Both one-act Italian operas shocked late 19th-century audiences with their hyper-realistic and gritty portrayals of tragic love and the human condition. Arizona Opera’s production of this dramatic duo promises to thrill opera-lovers and newcomers alike with emotionally charged music (arias and scenes made familiar through the films The Godfather Part III, Raging Bull and The Untouchables) as well as an outstanding cast and production team. “This spectacular double bill is loved the world over for its ultimate passion and heart-on-sleeve music-making,” says Arizona Opera General Director Scott Altman. “We are thrilled to bring this traditional production with world-class talent as we launch into an exciting season of popular favorites and new productions.” Set in 19th-century Sicily, Cavalleria Rusticana tells the story of four jealous lovers. When Turiddu returns to his village from the army, he discovers that his fiancée Lola has married the prosperous Alfio. Abandoned by Turiddu, the innocent Santuzza seeks the ultimate revenge, drawing the opera to a chilling dramatic and musical climax. Arizona Opera’s new production of Cavalleria Rusticana stars internationally acclaimed tenor Joseph Wolverton as Turiddu and renowned soprano Lori Phillips as

Santuzza. In a recent review, Opera News noted how Phillips “dominates the stage” and radiates “luxurious warmth.”

In Pagliacci, life imitates art as a traveling theater troupe performs acts of heartbreak and deception both on and off the stage. Metropolitan Opera tenor Allan Glassman follows up his great success last season in Arizona Opera’s production of Verdi’s Otello with the role of Canio, the company’s clown who despite public humiliation must continue to play the betrayed fool. Among the character’s famous arias is the powerful “Vesti la giubba.” Rising soprano Kelly Kaduce makes her company debut as Canio’s unfaithful wife Nedda. The stage director for this “Cav and Pag” double bill is Kay Walker Castaldo. Known for her insightful and nuanced interpretations, Castaldo directed Arizona Opera’s “brilliantly intelligent and innovative” 2010 production of Carmen (The Arizona Republic). Arizona Opera Principal Conductor Joel Revzen conducts. All performances are accompanied by English supertitles. Cavalleria Rusticana is the first of two new productions by the company this season. The sparkling new sets, which depict a rustic Sicilian village, were locally designed and built with the help of the Arizona Theatre Company. “This is example of another great Arizona collaboration,” says Arizona Opera General Director Scott Altman. Who knew, right? However, it is this critic’s belief that a cap was placed on ‘Real Steel’s’ creative juices... er... greases by the understandably marketable decision to make it a family flick. Such an approach should have been saved for ‘Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots: The Movie’ which, by the way, is a different project altogether. Again, who knew?” Grade: B

Harris Poll’s 2011 Favorite Actors has Denzel Washington at number 2!

In “Amigo,” playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5, Joel Torre plays a Filipino leader who must decide whether to keep the peace with the American troops occupying his village or join the insurgency with his brother and son. The historical war drama was written and directed by legendary independent filmmaker John Sayles. “We shot on the island of Bahol, which is in the Visayas region of the Philippines. It is a very quiet island. There are very few airplane flights each day so we were shooting sync sound, which is unusual for a Filipino movie. The only thing we had to deal with was the most popular sport there – chicken fighting. Everybody was raising these fighting cocks that don’t wait until sun-up to crow. We had to relocate a lot of roosters so they wouldn’t be all over the soundtrack.

‘Where is Robert Fisher?’** On April 10, 2001 Robert Fisher slaughtered his entire family in Scottsdale, Ariz. then completely

“It needed to have what it indeed turned out to have, which is a really clear and new concept so it did not look like something just mocked up to make money,” says Craven, crediting screenwriter Kevin Williamson with using new technology to legitimize the slasher flick to a new generation. “I was waiting for something like that to come.” “Scre4m’s” story picks up on the 15th anniversary of the Woodsboro murders – a day that Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) decides to return to her hometown as part of a publicity tour for her new book. However, she quickly regrets that decision when pair of young women is killed in a frighteningly familiar fashion. “It was very much a sense of a family reassembling to have fun again,” says Craven of the opportunity to work with returning members of the cast and crew for the film, which is now available on Blu-ray and DVD. “We have a communication that is very deep now and a great appreciation of each other as people.”

