When you’re a fish out of water, you have two choices: grow legs and assimilate, or be unapologetic and work that tail. Dr. Zoe Hart (Rachel Bilson) of “Hart of Dixie” on The CW, is a New York doctor who finds herself in the small town of Bluebell, Ala., and has wisely chosen the latter. And the show’s costume designer, Meredith MarkworthPollack, doesn’t let us forget that Zoe is a New Yorker through and through, against a Bluebell backdrop that is pastels and florals ad nauseam. “It’s very much a New York kind of chicness,” says Markworth-Pollack of Zoe’s black and gray palette. “From the beginning it was scripted that she had a very savvy sense of style so the outfits are not your typical doctor outfits – especially in Alabama.” The style is structured and minimalist and incorporates patterns, stripes, fitted shapes and the occasional bold color.

‘Peter Pan’ Projects

Peter Pan

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

“Hook” (1991) Though the captain is the title character – as played by Dustin Hoffman – Peter remains very much a part of the proceedings, as portrayed by Robin Williams, in this Steven Spielberg-directed take. Julia Roberts is Tinker Bell, and in one of her first film roles, Gwyneth Paltrow plays the young Wendy. “Peter Pan” (2003) It was somewhat stunning to suddenly find an actual youngster – in this case, Jeremy Sumpter – as Peter in a liveaction version of the story. Director P.J. Hogan (“My Best Friend’s Wedding”) gives the film lots of texture, with a big assist from Jason Isaacs as an effectively creepy Hook. December 1st, 2011 - December 7th, 2011

refreshing authenticity of their actions. Having said that, ‘Answers to Nothing’ may very well be the most horrifically depressing motion picture of the year. Playing exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. (R – 123 minutes) Joseph: “Featuring a surprisingly pensive performance from comedian Dane Cook, writer/director Matthew Leutwyler’s ensemble drama ‘Answers to Nothing’ is a spectacular – if sobering – cinematic effort. However, said surprise is only one piece of the puzzle, as the movie’s complex characters captivate you with the

Stan: “With sci-fi as my favorite genre, the base premise for the staple of ‘the end is near, prepare’ is aptly presented as Lars von Trier’s story unfolds, with metaphoric meticulousness at the onset as actress Kirsten Dunst dramatically adds credibility to the theme of the approaching and nearing end. The graveness of the impending doom begins to loose it psychological impact as the physicality of the end is presented, leaving one with the thought of a twist on the familiar line: the ‘proverbial bark is better than the bite’ that ‘Melancholia’ presents for the ending.” Grade: CJoseph: “Distinctly divided into two parts, writer/director Lars von Trier’s sci-fi drama ‘Melancholia’ is 50 percent genius and 50 percent nonsense. The genius is strictly confined to the film’s first part, during which actress Kirsten Dunst gives the most powerful performance of her career. The nonsense is essentially the entire second part of von Trier’s project, during which the filmmaker discards the previous part’s poignant portrayal of self-destruction in favor of pretentiously paced mass destruction. As a result, halfway through ‘Melancholia,’ the viewer cannot wait for the world to end because it means the movie finally will, too.” Grade: C

Although it is not nearly as creative as last year’s wildly ridiculous ‘Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale,’ writer/ director Dick Maas’s holiday horror flick ‘Saint’ distorts the treasured tradition of Santa Claus just enough to delight demented viewers and discourage them from doing anything that would cause them to accidentally wind up on the jolly old man with the mutilated face’s naughty list. And, to think, for several centuries the threat of coal in one’s stocking was sufficient.” Grade: B

Soundbite Spotlight The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf movies recently released in theaters.

Actress Elizabeth Mitchell (‘Answers to Nothing’) By Joseph J. Airdo “The role was interesting to me because it was so quietly and beautifully written. I really love good writing. I know that sounds ridiculous but it

Dane Cook as Ryan and Elizabeth Mitchell as Kate in “Answers to Nothing,” directed by Matthew Leutwyler.Photo Credit: David Jones was such a pleasure to have these lines and to say them. worked really hard. I was really impressed with him. I had a great time with him. I was kind of amazed how different he is than what you would think he would be like. He is kind of a stand-up guy – which I probably should not say because he has got a reputation to uphold.” – Elizabeth Mitchell

I found [my character] really interesting. I liked her. I liked her desperation. I liked the fact that she did not confront [her husband]. All of the things that you think you would do in that situation, she did not do. And I thought that was really interesting. I think that it is a heartbreaking thing to feel like you have got life and you want this one thing so much that you cannot believe it. I understand that. Longing and wanting things and being single-minded are definitely some things with which I am familiar so I really appreciated that about her.

The movie ‘Steamboat Willy’ introduced the now famous international character of Mickey Mouse to the silver screen in 1928!

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf movies released to Blu-ray and DVD just in time for the holiday gift-giving season.

Science Fiction: ‘Another Earth’ By Stan Robinson “If you put a twist on reality, somehow that twist lets us see something even closer. We can zoom in on it … to make literal the internal world. What if you could see yourself from another perspective? What would you UltraStar Surprise Pointe Cinemas 13649 North Litchfield Road in Surprise Movie Line: 623-584-3838

feel? Would you have empathy for yourself? And when you confront a version of yourself, the connection is emotionally deep. There is something really powerful about a doppelganger and what they reveal about human empathy. Both versions of you have the same history, same secrets, same desires and same things you don’t share with anybody.” – Writer/Director Mike Cahill

Biopic: ‘The Devil’s Double’ By Randy Montgomery ‘A Fistful of Dollars’ (1964) directed by Sergio Leone, music by Ennio Morricone and featuring a man with ‘no name’ starring Clint Eastwood, is considered to be the first of the spaghetti westerns!

