THE SOUND OF MUSIC at The Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre, Mesa There’s good reason to be happy again during these challenging and mercurial times - a beautiful and touching production of The Sound of Music opened this weekend at The Broadway Palm in Mesa. This production brings hope again to every person facing an uncertain future, whether in Wisconsin or Cairo. In the end, the truth and the light prevail. Which in this short two hour production revolves around two courageous characters - Maria and Georg Von Trapp, who fall in love and stand up for what they believe, in the face of evil and madness. Capturing the beauty of this musical favorite from Rodgers and Hammerstein, and the book by Howard Lindsey and Russel Crouse, is Paige Mattox as Maria and Rob Watson as Georg. The Direction from Dean Sobon must have been fun with the chemistry these two breathed into this family favorite. You’ll fall in love with Maria the moments she sings the first note of “The Sound of Music”, while capturing the hearts of the children in “Do-Re-Mi” and “The Lonely Goatherd”; and Georg in “How Can Love Survive” and “No Way To Stop It”. Oh yes, those adorable and charming Von Trapp children - that nearly steal the show with their cute and lovable antics. Led in this cast by Donovan Fiore, Jessie Pauley, Jonah Carlson, Payton Bioletto, Jocelyn Kleinman, and the darling Rebecca Webb. I’ll have to see this show twice just to see the double cast version of these Von Trapp children. You’ll also enjoy the stellar voices of Mother Abbess (Kathleen Ruhleder) and the Nuns of Nonnberg Abbey on “Preledium” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain”. This show deserves a “highest mark award” for bringing this wonderful story back into our hearts with loving kindness. Thru April 9th Tickets 480-325-6700 or BroadwaypalmWest.com “All the wrong people in love with all the wrong people.” Sydney, Ten Chimneys TEN CHIMNEYS Arizona Theatre Company at The Herberger Theater Center “Much ado about nothing” as Shakespeare would say - but in Wisconsin that might not be so true anymore. This is the location of ATC’s world première production of Ten Chimneys by Jeffrey Hatcher that opened this weekend to an enamored local audience-who were treated to a great show loaded with wit, innuendo and dramatic fanfare. This is the true story (yet fictionalized) of the famous dynamic acting duo of Lynn Fontanne (Suzanne Bouchard) and Alfred Lunt (Steve Hendrickson). These two are the ying yang yolk of this cleverly written and produced play within a play, set in the pastoral settings of southern Wisconsin between 1938 and 1945 at their infamous country home with ten chimneys. There’s fun to be had in this family affair revolving around a rehearsal and production of “The Seagull” by Chekov, and these two are the guiding sails of this fluffy drama attraction. But there’s no trick without a mark - which comes in the form of another famous actress Uta Hagen(Anna Bullard), who marvelously joins the company for a summer of intrigue and romance. Wrap mother superior Hattie Sederholm, Alfred’s mother (Linda Stephens) into the picnic with her son Carl Sederholm(Marcus Truschinski), the family hustler, and his half sister Louise Greene(Naomi Jacobson), the family servant, with Mr. Sydney Greenstreet(Michael Winters) making a grand appearance, and you have “a Vesuvius of mucus” playing out in full wit and wisdom. Tim Eriksen is the only musician to have shared the stage with both Kurt Cobain and Doc Watson (not to mention Jack White and Ralph Stanley), and his media appearances have ranged from “A Prairie Home Companion” to the Academy Awards. Having graduated from early shows at punk mecca CBGB, Eriksen has performed more recently as a soloist in Evan Chambers’s symphonic work “The Old Burying Ground” at his Carnegie Hall debut and with Omar Sosa during two week-long stints at the Blue Note Jazz Club. In the studio, he has worked with producers including Joe Boyd, T-Bone Burnett, and Steve Albini. Ultimately, Tim Eriksen is not really part of any one scene. “The scene I exist in doesn’t really exist,” he insists. Stan: Natalie Portman - Her performance of a ‘role within a role’ captures the duality of the character both emotionally and physically with a stunning performance as an actor and a skillful ballet dancer for her dancing scenes.

