WALK THE PINK CARPET! LEGALLY BLONDE THE MUSICAL OFFICIALLY KICKS OFF BROADWAY PALM’S ELEVENTH SEASON! Walk the pink carpet as Mesa goes blonde when the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre presents the long anticipated Southwest Regional Premier of LEGALLY BLONDE THE MUSICAL, playing now through November 12, 2011. Sorority star Elle Woods doesn’t take “no” for an answer. So when her boyfriend dumps her for someone more “serious,” Elle puts down the credit card, hits the books, and sets out to go where no Delta Nu has gone before: Harvard Law. Along the way, Elle proves that being true to yourself never goes out of style. In its first year on Broadway, LEGALLY BLONDE THE MUSICAL earned seven 2007 Tony Award nominations, ten 2007 Drama Desk Award Nominations, a 2007 Outer Critics Circle Award and the chorus of the musical was honored by Actors’ Equity Association’s Advisory Committee on Chorus Affairs (ACCA) with the first ever ACCA Award. The musical also ranked in the top ten list

of the most requested Ticketmaster “Arts & Theatre Events” for 2007. The role of Elle Woods is played by local actress Maris Fernandes who recently starred as “Logainne” in Broadway Palm’s production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Winner of the 2009 “The Search for Arizona’s Own Elle Woods” contest at ASU’s Gammage auditorium, Maris is Elle Woods! Broadway Palm newcomers Kara Dombrowski and Billy Casey play Elle’s best friend Margot and boyfriend Warner Huntington III. The role of Emmett Forrest is played by Sal Pavia. Directed by ariZoni award winner M. Seth Reines and choreographed by Amy Marie McCleary, Legally Blonde officially kicks off Broadway Palm’s Eleventh Season. Music and lyrics are by both Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin, and the book is by Heather Hach. The production features scenic design by Christine Peters, costume design by Mary Atkinson, lighting design by Russell A. Thompson, orchestrations by JR McAlexander and sound design by Chris Kockler. Fifteen others round out this exceptional cast and production crew, including Jesse Berger, Amy Burgmaier, Ericka S. Covington, Michael Dinneen, Victoria Fairclough, Zoe Blair Friedman, Matthew Helton,

TICKETS to Legally Blonde can be purchased online at BroadwayPalmWest.com, by phone, (480) 325-6700, or at the Box Office, located at 5247 E. Brown Road in Mesa.

Joseph: “‘Footloose’ is fun and infectious but this critic personally prefers the ‘Step Up’ franchise any day of the week. After all, any one of the three ‘Step Up’ installments is much more lively and illustrates artistic expression through dance better than this remake of the 1984 film starring Kevin Bacon. On the other hand, in a year without a ‘Step Up’ sequel, ‘Footloose’ will most certainly suffice – thanks especially to actor Kenny Wormald’s old-fashioned movie star vibe.” Grade: C

I hate that inference, this ‘retelling’ of theme of the Kevin Bacon starrer of 84 brings to the forefront the social issues of today (as did the one of old for that time frame) with a nicely balanced view for both parents and teens, and director Craig Brewer (co-writer of the screenplay) uses the music & dance moves of today with just a hint of the old with a message for both the young and old that ‘communication’ the key, while Kenny Wormald shines with a James Dean ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ persona as the star.” Grade: B

this religious film spiritual and uplifting, without being preachy.” Grade: AJoseph: “Writer/director Emilio Estevez’s motion picture ‘The Way’ – which the filmmaker cited at a recent Q-and-A as being independent in spirit but certainly not small in scope – is a joyous journey. The only downside is that ‘The Way’ will make you want to really walk the ‘El Camino de Santiago’ for yourself so that you, too, can experience the remarkable personal transformation exhibited by star Martin Sheen’s character in the film. Then again, simply seeing something this spiritually stimulating is exceptionally enriching in and of itself. ” Grade: B

Soundbite Spotlight The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf movies recently released in theaters.

Harris Poll’s 2011 Favorite Actresses has Julia Roberts at number 2! Stan: “The basic theme of the nightmare for any of us who are parents of possibly having a child die before us is aptly addressed by writer/director Emilio Estevez, the real life son of Martin Sheen who stars as the father in ‘The Way’.With the backdrop of the father completing the journey started by his son of the walk of ‘El Camino de Santiago’where his son lost his life, the heart of the story ispsychologically therapeutic for us parents viewing as the father makes the journey. The other participants in the walk, each dealing with varying issues of their own, unknowingly and invariably provide consolation to each other, notably Deborah Kara Unger’scharacter who brings the father full circle as he seeks the ‘why’, and closure for his tragic loss.” Grade: B Randy: “‘The Way’ is an uplifting journey across ‘El Camino de Santiago’ that you will never forget. The movie is a travelogue worth experiencing on screen that should prompt viewers to book their own trip to France in order to experience the expedition on their own. Director Emilio Estevez’s greatest strength with the film is exposing each of the characters’ flaws, which not only makes them realistic, but also makes