“I did not really know this until [playing this character] but, when you take on a role, I think that it changes you. And that is a beautiful thing. When you come out the other side, you are not the same. You experience this period of intense empathy with a stranger – another self that you have created and have lived in for a while. [This character] changed my point of view about all of the ways in which you can find yourself in different places in your life. I think the really good roles push your humanity in directions you haven’t been before and give you greater empathy for all people.” – Writer/Actress Brit Marling

“As an actor, you cannot half-heartedly do it. You have to immerse yourself. He was viscous. [I had to understand] why this maniac/monster behaved the way he did and understand the complexities of his psychology. I had to somehow get into that mindset and let go. I hated every minute of it … looking through the eyes of this monster. But it was extraordinarily liberating as an actor to be as limitless and fearless as Uday [Hussein] was. [‘The Devil’s Double’ presents] an excellent peek into the psychology of a gangster regime that ran a country. [Director Lee Tamahori] was relentless in reminding the audience of how these people ... were vicious, malicious gangsters.” – Actor Dominic Cooper

some jail time but managed to get out of it by joining a Franciscan Monastery that was doing all of these great things in the community. We ended up having dinner and I spent 2 hours alone with him. He was the sweetest guy with no irony or judgment. He was just sort of a victim of his total faith in humanity. I came out of the dinner thinking that I had totally cracked what Paul Rudd’s character was going to be. From that night on, the whole mechanics of the movie fell really rapidly into place.” – Writer/ Director Jesse Peretz

Family: ‘Spy Kids: All the Time in the World’ By Joseph J. Airdo

Comedy: ‘Our Idiot Brother’ By Joseph J. Airdo “I met the brother of one of my best friends who had been a medical marijuana farmer and had gotten arrested for going above and beyond what was legal. He was looking at maybe doing

serious about this subject matter. In a world where it is all about ‘now,’ I think it is important to remember that our past made us what we are today. You need to know it, learn from it and understand it to make a better future for yourself. I hope that [‘Sarah’s Key’] is going to stay with you and that you will think about it. I hate when movies tell people what to think. I always think that the audience is smart so I never say what to think. What I do, though, is to try to leave room for interpretation. It makes the process way more interesting.” – Director Gilles PaquetBrenner

Drama: ‘Sarah’s Key’ By Joseph J. Airdo

“You really want to be mature and

“It was real interesting to cast these Spy Kids and actually going through that whole process all over again because we pretty much started from scratch. It was fun to get back in that world and pull out the old gadgets. The whole crew was really excited about it because it had been such a big part of their lives. The thing that was on my mind the most is just how quickly time was going by seeing my kids grow up. I wanted to touch on the element of time and time moving away. I wish I could freeze time or go

“It is really funny how as soon as we got on set we fell right back into that bickering brother and sister mode. A lot of what you see on the screen was not even really written on the page. We just kind of went for it. I hope we have the opportunity to work together more because we have so much fun together. [‘Spy Kids’] was the first time that I ever had to do a lot of stunts on a set. Robert made us tougher. He was constantly making us grow. Now I can take that on to my other films and it is fun being the badass girl on the set who is not afraid to get a little dirty or work a little harder.” – Actress Alexa Vega “This one was fun and it was really cool and weird for Alexa and I to see

these two little kids playing these parts that we played 10 years ago and having them be so small. It was kind of like a reality check that we were that small and that young doing this and now we are adults. But it was a fun ride and I had a great time doing it. It never really feels like work with [Robert]. It always feels like playing. You never get tired being on Robert’s set because you are always just having fun. It was just a fun, playful, family environment and I feel really lucky that those are the sets I grew up on.” – Actor Daryl Sabara Wonder what movies we movie reviewers look forward to in December 2011? DINE! SOI 4 BANGKOK EATERY ADDS EXOTIC FRUIT TO WINTER MENU Known as the “fuzzy melon, white gourd or ash gourd” the hard to find winter melon arrives at Soi 4 Bangkok Eatery in Scottsdale this holiday season. The winter menu will include the new Pla Rad Kang dish that incorporates the fruit adding a savory, slightly sweetened, taste. The specialty dish is served with Grilled Salmon Steak, Winter Melon, Basil and Red Curry for the price of $16.00. The winter melon is a vine grown for its very large fruit but it’s actually eaten as a vegetable when it’s mature. The fruit is fuzzy when it’s young and has a thick white flesh that is sweet when eaten. By maturity, the fruit loses its hairs and develops a waxy coating, giving the rise to the name wax gourd, providing a long shelf

life. The melon may grow as large as eighty centimetres in length. Although the fruit is referred to as a “melon” the fully grown crop is not sweet. Originally cultivated in Southeast Asia, the winter melon is now widely grown in East Asia and South Asia as well.

