Reviewers’ Roundtable The following quotes were pulled from AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists’ full reviews in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of each of this weekend’s new releases. ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked’*

Stan Robinson, ScreenScene.org

Randy Montgomery, AZ Weekly Film Critic

Listen to Joseph J. Airdo’s “Movie Maverick” radio segment, every Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. during “The Daily Blender with Jeffry O’Brien” on KBSZ - NBC 1260 AM and 96.1 FM

The Chipmunks (Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler and Jesse McCartney) and the Chipettes (Anna Faris, Christina Applegate and Amy Poehler) become marooned on a notso-deserted island. (G – 87 minutes) *Screened after deadline.

Stan Robinson, 65, is a retired first assistant director with more than 22 years of experience in film and media production. Read his full features and reviews exclusively online at ScreenScene.org.

Joseph J. Airdo, 27, is a Walter Cronkite School of Journalism graduate with a bachelor’s degree in media analysis and criticism. Read his full features and reviews exclusively online at Examiner.com/Phoenix.

‘Shame’ The arrival of his needy sister (Carey Mulligan) forces a man (Michael Fassbender) to confront his sex addiction out in the open. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (NC-17 – 99 minutes)

About the Film Columnists

Randy Montgomery, 34, works in media and marketing and holds a master’s degree in counseling and education. Read his full features and reviews exclusively online at AZWeeklyMagazine.com.

Joseph: “Writer/director José Padilha’s ‘Elite Squad: The Enemy Within’ is a rare motion picture that balances intensity with intelligence. A follow-up to the filmmaker’s 2008 effort, the gritty crime thriller about corrupt cops and emotionally charged politics is a raw representation, to say the least – perhaps too much so for some. However, in the midst of all of the blood, sweat and tears, the movie also opens its viewers’ eyes and asks them some quite complicated questions, thereby engaging them on a cerebral level as much as it entertains them on a mind-numbingly violent one.” Grade: C

‘Elite Squad: The Enemy Within’ The captain (Wagner Moura) of a special Brazilian police force considers which of two new recruits (André Ramiro and Caio Junqueira) would make a suitable successor. In Portuguese with English subtitles. Playing exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. (R – 114 minutes)

Stan: “A subject often explored throughout cinema history with various levels of treatment from the ultra conservative to the ‘Avant guard’ approach, the ‘buzz’ of the NC-17 rating prompt’s the curiosity aspect for most. While writer/director Steve McQueen presents a visually erotic portrait of sensuality, ‘Shame’ doesn’t break new ground in cerebral perspectives and becomes more of a reaffirming exercise than a revelation of one of the oldest recorded aspects of human kind, the pursuit of sex without emotional attachment.” Grade: C Joseph: “With all of the buzz about ‘Shame’s’ NC-17 rating, one does not know whether to be more disappointed in the fact that there is really nothing titillating enough in the movie to warrant such controversy or the fact that the film is actually quite boring. That is not to say that writer/ director Steve McQueen’s character study is irrelevant, though, as his

project perfectly personifies how our desire to develop intimate connections often clashes with our otherwise caveman-like cravings. However, said clash is represented with such an overly artistic style and passionless pace that the viewer must resort to deviant fantasies of their own in order to make it all the way through to the end-credits.” Grade: D Randy: “There has been quite a bit of buzz surrounding this film because of subject matter, the amount of nudity and graphic sexual content. Maybe that buzz is what left me unimpressed. While Fassbender and Mulligan turn in stellar performances, the overall product failed to win my attention. The actors are deserving of recognition for the tough material, but I’m not sure that’s enough to garner any nominations. Grade: C+.

‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows’* The murder of Austria’s crown prince leads Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.), Watson (Jude Law) and a Gypsy (Noomi Rapace) to a showdown with an evil genius named Moriarty (Jared Harris). (PG-13 – 129 minutes) *Screened after deadline.

