Music awards shows can blend together, given that there are so many. What separates the 2011 American Music Awards, airing Sunday, Nov. 20, on ABC, from the others is that they were created for TV, and fans choose the winners. Dick Clark has always been the force behind the AMAs, which rely on what people want to listen to rather than having the industry set the agenda. For the fifth year, fans have voted online, and they gave the most nominations, in four categories, to Adele. The 39th annual show, airing from Nokia Theatre L.A. Live, features Nicki Minaj opening and Katy Perry closing. Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Lopez and Kelly Clarkson are among the other performers scheduled. The only caveat is that it’s a live show, and the roster had changed in the weeks leading up to it. Unlike so many awards shows, this one has no host. It’s kept moving “by the energy of the music and the energy in the room,” says producer Larry Klein, who brings the artists together and figures out pairings, such as the Sarah McLachlan and Pink duet of “Angel” at the 2008 awards. Among this year’s duets to look for is Pitbull and Marc Anthony singing “Rain Over Me.” When he considers the AMAs, Pitbull, a nominee for favorite male artist in the pop/rock and Latin music categories, says what he’s most excited about is “to be around such walking empires and song brands. “What I love at the awards show is to just sit there and observe and study everybody,” he says. “You can tell who has longevity in the business as to how they handle their team.” Adam Levine of Maroon 5 is also excited about whom he may meet at the awards. “It happens all so randomly, and everyone under the sun will be there,” Levine says. If he had the chance to meet anyone, “Paul McCartney would blow my mind,” he says. Maroon 5 will sing “Moves Like Jagger” with Christina Aguilera. “It is hard singing on a stage with her because she is so good,” Levine says. “I will have to flail my arms around and run around like a maniac.” Levine has played in front of 1 million people, and one of his first concerts was at producer Clive Davis’ in front of Jay-Z, Missy Elliott and Smokey Robinson, so he doesn’t give in to jitters. Justin Bieber, up for favorite male artist in the pop/rock category, also doesn’t get stage fright. “I just feel like I have been doing this for 37 years, so I don’t get nervous,” says Bieber, who’s singing “Mistletoe.”

Granted, I will probably never listen to a Fishbone tune outside of this motion picture but I can certainly bow down to the band after having been enlightened to their spirited significance – something that would most definitely have not been the case had writer/directors Chris Metzler and Lev Anderson simply sung its praises, as is the case with so many similar projects.” Grade: B

Every time I work on a new set, I take whatever I can from it and learn as much as I can around the people I’m working with. Brooke Shields has been a child star and has grown into an incredible actress. She is very accomplished and I look up to her. She had a mother’s sense to her – and was very sweet and protective.”– Sammi Hanratty

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf movies recently released to Blu-ray and DVD.

By Joseph J. Airdo

For me it’s about being really present in a scene, and really truthful, especially with this script it was so beautifully and truthfully written that there really wasn’t a lot of acting to be done, it was more of just being yourself and really listening to what the other actors in a scene were saying and it would naturally evoke a reaction because the words written were so truthful. My approach to acting is that it’s all about being one hundred percent open within the rules and restrictions of a certain or particular character. And as the scenes changed from sequence to sequence, I found myself immersed in the totality of it, with an honest reaction to the theme of the story as the events unfolded and revelations became apparent.” – Shailene Woodley

“I was born in Scottsdale and then [my family] moved out to California. We moved back to Arizona when I was about 7 years old. We’ve been back and forth. We had an apartment in California and a house in Arizona. I kind of got the best of both worlds where I got to go back home to the more laid-back desert of Arizona, but I was also out in California working. 2 years ago however, we moved out to California full time. I read the script (for ‘The Greening of Whitney Brown’) and absolutely loved it. I thought it was really great because it has a really good message and it is also a lot of fun. I thought it was a sweet family film that people could take a lot from. That made me really want to do it. Every teenager and all ages from 10 to 18 have to go through the process of finding out who they are. It is very difficult – especially with the situation that Whitney is put in having to move. Everybody has to kind of deal with that in their own way. I definitely

made me tougher and more resilient to all of the [stuff] you have got to go through to get a film made. But, to be honest, we have no control over what’s going on with a movie, much less what people are going to think of it. Your whole life is wound up in it but you don’t have control and you have to get used to being on that turbulent plane without trying to fly it. The less you think about all that the better.” – Mike Mills