Grand Opening! Late night grub

The winter melon is also used to make soup in the same way as daikon radishes combined with pork or beef; used to make curries, produce fruit drinks when combined with caramelized sugar such as tea as well as dried and sweetened during New Year festivals. The winter melon requires very warm weather to grow but can be kept through the winter much like winter squash. SOI 4 Bangkok Eatery is located at 8787 N. Scottsdale Rd at the SHOPS at Gainey Village. It is open for lunch Monday through Saturday, 11:30 -2:30 p.m., and dinner Monday through Thursdays 5:00 – 9:30 p.m. and until 10 p.m. Friday-Saturday. It is open on Sundays from 5:00 pm-9:30 p.m. Private parties and gatherings take place on the second floor mezzanine level. Takeout is also available. At the northwestern tip of Brooklyn, in a rambling space that once must have manufactured something, a gorgeous stage awaits a holiday celebration. White fairy lights dot black curtains, making for a twinkly, festive feel. White trees, potted white poinsettias and huge wreaths set the stage for NBC’s “A Michael Buble Christmas,” airing Tuesday, Dec. 6. Buble, the Canadian singer who would have been quite comfortable in the Rat Pack, rehearses for his first TV special. He jokes with the a cappella group Naturally 7, which tours with him. He teases the audience and tells a barely off-color joke that he loves. On a mild day in early November, those who secured tickets to the taping file in wearing holiday party clothes. The teens, wearing short skirts and teetering on heels, shriek when the warm-up comedian mentions the name Justin Bieber. Yes, the teen idol is among the guests, each singing a song in the one-hour show. Kellie Pickler, Thalia and the Puppini Sisters also join Buble. However, the guest who blows him away, Buble reveals as he takes a break in his dressing room, is Oscar the Grouch. Caroll Spinney, the human behind Oscar, visited earlier in the day. Buble is thrilled that Spinney suggested a change to the script, which he’s keeping in. Buble is having a blast. He loves Christmas so much, and during the special, photos of him as a kid sitting on Santa’s (his dad) lap are shown. Selecting songs for this was difficult because he’s so fond of so many. “I picked my favorites,” he says. “It’s a fast-paced network show. I didn’t want the special to be all music. As a viewer I wanted it to be infused with humor.” In addition to the “Sesame Street” curmudgeon, Ed Helms and Tracy Morgan have bits. Buble’s songs are Christmas standards, many of which would have been at home on a special from the 1960s. He understands that there is something inherently and terminally cool about donning a sharkskin suit, white shirt and skinny black tie. A major flirt, Buble loves to sing and have fun. It’s pretty impossible to remain immune to his charms.

It’s a tale told by many a chef – how they learned their craft at the knee of a family elder. Not Roble Ali. Though his granddad was, indeed, a caterer who once cooked for JFK, Ali – consulting chef at New York’s Avenue and star of Bravo’s new docu-series “Chef Roble & Co.” – says what he learned from his family is he likes to eat. And eat well. “A light bulb went off in my head that, ‘Hey, if I want to eat the way that I want to eat all the time, then I need to figure out how to cook!’ ” he says, laughing. “So in fourth or fifth grade I picked up a book at a book fair about making classic American sweets like brownies, chocolate chip cookies. I was like, ‘If I can buy this book and figure out how to make my own chocolate chip cookies, I am set.’ ”

Here are a few suggestions from LocalLily.com’s favorite locally owned Valley restaurants that will keep the family happy. At the Stockyards in Phoenix (5009 East Washington) you treat the family to a piece of Arizona history and a sizable slice of prime rib. 1947, The Stockyards Restaurant was opened by the “Cattle Baron” Edward Tovera and quickly became a favorite gathering place for cattlemen, bankers and politicians. A belly up to the hand carved back bar in the old western saloon is worth the trip alone. Entrée prices range $22-40 (602-273-7378). Dine under the stars at San Tan Flat in Queen Creek. Cowboy chow is served up in the lodge pole dining room our outdoors next to your very own camp fire. After dinner purchase a s’mores kit or bag of marshmellows from the bar and roast them at your table. Live music plays at the dance floor most Friday and Saturday nights. 6185 W Hunt Hwy (480-882-2995) Dinners average $8-$18 dollars. Looking for more? Four-time Pro Bowl Cardinals player Ron Wolfley opened up a neighborhood bar for everyone to come and have a good time. Wolfley’s has a laid back but modern sports bar feel to it. They have TVs around the entire restaurant and a beautiful patio with heaters to enjoy. There is a bartender there by the name of John, he is extremely knowledgeable about every kind of drink and even offers suggestions for after you leave. The happy hour is Monday-Friday 3-7pm, and offers some pretty good deals. For three dollars you have a plethora of options, including: domestic pints, well drinks, house wines, Bacardi superior rum and flavors, Captain Morgan, and Smirnoff vodka flavors all for only $3!! The deals keep on coming with $4 drinks or craft beers; Jack Daniel’s, and $5 appetizers! One of my favorite drinks is captain and pineapple; always satisfying! 21001 N. Vito’s Italian Ristorante is a must go-to in the valley. They first opened in Mesa, and now have a second location in Scottsdale. They have happy hour Monday-Friday as well as special deals for the first part of the week. The happy hour is half off their drinks and appetizers. Walk in here on Monday and you can dive in on all you can eat pasta. On Tuesdays you can get a ½ priced bottle of wine if you purchase two entrees, or a large pizza. BEER! Trappist Breweries The beer scene has had some excitement recently by the news that long sought after Westvleteren Trappist Ales will be making an appearance, albeit a limited and brief one on American Shelves. This excitement comes from the fact that there are only seven Trappist Breweries in the world, six of which are in Belgium and the other in The Netherlands. Of all of these, Westvleteren has consistently been the most difficult to get as we will see below. Anything besides these seven is, at best, an Abbey Ale, or, more occasionally a contract brewed craft beer purporting to be authentic. As we examine Trappist beers below, you will come to understand why the beer community is abuzz with the Westvleteren news. A Trappist Beer is one brewed by, or under the immediate control of, Trappist Monks. Pretty simple. Except that many breweries are associated with or licensed by a monastery that may or may not have formerly produced beer. These beers are not considered Trappist beers, but rather Abbey beers. The Trappist Order of monks started in the