A writer (Charlize Theron) unexpectedly bonds with a former classmate (Patton Oswalt) after she returns home to relive her glory days and steal her now-married high-school sweetheart (Patrick Wilson). (R – 94 minutes) Stan: “Charlize Theron’s portrayal of the central character starts as the usual devil may care ‘laissezfaire’ pacing of light comedy, quietly reveals the tell-tale signs of a person with serious emotional damage who escapes into her fantasy world believing it’s the reality she’s living, ‘Young Adult’ steadily escalates to a dark comedy on the surface as director Jason Reitman reveals the psychological depth of multiple issues of a troubled mind, the impact on those

in her orbit as we witness a nervous breakdown right before our eyes, while laughter turns to empathy for a person who needs help…” Grade: B Joseph: “Sulking from scene to scene with minimal music and an acrimonious attitude, ‘Young Adult’ is unlike any other movie you have seen. In fact, it even drastically differs from writer Diablo Cody and director Jason Reitman’s previous collaboration ‘Juno’ in the way that its sarcasm is less quirky than it is parched as the style succumbs to all of the selfloathing being done by its primary character. Speaking of which, actress Charlize Theron gives the best performance of the year as said character, carrying the dark comedy in which she plays a painfully pathetic person whose every action is as side-splitting as it is gut-wrenching.” Grade: B

Randy: “Charlize Theron has tackled much more difficult roles dramatically, but this comedy really demonstrates her talent as an actor. A role so strong, she landed on my “Top 5” list for best performances by an actress this year. The movie itself is well written and filled with awkward moments as Theron’s character continues to embarrass herself chasing an old flame. Filled with laughs, this is by far one of the funniest movies of the year.” Grade: A

Bet You Didn’t Know! by Stan Robinson

Soundbite Spotlight The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters. Halle Berry is the first black woman to win a best actress Oscar® for her starring role in ‘Monster’s Ball’ in 2001. Michael Farr, a British expert on the comic series Tintin and its creator Hergé, has written several books about the comics on which the film is based. “I was delighted because I’m the biographer of Hergé. When I was researching, I found among his papers a note which he had written dated January 1983, and this note said ‘If there is one person who can bring Tintin successfully to the screen, its this young American director’. Now he didn’t name Spielberg, but we know its Steven Spielberg because in his diary he [Hergé] was due to meet him [Spielberg] at the end of March 1983.

Temtchine plays an amnesiac woman who wanders around to various Hollywood landmarks after awakening on the sidewalk in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. Phoenix native Travis Rust served as the film’s editor. “First off, editing is essentially storytelling. As an editor, the director and I choose the preferred performances and angles that have been shot on the set. Then I build the scenes based on the script and the director’s intent. But that is such a simplified way of stating what I do on a film.

John Wayne, who starred in 142 of his 153 films, had more leading roles than any other actor. and it was agreed that Spielberg would come over himself in March of 83’ to meet Hergé and finalize things. Unfortunately Hergé died on March the third of that month and the meeting never happened but Steven Spielberg did actually manage to buy the rights for the first time later that year in 83’. That showed to me was that Hergé [Tintin creator] who I knew, and who I also knew was a huge cinema buff, he loved the cinema from his childhood, and the first Spielberg film he saw was a film called ‘Jewels’ and he [Hergé] was riveted by it and he said to his wife, ‘I want to see all the films this director makes’ and he did! It is wonderful that two mutual admirers should have this result finally by Spielberg, who admired Tintin, and by a director that I know that Hergé admired very much.” – Michael Farr

Editor Travis Rust (‘Footprints’)

“I like to use an analogy of composing music. All the footage that has been shot are like musical notes. The shots can be composed to have different rhythms and tones. Yet, I could have beautiful shots and performances and if they are edited in the wrong order or with the wrong pace then the composition doesn’t come together. “The reasons I enjoy the editing process so much are the storytelling aspects and the puzzle-solving elements. Building each scene in a film is like a storytelling puzzle. I am trying to tell the story effectively and efficiently using different actors’ performances, camera angles and sometimes effects (slow motion, visual treatments, etc.). “Inevitably, although a film was shot according to a shoot-ready script, certain story arcs or actors performances don’t translate on the screen once the film has been edited into a rough cut. I work in tandem with the director to fine-tune the story to resolve these problems and improve on what is working.” – Travis Rust

“Little Deaths” is a psycho-sexual horror anthology with three narratively unrelated but thematically linked vignettes. Writer/director Simon Rumley’s vignette is about two Londoners who are united in the co-dependent but weird canine related sado-masochistic games they play.

In “Tanner Hall,” Rooney Mara plays Fernanda, a teenager whose manipulative childhood acquaintance (Georgia King) worms her way into her circle of friends at an all-girls boarding school. Mara also stars as Lisbeth in “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” which opens Dec. 21 in theaters throughout the Valley.