Actors Kenny Wormald and Julianne Hough (‘Footloose’) By Stan Robinson “What Craig (Brewer, thedirector) wanted to do that was different in this film is to bridge that gap and make sure

that people weren’t just against the small town in the movie, and since he’s a parent with kids there’s a real family focus, which is brought out through what Dennis Quaid’s character is preaching about. Everyone can identify with the thought of being safe and taken care of, and finding that balance without thoughts of that your soul is going to go to the devil, its more about protection and being safe. A great thing about the movie is that we were actually shooting in those rural areas with a feeling of a small town, we couldn’t go out to say a restaurant outside of the set because there was nothing around, it wasn’t like we were at a studio and they built it, so it really helped us psychologically because we were in a ‘real’ small town shooting!” – Julianne Hough “For this role as far as shooting, we were in Atlanta for almost a month mainly for dance rehearsals for me and Julianne to learn because we would be shooting all week on the non-dance sequences while the dancers rehearsed in a studio, we would meet up with them on Saturday, one of our two days off, and workout with them throughout the process of shooting. On the other hand the nondance sequences had such a real feel to them because we shot at real locations! Some of places like the dirt track during the face-off with the tractors and school buses race, we were totally immersed in the scene and there was no way not to feel the sceneswith the dirt flying into your lungs, your hair, your nose… It was good not to be in LA with your friends calling every day to hang out, we were way gone into this world and it was great for us and our performances for the film!” – Kenny Wormald

Writer/Director Emilio Estevez and Actor Martin Sheen (‘The Way’) By Joseph J. Airdo “What I think is important about the movie, especially for young people now, is that we are constantly assaulted by the media about how we are is not good enough. We need to be thinner, we need to be prettier, we need to be richer, etc.

But none of that leads to any amount of happiness. What I love about the message at the end of the film is that it basically says it’s OK to be exactly who you are. It’s OK to be broken. I think young people need to have that message reinforced because there are a lot of lost young folks out there who are aspiring to something that is hollow.” – Emilio Estevez “We’re all on a pilgrimage and we learn along the way that we are really not that different from those pilgrims in front of us or those behind us. If we are lucky, we are given enough time to deal with our loss, our pain, our guilt, our frustrations, our fear, our anger, our judgments, our resentments, our disappointments - all of the things that make us human. We must all walk alone but we cannot do it without community. By community, I mean family, friends and extended family. Every other person that you touch is part of your journey. “And that is what I think this film is really about. Along the way, he discovers himself. He becomes himself in a lot of ways that he could never have done without this journey. It’s a physical journey, of course, and it’s long and arduous. But he began to realize that all of our work is an effort to unite the will of the spirit to the work of the flesh. And it doesn’t matter if you are religious or spiritual. As long as you are human, you have to deal with that. Nobody gets out of here on their own.” – Martin Sheen

Bonus Features The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf movies recently released to Blu-ray and DVD.

Director Shawn Ku (‘Beautiful Boy’)

Actor Paul Reubens (‘The Pee-wee Herman Show on Broadway’) By Joseph J. Airdo “I added all of the puppet characters that weren’t in the original stage production that came out of the TV show because I felt like the audience would come see it and go, ‘Where’s Chairy?’ The TV series wasn’t done live like a stage show in any way. We would take 10 days to do an episode. It would take a whole day of shooting and then clever editing to make the puppets look like they could do stuff. For any of those puppets to do things in real time every single performance was extremely challenging. But we had incredible puppeteers, designers and people who were in charge of it all on both coasts.” – Paul Reubens

Writer/Director Tom Provost (‘The Presence’) By Joseph J. Airdo

By Joseph J. Airdo

“It is reactionary to a couple of things that happened. Virginia Tech was a big one. My parents had gone to school there and the shooter was Asian so it touched a chord in my family in a really odd way. A couple of months before that, a good friend died at my home. It was very sudden and completely unexpected but I became a really central figure in his parents’ grief. I spent so much time as a fly on the wall, witnessing how they processed the grief of losing a child that a lot of the small moments sort of fell into this script. Somehow those two things morphed together into this story.” – Shawn Ku