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” town of La Trappe in France by a reformed member of a noble family who had been known for his worldly ways. Granted permission by the king to retire to Abbaye de la Trappe he initiated massive changes creating an order that believed in strict observance which required austerity of diet, penitential exercises and, with the exception of daily chanting, absolute silence. Granted land by the local nobility, the monks grew barley and wheat as a part of their ascetic lifestyle. To sustain them during periods of fasting, they also brewed beer – liquid bread inspired by faith, patience and a desire to reach spiritual perfection. These were the first Trappists. Driven out of France in the 1700s during the French Revolution, the Trappists fled mostly to Belgium and The Netherlands where the re-established their abbeys and began brewing beer again. Beer was produced only in sufficient quantities to provide sustenance to the monks with a portion being sold to the public to support the monastery financially. The beer became well known for its small, artisanal production qualities and was called the champagne of Belgium. In many ways these Trappist beers were the forerunners of

the American craft beer. The breweries were small, independent and brewed in traditional methods…although in reality they created the traditional methods…with nothing being added unless it enhanced the product.

In the 1990s commercial beer companies began to notice the popularity of the Trappist ales and attempted to associate themselves

... continued from Page 36. with the quality of these beers. The Trappist brewing community, in order to protect their reputations, established the International Trappist Association in 1997. They created a logo and strict criteria for acceptance in to the association and the right to use the name and symbol. Of the original eight Trappist Breweries from 1997 seven still survive. Only Mariawald in Germany no longer produces beer. Beers brewed in the Trappist tradition, but not meeting the criteria for inclusion in the association have come to be known as Abbey beers. Even beers brewed within monastery walls may not be called Trappist if they are not produced under the direct control of the monks with an economic purpose of charitable assistance, not profit. Of the seven Trappist breweries operating, two are fairly well known, three are moderately well known and two are somewhat smaller and more mysterious. Not surprisingly this has to do with availability of the product as well as the desire of the monks to become more popular. The most famous of these beers is Chimay. The monks of Abbaye Notre-Dame de Scourmont in Chimay Belgium have chosen a more aggressive approach to funding their order and their red, white and blue labels are perhaps the most well known of the Trappist beers. Produced as a dubbel, tripel and quad respectively, these beers are a fine example of Trappist brewing. The Blue or Grand Reserve is particularly suitable for aging and will evolve and improve in

flavor for up to 20 years. The other well known Trappist beer is Orval. This is the most unique of the Trappists for a couple of reasons. First, the produce only one beer; and second is that this one beer undergoes a secondary fermentation that uses 10 different strains of yeast including Brettanomyces, a wild yeast that provides a slightly sour undertone to the beer. It is also dry-hopped which serves to distinguish it further from its Trappist bretheren. The next most known Trappist beers are those from Westmalle. Producing only a dubbel and a tripel, Westmalle is considered the most influential of all the Trappist breweries. These Trappist beers speak of complexity, blending malts from Belgium, Germany and France, in conjunction with brewing water that is high in mineral spirits for a uniquely-defined style of beer. Their yeast is thought to be one of the finest and is in demand from brewers across the world that want to produce Trappist influenced beers. Rochefort is known as the most beautiful of the Trappist breweries, the beers produced at Rochefort are all dark, and known by the concentration of their corresponding worts of 6, 8 or 10. They are blended of malts and dark candy sugar, touched with German Hallertauer and Styrian Goldings Hops and undergo a warm and fast fermentation. Next is La Trappe, the only non-Belgian of the Trappist breweries. Located in The Netherlands, they are also the brewery most like secular breweries in that they produce the most different beers. The five regular production

Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout

Hello Again Beer Lovers, this week let’s chat about an exciting revelation from Left Hand Brewing. Nitro Milk Stout. Yes I know, wonderful in On Tap but not available in a bottle. Many times I have been asked where to find this perennial favorite in a six pack only to become the consummate heart breaker as I had no answer. Well, my friends I am here to tell you that your prayers have been heard. Yes I’m serious; Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout is now available in bottles! Pouring just like it does from the tap, this creamy mellow stout cascades beautifully from the bottle into your glass with a brilliant thick whipped cream head. Hints of coca, roasted coffee and crème fresh meet your nose and follow through on the palate with just a touch of hop bitterness for balance. Speaking of balance, this lightly carbonated brew conveys the perfect equilibrium of malt texture, hop bitterness and mouth feel. Coming in at 6% ABV. this very session-able sweet stout is perfect for cold, young winter nights and will satisfy your need for warmth without pushing you over the edge. Ratebeer.com scores it a 90 out of 100 possible points for overall quality and it’s easy to see why as it easily covers all the bases for color, mouthfeel, flavor and style characteristics. Great food pairings should include Beef Wellington, seasoned flank steak over salad w/ blue cheese dressing or perhaps and almond cranberry chevre w/ dark hazelnut crackers. Wow I must be hungry; all this talk about food and beer together is making my stomach rumble! That’s me, time for lunch and a pint.

