AZ DIAMOND at Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre in Mesa. An enthusiastic, high-energy crowd welcomed back Neil Diamond Tribute Band, AZ Diamond with open arms during a nostalgic Sunday afternoon performance this past weekend. AZ Diamond performed all the classic Neil Diamond hits that have remained popular through the years this matinee show within the cozy confines of the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre in Mesa, Arizona. From the moments the curtains lifted and the band took stage, it was clear this audience was in store for a truly memorable performance, one that would prove to reflect the same magic and charisma that has made Neil so popular over the years. The sold out audience was not a shy one - and certainly didn’t take long to get warm, moving and singing along. Nearly word for word, without a care in the world - hands were clapping, heads were bobbing and arms were swaying as the band performed timeless Neil Diamond hits such as “Forever in Blue Jeans,” “September Morning,” “Kentucky Woman,” “Song Sung Blue,” “Cracklin’ Rosie,” “Hello Again,” “Solitary Man,” “Desiree,” “Cherry Cherry,” “Thank The Lord For The Nighttime,” “Sweet Caroline” and many more. DON QUIXOTE Ballet Arizona at Symphony Hall There were no black swans at the Ballet Arizona production of Don Quixote this past weekend. Instead the Phoenix faithful were treated to a Valentine’s special with a lively, humorous and entertaining production of Don Q from Ib Anderson and company. The Choreography, Music, Scenery, Costumes, and of course the dancers themselves, were top shelf again. With civility and romance in short supply, IB’s production once again struck a beautiful chord of love and hope. Kudos to all the company for a ‘dream’ come true! And Turner Classic Movies’ Robert Osborne has selected three classic films for screening at the event including “North by Northwest,” “The Heiress,” and “The Third Man.”

The Sedona Film Festival presents 145 films for the 17th annual festival With a well-rounded presentation of shorts, documentaries, animations and full-length features, the Sedona International Film Festival will screen 145 films, including “Sedona, The Motion Picture”, and three films with nominations for the 2011 Academy Awards. The documentary “Waste Land” will be screened at 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20 at the Sedona Performing Arts Center at Sedona High School, 9:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 24 at the Harkins 6 Theaters and on closing night. A second documentary, “Inside Job,” will be shown Sunday, Feb. 27 at 6:10 p.m. at Harkins, and “Another Year,” nominated for Best Screenplay for Mike Leigh, is scheduled to be shown Sunday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. at three venues from February 20 – February 27, 2011. The guests and special attendees are just as impressive as the film presented. Scheduled to appear are comedian Jonathan Winters will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Festival following a screening of a film featuring the renowned comedian tilted “Certifiably Jonathan”, in a presentation by fellow comic Rita Rudner. Rudner will also be honored when her new film screens. She and her husband, Martin Bergman, will screen their newest film, “Thanks”, at the Festival.

On the schedule for viewing are seven environmentally focused films as well as films that deal with border issues, inspiration through the arts, games and sports, gay and lesbian themes, indigenous cultures, family, women’s issues, war and politics, spiritual and metaphysical, inspirational stories of mentally or physically challenged individuals, education, the issue of aging, Jewish interest, animal interests and the worlds of children, as well as foreign films from 18 countries have been accepted into the Festival. The night before the festival officially opens, on Saturday February 19th, features a special preview premiere screening of “Sedona: The Motion Picture” starring Francis Fisher, Barry Corbin and Beth Grant, which was filmed in and around Sedona with a score by Ebony Tay (“Hate Crime”) performed by musicians from The Juilliard School. The venues for the films to be screened includes the Harkins Sedona 6 Theatres, a special theater at the Sedona Rouge Resort where patrons can enjoy food and cocktails during the films, and at the brand new Sedona Performing Arts Center at Sedona High School in West Sedona with a 750-seat theater. Caruso knows that casting is one of the most important pieces of the filmmaking process, especially when developing a fantasy flick with the potential of becoming the next big film franchise. However, Caruso believes wholeheartedly that he got it right with the cast of “I Am Number Four.” Alex Pettyfer stars as an alien fugitive with extraordinary abilities, one of nine living on Earth, who poses as an ordinary teenager in the hope of evading those sent to kill him.