As Hawkins explains, the character is the embodiment of repression and frustration – a little fireball with absolutely no form of expression for release. “Jill was real fun to play because she is so uptight; everything is bottled up,” adds the actress, noting that writer/director Richard Ayoade helped her discover how to pare down her characterization and be small, so to speak. “He loves subtly. Blackjack Tournaments A Great Bet!

for every 25 tournaments played, creating a positive expectation for the player – That’s a terrific bet in any casino.

If you have ever played in a blackjack tournament – You understand that for a small amount of money for the entry fee, you have an opportunity to make some serious cash, if you make the final table of 5.

Basic rules for blackjack tournaments;

And making that final it is even sweeter if the casino adds money to the prize pool - let’s say they add $500 making this a positive expectation event, and easily one of the best bets in any casino. It doesn’t really matter what skill level you are at as a blackjack player - because based on just sheer luck, if you enter these tournaments once a week or once a month, in the long run you will come out ahead – Let me explain. Here’s the math Let’s say the tournament has an entry fee of $40 and is limited to the first 125 players to sign up. That would consist of 25 qualifying tables with five players seated at each table. In order to advance to the semi final round, you have to finish first at your table with the most chips at the end of…let’s say, twenty-one hands in the qualifying round. In the Semi final round, there would be 25 players remaining (5 tables of 5 players each), and at the end of another twentyone hands - the player with the most chips at each of those five tables will advance to the championship or “money round”. Your chance of making the money round based on luck alone, without any skill is 1 in 25. In other words you will get in the money on average once in every 25 tries. The prize money is made up of 125 entry fees of $40 or $5,000, plus the $500 the casino might add to the pot for a total of $5,500. The money round will have an average payout of $1,100 per player since there are five players who will make it to the championship round. If you enter 25 tournaments at $40 per tournament, it will cost you $1,000. The odds are - you will make it to the money round 1 time out of 25 tries by luck alone with an expected average payout of $1,100 - So, in theory you will make $100

Let’s say players start with $1,000 in tournament chips and can bet from $10 to $1,000 on any hand. If a player runs out of chips they are eliminated. Each player takes a turn betting first and players must bet in order. There is a chip count before the final hand, so everyone knows how many chips all of the other players have. At the end of 21 hands, the top player at each table advances to the semi finals. In the semi-finals (25 players remaining - 5 tables of 5) – The winner from each of those tables moves on to the Final Table. The “Final Five” can either “Chop” the prize money or play it off for 1st thru 5th place money.

Tournament Strategy There is no one way to win a tournament. Sometimes the players who bet big get a large lead and no one can catch them. Other times you can win a round by losing the least. The point is - most of the time luck determines who advances to the next round. Blackjack Tournaments are a lot of fun to play, even if you don’t make it to the final table – and the small entry fee it is cheap entertainment for several hours of fun. Culinary Festival will take place between noon and 6:00 p.m. at AJ Chandler Park West (3 S. San Marcos Place) between Arizona Ave. and Buffalo St. TASTE. Chandler’s Culinary Festival will give patrons the unique opportunity to taste, savor and enjoy the delicacies of Chandler’s finest eating establishments set within a casual, comfortable and festive atmosphere. The event will showcase local eateries and restaurants, including AJ’s Café at San Marcos, BLD, BJ’s Brewhouse, Cathy’s Rum Cakes, Coach & Willies, Dos Gringos, El Zocalo, Hungry Monk, Iguana Macks, Jimmy & Joe’s Pizza, Kokopelli Winery & Bistro, Latitude Eight, Majerle’s Sports Grill, Murphy’s Law, NYPD Pizza, Paletas Betty, Red White & Brew, SanTan Brewing Company, Serranos Mexican Restaurant,

Shimogamo, Spicy Pickle, Thai Dressing, The Keg, The Living Room, The Sushi Room, Von Hanson Meats & Spirits, and Yolis Café. More restaurants will be added and announced in the coming weeks. General admission tickets are $35 for online, pre-sale purchase and $45 the day of the event. Admission includes samplings from all 30 restaurants and 12 drink tickets. This is a 21-and-older event. TASTE. Chandler’s Culinary Festival will introduce an exciting new component to elevate patron’s experience. Three TASTE Experience Lounges – a Spirit Lounge, a Craft Beer Lounge and a Wine Lounge – will feature music, cooking demonstrations, and educational classes. All Experience Lounges are air conditioned; tickets are $10 for admission to each lounge.