They have rapidly become known for their dedication to the art of brewing and their beers are of outstanding quality. I have left for last Sint Sixtusabdij van Westvleteren. This monastery is without question the most mysterious and least understood of all the Trappist beer producing monasteries. The Westvleteren 12 is one of the holy grails of beer drinking. It is difficult to come by and, when available, will sell for as much as $30 for an 11.2 oz bottle. The scarcity of this product is partially responsible for it regularly appearing on lists as the

number one beer in the world. Why is it so scarce? The brothers at the abbey produce no more than they absolutely need to maintain the abbey and reject all commercial attempts to sell their beer. In order to purchase this beer, one must telephone the abbey several weeks in advance to secure an appointment to buy whichever of the three production beers will be available on that particular day. On the scheduled day, the purchaser arrives to the monastery, which is extremely difficult to get to and requires a very good map, pulls up to the gate, exchanges money with the brother in charge and the beer (no more than two cases) is loaded in to the trunk. Purchasers are also required to acknowledge that the beer is for personal consumption and is not for re-sale. The only other spot to purchase the beer in accordance with the monk’s wishes is at In Da Vrede, a small café across from the monastery which is perhaps the best place in the world to sit and consume this spectacular beer. Beer does show up in the market from time to time, but all of it is re-sale against the monks’ wishes

Given all of this it is understandable why folks are anxiously awaiting the limited release of the Westvleteren beers in the United States. They will supposedly be in the form of a gift pack with the proper glassware. Rumor has it that less than 10,000 cases will arrive for the entire country, and it is supposed to be a one-time deal. The beer is not expected until sometime in the Summer of 2012 so certainly more details will be forthcoming as the release approaches. We could write thousands of words about the Trappist beers and may do so at a later date. In the meantime, remember if its not one of the seven beers listed here, it is not a Trappist beer. The other thing to remember is that these seven breweries produce some of the finest beer in the world, all of which is worth seeking out and trying. In fact, what a good idea, I may have a La Trappe Quad tucked away in my cellar, perhaps I should go dig it out.

11/1/11

The world of extreme sports is full of the unusual, unnatural, and totally unbelievable when it comes to what people are willing to do in the pursuit of excitement and athleticism. Imagine yourself facing raging whitewater rapids with nothing but a tiny, unstable kayak that serves only to remind you of how fragile you are in comparison to the river. Or picture yourself leaping out of a plane at 12,000 feet with nothing but a thin piece of fabric to stop you from smashing into the ground at terminal velocity. These sports may sound terrifying to the average Joe, but there are even 4:15 PM stranger head-scratchers out there, including these 7 that baffle and bemuse.

1. Strongman Competition. Have you ever seen a human being haul a big rig attached to him by a giant chain? How about an airplane? Can you imagine watching a single, muscle-bound man deadlift a car that weighs more than half a ton? If you witness the strongman competition, you will see these

42

events and more. This annual event determines who will hold the international title of World’s Strongest Man. 2. Man vs. Horse Marathon. This cross-country marathon is just what you might imagine (but would never wager to guess), with men on horseback racing men on foot for dominance on a course that goes through the streets, fields, and streams of Llanwrtyd Wells in Wales. If you don’t think you’ve got the stamina to outrun a horse, then this extreme sport probably isn’t for you.

3. Wife Carrying. This is just what it sounds like (and just as amusing). Competitors must not only make their way through a brutal obstacle course, they must do it with a wife on their back (upside down, it seems). Whether it has to be their own wife is unclear, but one thing is certain; any woman who will put her face in that proximity to a man’s nether region is probably on more than a first-name basis with him. 4. Cheese Rolling. You have to be smarter (and faster) than a wheel of cheese to excel at this sport. Your competition? You guessed it: Gloucester. Here are the rules: you start at the top of a big hill, the cheese gets a 1 second lead, and then you throw yourself over

5. Octopush. If hockey players carried out their athletic pursuit in swim trunks and goggles (and consequently, underwater), it might looks something like this strange sport. Leave it to those from the southern hemisphere to come up with this upside-down (literally) attempt at sporting. Two teams battle to push a puck across the bottom of the pool into a goal at either end. Sadly, this is a noncontact sport, otherwise we might

get some slow-mo cross-checking into the, uh, tile. Nevermind. This sport is almost extremely cool. Mostly it’s just strange. 6. Bathtub Racing. The bathtub racing capital of the world is in Nanaimo, a coastal city on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. The fastpaced sport started in the 1960s when a local fisherman fitted a motor to a dirty old bathtub and raced his bathtub against friends. Incredibly, bathtub racing has grown into a highly competitive international sport where entrants spend upwards of $10,000 on building light-weight fibre glass vessels. However, the high-speed boats with roaring engines are still moulded around a traditional bathtub design. The annual race is held in Nanaimo harbour every July and attracts racers from as far away as Australia.

7. Tuna Throwing. You guessed it, Tuna Throwing was invented where else but Austalia. The motion is very similar to the Olympic and athletics field sport of hammer throwing - only the ball and chain are replaced by a Tuna fish with a rope tied to its tale and weighing up to 10Kg. The competition has become a local festival that is watched by hundreds of people each year on January 26 and 27. The current tuna-throwing record is held by former Olympic hammer thrower Sean Calin who tossed a Tuna 37.23 metres. However, replica Tuna designed by an artist were

introduced in 2008 to avoid wasting good fish. Winners of the event take home $1,000.

Batman: Arkham City

This Action/Thriller is rated PG-13 (Some Menace|Intense Sequences of Violence) and stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/ Batman and Heath Ledger as The Joker.