Writer/Director/ Actor Evan Glodell (‘Bellflower’) By Joseph J. Airdo “I have thought about [a global apocalypse] more than some. Certainly, if the car (featured in ‘Bellflower’) does what it was intended to do – which was intimidate people – and I rolled up in it, I feel like people would follow me. I would appear to be the most prepared. I learned a lot of lessons about not waiting for things to happen and also about not giving up. When you get to the 2-year point in the project, it is difficult for your mind to comprehend that there is still an end in sight. You really have to go into it saying that you are going to finish it and not give up. I am glad that I made it through.” – Evan Glodell

Actress Martha MacIsaac (‘Hoax for the Holidays’) Writer/Director Mike Mills (‘Beginners’) By Joseph J. Airdo “I knew how important [‘Beginners’] was all of the way through and that was actually really helpful. I knew that this was the most important thing that will ever happen in my career. And it didn’t psyche me out. It

By Joseph J. Airdo “I loved [‘Hoax for the Holidays’] as soon as I read the script. It was such a well-rounded, well-written character that (screenwriter) Josh McDonald had created. It was all there on the page and that is not normally the case for younger female roles. (Plus,) I love the holidays. I absolutely adore them. I am so excited that I get to go home for two whole weeks this year

Casino Del Sol Resort Opens with a Bang Travelers already flock to Arizona for the beautiful weather and mountain views. Casino Del Sol Resort, Spa and Conference Center provides those looking to escape and unwind a complete entertainment destination that is unmatched by anything else in the Southwest. Casino Del Sol Resort in Tucson, Ariz. officially opened its doors on the luckiest day on earth: 11-11-11. The new resort hosted more than 45,000 people during opening weekend and included a tribute to the nation’s veterans, two sold-out concerts and the largest fireworks show in southern Arizona. This opening is a part of a growing hospitality trend in entertainment resort destinations. “Long gone are the days that resorts can rely on just a pool and restaurant to attract travelers—they are now expected to be a one-stop entertainment destination for their guests, and that is exactly what Casino Del Sol Resort has set out to be,” said Wendell Long, CEO of the resort. Nothing short of entertaining, the 215-room resort boasts the Anselmo Valencia Tori Amphitheater (AVA), a 5,000-seat open-air concert venue that has featured world-class artists including Santana, Rhianna, Snoop Dog, Train; and on opening weekend, country music legend Tim McGraw and Latin music superstars Pepe November 17th, 2011 - November 23rd, 2011

Aguilar and Alejandra Guzman played to sold out crowds. As the newest, most exciting resort destination to hit southern Arizona, the Certified Green Casino Del Sol promises decadence. An opulent retreat in the desert, the Tuscaninspired resort beckons guests with illuminated copper domes, grand archways and columns, bubbling fountains, and flourishing greens and flowers. Upon entering the grand entry, guests are greeted by creamy Italian marble, rich mahogany woods, plush furniture and fresh floral bouquets. A 10-foot crystal chandelier that features rustic, wrought iron details adorns the vaulted ceiling. The resort features a master-planned pool and lawn complete with VIP cabanas offering shade and exclusivity, while several fire pits throughout the area offers vignettes for romantic conversations under the stars. Fountains and light shows synchronized to music entertain guests throughout the night and day. The exclusive and intimate Hiapsi Spa & Fitness center offers everything from vigorous cardio workouts to special Pascua Yaqui herbal wraps to manicures and pedicures. But the center transcends beyond the treatments offered. Hiapsi is the Pascua Yaqui word for “heart and soul,” and it is believed that true healing comes with balancing physical health, emotional well-being, and spiritual renewal.

