CBS is reportedly developing a small screen adaptation of Duncan Jones’s sci-fi thriller “Source Code.” The action/procedural series is said to follow three former federal agents who are part of a top-secret program that allows them to jump into the consciousness of people involved in tragic events in order to find the culprits and potentially stop further tragedies from happening.

A young man (Taylor Lautner) must run for his life soon after learning that the folks who raised him are not his real parents. (PG-13 – 106 minutes) *Not screened for review.
A marine biologist (Harry Connick Jr.), a prosthetics designer (Morgan Freeman) and a boy (Nathan Gamble) try to save a dolphin that lost her tail. Also starring Ashley Judd, Kris Kristofferson and Cozi Zuehlsdorff. (PG – 113 minutes) Joseph: “Outdated and old fashioned are two sides of the same coin. And that coin’s name is Winter – which, coincidentally is also the name the animal star of ‘Dolphin Tale.’ Granted, director Charles Martin Smith’s new live-action, family-friendly flick based on a true story is so innocuous that it feels as though it should have been released 20 years earlier. ever, its innocence is quite charming. Had screenwriters Karen Janszen and Noam Dromi spent more time illustrating Winter’s impact on human prosthetic programs, ‘Dolphin Tale’ may have made a bigger splash.” Grade: C Stan: “Director Charles Martin Smith, who most may remember as the accountant/federal agent in ‘The Untouchables’ starring Kevin Costner, delivers an ‘old school’ approach to the story of a dolphin that changes the lives of children, single parents, and war paraplegics. Dolphin Tale’ nicely ties the three elements together while highlighting the advances of prosthetic ideologies, and yes, this reviewer’s eyes were ‘tearfully cloudy’ on a few tender moments as the cast from the very young to the seasoned veteran actors presented a heart warming ‘tale’…” Grade: B
‘The Hedgehog’ While planning her suicide, a precocious 11-year-old (Garance Le Guillermic) befriends a new neighbor (Togo Igawa) and a prickly recluse (Josiane Balasko). In French with English subtitles. Playing exclusively at Harkins Shea 14. (NR – 100 minutes)
Randy: “Seeking out and trying foreign films is something all moviegoers should do. You get to see an amazing work of art that will never make it to your local multiplex. Such is the case with ‘The Hedgehog.’ This little film proves a bit challenging at first, but ultimately is quite rewarding. It may take a while to warm up to the characters, especially Paloma, but once you do, you will find yourself invested in them. Josaine Balasko is wonderful as Renée Michel.” Grade: AStan: “Quietly and certainly steadily, ‘The Hedgehog’ meticulously define the personality traits of the characters. Reminded of the awarding winning PBS TV series ‘Upstairs/ Downstairs’ (1971-75), the current PBS series ‘Downton Abby’, and currently in release ‘The Help’ taking place in the south in the 1960s, ‘The Hedgehog’, taking place in France of today, gives us a contemporary view of the separation of the classes. Moving performances by the cast include Josiane Balasko as the ‘janitor’ (or superintendent in some countries), Togo Igawa’s understated new upscale tenant, and the young actress Garance Le Guillermic, as the 11 year old who wants to end her life by 12 years old, carries the film. ” Grade: B+

‘If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front’ With the 2005 arrest of Daniel McGowan and 13 others, federal agents crack what is believed to be one of the largest cells of radical environmentalists in the United States. Playing exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. (NR – 85 minutes) Joseph: “The exceptionally entertaining documentary ‘If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front’ encourages comprehension of a previously misunderstood topic – if known at all – and promotes discussion all while impartially exploring the values and beliefs of people on either side of its core issues. It is impossible to walk away from producer/director Marshall Curry’s documentary without developing an increased interpretation of the consequences of action, reaction and counteraction.” Grade: B Stan: “With only news sound bites as details of the arrest of environmentalists unfolded at the time, ‘If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front’ brings front and center the depth of the phrase ‘One person’s UltraStar Surprise Pointe Cinemas 13649 North Litchfield Road in Surprise Movie Line: 623-584-3838

a fatigued formula. In other words, ‘Killer Elite’ is fun but forgettable.” Grade: C Stan: “Writer/director Gary McKendry reminds us, through all the expertly staged action sequences, that in the worlds of espionage, loyalties, and secrets, there is no black and white, only shades of grey. The veteran actors of Robert De Niro a staple for decades no matter what the genre, Jason Statham a favorite in writer/producer/director’s ‘Transporter’ films, and Clive Owen my choice for James Bond which went to Daniel Craig because of contractual commitments, deliver the depth of their characters while taking us on a global action ride.” Grade: B