Joseph: Colin Firth (“The King’s Speech”) - As stuttering royalty in a period piece, Firth kind of hit the Oscar jackpot with this role, at least when you consider the award’s history. Randy: Colin Firth - This is a tough one, both Javier Bardem and Colin Firth are more than deserving. Since I have to choose, I say Firth. Stan: Colin Firth - Portraying an actual person is a daunting challenge for any actor, through his portrayal of King George VI; we emotionally feel the intricacies’ of the character he presented.

Joseph: Melissa Leo (“The Fighter”) - Leo gave stellar performances in several movies last year, including “Conviction,” “The Dry Land” and “Welcome to the Rileys,” so Oscar will definitely reward her. Randy: Hailee Steinfeld - Her performance made True Grit, so it would only be natural that Hailee Steinfeld takes “Best Supporting Actress.” Stan: Melissa Leo - Shedding the usual nuances of past roles, delivers a character of extremes yet maintains the likability of a loved one as the controlling mother.

Best Supporting Actor: Joseph: Christian Bale (“The Fighter”) - Alex Pettyfer, from “I Am Number Four” and the upcoming “Beastly,” promised me that Bale would win for “tackling a role within a role.” Randy: Christian Bale - His performance in The Fighter was a bit overdone and annoying to me, but I think Christian Bale will sweep this category. Stan: Christian Bale - Known for his ‘chameleon physicality’ of the roles he undertakes, his performance of a man in turmoil is mesmerizing to watch as before our eyes he is a thin ‘drugged out’ at the start. By the end, he’s a healthy framed man on the road to recovery. Best Actress: Joseph: Natalie Portman (“Black Swan”) - Although her appearance with Ashton Kutcher in “No Strings Attached” may have slightly reduced her chances, Portman is still a nobrainer. Randy: Natalie Portman - Jennifer Lawrence SHOULD be the winner, but don’t be surprised if Natalie Portman walks away with the golden statue.

Best Animated Feature Film: Joseph: “Toy Story 3” - Since the Academy will undoubtedly fail to acknowledge what is truly best movie of 2010 with a Best Picture win, it surely will not rob it of a much-deserved win in this category. Randy: ‘Toy Story 3’ - No question, this one will go to Toy Story 3. If it won’t win “Best Picture,” it will easily snag the “Animated” category. Stan: ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Presents a film that virtually entertains viewers of all ages while delivering messages of courage, parenting, and friendship we can all take with us to enhance our lives. BEER! YOUR ARIZONA BEER WEEK ‘MIDWEEK REPORT’ Here we are already mid-way through Arizona Beer Week. Is everybody still standing? Hello, anybody? Bueller?? Anyway, I know you are all still out there, and in case you weren’t certain, we still have a few more days of fun and excitement left. Let’s recap the first couple of days of Arizona Beer Week and take a look at what might be exciting to catch on the last couple of days. Great Divide snuck in under the radar on Friday with an unofficial first event of Beer Week held at Whole Foods Chandler. Tannea who was all over town got the ball rolling with a nice mellow tasting just to prepare everybody for the official Day 1. That day started with several breakfast events

Sun Up’s limited offering of Hefeweizen Pancakes, Breakfast Sandwich or Huevos Rancheros was a winning combination and the closest place to Steele Indian School Park, sight of the Arizona Brewers Guild Strong Beer Festival. While the Guild couldn’t control the weather, they did a great job on everything else. Everything was on time, the band was great, there were plenty of food options and an amazing amount of great beer. One of the highlights was VOLTRON, a blend of Imperial Red Ales made by Papago Brewing, SanTan Brewing, Sonoran Brewing, Sun Up Brewing and Tucson’s Thunder Canyon. What was even more impressive was that all five of those breweries were lined up allowing you to sample the component beers of VOLTRON before trying the

