Joseph: “The synopsis of ‘London Boulevard’ – the directorial debut of ‘The Departed’s’ screenwriter William Monahan – may sound simple and straight-forward enough at first glance. However, the deeper one travels down this street, a surplus of subplots emerge, convoluting what started out as a somewhat stimulating setup. Moreover, most of said subplots are unnecessary and lack resolution, suggesting that their inclusion was merely a means for Monahan to showcase his acclaimed dialogue. And everyone knows what happens when one sacrifices substance for style.” Grade: D

Horror: ‘Chillerama’
By Joseph J. Airdo
“Even ‘Hatchet,’ as much as that is like my first real movie, to me it was largely a comedy. Since then, I have sort have been this horror guy – which is great because I love the horror stuff and I am very proud to be that guy – but ‘The Diary of Anne Frankenstein’ is really the most straight-forward Mel Brooks type of comedy that I have done. I learned that I still have that [knack for comedy] and I equally love doing that. I learned that you are always trying not to be pigeon-holed but all you have got to do is do something else to not be pigeon-holed.” – Writer/Director Adam Green (‘Diary of Anne Frankenstein’)

The classic monsters were creatures that became monsters because they were denied acceptance. Horror fans accept everybody. I am happiest creatively and do my best work when I do not compromise for other people and when I stay true to my vision and not worry about what this person is going to say or that critic is going to say or whether Wal-Mart is going to stock my film and I just make something purely from my heart.” – Writer/Director Tim Sullivan (‘I Was a Teenage Werebear’)
Thriller: ‘The Debt’ By Stan Robinson “What attracted me to ‘The Debt’ is
that it’s a very, very compelling narrative that absolutely insist on being told as a thriller, but at its core its psychological, emotional, and moral complexity, which is totally bound up in the narrative itself. Often I think when you see a ‘genre thriller’, there’s a point where the thriller has to stop so we understand who the characters are and what’s going on with them. It’s very unusual to find a piece where those elements are woven so tightly together. If you’re going to have a film with the Holocaust as a background of the story, it imposes a very particular responsibility on the filmmaker, not to use that as a peg to hang an exciting story on, you have to take on those themes and deal with them very meticulously, and very honorably.” – Director John Madden

“[‘The Help’] is a movie with social relevance. The message is one that transcends age, race and gender. It is really about empowerment and finding your voice and having the courage to stand on principal. It is so easy to talk about ourselves as actors but the filmmaking process is one that is very involved and I feel that every department was represented beautifully in this movie – costumes, makeup, hair

It was certainly easier because I knew all the characters and they [voice actors] knew their characters so we could talk clearly about what each one was going through for each sequence. Talking to actors is the same as talking to any other artists, it’s getting into the moment for them, and making sure they can loose themselves in the performance! Fans enjoy such classic songs as “Dancing in the Streets,” “Tears of a Clown,” “Love Train” and “Let’s Get it On.” The Disco finale will include songs like Diana Ross’ hit “Love Hangover” and Thelma Houston’s “Don’t Leave Me This Way.” More than an impersonator show, Motown Memories captures the spirit and feeling evoked by a time when Detroit, a city once known for its cars, became a music capital.

DINE! VOYAGE FROM EGYPT TO THE SILK ROAD
Arizona Bellydancers Band Together To Help Women in War-Torn Nations Mijana Restaurant / Friday, December 16th at 7pm Three top Arizona raqs sharqi and folkloric dance troupes along with several acclaimed solo performers come together this holiday season to present “Voyage from Egypt to the Silk Road” -- an exciting array of folkloric and modern cultural dances from the Middle East and Central Asia, while raising money to assist women in war-torn nations to rebuild their lives. The event takes place Friday, Dec. 16th at 7 pm at Mijana Restaurant, 1290 N Scottsdale Rd, Tempe, 85281. The Silk Road is an extensive network of ancient trade routes 4,000 miles long and nearly 3,000 years old
-- extending from China and India, through Persia and Arabia, into northern Africa and Europe. Many of these trade routes are still in use today. The dances presented in this two-hour show will bring a taste of both ancient and modern culture from this area of the world to Valley performance arts enthusiasts. The $25 ticket price also includes dinner, with choice of Lebanese cuisine, including beef, chicken or lamb, rice and salad (vegetarian options also available). And 25% of all proceeds go to support Women For Women International (womenforwomen.org), a 501(c)3 organization that provides women in war-torn nations with financial and emotional aid, job skills training, rights education and small business assistance, so they can rebuild their lives. Featured performers include top Egyptian performance troupe, Shahrazad Dance Company of Phoenix (www.shahrazaddanceco.com); acclaimed Safar Dance Company from Tucson along with renowned soloist Gina Gonzalez Schanel; and Almagul Temirtekova of Kazakhstan, a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dance in New Delhi, India, who has performed for India’s Vice President, and brings a wealth of knowledge of central and east Asian dances, adding cultural elements to the event, seldom, if ever, seen in Arizona. For ticket information, contact shahrazadco@gmail. com or call 602-334-0245.