Faced with a tight budget, a baseball manager (Brad Pitt) and his partner (Jonah Hill) recruit bargain-bin players that scouts have labeled as flawed, but have game-winning potential. (PG-13 – 133 minutes) Joseph: “One’s time is better spent standing unarmed in front of a pitch-
ing machine than watching ‘Moneyball.’ After all, at least the pitching machine would keep you awake. A strike-out for sure, director Bennett Miller’s movie about the modernized, analytical, sabermetric approach to assembling a competitive baseball team is not even as interesting as watching a hermit manage his fantasy sports roster. Having said that, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin’s dialogue is as biting as ever, offering many insights over the course of the film. Then again, what is the point if the plot has put you to sleep?” Grade: F Stan: “For those of us who follow baseball, have commented on the need for salary caps to ‘level the playing field’ between big market and small market teams, and based on Michael Lewis’ book ‘Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game’, it takes us to that magical time in 2002 when the Oakland Athletics defied all odds by finishing first in the American League West in spite of being out spent more than three to one for player contracts. Brad Pitt gives one of his best performances as manager Billy Beane and Jonah Hill got my attention as the statistician from Harvard. For fans of the sport, as this reviewer, the excruciatingly day-to-day behind-the-scenes process of assembling and managing a ball club is a delight to watch.” Grade: B
‘My Afternoons with Margueritte’ A barely literate laborer (Gérard Depardieu) undergoes a personal transformation through his friendship with an old woman (Gisèle Casadesus) who introduces him to the world of books. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (NR – 82 minutes) Joseph: “Well-meaning as it may be, ‘My Afternoons with Margueritte’ is
sweet enough to give most moviegoers a toothache. That is to say that writer/director Jean Becker’s lighthearted comedy takes sentimentality to all new levels. Granted, there is a chemistry between the movie’s two platonic leads that we would be lucky to experience even momentarily with only one other human being in our own real lives. However, ‘My Afternoons with Margueritte’ hugs the viewer too tightly without much story to take the schmaltz out of the squeeze.” Grade: D

Writer/Director Robert Hall
“‘Angel’ was the first show I did with any longevity and also some success,” says Hall, recalling his favorite television project. “That show springboarded us to get bigger shows. Plus, I was the only person to do more than one season of ‘Angel’ so that was my baby and a great learning experience.” Hall cites “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” as another one of his personal favorites simply because he has always been a big fan of the film franchise. However, Hall has also worked on a variety of featurelength films, such as “Quarantine,” “The Crazies,” “Devil” and “Paranormal Activity 2.” His studio most recently created actor Nick Swardson’s buck teeth – not to mention private parts – for “Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star.” Of his future projects, which include Oren Peli’s “Area 51,”Hall is most excited for audiences to see his effects for WWE’s horror flick “No One Lives,” due out next year. However, he is also eager to strike out on his own as a writer and director. Hence Hall’s 2009 horror flick “Laid to Rest” and its newly released se-

Other choices include “Take Shelter” with Jessica Chastain and “Blackthorn” with Sam Sheppard.