blend itself. Other highlight beers included Breckenridge TWENTY, their twentieth anniversary beer which was a whiskey barrel aged version of the 471 Extra ESB. Ska had Dementia, a barrel aged version of Euphoria Pale Ale. Their were also barrel aged offerings from Moylan’s (Barleywine and Grand Cru), Left Hand (Wake Up Dead In A Barrel), Lost Coast (an Imperial Stout) and Crispin (Desert Noir, an unfiltered apple cider with agave nectar and prickly pear aged in a barrel). Oak was not the only flavor available as Anderson Valley showed up with both Brother David’s Triple and Imperial IPA, The Bruery had Mischief pouring, Great Divide had their brand new Grand Cru along with Smoked Baltic Porter, Old Ruffian and Hercules. Global Beer Network was a big hit with new offerings Petrus Aged Pale and Troubadour Magma to put alongside classics Piraat and

Gulden Draak. We also saw great beer from Shmaltz, Redstone, New Belgium and many more. After Strong Beer was over, many folks headed over to TT Roadhouse for an after party featuring Big Sky. At the end of the day it was clear that Arizona Beer Week was ahead of everybody else one to zero. It was looking like a shutout might happen. Sunday was a little more mellow, but full of events. A bike ride in the wet remnants of Saturday included four bars featuring Ska and SanTan products followed by an American Homebrewers Association membership rally at SanTan, while the bike ride was going on in Chandler, a little further north in Tempe, Boulders on Broadway was putting on their own mini-festival. There were also promotions around town for Shmaltz, Left Hand and Global Beer Network, and the big event of the evening a mead dinner at Trader Vic’s. With the incredible food of Chef Justin Pfeilsticker along with Redstone’s Meads, this event was a major hit. Add in the attendance of Chairman of the Mead, David Myers and the event was even better. Deadlines prohibit us from including additional recaps but safe to say there was enough going on that everybody who wanted to, found something fun to do. So what’s left for Arizona Beer Week? Well if you are reading this on Wednesday night, or more likely Thursday, you still have plenty of time to dive in and enjoy yourself. Thursday night you can go bar hopping with Tebo from Breckenridge as the man known as the Mayor of LoDo starts his evening at Carlos O’Briens in Phoenix, and then hits new beer hotspot 13 Northe followed by The Garage and finishing up at Moto. There are promotional events and tastings from Lost Coast, Ballast Point, Anderson Valley, Artisanal Imports, Left Hand and Big Sky along with no less than four beer dinners. Join Marty from Bell’s as he offers up several rare beers at Atlas Bistro, or enjoy the food of Taggia during the first Arizona Girls Pint Out co-ed event, a Strong Beer Dinner to benefit Beer For Brains Foundation, an Alaskan dinner at Talking Stick Resort or local favorites Sonoran Brewing at T. Cooks. Plenty of Thursday night options, oh and Taste of Tops has a Local Tap Takeover event where all 24 taps will be devoted to local beers. Taste of Tops has an extension of premise permit for this event so there will be plenty of room.

Friday features some of the best events of the week. Flanny’s is offering a beer blends experience with SanTan and Left Hand, Breckenridge will be at Whole Foods Chandler, Bell’s will be at Sun Devil with some special beers and Don from Big Sky will be hosting a party at Mellow Mushroom. Some of the truly special events include and Alaskan Smoked Porter Verti-

