premieres Wednesday on Fox. Some people were horrified when they heard the title of Fox’s latest sitcom, “I Hate My Teenage Daughter.” Apparently, these people have not spent enough time around heinous teenage girls. Surely there are teenage girls who always tell the truth, cheerfully do their chores, maintain an A average and live to please their equally perfect elders. They also wear skirts below their knees, adhere to a vow of chastity and sobriety, and would never dream of shoplifting, breaking curfew or sexting. Then there’s reality. The comedy, premiering Wednesday, Nov. 30, focuses on that extra-special relationship mothers and teenage daughters enjoy. Naturally the show is over the top; the moms tend toward pathetic while the girls are so nasty, no one would call social services if someone slapped them. The show isn’t helped by a relentless laugh track, but the cast is so solid and the topic so rich that there is a lot of potential. Jaime Pressly (“My Name Is Earl”) and Katie

Finneran (“Wonderfalls”) play Annie and Nikki, best friends whose freshman daughters are spoiled brats. The women are in sync in person. Pressly rocks a barely-there mini and has a 4-year-old son. Finneran, who won a Tony for the revival of “Promises, Promises,” has a baby son, so neither has dealt personally with the challenges of a teenage daughter. “TV is supposed to take you out of your reality and (make you) feel good and laugh at yourself, of what you are going through, and even if you can’t watch, it’s funny,” Pressly says. “Ultimately it is about how much we love the two daughters,” Finneran says. “And it’s really, really about the friendship between the mothers,” Pressly adds. The characters had painful childhoods and awkward teenage years. “My mom was a religious nutbag who insisted on making all of my clothes because she thought the Gap was the devil’s workshop, so I went to school every day looking like a sister wife,” Annie says.

trademark wit and, as such, provides plenty of laughs. However, unlike Aardman’s previous efforts such as ‘Chicken Run,’ ‘Wallace & Gromit’ and ‘Flushed Away,’’Arthur Christmas’ is utterly unoriginal, possessing as many stolen ideas as the Grinch possesses stolen Who belongings. Moreover, the movie blatantly disregards tradition, exhibiting very little of the heart for which the holidays are known best in favor of merry modernday mayhem.” Grade: C

‘The Descendants’

DVD Watch! By Stan Robinson From Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment for the holidays are three movies for the whole family! ‘Prep & Landing’ is an adorable holiday story about a high tech team of elves who ensure that homes around the world are ready for their visit from Santa! The traditional story of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ continues with two new adventures: ‘Beauty and the Beast: Belle’s Magical World Special Edition’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas Special Edition’ debuts on Blu-ray, DVD Combo Pack, and movie download.

‘Arthur Christmas’ Santa’s (Jim Broadbent) youngest son (James McAvoy) undertakes an urgent Christmas mission. Also featuring the voice talents of Hugh Laurie, Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton. (PG – 100 minutes) Stan: “A delightful spin on the familiar theme of ‘How does Santa deliver all those gifts worldwide in one night’, the latest from Aardman Animations, weaves those aspects of familiarity of the traditional holiday into a modern high-tech presentation that the kids of today can certainly relate to. ‘Arthur Christmas’ characters present a couple of generations as they cope with the holiday, just as we do on a generation basis in our modern world of today.” Grade: B Joseph: “‘Arthur Christmas,’ the latest feature-length film from Aardman Animations, certainly has the studio’s

‘Chalet Girl’ While working a job at an exclusive ski resort, a young woman (Felicity Jones) learns to snowboard and is so good at it that she enters a competition with a huge cash prize. Playing exclusively at The Royale. (NR – 96 minutes) Joseph: “Fresh off of a serious role in this fall’s romantic drama ‘Like Crazy,’Felicity Jones tries her hand at something a bit lighter in the romantic comedy ‘Chalet Girl.’ And while there is no denying that the former film is far more significant than the latter, it is nice to see that the actress is capable of not only the emotional intensity that comes with playing a complex character but also

