When the ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ was released in 1975, it was a commercial flop. The producers then decided to screen it only at midnight shows. It became a cult movie and for a long time held the record for continuous running, it grossed more than $200 million. It also is one of the world’s most staged productions!

Topher Grace’s long-sought after crush in Take Me Home Tonight is Tori Fredreking, played by Teresa Palmer. If Palmer looks familiar, she should. The Australian born actress is currently starring in the sci-fi action flick I Am Number 4. Set in the late 80’s, Take Me Home Tonight gave Palmer a unique opportunity. “I was born in 1986. I had to live vicariously through the movie since I didn’t get to experience the 80’s.” She may not have been around when many of the songs featured in the film were at the top of the charts, but Palmer is a fan nonetheless. “The music is incredible in the film. Topher and his (writer/producer) partner Gordon wrote out a list of songs they wanted in the movie before we started filming. Ninety percent of that list ended up in the film.” Music is a huge part of this raucous, wildly funny and romantic comedy. One song you won’t hear is the song that inspired the title. The Eddie Money song was left out of the film. “We knew that we would be playing that song so many times throughout the trailer, so we felt the public would be sick of it by the time they got around to seeing the actual movie,” says the actress.

Kim Carnes’ Bette Davis Eyes, a favorite song of Palmer’s from the 80’s made it into the movie. “I was lucky enough to have that as my slow motion intro into the party scene.” Another favorite song and scene, NWA’s Straight out of Compton, which provides the musical background for a pivotal moment in the script. The song choices will make children of the 80’s and fans of the time period long for a time gone by. Though the film is set in the iconic decade, the filmmakers and crew had a specific goal in mind, as Palmer explains, “We didn’t want to spoof the 80’s at all. We wanted it to feel like a genuine film that was made in 1988.” Awkwardness in school certainly isn’t tied to a decade or grade. Grace’s character was too shy and felt unworthy of his crush’s attention in high school. Many of us can relate to his character’s dilemma. Palmer shares a similar story. “In primary school I did not understand that wearing socks with sandals was not a cool thing. I admit that I was very much the outcast in primary school. I had a crush. I was absolutely not popular enough to get near him. When I turned 14, he ended up being my very first kiss. Suddenly he asked me out on a date. We went to the skate park and rode our skateboards.” While set in Los Angeles, Take Me Home Tonight was shot in and around Phoenix. Look for Metrocenter Mall, the iconic Courtesy Chevrolet sign in the background of an outside shot and Papago Plaza at Scottsdale and McDowell in the background. “Arizona and Phoenix embraced us a crew,” says Palmer. “We had an amazing group of extras that came in day in and day out. We would start our days at 6am and finish at 6pm. They were so enthusiastic. We got along very well with everyone. We ended up partying with the extras. They would come out with us on the weekends. We were blessed to shoot here.”

‘Marwencol’ ~ His cure is his fantasies Review by Stan Robinson Fresh off its win last week of an Independent Spirit Award, this true story documentary by director Jeff Malmberg presents the amazing story of Mark Hogancamp, who was the victim of a vicious attack that left him brain-damaged and virtually penniless. After numerous visits with a therapist that seemed to have no effect, Mark creates his own way of coping with his trauma, he builds ‘Marwencol’, a 1/6th scale World War II-era town he creates in his backyard. In his town he incorporates friends, relatives, and neighbors with dolls and toy replicas for his town, which he controls and lives out his fantasy stories. ‘Marwencol’ is a very moving film and a testament to the spirit of Mark Hogancamp to live life on his terms in spite of the ‘cards’ life has dealt him in his later years. ‘The Over the Hill Band’ ~ Starting again has no age limits Review by Stan Robinson Perhaps I’m a bit biased because at 62 in 2008, I set out in a direction because of an injury, this story touched my heart. After the death of her husband, Claire (Marilou Mermans) who’s 70 years old decides to reconnect with her estranged son, a R&B musician (Jan Van Looveren) who hasn’t faired very well through the years. Her plan, restart the girl group she used to sing in with two of her friends from the old days. Her son agrees under one condition: the band has to play ‘his’ music. Continued on Page 11...