Executive Chefs of Le Cordon Bleu and former Arizona Cardinal Michael Bankston will put on cooking demonstrations inside one of the TASTE. Experience Lounges. The Oktoberfest @ Tempe Town Lake marks the area’s official end to summer and is presented by Tempe Sister City with the assistance of 2,000 volunteers. We all invite you, your families and friends to the first festival of the fall season and the largest Oktoberfest in the southwest. The best news for the 2011 event is German Bier! For years the question of the weekend has been, “Where is the German Bier?” With the help of our three local distributors: Hensley, Alliance and Republic National the question has been answered big time. The 39th Oktoberfest @ Tempe Town Lake will present 22 Gernan beers with many from the heart of Bavaria. Included are brews from the two oldest continuously operating breweries in the world. Both the Weihenstephan and Weltenburg breweries claim mid 11th-century founding dates. We are especially proud to host Weltenburger, for the first time in Arizona, hailing from Tempe’s sister city of 35 years, Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany. With so many new German beers on the menu we have arranged for taste testing on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. From 12-3 PM, when attendance has yet to blossom and the atmosphere is still casual, for $20.00 you can taste test eight different 4 oz. samples. The four German beer tents will be located in the main amphitheater in front of the Weltenburger Bier Town Lake Stage.

Like to run or walk? The Frank Kush Youth Foundation and the Oktoberfest @ Tempe Town Lake have partnered to produce the 20th annual Frank Kush Oktoberfest Family Fun Foot Race. Named in honor of the legendary Arizona State University football coach and College Football Hall-of-Famer, the 5-mile run, 5K run/walk and 1-mile run/walk will provide additional Oktoberfest oomppah-pah and further solidify the charitable work of both organizations. Dare to run in your lederhosen!! Did I say a free Michelob Ultra at the end of the race? Speaking of races, don’t miss the Sunday afternoon Dachshund races, aka, “Weiner Mania”. Sponsored by Arizona Adopt a Greyhound there are 32 purebred weiner dogs registered to run. What a hoot! After watching these guys sprint the 50 yard course you will no longer ask, “what hoppin’ to your legs little buddy? Photos of race entries available at www.arizonaadoptagreyhound.org We say it every year - Best Music Lineup Ever! The only exclamation we can add for the 2011 lineup is “Again!!” Mogollon returns for the 21st year and headlines the 9.5 hour Valley Buick GMC Dealers Saturday country concert including Cadillac Angels along with Chad Freeman & Redline. If you have not seen Dry River Yacht Club - be there for a sound that will push the pure entertainment limits of anything you have heard. Oktoberfest favorites Crown Kings, Keltic Cowboys, Cold Shott & the Hurricanes will again provide high energy, high octane entertainment. Of course, the non-stop polka stage will be up an running for polka and Chicken Dance lovers.

THE GREAT AMERICAN BEER FESTIVAL In Review…. Fun and merriment… and beer, lots and lots of beer. That describes this year’s Great American Beer Festival which concluded this past Saturday in Denver. 466 breweries from every state brought their beer to the Colorado Convention Center where it was sampled, evaluated, paired with food and enjoyed by the 49,000 people who were fortunate enough to get tickets in the week or so after they went on sale. Of course, that pretty much describes every year at the GABF as it is known.

first. A record 2,378 different beers were served by those 466 breweries and over 3,900 were judged in the competition that surrounds the festival. It took 169 judges to judge the 83 categories that were available to enter and each category averaged 48 beers with the American Style IPA category being the most popular with 175 entries, reflecting the continuing trend towards this style. Somewhere along the line over 3,000 volunteers logged around 54,000 volunteer hours to make this event successful. In exchange for their average 18 hours of unpaid work, they each got a ticket to a session at next year’s event. By the numbers, the 30th Annual GABF was a huge success.

There was the Brewer’s Studio which featured an opportunity to listen to the brewers talk about some of the background and give insight into their breweries. The annual Pro-Am Competition gave home brewers a chance to have their beer brewed professionally and served on the floor of the event (a great place to find some special one-off beers). The Arizona Brewers Guild was featured as one of the twelve selected breweries in the Support Your Local Brewery section of the event. The “You Be The Judge” booth let amateur beer geeks try their hand at discerning off flavors in beer along with a certified judge, and finally, there was the Oskar Blues Silent Disco which features people dancing to music that only they can hear through their wireless headphones. Besides the Brewers Guild table which rotated some fine local beers, several Arizona breweries were in attendance. First time entrant SanTan Brewing won a silver medal

