Joseph: “Director Marc Forster’s drama ‘Machine Gun Preacher’ powerfully portrays the heart of the ultimate spiritual struggle – even if writer Jason Keller’s screenplay is a bit weak around the edges. Granted, the personal transformations that occur in ‘Machine Gun Preacher’ – which is based on the true tale of a drug-dealing biker who finds God and becomes a crusader for hundreds of Sudanese children – are a bit unfounded and abrupt. However, its authentic account of faith’s inherent challenges and a well-rounded performance from star Gerard Butler more than make up for the movie’s shortcomings.” Grade: B Stan: “As our professor in film school often reminded us, if a movie can entertain, enlighten, or inform the viewer to elicit an emotional response, it has achieved its initial purpose. ‘Machine Gun Preacher’ does just that as it adds humanity to the news sound bites we often see relative to victims of wars, while reinforcing that ‘one person can make a difference’, starting with oneself. In “Killer Elite,” Jason Statham stars as a formidable special-ops agent named Danny who must cut his way through a team of assassins to rescue his kidnapped mentor Hunter (Robert De Niro). Yvonne Strahovski, known for her role as Sarah Walker on television’s “Chuck,” plays Danny’s girlfriend Anne.

“My character is sort of the heart of the movie. There is all of this amazing action going on and then there is this anchor that is the love story that occurs between Anne and Danny. We get to see a softer side of Jason. We are always watching him be the tough guy in movies. He is very good at being the action star. It was kind of awesome to be in a Jason Statham movie to begin with. Jason is a really fun guy to work with. He is very focused when we work and very funny in between scenes. He is a brilliantly enthusiastic guy. I also learned that I can hold it together when shooting a scene with Robert De Niro. That was certainly quite a test. It was sort of overwhelming, exciting and nerve-wracking all at the same time to work with such a legend.

I was a little jealous that I was not kicking some butt in the movie but it was really nice to change the pace up. One of the greatest things about being an actor is that you get to be so many different people in one lifetime. So, for me, the fact that I did get to change it up was a real bonus. ‘Horror Story’

Los Angeles is all about sun, fun, swimming pools and movie stars … but in the mind of Ryan Murphy, it’s also about a haunted Victorian-style mansion with a bizarre basement, a bloody past and an equally bedeviled present. On Wednesday, Oct. 5, FX premieres “American Horror Story,” a drama from Murphy and longtime producing partner Brad Falchuk (“Nip/Tuck,” “Glee”). Dylan McDermott (“Deep Blue”) stars as psychiatrist Ben Harmon, who has come with wife Vivien (Connie Britton, “Friday Night Lights”) and teenage daughter Violet (Taissa Farmiga) to Los Angeles from the East in an attempt to put his family – shattered by grief and infidelity – back together. They take up residence in an elaborate house with a sordid past, including murder, mayhem and mystery, all with a supernatural twist. Unsurprisingly, it was a remarkable real-estate bargain. To make things even more fun, the Harmons have a strange neighbor, Constance (Jessica Lange), who, along with her daughter (Jamie Brewer), has an unnerving tendency to show up in the Harmons’ kitchen at will. And there’s an older housekeeper (Frances Conroy) who looks like a very different person (Alexandra Breckenridge) to Ben. Ben also has a tortured young patient (Evan Peters) and meets a man (Denis O’Hare) who has a strange story to tell about his residence in the house. Ben is responsible for the adultery that has put a strain on his marriage, but it was a result of events that came before. “I think he’s complicated,” McDermott says. “Being a psychiatrist, he knows a lot about psychology, but he’s also suffering from his own demons that he has, which come from some of his childhood stuff that’s unresolved.