“This was a story that I had conceived back when I was 19 at university. I was in bed with my girlfriend at the time, who was naked. A spider fell on her and she completely freaked out. I started writing a short story about a younger Gothic couple that was in an abusive relationship and the guy gets back at the girl by tying her up and pouring lots of spiders on her. I always had it in the back of my mind to finish it one day and, when this opportunity came along, I changed the spiders to dogs – which I thought would be visually more climactic.” – Simon Rumley

“Honestly, we cannot say enough good things about Rooney. She completely transforms. She really becomes that character that she is playing. It was like the style that Fernanda took on became her style in life. Then ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ happened and now it is like Fernanda’s style has gone out the window. For better or for worse, Lisbeth’s style is how she dresses and how her house looks. Rooney really takes that on via very internal, psychic and physical levels.” – Francesca Gregorini “She is not overt in any way. It is almost like she is being a conduit internally and then you can see it back in her. It is very still and it is

The Spotted Donkey CantinaHayden Village, on the “Via de Ventura Corridor” in Scottsdale, has been recognized in the valley for its Mexican and Southwest cuisine. Make Your Holidays Sparkle with Fleming’s Champagne Cocktail –

THE SPARKLING STAR December 1 – 31, 2011

Join Fleming’s in December and raise a holiday toast to friends, family and memorable times. Nothing says “Happy Holidays” like a festive Champagne cocktail. Fleming’s Director of Wine, Maeve Pesquera has created the Sparkling Star cocktail – a simple and elegant toast to this festive season. Sparkling Star ½ oz Cointreau 1 ½ oz POM Wonderful pomegranate juice (chilled) top with Chandon étoile Brut, icy cold Curly long lime twist. In a chilled flute glass, combine the orange liqueur and the chilled pomegranate juice and top with étoile Brut. Maeve’s Tips: Brut, a very dry, fruity version that is simply divine. Champagne, or any sparkling wine, should be served icy cold, so if you’re serving Champagne at home, keep it refridgerated for at least four to five hours before serving. Once opened, keep it in a bucket of ice until the last delicious drop is gone. Please visit www. FlemingsSteakhouse.com to find your closest restaurant and hours.

Cornish Pasty Co. You know what they call a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris? They call it a “Royale with Cheese.” I don’t know about France… but I do know that at the Cornish Pasty Company in Tempe and Mesa, a Royale with Cheese is pure, unadulterated, meaty, cheesy deliciousness, baked in a pastry. Wash it down with a Kiltlifter and you’ve got a square meal. Great food, great local crowd, hipster decor and of course, the jukebox. If you’re up for the chill in the air, the patio in Mesa gives a great view of life going by. This time of year we hide under bulky sweaters anyhow, why not live it up while we can and indulge? Food Network fans know Justin Willman as the Alton Brown or Ted Allen of the Sunday night hit “Cupcake Wars,” which launched myriad other homages to the little cakes with the great, big trend factor. He doesn’t taste the wares or choose the winners, but Willman keeps the mood whipped-frosting fun and breaks bad news to losers as sweetly as he can. Still, if he had his druthers, he might just make ’em disappear. “I’ve been doing magic since I was 12 and touring since I was in college,” he says. “For the past eight years I’ve been on the road doing 200-plus shows a year. It’s really my passion and what I love.” So how did the former Campus Activities Magazine Entertainer of the Year become Food’s king of the cupcake competition? Credit friend and former employer Rachael Ray, who brought Willman aboard her eponymous, food-centric daily as a comic sidekick. “When the cupcake show came around, I auditioned as host, but if you’re going to be on the Food Network, you have to have some sort of food credibility,” he says. “Thank God for Rachael Ray! She was my in.”

BETWEEN OUR LIQUID ENVIRONMENT AND THE DIM LIGHTING, SOMEONE’S BOUND TO FIND YOU ATTRACTIVE.