AND THERE YOU HAVE IT! That’s it, we’re done! The first Arizona Beer Week is officially in the books and by all accounts it was quite a success. By my count there were well over 165 events and more than 75 different locations involved. We saw a variety of different brewers, brewery reps and owners all over town from Goodyear to Apache Junction. From the unofficial start at Whole Foods Chandler on the Friday night before Strong Beer when Great Divide kicked off the festivities, to the final bicycle pub crawl in Tempe on the last Sunday, craft beer lovers in Arizona had a wonderful opportunity to sample beers, pair beer and food, meet people, sample beers, experience rare beers and, oh yes, sample beers. Let’s take a look at a couple of highlights. Saturday morning brought kegs and eggs events to several places as a preliminary event to the Strong Beer Festival. This became especially important considering a little extra nourishment sure came

There was plenty of rain and wind, and more than enough beer to go around at Steele Indian School Park on Saturday as approximately 2800 people braved the harsh Arizona winter to sip on some of the most outstanding beers to ever grace a festival in the state. There were beers of all varieties including one off specialties, barrel aged ciders that were meant to be one off and took on a life of their own, rare beers that never saw the light of day in our state before and may never do so again, and even a couple of old favorites thrown in so that festival goers could take a minute to reset their palates. We discussed some early highlights last week, but we’ll touch on them again. Sunday brought three great events including Boulders on Broadway’s Beer Festival where about 30 different beers were offered to a much smaller group of people…and this was indoors. At about the same time, SanTan Brewing

and Ska Brewing hosted a pub crawl on bicycles. Over 125 people turned out for this event which hit four stops where each rider enjoyed a beer from one of the two breweries. Sunday night saw Redstone and Trader Vic’s combine on a unique event, a mead dinner. Various varieties of Redstone’s fine honey wine were paired with dishes from the kitchen of Chef Justin Pfeilsticker and each of them was superb. Monday was the quietest day of the week, but the Alaskan Brewing Beer Dinner at the Hilton in Chandler was a nice way to end the first day of the work week. Sampling and promotional events at Whole Foods, BevMo, Buffalo Wild Wings and TT Roadhouse also helped ease away Monday’s blues.

other key event was a tasting of the entire La Trappe lineup at Lost Leaf Gallery in downtown Phoenix. This event was so solid that Sean Knoll of Artisanal Imports ended up staying well past the stated 9:00 pm end time to enjoy beers with several of the many folks who showed up. Sean also introduced Arizona to the first of the La Trappe barrel program beers. This time we sampled Batch 3 which was La Trappe Quadrupel aged in Port and Sherry barrels. Other fun events included a Global Imports tasting where Troubadour Magma was a big hit along with Petrus Aged Pale…both on draft. The night kept delivering with events at Hungry Monk and a Left Hand Brewing Beer Dinner at La Bocca.

Tuesday featured two really well attended events including CANdemonium at Papago featuring canned beer from Ska, Big Sky and Breckenridge. There were also prizes available for folks that returned their cans to the front and crushed them for proper recycling. The

...continued from Page 14 hand to discuss the process of blending Flemish Sours and then allowed the attendees to sample various blends of Flemish Sour including 100% young beer and 100% aged beer. He also had a little for the Barrel Aged La Trappe Quad and a not yet available in Arizona Belgian Blonde from Omer. Sours were the order of the night as Papago offered rare beers from New Belgium, each of which had a sour component to them. La Folie, Trans-Atlantique Kriek, Imperial Berliner Weisse and the collaboration with Allagash, Vrienden were all available… and all delicious. Look for sour beers to be one of the next hot trends in the beer world, as evidenced by the success of these two events. But it didn’t end there, no less than three beer dinners were going on including one at Atlas Bistro featuring a vegetarian menu paired with Papago’s beers. Sun Up Brewing hosted the first of three Girls Pint Out events along with Crispin and just about every major beer bar in the Valley had an event going on, including a Breckenridge Tasting, followed by Global Imports at Handlebar Pub, Lost Coast at Sun Devil Liquors, and Ballast Point at Whole Foods on Mayo Boulevard. Thursday was another evening of deci-

