DADDY LONG LEGS

MAKES ARIZONA PREMIERE AT ATC

BET YOU

DIDN’T KNOW

Created by John Caird, Tony-Winning Director of Les Miserables and Paul Gordon, Composer of Broadway’s Jane Eyre

Fall madly in love this winter with Arizona Theatre Company’s light-hearted new musical Daddy Long Legs, directed and written by John Caird, the Tony Award-Winning director of Les Miserables and Nicholas Nickleby, with music and lyrics by Paul Gordon of the Tony-nominated Jane Eyre. This heart-warming and inventive new romantic musical makes its Arizona premiere in Phoenix at the Herberger Theater Center from December 29, 2011 through January 15, 2012 with a special New Year’s Eve performance on December 31.

Vincent Van Gogh produced more than 2000 works during his life time: approx 900 paintings and 1100 drawings and sketches. Although he is now considered one of the greatest artists of all times he was undervalued and only sold one painting during his life time.

Daddy Long Legs tells the story of a young girl’s Cinderella journey into womanhood, as well as a confirmed bachelor’s awakening into love. Charming and lighthearted, this new musical about falling in love with life begins when an orphanage trustee offers a college education to an 18 year old girl.

About the Film Columnists

The tough choices of determining my best of the more than 300 films I saw this year is indeed a daunting challenge. My short list included ‘Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol’ in IMAX where the visual presentation, stunts, and cast along with an intriguing premise, is an absolute thrill ride; ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ which isn’t a prequel nor a sequel, provides that ‘Missing link’ with great effects of how the apes rose to prominence; ‘The Adventures of Tintin’ and ‘War Horse’, both directed by Steve Spielberg, while one gives us a fantasy adventure for the child in all of us, and the other delivering a poignant story of lessons on family, conviction, and humanity during the World War I years, are but a few of the note worthy movies released. My complete list of my nominees and winners in 22 categories are available at ScreenScene.org and Examiner. com

modern day writer who’s transported every night at midnight for visits of historical notables of the 1920s from the worlds of literature, music, art, and theater with personifications by an impressive cast list. One of the notables is my favorite painter Salvador Dali and to see Adrian Brody bring him to life is quite a treat. In alphabetical order, here are some of my best movies of 2011 The Artist ~ Reminded of my studies in film history while attending film school so many years ago. The magnificent use of modern technology by writer/director Michel Hazanavicius to present a black & white dialog-less silent film complete with the familiar musical accompaniment set in 1927 about the decline of a silent film star as the ‘talkies’ were ushered in. The remarkable performances of the cast convey full emotions without saying a single word with exceptional performances by lead actors Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo.

an espionage thriller about retired Mossad secret agents (Helen Mirren, Tom Wilkinson) and former colleague (Ciarán Hinds) about a ‘mission gone wrong’ in the past, weaves a first rate tale of suspense, startling action, and surprising revelations with two distinct film styles merging as the past (filmed with a sepia tone edge) and the present, blur reality. Drive ~ Actor Ryan Gosling, who’s roles are usually the ordinary likeable ‘guy next door’ as in the current ‘Margin Call’, breaks out in a ‘tour de force’ performance as a Hollywood stunt driver who moonlights as a get-a-way driver for hire, and with the gritty cinematic film noir style of director Nicolas Winding Refn, its fasten your seat belt for the ride of your life!

Stan Robinson, 65, is a retired first assistant director with more than 22 years of experience in film and media production. Read his full features and reviews exclusively online at ScreenScene.org. Randy Montgomery, 34, works in media and marketing and holds a master’s degree in counseling and education. Read his full features and reviews exclusively online at AZWeeklyMagazine.com. Joseph J. Airdo, 28, is a Walter Cronkite School of Journalism graduate with a bachelor’s degree in media analysis and criticism. Read his full features and reviews exclusively online at Examiner.com/Phoenix.

Hugo ~ Legendary director Martin Scorsese innovatively incorporates 3D (his first use) as he presents a 1930s Paris mystery of an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station while paying tribute to the early years of cinema. Young actor Asa Butterfield as the orphan virtually carries the film as the story unfolds in grand style.