“When I sat down to write it, I thought that if I wrote really great parts maybe I could entice some well-known actors to be in this movie that has such a low budget. I guess it succeeded. Both Mira [Sorvino] and Shane [West] were really excited about the idea of doing something so challenging. Shane has the most difficult part in the movie. He only has two lines – two words. I wouldn’t even let him move, breathe or blink in the first half of the movie. It’s really difficult to have to act just with your eyes and the expression on your face but I thought he did a great job.” – Tom Provost Wonder what movies we movie reviewers look forward to in October 2011? Knowing and Caring

Take the most recent Main Event on November 8, 2010, where unknown 22 year old Jonathan Duhamel took home first prize of $8,944,310. Does it mean he’s better than the likes of Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, John Juanda, Gus Hansen, Dan Harrington, Men “The Master” Nguyen, Phil Hellmuth and a long list of other famous names? NOT AT ALL. However, Duhamel did both know and care about the game in addition to be sitting on top of a horse shoe at the right time. Same thing is true for video poker players, especially those that are casino regulars. Just like with the biggest poker stars, video poker players can be on either end of the bell-shaped curve in the short run. Over time, however, those that play the odds will do significantly better than those who don’t.

Frank Layden, Utah Jazz President, on a former player: “I asked him, ‘Son, what is it with you? Is it ignorance or apathy?’ He said, ‘Coach, I don’t know and I don’t care.’” Poker players are absolutely right when they say if you’re lucky you’ll win, but if it’s not your day a rookie could beat any top-notch player. That’s why the World Series of Poker (WSOP) is so exciting to watch. On any given day an unknown player could win the Main Event instead of one of poker’s greats.

Those Who Know: I often hear people say things like, “My friend is good in math, so he knows which cards to hold”. There are around 2,500,000 possible combinations given a deck of 52 cards - more with wild cards. Some of the plays are very close statistically and, therefore, counterintuitive. For example, in a game of 9/6 Jacks or Better (9/6 JOB) if you’re dealt off-suit ace, king, jack, any five, any six, most would hold ace, king, jack and that’s incorrect. The computer perfect hold is just the king and jack due to the slightly reduced chances of backing into a straight. (Check it out on WinPoker or any other computer-perfect tutorial software if you have any doubts.)

Grab your share of $23,000

&

Those Who Care: I’m referring to smart players who understand their odds at video poker will improve when they select computer accurate holds. Of course, there are no guarantees. The same is true for any form of gambling that has a skill component. Going back to the poker example, even icons like Ivey and Hellmuth take the time to learn the odds on dealt/flopped cards and read the latest books on strategy. That’s true for good blackjack, craps and gin rummy players as well. If you don’t care about holding cards that offer the best odds then you might just as well play slots. There’s nothing wrong with non-skill games since many have such creative bonus rounds that they’re lots of fun. It’s just that if you claim that you like video poker better than games like keno because you have an impact on the outcome then you should learn the key plays of the game. This is especially true for frequently dealt hands like one or two pair; don’t assume it’s the same for every video poker game. One other thing is that you may think that your lack of playing skills has no effect on

The people who know are those who have practiced on tutorial software and the experts who write the computer programs, video poker strategy cards and books. Selfproclaimed “experts” who may have worked in a casino or played a lot of video poker are unable to give correct advice because they are just guessing or copying information from others or the internet. Whether or not their advice is reliable is simply a crap shoot.

October 13th, 2011 - October 19th, 2011 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

others, but you’re mistaken. When people don’t care enough to check the pay schedules, then the casino is much more apt to downgrade pay tables. Let’s say, they change a 9/6 JOB table to an 8/5 or worse yet to a 7/5. (Note that the numbers refer to the return for a full-house and a flush respectively - 9/6 JOB returns 9 for each coin bet for a full-house and 6 for each coin bet for a flush.) Final Thoughts: I love Frank Layden’s quote because it’s so funny; however, there’s sometimes truth to humorous statements. In this case, knowing and caring are key ingredients to playing your best at any given sport and also to having the most favorable odds for any game of chance with a skill component. After all, as my friend Ralph J. Bianco liked to say, “Lady Luck comes to visit…..never to stay”! Linda Boyd ,a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for “Southern Gaming” and “Midwest Gaming and Travel” - Her book, “The Video Poker Edge”, includes free removable pay schedules and her free strategy cards for the most popular games. “OCCUPY WALLSTREET”; A MOVEMENT WITH LEGS PART 2 Any and all decisions made are done so by consensus. All who were considered to be “high risk,” such as children, the disabled, the elderly and pregnant women, had yellow balloons tied to their wrists. Reports that demonstrators were arrested are true: dozens of the protestors were arrested for marching peacefully down Broadway on Saturday afternoon. Young women were sprayed with mace after they had already been quarantined by the NYPD. One young man was violently thrown to the ground by a police officer for trying the film the protest with his iPhone. At approximately 6 p.m. on Saturday, a caravan of NYPD vehicles slowly began to surround Zuccotti Park. Later, when I began to make my way up Broadway I found that the entrances of the nearby subway stations had been mysteriously barricaded. I asked a nearby police officer why the entrances were closed. He told me, “Do yourself a favor and get out of the area before a riot breaks out. “I thought to myself, if there was to be a riot it would not be started by the people in the park. Susan Sarandon spoke at the demonstration saying, “I came down here to educate myself... There’s a huge void between the rich and the poor in this country. On The O’Reilly Factor he remarked of the “occupation” that, “If you put every single left-wing cause into a blender, this is the sludge you’d get.” Political commentator and writer Keith Olbermann criticized mainstream media for failing to cover Occupy Wall Street, saying, “Why isn’t any major news outlet covering this? ... If this was a Tea Party protest in front of Wall Street ..., it’s the lead story on every network newscast.” I think our country needs much more of this kind of public dialogue. Foremost is the building perception among younger Americans that their government has abandoned them and their survivability. One only has to compare legal actions taken, indictments served and felony convictions attained. Therein lies the crux of why these mostly young, hopeful and politically determined activists are now squatting in Liberty Square. They want their government to better protect and serve their futures, and have real and serious reason to believe they have been abandoned. These are genuine issues being voiced by genuinely concerned individuals. As history has shown when people with a voice come together, so do politics and patriotism.