Rated T for Teen (Alcohol Reference, Blood, Mild Language, Suggestive Themes, Use of Tobacco, Violence)

What It’s About... With the help of allies Lt. Jim Gordon and DA Harvey Dent, Batman has been able to keep a tight lid on crime in Gotham City. But when a vile young criminal calling himself the Joker suddenly throws the town into chaos, the caped Crusader begins to tread a fine line between heroism and vigilantism. What the Critics are Saying... Sensational, grandly sinister and not for the kids, “The Dark Knight” elevates pulp to a very high level. Heath Ledger’s Joker takes it higher still, and the actor’s death lends the film an air of a funeral and a rollicking, outof-control wake mixed together. The film, which improves upon the solemn authority director Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne brought to “Batman Begins,” has an atmospheric shimmer all its own. It’s a brooding crime saga with some spectacular action sequences. - AAAA

When several blocks of Gotham City are walled off and all of Gotham’s criminals are left to fend for themselves within, the lunatics take over the asylum and Batman must use his arsenal of fists, gadgets and detective skills to unravel a conspiracy that threatens the guilty and innocent alike. With a huge amount of ground to cover, a bigger, better arsenal of gadgets, a rogues gallery of baddies including the Joker, Two-Face, Mr. Freeze and Ra’s Al Ghul and an open ended, sandbox style of gameplay, Arkham City takes a great formula and brings it to a whole new level. No super hero game had ever delivered like Batman: Arkham Asylum and this awesome followup is as good or better in virtually every respect. A pointy-eared, black caped knock-out. - AAAA

Celebrate the Season with The Irish Tenors

Sunday, December 4th at the Celebrity Theatre

The powerful lineup of The Irish Tenors’ Finbar Wright, Anthony Kearns and Ronan Tynan reunite for exclusive dates this December, including a December 4th concert at the intimate Celebrity Theatre. Show time is set for 7 p.m. The Irish Tenors celebrate the season

with a special concert of classic Irish ballads and traditional carols. Whenever thoughts turn to Ireland and Irish music, The Irish Tenors immediately spring to mind. Ranked as Ireland’s premier ambassadors of song, they entertain audiences worldwide with a quality of performance that goes unrivaled. Known for their soothing and nostalgic mix of Emerald Isle numbers like “Danny Boy” and “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling,” there is no question the trio with their beautifully trained voices embodies the tradition of the grand Irish tenor. Dublin-born performer Tynan became famous after 9/11 for singing “God Bless America” during the seventh-inning stretch at Yankees games. This heartfelt and patriotically charged endeavor is present and palpable at every

concert, on every stage – whether it be Ellis Island in New York harbor, The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Sydney Opera House in Australia, or at home by the shores of the lakes of Killarney, the passion in their voices is unashamed, abundant and free. The Irish Tenors were started in 1998 by television producer Bill Hughes for a PBS special The Irish Tenors. By the fall of 2004, after the albums We Three Kings and Heritage reached success, The Irish Tenors had nearly become a household name, possibly due to many appearances on The Today Show, Good Morning America, Live With Regis And Kelly, 20/20 and A&E Breakfast With

include “Keep It Right Here” (1993), “Forbidden Fruit” (1994) and “Body Rhythm” (1996). After moving from his home in Connecticut to Phoenix, Meadows signed with Heads Up International, a division of Concord Music Group, and released another six hit CDs, the most recent of which is “Secrets” (2009). The concert is part of the Jazz in Concert series produced by Jazz in AZ and the Kerr Center, and made possible by generous support from the Jazzbird Foundation. Tickets are $24 or $29-reserved, available at the box office, 6110 N. Scottsdale Road (west off Rose Lane), Scottsdale, 85253, by phone at 480-596-2660 or on the website, www.jazzinaz.org

Having worked with numerous artists and musicians throughout his career, Meadows became a well-known sideman in his own right, recording or performing over the years with Brook Benton, Eartha Kitt, Phyllis Hyman, Jean Carne, The Temptations, Michael Bolton, Angela Bofill, Will Downing and Native American flute player Douglas Spotted Eagle. In the late ’80s, Meadows stretched his usual pop/jazz boundaries as a member of a New York avant-garde band called the Aboriginal Music Society. The ’90s marked the beginning of his solo career when he signed with RCA on the strength of his unreleased first album. He became a staple of the smooth jazz format with his subsequent recordings, which

Anniversary Snow Party at Axis Radius Good old Axis Radius, you’ve been around for a long time and there’s a reason for this. I think the majority of Scottsdale club goers have been to this massive double club at least once and have had a fun, if not interesting experience. Everyone prefers one side over the other and as I think back on the many memories I’ve had there, I remember spending most of my time on the Radius side. It’s the best side to be in during the scorching summer months when everyone on the dance floor eagerly awaits the next cold air/ white mist spraying round to cool their sweat drenched bodies initiated by all the dancing. Depending on how much energy you put into your boogie or how much you want to impress your dance partner with what you think are sexy moves, you may not sweat all that much this upcoming Saturday in December. Instead, you’re probably going to be dancing to stay warm--not because it’s cold outside, but because there will be 10 tons of real snow to make you feel like it’s actually winter time. To add to the festivities, liquor snow cones will be available (yum?) to get you loose enough to at least feel cool on the dance floor where Rockit! Scientists and DJ Soloman will be monitoring the vibe to match their beats. Friday, December 2nd. 9 pm – 2 am. $10.

Bart B More at Smashboxx DJs are the new rock stars especially in Scottsdale where every club or bar that’s worth standing in line for has its own resident DJ. Although most people go to old town to get funked up, there are the many who remain coherent

enough to recognize good music from bad. An awful DJ that pushes out terrible music is a deadly virus to any club and people stay away from that nasty. Thankfully, Smashboxx is not one of those clubs. I’ve gone to Smashboxx and partied there completely sober and still had a blast because the DJ knows what he’s doing. And the great taste in jams is consistent—that’s vital. This Friday, Bart B More will be bringing that awesome Dutch dance flavor to Scottsdale. Like his Netherlands compatriots Tiesto and Afrojack, Bart B More seems to know how to create mixes that make dance enthusiasts go wild on the floor. Some of his official remixes include artists Cee Lo Green, Steve Aoki, Crookers, and Tiesto-impressive, right? His show is bound to produce some interesting dance moves this weekend. Once your brain is hit with his sound, the only way it’ll know how to process the beats is to make your body move in its best rhythmic fashion. You’ll be sure to burn off the leftover Thanksgiving foods you’ve been eating all week. Friday, December 2nd. 9 pm – 2 am. $12.