Moneyball ~ For the sports enthusiasts (as this reviewer) this account of the magical season of the Oakland A’s in 2002, the colorful manager Billy Beane and his statistical analyst is as entertaining as it is informative with Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill in the title roles.

My Week With Marilyn ~ Director Simon Curtis captures a week in the life of screen giant Marilyn Monroe while shooting in England in 1957. Based on production assistant Colin Clark books of his first job on a movie and his friendship with Marilyn, triggering memories of my first movie job on ‘The Blues Brothers’ (80), Michelle Williams gives an award caliber portrayal as the ensemble cast transports us on a journey of the past. Puss in Boots ~ Admittedly lukewarm to the Shrek films except for one character ‘Puss in Boots’, I was elated when the ‘buzz’ surfaced about the feature length prequel of his backstory before befriending the Shrek group, and I wasn’t disappointed as director Chris Miller brought us the adventures a character with suave and flair in the tradition of Zorro, nicely voiced by Antonio Banderas!

Super 8 ~ Written & directed by J.J. Abrams who’s demonstrated time and again his expertise at storytelling, presents a period film circa 1979 starring kids who witness a mysterious train crash, strange happenings and phenomenon in their small town with the story keeping us on the edge of our seats as the kids set out to solve the mystery! A Look Back at 2011 By Randy Montgomery Another year has come and gone and countless hours have been spent in dark theatres viewing the very best and worst Hollywood has to offer. Critics see more movies than any normal person ever should. This year, I have personally viewed more than 300 films. That’s practically one movie per day. Some days, the studio screening agencies stacked multiple screenings into one evening. As tiring as this may be, it is often very rewarding. One afternoon in the late summer, we were treated to a double feature of “The Devil’s Double” and “Sarah’s Key.” Both were emotionally powerful, extremely well made films. Around the same time, we were shown an early screening of “Warrior.” All three of those films

stayed with me for months. Both “The Devil’s Double” and “Warrior” made it to my Top 10 list for “Best Picture” of 2011. Reflecting on the standout performances and titles for the year, I always take into account multiple factors. One must look at no only how well made the film may be, but what kind of impact it had once I left the theatre. Was I still talking about it days later? Was I moved by a certain scene? Could I not wait to see it again? Surprisingly, many of my Top 10 choices were released in the summer, or early fall. Despite studio buzz around December releases, many of these films made such an impact, that remembering them months later was easy. My top choices in each major category are listed below, but special mention should be given to a select few. Elizabeth Olsen’s portrayal of a young woman recently escaping from a cult in “Martha, Marcy May, Marlene” was one of the most real I have even seen. Acted with such ease, you will forget you are watching a movie. Fellow Simi Valley High School “Pioneer” Shailene Woodley stole the show in the George Clooney drama/comedy “The Descendants.” In a movie that will likely get very

stunt car driver that could have easily grabbed my #1 spot. Ryan Gosling and supporting cast are magnificent. The elevator scene is one of the most intense, well done of the year.

#5 Moneyball An intriguing inside look at the inner workings of professional baseball. Brad Pitt and a surprising performance by Jonah Hill made this account of trading, buying and selling of players a must-see.

Young actors made 2011 a banner year. Strong performances by Hunter McCraken in “Tree of Life”, Thomas Horn in “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close”, Asa Butterfield in “Hugo”, and Saorise Ronan in “Hanna” prove they are the stars of tomorrow. The young cast of “Super 8” delivered one heck of a fun movie. Best Picture

In the day and age of limited attention spans, this silent, black and white film captivated the audience and even garnered a round of applause at my screening in Hollywood opening night. #2 Drive The advertising was a bit misleading. Airdo’s Favorite Flicks of 2011 Over the past 12 months, moviemakers have presented plenty of magnificent motion pictures from which audiences could be entertained, enlightened and encouraged. However, the critic’s curse is to narrow down their list of favorite flicks to 10. So, without further ado...