author series, workshops & community events WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12 7pm • JOHN VAILLANT: THE TIGER • New Yorker magazine contributer John Vaillant visits with his chilling national bestseller The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival. Outside a remote village in Russia’s Far East, a man-eating tiger is on the prowl. The tiger isn’t just killing people, it’s murdering them, almost as if it has a vendetta. A team of trackers is dispatched to hunt down the tiger before it strikes again. They know the creature is cunning, injured, and starving, making it even more dangerous. As Vaillant re-creates these extraordinary events, he offers a work of narrative nonfiction that combines a portrait of a stark and mysterious region of the world and its people with the natural history of nature’s most deadly predator. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13 7pm • SCOTT BOLZAN & JOAN BOLZAN: MY LIFE, DELETED • Former NFL athlete Scott Bolzan and his wife, Joan Bolzan, visit to share their memoir, My Life, Deleted. In December 2008, Scott Bolzan slipped, hit his head, and lost consciousness in his office bathroom, suffering one of the most severe cases of permanent retrograde amnesia on record. He later awoke in a hospital with no memory of who he was or how he got there. He didn’t know his wife of twenty-four years, or even what a wife was. He couldn't remember the births of his two children, the daughter he’d lost, his time as an offensive lineman for the Cleveland Browns, or his aviation career. With honesty and humor, the Bolzans share their journey as Scott navigated his way through an unfamiliar world. Their challenges were initially overwhelming, but Scott soon learned to trust his intuition while Joan tapped into a well of patience and resourcefulness she didn’t know she had. Throughout it all, what unfolds—against all odds—is romance, as Scott and Joan fall in love all over again. 7pm • PAJAMA STORYTIME • Children’s education specialist Raimie Manch reads bedtime stories to PJ-clad little ones, engages them with rhymes and chants that develop pre-reading skills, and then lulls them gently to sleep.

GREATFUL TO HAVE A PLACE LIKE MILL AVE. Seven years doesn’t sound like much but in the craft beer history of Mill Avenue in Tempe it is almost a lifetime. Prior to 2004, not much was going on beyond the typical domestic lagers found at every bar in town. Certainly Bandersnatch Brewpub around the corner on 5th Street had opened in the 1980’s and had gone through the metamorphosis from Brewpub to beer bar and finally had closed in 2003. The Jabberwocky inspired bar was a crowd favorite and a great place to catch local live music. If nothing else, it gets credit for being the grandfather of craft beer bars in Arizona. Rio Salado Brewing had their pub on Mill Avenue and are remembered fondly. The current oldest brewery in Arizona, Four Peaks, started a few miles away in 1996 and their beer has been known to

be consumed in more than a few spots on Mill Avenue. And of course Tops has been selling great beer for takeout since before Arizona was a state…at least it seems that way. The opening of their on-premise sight next door called Taste of Tops, was a logical extension of their dedication to craft beer. But, despite forays into craft beer, Mill Avenue has always been an enigma where good beer was concerned. RulaBula has offered a great Irish bar, featuring the expected beers for quite some time, but it still comes down to 2004 as the key year in the growth of craft beer along Mill. That’s when the seeds that had been planted by all those who came before started to sprout. Within a week or two of each other two restaurants opened that would shape the future of craft beer in the Mill Avenue District. A few months

after the students returned to school in October of 2004 Bison Witches opened followed by Tavern on Mill. These two establishments get a great deal of credit for pushing and sometimes pulling craft beer into the forefront.