free entry New Grist, Le Terroir from New Belgium, Expedition Stout from Bell’s brewery, Alaskan Smoked Porter, Mama’s Lil YellaPils from canning revolutionary Oskar Blues(who also won for Old Chub and their Deviant Dale’s an IPA version of their first beer Dale’s Pale Ale), Alesmith IPA (which got a second medal for Old Numbskull Barleywine), Brother David’s Double from Anderson Valley, and SKA Brewing Steeltoe Stout. Outside of the festival the party continued. There were well over 100 events, tappings, parties and the like to satisfy those without tickets. Highlights included the Denver Rare Beer Tasting which benefited Pints for Prostates and the Colorado Affair which was put on by locally based charity, The Beer for Brains Foundation. breweries Breckenridge and Great Divide pulled out the stops hosting a nonstop stream of festival goers while Denver’s favorite dive bar, El Chapultepec continued on as it always has, as if there was nothing special going on, just great jazz, a casual atmosphere and cheap drinks. Besides nationally recognized Falling Rock Tap House and The Cheeky Monk, FreshCraft and Euclid Hall proved that they could keep great beer bars running for multiple years. Mellow Mushroom was busy all week as well as the Yard House which opened last November just after GABF. The Yard House featured several great beers on tap that you don’t see in Arizona including Russian River Damnation and Victory Golden Monkey. The real surprises were two newcomers to the Denver scene Ghost Plate and Tap as well as Ale House at Amato made big splashes with both great beer and great food. The latter was packed all week as the 40+ handles and rooftop patio drew attendees across the pedestrian bridges at the end of 16th

Street. What a great view of the city, especially at night and the service was amazing. One of the biggest things to come from this week in Denver was the announcement and release of Left Hand Milk Stout Nitro in bottle form. Eschewing the widget that other nitro beers use in package, they have developed a method of capturing this creamy draft favorite

in a bottle. The release party was packed and not one person walked away with anything but great things to say about this new effort from the boys in Longmont. Look for this to hit Arizona in February. That was this year’s GABF in a nutshell…a very large nutshell. Every year could be summed up the same way; a great time with us already looking forward to next year… although we could use a little rest first. Until next time…

A Beer Judge’s Beer!

Hello again everyone, I hope last week’s review of Racer 5 IPA ticked all the right boxes. This week let’s chat about Speedway Stout from Ale Smith Brewing located in San Diego, CA. Ale Smith took roots in 1995 when accomplished home brewer Peter Zien decided to take his love of brewing to the next level. He has won over 400 medals in various beer competitions and is currently San Diego’s only BJCP “Grand Master” Level One Beer Judge. Peter and Ale Smith have nurtured a strong relationship with local area home brewers and sponsor many events promoting the cause.

SPEEDWAY STOUT

Now back to the beer. Speedway Stout is an Imperial Stout that weighs in at an impressive 12% ABV and is brewed with several pounds of Ryan Bros. coffee for a little extra kick! It pours completely opaque with an off-white head and just a touch of lacing as the glass empties. The flavour profile starts with strong coffee and dark chocolate notes then fades to a multitude of toasty roasted full bodied flavor. Warmth from the high alcohol content lightens up the mouth feel but you won’t fool your taste buds, this is a big boy brew! Over the years it has acquired a multitude of awards including Silver in its category at the California State Fair, Brewer’s Choice and People’s Choice at the San Diego Strong Ale Festival and a World Beer Championships Platinum medal. WOW, what a beer! Great food pairings include classic oysters, sweet and spicy BBQ and Black Forest Cake. I love this stout with large east coast salty/briny oysters, talk about Great Drunk Food! “OCCUPY WALLSTREET”; A MOVEMENT WITH LEGS PART 1

It takes a ton of water to make a pound of refined sugar. All bodily functions stop during a sneeze, including your heart.