A man (George Clooney) simultaneously struggles with the decision to pull the plug on his comatose wife while facing pressure from relatives to sell 25,000 acres of unspoiled Hawaiian land. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 115 minutes) Stan: “Director Alexander Payne weaves a delicate web as key elements of family, reconnecting, and ultimately forgiveness, provides insightful characters as each are forced to face the humanness and frailties that so easily shift based on emotional states of mind at anytime as the circumstantial catalysts change. A key element, we as viewers examine and reaffirm our own perceptions as the central characters discover theirs.” Grade: B Joseph: “In spite of the soothing sound of Hawaiian serenades threatening to send most moviegoers into a slumber, filmmaker Alexander

‘My Week with Marilyn’ A production assistant (Eddie Redmayne) introduces Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Williams) to the pleasures of British life during the filming of “The Prince and the Showgirl.” Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 101 minutes)

‘Hugo’* An orphan (Asa Butterfield) seeks the answer to a mystery involving his late father (Jude Law), a toyshop owner (Ben Kingsley) and a lock. (PG – 121 minutes) *Screened after deadline. ‘The Muppets’* Kermit, Miss Piggy and the other Muppets join forces with their fans to raise $10 million to save Muppet Theater from a greedy oilman (Chris Cooper) who wants to raze the building and drill for oil. (PG – 98 minutes) *Screened after deadline.

Stan: “Although the ensemble cast give very credible performances, the overall feel and finer nuances that director Simon Curtis presents, is a ‘You are there’ edginess that transcends the period time setting of England just after the war as cinema strives to again maintain its relevance and delivers insightful caricatures of Marilyn Monroe(Michelle Williams) and Sir Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh), and a reminder for this reviewer by the character of Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne) of my first job on a movie set as a production assistant so many years ago.” Grade: B+ Joseph: “Anchored by a impeccable performance by Michelle Williams, director Simon Curtis’s drama ‘My Week with Marilyn’ is as enchanting as it is fascinating. This is especially true of the scenes that take place on the set of Marilyn Monroe’s movie ‘The Prince and the Showgirl.’ Hav-

‘We Were Here’ Filmmakers David Weissman and Bill Weber chronicle the effect of AIDS on San Francisco’s gay community and show how five survivors reacted to the devastation wrought by the epidemic. Playing exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. (NR – 90 minutes) Randy: “A strong contender for ‘Best Documentary,’ ‘We Were Here’ is an emotional look at the early days of the AIDS crisis. The story is passionately told through those that lived through the free, then uncertain times. The disease touched the lives of everyone in the film we meet and each of their stories is just as moving.” Grade: A Stan: “A compelling look back by survivors, at that time in the 60’s, when San Francisco became the safe haven for the gay community and the effects of AIDS as it takes a foothold UltraStar Surprise Pointe Cinemas 13649 North Litchfield Road in Surprise Movie Line: 623-584-3838

Payne’s latest dramedy ‘The Descendants’ is a poignant portrayal of the pain that is possible even in paradise. That is to say that the new motion picture, while easing our emotions with a few light laughs, tackles the topics of death and forgiveness in an exceptionally honest way. Unfortunately, a real estate subplot that Payne probably hoped would help his story speak to people on a spiritual level instead inhibits the movie’s intimacy thereby reducing its resonance, if only slightly.” Grade: B

One of the basic ideologies this reviewer became aware of while in film school is that in the motion picture industry there are numerous aspects of technological advancement that quickly finds its niche with time and usage. When color first came to movies, a common comment of it didn’t look realistic enough soon faded away as it was refined, and is now the norm. Scorsese said 3D is “exciting but it demands respect. We all grew to have such tremendous sympathy for Marilyn while making this film.