To enter Bison Witches, you don’t immediately realize that you have walked in to a craft beer mecca. It looks like a typical college lunch/dinner spot…very casual and comfortable with neon signs and other beer themed decorations. As you look a little more closely the tap handles start to come into focus. There is, of course, Blue Moon…after all Phoenix is the number one Blue Moon market in the country. But also pouring there are taps like Anderson Valley Hop Ottin, Left Hand Milk Stout served on nitrogen just like the traditional creamy Irish stouts, Big Sky Moose Drool, Breckenridge Avalanche Amber, and over there on the one tap is SanTan Brewing’s Count Hopula, the first of this fast-growing brewery’s seasonal offerings. This has always been their philosophy, offering great beer in a college town. If you don’t believe me check out their other locations in Tempe, Lincoln Nebraska and Norman Oklahoma. When owner John Wasson first opened the Tempe location he served whatever craft beer he could find including Bridgeport IPA. Loyal to the brand that helped him get started, Bridgeport beers are still available at the bar. Don’t forget to eat here. This isn’t just bar food, Bison Witches has great October 13th, 2011 - October 19th, 2011

sandwiches and if you are a sucker for your soup in a bread bowl, this is the place to be. Celebrate their anniversary all month with SanTan Brewing as beer of the month. Up Mill a little from Bison Witches and at the end of a court on 4th Street, but with a Mill Avenue address is Tavern on Mill. This mainstay of Mill seems to have been there much longer than seven years but that’s the anniversary they will celebrate on October 18th with the type of party only the can throw. But more about that later, let’s talk about their craft beer credentials. Actually let’s talk about their food first. The menu doesn’t feature any immediate standout, must try items, but that’s because everything looks and sounds (and tastes) so good that nothing jumps out at you. Perhaps you want to try their wings with a variety of sauces including Sriracha Garlic, Cilantro Lime, Joey Style (spicy pepper, honey and barbecue sauce) or even PB&J. Don’t ask me about the last one, that’s what the menu says. How about a 10 oz knife burger? Guaranteed to leave you a mess if you don’t use the namesake utensil. Or try a taco or burrito. Up and about on the weekend? They got breakfast for you with large portions and a fine selection. But we’re not here to talk food (okay maybe a little bit), we are here to talk about beer. When they first opened they carried Sierra Nevada Pale Ale which at the time was considered one of the cutting edge craft beers and was not necessarily a mainstream craft as it is now. But it was what was available. Today they have bloomed into a legitimate craft force with SanTan Brewing, Left Hand Milk Stout (yes on nitrogen), Ballast Point Pale Ale and Green Flash West Coast IPA on tap. The latter two are special to them because the folks that own Tavern on Mill got started in San Diego (if you get to Pacific Beach, Tavern on the Beach is a must) and they are thrilled to be able to offer a couple of classic tastes of home. Ballast Point Brewing and Green Flash are located just a few miles apart and are both a major part of why San Diego is one of the best beer towns in the country. Green Flash’s West Coast IPA defined the style, both figuratively and literally. In addition to great draft beer they have a growing selection of fine bottled and canned craft beer. Being a college bar, you can still find campus favorite Coors Light so the spot is perfect for a group of friends regardless of their tastes. I promised you a party and a party you shall have. If you have ever seen what Tavern on Mill can do with a

BY “KING” JAMES SWANN Hello again everyone, the weather has broken and it’s now time to chat about Winter Beer! Our climate is changing and as I sit in my living room with the doors open at a steady 75 degrees I can’t help but be thankful to Mother Nature for finally relenting. This week lets chinwag over Vanilla Porter from Breckenridge Brewing located in Colorado. Open since 1990, Breckenridge has quickly expanded across Colorado and now has four locations brewing and bottling a combined 30,000 barrels of hand crafted brew each year.Anyone out there up for a Ski (beer) Trip?

BEER! SECTION

A Beer for Holiday Cheer!

Vanilla Porter is a tribute to the classic British style but with a twist, real vanilla beans. Smooth, dark and mellow, this throwback to the 18th century pours almost opaque with a light copper head. Notes of coffee and vanilla tickle the nose and follow through on the palate with a slight bitter quality that nicely balances the mix. At just less than 5% ABV this is most certainly a session brew and one for the ski lift. I wonder, can you still raise a pint on the ski lifts? That was always the best part! Imagine pairing this beer with holiday foods like Fennel Roasted Turkey, Beef Wellington and Liquor filled Chocolates. My mouth simply waters at the prospect. Vanilla Porter and other beers like it take me straight to the holiday season, my favorite time of the year, so grab a six pack and open that front door because it’s beautiful out there. I hear it’s even Snowing in Flagstaff!