With “Point Blank,” writer/ director Fred Cavayé gives a shot of adrenaline to the art-house cinema crowd. Easily one of the most exhilarating thrillers of the year, “Point Blank” moves along at a breakneck pace while constantly evolving, leaving the audience on pins and needles every step of the way. While he frequently sacrifices logic for frantic fun, Cavayé created a rare popcorn flick that is smartly attuned to its own uniquely unpredictable rhythms.

consonant characters without ever once leaving the audience confused as to which is which.

4. ‘Water for Elephants’

2. ‘The Artist’

Capturing all of the magic and marvel that circuses must have possessed during the depression, “Water for Elephants” is an enormously enchanting experience. Based on Sara Gruen’s novel by the same name, this romantic drama’s old-fashioned storytelling approach – which focuses on real characters, authentic relationships and honest emotions – makes for a permanently affecting piece of cinema and one of the best motion pictures of 2011.

If film is projected at 24 frames per second and a picture is worth a thousand words, then director Michel Hazavanicius’s 100-minute silent film “The Artist” must be worth 144,000 words. On the other hand, that is a rather black and white way of complimenting a motion picture as transcendentally gorgeous as “The Artist” (which, coincidentally, is in black and white). Instead, it is much more accurate to say that each and every magical moment of the movie is completely captivating, resulting in the richest cinematic experience of 2011.

7. ‘happythankyoumoreplease’ The indie ensemble comedic drama “happythankyoumoreplease” is simply spectacular in every way. Written, directed and starring “How I Met Your Mother” lead Josh Radnor, the movie is a terrifically therapeutic piece of generational cinema. Radnor’s dialogue - which is at the heart of “happythankyoumoreplease” is as clever as it is poignant while his visual style shows a profound love for this ensemble cast of sympathetic characters and the enormously engaging story that is collectively formulated from their independently meaningful memoirs.

5. ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ Summer saved the best for last and its name was “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.” The most explosive blockbuster of the season was, surprisingly, also the most feeling. “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” begins with a relatively simple story of heartbreak and slowly escalates to an all-out action extravaganza. And its greatest quality is its animal thinking – using behavior and action over dialogue to tell its story and evoke not just excitement but empathy, too.

6. ‘The Devil’s Double’ Director Lee Tamahori’s insanely intense biopic “The Devil’s Double” may not amount to much in terms of intellectual value, but the experience is explosively entertaining. Pair tortuous tension with a shockingly graphic aesthetic with which Tamahori chooses to lace the project and you have got one of the most riveting films of the year. Moreover, star Dominic Cooper gives the best performance(s) by an actor of 2011, playing two relatively December 29th, 2011 - January 4th, 2012

3. ‘Small Town Murder Songs’ Filmmaker Ed Gass-Donnelly’s seething thriller “Small Town Murder Songs” is an incredibly unsettling experience. It is also one that keenly echoes the works of the Cohen brothers. Gass-Donnelly employs a slow and deliberate pace to tell this story, covertly sliding “Small Town Murder Songs” under the viewers’ skin. The thrills here are much more emotionally and psychologically based than most genre films and the director does an absolutely stunning job building cerebral tension.

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

1. ‘Drive’ Director Nicolas Winding Refn’s drama “Drive” is a terrific trifecta of style, substance and suspense. The tension that screenwriter Hossein Amini builds from the James Sallis novel can genuinely be cut with a knife. And eventually it is, with plenty of blood being spilled as a result. A simple seat belt is sincerely insufficient to save moviegoers from the best motion picture of 2011. “Drive” is provocatively poetic and practically perfect from departure to destination.

“Sports Fans!”

On Camelback

BETWEEN OUR LIQUID ENVIRONMENT AND THE DIM LIGHTING, SOMEONE’S BOUND TO FIND YOU ATTRACTIVE.