He had sort of this great vulnerability and he had the ability to make you doubt that he can pull this off.” And no one doubted that more than Pettyfer himself, who admits to telling Caruso during his audition that he was simply incapable of playing the lead character in “I Am Number Four.” “He’s such a vulnerable character and you want to root for him and I didn’t feel like anyone would root for me to play this guy,” Pettyfer explains. “I really wanted that feeling of the reality as is. Take a look at some of the offerings from local brewers: Papago Brewing is bringing their 10th Anniversary Rye Barleywine, their limited release Hop Tamale, Bucket Hugger Imperial Stout and single hop series Hopago IPA, among others. SanTan Brewing is offering Night of The Living Red, VOLTRON Collaboration Imperial Red Ale, and Sex Panther Chocolate Barleywine. From the folks at Sonoran look for Inebriator Stout, Beer Week Double Red and a limited release of the critically acclaimed Sonoran 200. Thunder Canyon in Tucson, a perennial medal winner at the Great American Beer Festival, makes the trip north with Big Red Vibe, Old Humulus, Bing Bang Ale and Orange U Glad. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Bing Bang so that should be a treat. And there will be plenty more. The out of town brewers decided they had to step up their game as well. So look for The Bruery Mischief, Moylan’s Barrel Aged Grand Cru and Barrel Aged Scotch

Last year’s concerns about food have been erased; look for plenty of food vendors which should eliminate the lines from last year. Great live music rounds out the day. If you’re looking for some early morning sustenance to build a little base before the event, several of the area brewpubs and restaurants will be offering a kegs and eggs beer brunch. The closest to the festival will be Sun Up Brewing at 322 E Camelback, also convenient to the light rail. They will be starting at 8:00 AM. LOCAL BREWERS PREPPED AND READY FOR BEER WEEK

Here we are, the last AZ Weekly before Arizona Beer Week. So what makes Beer Week, Beer Week? It’s the hard work of the local brewers who are the basis for the growing beer culture we have in Arizona. The sponsor for Beer Week is the Arizona Brewers Guild. The Guild is made up of Arizona breweries along with allied members and its mission is to support local brewing efforts. Many Guild members will be producing a special double red ale for Beer Week. Look for special tappings at the Strong Beer Festival and throughout the week. The 29 brewer members will be very active during Beer Week, so let’s take a look at what some of them are up to.

Papago Brewing will be featuring events at their establishment located at 7107 E. McDowell in Scottsdale as well as away from their location. Check out their Sunday night Cheese and Beer Pairing event at Cheuvront on Central in Phoenix, or their Wednesday night Vegetarian Beer Dinner at Atlas Bistro right up Scottsdale road from the pub. If you want to see what’s going on at the brewery, Tuesday night will be CANdemonium starting at 6:00 PM. SKA Brewing, Big Sky Brewing and Breckenridge will be offering their canned beers that evening. For Breckenridge, it will be the official introduction of the canned version of Avalanche and Lucky U IPA. Wednesday night while the vegetarian dinner is going on up the street, Papago gets to the meat of great beer by hosting a New Belgium event featuring kegs of La Folie as well as a couple of other beers from the Lips of Faith line. Monday will be their Manless Monday event with Arizona Girls Pint Out, Tuesday is Taste the Difference night featuring a Beer and Wine dinner with Arizona Stronghold wines. Outside the pub, look for a great event at Taste of Tops on Thursday as it is a local tap takeover…24 tap handles, all of them local beers. Friday night, SanTan keeps the spirit of cooperation going as they pair up with Left Hand Brewing for an event at Flanny’s in Tempe. This night will feature various beer blends and will be a fun time. Sun Up Brewing hosts one of the first events of the week as they will have a Beer Brunch starting at 8:00 AM on Saturday February 19th. With a breakfast menu and some special beers, it is the perfect way to warm up for the Strong Beer Festival that afternoon. And if you over indulge at the Strong Beer Festival stop by on Sunday for their hangover cure with Posole and $2.00 tostadas… and if you’re a fan of “hair of the dog” then it will be Happy Hour all day. Every night there will be a special keg tapped and Monday will be a pin of Barleywine, Tuesday will be a guest German beer for German Brewers Night (I will give you a hint, it’s one of brewmaster Uwe Boer’s favorite beers), Thursday will be a special barrel of Aged Scotch Ale, Friday is Cask Aged Cherry Vanilla Imperial Stout and Saturday will be the Double Rye Black IPA, that’s a mouthful. These kegs will go fast so get there early. Also, on Wednesday night, Sun Up will team up with Crispin Ciders for a special Girls Pint Out event.