Carla Hall was a Girl Scout in Tennessee when she discovered how much she loved to cook. Her first dish was an apple dessert with an oatmeal, cinnamon and sugar topping. And yes, she did earn a merit badge in cooking. Since, Hall, famed for saying “Hootie-Hoo,” has mastered thousands of far more complicated dishes but still loves making desserts. The two-time fan favorite on “Top Chef” returns to TV this week as a host of ABC’s daytime show “The Chew.” Hall, who bursts into song regularly during a conversation, is simply fun. She’s been an accountant and a model, and she danced while a student at Howard. She joins chefs Mario Batali and Michael Symon on the show. Among her contributions will be teaching something critical in kitchens: how to save a disaster.

FESTIVALS ABOUND Great American Beer Festival and Fall Event Preview It is that time of year again. By the time this issue hits your hot little hands, I will be up to my neck in a whole lotta Great American Beer Festival. Finishing up packing and planning and arranging bail money… just in case. Regardless, this year is the 30th Anniversary of this festival and once again will set records for size. It already set records for sales, selling out all 49,000 tickets in just about a week. But don’t worry if you didn’t get a

ticket to every, or any, session. If you are in Denver there is plenty to do. In addition to the old favorites, Breckenridge Brewery, Great Divide Brewing, Wynkoop and, of course, Falling Rock Taphouse, there are plenty of other places to really get your beer on. A little bit outside of LoDo (a short walk really), on Colfax Street is The Cheeky Monk. This is one of three locations and it will be the busiest during the week. Specialty beers will abound with everything from the Belgian beers they are known for to a Saturday morning “Breakfast with the Bruery”. Start with Ale House at Amato, take the 16th Street shuttle as far west as possible and cross the two pedestrian bridges and it is right there. The Ale House always features a mix of great Colorado beers and is the perfect spot for an out of towner to learn why Colorado is called the “Napa of Beer.” Right in LoDo, you can hit Ghost Plate and Tap, located at the site of the old Rocky Mountain Diner, this place features plenty of taps and plenty of great food. Other newer bars include FreshCraft, Euclid Hall (these guys know how to serve a 750 ml bottle, worth ordering one just for the presentation), and chain favorites, Mellow Mushroom and the Yardhouse. Don’t be scared of the chains since each of them features plenty of good beer that we don’t get in Arizona. If you are an event person, there is plenty for you to do. Highlights include a series of mystery tappings at Euclid Hall, the Elysian Pumpkin Beer Festival at Falling Rock and an Oskar Blues Specialty Beer Tapping at Freshcraft. If you just aren’t finished with beer by Saturday night, Falling Rock will have their traditional specialty New Belgium tapping. This year, Falling Rock owner Chris Black went to the brewery and blended his own version of La Folie, along with Lauren and Eric Salazar from New Belgium. All three blends will be sampled and a winner will be selected. Oh, and expect Chris to also break out several other New Belgium specialties from his private cellar. Sounds like we are the winners with this one. Alaskan Brewing will be celebrating their 25th Anniversary on Friday night at 11 PM, also at Falling Rock and look for several special events with Boulevard Brewing.