The Scottsdale International Film Festival is celebrating its eleventh anniversary and will feature nearly three-dozen films from more than two-dozen countries. Festival Director Amy Ettinger is excited about “Like Crazy,” the opening night film. The story is about a British college student who falls for her American classmate. “This film is so touching, so heartwarming and so real,” says Ettinger. “Plus, it was the Sundance darling.” Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones, two of the film’s stars will be in attendance. Ettinger hopes you come opening night, but also return to see the smaller, lesser-known films. “Do me a favor and see one more film that wasn’t on your list; one that has subtitles. Past is the future in ‘terra Nova’
Having Steven Spielberg as executive producer on a new Fox show attracts attention. Then when the network announces it’s giving the show the “Glee” treatment and airing the pilot in May, expectations get a rocket boost. But computer-generated dinosaurs only grow so fast, so the science-fiction drama “Terra Nova” actually premieres on Monday, Sept. 26. Fox invited writers to see a cut of the first hour of the two-hour pilot, and the special effects weren’t quite done. Another viewing of a re-edited first hour weeks later revealed ... the effects still weren’t quite done. With any luck, “Terra Nova” will hatch just in time for Monday, but executive producer Brannon Braga (with him and Spielberg, about 12 people have executive producer credits) says they’re moving right along. Speaking in late August, he says, “We’re working on the final two scripts right now. We’re deep in post-production on six and seven, about to start post-production on episodes eight and nine. We’re filming 10 and 11. We’re in the thick of it.” “Terra Nova” (or “New Earth/Land/Ground” in Latin) begins in 2149, when the planet is blighted and overcrowded. Scientists discover a fracture in time, connecting the present with the age of dinosaurs. So “pilgrimages” of humans and equipment are sent through the rift to establish a colony in the distant past in hopes of saving humanity and having a second chance for a better civilization. But since the new land has the same old human beings, you can imagine how well that goes. “Just because we’re aspiring to do better this time,” says Braga, “doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s going to work out the way they want it to.” Jason O’Mara (“Life on Mars”) stars as Chicago cop Jim Shannon, who busts out of the prison he was sent to because he and his wife, Dr. Elisabeth Shannon (Shelley Conn), broke their society’s two-child rule. Elisabeth is recruited for the Tenth Pilgrimage, and Jim risks it all to get himself, her, their teenagers (Landon Liboiron, Naomi Scott) and their youngest daughter (Alana Mansour) through the rift. Once there, he meets the colony’s imposing leader, Cmdr. Nathaniel Taylor (Stephen Lang), a lot of hostile (and nonhostile) prehistoric creatures and shockingly clean air. But there are issues with the neighbors, some pilgrims who seem to have a different agenda. Soon Taylor must call on Jim’s law enforcement skills to battle foes both animal and human. As for Jim’s relationship with Taylor, O’Mara says, “We wanted to create a kind of Butch and Sundance thing, regardless of any age differences. We just wanted to tell a story about two guys who’ve come together with a similar cause. “There are strains and conflicts in their relationship, but they, for the most part, have come together and united to make Terra Nova a better place and also to defend it against all attackers at all costs.”

Friendly English pub with food for both Brits and Yanks
Say you were having an intimate dinner party. And say Emeril Lagasse happened to be the chef. That’s the feel the cooking superstar wants with “Emeril’s Table,” his weekday Hallmark Channel series that premieres Monday, Sept. 26. In each episode, Lagasse gathers, educates and feeds five people with some connection to one another, whether they’re relatives or peers in nursing or firefighting. “I haven’t really been anchored for a couple of years,” Lagasse says of the television work that formerly made him one of Food Network’s most familiar faces. “I came back and worked on Planet Green, which was something I wanted to do, and I really enjoyed the second year because I was allowed to go out in the field more. Going to farms and dairies was really intriguing to me.”

THE LOWDOWN ON SOUR BEERS In case you haven’t noticed it, sour beers are becoming increasingly popular. While I doubt they will ever be as popular as IPAs, they are certainly picking up more than a reasonable amount of interest. People are discovering that, once you get past the first couple of sips, sour beers can be refreshing and adventurous. For that reason, I always refer to them as “three-sip” beers. The first sip you want to spit out, the second sip is a little more palatable… and finally by the third sip you are starting to appreciate the simple complexity of the beer. So, where did these beers come from and how did they get so popular? Recently, craft brewers have pushed the envelope by creating increasingly hoppy (bitter) beers that
have challenged the taste receptors and been part of the backbone of the Extreme Beer movement. By now they have created all sorts of new flavors whether through dry hopping, wet hopping, continuous hopping, single hopping or whatever other type of hopping exists. Bitter is great and there is probably plenty more to discover, but people looking for extreme flavor are looking to be challenged with something other than bitter. And that’s where sour beers are starting to make their move. Not that creating sour beers is a new concept… as we will see a couple of paragraphs down, it is old as beer itself. It’s also not brand new to craft brewers either. Tomme Arthur created a beer called Mo BettaBretta sometime around 2004 when he was at Pizza Port and I am sure that wasn’t the first of the American Wild Ales as they have come to be known. However this one sticks with me in particular because of a symposium I attended in 2005 at Papago Brewing Company in Scottsdale Arizona. The event was a brewers’ roundtable featuring Tomme, Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head, Adam Avery of Avery Brewing, Derek
Osborne from BJ’s Brewery, Andy Ingram from Four Peaks and Jim Strelau from Oak Creek Brewing. The topic was extreme beers and each brewer featured some outrageously strong beer. Except for Tomme Arthur.Tomme brought the aforementioned Mo BettaBretta and made the point that extreme beers didn’t need to be high ABV hop bombs. A simple 6% ABV beer could still be considered extreme because extreme is about flavor and nothing else. The beer was mouth puckering sour and it was refreshing and it was perfect. I had tried sour beers before, but after this one, I was hooked. As a side note, this beer was brewed collaboratively with Peter Bouckaert of New Belgium Brewing in Colorado. Peter had come to New Belgium by way of Rodenbach, perhaps one of the best producers of sour style beers. Anyway, let’s see if we can’t dig in to the history of sour beer just a little, figure out where the styles came from and then end on a high note. Not likely, but here we go.