I just had a passion for the account of the ‘dream first job’ of a young man [Colin Clark] who wanted to work in films; he got the chance to befriend the great Marilyn Monroe at the peak of her career. It’s funny and a love letter to cinema in a way. We were filming late in the year in England last year and so getting the healthy and summer weather, let a lone a skinny dipping sequence, where it would be warm enough for the actors was a very tall order. I’m the sort of director who’s a fan of actors and very happy to take on other peoples ideas. You’re a fool as a

Holiday Food Drive at Zuva Gallery

Benefitting the Foothills Food Bank

This holiday season, Zuva Gallery at el Pedregal has partnered with the Foothills Food Bank in Cave Creek (www.foothillsfoodbank. com) to host a Holiday Food Drive. The drive will be hosted throughout the remainder of November through Sunday, December 17th. The gallery will have donation boxes in Zuva Gallery (upper level of el Pedregal) and in Zuva Gallery’s Out of Africa shop (lower level, next to the Bakery Café), collecting nonperishable food donations at both locations.

a whole Maine lobster, stuffed with a special shrimp and buttery panko-crumb staffing, served with a choice of a cup of either New England or Manhattan Clam Chowder, two sides, fresh sourdough bread and a Bluewater Grill bib. Bluewater Grill is located at 1720 East Camelback Road in Phoenix. For more information or to make reservations, call (602) 277-FISH (3474). Any guest who stops by with a donation will receive 10% off any purchase they make that day. The Food Bank is in need of canned goods, dried pasta, beans and rice, staples like sugar and flour, as well as Thanksgiving items to go with turkey. According to Pam DiPietro, Executive Director of the Food Bank, “There has been an increase in need and their food shelves keep going bare, so any donations will be greatly appreciated.” Last month, the Foothills Food Bank helped over 330 families in Carefree, Cave Creek, Anthem, Desert Hills, New River, North Scottsdale and North Phoenix. Paul Patranella (left) and Bill Allen

It’s an unlikely name for a food show, but History’s “Hairy Bikers” puts the aptly hirsute Paul Patranella, a four-star, classically trained French chef – whose many honors include serving as President George W. Bush’s chef – and his best friend and riding partner, renowned motorcycle mechanic Bill Allen, out on the highways, where they meet the people who make some of America’s most interesting dishes. Not only do they cook and eat with them, but in many cases they hunt, kill and clean their dinner in the process, whether it’s spearing bullfrogs, trawling for shrimp, capturing gators with a crossbow or even preparing roadkill. Lifelong friends who used to ride together, the two put their hell-raising days behind them to raise their families, but this show gave them the opportunity of a lifetime to take in more of America than they ever expected to meet, greet or eat.

The Thirsty Lion took over a spot I used to enjoy going to, but this keeps growing on me as well. I love the hardwood floors and the dark round tables; it just sets the mood. The layout is clean but inviting. Happy hour is Monday-Friday 3-6pm and all items are six dollars and under. The pub chip nachos are a chart topper for me with house made potato chips, pepper jack, cheddar, provolone, mozzarella, bacon, onion, tomato, and chipotle aioli for just under $6. I also could not help myself and I had a little pinot for only $4 as well. All of their appetizer plates are under six dollars, and their domestic beers are $3.50, wine, well, and margaritas are $4. 2000 East Rio Salado Parkway Tempe, AZ 85281

Not everyone has their Thanksgiving at home; sometimes it is just too stressful… not to mention a mess! A great alternative is Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort; they will be hosting a Thanksgiving Brunch from 11-3pm. For $38.95 a person ($18.95 ages 4-12) you can choose your dishes from a beautiful menu of Thanksgiving treats. There will be an omelet station and waffle station where you can build what it is that you would like to feast on. A “Cold Fare” display will also be there with your fruits and salads. With salmon, turkey, pork loin and other offerings you cannot really go wrong. For your sweet endings there will be pastries, and fondue, and your traditional pies. I have gone out to restaurants for Thanksgiving before, and it is actually really nice to meet up with your family and have others take care of you. 1 N. San Marcos Place Chandler, Arizona 85225

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

THIS WEEKEND

Theatergoers can see Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre’s production of A Christmas Carol in Mesa or TheaterWorks’ production in Peoria. Black Theatre Troupe’s Black Nativity is performed at Playhouse on the Park and the little ones should enjoy the Great Arizona Puppet Theatre’s The Elves and the Shoemaker.