Future plans to round out the amazing resort amenities include an 18-hole golf course designed by the only full-blooded Native American player on the PGA tour and four time

tournament winner, Notah Begay III. The new course, scheduled to begin construction this winter, will feature a Jack Nicklaus Academy of Golf, which would be the first such school in Arizona, and only the fifth one in the nation. Casino Del Sol is Southern Arizona’s premier place to play and win and the Club Sol rewards program is one of the most generous in the industry. The casino offers players 1,300 state-of-the-art slot and video poker machines, 22 tables for Blackjack and Poker and a 600-player bingo hall. Proudly owned and operated by the Pascua Yaqui Tribe in Tucson. Casino Del Sol and its sister casino, Casino of the Sun, have been in operation for the past 20 years.

I’m Mazatzal – and I’m not taking it anymore! It’s one of the most interesting stories I’ve heard about. It fills me with great pride. And it proves that you can find value in almost anything if you put your mind to it. This saga starts a couple of years ago. After completing my second book, Conrad on Casino Marketing, I wanted the whole gaming world to read it. OK, truth be told, I was hoping to sell a few thousand copies of the book as well. So I did what I imagine most consultants/authors do, I gave away a few hundred copies of Conrad on Casino Marketing to friends and relatives - To influential gaming industry professionals and for the purposes of this story, to a random group of casino general managers in the Western United States. Enter Farrell Hoosava of Mazatzal (pronounced almost identical to “Mad as Hell”) Casino in Payson, Arizona. Unbeknownst to me, Farrell read my book, liked it and immediately thought that the concepts I espoused in Conrad on Casino Marketing would make a good basis for a training program for Mazatzal Casino. Unbeknownst to me, Farrell read

my book, liked it and immediately thought that the concepts I espoused in Conrad on Casino Marketing would make a good basis for a training program for Mazatzal Casino. Fast forward two years. Through Farrell’s leadership and the hard work of Patricia Wisner, Mazatzal’s Training and Development Specialist, they now have a fully formed “Master Plan for Fun,” designed to improve customer service and positively affect the Mazatzal culture. “Master Plan for Fun” is now into its second go around at Mazatzal. It has a concise project definition with clear objectives and a curriculum containing 8 work-shops, a variety of “hold feet to the fire” assignments, Directors’ Retreats designed to chart progress, discuss program innovations, maintain accountability, and a Celebration Luncheon - But above all, “Master Plan for Fun” has had results. Or as GM Farrell Hoosava told me in a recent email, “When you sent me your book a couple of years ago, I knew that a course built around the insights in your book had the potential to change the culture here. I am sending you the entire curriculum, which we have adapted to our supervisors. It was very gratifying to hear from one of them after the first workshop that she had noticed a change in the culture following the first run through with the

managers.” Thank you, Farrell, thank you, Patty, and thanks to your entire team. I’m proud as hell that Mazatzal took my book, took my thoughts, and took the real initiative to make a difference for your managers, your team members and your guests. And to everyone else, when you read a thought provoking book, or attend an interesting conference, or simply have a great idea that can matter, just “take it and run with it.” That’s a master plan for success that would do all consultants/authors proud. BEER!

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

THE BEER SNOB Much has been made over the past few years about the “wineification” of beer, including the now common statement, “Beer is the new wine.” Perhaps this is true. Beer, at least of the craft variety, has certainly become more popular. It is being paired with food more than ever, and even starting to show up in white tablecloth restaurants. There are even full-fledged beer geeks to go along with it. Sadly, some of the snobbery that wine has long been famous for has also pervaded the craft beer world. In a recent discourse on a