My mom actually introduced me to Eli’s American grill. The bar is centrally located, and they have live music for entertainment. I love finding places that have happy hour every day, as Eli’s does from 11am-7pm. Well drinks are $4, premium drinks are $6, domestics and premium beers are under $4. As for making your belly happy, they have: baby back ribs for $11, Jose’s famous fish tacos for $8 and potato skins with cheese and bacon for $7. Gregory; the boss, is amazing! He makes awesome drinks and will keep you laughing all night! 7000 E. Shea Blvd. #140, Scottsdale, AZ 85254

“Dance on bar at your own risk” Recently, I just moved next to Desert Ridge, and everything’s conveniently located. San Felipes is a small spot, but I’ve become so fond of the staff. They have happy hour every single day from 4-7pm; gotta love that, it can be hard to find places that offer that every day. Half off appetizers and drinks always sounds good to all. I love their seafood tacos for six bucks. Just a little tip; if you work in the industry, bring your pay stub, and get 50% off your tab anytime!! I love that deal, I can go out during happy hour for ten dollars! This location isn’t as big as the others, but don’t be fooled, you’ll have a blast. 21001 North Tatum Blvd. Phoenix, AZ 85050

BEER! HOLIDAY BEER TO SPREAD PLENTY OF CHEER The holiday season is here, so what better time to look at some of the top holiday beers available in Arizona? Let’s get right to it. Breckenridge Christmas Ale The chill of a Colorado highcountry winter calls for a beer with extra flavor and strength. Here it is. At over 7% alcohol, with a sturdy texture and rich flavors of caramel and chocolate, this holiday

ODP CH AN WOK

Powder Hound is Big Sky’s Winter Ale, and since it is their creation they get to name it. So Big Sky defines this style as a Northern Rockies Strong Ale. Powder Hound satisfies, with the fine hand selected British hops fully complimenting the smooth malt notes. After a day on the ice or in the snow, or even sitting around in shorts and a T-shirt, you can enjoy a Powder Hound Winter Ale.

The spices and hops balance the sweetness of the honey and malt to give this lightly hopped beer its perfect flavor. Hello again craft beer geeks; today let’s chat about Frambozen from New Belgium Brewing in Fort Collins Colorado. Frambozen is a raspberry brown ale usually released right around Thanksgiving and for me always signals the beginning of the holiday season. With aromas of fresh red raspberries, followed by the ripe seductiveness of a fruity brown ale, this little brew feels right at home in the winter months with depth and delicate malty notes. It pours a deep rubycolor, with a huge berry flavours on the nose that follow through on the palate with a brilliant malty texture and just a touch of hop bitterness for balance. What I like about this brew is the tart characteristic that balances the sweet essence. Normally this beer style tends to be overly sweet but this little brew balances those qualities rather nicely.

BEER! SECTION

In a Winter Wonderland with Frambozen

At 6.5% ABV. the warming content needed from a winter release is here as well. Again balance is key - and although there is enough alcohol to take you to your Funky Winter Wonderland, the flavour of the beer doesn’t suffer for it. That’s Boogie Wonderland for me; just add a six pack quality craft brew and I’m there! Great Food pairings include almost any poultry dish from duck to chicken although I would stay away from recipes with too much black pepper. Great desert pairings you ask? The sky is the limit here, but stay away from dishes with too much tart character as this beer has that ground covered. The perfect Booze pairing should be and Oatmeal Cookie shot or a small snifter full of baileys. INDEED!!!

As always stay warm, keep safe and don’t stop sending those comments and questions to kingjamesswann@gmail. comIt’s a bit rainy outside as I write this and my trusty cat Klaus is curled up next to me purring away. All I need is a Frambozen and life is perfect. Until next week, Cheers! December 15th, 2011 - December 21st, 2011

foundation that is accented by a melody of fresh Holiday spices including ginger, cardamom, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and black pepper. Keeping the Holidaze Merry and Bright! SanTan also brews their extremely difficult to find (but worth it) Winter Warmer. This beer defies description. Rich and complex with great flavors throughout it goes great with the recommended serving of gingerbread cookies. Look for both on draft only. Thunder Canyon Ornament Ale Another tough to find, but worth it, draft only beer. Spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves and a special secret spice ingredient. This subtle blend of spices adds to the flavor of the malt and hops to create a unique and delicious holiday treat. He’BrewJewbelation For those of you who celebrate Chanukah, or just want to celebrate with a good beer,

the folks at Shmaltz make this certified kosher treat. This celebration of their 15th year of brewing great beer starts out with a rich aroma of dark brown molasses, burnt prunes and caramel. The flavor merges into chocolate, brandy and a little bit of licorice providing an overall flavor that defies you to find the 15% ABV in the beer Ridgeway Bad Elf A fine beer from the fun people at Ridgeway in England, but the real fun is having the complete collection of Elves ready for your holiday guests. Set it up with Bad Elf, Very Bad Elf, Seriously Bad Elf, Criminally Bad Elf, and finally, Insanely Bad Elf. If that isn’t enough throw in Santa’s Butt Holiday Porter, Warm Welcome Brown Ale and Lump of Coal Stout for the complete beer package. So there you have a brief rundown of some of the holiday beers available this season. These beers don’t typically last much past New Year’s so go pick them up and have them on your holiday table. I will.

