to Junction on Friday, let your eyes and ears absorb the ideas depicted in the various genres of imagination and creativity demonstrated at this event. What you will absorb is a kaleidoscopic array of art and culture as breathtaking as our Sonoran desert, bursting out of the epicenter of Arizona, ready for its close-up. Friday, September 9th. 7:30 pm. $10. Ages 21+. 402 S. 1ST Street Downtown Phoenix.

Dash Berlin at Axis Radius The Dutch trance troupe known the world over as Dash Berlin, will make their presence felt Friday night at Axis Radius in Scottsdale. Already well established around the world, this funky brethren hopes to make a splash

until the wee hours feeding hungry clubbers their weekly pulse-pounding fix. The collective euphoria experienced by hurling yourself into the air with thousands of sweaty co-eds can never be fully explained, and Dash’s sonic mastery reaches this climax repeatedly throughout their sets. Your raised hand claps and finger-snaps moves, which have helped accent your sub-par dance routine for years, will need to be checked at the door as there are bound to be some colorful and more flexible 20-somethings raising the bar for us all. Trance’s endurance on the worldwide ‘Top 40” charts has given credence to this oftdismissed sub-category of techno, it truly has some spectacular artistry woven in. Although many dub this genre as inferior to rock & hiphop, sometimes the simple pleasures are the best ones. Example: Jump dancing to Dash Berlin on a Friday night when you’re a bit tipsy with your pals, emanating audible shrieks of joy as you jostle for a view of the stage. If this sounds like a welcome respite from your daily grind, head over to Axis and check out the aural symphonies blasting from 20-foot tall speaker towers for a while. Your mind, body, and secret inner techno dweeb will be satisfied, at least until the next weekend rolls around. Friday, September 9th. 10 pm. Ages: 21+

Got a hot event? Grand opening? Cool new promotion? Undiscovered gem? Please write to Evelyn at Nightowl@azweeklymagazine.com to possibly be featured here each week. Please include pictures when possible.

“Escape & Enjoy” Athena Greek Cuisine is a modern and spacious restaurant with white pillars for decor. Happy Hour is 7 days a week, 4-7pm with a complimentary appetizer buffet presented by Executive Chef Charles Bowman and Chef Pete Liagos. The menu ranges from $4-$7 items. I took a stretch and tried the caviar mousse which was really delicious. I always pair one drink with the dishes that I order and I enjoyed the appletini very much. 7000 E Mayo Blvd #26, Phoenix, AZ 85054

“More Bang for Your Buck” Everyone loves some amazing Chinese food. Jimmy Woos in Old Town Scottsdale is awesome for happy hour. The best deal is the emporer slider where you get: crab puffs, spare ribs, chicken and pork dumplings, and two egg rolls for only $15. Their cocktails are half off and so are their bottles of wine. This restaurant’s atmosphere is more than visually pleasing with their red fusions and upscale atmosphere. Happy hour is every day from 3-7pm. 4233 North Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85251

“Roll On Through” There are several locations for RA sushi bar, but Tempe has to be my favorite. I enjoy the dim lighting and the traffic that comes through in that area. The vegas roll is fabulous and only $7. The mango margarita is one of my favorite drinks and they definitely make them well. The staff is always real friendly and accommodating. Happy hour is MondayFriday 4-7pm. 411 South Mill Avenue #103, Tempe, AZ 85281.

WHEN TIMES GET TOUGH … THINK BEFORE YOU ACT… JUST FOR LAUGHS A Penny Saved... David Posman, 33, was arrested recently in Providence, R.I, after allegedly knocking out an armored car driver and stealing the closest four bags of money. Turned out they contained $800 in PENNIES, weighed 30 pounds each, and slowed him to a stagger during his getaway so that police officers easily jumped him from behind.

Police were called and upon reviewing the ransom note, it was noted that the message had been written on the perpetrator’s bank deposit slip. Police traveled to the man’s house and arrested him on his front porch.

Note To Mechanic… An auto mechanic received

a repair order that read: “Check for clunking sound when going around corners.” Taking the car out for a test drive, he made a right turn, and a moment later he heard a ‘clunk’. He then made a left turn and again heard a ‘clunk’. Back at the shop he opened the car’s trunk, and soon discovered the problem. Promptly he returned the repair order to the service manager with the notation, “Removed A BAG WITH 2 GUNS, A BLACK SKI MASK AND A LARGE CANVAS BAG WITH WELLS FARGO NIGHT DROP WRITTEN ON IT WHICH HAD ROLLS OF CHANGE INSIDE from trunk”.

Car Phone… A woman was reporting her car as stolen and mentioned that there was a car phone in it. The policeman taking the report called the phone and told the guy that answered that he had read the ad in the newspaper and wanted to buy the car. They arranged to meet, and the thief was arrested.