Handcrafted in Juneau, Alaska

November 17th, 2011 - November 23rd, 2011

Facebook page supposedly dedicated to lovers of craft beer that statement was made that, “I don’t need to tell anyone that (insert macro lager here) is disgusting…” The writer goes on to talk about how a certain beer rating web site gives it a “D” and then goes on to say that the fact that it won an award at a recent judged event is “mind bottling” further showing how cool he is by using a variation on the phrase “mind boggling.” I think we can agree that this individual is clearly showing snobbish behavior. Of course, his response to anybody taking issue with this statement was to attack them to show that he had

alaskanbeer.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

a superior grasp of the situation. What causes this type of behavior, what makes a person who should be an enthusiast, a supporter for great beer, turn in to a complete snob who prefers to bash other beers, and by extension their drinkers, in the name of promoting his interests? There are a variety of reasons of course. The two biggest influencers are probably insecurity and a lack of general knowledge about beer. Because he doesn’t understand or know enough to make a cogent argument in favor of craft beer, he attacks the competition, first Continued on Page 31...

putting down the other product and then attacking anybody who dares to point out he might be mistaken. The insecurity part is clear…he knows that he doesn’t know as much as others and takes bold stands hoping to discourage any further conversation. The wine world has learned that snobbery is not conducive to growing the brand, or in this case, the category. More and more the wine snobs have distanced themselves from snobbish attitude and, aside from occasional derogatory comments about people who put ice in their red wine, keep themselves pretty much on the geek side. It became a learned response to years of being put down for the way they treated what they considered inferior products and other drinkers. They learned that every wine has its place in the grand scheme of life and each and every drinker ultimately adds to the overall growth of wine as a business. Without that growth, the availability of rare or unusual wines may dry up, leaving the connoisseur with less choices. So it may go with beer. Right now we are enjoying a bull market in beer. Brewers are making more and more great beers, and many of these are special releases. The market in limited release beer is so good right now, that people like the person in the second paragraph are putting down bars that open with multiple craft beer handles (like 40 or so craft handles) because their offerings aren’t exciting enough. These are people that don’t get it and probably never will. The craft beer world needs

all types, they need the light beer drinker, they need the bars that support entry level craft beer, they need to be supportive of people who drink beers they consider lesser in quality to what they drink. And they need to do it all without being condescending or arrogant about it. The great beer served at a variety of outstanding bars in Arizona is dependent on all of the above. Every bar cannot, nor should it, open with 30 rotating tap handles specializing only in one-off beers that come to Arizona in such small quantities they are fully allocated before even getting on a truck for the ride from the brewery to here.

No brewery (or winery) can survive exclusively with the snobs. Perhaps one or two brands within the family are great for the snobs, but if all they do is sell their limited release beer, then they won’t be in

business very long. It is the flagship beers that make a brewery successful. Because people drink a lot of Dale’s Pale Ale, Oskar Blues can produce Ten FIDY every year; because people drink plenty of Bell’s Amber, we get the gift of Hopslam every January; and because Great Divide sells plenty of Denver Pale Ale and Titan, they are able to make Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout…in fact they can make a whole lineup of Yeti beers. yourself if you are truly advocating what you drink, or are you putting somebody else down for their choice of what you perceive to be bad beer. The secret to the continued growth of craft beer is doing our best to eliminate the snobbery and put the focus on the positive. Being a beer geek is great for the industry, being a beer snob hurts it.

A SNOW DAY FOR ALL!

Hello again Beer Lovers, thanks for all the feedback on last week’s Fresh Hop Beer article. Who knew there were so many? To all those who wrote in, I do apologize for leaving Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale out of the mix. I received 11 emails noting my mistake in omitting this little gem. WOW! Now on to today’s Beer of choice, a write in suggestion from Andrew W….Snow Day Winter Ale from New Belgium Brewing. Located in Fort Collins Colorado, New Belgium drew inspiration for Snow Day from a massive 37 inch, two day snow storm that occurred there back in 2003. The name Snow Day evoked that feeling of freedom in looking out the window and realizing there would be no school and sledding down your favorite slush covered hill was the order of the day. A day for play, I say a day for beer! Pleasantly hoppy, Snow Day carries subtle chocolate and caramel flavors of a new-ish roasted brewing malt known as Midnight Wheat. Austrian (Fuggle) Golding, Centennial and Cascade hops bring the backbone of hoppy bitterness to complement the toasty undertones. It pours the deep garnet of roasted walnut and presents a creamy, thick off white head. A true winter warmer registering a stout 6.2% ABV and 55 IBUs, this nicely balanced seasonal brew made its debut this year, taking the place of their previous offering known as 2Below. I liked 2Below, but I must say that Snow Day is most definitely progress. The bold hop character truly enhances the roasted malt characteristics and makes for a complex yet easy dinking brew.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeverages.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Great food pairings should include sharp goat cheeses, winter fruit compotes with dark toasty crackers and holiday salads. Wow I am making myself hungry! Snow Day would also pair quite nicely with a brandy snifter of nice 14 year old Speyside Region Single Malt Scotch. As always, keep sending questions and comments to kingjamesswann@gmail.com . Until next week, stay safe, warm and full of Holiday Cheer!