It takes two tries, but Lucas Neff nails a fly buzzing around the catering tent on a location shoot for the Tuesday Fox comedy “Raising Hope.” “Hey, watch this,” he says, smacking the fly down on the table cover. “Crushed.” But victory has a price. “Lost all the feeling in my hand.” But as Neff says about the fly, “This guy’s lost all the feeling in his everything.” The setting is an upscale development languishing in triple-digit heat in the San Fernando Valley. Under the tent where director/creator Greg Garcia sits, Neff pops in frequently to play with Bayley and Rylie Crecut, the twins playing the baby daughter of Neff ’s single father character, Jimmy Chance. On this day, a water pistol shooting rapid-fire bubbles was a big hit, but Neff has found other ways to amuse the twins. “They like hitting me in the face,” he says. “I was a human punching bag for a while. … We have different games. There’s no rules. I like to play Calvinball with the babies. It’s a great game. Google it.” To save you the trouble, it’s a game that evolved out of one of Neff ’s favorite things, the comic strip “Calvin & Hobbes.” “ ‘Raising Hope,’ to me, feels like the same sort of universe as ‘Calvin & Hobbes’ in a way,” he says. “There’s sweetness but also a sort of recklessness to it.” Jimmy’s parents (Martha Plimpton, Garret Dillahunt) had him as teenagers, and now young Jimmy is left raising his daughter alone after the mother – his one-night stand – winds up on death row. “That’s one of the great things about Jimmy,” says Neff. “At the end of the day, he doesn’t back down. I think he got that from his parents, too. They were faced with plenty of challenges in their lives, him being one of the prime examples.” December 8th, 2011 - December 14th, 2011

Ree Drummond’s life has been a series of happy accidents Ree Drummond – happy both for herself and for the millions of devoted fans who follow her every quip, confession and household tip on her award-winning website, thepioneerwoman.com, and now on her Food Network series, “Pioneer Woman.” It was the love of a studly blond cowboy Drummond’s fans know as “Marlboro Man” that morphed the former aspiring lawyer and pedicure fan into a “semiagoraphobic ranch wife” who has redefined the concept of “bloom (and rope and ride and garden) where you’re planted.” Feeding a farm full of cattlemen, four kids and whoever else wanders in was part of the deal the born-and-bred Oklahoman learned to love. “Before I was married, I had no experience feeding crowds of hungry people, let alone making sure the food was delicious,” Drummond says. “So in that respect, I’ve learned on the job. Feeding hungry kids, cowboys and in-laws is the best test kitchen there is.”

Blue Martini is not a place that I ever really cared to go to, but I am always interested in trying new places so, I went. I arrived for happy hour naturally and the atmosphere was really cool. The crowd is all ages, which is really nice for anyone. The happy hour is daily from 3pm-7pm with half off all of their martinis. LADIES; I suggest acquiring a VIP card so your first drink is free every time that you go. There is live music; which was awesome, along with three bars spread out throughout the building. The martinis can be pretty expensive but they are only around $6 during happy hour! I love a great dirty martini so I was sold. Also, if you work in the industry, and are a “In The Biz” card holder then you get complimentary cover for “SINDUSTRY MONDAYS” and awesome drink specials all night! 5455 E. High Street. “Find Your Go To” I used to work in Scottsdale Quarter, so I quickly became familiar with all the restaurants in there. Prime Bar became my “go to” spot. The restaurant is pretty dark, I like that a lot though. The bartenders do well with making good conversation and an awesome drink. During their happy hour you can try: $3 draft beers, $5 glass of wine, $6 specialty cocktails, and $5 select appetizers. For me; it is a toss up between their steak quesadilla, or delicious roasted red pepper hummus. I say get there a little earlier because this place does become packed. It is a lot of beautiful people in one place, and when has someone ever had a problem with that? Exactly! 15034 N. Scottsdale Rd. Scottsdale, AZ 85254 www. facebook.com/carrie.gurule