For something truly unique, Fountain Hills Community Theatre’s Christmas Jukebox allows the audience the opportunity to select the tunes performed, or take Sister Christmas’ Catechism class in Scottsdale. Space 55 Theatre’s A Bloody Mary Christmas II is billed as “the most irreverent and bawdy Christmas musical ever produced.” Treat the little ones to Childsplay’s Lyle the Crocodile at Tempe Center for the Arts. It’s the holidays in NYC. Drop in on the Primms and their new guest; a tap dancing, skating, and ohso-lovable crocodile. Celebrate with Valley Youth Theatre’s A Winniethe-Pooh Christmas Tail. The 24th Annual Spirit of Christmas takes place at Chandler Center for the Arts, or listen to holiday favorites like All I Want for Christmas, O Holy Night, and Believe from the motion picture Polar Express at the Phoenix Symphony’s Holiday Pops.

The Year of A Christmas Story Do you watch twenty-four hours of A Christmas Story on television beginning Christmas Eve? If so, you’re in luck! Valley theatres are inviting patrons to see live productions of the modern classic. The play is based on the autobiographical stories of Jean Shepherd growing up in Indiana. Young Ralphie Parker wants one thing for Christmas; a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-Shot Range Model Air Rifle. Will he receive it, or will he “shoot his eye out?” Grab your favorite leg lamp and enjoy this hysterical film come to life on Valley stages. 2009 Tony Award winner for Best Play rewards bad behavior in a good way From political correctness to character assassination, bad behavior has never been so good (or hilarious) as in Arizona Theatre Company’s God of Carnage, winner of the 2009 Tony Award for Best Play. Written by Yasmina Reza and translated by Christopher Hampton this production makes its Southwest premiere in Phoenix at the Herberger Theater Center and runs from November 17 - December 4, 2011. God of Carnage is sponsored in part by Shirley Estes. Arizona Theatre Company’s season sponsors are I. Michael and Beth Kasser. “Sticks and stones can break my bones”... but when Benjamin hits Henry at a nearby park, it starts two sets of parents on a comically explosive downhill slide destined for debauchery. In this universally acclaimed new comedy by the author of Art, adults come together for a civilized evening of coffee, cake and conversation about their kids. But frayed nerves soon surface and the grownups begin to outdo their

pugnacious children in bad behavior and moral corruption, disproving the notion that “words can never hurt me.” God of Carnage is a hilariously harrowing look at the minefield of modern relationships. God of Carnage contains mature language. “It’s a special joy to work on a play that isn’t afraid to have its characters behave horribly and savagely - but only in the most delicious and hilarious ways,” said Director Rick Lombardo. “And I know in this company we have four fearless actors who are going to take us along on this very wild comic ride. As the audience watches these two ‘highly civilized’ couples devolve into practically Neanderthal behavior over a simple dispute, we are reminded how very close to the caveman we may all still be.” God of Carnage is a co-production with San Jose Repertory Theatre, where it will play from March 22 April 15, 2012. Adult tickets start at $32 depending on date and section choice and are available at www.arizonatheatre. org or by calling the box office at (602) 256-6995. $10 student ticket pricing is now available for all performances. Discounts are available for seniors and active military on specific performance days. Half-price rush tickets are available for balcony seating for all performances one hour prior to curtain at the Herberger Theater Center (subject to availability). Pay What You Can for God of Carnage is November 20 at 7:00 PM. Balcony seats for this performance are available for a suggested $10 donation. (Tickets must be purchased in the Herberger Theater Center lobby starting at 6 PM on November 20. Seating is first-come first served and is not guaranteed. Cash only, please. Two tickets per person maximum.) For discounts on groups of eight or more, call (602) 256-6995.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL AT BROADWAY PALM IS “SPIRITED ENTERTAINMENT” Charles Dickens’ timeless story, A Christmas Carol plays through December 25, 2011 at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre. This spectacular Broadway Musical version of A Christmas Carol was originally presented by Radio City Entertainment at The Theatre at Madison Square Garden and ran for ten years. The New York Times has called A Christmas Carol “a tonic for adults, and for children a transfixing journey.” The music is by