There are a variety of styles that get rolled up under the term “sour” and it may not be entirely fair to stick them all with the same label, but at some level the similarities in these styles outweigh the differences. There is so much going on with these beers that perhaps the descriptor sour may not even be appropriate. Jeff Sparrow, author of a book called Wild Brews, had originally titled it “Sour Beers.” But as he explored the Belgian brewing traditions that have contributed so much to the topic, he changed his mind. “I always say that this beer isn’t sour—it’s wild. I say that because, if all a beer was, was sour, who’s going to like it? There’s so much more going on.” What styles fall in to this category? There are lambics and their attendant variations made with fruit or by blending old and young in to Gueuze; there are the sometimes vinegar like West Flanders Sour Red Ales; the East Flanders Brown Ales, sometimes called Oud Bruins; the “champagne of the North,” as Napoleon Bonaparte dubbed the German Berliner Weiss and even the classic Pierre Celis Belgian Witbier. To understand these beers it helps to understand a little about the “bugs” that make them. There are four basic types and hundreds of variations. Brettanomyces is wild yeast that produces flavors and aromas that are best described as funky. Other descriptors like horse blanket, bandaid and sweat don’t sound quite as appealing…but they are accurate. The other three most common bugs are lactobacillus, pediococcus and acetobacter. But wait you say, struggling to recall your high school biology, aren’t those last three some kind of bacteria? Of course they are and they provide absolutely wonderful flavors to these amazing beers. The first two produce lactic acid which is the same thing in sour milk, but in beer, lactic acid takes on more of a sweet and sour characteristic. The latter produces acetic acid which is responsible for the vinegar like flavors in some beers. These can all combine to produce esters which are a complicated chemical compound. All you need to know is that they provide some incredible complexity in a beer. Lambics are produced in very few parts of Belgium and are typically done in a cobweb filled, dirty appearing brewery, sometimes with windows to throw open to the fields outside. The reason for all this is to capture the natural wild yeasts surrounding the area in an open fermentation process allowing them to bring the unique flavors of that particular region to the beer. Young and old lambics can be blended to produce gueuze and fruit can be added to produce a fruit lambic. In the case of fruit lambics, raspberry (Framboise) and cherry (Kriek) are the most common, but other fruits can be used. Beware of certain lambics that don’t have the funk you would expect from this process. These “coca cola” lambics, as they are called typically add Acesulfame-K, a type of saccharine, to artificially sweeten the beer to make it more appealing to mass consumption. This is loosely based on an old Belgian tradition of serving the lambic with two sugar cubes, allowing the consumer to determine whether or not to sweeten the beer and exactly how much.