Mighty Military Movies to get your War Face On!!

TEN CLASSIC WAR FILMS A Veterans Day Salute…

world, the right choice of words and unique turn of phrase can be shocking – even deadly.

BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY (1989)

Tom Cruise is in rare form, portraying real-life Vietnam vet Ron Kovic, who returned home to Long Island paralyzed from the chest down yet mentally sharp and ready to rage a war of his own. Only three years after Top Gun, Born On The Fourth Of July is a wonderful film and a truly memorable performance from Cruise.

THE DIRTY DOZEN (1967)

One of the most beloved “dad movies” of all time, Father may very well know best. The feisty, murderous “dozen,” summoned for a suicide mission on the eve of D-Day, get the job done… and then some.

APOCALYPSE NOW (1979)

PLATOON (1986) INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS (2009)

Violent, in your face and endlessly entertaining, Director Quentin Tarantino makes this unforgettable WWII film his own. Rest assured there’s plenty of bloodshed, but this gloriously demented piece of pulp fiction is more about the incredible power of words, both good and bad. In Quentin’s

Oliver Stone’s impassioned and corrective portrayal of the Vietnam War is certainly one for the ages. Released right when America seemed finally ready to reexamine its involvement in Vietnam, Stone’s down and dirty drama, marked by complex motivations among the troops, made a tremendous impact both in the U.S. and around the world.

SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (1998)

A rare gem of a film, Steven Spielberg’s WWII drama brings us an intimate story to the sweep of history. The movie’s epic mounting of the 1944 Omaha Beach landing is simply second to none. Gore and mud galore (27 grueling minutes worth), the sequence has no equal on any list, anywhere, period.

PATHS OF GLORY (1957)

Another Kubrick film to stand and applaud, what elevates Paths of Glory to the top of the charts isn’t its brutal scenes of WWI trench warfare – but the tremendous level of honor and pride that comes with battle. Kirk Douglas’s lawyer-colonel is tasked with mounting a courtroom defense of three innocent soldiers who just happened to be on the losing end of things. Based on the true story of French soldiers executed for “cowardice,” Kubrick’s movie so angered France’s government that it couldn’t be screened publicly there until 1975. The film’s lesson however is a good one: If warfare turns us into monsters, even off the battlefield, we simply have no purpose to wage war.

FULL METAL JACKET (1987)

PATTON (1970)

Stanley Kubrick’s unmistakable contributions to Vietnam war movies will punch you square in the face – right between the eyes – and as hard as humanly possible. The first half of this film, set at the Marines’ Parris Island training facility, is well known and widely applauded as Drill InstrucAZWeeklyMagazine.com

Francis Ford Coppola’s surreal war movie Apocalypse Now has been well-documented around the world - and for good reason. This film is a genuinely disturbing yet delightfully insightful, nightmarish heart attack of epic proportions, to be enjoyed to the fullest. With its hypnotizing imagery, whirling helicopter blades, unnerving explosions and plenty of purple haze, film connoisseurs and devoted Coppola fans see this war movie as nothing short of an all-out masterpiece.