I like my sports, and CK’s Tavern caters to the fans with many TV’s. They also have daily specials to keep it interesting. Mondays: buy one burger, get one half off, and $2.50 pyramid Hefeweizen pints. On Tuesdays they have .40 wings all day. Baja Wednesdays consist of half off all mexican appetizers, $3 sauza margaritas, and $2 Dos Equis drafts. Friday is all you can eat fish fry, and Saturdays are $2.50 blue moon pints, while Sunday is $3 bloody marys and mimosas. 4142 E. Chandler, Phoenix, AZ 85048

One of my favorite places to go; El Hefe’s! They have happy hour every day from 3pm-7pm with live music on Thursdays. Chicas, you can get a three liter box of franzia red for $30 with a minimum of three of you. Fellas, you can get 32oz pacifico, tecate, and corona for $4. Indulging on their $2 tacos is also a great deal. If you go on a Sunday this place is a party all day long for Sunday Funday football. This is a Chicago Bears bar, so whenever they get a touchdown it’s free jello shots for everyone. This place is all about a good time, so get out and come play! 4425 N. Little Guy, but Chuck was the face, the man out on the streets preaching the gospel. On another note, Chuck is a certified Cicerone for beer, the equivalent of a Sommelier for wine.

By “King” James Swann Hello again craft beer lovers, this go round let’s take a break from the usual weekly review and have a look at important people in the Arizona Craft Beer Community. A behind the scenes look at people who this year and in years past have done quite a bit to affect our growing craft beer scene. There have been short lists of this type amassed in the past but mostly by pundits who work outside of the industry. Consider this your Insider’s Guide and keep in mind that this list has no true chronological order. Each person mentioned here is as important as the next and deserves a place in this register for their specific contributions.

Chuck Noll, many know him as a founding father in Arizona for Craft Beer. In the nineties Chuck helped bring Little Guy Distributing to life. Now called World Class Beverages, a subsidiary of Crescent Crown Distribution, Little Guy was dedicated to bringing you beer from craft breweries such as Bear Republic, Ska and Left Hand long before it was a popular notion. At a time when our now biggest local brewery, Four Peaks was only just beginning to flourish, Chuck was blazing a path for craft beer and its drinkers here in Arizona. There were many contributors at

Greg Eccles, Owner at Tops Liquor in Tempe AZ. Many readers may not be familiar with Greg but any list of this type would be incomplete without him. Greg Opened Tops Liquor in 1981 and is currently celebrating his 30 year anniversary selling beer. Beginning with beers from breweries such as Anchor Brewing and Sierra Nevada to name a few, Greg has been dedicated to having the

most complete and eclectic selection of craft brews possible.

Ron Kloth, owner of Papago Brewing in Scottsdale AZ. Ron opened Papago Brewing in 2001 and has been a stalwart craft beer retailer from day one. A haven for craft only distributors like Little Guy, Papago also arranged for and began production of their own brews at a time

BEER! SECTION

As you read the final issue of AZ Weekly BEER! Section for 2011, take a minute to reflect on the year that passed and the great beers you had a chance to try. Think about the ones you enjoyed and the ones that you felt were lacking. Think about how many new beers you tried this year and give yourself credit for being a little more beer-savvy than you were at the beginning of the year. Let’s look forward to 2012 with hopes of new and exciting beers coming to Arizona. Perhaps some new beers from existing brewers, perhaps some return of old friends, and maybe just maybe, the arrival of some brewers new to the state. No matter what 2012 brings, we know that the opportunity to drink great beer will be there and brewers will continue to impress us with their creativity and quality. Let’s also take a minute to thank all those brewers out there for what they did for us this year. Whether it was some outstanding new brands from Arizona breweries that are really starting to come into their own, or comfortable old favorites from brewers celebrating 15th, 20th or even 25th anniversaries, they all deserve our thanks and best wishes for a successful and prosperous new year. So pick out something special to welcome in 2012 with. Look through your beer cellar and find something that you want to try and open it up as the clock strikes midnight. This is the special occasion you have been saving it for. Happy New Beer!

... continued from Page 44. when the public at large were scared by the notion of drinking anything that wasn’t blonde. As a testament to their success, Van Steenberg in Belgium, brewers of Gulden Draak also contract brew a Belgian style triple specifically for Papago. Who else can say that?

Louis Dolgoff, a very important man I think you will agree as he was responsible for bringing Dogfish Head Brewing to Arizona in 2005. Known too many as Dogfish Lou, he now heads up the Beer for Brains Foundation a not for profit organization dedicated to raising money for Brain Cancer Research via craft beer.