sions featuring promotional events all over town including a Drink Local sampling at AJ’s Fine Foods on Lincoln, Alaskan at Handlebar Pub, Left Hand at Whole Foods Chandler and Ballast Point at Chop N Wok. But the winners for the night included the Bell’s Beer Dinner at Atlas Bistro. Marty Compton from Bell’s was, as always, entertaining and informative and the food and beer pairings just got better and better. Girls Pint Out also offered a beer dinner at Taggia featuring all strong beers. Nothing less than 8% hit the table for this spectacular. But the event that everyone was waiting for did not disappoint. Taste of Tops had a day long Local Tap Takeover as all 24 of their taps were switched over to beers from Arizona breweries. Coupled with an extension permit which enabled owner Greg Eccles to take over the alleyway out back, there was more than enough beer and more than enough space for everybody. The local brewers, realizing that it was their time to shine alongside their brethren, didn’t just send their usual. There were special offerings from every brewery in attendance. The only regret is that there wasn’t enough time to sample everything. Friday was full of big events…again too many to choose from and not miss out on

something spectacular. But we tried anyway. You could almost make it all work if you started your evening out at Moto at 4:00 for Big IPA Night. With offerings from Ballast Point, Bell’s, Moylan’s, Redstone and more, this was the place for hop heads. After sampling a few there, you could then slip down to Sun Up Brewing for a taste of their Barrel Aged Imperial Cherry Vanilla Stout…on cask. Not much time to linger over another of their fine beers. Next stop created a real decision. Do you head to Papago for their Roll Out the Barrel event, featuring a dozen or so barrel aged beers, or do you head down to Taste of Tops for the Alaskan Smoked Porter Vertical tasting featuring five different vintages? Tough call, but either way you couldn’t lose. That all geared up to what proved to be the culinary event of the week, The Epicuriad. Hosted by the Beer For Brains Foundation, this event was everything it was expected to be. Food from some of the best chefs in the state, fine wines and outstanding beers. Chef Beau MacMillan won first prize for best pairing with food and wine, but it was a close contest, as each entry was spectacular. Music from Joe Myers along with some amazing silent auction prizes rounded out the event.

Saturday was the day that all the local breweries headed to the Peublo Winterfest in Tucson. Locally things were quiet as events were minimal. Bell’s had a nice event at Hungry Monk and Left Hand made an appearance at Handlebar Pub, but all in all, people were in recovery mode. Sunday was the finish to the week with a Tempe bicycle pub crawl highlighting Tavern on Mill, Taste of Tops, Crave and Boulders on Broadway. It was a nice way to wind down from the week. The week was amazing with special recognition to local breweries Sun Up, SanTan and Four Peaks for having the largest number of events for a brewery; Whole Foods Chandler for hosting the largest number of events; Breckenridge and Alaskan for being the out of state breweries with the most events and Doug Odell for reminding us that craft beer is a community as he made visits to many events not involving his brewery.

THE CACTUS LEAGUE: A Look Back at History From 1972-1974, the Swingin’ A’s led by legendary ballplayers Reggie Jackson, Rollie Fingers and Catfish Hunter won three straight World Series, becoming the very first Cactus League team to win the championship since the 1954 Giants. To date, no other team has won three world titles in a row since the A’s great feat. For nearly a decade the Cactus League consisted of only eight teams: The Angels trained in Mesa, playing home games the last two weeks of Spring Training in Palm Springs; the Cubs reunited in Mesa; the Indians trained in Tucson; the Brewers were in Chandler; the A’s in Phoenix; the Padres in Yuma; the Giants in Scottsdale; and the Mariners in Tempe. The Cactus League began to grow and officially take shape in the late 1980’s as new ballparks were erected in Peoria, where the Mariners and Padres entered a cooperative effort, and in Mesa, where the Cubs are guaranteed to remain for another generation. Hi Corbett Field was refurbished for the Colorado Rockies. And, in the spring of 1998, brand new Maryvale Baseball Park became the home of the Brewers while brand new Tucson Electric Park became the home of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago White Sox. In 2003, the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers entered a cooperative effort to share a facility in the city of Surprise. With these additions, Arizona’s spring training circuit reached a new high water mark with twelve teams playing in nine ballparks across the state. Cactus League Notables