night for a special event. Sonoran and Tucson entry Thunder Canyon will also be featured at a variety of Drink Local events going on throughout the Valley next week. Beer Week will bring out a real sense of cooperation between local breweries as well as out of state ones, as you may have noticed from the schedule. This is especially noticed by the collaborative beer named Voltron. Much like the Saturday morning cartoon, where five robotic lions joined up to create an even more powerful entity capable of saving the universe, Votron the beer is a collaborative effort between the five Arizona breweries mentioned above. Each brewery created their Beer Week double red ale, and then it was blended to form Voltron. This is a once in a lifetime beer and will be available at the Strong Beer Festival, at the contributor pubs and at a very few select accounts throughout the state. Perhaps the most collaborative event of the whole week will be the Epicuriad to be held on Friday night at Firesky Resort in Scottsdale. This charity event, benefitting the Beer For Brains Foundation will feature 10 of the top chefs in Arizona, including Beau MacMillan and Aaron May, working with six different Arizona breweries and five local wineries to match a dish with both the beer and wine. Which chef can do the best job with that challenge? Will wine be the preference of the crowd, or will beer emerge victorious? $75 gets you into this premiere event. There will be over 150 events going on and some people are taking a week of vacation to do as many as possible. Tavern on Mill Think of Mill Avenue in Tempe and you have to think about Tavern on Mill. They were the first bar in the Valley to feature Left Hand Milk Stout on the nitro tap and they continue to be a leader. This time they are leading off the closing event of Beer Week. Sneaking in an event on Sunday the 27th, the Beers in the Hood event will give you a chance to work off your Beer Week excess consumption. Bring your bike and start at Tavern on Mill, ride to Boulders on Broadway, then to Taste of Tops and finish up at Crave. If you drove your bike to Tempe, go ahead and have a little dinner when you get back to Tavern on Mill to pick up your car. The fun starts at Noon.

Moto 6845 N. 16th Street, Phoenix Moto doesn’t have a lot of events going on, but with what they are bringing to the table, they don’t need to. They will be the last stop on the Bar Hopping with Breckenridge night on Thursday. So, a rare opportunity to see Tebo from

Breckenridge in our fair city should be enough. Friday night will make you forget all about that as Moto hosts The Big IPA Event starting at 4:00. Good For You Hot Fudge Sauce by Chef Rachel Albert Not just for Valentine’s Day, hot fudge sauce makes topping for fresh or frozen bananas, freshly sliced peaches, nectarines, berries, poached pears, ice cream, frozen yogurt, or dairy free frozen desserts, any time of year. Unfortunately, many commercial sauces contain hazardous corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, refined vegetable oils, hydrogenated fats, and other ingredients that can undermine your health. But don’t despair. You can make a healthier version at home in four easy steps. This recipe comes from The Ice Dream Cookbook: Dairy Free Ice Cream Alternatives with Gluten-Free Cookies, Compotes, and Sauces written by me, Chef Rachel Albert. You’ll find other great recipes in the book, available at Changing Hands Books and Healing Pages Books in Tempe.

Ingredients:

Casual Urban Cool Fireplace Lunch Dinner Late Nite Happy Hour Patio Dining Craft Beer! Full Bar! Delicious Food!

3/4 cup unsweetened premium or lite (reduced fat) coconut milk; additional 1/4 cup as needed to thin 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/4 to 1/3 cup (local raw) honey 1/8 teaspoon finely ground unrefined sea salt (Redmond Real Salt or Celtic Sea Salt) 2 ounces unsweetened baker’s chocolate, coarselychopped into 1/2-inch pieces 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon pure stevia extract powder (with nothing added) or 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon clear stevia extract liquid 1. Combine coconut milk, unsweetened cocoa powder, honey and salt. Bring to a boil over medium heat, whisking constantly, until the mixture until hot and smooth. 2. Remove from heat. Add chocolate and vanilla and whisk until smooth. Taste and adjust as needed. If too thick, add additional coconut milk 1 tablespoon at a time. 3. Let stand for 5 to 10 minutes, then serve. Refrigerate in a covered heatproof bowl, or custard cups. 4. Gently warm leftover sauce in a heatproof bowl in a 250° F toaster oven or in a double boiler or saucepan over very, very low heat, stirring periodically. If too thick, add 1 or 2 tablespoons additional coconut milk.

Blues Blast 2011 Sat Feb 19th

The time has come for this annual festival to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Of course the only way to do it properly is to invite some of the leading figures in Blues music today to help us rejoice. This concert will be held under clear skies at the Mesa Amphitheater. The Tommy Castro Band headlines after 4 award wins at the Blues Music Awards. Joining Tommy is Deanna Bogart, a Maryland-based pianist/saxophonist known for blending a mix of 1930’s style boogie and contemporary blues sounds. Trampled Under Foot, winners of the 2008 Blues Challenge, are back from playing in Norway and are appearing in the Southwest for the first time. Local favorites Cold Shot and the Hurricane Horns are also hitting the stage as well as Krimson Chord, whose style is that of early 60’s Chicago Blues. To keep the music going, the Rythym Room will