As always, send your thoughts and ideas to kingjamesswann@gmail. com, I love to hear them. Until next week, just remember to think chilly thoughts. Cheers. October 13th, 2011 - October 19th, 2011

BUNGEE JUMPING As a Matter of Fact… According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the 233m jump from the Macau Tower is the highest bungee jump in the world. Bungee traditionalists actually claim it’s not a true bungee jump, as the rebounds are controlled by a cable guide system, but the initial 5 second freefall is the longest in the bungee world. As you zip through the air you’ll reach speeds of nearly 220kmh. Booking in advance is required. An extra pair of pants is recommended as well.

SKY DIVING As a Matter of Fact… To show that anyone from any age can sky dive, a 92 year old man sporting artificial knees did a solo jump in Cleveland, Ohio. He weighed a mere 105 pounds, had fake knees, and a hearing aid. He leaped at 3,500 feet. The youngest ever was 4 years old - leaving you with, well, no excuses whatsoever.

RUN WITH THE BULLS As a Matter of Fact… The Chupinaxco takes place at 12 noon, on July 6th, at the Town Hall, in the old city, Pamplona Spain. Mozos, as the adrenaline-hungry adventurers who run with the bulls are called, traditionally wear white pants and shirts, accessorized with a red bandana around the neck or waist. One legend says the look is meant to honor San Fermin, as the white symbolizes sainthood and the red the fact that he was martyred. Others say the mozos are meant to be dressed like the butchers who originated the tradition. Either way, “the bulls are colorblind, so they don’t care.

RIDE KINGDA KA: WORLD’S TALLEST ROLLERCOASTER As a Matter of Fact… This Six Flags Adventure Park behemoth accelerates from zero to more than 200km/h in 3.5 seconds. It then climbs vertically while twisting to the right, reaching nearly 140m into the air before spiralling straight down for 127m. It is the undisputed ‘King of Rollercoasters’ and will represent the scariest 28 seconds of your life. In a good way, of course.

WHITE WATER RAFTING As a Matter of Fact… The thrill or the excitement that a person enjoys in whitewater rafting include treading through rough water,

PAINTBALL As a Matter of Fact… A game of paintball usually involves two opposing teams seeking to eliminate all of the other team’s players or to complete some other objective, such as retrieving a flag, eliminating a specific player, or other paintball variations. Depending on the style of paintball played, a paintball game can last from seconds to days, although typical woodsball games are five to thirty minutes long.

If you want a similar feel to real life combat, this is the sport for you. Just remember, clear is your favorite color.

SNOWBOARDING As a Matter of Fact… The history of snowboarding isn’t as long as the history of skiing. When it comes to snowboarding facts, you might be interested to know that the sport can trace its origins back to the 1920s. This is farther back than you might have anticipated, as the sport has only really taken off in recent decades. In 1929, a Utah man by the name of M.J. Burchett created what many believe to be one of the first snowboards. Burchett cut a plywood plank into a rideable board and used both horse reins and clotheslines to secure his feet. Things are now a bit more advanced, but still hell on

however, objects may be closer than they appear.

SHARK DIVING As a Matter of Fact… Diving with great white sharks in Australia is safe. Of course there are dangers, but the statistics show that participating in a contained, professional cage dive is actually safer than driving a car. Still take note

NICK JONAS AT HARD ROCK CAFE

October 25th 2011

New Jersey pop-rock band, Ocean Grove, just released their EP, Another Place To Stay, to great success during summer 2011. The band is currently preparing to extensively hit the road on two tours. First up, a 10-date, South American tour opening for their good friend and musical collaborator, Nick Jonas. Once the band makes it back to the states they’ll be embarking on a coheadlining tour alongside Voxhaul Broadcast with very special guest Robert Schwartzman , vocalist of Rooney (all tour dates below). For more information, please visit: www. oceangroveband.com Bands come together in various ways, usually by chance meetings, Craigslist ads, or music class- but few can say their lineup was created after sharing the experience of playing in a backing band for one of the biggest bands in the world. After touring the globe and enjoying some of the greatest times of their lives, John Taylor (vocals/guitar), Ryan Liestman (keys/backing vocals), Greg Garbowsky (bass/backing vocals), Jack Lawless (drums) decided it was time to start their own project, one that would see them develop a truly unique rock n’ roll sound - Ocean Grove. Once Ocean Grove finished their tour