THE HURT LOCKER (2008)

Director Kathryn Bigelow’s Oscar winner relies less on happy endings as an acute portrayal of the daily pressures of Iraq-based bomb defusers. If you’re a fan of ‘nail-biting tension’ then you’re in for a real treat. Remember the name Bigelow, as her next film, Kill Bin Laden, is rumored to be in works.

November 17th, 2011 - November 23rd, 2011

tor R. Lee Ermey unleashes every imaginable expletive known to man while putting a group of new recruits through a new brand of hell. All a necessary part of the process of course, turning boys into men - and men into killing machines.

Known as one of President Richard Nixon’s favorite films, Patton is an ideal counterbalance to the voices of protesters and rallies of righteousness. George C. Scott is brilliant in the title role, railing iconically against “Hun bastards” in his opening monologue before a huge American flag.

Back by Popular Demand, Santa Returns to Scottsdale Gun Club to Pose in Holiday Photos with stunning $80,000 Garwood Minigun in the Background For the second year in a row, the Scottsdale Gun Club is hosting Holiday photos with Santa. On Saturday, November 26th and again on Saturday, December 10th from 10 a.m. till 3 p.m. families and gun enthusiasts from around the Valley will have a one-of-a-kind opportunity to be photographed next to Santa while against a backdrop of a stunning $80,000 Garwood mini-gun and SGC’s coolest belt fed machine guns including the M60, M249 and M240. Guests will also have the choice to pose with other firearms ranging from pistols to modified AR15s. The Scottsdale Gun Club first introduced the “Santa and Machine Guns” Holiday photo concept in 2010, primarily for the Club’s members. But as news spread about this unique opportunity, more than 200 people

lined up at the Club for a chance to pose with Santa for their portraits. “Our members and guests enjoyed the concept and we are delighted to bring it back again this Holiday season,” said Ron Kennedy, SGC’s GM. This rare photo opportunity quickly became the talk of the town and garnered attention in local media and national media including a mention on Jay Leno. As a result, the Club has received dozens of requests to bring Santa back again for the Holidays. Guests do not have to be Members of the Club to participate. For a onetime $10.00 fee, guests receive both digital and print versions of their photo. Cactus Moon Celebrates Thanksgiving Day Pre-Bash!

Wednesday, November 23rd Fans of Cactus Moon already know that the huge restaurant and nightclub will be doing something special almost any night of the week. But, the day before Thanksgiving is renowned as a night to go out, even for those who might not normally do so, and as one might expect, Cactus Moon will be jumpin’ with excitement. There really can be no better place to drink with .50 calls, well drinks and $2 domestic drafts from 9pm to 11pm. Yes… 50 cent calls (within reason of course) so make sure you get there early to take advantage of that. If you miss the prime-time drinking specials, you still can have $3 SKYY drinks all night long.

Gentle Giant Don Williams with Lacey Brown November 17th at Celebrity Theatre

It’s going to be an evening to remember, as Celebrity Theatre proudly presents Country Music Hall of Famer Don Williams with special guest, American Idol’s Lacey Brown at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, November 17th. Don Williams has always been a man apart. No outlaw rhetoric, no Nashville schmooze, no rock ‘n’ roll with a twang, no gimmicks. Just simple honest songs honestly sung. With his laid-back, straightforward vocals and large, imposing build, Williams came to be known as “the Gentle Giant” of country. That nickname was bestowed on him in the early ‘70s, when he began a string of countrypolitan hits that ran into the early ‘90s. Since her debut as an American Idol Top 12 finalist in 2010, Lacey Brown has made numerous appearances on Late Night With David Letterman,