Andy Ingram, owner and Brew Master at Four Peaks Brewing. Andy and his partners opened Four Peaks in 1996 with a view to brew great local craft beer. The idea was simple, quality before quantity. Choosing to focus only on Arizona, the brewery has grown by leaps and bounds and is by a far this state’s largest operation. Andy also contributes a regular beer article to AZ. Central and is a very active behind the scenes in the local brewing community.

Derek Osborne, Brew master at BJ’s Brewhouse. Derek known to most in our craft beer community as “DOC” began as a Chiropractor but felt the calling to brew and joined BJ’s in 1996. Working his way up from keg washer, Doc is now regional brewing coordinator in charge of research and development and has won countless medals at the Great American Beer Festival. He is important to this list as he single handedly makes a corporate brewery like BJs LOCAL. Frequently attending local home brewers meetings and helping many of our hometown breweries and brew masters in more ways than you might imagine, Doc is a staple in our Craft Beer scene. Jim Lolli, Owner of Hungry Monk in Chandler AZ. Jim opened a corporate franchise called Buffalo Rings & Wings in 2008 with a vision of great wings, sports and craft beer. He quickly became aware that the corporate edict he had subscribed to wasn’t following his line of thinking. In 2010 he went independent with a new concept called Hungry Monk to pursue his love of bringing great beer to the people. Since its birth, the Hungry Monk has become one of the most popular craft beer destinations in the East Valley.

Landon Evans, Landon and his firm HDE may not be well known in our craft beer community at large but behind the scenes he is truly magic. Landon is the man behind the Ameri-Can Beer Festival, Chandler’s Oktoberfest, Taste of Chandler and SanTan Brewing Company’s advertising strategies. Marketing is huge part of our growing community and Landon has his finger on the pulse. Uwe Boer, Uwe (pronounced uva) began with Sonora Brewing here in Arizona in 1996, and has become a staple in our

Continued on Page 47...

brewing community with Brewers Den and finally Sun Up Brewing located in Central Phoenix. At Sun Up, Uwe maintains a resilient “Real Ale” program and has been a mentor for many local brewers over the years. Layard Mahler, now part owner of Sonoran Brewing in North Phoenix, Layard joined the company as an event coordinator/sales rep in 2008. His main focus since has been producing high quality local beer, keeping his marketing and labeling very Arizona-centric. Believing very strongly in ties to the local community Layard has become a familiar face here in our growing craft beer scene. Ted Golden, part owner and man on the streets at Four Peaks Brewing since 1999. While it’s true that Andy Ingram and his original partners gave Four Peaks their vision, most local bar owners and retail outlets would agree that Teddy was the most important factor in their stunning growth as a company. Trust me, I did the research. Teddy gave Four Peaks a face and an identity at a time when craft and local beer in Arizona was in its infancy. Do you love that Four Peaks tap handle at your favorite watering hole? Thank Teddy. Chris Shinn, Beer Buyer at Boulders on Broadway. Since 2007 Chris has been responsible for the wide and varying selection of beers both in bottle and on tap. Chris is important because of his vision given Boulders proximity to ASU. Chris’s goal is to expand the palates younger drinkers, bringing them into the craft beer fold. His favorite brew is Ska Decadent IPA which he brings in every Thanksgiving. Mark Helmack, formerly a sales rep. with World Class Beverages, Mark now works for the craft beer division at Hensley our local Anheuser Busch distributor. It’s Mark’s job to train and educate more than 300 employees to sell, handle, market and appreciate craft beer. As Hensley expands with brands such as Firestone Walker, Deschutes, Sierra Nevada & Odell it’s important that three generations of “Bud” guys understand what they are selling and how important craft beer has become to our industry at large. Mark works closely with industry insiders such as J.R. Wheeler from Odell & James Gray from Sierra Nevada to make sure the Arizona consumer is getting the best and rarest beers available. Anthony Canecchia, owner and brew master at SanTan Brewing Company since 2007. Anthony makes the list not for his brewing skills, but for his marketing

strategies. He is a very good brewer but many of our local breweries make great beer. Important here is Anthony’s ability to bring his product to the people. For years marketing techniques for breweries in Arizona were best described as “Grass Roots”, mostly reaching only those already in the know. Anthony’s vision changed that, almost forcing other local brewers to rethink their approach in order to keep up. Healthy competition equals growth.