The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” Five years of Prohibition have had, at least, this one benign effect: they have completely disposed of all the favorite arguments of the Prohibitionists. None of the great boons and usufructs that were to follow the passage of the Eighteenth Amendment has come to pass. There is not less drunkenness in the Republic, but more. There is not less crime, but more. There is not less insanity, but more. The cost of government is not smaller, but vastly greater. Respect for law has not increased, but diminished.
let’s examine that time a little more closely.
Repeal Day January 16th, 1919 was the beginning of a dark period in American history that started with the ratification of the 18th Amendment and didn’t end for thirteen years with the ratification of the 21st Amendment on December 5th, 1933. This era became known as Prohibition and saw the outlawing of all alcoholic beverages in the United States. Since we just celebrated what has become known as Repeal Day,

The 18th Amendment is the only Constitutional Amendment to ever be repealed and it signified the end of what was called The Noble Experiment by supporters of Prohibition. In reality it was harmful to the country and served to provide numerous opportunities for organized crime to gain footholds as well as creating a general unhappiness with the Federal Government. The proponents of prohibition had believed that banning alcoholic beverages would reduce or even eliminate many social problems, particularly drunkenness, crime, mental illness, and poverty. In 1925, journalist H.L. Mencken believed the opposite to be true:

And while Prohibition may not have been responsible for The Great Depression, it certainly played its part in making the Depression worse. Between costs of enforcement and lost tax revenue it is estimated that Prohibition cost the country around a

billion dollars during the period from the late 1920’s until Repeal. Money that could have helped drastically with needed services during that time. The entire thirteen years of Prohibition cost the United States about $11,000,000,000 dollars in lost tax revenue and another $400,000,000 in enforcement costs. The chaos created by Prohibition and the overwhelming desire of the American public to consume adult beverages made the time ripe for the incredible growth of organized crime. Serving as retail distribution channels and, in many cases production as well, cities were almost taken over by organized crime groups. But it was not all the mob’s doing, most of the production and trafficking was still done by ordinary citizens looking to make money and provide a service for their fellow Americans. Much of it was also done by Canadian interests. Continued on Page 38...

... continued from Page 36. Production of spirits, wine and beer was still legal in Canada and a quick bootlegging run across the border could net these companies a nice profit. Prohibition brought us many terms used today. For instance, the term speakeasy is said to come from bartenders telling patrons to “speak easy” when ordering so as not to be overheard some 30 years before prohibition. While the speakeasy was often funded by organized crime and could be very elaborate and upscale, the “blind pig” was a dive for the less desirable drinker. It should be noted that one of Russian River Brewing’s flagship brands is Blind Pig IPA. The term “The Real McCoy” also came out of this era. It’s attributed to Captain William S. McCoy who facilitated most of the rum running via ships during prohibition and would never water down his imports, making his the “real” thing.

When it became evident that Prohibition had failed, as many movements that ignore the will of the people do, a politician named Franklin D. Roosevelt ran for president on a platform that included the repeal of the 18th Amendment. Soon-to-be President Roosevelt also had a plan to get us out of The Depression and was easily elected. His “New Deal” became a major turning point for the United States. On December 5th, 1933 the 21st Amendment was accepted by the state of Utah, a state not normally thought of as being particularly supportive of alcohol, and with that vote the required 75% of states required for ratification was reached and the Amendment became law. However prior to that the CullenHarrison act was signed into law by President Roosevelt. This act allowed for production and sale of beer of no more than 3.2% alcohol by weight (4.0% if using the more common alcohol by volume measurement) and beer returned to the country in April of 1933. Interesting fact... The first legal bottle of beer produced by Washington’s Abner Drury Brewery was delivered to President Roosevelt