The Night Owl BY EVELYN ROMANS

Avant-Garden: Have you Heard? at the Desert Botanical Garden Staring at spreadsheets all day and writing reports all week can act like a poison to your soul if your heart’s not into it. After doing the same repetitive gestures over and over again at your desk and having comparable, trivial conversation on the daily with your neighboring coworker does not spark an inspiring idea in your brain. Instead, it kills the kind of joy you share with friends on weekends and starts erasing those dreams of having the type of job that changes the world while at the same time, makes you wonderfully wealthy. So, every workweek you continue trudging into the office every morning and when you get home at night, you pop open a beer and watch TV or play on the internetz, forgetting about the need to exercise your brain with intellectual input. This Thursday, perhaps consider playing word games with your brain by allowing yourself to listen to a type of poetry you may have never had the chance of encountering. Every Thursday, HB and HomeBase poetry will help reactivate those abandoned brain cells with spoken word performances, most likely instilling more ideas in creative word formations than the updates on your facebook newsfeed. Also spend the evening walking through the garden in close to perfect autumn weather as you sip on a cocktail or one of the $5 glasses of house wine on special that evening. All that verbal stimulation may make you hungry so green chile enchilada plates will be available for purchase. Thursday, November 17th. 6 – 8:30 pm. $18. Cash Bar. Ages: 21 +

Phoenix DMZ at Carly’s Bistro Carly’s centralized location in Phoenix makes it a watering hole for hipsters looking for tasty libations with a cool soundtrack while it remains a mecca for foodies who crave flavorful sandwiches. I went there with a date one First Friday and the place was in a state of chaos—so many people were waiting outside for tables and the music playing was barely audible over the excited voices of scores of people. I did enjoy the artwork on the walls and people watching, though. Thank goodness First Friday isn’t every Friday otherwise this place would get run down and in my opinion, lose its value as a great place to chill and

have drinks. Every Thursday, DJs, Michael Hayden and Matty Corbisiero come in and play downtempo, dubstep, and old school hip-hop for your Thirsty Thursday enjoyment. If you’re like me and like to actually hear the music the DJs play, I would suggest coming on a Thursday to avoid weekend amateur nights. Thursdays. 10 pm – 2 am. www.phoenixdmz. com

Robbie Fox’s The Ring of Honor game is Saturday night and for all Sun Devils and Wildcats, it’s a huge deal. Seeing as the Wildcats suck hard this season, I think it’s safe to assume my Alma Mater will be victorious and all my fellow Devils will run rampant on Mill after the game, fingers sore from pitch forking in Wildcat faces. I am sure anywhere on Mill that night will be a fun, memorable experience but the one I would recommend most would be Robbie Fox’s. Their giant outdoor patio makes for a great dance floor and the weather will be cool enough to really boogie down without worrying about sweating and getting a whiff of someone’s stank B.O.. Multiple bars and choices to linger and stand around at are aplenty and I can almost guarantee the energy from rowdy college students will be enough even for the older alumni to absorb. Go Devils! 640 S. Mill Ave (6th and Mill). Ages 21+

“Sports bars….we all love them” Zipps is a popular neighborhood type of sports bar and I love going. Their onion rings are so good and I like the nachos a lot there as well. This is their newest location and it is one of my favorites. The outside patio is great for some day drinking with their fire pit and heaters for this weather that has just recently arrived. Their happy hour is Monday-Friday from 3-7pm, but their specials are different every day! I went on a Thursday so my options were $4 32oz domestics (which I got!), $3 premiums, $3 sweet tea and lemonade and some wing specials. A great place to watch your sports, people are very enthusiastic about their teams, so be prepared to go to a place that gets rowdy. 1515 East Bethany Home Rd. Phoenix, Arizona 85014

Need a good burger spot? Burgers & Bottles will satisfy your craving and leave you wanting more! Here, you really are paying for the food instead of your atmosphere, but I promise, you will return. The happy hour occurs 4pm-6pm with $1 off drafts, $2.25 16oz PBR, and half off baskets. The baskets are: onion rings, fries, sweet potato fries, fried pickles, and bottle caps, which are sliced and fried jalapenos. I almost never go here without ordering some bottle caps, and the Santa Fe burger is number one on my list. Want my personal recommendation? Try the San Tan Hefeweizen with your food for $3.75 during happy hour. Kids eat free on the weekends if you are looking to get out of the house as well. It is extremely casual here, but great if you want to stop by for dinner or grab a beer at the bar. 1645 N. Hayden Rd. Scottsdale, Arizona 85257