Alan Menken, who wrote the music for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid. Lyrics are by Lynn Ahrens. Book is by Mike Ockrent and Lynn Ahrens. A Christmas Carol takes place in Victorian London in 1843. It’s the classic tale of the crotchety, cantankerous miser Ebenezer Scrooge. He notoriously welcomes each Christmas season with his very familiar “Bah Humbug” and makes it clear that he has no intention of enjoying the holiday. On the night before Christmas Scrooge is visited by three spirits; the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. They show him cheerful memories from his past,

A Christmas Carol is directed by ariZoni award winner M. Seth Reines with choreography by Kerry Lambert. The production features set design by Tom Tutino, costume design by John P. White, lighting design by Russell A. Thompson, orchestrations by JR McAlexander and sound design by Chris Kockler. The role of Ebenezer Scrooge is played by Jim France. This will be the third time that France has played Scrooge in this version of A Christmas Carol, the fifth time playing Scrooge during his acting career. When asked what he loved about the role, France said “It’s

The Best Beers You Can’t Drink (at least not in Arizona) As we move into the holiday season and peoples’ thoughts turn to gift giving, you may be tempted to look for some special beers for your favorite beer writer, and send them to him care of AZ Weekly. Well if that’s the case we should look at the best beers out there that we can’t get in Arizona. Of course you will need to do some creative shopping either over the internet or through friends that live elsewhere (and check out the legalities of shipping beer first), but the right gift is worth the trouble. So here are some of the most requested beers that we don’t get in Arizona.

is one of the breweries in the country), craft enthusiasts do enjoy their beers, and for many area natives who have moved away, it is the first beer they look for upon a return visit. They also can be credited for the first bottled Black and Tan in 1986.

One of the most requested beers is Yuengling. This Pottsville, Pennsylvania brewery bills itself as America’s Oldest Brewery, and given its continuous operation since 1829, they seem to be correct. Their flagship beer is Yuengling Traditional Lager which has a subtle malt sweetness with a hint of hops. It is so well known in the Philadelphia area, most people simply order a lager and receive it. While not a craft brewery (it

The other beers that we don’t currently get here are definitely in the craft category. Russian River is at the top of that list. Located in Santa Rosa, California, this brewery runs parallel paths, producing some incredible IPAs as well as some of the best Belgian style beers around. Pliny the Elder, named for the 1st Century Roman author and Philosopher, is considered to be the first Double IPA and is recognized as one of the best. ... continued from Page 46. Many East Coast craft beers don’t make it to Arizona due to the distance and expense involved in shipping. Two that Arizonans have been patiently waiting for are Brooklyn Brewing and Victory. Brooklyn Brewing, located appropriately enough in Brooklyn, is known for making uncommonly good food beers and brewmaster Garrett Oliver is considered by most to be the foremost authority on food and beer pairing in the country. His beer dinners are legendary and accomplished chefs defer to his expertise when planning menus for these events. Lately the series of big bottle beers including Local One and Local Two, as well as Black Ops, have been exciting our fellow beer drinkers in the east. Victory Brewing is located in Downingtown, PA and produces one of the best American made Pilsners in the Prima Pils, they also make Hop Devil IPA as well as the very dangerous Golden Monkey Belgian Triple. At 8% alcohol by volume and incredibly smooth, Golden Monkey can sneak up on you.

New Glarus Brewing in Wisconsin produces some very sought after beers. Their line at the Great American Beer Festival is always one of the longest. Despite being distributed exclusively in their home state, they are still one of the twenty largest craft breweries in the country. Spotted Cow, a farmhouse style ale, Wisconsin Belgian Red, Raspberry Tart and their Unplugged series are particularly large selling products for them. No craft beer lover can go to Wisconsin without bringing back some New Glarus. Boulevard Brewing, from Kansas City is also a high demand beer. Bully Porter and the Smokestack series are just a few of the beers they make that are asked for regularly. Boulevard Brewing in Kansas City bill themselves as the “second largest brewery in Missouri,” although they are just a few million barrels behind number one. They make an outstanding collection of core beers including one of the best porters out there, Bully Porter and their Single Wide IPA, both of which are amazing. They