Red Solo Cup Thursdays at Cadillac Ranch

I enjoy my Scottsdale nights for various reasons—dancing, club/bar hopping, getting pretty in a cocktail dress and sometimes painful dancing shoes, but sometimes getting in that Scottsdale-fancy mindset takes a lot of energy especially on a weeknight. In my college days, filling a plastic red cup with liquid happiness was satisfying enough. Thankfully, Cadillac Ranch has decided to embrace the fun times that can be had without martini glasses and dress code violations with their Red Solo Cup Thursday specials. Those looking for dancing and getting smashed can now go as far as Tempe where you can relive your college house party days and purchase a red cup for $5 and continuously get it filled with tasty beverage throughout the night for cheap. From 9 to 2, indulge in $1 domestic drafts, $2 wells, $3 long islands, and $4 flavored vodka and Jaeger bombs. Yeehaw! Don’t forget to ride the mechanical bull while you’re there. Third Thursday Holiday Concert on Mill

Are you broke until Friday and still need some holiday cheer to remind you that it’s Christmas time? Don’t worry, me too and that’s why all us broke folk should head down to Mill and stand under that big 50 foot Christmas tree as we listen to locals sing their hearts out. They’re doing it to spread holiday spirit and even more so to promote Alice Cooper’s annual Christmas Pudding show happening this Saturday. Finalists from Cooper’s “Proof is in the Pudding” competition will perform this Thursday at Centerpoint on Mill. Other activities include spotting Cowboy Santa (that’s interesting, I guess…) and a social media scavenger hunt that involves prizes—free stuff is always good. So get jolly at happy hour to warm you up and head down for some Christmas music because I know you like it just like everyone else.

Rock n Roll Extravaganza Tour at O’Donoghue’s

If you feel like having a casual dinner and show experience this weekend, check out local band, Screaming Ants at Scottsdale’s neighborhood Irish pub, O’Donoghue’s this Saturday for some excellent cover jams, good beer, and pub food. The Screaming Ants will be sure to cover your favorite songs from Pat Benatar, Thin Lizzy, and even Lady Gaga along with other great songs popular over the last 40 years. Irish pubs always seem to make me feel warm inside and out—and that’s important during the colder months of the year. Maybe it’s the association with cold, rainy UK weather or the heavy beers served that’s makes me feel that way--I’m not sure but I’m pretty sure that even if you’re not a huge fan of Gaga, you’ll be able to stand hearing a cover band’s version of Just Dance after a few Guinesses. Or not. Either way, have a chill evening with your buddies and sing along to the rock hits you grew up with. Cheers! Saturday, December 17th. 8 pm. 20469 N Hayden Rd, Scottsdale.

GET GNARLY, AWESOME AND TOTALLY RAD… RIGHT IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD! Most of us who grew up in the ‘70s and ‘80s have to admit that at one point, we were like, totally into the rad world of skateboarding and BMX bikes. And quite a few of you probably have fond memories of setting up your own little backyard ramps using nothing but a couple of 4:15 PM cinderblocks and a piece of plywood. But nowadays, with hardware stores like Home Depot in every town, it’s a lot easier to build amazing amateur (or even close to pro) ramps, right in your own backyard. And here’s how to start. 1. Ask permission. If you are currently under the age of 18 and/or still living at home with your parents, try to refrain from building a giant permanent structure on a piece of property that doesn’t belong to you, at least not without asking first. The phrase “it’s better to beg forgiveness than ask permission” applies to staying out past your curfew, blowing your summer savings on an iPad, and ditching class. It does not apply to expensive and hard-to-remove eyesores that get you grounded for a month. If, on the other hand, you have your own home, good for you! Despite the fact that you are A) independently wealthy or B) working for a living, you haven’t let your love of BMX fall to the tide of people who keep telling you to grow up!