cal Tasting at Taste of Tops, several vintages will be featured; the Big IPA event at Moto which will offer Ballast Point Tongue Buckler, Double Dorado and Sculpin, along with Moylan’s Hopsickle, Bell’s Hopslam and Redstone Nectar of the Hops. Papago Brewing has their Night of the Barrels featuring more than 10 barrel aged goodies from a variety of breweries. Finally, one of the showstopper events of Beer Week is The Epicuriad. Being put on by The Beer For Brains Foundation at Firesky Resort, this is a one of a kind event. Local food, local beer and local wine all share center stage as 10 Arizona chefs including Beau MacMillan and Aaron May attempt to create the best dish possible to match with an Arizona Beer and an Arizona Wine that they have been assigned. The public gets to decide which chef did the best job and which pairings overall were better, beer or wine. Only forty or so spots remained for this event as of Sunday, so get your tickets soon. Saturday is the last official day of Beer Week and it will offer a smaller beer festival featuring only local beers down at Barrio Brewing in Tucson. In the Phoenix market, look for the week to wind down with a Bell’s event at Hungry Monk and a Left Hand Tasting at Handlebar Pub and Grille in Apache Junction. Sunday will be a final event featuring another bike pub crawl, this time in Tempe, starting at Tavern on Mill and heading to Boulders on Broadway followed by Taste of Tops and ending at Crave. The other thing that gets overlooked is accounts featuring specials all week long. Plenty of time to take advantage of those events including a Beer and Burger special at Original Wineburger, a Beer Pairing special at The Garage, Beer and Food pairings at Rico’s at the Squaw Peak Hilton and Food and Beer pairing specials at Fat Willy’s located in the East Valley. Fat Willy’s, in case you haven’t checked it out yet is slowly becoming a craft beer destination in the East Valley. Known for their great food, a notch or two above your typical sports bar fare, they have added several great local beers in both package and draft formats. Check them out at any of their Mesa locations, including 1762 Greenfield, 2622 E. University and 9937 E. Baseline.

SanTan Brewing Company Unveils Mixed 12-Packs of Craft Beer in Cans The SanTan Brewing Company of Chandler announced that four of its award-winning craft beers – Hopshock IPA, HefeWeizen Wheat, Devil’s Ale and Epicenter Amber Ale – will be sold in a new variety 12-pack (cans). Since their release in Summer 2010, the canned SanTan brews have been extremely popular with beer aficionados. The new SanTan mixed 12-packs will be available year-round at select retail locations serviced by Crescent Crown Distributing. Distribution is expected to expand throughout the year. SanTan HopShock IPA (India

Pale Ale) is a West Coast Ale with an intense bitterness derived from the distinct citrus/pine character of Pacific Northwest hops. A dry, crisp malt character and aggressive alcohol make this IPA a Hop-Heads passion. IPAs pair well with spicy foods.

SanTan Devil’s Pale Ale is deep golden-maroon in color with a light citrusy hop flavor balanced with a firm caramel malt character. Pale ales go great with burgers and sandwiches. SanTan Epicenter Amber Ale features a deep garnet amber hue with

Great AZ Beer Festival Pub Flosstradamus at BarSmith Crawl Sat 26th If you had read last week’s column of Fri 25th One of my favorite new places to hit up late night is BarSmith Downtown. Two floors with a lounge/club downstairs and a rooftop bar and dance floor usually blasting a different set from the speakers upstairs. What’s great about this place is the feel of it all, you don’t have the pretentiousness and “be seen” vibe of Old Town yet it’s not flip flops and college kids like in Tempe. Standing all on its own, there is more of an underground feel here, who knows maybe it’s the Downtown skyscrapers that make me forget I’m in AZ or maybe it’s the crowd who a lot of the times is there for the music, to dance and get it out of their systems. This Friday is the perfect time to checkout out BarSmith as they will be host to DJ Duo Flosstradamus. Chicago Djs J2k and Autobot make up this music machine that’s created quite a name for themselves nation-wide performing at the Coachella Music Festival, Pitchfork Music Festival, Lollapalooza and South by Southwest. From their fans perspective, “you don’t go to see Flosstradamus, you go to dance to Flosstradamus.” Known for getting any crowd into a dance frenzy, the duo spins electro rock and has the talent to mix in popular and sometimes forgotten dance floor hits.