bugs in the wooden vessels they are stored in to produce both lactic and acetic notes to the beer. At renowned Rodenbach, brewmaster Rudi Ghequire defines the acidification of the beer as “a late Middle Ages conservation method” that prevented spoilage by pushing pH levels too low for dangerous bacteria to thrive, as older, more acidic beer was mixed with younger batches. Foeders, the giant oaken tuns where the beer matures, vary enough from one to another that several different foeders are tapped for the final blend. Oud Bruin beers rely on the introduction of the bugs directly and are fermented in stainless steel to help control the final product a little better. These beers tend to be sweeter than their red counterparts with flavors of caramel, toffee and dark fruit. The final product is very malty with undertones of sherry. Berliner Weisses are different in that they are typically made from unboiledwort (unfermented beer) which is even more conducive to the lactic acid producing bugs. Berliner Weisses can be out of this world tart and have been compared to incredibly tart lemonade. These beers can be absolutely refreshing on a hot day. The Berlin brewers took notice of some people’s aversion to too sour of a beer, but instead of sugar cubes as with the lambics, Berliner Weisses are frequently served with one of two syrups. A himbeer or raspberry syrup to provide a sweeter fruit counterpart to the sour beer, or a woodruff syrup which is an herb grown in Germany. The woodruff syrup is more woodsy, but takes advantage of the natural sweetness of woodruff. Finally, the Belgian Wit…Pierre Celis, who recently passed away in his late eighties, is credited with reviving this style at a number of breweries both in Belgium and the United States. But most people think of this beer as just a nice unfiltered wheat beer with a little orange peel and coriander. In reality, according to legendary beer author, Randy Mosher…well let him tell you in his own words. “Pierre Celis was pretty generous with details about his beer, but I understand he had a locked room in the brewery in Texas where only he had the key, and he did some sort of lactic fermentation in there. It’s a minor detail, but it’s an important part of the overall flavor profile of those white beers to have a kind of a bright, palate-cleansing acidity that helps balance the creamy, milkshaky texture.” Well there you have it, a not so brief primer on sour beers, a little bit of digression on my part and yet another right up to my deadline article being written. One final thought, we spoke earlier of hoppy beers and the bitterness that has pushed the boundaries for the past ten years or so and the trend towards other flavors, like sour. Well the best example that I know of that blends these two concepts is a beer from New Belgium Brewing called Le Terroir. This is a traditionally brewed sour ale right up to the point where they dry hop it (adding hops during the fermentation process) giving it a flavor like no other beer you have had before. I think I might even have one lurking in my beer cellar… and I deserve something special for finishing this article.

Reunion Ale 2011, A Cause for Great Cause! Hello again everyone, hope you enjoyed last week’s review on Autumn Maple from The Bruery as it almost wasn’t! I had horrid email issues & barely made the print deadline, so first things first. A BIG THANKS to Brian and the entire staff at AZ Weekly for taking the extra time to make sure my article went to press!!! This week’s review takes a more serious note than usual as we have a look at He ‘Brew Reunion Ale 2011. A collaboration with Terrapin Brewing to benefit REUNION - A Day for Hope. First though, let’s chat for a bit about the brewery. He ‘Brew Ales are one of two quite popular lines of beer coming from Shmaltz Brewing in San Francisco. Founded in 1996, Shmaltz takes an unusual route in the brewing, naming and promotion of their beers. In the words of Jeremy Cohen, master brewer and proprietor, “It took 13 years, extreme Jewish brewing and circus sideshow freaks to make Shmaltz Brewing Co. an international success.” Agreed and then some! Shmaltz has won Numerous Gold Medals at the world Beer Championships and has no less than 10 beers with a 90+ Rating on Ratebeer.com. WOW! Now back to that serious note. As unusual and high strung as Shmatlz beers tend to be it was nice to see Jeremy collaborating with Terrapin brewing for such a great cause. REUNION - A Day for Hope is a “not for profit” organization that raises money for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research. For those not savvy to medical lingo, Myeloma is a cancer of the Blood Plasma that affects thousands of people every year and currently has no cure. This is the third straight year a collaboration beer has been produced to benefit REUNION and if I may say so, this brew is quite special. This time around, it’s a very complex imperial brown ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla and chili peppers. ABV sits at a stout 8.5% and backs up a beer full of character and flavour. It pours a deep dark brown with a light brown head and plenty of lacing left down the glass. Sweet aromas abound with of lots of vanilla, toffee, roasted malt and bittersweet chocolate. The chocolate essence makes for a nice, fullbodied mouth feel while the chili pepper gives it a nice, well-balanced kick. Very unusual and quite interesting!
Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeverages.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com
REUNION 2001 Ale can be found at Papago Brewing, Tops Liquor, Sun Devil Liquor & Whole Foods Chandler AZ. A very interesting beer, a great cause and well worth seeking out! As always please feel free to send your questions or comments to kingjamesswann@gmail. com. Until next time kids, keep those coats buttoned up tight and those wellies strapped on straight! (sorry, just me wishing again for winter weather). Cheers!