commitments, they were ready to record their first EP Little Record. In Spring 2010, they spent time in LA writing with various co-writers, but once recorded, the band knew the EP wasn’t the exact direction they had hoped to take. They packed up and went back to the East coast- to Ocean Grove, New Jersey. There, the band shacked up in a beautiful Victorian home near the ocean to focus on a real and more rock n’ roll sound. After recording 14 songs in two weeks, Ocean Grove finally felt they had come into their own. The EP, Another Place to Stay, mixed by Paul Hager (Van Halen, Goo Goo Dolls, American Hi-Fi) and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Beastie Boys) is an EP filled with feel good songs pulling from their greatest influences such as The Beach Boys, Tom Petty, and Weezer. The inspiration for the EP came from years of experiences and all the little things life throws our way. The band is proud of all their past accomplishments like having played with acts such as Stevie Wonder, Brad Paisely, Vince Gill and performing on over 50 television shows, but Ocean Grove is ready to continue something truly special and all their own, just like their bond as a band. With their new EP, and positive outlook on all that’s to come, they are ready for just about anything. For more information on Ocean Grove, please visit www. oceangroveband.com

Cassie from

Teen witch Cassie (Britt Robertson) is just an ordinary girl in extraordinary circumstances in the new CW series “The Secret Circle,” and her wardrobe reflects the struggle between light and darkness. “Both are inside her,” says costume designer Katia Stano, “so we try to contrast something soft in texture or pattern or in the design with something strong. We give her shoes that are strong like a boot when she is wearing a dress. If she’s got a floral top, she’s got a leather or army jacket on.” Cassie’s look includes a lot of military references that reflect a maturity that comes from the loss of her parents and assuming a leadership role within the circle. She also has a slight gypsyness that the designers imagine might come from being on the run with her mom. “You can see an armful in bracelets and stackable rings that remind her of her mom,” Stano says. “A lot of the dangle earrings we have made for her by Sancha, a local designer in Vancouver.”

ADCC Champion & M-1 Global Light Heavyweight Ace Vinny Magalhaes to Defend Belt October 14th in Phoenix The Valley’s Own Rising Star Daniel “BlackOut” Madrid Eager to Showcase Talent in Front of Hometown Fans Decorated Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner, Vinny ‘Pezao’ Magalhaes (8-5) has been a tear as of late; not only has he culminated his sensational submission career with the recent gold medal at the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championships, he’s also won four MMA fights in a row and has had his arm raised in six out of his last seven outings. His recent run has been nothing short of an unbridled success; Magalhaes exhibited a commanding TKO victory over undefeated Jake Doerr on M-1’s SHOWTIME, throughout a slick mounted Gogoplata submission on Viktor Nemkov to capture Europe’s leading mixed martial arts promotion’ Light Heavyweight strap and cemented himself as one of the planet’s best submission artists. All in all that equates to one incredible year.

Magalhaes’ next trip to the ring comes October 14th as the co-main event on M-1 Global’s third US-based, televised event on SHOWTIME; standing opposite the champion will be Russia’s versatile standout fighter Mikhail Zayats. Fans can capture the joint-jacking warriors in action from the new 5,500 seat Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix, Arizona LIVE on SHOWTIME starting at 11 p.m. ET/PT As a world-class BJJ expert who owns a Black Belt under instructors Vinicius Aieta and Royler Gracie, Magalhaes currently trains and teaches at the Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he’s dedicated to evolving his skills in Wrestling, Muay Thai and Boxing; with a versatile arsenal, Magalhaes has every opportunity to become one of the world’s best light heavyweight fighters and a marquee name for the M-1 Global promotion. Now sitting as the king of M-1 Global’s 205-pound division, Magalhaes is making preparations for the short trip to Phoenix, Arizona where he intends to seize another

unprecedented victory over the extremely competitive Zayats. Expect a war on October 14th. Also fighting on the card is Arizona’s own Daniel “BlackOut” Madrid, a Phoenix native who has been steadily climbing the mixed martial arts ranks. Currently 9-2-0 as a professional, Madrid is certainly a threat to all in his path with a particularly slick ground game and impressive allaround skillset sure to please any crowd. Holding a 2nd stripe brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Israel Juarez, his biggest win to date – an impressive, hardfought victory in 2009 over dangerous veteran Daijiro Matsui in Art Of War FC. The two battled back and forth in an all-out war for 14 minutes before Matsui was eventually choked unconscious via inverted triangle choke, leaving onlookers more than satisfied. Preparing to showcase his talents right here in his own backyard, M1-Global seems to be the perfect platform to capture the world’s attention, working his way towards the primary mission, fighting (and winning) in the UFC. Tickets are priced at $35, $40, $50, $75 and $150 and can be purchased at www. GCUArena.com, charge by phone at 602639-8999 or visit the GCU Arena Box Office located at 3300 W. Camelback Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85017. For information on M-1 Global, go to the official M-1 website, www.M-1Global. com and M-1 Global facebook fan page. The Night Owl BY EVELYN ROMANS