Maureen Bassenberg, Founder of Arizona Girls Pint Night Out. Maureen has taken a giant leap for craft beer kind here in Arizona by bringing the message of quality brew to the ladies. Once a month, Maureen gathers her followers for a ladies only event including tasting, beer education, food pairings and even a bit of brewery history. AZ Girls Pint Night Out celebrated their one year anniversary in May of 2011, score one for the girls!

Tim Huges, currently Employed as a Regional Sales and Marketing Director for Miller/Coors, Tim was a longtime Craft and Import Beer Director for Alliance Beverage Arizona. Managing craft brands such as Lagunitas, Stone, Sam Adams and locals such as Four Peaks, Oak Creek and Nimbus, Tim was quite important in building a face for craft beer here in the Grand Canyon State. One important detail of note, while the movement for craft beer is important the rapid growth we are seeing would not possible without the funds generated by big domestic beer. As an example, Crescent Crown/ World Class also distributes Miller and Coors. The resources generated by the sales of big domestic beers help fund the marketing coffers for craft beer both at Crescent Crown/World Class and at Hensley. Next time you think ill of someone drinking PBR, just remember that one hand washes the other. Harold Sleeman, World Class division manager at Crescent Crown Distributing. For many years before Crescent brought in Little Guy Distribution, now called World Class, Harold was in charge of Import Brand Management. Handling more modern imports such as Stella Artois and Hoegarden that were popular before the birth of a craft beer scene here in Arizona,

Harold was here from the beginning. Now a longtime Employee of World Class, Harold is essentially the man behind the curtain. Responsible for bringing you brands such as Ale Smith, Ballast Point, Green Flash, Left Hand, Bear Republic and many more, no grouping of this type would be complete without this long time craft beer insider. As I write this, I am fast approaching two thousand words which is all the space I’ve been allotted. Understand that this is a Short List, a register that should include far more people important to Craft Beer in Arizona. Shout outs must go to Ty Largo, owner of Up Agency who handles marketing for the Arizona Brewers Guild, Arizona Beer Week & Four Peaks, also to Tina & Scott Stocking owners of Mud Shark Brewing, the first local craft brewery to Can their beer. Lea Huss, co-owner/ operator of Papago Brewing, Lori Eccles owner of Sun Devil Liquor, Ed Gebler our regional Stone Brewing rep. and Isaiah Garfias, creator of the Arizona Craft Beer Lovers Group and last but not least who could forget the Brew Bros? So many great people, so much beer, so little time. As always keep sending those comments and questions to kingjamesswann@gmail.com and have a Safe, Hoppy New Year. Cheers.

Melissa Osborn, is employed at Four Peaks Brewing in Tempe AZ., and is quite important as she is the only female Head Brewer in Arizona. Beginning her career at BJ’s Brewhouse, Melissa joined Four Peaks in 2004 to concentrate on brewing locally. Melissa is also a certified Cicerone and lends support at local home brewers meetings on a regular basis. Austin Santos, Co-owner of 1702 Pizza in Tucson since 2006, Austin is at the head of the class for quality brew in Southern Arizona. With 52 constantly rotating craft beers on tap, great food and the addition of a new one barrel Nano brewery, Austin lives and breathes Tucson Craft Beer. Rob Fulmer, Arizona Society of Home Brewers President. Rob makes the list for one very important reason. Growth. During his tenure as president of ASH, membership numbers have increased significantly and the club has become recognized as the largest in Arizona. Recognition for the club has grown as well with many craft beer retailors offering discounts to members. ASH has even acquired a clubhouse/lodge with a huge cold box for storing homebrew. The Top Extreme Sports Destinations in the World for the Very Top of Your List!! Hawaii

Hawaii is world-renowned as a top adventure holiday destination. As the birthplace 4:15 ofPMsurfing, you’ll be able to catch some amazing waves on the beaches here. It’s also gaining an excellent reputation for kite boarding due to the consistently strong winds blowing around the islands. Hawaii is a great place to explore cave diving or drift diving, where you’re likely to come face-to-face with many of the friendly Hawaiian Monk Seals that sleep the caves. How about some cliff diving? Maui hosted the 2010 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series at Kawainui Falls, which offers divers a 40-foot drop into the water. Whether this is your first adventure trip or you’re an experienced veteran, Hawaii won’t disappoint! The best time to visit is between May and August.