Hello again beer lovers, today lets chat about Faster, Bigger, Better, Bolder, a Bruery/Dogfish Head Collaboration. Created to raise money for Japan’s continuing efforts to recover from tsunami damage, this beer is brewed with kumquats and a seven spice Schichimi Togarashi blend including ginger, cayenne, white sesame seeds, black sesame seeds, nori and poppy seeds along with sake yeast. Interesting to say the least and certainly in line with Dogfish Head’s odd brewing practices.

BEER! SECTION

FASTER, BIGGER, BETTER, BOLDER - Gradually, Quietly, Steadily…

A golden peach color greets you as the beer is poured from the bottle and finishes at the top of your glass with a thick white head. On the nose there is quite a bit of citrus following through on the palate with lively carbonation, a big fruity phenolic character and spicy hints of pepper for an odd yet refreshing experience. The Kumquats and spices work well to balance each other and lend to a dry delicate finish that seems odd in a beer with such complexity. ABV. sits at 8.25%and is noticeable but certainly not offending. For some reason, as I had my first a sip of this strange collaboration, the scene in Revenge of the Nerds where the Asian bloke has his First Taste of Beer came to mind. Can anyone say Hair Pie? A bit odd I know, but GOD I miss that movie! Silliness aside, this odd little brew would pair well with spicy chicken and vegetable dishes as well as crème fresh tarts with seasonal fruit or zesty lemon bars. On the liquor side you might try sipping a shot of Southern Comfort or a good Irish whiskey while enjoying this brew. I have a feeling both would couple quite nicely.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeverages.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

As always keep sending those comments and questions to kingjamesswann@gmail. com. If you take anything from today’s article, remember why this Collaboration was created. Its holiday season and many people around the world will never be fortunate enough to try this beer or to live as well as we do. Keep them in your hearts. Cheers.

Dirk Auer skates down an 860 metre roller coaster in just 60 seconds! An adrenaline junkie has taken in-line skating to new heights and set a new world record after racing down a roller coaster at speeds of 56mph. Dirk Auer decided to go where no sane man or woman had gone before and skated down an 860 metre track in just over a minute. Wearing specially designed in-line skates, the German made the attempt on the Mammoth roller coaster at the Trips Drill theme park in Stuttgart, Germany. “The roller coaster is wooden and so unlike rides made from iron and steel there was always a chance of the odd nail 4:15 PM or screw that would not be entirely flat. If the skates were to catch a stray nail then I could have fallen and I would almost certainly have died,” 36-yearold Dirk Auer said. MOUNTAIN BOARDING Thrill seekers venture upwards in the steep alpine terrain of Slovenia! Apart from trekking and hiking, the rolling hills and mountains of Slovenia offers many other more adrenaline pumping sports like mountain boarding. If you’re a fanatic snowboarder but can’t wait for winter to come - you can practice your boarding skills even in summer. For example, in a ski resort in Velika Planina you’ll get your equipment and the instructors then teach you the basics of mountain boarding. Climbing up the heart-pounding steep cliffs, Triglav Mountain can be a real challenge for even the experienced mountain climber, but the dramatic alpine scenery is well worth the effort.

Kerry Shaw, a South African media executive making the adrenaline-pumping feat! Adrenaline junkies are always in search of something new and thrilling. Do you fancy yourself as a bit of an adrenaline-junkie? If yes, then I can suggest you the latest must-do diving experience, Crocodile Cage Diving. You heard right swimming with killer crocodiles! Not for faint-hearted, it’s a daring task that is offered only in South Africa at the Cango Ranch. What makes this so daring is that these crocodiles are 4m long and are indeed man-eating predators. They view humans as their prey. Daredevils who wish to attempt this adrenalinepumping feat are slowly lowered into the heated crocodile pool along with 5 large Nile crocodiles and are protected from the predators by a specially designed cage. Guarded by the strong cage, the crocodiles swim around you sizing you up as a tasty snack. So, what are you waiting for? Gather your courage and GO!