Got a hot event? Grand opening? Cool new promotion? Undiscovered gem? Please write to Evelyn at Nightowl@azweeklymagazine.com to possibly be featured here each week. Please include pictures when possible.

Scream 4

Release Date: October 4th This Horror Film is rated R (Some Teen Drinking|Language|Strong Bloody Violence) and stars Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott and Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers. What It's About... It has been many years since the Ghostface Killer cut a deadly path through the town of Woodsboro. In order to get over the trauma of those horrific events, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has written a self-help book. She returns to Woodsboro for her book tour, and reconnects with old friends Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Sheriff Dewey (David Arquette). However, Sidney's arrival also sparks the return of Ghostface, putting Sidney and everyone she loves in danger.

Bridesmaids

Release Date: September 20th This Comedy is rated R (Some Strong Sexuality|Language Throughout) and stars Kristen Wiig as Annie and Maya Rudolph as Lillian. What It's About... Annie (Kristen Wiig) is a single woman whose own life is a mess, but when she learns that her lifelong best friend, Lillian (Maya Rudolph), is engaged, she has no choice but to serve as the maid of honor. Though lovelorn and almost penniless, Annie, nevertheless, winds her way through the strange and expensive rituals associated with her job as the bride's go-to gal. Determined to make things perfect, she gamely leads Lillian and the other bridesmaids down the wild road to the wedding. What the Critics are Saying... Annie, an unemployed pastry chef, is a bit of a sad sack. When her best friend, Lillian, recruits Annie to be her maid of honor, Annie's ego gradually absorbs a series of blows inflicted by Lillian's newfound best pal, Helen, who barges into the planning and execution of the wedding. This means war! This Judd Apatow produced comedy wages war all right, but with more than the usual R-rated rom-com subtlety. Some scenes work, some others go a tad too far, but Wiig's savvy and subtle instincts serve her and the film well. - AAA

Captain America: The First Avenger

Release Date: October 25th This Action/Adventure is rated PG-13 (Intense Seq. of Sci-Fi Violenc|Intense Seq. of Sci-Fi Action) and stars Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America and Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter. What It's About... It is 1941 and the world is in the throes of war. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) wants to do his part and join America's armed forces, but the military rejects him because of his small stature. Finally, Steve gets his chance when he is accepted into an experimental program that turns him into a supersoldier called Capt. America. Joining forces with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), Capt. America leads the fight against the Nazi-backed HYDRA organization. What the Critics are Saying... This stylish superhero film is a departure from its predecessors - it's actually paced and designed for the non-"Transformers crowd." Asthmatic young Steve Rogers joins the war effort in 1942. He winds up in a secret government program that pumps him full of blue serum, the same being used by Hitler's maddest scientist played by Hugo Weaving. Weaving morphs into Red Skull as Evans becomes the beefed-up Captain America, waging high-flying battle high above the Atlantic. A unique superhero effort believe it or not. - AAA

Fright Night

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 Release Date: November 11th This Fantasy/Adventure is rated PG-13 (Frightening Images|Seq of Intense Action Violence) and stars Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter and Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley.

Release Date: December 6th This Drama is rated PG-13 (Thematic Material) and stars Viola Davis as Aibileen and Emma Stone as Skeeter.

What It's About... A clash between good and evil awaits as young Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) prepare for a final battle against Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). Harry has grown into a steely lad on a mission to rid the world of evil. The friends must search for the Horcruxes that keep the dastardly wizard immortal. Harry and Voldemort meet at Hogwarts Castle for an epic showdown where the forces of darkness may finally meet their match. What the Critics are Saying... In the new film, Harry is still hunting Horcruxes, which contain amounts of Voldemort's soul. The so-called Elder Wand, stolen from the crypt of Harry's mentor Dumbledore, must be put into the right hands. Snape has taken over Hogwarts and overseen its transformation to a regimented awful place. Smart yet not slavish direction, and the still-perfect casting from way back when, make this final chapter an entertaining and satisfying success. - AAAB

Kung Fu Panda 2

What It's About... In 1960s Mississippi, Southern society girl Skeeter (Emma Stone) returns from college with dreams of being a writer. She turns her small town on its ear by choosing to interview the black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent white families. Only Aibileen (Viola Davis), the housekeeper of Skeeter's best friend, will talk at first. But as the pair continue the collaboration, more women decide to come forward, and as it turns out, they have quite a lot to say. What the Critics are Saying... This film has Viola Davis going for it, and she is more than enough. In 1960s Jackson, Miss., young Miss Skeeter undertakes a clandestine book project gathering stories from the African-American housekeepers and child-raisers. Skeeter elicits counsel and stories from Aibileen and Minny while standing off against the despicable queen bee of privilege and prejudice, Hilly. The movie is a very pretty and somewhat generic thing visually, but Davis steals the show. - AAA

Thor

Release Date: December 13th This Comedy/Adventure is rated PG (Seq. of Martial Arts Action|Mild Violence) and stars Jack Black as Po and Angelina Jolie as Tigress.

Release Date: September 13th This Action/Fantasy is rated PG-13 (Intense Sci-Fi Action/Violence) and stars Chris Hemsworth as Dr. Donald Blake/Thor and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster.