Utah

While you won’t be doing any surfing, there are plenty of extreme sports to throw yourself into in southern Utah. National Geographic Magazine named Westwater Canyon as the “West’s Best Short Whitewater Trip.” You’ll have an exhilarating experience winding through the beautiful cliffs. You can explore rugged territory few will ever see on an off-road Hummer Safari. Or you can climb the cliffs yourself, rappel into hidden chasms, or join a canyoneering tour to leap from a 120-foot high rock arch. Utah is also perfect for mountain biking, with many established trails that will reward you with amazing views. All of these extreme sports are available year-round in Utah.

Follow Us on Zimbabwe

The Victoria Falls region of Zimbabwe offers many sports similar to those in Utah, but with completely different scenery. These are the largest falls in the world – more than one mile wide. The Zambezi River offers the longest commercially run whitewater rafting experience in the world, so you can raft for one day or book a whole week-long adventure. For a different view of the falls, bungee jumping is a popular attraction. And if you’re up for an unusual yet thrilling type of adventure, take a Walk with the Lions: a unique opportunity to touch and photograph these magnificent animals up close. These attractions are all available year-round.

to visit Nepal depends on the sport you’re most interested in. The rainy season (June through August) will put a damper on your dreams of paragliding and bungee jumping, but that’s the best time of year for whitewater rafting and canyoneering. The ideal time for rock climbing would be between September and May.

www.AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Nepal

With the world’s tallest peak, you’re thinking Nepal is all about mountain climbing, but you might be surprised by the variety of extreme sports available here. In addition to rock climbing and canyoneering, you can enjoy snowboarding, paragliding, whitewater rafting, bungee jumping, canyon swings and mountain biking. The best time AZWeeklyMagazine.com

NEW YEAR… NEW EDITION New Edition to Perform with All Six Members Friday, December 30th at Celebrity Theatre Your pre-New Year party is perfectly in place! Urban AZ and Celebrity Theatre are proud to present New Edition featuring all six original members at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, December 30th. Rich in harmony and deep in history, New Edition is arguably the reason why acts such as Usher and B2K have been making females faint during recent years. With a musical legacy dating as far back as 1978, the group has experienced success on multiple levels to become true legends in the game. Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell, Ronnie DeVoe, Ralph Tresvant, Johnny Gill and Bobby Brown have continually set precedents in R&B, with solo albums, side group efforts (Bell Biv Devoe, LSG), and behindthe-scenes power moves (Bivins

discovered acts like Boyz II Men). Their story is one full of triumphs and setbacks. After talent shows led to their discovery by Maurice Starr, their independent debut Candy Girl hit shelves in 1983, featuring the hits “Candy Girl” and “Popcorn Love.” The success of that record helped them move to the majors, putting out 1984’s double platinum New Edition and 1985’s platinum All For Love on MCA. As Bobby Brown embarked on his solo career in the late ‘80s, Johnny Gill stepped in to reinvigorate New Edition on the double platinum Heart Break in 1989. In 1996, Brown reunited with NE to release Home Again. During the promotional tour for Home Again, however, the group decided to part ways yet again.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are still available at Celebrity Theatre or online at www. celebritytheatre. com. To charge by phone, call 602-267-1600 ext.1. All tickets are subject to a surcharge. Celebrity Theatre is conveniently located at 440 N. 32nd St., just 4

blocks south of the Loop 202 freeway, in Phoenix.

Club Red

As all close friends do, they eventually came back together, enjoying renewed success since signing with the Bad Boy label, owned by Sean P. Diddy Combs, in 2002. Currently the group is recording new music, touring and supporting community events through the New Edition Foundation.