PLENTY OF POSTTHANKSGIVING FUN AT CELEBRITY THEATRE Country Superstar Clint Black with Arrowheart Sunday, November 27th at 7pm Put on your dancin’ boots with one of country music’s biggest stars. Clint Black was one of the first new traditional country singers to revive the old soul of country. Many credit him with fusing traditional country songwriting and hook-laden, radiorock sensibilities to birth more airwave-friendly country music. Black’s barbed hooks, Stetson hat,

and manly vocals inspired everyone from Garth Brooks to Brother Johnson. All told, the multi-award winning Black has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide -- not bad for a high school dropout. Arrowheart is an all female country rock group with unrivaled vocals and harmonies. They are currently putting the finishing touches on their first album. Their singles can be found on iTunes. Doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets ($35 and $45) are still available at Celebrity Theatre or online at www. celebritytheatre.com. To charge by phone, call 602-267-1600 ext.1. All tickets are subject to a surcharge. Celebrity Theatre is located at 440 N. 32nd St., in Phoenix.

Mötley Crüe’s Vince Neil with Skid Row Saturday, December 3rd at 8pm 93.3 KDKB presents holiday rockers with the 1st Annual Miracle on 32nd Street featuring Mötley Crüe lead vocalist Vince Neil and special guest Skid Row with proceeds to benefit the Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Vince Neil’s unmistakable voice leads some of the greatest rock songs of this generation including “Shout At The Devil,” “Home Sweet Home,” “Girls, Girls, Girls,” “Dr. Feelgood,” “Kickstart My Heart” and “Same Ol Situation.” The rock icon’s current release Tattoos & Tequila (and a tell-all book of the same) is a compilation of nine genre-defining covers that have been given the Vince Neil rock renewal treatment plus two new tracks. In addition to selling 80 million records around the world as the notorious front man for Mötley Crüe, Neil has also enjoyed a successful solo career. His albums Exposed and Carved In Stone spurred the hits “You’re Invited (But Your Friend Can’t Come),” “Can’t Have Your Cake” and “Sister Of Pain.” Special guests Skid Row distinguished

themselves from legions of other metal bands of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s chiefly by their attitude. Best-known albums include their five times platinumselling debut album Skid Row (1989) and its follow up, the heavier, double platinum-selling Slave to the Grind (1991). Major hits include “18 and Life,” “I Remember” and “Youth Gone Wild.” Original members Dave Sabo (guitar, backing vocals), Rachel Bolan (bass, backing vocals), Scotti Hill (guitar), along with longtime member Johnny Solinger (lead vocals) and newest addition Rob Hammersmith (drums) make up the band. Friday, December 30th Rich in harmony and deep in history, New Edition is arguably the reason why acts such as Usher and B2K have been making females faint during recent years. With a musical legacy dating as far back as 1978, the group has experienced success on multiple levels to become true legends in the game. Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell, Ronnie DeVoe, Ralph Tresvant, Johnny Gill and Bobby Brown have continually set precedents in R&B, with solo albums, side group efforts (Bell Biv Devoe, LSG), and behind-the-scenes power moves (Bivins discovered acts like Boyz II Men). Their story is one full of triumphs and setbacks. After talent shows led to their discovery by Maurice Starr, their

As all close friends do, they eventually came back together, enjoying renewed success since signing with the Bad Boy label, owned by Sean P. Diddy Combs, in 2002. Currently the group is recording new music, touring and supporting community events through the New Edition Foundation.

independent debut Candy Girl hit shelves in 1983, featuring the hits “Candy Girl” and “Popcorn Love.” The success of that record helped them move to the majors, putting out 1984’s double platinum New Edition and 1985’s platinum All For Love on MCA. As Bobby Brown embarked on his solo career in the late ‘80s, Johnny Gill stepped in to reinvigorate New Edition on the double platinum Heart Break in 1989. In 1996, Brown reunited with NE to release Home Again. During the promotional tour for Home Again, however, the group decided to part ways yet again.