at the White House shortly after midnight on April 14, 1933 and stored in the President’s pantry because he was still asleep. Here are some other interesting facts about Prohibition and its repeal. Dewar’s Scotch - the first legal whisky to arrive in the U.S. - hit New York’s South Street Seaport docks the moment the law was put into action. Joseph Kennedy, Sr. (JFK’s father) happened to be the US agent for the brand. Now, a lot of people have suggested that Joseph Kennedy was a bootlegger, which he may or may not have been. But what he really was, was the owner of a company named Somerset Importers. Somerset owned the exclusive rights to import Dewar’s Scotch and Gordon’s Gin, and right before Repeal, Somerset stocked up. Once Prohibition was over, they sold the premium liquors for a hefty profit, and Joe was a rich man. The umbrella becomes a clever symbol of the post-prohibition era. Ironically with rain inside the umbrella for many wet days to come. To honor the repeal of the 21st amendment many celebration begin at 9:00pm or the 21st hour. Finally, many Repeal Day hosts insist the first drink of the evening be non-alcoholic beverage to remind everyone of the dry days of prohibition. So, this story may have hit your hands a little late for this year, but next year will be coming up soon, so take a few minutes to remember that the repeal of Prohibition was one of the best examples of the system that is the government of The United States of America working properly and protecting the constitutional rights of the citizens. Host your own party next year, or better yet, it’s not too late to toast the repeal this year.

VICTORY AT SEA IMPERIAL PORTER
Hello again beer lovers, isn’t it brisk outside this week? Today let’s chat about a beer very dear to my heart and perfect for such chilly weather, Victory at Sea Imperial Porter from Ballast Point Brewing. Located in San Diego California, Ballast Point Brewing has been in operation since 1996 and is well known for their famous SCULPIN IPA. Scoring a perfect 100 on Ratebeer.com, Sculpin has become a highly sought after IPA and quite popular here in Arizona. Victory at Sea Imperial Porter continues this tradition of quality and popularity in also scoring a perfect 100 on ratebeer.com. Pouring jet black with a creamy tan head, the first thing you’ll notice is a beautifully malty sweet coffee nose. Imagine the smell of your favorite piping hot latte then throw in a small measure of chocolate for good measure. The flavours in the nose follow through on the palate and continue to grow with hints of vanilla and more than a touch of bitterness for balance. Full bodied and strong this complex brew comes in at 10% ABV. Although your palate will certainly detect the alcohol, it is by no means out of balance or offensive as this is after all an Imperial Porter. Pairing recommendations include Dark Chocolate Everything, a T-bone steak grilled with Garlic butter and bacon fat served w/ a baked potato or even something as delicate as flan with a raisin and rum sauce. Great Alcohol pairings should include a vodka mudslide shaken and strained or a good cold shot of Jagermeister. Anyone up for Happy Hour?
Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeverages.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com
I would be remise to mention that this beer comes to Arizona in Very Limited Quantities and should be sought after ASAP if one hopes to find it. Count on Tops Liquor, Whole Foods Market Chandler, AZ Wine and other fine liquor stores to get a case or three. As always, keep tuning in and sending those questions and comments to kingjamesswann@gmail.com. I love to hear your ideas and opinions. Until next week, CHEERS!

Barley Wine Season Comes Early in Alaska this Year 2011 Alaskan Barley Wine Release December 1st Alaskan Brewing Co’s limited release Barley Wine is returning a month early for craft beer fans to celebrate the holidays in Alaskan style. A big beer for big Alaska winters, this awardwinning brew releases December 1 and is ideal for sharing with friends during the coldest season. But while some like it fresh, the bottling of each vintage of Alaskan Barley Wine also allows individuals to age it to their liking. It is an ideal cellaring beer to collect for vertical tastings as it gains deeper malt complexity, smoothness and more dark fruit flavors over time. The balanced collaboration between hops, malt and alcohol in this beer highlights the American barley wine style, earning Alaskan Barley Wine

top honors at the West Coast’s premier Barley Wine competitions – Toronado (2007) and Hard Liver (2009) - and Bronze at the 2008 and 2010 World Beer Cup for both fresh and aged vintages. The 2011 vintage of Alaskan Barley Wine will be available in December in select retail locations throughout the 12 states where Alaskan Beer is sold, including Alaskan’s newest markets, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Those who live outside these areas can learn about where to find it online at www. alaskanbeer.com/our-brew/find-ourbeer.html.