2. Get blueprints. Chances are good that you’ve never even assembled a desk from IKEA, much less a structure that requires definite knowledge of carpentry. So consider deferring to the pros. You can find specs, videos, and all kinds of useful hints and tutorials online to help you choose a ramp that fits your space and your skill level. Frank Lloyd Wright you are not, so if you want a ramp that won’t buckle the first time it feels the weight of your bike, you should definitely follow some instructions. 3. Hit the hardware store. You will need a lot of bits and pieces to make your dream ramp into a reality. And the expenses could rack up pretty quick. If you’re on a budget, see about getting some remnants that might suit your purposes (leftover bits of wood from cuts done for other customers…they’re usually discounted significantly). And if you don’t want to buy a bunch of tools, simply ask them to cut the wood for you so all you have to worry about is drilling and hammering. 4. Get a little help. Your friends are no doubt chomping at the bit to zoom up your ramp on their BMX bikes, so enlist their aid in getting the job done. You generally start by building a platform (or several) that the ramps lead up to. Then you will want to put in a series of support beams that will hold the ramps and keep them from collapsing. Finally, add curved plywood over the frame to finish it off. 5. Have fun! Before you go all gung

ho with the tricks, test the weight limit of your ramp by throwing on progressive increments of weight (sandbags work pretty well – you could also try rolling a vehicle up onto it, but if it collapses, you might damage your car). Once you know the

ramp can withstand several hundred pounds of weight, it should be safe to try it out. Just remember your standard safety equipment (a helmet, at the very least) and you’re ready for some high-flying BMX action. Gnarly, dude!

BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW

At the first World Cup championship in Uruguay, 1930, the soccer balls were actually monkey skulls wrapped in paper and leather.

SO…WHAT IS NEWS & WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER NEWS WORTHY

* July 16, 1969: Apollo 11, the first manned space mission to land on the moon, launches from the Kennedy Space Center. July 11, 1972: The first World Chess Championship game between Bobby Fischer and defending champion Boris Spassky starts. * July 13, 1977: The New York City blackout of 1977 leads to wide-spread looting. * July 12, 1984: Democratic presidential candidate Walter F. Mondale names Congresswoman Geraldine A. Ferraro as his running mate. Ferraro becomes the first female Vice Presidential candidate on a major party ticket. * July 15, 1996: MSNBC debuts on cable TV and online. * July 10, 1999: The U.S. women’s soccer team wins the FIFA Women’s World Cup against China in Pasadena, California. * July 12, 2005: Prince Albert II of Monaco accedes to the throne. & ON

* July 16, 2004: Martha Stewart is sentenced to five months in prison (and five months of house arrest) for a stock sale. According to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Stewart avoided a loss of $45,673 by selling all 3,928 shares of her ImClone Systems stock on December 27, 2001, after receiving material, nonpublic information from Peter Bacanovic, who was Stewart’s broker at Merrill Lynch. Martha Helen Stewart (née Kostyra), is an American business magnate, media personality, author, and magazine publisher and founder of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. She has gained success through her intelligence, perseverance, simply put; her pure resolve to bring to fruition her visions. On the cover of the May 1995 issue, New York Magazine declared her as “the definitive American woman of our time”.

Although the media widely speculated that the situation would effectively be the end of her media empire, Stewart began a comeback campaign in 2005, with her company returning to profitability the following year.

There have been four documented cases of humans who have hibernated through an entire winter.

The average human speaks 4,800 words in 24 hours.

A Tokyo inventor has developed a laptop computer whose battery is recharged by energy generated from the movement of the user’s mouse, yet Sony lawyers have successfully blocked every attempt to produce a product using the technology.

Venice in Italy is built on 118 sea islets joined by 400 bridges. It is gradually sinking into the water.

Clans of long ago that wanted to get rid of their unwanted people without killing them use to burn their houses down hence the expression “to be fired.” Rubbing Tabasco on one’s upper lip before bedtime is an effective temporary cure for sleep apnea.

In the months that followed, Stewart drew heavy media scrutiny, including a Newsweek cover headlined “Martha’s Mess”. Notably on June 25, 2002, CBS anchor Jane Clayson grilled Stewart on the air about ImClone during her regular segment on The Early Show. Stewart continued chopping cabbage and famously quipped, “I just want to focus on my salad”.

While in confinement, she took a job and became an informal liaison between the administration and her fellow inmates. The People special, Scandals! That Rocked America stated “Some expected America’s goddess of domestic perfection to fall into terminal despair. Instead, with the drive that would make her a billionaire, Stewart took her lemon of a sentence and made lemonade. Heck, she made a lemon soufflé.”

The curved shape of a hockey stick is a throwback to prehistoric use of mastodon tusks in a similar game.