The Night Owl BY EVELYN ROMANS

Hula’s All Night Tiki It’s Thanksgiving time again which means stuffing your face with turkey, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. Thursday is bound to be filled with the same food and conversation with family and for most people, that conversation entails defending yourself from the scrutiny revolving around the life choices you made this year. Ever since I was promoted to the adult’s table, I’ve had to ensure my wine glass remained full to numb the pain of dealing with a loving but devastatingly blunt, nagging mother who never ceases to comment on the amount of beverages consumed by myself and siblings. Perhaps this year I can appease her by having my fill of the hard stuff the night before at Hula’s Modern Tiki during their all night Happy Hour. Back in the Pilgrim day, those Natives and New Englanders would never have imagined their descendents spending their Thanksgiving eve at an island themed bar but I don’t believe they would protest it. People go to happy hour to drink after a day of working hard at their job. Americans eat more than usual on Thanksgiving to celebrate working hard for their families and communities all year. Hula’s All Night Tiki is helping Phoenicians honor both traditions with an extended happy hour so you can be ready to work hard at getting along with your families the next day. So go, be merry, and enjoy yourself—it’s what Papa Pilgrim would have wanted. Wednesday, November 23rd. 3:30 pm – 12:00 am. 4700 North Central Avenue, Phoenix. Bring 2 canned goods and get 5 Hula bucks to benefit the Phoenix Rescue Mission. Narcisse Champagne and Tea Lounge What better place to put a bar encouraging narcissism than in Scottsdale—the town is filled with gorgeous people. According to Greek mythology, Narcissus thought he was the hottest dude on the planet and was so proud that a spirit lured him to a pool where hot stuff saw his beautiful self in the water’s reflection and fell in love with it. He was so enamored with his own beauty that he never left and legend has it that he turned into the flower we know today as the Narcissus. Narcisse is a place that will nurture your love for yourself and let you rejoice in your

attractiveness. This lounge’s décor will have you glancing at your reflection every time you walk by one of the many mirrors planted on the walls. To add to the self-indulgent mood, sip on the many options of bubbly as you move your body provocatively to the sounds on DJs Noah Wylie and Tim Heit on Friday. This Thanksgiving weekend, pop a bottle and be thankful for being sexy. Friday, November 24th. 15257 N. Scottsdale Road. Ages 21+ Eco Fashion Show This weekend is going to be wonderfully long so why not do something different and go to a fashion show promoting the growth of science and sustainability in our community. The Museum of Science and Sustainability is a museum in progress and is reaching out to the public for help in funding their cause. Designers Meat Market Vintage and Eco Village Designs will be showcasing their fashions at Bragg’s Pie Factory in Phoenix this Saturday and aren’t you just a little curious to see what their fabrics are made out of? Also at this fundraiser will be vender booths, a silent auction, and performing arts to bring culture into your holiday weekend and not just the raw want for material goods sure to be experienced on Black Friday. Go for the environment, the change of pace, or for the model watching. Saturday, November 26th. 7 pm – 9 pm. 1301 W. Grand Ave, Phoenix. $5.

Got a hot event? Grand opening? Cool new promotion? Undiscovered gem? Please write to Evelyn at Nightowl@azweeklymagazine.com to possibly be featured here each week. Please include pictures when possible.

You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something -- your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life. Steve Jobs

I wanted to live the life, a different life. I didn’t want to go to the same place every day and see the same people and do the same job. I wanted interesting challenges. Harrison Ford

WORDS FROM THE WISE

Francesca Wolfsohn

“Generosity is a principle… not an amount.”

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. John F. Kennedy

Life is like a coin. You can spend it any way you wish, but you only spend it once. Lillian Dickson

Occasionally in life there are those moments of unutterable fulfillment which cannot be completely explained by those symbols called words. Their meanings can only be articulated by the inaudible language of the heart. Martin Luther King, Jr. AZWeeklyMagazine.com