What It's About... Now known as the Dragon Warrior, Po (Jack Black) protects the Valley of Peace alongside his friends and fellow kung fu masters, the Furious Five. However, a dangerous villain threatens Po's awesome new life with plans to use a secret weapon to wipe out the martial art and conquer China. In order to defeat the new enemy, Po finds he must recall his past and unlock secrets of his mysterious origins; only then will he find the strength to vanquish his foe. What the Critics are Saying... This follow-up delivers more heart than laughs. Cuddly Po is now an accomplished Dragon Warrior, meting out justice with his mad kung fu skillz. But there is a new threat, a peacock named Lord Shen who has a new weapon that could be the end of kung fu. While there aren't enough great lines for Black and the rest of the all-star voice cast, the chases are 3-D animated wonders, the martial arts brawls are epic and the scrip has an impressive heart with an appealing Buddhist bent. Highly satisfying. - AAA

Our Idiot Brother

What It's About... As the son of Odin (Anthony Hopkins), king of the Norse gods, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) will soon inherit the throne of Asgard from his aging father. However, on the day that he is to be crowned, Thor reacts with brutality when the gods' enemies, the Frost Giants, enter the palace in violation of their treaty. As punishment, Odin banishes Thor to Earth. While Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Thor's brother, plots mischief in Asgard, Thor, now stripped of his powers, faces his greatest threat. What the Critics are Saying... This Kenneth Branagh directed superhero flick is decently entertaining. On the planet Asgard, King Odin must choose an heir to the throne, either Thor, a hot-tempered pinup played by Chris Hemsworth, or his undermining brother Loki. When his bloodthirsty actions get him banished, Thor is whooshed to New Mexico into the laps of research team members played by Natalie Portman, Stellan Skarsgard and Kat Dennings. He's a space-Norse fish out of water, in need of a comeuppance before he can become a true hero.

Water for Elephants

Release Date: November 29th This Comedy is rated R (Sexual Content|Nudity|Language Throughout) and stars Paul Rudd as Ned and Elizabeth Banks as Miranda.

What It's About... Charley (Anton Yelchin) is a high-school senior who's in with the "in" crowd and dating Amy (Imogen Poots), the most sought-after gal on campus. But trouble enters his world in the form of Jerry Dandridge (Colin Farrell), a charismatic new neighbor. After witnessing some unusual activity next door, Charley concludes that Jerry is a vampire. Of course, no one believes him. After seeking advice from illusionist Peter Vincent (David Tennant), Charley sets out to destroy Jerry himself.

What It's About... Easygoing, dimwitted slacker Ned Rochlin (Paul Rudd) makes the biggest mistake of his so-far uninspired life when he sells some pot to a cop. Homeless and jobless upon his release from jail, Ned must prevail upon his three sisters (Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer) for help. Though Ned himself is utterly without a shred of ambition or guile, it's a different story with his sisters, who find their carefully ordered lives thrown into chaos whenever he's around.

What It's About... Jacob Jankowski (Robert Pattinson), a veterinary student, is close to graduating when a terrible tragedy forces him to leave school. With nowhere else to go, he hops on a passing train and finds it belongs to a traveling circus. Jacob takes a job as an animal caretaker and meets Marlena (Reese Witherspoon), a beautiful circus performer. Their shared compassion for a special elephant named Rosie leads to love, but August (Christoph Waltz), Marlena's cruel husband, stands in their way.

What the Critics are Saying... Paul Rudd carries this comedy in the role of Ned. Bearded, sporting Crocs and specializing in "farming," Ned has a penchant for causing inadvertent chaos. His three sisters balance out Ned's antics: Miranda, a weaselly magazine writer; Natalie, a bisexual artist's model; and Liz, a repressed wife married to a philandering filmmaker. Some of the comedy is routine, but in the world of over-the-top "Fockers" and "Hangovers," this small but satisfying film is a welcome release. - AAA

What the Critics are Saying... This film version of the best-selling novel set in Depression-era 1931 elevates pure corn to a completely satisfying realm of romantic melodrama. After a tragedy renders Jacob an orphan, he hops a freight train that winds up sweeping him up into the mad, mad world of the Benzini Bros. Circus. Jacob falls for the star of the show, Marlena, and has to deal with her sadistic ringleader husband played by Christoph Waltz who's so damned interesting to watch. A fine script, and corn that's satisfying to indulge. - AAB

The Help

Release Date: December 13th This Horror Film is rated R (Language|Bloody Horror Violence|Some Sexual References) and stars Anton Yelchin as Charley Brewster and Colin Farrell as Jerry Dandridge.

What the Critics are Saying... Plenty gory, but graced with humor, this remake of the 1985 cult classic actually works. In suburban Las Vegas, Charley doesn't like the vampirish looks of his new neighbor, Jerry, played by Colin Farrell, who you can tell relishes every rascally, bloodthirsty come-on. David Tennant renews the old Roddy McDowall role, this time a magician who has the tools to take on Jerry. The film is both funny and funny-scary, and has ways of catching you off-guard. This remake may be wholly unoriginal, but it's also almost wholly enjoyable. - AAA

58

What the Critics are Saying... The opening of this franchise "reboot" promises a gory delirium the film cannot sustain. Teenage girls at home by themselves on a dark night watch horror movies and get a phone call from the killer right outside. The film is jam-packed with stabbings, but the gore doesn't impart that salacious "Saw"/"Hostel" feeling. Neve Campbell returns as Sidney, a best-selling author returned home on the anniversary of the original Woodsboro killings. More killings ensue. All in all, it's a moderately entertaining exercise in running in circles and chasing one's tail. - AAB

Release Date: November 1st This Drama is rated PG-13 (Sexual Content|Moments of Intense Violence) and stars Reese Witherspoon as Marlena and Robert Pattinson as Jacob.