The purpose of Occupy Wall Street is simple: gather as diverse a group of demonstrators to make a peaceful statement about government corruption and the privileging of big business and the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans in policy making. Yet, if one were to read the New York Times article published Friday or see the front page of Sunday morning’s New York Post, one would think that Occupy Wall Street was disorganized and full of naïve rabble-rousers looking to riot for rioting sake. However, these portrayals could not be further from the truth. I had been downtown at the beginning of this past week to see for myself, simply because I had heard little about the evolution of the demonstrations in the media. To say that the demonstrators are “only hippies and radicals pining for 1968” would be a gross misstatement. Moreover and critical for all to understand, this has nothing to do with the 1960s. It is in no way connected to Grateful Dead, bell bottom yore and Flower Power lore. It is all about concerned and informed Americans. People, Americans who come from diverse backgrounds: environmentalists, feminists, former and current Wall Street bankers, traders and brokers, anarchists, socialists, major union support; steel, healthcare, transport, members of the LGBTQ community, teachers, students, Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, people of all colors, Christians, Jews, Muslims, Atheists, working and retired NYPD police officers, members of the FDNY, journalists, musicians, photographers...the list could go on and on. The organizational structure is quite impressive, they are intelligent and prepared with process, system, objectives and schedules. It’s refreshing, inspiring and informative to experience in person. People are distressed, and this movement is growing organically. The fact that 400 Americans have the wealth equal to 154 million Americans, that our economy is worse than that of the Middle Age feudal economy is a fact worth more than noting. In the Middle Ages, two percent of the people owned 90 percent of the wealth. We’re in a situation where one percent own 95 percent of the wealth. We’re worse off than those who lived during the Middle Ages. Unlike the Middle Ages, the demonstration is based on consensus. To make announcements, a “sound check” would take place. Whoever wished to speak would yell, “Sound Check!” to gain the attention of those present. The speaker would then share four- or five-words and those around would loudly repeat what was being said to pass along the message. First Friday Night Live Season Premiere at The Firehouse

It’s the first First Friday of the season this week which means it’s the ideal time to stroll along the sidewalks of downtown Phoenix admiring the local art in fine weather. For those who not only like to enjoy the art but also the bar scene downtown, here’s an interesting event you may not want to miss after you’re done with your judging and admiring of the creative works on display. It’s the premiere of FFNL, a show featuring musical acts, performances, stand-ups, and sketch comedy by local funny people or people who think they’re funny because their friends and family encourage them but really, they aren’t funny. Maybe they’re hilarious. Like you, I’ll have no idea until I attend. It is their first show of the year after all and I expect it to be good. I suppose it depends on your type of humor anyway. At least you’ll be able to relate to the topics which mostly revolve around Arizona themes and current events. You’ll just have to stop by and determine whether these individuals will make you spontaneously utter sounds and cause movement that expresses amusement rather than contempt. Spoken word artist, Ernesto Moncada will be the first guest host of the season while Wooden Indian, a local dance party blues band will perform. If you don’t end up attending this Friday, perhaps you can catch the live newscasts on their website and make a presence at the November show. Either way, after the high-schoolers, that now seem to flock to First Fridays in the masses, have gone to bed and the artists pack away their unsold items, you’ll need someplace to go. The Roxy Lounge in Scottsdale Calling all you hipsters who love to hate Scottsdale for its seemingly pretentious

attitude: there’s a new hip kid in town and she’s named after her Sunset Strip mother, Roxy. The beautiful thing about Roxy is that she is not just a music venue, she is also a lounge that likes to cater to the aesthetically pleasing types that Scottsdale is so fond of representing. This recently opened lounge won’t support those who aren’t enthusiastic about hearing new, live music because this place is all about it and will be importing in bands and musicians from L.A. on the regular. If you’ve never heard of The Roxy Theatre on Sunset Strip, maybe you’ve heard of Schwayze or Mike Posner who can both credit Cisco Adler, a talented music producer and writer who now co-owns Scottsdale’s newest venue/ club hybrid with his brother, Nic. Nic has managed the Roxy for 15 years in Los Angeles so we can trust that he probably knows what he’s doing. This Friday, Love and a .38 and Frequis will perform so expect rock and roll vibes to be flowing in along with the booze. Feel free to get bottle service and a table here too. If you’re one who needs to do a little more than head nodding to the beat, don’t fret—there’s a dance floor as well. Cater to me; Ladies Night is on Tuesdays and we get half off our drinks! Visually pleasing with the wood floors, dim lighting, and the romanticism just shines in Bobby’s. Come between the hours of 4-7pm to take advantage of something you will not regret. 7122 E. It can be hard to find happy hour on the weekends but every Saturday and Sunday from 2-6pm every appetizer on the menu is $5. They are known for being a local music venue, so if you enjoy live music-even better. The atmosphere here is definitely a laid back spot. Had a long day?