If you want to hit the charity trifecta during your visit, put everything else on hold for Friday. Start out in the morning at FreshCraft with the Beer for Boobies Brunch. for the fourth annual Denver Rare Beer Tasting. This is an outstanding tasting to support the Pints for Prostates organization and features a collection of rare beers presented by the brewers. Specialties include Big Sky 2006 Buckin’ Monk Chardonnay Tripel, The Bruery The Wanderer Dark Sour Ale and Lost Abbey/Port Brewery Deliverance. Now a decision must be made, continue on to the GABF session or take a nap. Either way you finish up your day of charity at the Ghost Plate and Tap where the Arizona based Beer For Brains Foundation hosts its first ever Colorado Affair. This event will be held on the rooftop and features nothing but rare Colorado beers. Look for Breckenridge Whiskey Barrel Vanilla Porter, Left Hand Beer Week Sauce, Redstone Hoppy the Terroir along with offerings from Ska Brewing, Great Divide, Wynkoop, AC Golden and many more. Twenty beers in all will be served to the 120 guests fortunate enough to enter this event. Now, I told you all about GABF, to tell you this. Arizona is moving into full beer festival season. We will highlight a few of those in coming weeks but mark your calendar now for these events. October 15th has two big events: New Belgium Tour de Fat at the Tempe Town Lake and Taste of Cave Creek at Stagecoach Village in Cave Creek (on both Saturday and Sunday) which will feature fine food from a variety of local restaurants and a nice little beer garden with an assortment of top craft and import beers. October 22nd also brings two events. On the east side of town, don’t miss the Muller – Kuhrs Oktoberfest at Salt River Fields. This is a first year event but promises to quickly be the best Oktoberfest celebration in the Valley (notwithstanding, perhaps the Arizona Society of Homebrewers event held the same day, but that is a private thing so join now to attend that one). For you west side folks, the Peoria Beer Festival is back with year two. Look for great food samples to go with the great beer being offered as you party in the outfield at the Peoria Sports Complex main baseball field. Halloween weekend Continued on Page 44...

Hello everyone, welcome back to the show! Today let’s chat about Racer5 IPA from Bear Republic Brewing Co. Bear Republic is located just north of Santa Rosa, Ca. in Headlsburg and recently celebrated their 15th Anniversary in the business of brewing. Along the way they have picked up numerous awards including a gold medal at the 2009 Great American Beer Festival in the American Strong Pale Ale Category and Best of Show at the 2009 Colorado State Fair. In addition, in 2010 they placed at number 43 in the Brewer’s Association TOP 50 Breweries in the country. Not too Shabby eh?

Racer 5 IPA, a West Coast Tradition

Now the beer: Racer5 IPA is a full bodied beer brewed with American pale and crystal malts then heavily bittered with Chinook, Cascade, Columbus and citrusy Centennial hop varieties. It pours cloudy golden amber with a white frothy head and wonderful retention and lacing. At 7% ABV. and 75 IBUs this little gem borders on the Imperial or Double category and delivers with big mouth feel, beautiful citrusy resinous bittering and a slightly sweet finish. It scores a heady 99 out of 100 on Ratebeer.com and deserves every point. This beer has far more balance than one might expect from a West Coast IPA and would pair nicely with Cajun fish dishes as well as spicy sausage, German brats with stone ground mustard or an Overstuffed BLT.Yes I know, bacon again, but I just can’t help it! I have almost scientifically concluded that man can live on Beer and Bacon alone!

PHOENIX’S NEWEST CRAFT BEER BREWERY OPENS ITS DOORS SEPT 27TH FOR BREWERY TOURS AND ONSITE RETAIL Fulfilling Local Beer Sales Rep’s Longtime Brewery Ownership Dream The owners of The Phoenix Ale Brewery have announced the opening of a new brewery located three miles east of downtown Phoenix at 3002 East Washington Street. The brewery, bottling facility, administrative offices and visitor center are housed in a 15,700-square-foot building on 1.1 acres of land directly adjacent to the Phoenix Metro light rail system. The company has selected Alliance Beverage Distributing Company for their statewide distribution, and the brewery’s first beer – its flagship FRETZY’s UNFILTERED ALE - is currently shipping out to a variety of retail locations, including Bevmo, Total Wine & More, AJ’s, Basha’s, Tops & Sun Devil Liquors, as well as Arizona restaurants and pubs. FRETZY’s UNFILTERED ALE is also available at Chase Field, where it recently debuted at the Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Phoenix. The successful launch of the new brewing company is the result of