Studio 54 on Skates Night

7000 East Mayo Boulevard Phoenix, 85054 • (480) 419-6375

New York City’s most famous night club has been closed for twenty five years now, but its legendary nights of excessive partying still remains iconic in the contemporary club scene—or at least in my world it does. We can all imagine what it must have been like—the world’s most elite celebrities getting groovy on the dance floor in their sexiest dance club attire. Glitter, bell bottoms, and high wasted short shorts galore! Happy heads nodding and swaying to that disco beat making their feathered hair and well groomed afros dance just as well as their platform’ed feet. What went on in that world renowned club may be long gone but perhaps we can attempt to live in its shadow for just one night…on skates. Yes sireee, skates! Bust out your booty shorts and vintage striped knee socks and borrow your friend’s afro wig for some far-out fun this Saturday. Arizona’s own women’s tackle football team, the Arizona Assassins (interesting, right?!), is holding this event as a fundraiser for their upcoming season. Join them and the valley’s hippest people in a boogiefilled, 70’s inspired night to help support their cause for female empowerment and athletics. A DJ will be spinning to help you get your groove back and contests and games will be here and there. The $25 entrance fee ($45 for couples) covers admission, skate rental, and open bar. My advice: don’t get too funked up on limitless libations then think you’re invincible on the hardwood. Saturday, October 15th. 10 pm – 1 am. Advance Ticket Purchase @ www.arizonaassassins.com . COSTUME REQUIRED. Skateland, 1101 West Ray Road, Chandler, AZ. Ages 21+

Sound Wave at Big Surf Water Park All you house heads have probably known about this wave coming and have prepared to let it take you to the shores of electro enlightenment. For those who aren’t that into house (yet), let me tell you a little

about this huge event. Kaskade, voted America’s best DJ of 2011 in DJ Times Magazine will be headlining this festival and performing alongside dozens of other progressive spin artists including Manufactured Superstars, Z Trip, and Trolley Snatcha. The venue alone should already hold your interest as it takes place in an environment filled with almost naked peoples frustrated then relieved with the jump in temperature after a good four day stretch in the 70s and 80s. Join them in feeling the bass vibrate their bones as wave after wave of water and sound absorb into their systems. Three stages will be set up at the park for every group of DJs including a stage highlighting local talent. There will also be live art exhibits, water slides, and food and drink to carry you through this seven hour party. Don’t feel guilty for partaking in such fun because a portion of the proceeds will go towards Big Brother Big Sister of Central Arizona, an organization to help kiddos reach their full potential. I would suggest spending the extra $21 if you have it for VIP so you get to play in the private, VIP-only waterslide, view the show in an exclusive area, and eat the complementary food. Friday, October 14th. 4 pm – 2 am. www.soundwaveaz.com Tempe. Ages 18+

Sure, you can board a boat or a plane to get around the world, but where’s the challenge? In History’s “Around the World in 80 Ways,” Sundays, Robert “Boston Rob” Mariano and Dennis Anderson, a monster truck expert, use 80 ways to circumnavigate the globe. It seems that after exhausting the usual air, land and water modes of transit, not much would remain. But, Mariano says, “How many animals are there?” They travel by ostrich, elephant, donkey and water buffalo. Both men say the one animal that frightens them is the hippo. They had reason to be afraid. In Botswana, they were on a river in a canoe with an engine that broke. Though Anderson managed to get it going, it was just as a hippo charged. “The Big Apple” Native New Yorker is a good little spot when you want some wings and sports. Happy hour is during the week from 3pm-7pm and the deals are great. They have .39 cent wings on Tuesdays and Thursdays and I get suicide and asiago parmesan. Besides that, they also have $4 appetizers, $2.50 domestic pints and $3 three olive drinks. I got a half dozen wings, two margaritas, and garlic cheese bread for $15. There are TVs everywhere with all your games playing! The atmosphere is nothing great but it’s packed when you go! 1301 East Broadway Rd. Tempe, AZ 85282 “Let’s take a little STAYcation” Since football Sundays are back it’s always nice to have a place to go. At Barney’s Boathouse (THE NEW LOCATION IN OLDTOWN) they have 43 flat screens for your favorite teams and 2 for 1 Mimosas ($5). I had this amazing dessert that is three huge soft chocolate chip cookies and vanilla ice cream on top. This place is three stories with two bars outside and one inside with a restaurant vibe on the 2nd floor. I get a Cali vibe when I’m here and that is exactly what I like. 7341 East 6th Avenue Scottsdale, AZ 85251