BASICS BEFORE YOUR BIG JUMP
Bungee Jumping has become so popular around the world that it’s debatable if it is even considered terribly extreme anymore (afterall, driving here in the valley is practically an extreme sport in itself nowadays). However, considering that most people are made to fall rather than fly, 4:15 PM you could be taking your life into your hands if you elect to seek the thrill of bungee jumping. Whether you’re diving from a platform, a precipice, or a bridge over troubled water, you need to be aware of the dangers involved in this extreme sport and understand the safety measures that are available to anyone who chooses to undertake such a venture. So here are a few tips that will help you prepare for your bungee adventure, or decide if it’s even right for you.
1. Know potential dangers. It’s pretty rare these days to hear about bungee lines snapping, harnesses being improperly connected, or jumpers hitting stationary objects, but these things do happen occasionally. It pays to be aware of the hazards involved in any sport before you make the leap (so to speak). 2. Exercise due diligence. Choosing the right site for a jump could make December 8th, 2011 - December 14th, 2011

a big difference in the outcome, so don’t just try a place because you saw their commercial on TV. There are many notable locations throughout the world that offer spectacular views, superior equipment, and a reputation for safety. And while some will allow you to leap off the side of a dam with nothing but rocky terrain waiting below, others have additional measures in place to ensure your continued health and well being (like nets or airbags under the platform). You’ll just have to choose your level of risk. 3. Consider your limitations. If you have certain physical limitations that may inhibit you from bungee jumping, then you should make every effort to find out the risks involved. You should avoid this and other extreme
4. Dress the part. It is recommended that you wear fitted clothing (since loose items can tangle with the line) and eschew any extraneous accessories (glasses, hats, jewelry)
that could fall off or cause injury during your jump. Shoes should be of the difficult-to-dislodge variety (flip flops are a no-no). 5. Learn about safety. Most people are perfectly willing to allow someone else to fasten their harness, tie their cables, strap on their helmet, and shove them off a very tall structure. And while it is certainly a good idea to have a professional handy when
you’re about to jump off a cliff, most facilities endeavor to give bungee enthusiasts a hand in their own welfare by mandating a safety class before a jump. While the length and content of these sessions may vary from place to place, almost all of them include instruction on the proper
usage of equipment (allowing users to take control of their own bodily safety), possible dangers involved in the jump, and what to do in case of equipment malfunction. However, their main emphasis is on prevention, and two sets of eyes on your safety are always better than one.

Dave’s Electric Brewpub
The Fantasy of Lights Boat Parade is this Saturday on Tempe Town Lake and if you remember how chilly it was last weekend, you may get cold feet and not go. It is almost Christmas, though and if you’re like me and don’t get your dose of Holiday cheer, you’ll become a grumpy panda and think Christmas was ehhh this year. So double up your socks if you need to and enjoy the festivities. Afterwards (and maybe even before), check out Dave’s Electric Brewpub on Stadium Drive and College near Mill for a taste of Arizona’s first microbrews. The original Dave’s is down in Bisbee where it opened 22 years ago when microbreweries were legalized in Arizona. With so much history in the place, expect some good beer to help warm you up. Check back in on Wednesdays (7-9) for their Jamn Jazz sessions. This week The Beth Lederman Trio featuring vocalist Diana Lee will be performing.502 S. The weather outside is frightful and our desert skin goes into shock whenever the outside temperature drops below 60. For us who wear cocktail dresses and heels when we go out on the town, this is very bad news, indeed. Yeah, staying in, wearing fuzzy socks, and watching a movie all under a heavy throw blanket, is an alternative—a boring one. Although that fire sure is delightful, we cannot become a hibernating species during the winter months. Becoming such, means a higher probability of adding a few more extra pounds to your already increasing holiday weight. I say boo to that and encourage all to make their way down to the fancy bowling atmosphere that is Lucky Strike Phoenix. On Fridays and Saturdays after 9:30 enjoy some bowldancing action as VJs Astonish, Decipha, and PCraze mix and show the videos to
This year I’m trying not to be cheap with my Christmas presents. I will, however, be cheap with my drinks. Instead of spending money on beverages in Scottsdale, try hitting up the neighborhood dive bars and maybe even this downtown Phoenix Irish Pub with your buddies this season. The holidays are a time for getting together with friends and family and what better place to do that than in an Irish pub? Feel free to get as loud as you want, too. Seating is usually available and the food is pretty good for a bar. If you’re a whiskey connoseur, then you should already know about this pub as it carries one of the most extensive Irish whiskey collections in Arizona. McCaffrey’s has about 10 draft beers available in imperial pints so you get 20% more ale than an American pint to help aid your wintertime shenanigans. Open daily from 10 am – 2 pm. 18 W. Monroe.