Co-Owner Greg Fretz’s long-held ambition to own a brewery. “I was a beer sales guy for fifteen years selling other people’s beer, but I always dreamed of having my own brewery right here in Phoenix,” says Fretz. Fretzy’s Unfiltered Ale was named in honor of its founder, affectionately known in the industry as Fretzy. The Brewery will showcase its ales to the public in a new Visitor Center. The brewery will conduct brewery tours and beer tastings, as well as selling beer “to go” in bottles, growlers (a 64oz glass container), 15.5 gallon kegs and 5.17 gallon kegs. Brewery tours will be held weekdays at 4 pm and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 pm. The Brewery Shop will be open from noon to 5 pm weekdays and noon to 3 pm weekends. The brewery has a current annual brewing capacity of 4,800 barrels (31 gallons per barrel), but is designed for an eventual capacity of 25,000 barrels. “Arizona needs more breweries,” comments Hancock. “There are currently about 26 breweries in the state, which may sound like a lot, but states like Washington and Oregon have two and three times as many. Four and a half million barrels of beer are consumed in the state every year, but more than 99% is brewed elsewhere. Local breweries like ours ensure that the economic benefits of brewing, particularly the jobs created, accrue to the state.”

on The CW Thomas Dekker knows that a lot of people who saw him in his last two major projects – as flamboyant Lance Loud in the HBO film “Cinema Verite” and as a bisexual college student in Gregg Araki’s “Kaboom” – are wondering what the young actor is doing in “The Secret Circle,” The CW’s new Thursday occult drama about a coven of teenage witches. “Honestly, I find that any of these gives me a joy and a challenge in a different way,” he explains. “After some of the bold choices I made over the last two years, I wanted to do something with more mass appeal, something that is pleasing to a larger audience.” He was drawn to his “Secret Circle” role of Adam Conant because the character has the kind of “duality” he always looks for in a role. “It’s interesting to play this very masculine, very ‘American’ strong guy who is trying to keep order in this group and is not out so much for himself,” Dekker says. “He’s a simple guy from a simple town, but on top of that he is very in tune with these abilities and powers he was born with, and in order to conduct those properly, you have to be in tune with nature. You have to be gentle and spiritual and sensitive, so there were two opposing things there that you don’t often see in television, particularly in male roles.” Having a steady “day job” also affords Dekker the opportunity to explore his interests in other endeavors such as music, photography, writing and directing. In fact, during his hiatus from “Circle,” Dekker hopes to begin shooting a gritty indie film he wrote and directs about young people pursuing celebrity in Hollywood. He says it’s “graphic,” so don’t look for that on The CW anytime soon.

By Teresina Vejar The KUPD Red, White and UFest – the 10 year anniversary of Homberg’s Morning Sickness started at 1:30pm on a Sweltering Saturday afternoon in September at Firebird Raceway. Sure, we were basking in a brisk 106 degrees with not a cloud in sight – But the lineup was amazing with no “crappy” bands to sit through, plus the reasonably priced refreshments and plethora of vendors to browse through, left a good mark on the day. A Good Thing: Relief from above – at 5:30pm, the sought after clouds we had hoped for arrived to block the sun. Not such a Good Thing: Those same dark clouds opened up and torrents of rain pelted everyone for a solid ten minutes - Thank goodness for the bleachers, because I didn’t feel like melting before I could see FFDP.

But regardless of the late start time – we did not have to worry about any curfew - Because having this event on the Indian reservation meant that the night was not about to end early like it might have at another venue. The band that we had waited all night to perform played for a solid hour and a half. It was the most frenzied and heated crowd I have seen in a long while. Five Finger Death Punch has a way of riling up the fans with their onstage performance and Ivan Moody’s heartfelt speech about his life, dreams and way of life inspired the whole crowd amidst the hard tunes. They graced us with a taste of their up and coming new CD ‘American Capitalist’ which is scheduled to be released on October 11. You can listen to a sample of it for free from their website at fivefingerdeathpunch.com entitled “Under and Over It.” Overall, despite the untimely and unwanted bad weather, the Ufest was an amazing experience and I cannot wait to attend the next one.