of our own, Arizona Diamondbacks.
By Stan Robinson
And as always, my best tip to enjoying the games in person: bring your Walkman or listen on your ‘smart phone’ to the D’Backs ‘play by play’ action while watching the games at Chase Field. Be sure it’s tuned to 620 KTAR-AM for the masterful team of Greg Schulte, Tom Candiotti, and Jeff Munn. With the Smartphone apps available, there’s nothing like the game being called in one ear and the roar of the crowd with the Chase Field sound system ‘promptings’ in the other!
As I screened the movie ‘Moneyball’ starring Brad Pitt as A’s manager Billy Beane opening Friday 23 September, and based on Michael Lewis’ book ‘Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game’, that takes us to that magical time in 2002 when the Oakland Athletics defied all odds by finishing first in the American League West, I smiled as I reflected on the magical season this year for our own Arizona Diamondbacks. It was true magic in the air during the ten-year anniversary celebration of the 2001 World Series win. Many of the notables from that winning team were on hand, and I’ll cherish the D’Backs World Series replica ring I received with fond memories. I moved to Arizona in 2000, an avid baseball lover decided that if I live in a city, I should support their teams. Imagine my delight when they won the World Series the following year. As the D’Backs magic started to escalate after the All-Star week of activities in our own home town venue for the All-Star game, our D’Backs set a few records of their own as they finish their remaining regular season games for a nice home stand, and expected to clinch a playoff spot right here, at home!

The Arizona Diamondbacks returned home with the most road wins of 43-38, the best since 2002 and the most ‘come from behind wins’ in all of baseball. With the D’Backs spirit of never giving up until that very last out and the possibility to win the game, make it a point to come out during this last home stand of the regular season to show our appreciation for the accomplishments September 22nd, 2011 - September 28th, 2011

The Detroit Lions haven’t seen a playoff game since 1999 nor a winning season since 2000, but Matthew Stafford has given them reason to believe all that will change in 2011. Assuming, of course, he stays healthy. The strong-armed Georgia alum and No. 1 overall pick in 2009 showed glimpses of his elite-level ability his rookie year, when he beat out veteran Daunte Culpepper for the Lions’ starting job in training camp, then threw for 2,267 yards and 13 touchdowns in 10 games. That year, he lost time to a knee injury in October and finally, a seasonending nonthrowing shoulder separation in November. But the play in which he suffered the shoulder injury could wind up being the stuff of legend. Trailing Cleveland 37-31 with seconds remaining, Stafford heaved a desperation pass from the Browns’ 32-yard line that was intercepted in the end zone, but Cleveland was then called for pass interference, thus advancing the ball to the 1. Injured from being hit after the play, Stafford got back up and after a timeout, tossed a TD strike to Brandon Pettigrew to seal a thrilling 38-37 Detroit victory. AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Dr. John and the Lower 911 FUNK/RHYTHM AND BLUES/ PSYCHEDELIC ROCK September 30th, 2011 at The Compound Grill
Dr. John, or Mac Rebennack as known to friends and family, is universally celebrated as the living embodiment of the rich musical heritage exclusive to New Orleans. His very colorful musical career began in the 1950s when he wrote and played guitar on some of the greatest records to come out of the Crescent City, including recordings by Professor Longhair, Art Neville, Joe Tex and Frankie Ford. A notorious gun incident forced the artist to give up the guitar and concentrate on organ and piano. Further trouble at home sent Dr. John west in the 1960s, where he continued to be in demand as a session musician, playing on records by Sonny and Cher, Van Morrison, Aretha Franklin and The Rolling Stones infamous Exile On Main St. to name a few. Dr. John garnered Grammy award wins in 1989, 1992, 1996 and 2000. In 2004, his musical love letter to the city of New Orleans, “N’awlinz Dis Dat or D’udda,” was awarded the prestigious Académie Charles Cros 57ème Palmarès award in France. It was the first time since the 1970s that an artist from North America received the award. He has also received six other nominations over the years. In 2007 he was nominated for a Grammy for “Sippiana Hericane,” his Hurricane Katrina benefit disc. Other awards include the American Society of Young Musicians 2007 Trailblazer Award. After Hurricane Katrina and government bunglers bashed New Orleans in 2005, Dr. John immediately stepped up to the plate with both generous relief fund-raising concerts and recordings and angry public words of protest. In 2008 he released “City That Care Forgot,” an album winning him a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album. 2010’s release, Tribal, has Dr. John revisiting that classic, swampy gris-gris style that put him on the map with raving reviews. After a half century of creating music for others and himself, Dr. John continues to write, arrange, produce and interpret with a passion that has yet to wane. He continues to dazzle and delight audiences across the globe touring consistently. $40-$60 tickets plus sales tax. Prices vary due to different sections. VIP/GA/ Tables/Bar. Tickets are available at www.thecompoundgrill.com or at the Compound Grill Box Office. The Compound Grill @ 9:00pm 7000 E. Mayo Boulevard, Scottsdale 480-585-5483