December 29th, 2011 - January 4th, 2012 AZ WeeklyMagazine.com

According to the Mayans, 2012 may be the last year we will all be able to toast champagne at midnight on the night of the New Year. There will be no more colorful, fancy, paper top hats and glittering foil crowns to wear upon our heads, or finding a sweetheart to smooch at the stroke of 12. How melancholy if you actually believe such a depressing prophecy, yet how enlightening. If we take anything from the prediction of those ancients it’s this: live like there’s no tomorrow and party like there’s no consequence. If you’ve chosen to spend New Year’s Eve out on the town with the rest of us crazies, head down to Scottsdale where hotel rooms are ample and sipping champagne compliments the tone of the city where us Phoenicians go to make merry. If the idea of attending the block party distresses you, perhaps consider going to what I believe is one of the best dance clubs in the state. I say this because the DJs there never fail at making me want to dance. This New Year’s Eve, DJ Michael James will help introduce you to the New Year and if you arrive before 10, enjoy half off cocktails and complimentary munchies. Since this may be our last New Year soiree, I encourage you to stay out all night and into noon the next morning for Afterglow, Smashboxx’s after party where DJ Sydney Blu will continue to influence dancing. Special guest Sydney Blu comes straight out of Miami where she is the resident DJ at Opium Group and Mansion Miami in South Beach. If that doesn’t convince you of her talents, know that she is the only female to ever make Beatport’s top 10 and is signed on Deadmau5’s record label. This may be your last NYE, so put on some serious dancing shoes, get pretty, and toast in 2012 right. Blackout: Saturday,

December 31st. 8 pm. $35. Afterglow: Sunday, January 1st. 3 am – 12 pm. $25, free if you attend Blackout. Ages 21+ Toby Keith’s White Trash New Year’s Bash If dressing up is not your thing and heading down to Scottsdale or Tempe on New Year’s Eve makes you cringe, then an alternative is fulfilling your white trash dreams at Toby Keith’s where you can sip beer from mason jars and flirt with one of their whiskey girls as you make your way to their 85 foot guitar shaped bar. If you’re one of those people who say, “I like all music except for country,” you’re repetitive and missing out on some of the best drunk dancing that can be had. Live music by Marshal Reign may change your mind and by midnight when it’s time for the champagne toast, you’re vision may be blurred enough to see the beauty in sporting a mullet. It’s your last chance to be trashy in 2011, skip the pretension and keep it country. Saturday, December 31st. 8 pm. $20, $35 for couples. 1065 N Dobson, Mesa. Ages 21+.

* July 16, 2004: Martha Stewart is sentenced to five months in prison (and five months of house arrest) for a stock sale. According to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Stewart avoided a loss of $45,673 by selling all 3,928 shares of her ImClone Systems stock on December 27, 2001, after receiving material, nonpublic information from Peter Bacanovic, who was Stewart’s broker at Merrill Lynch. Martha Helen Stewart (née Kostyra), is an American business magnate, media personality, author, and magazine publisher and founder of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. She has gained success through her intelligence, perseverance, simply put; her pure resolve to bring to fruition her visions.

On the cover of the May 1995 issue, New York Magazine declared her as “the definitive American woman of our time”.

Although the media widely speculated that the situation would effectively be the end of her media empire, Stewart began a comeback campaign in 2005, with her company returning to profitability the following year. In the months that followed, Stewart drew heavy media scrutiny, including a Newsweek cover headlined “Martha’s Mess”. Notably on June 25, 2002, CBS anchor Jane Clayson grilled Stewart on the air about ImClone during her regular segment on The Early Show. Stewart continued chopping cabbage and famously quipped, “I just want to focus on my salad”.

While in confinement, she took a job and became an informal liaison between the administration and her fellow inmates. The People special, Scandals! That Rocked America stated “Some expected America’s goddess of domestic perfection to fall into terminal despair. Instead, with the drive that would make her a billionaire, Stewart took her lemon of a sentence and made lemonade. Heck, she made a lemon soufflé.” NEWS OR NEWS WORTHY???