It’s been three whole years since the W’s Fashion Forward Series was established and those of us who have been should be thankful for it. Without fashion events such as the ones held here some Thursdays, we’d have to rely more heavily on the internet for the latest fashion trends—and God knows we already spend too much time in front of a glowing computer screen or smart phone. Thursday marks the start of the weekend for us nightlife folk so instead of staying in and absorbing the idiocy of Jersey Shore, come out and admire the fall line of one of fashion’s biggest names, Betsey Johnson. Even if you’re not audacious enough to rock her brightly-colored, popinspired, heavily-embellished creations, watching beautiful models strut the new line titled, He loves me, he loves me not, should be entertaining enough. Add a few delicious W martinis in the mix as you view the poolside show, and you got your night made. Perhaps sculptor, David Rogers, had a similar idea when he designed his Larger than Life exhibit at the garden where normally tiny bugs are transformed into huge insects that loom over the fauna and the people that would normally stomp on them. Alas! Insects and humans coexist in beautifully awkward fashion under a moon lit sky! Yup, major nerd alert going on right now. This Friday,

the Desert Botanical Garden will be holding a moonlit affair, making it their first event of the season. As you admire giant insects and our beautiful desert landscape, food vendors serving all you can eat gourmet treats like petite crab cake with remoulade, decadent brownies and other nosh, will ease your air conditioning withdrawals. Feathered dancers, acrobatic performers, and fire acts from Scandalesque will charm you into thinking you were on your couch watching TV. The silence will be cut by eclectic blues band, Big Nick and the Gila Monsters while Beta State and Super Stereo will reawaken your dance moves. DJ Seduce will tempt you with world beats as you stroll under the stars. So you won’t be frightened in the dark, DBG will welcome you with a glowing cocktail served in a glass that is yours to keep as a torch throughout the grounds and to your car (or cab) for the way home. I was too, but when you think about it, all it takes is 1 wrong button pushed or 1 wrong digit typed. Approximately 2.8 million death reports are processed thru the Social Security Administration each year; at least 14,000 -- or one in every 200 deaths -- are incorrectly entered into its Death Master File. That averages out to 38 life-altering mistakes a day. The Inspector General, which oversees the Social Security Administration, discovered that the Death Master File contained 36,657 death entries between May 2007 and April 2010 for people who were very much alive. “It is unfortunate, but some of the death data that we post to our records ... proves to be wrong and we correct it as soon as possible,” said administration spokesman Mark Hinkle. “Usually the error was inadvertently caused because of a human typing error when death information was entered into a computer system.” This inaccurate information is then sold to the public, as well as to banks and credit bureaus. Those who are declared dead not only lose their ability to apply for credit or receive benefits, but they are also at a high risk for identity theft now that all of their personally-identifying information has been made public. In one review, the Inspector General found that months after the Social Security Administration deleted incorrect information from the database; the personally identifiable information of 28% of the individuals was still publicly available on at least one other web site. More Americans are being accidentally killed off by the Social Security Administration every day, which contains: Social Security numbers, names, birth dates, death dates, zip codes and last-known residences of more than 87 million deceased Americans. WHAT TO DO IF YOU’VE BEEN DECLARED DEAD The Identity Theft Resource Center recommends that you do the following: First, to find out who reported you as dead, get a copy of your death certificate from the county clerk’s office where the death was reported, fill out a form to amend the certificate. The death certificate will include the name of whoever reported your death. This person is typically contacted to sign the amendment as well. To remove your name from the database, you need to make an appointment at your local Social Security office. Bring a photo ID and the certified copy of the amended death certificate, the ITRC said. Once you correct the information with Social Security, you may need to contact your bank, credit bureaus and any other entities that are under the impression that you’re deceased to let them know you are in fact very much alive. Social Security’s Hinkle said it’s typically easier to fix than this. “It normally involves seeing the person face-to-face and verifying some form of current ID,” he said, adding that the administration occasionally writes letters that people can present to other entities to prove they are alive.