time he also launched his solo career, developing the charismatic persona of Dr. John The Nite Tripper. Adorned with voodoo charms and regalia, a legend was born with his breakthrough 1968 album Gris-gris, which established his unique blend of voodoo mysticism, funk, rhythm & blues, psychedelic rock and Creole roots. Several of his many career highlights include the masterful album Sun, Moon and Herbs in 1971 which included cameos from Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger and 1973’s In The Right Place, which contained the chart hits “Right Place Wrong Time” and “Such A Night.”

The Night Owl BY EVELYN ROMANS
Rock Out Hunger at Martini Ranch After a night of drunken debauchery in downtown Phoenix, a couple of friends and I decided to be proactive in preventing the ugly hangover sure to occur later that morning by indulging in the less-than-delicious-when-sober meals at Denny’s in the early morning. One of my classy friends then ordered the country fried steak and smothered his nutritious entrée in A1 Steak Sauce. A riot of laughter sprung from my gut as I continued to poke fun at his taste in drunk food, and in revenge, he then proceeded to pour A1 all over my own hash browns. The laughter continued and I wasn’t even upset at wasting the food. Not a single thought of those less fortunate than we crossed our pickled brains. But as citizens of one of the most fortunate countries on earth, it should be our duty to care for those who do indeed go to sleep starving.
7000 East Mayo Boulevard Phoenix, 85054 • (480) 419-6375
This Saturday, make up for all those late night fares of overindulgence and attend Rock Out Hunger hosted by Waste Not, an organization that collects excess perishable food from restaurants and other food purveyors and delivers them the same day to after-school programs, rehabilitation centers, daycares, senior facilities and other agencies feeding hungry people. Rock Out Hunger will be a night of dancing, cocktails, and socializing with live music from the band, Random Karma. A cover charge of $10 will also get you a raffle ticket for various prizes and will go directly to the organization. Going should make you feel less guilty about your munchie runs to Filibertos--unless you jump on the scale the next morning, of course. Saturday, September 24th. 7 – 10 pm. 7295 E. Stetson Drive. Ages 21+ Downtown Chandler’s Oktoberfest Ladies, it’s time to bust out that old Beer Maid costume and enter Downtown Chandler’s Beer Maid contest for a chance to win $500 to go toward this Halloween’s slutty costume! Not only do
you enter the chance to win cash, you’ll also have a better chance at winning one of the beer pong tournaments by distracting the perverted gentlemen who think they’re so bomb at playing pong. Bring it! Other events in the Beer X games include, tricycle racing, bag toss, keg rolling and stacking, and stein racing (those start at 3 so go early and sign up online if you’re for serious). SanTan, Papago, Sun-Up, Grand Canyon, Sonoran, and Thunder Canyon brewing companies will be serving you delightful beverages all day so by the time Lit comes on to play at 8, you’ll be happily slurring the words to “My Own Worst Enemy” and likely thinking that you really are the next morning. Here’s a tip: Beer, water, beer, water, beer, etc. then cab. This should help avoid your car ending up in the front yard and you wondering why you’re sleeping with your clothes on, and then maybe you’ll also remember what you said when you were drunk. Oktoberfest is supposed to be a welcoming, fun tradition not a realization of you being your own worst enemy, right? Saturday, September 24th. 2 – 10 pm. 8 South San Marcos Plaza, Chandler. All Ages. www. santanoktoberfest.com $10.

“No one said “upscale” couldn’t be inexpensive” Roka Akor is definitely a trendy spot in Scottsdale with high quality food and beautiful interior decor. The center bar is a great layout for the restaurant and has a romantic setting. The happy hour is on the daily from 4pm-6pm and has a variety of food. The signature Tataki is for good reason; wrapped with white asparagus and topped with yuzu sauce for an immaculate presentation for only $6. 7299 North Scottsdale Rd. 85253 “Step out of your comfort zone” I am all about trying new places; obviously, and Thai Rama really nails that curiosity. Their lunch specials MondayFriday are not something I would want to miss out on. From 11am-2pm Thai Rama has specials all under $7. The Phat Krapoa (chicken stir fried with chili peppers, onion, bamboo shoots, and basil) is simply amazing. I cannot correctly pronounce anything on the menu, but it does not even matter once the food gets to you. The specials all come with steamed rice, wonton chips, and an eggroll. 2040 West Chandler Blvd. 85224
The heroes of the Marvel Comics universe have been a common topic for video games since the late 1980s. Their over-the-top personalities and powers helped to create games that spanned the genres, from fighting to action, with epic tales of sacrifice and selflessness. Despite the near-infinite list of heroes and villains to choose from, more often than not, the much-maligned mutants of the X-Men seem to find themselves the topic of these interactive adventures. Now, fresh on the heels of the DVD release of “X-Men: First Class,” we’re given another reason to sing the praises of Marvel with Activision’s “X-Men: Destiny.” Mutants are born with the X-gene – an alteration to their DNA that results in the manifestation of a strange ability or appearance. As fear begins to set in for those born without this gene, war erupts – not only between mutants and humans but between mutants with differing philosophies regarding their abilities. You are the next mutant to manifest your abilities, which places you at a very difficult crossroad in your life. Will you side with the heroic X-Men, bent on preserving humanity, or the Brotherhood, a group that wants humanity beneath its heel? How the story plays out from that point is truly up to you.

“Hidden Gems are always a good find” Between the hours of 3pm-6pm you can enjoy awesome food for a good price. This place caught my eye out of nowhere, for it’s not in a prime location. Wine and cocktails are $5, and the drafts are a dollar off. For only ten dollars I got five street tacos, and garlic cilantro chicken wings that were the business. The décor is simple but pleasing with the writings on the wall displaying their specials. If you find yourself driving by I highly suggest taking a pit stop. 3433 North 56th St. Phoenix, AZ 85018

WHEN TIMES GET TOUGH … THINK BEFORE YOU ACT… JUST FOR LAUGHS A Penny Saved... David Posman, 33, was arrested recently in Providence, R.I, after allegedly knocking out an armored car driver and stealing the closest four bags of money. Turned out they contained $800 in PENNIES, weighed 30 pounds each, and slowed him to a stagger during his getaway so that police officers easily jumped him from behind.
Women on average speak about 7000 words a day. Men, 2000. As a punishment for misbehavior, Thai cops have to wear pink Hello Kitty armbands.
The Lottery… Californian Bill Helko had the winning numbers in the local lottery, the first prize being $412,000. He went and ordered a Porsche, booked a holiday in Hawaii and had a champagne dinner with his wife and friends at an expensive Hollywood restaurant. When he went to pick up the winnings he found that 9,097 others had also won first prize and his share of the jackpot was $45. Cash Machine In Kentucky… Two men tried to pull the front of a cash machine off by running a chain from the machine to the bumper of their pickup truck. Instead of pulling the front panel off the machine, though, they pulled the bumper off their truck. Scared, they left the scene and drove home. With the chain still attached to the machine. With their bumper still attached to the chain. With their vehicle’s license plate still attached to the bumper. Deposit Slip Up In North Dakota… A man from the town of Grand Forks, North Dakota, decided to travel to Fargo so that he could rob the First Community Bank. The criminal quickly scribbled a note demanding money and gave it to the teller. Frightened, she gave the man what he asked for and watched him run out of the door. Police were called and upon reviewing the ransom note, it was noted that the message had been written on the perpetrator’s bank deposit slip. Police traveled to the man’s house and arrested him on his front porch.

Note To Mechanic… An auto mechanic received
a repair order that read: “Check for clunking sound when going around corners.” Taking the car out for a test drive, he made a right turn, and a moment later he heard a ‘clunk’. He then made a left turn and again heard a ‘clunk’. Back at the shop he opened the car’s trunk, and soon discovered the problem. Promptly he returned the repair order to the service manager with the notation, “Removed A BAG WITH 2 GUNS, A BLACK SKI MASK AND A LARGE CANVAS BAG WITH WELLS FARGO NIGHT DROP WRITTEN ON IT WHICH HAD ROLLS OF CHANGE INSIDE from trunk”.
Car Phone… A woman was reporting her car as stolen and mentioned that there was a car phone in it. The policeman taking the report called the phone and told the guy that answered that he had read the ad in the newspaper and wanted to buy the car. They arranged to meet, and the thief was arrested.