Florida’s Grapefruit League has been saddled with the problems of extensive travel, wet weather and older facilities. Only the Diamondbacks and Rockies, who train in Tucson, present a lengthy drive. The 12 Valley teams are all within about an hour of each other.

The White Sox relocated from Tucson to Camelback Ranch Glendale this spring, joining the newly arrived Los Angeles Dodgers at the new $80 million baseball complex off West Camelback Road. Goodyear has brought the Cleveland Indians back to Arizona after a 16-year hiatus in Florida’s Grapefruit League. Arizona has swamped Florida’s 16-team spring league the past 11 years, luring five teams to the Cactus League, with No. 6, the Cincinnati Reds, coming next year to share the Goodyear ballpark. Good weather, short travel times and hundreds of millions of dollars in new baseball facilities have paid dividends for the Cactus League, which also added the expansion Colorado Rockies and Diamondbacks in the 1990s. The Dodgers and Indians will bring some impressive new stars to the Cactus League, including reigning American League Cy Young winner Cliff Lee from Cleveland, Andre Ethier and possibly Manny Ramirez from Los Angeles. Cactus League Attendance is likely to top last year’s record of 1.3 million despite economic and travel turmoil. Valley baseball fans will also have a chance to see nearly two dozen World Baseball Classic exhibition games in the Cactus League stadiums in early March. Good seats at spring games are far cheaper than for regular-season games, and the weather is better. There will be a much greater availability of games and tickets, even on weekends when sellouts in past years often limited options for seeing a game. Now there will be as many as seven games in the Valley a day.

Attendance on the Rise

Arizona’s Cactus League attracted a record 1.32 million fans last spring. League officials expect to top that with three new teams in the Valley, two of them from Florida’s Grapefruit League, and a 37 percent increase in games. Here are last season’s top five Arizona teams by attendance and a look at how the new arrivals did last year:

1. Chicago Cubs: 181,280. 2. San Francisco Giants: 149,935. 3. Seattle Mariners: 135,146. 4. Los Angeles Angels: 118,191. 5. Diamondbacks: 110,894.

D’Arcy McGee’s Irish Pub in Tempe to Celebrate St. Patty’s Day in Style March 17th festivities at Tempe Marketplace include traditional celebration and Official Flogging Molly After-Party D’Arcy McGee’s, a premium Irish pub/ restaurant in Tempe Marketplace, will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in style on Thursday, March 17, 2011, beginning at 5 p.m. and continuing until 2 a.m. The restaurant and pub has received a special use permit from Tempe Marketplace for a fenced party area in the parking lot adjacent to the restaurant. Celebrating Ricky Nelson’s Legacy Matthew and Gunnar Nelson were barely past their 18th birthdays when their father, teen idol Ricky Nelson, was killed in a plane crash in 1985. Nelson had achieved success through his self-portrayal in the series The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, which revealed Nelson’s musical abilities and turned him into a teen idol. Matthew and Gunnar followed in their father’s footsteps, with a musical career that is entering its third decade, but Gunnar and Matthew have taken a slight detour recently. Playing to sold-out audiences, Ricky Nelson Remembered is the Nelson twins’ unique tribute to one of the most influential members of rock history – their dad. What started out as a fan request to play some of their father’s songs has blossomed into a multimedia event, described by Gunnar as a “high energy rock concert meets an A&E biography episode. We wanted to use the opportunity of the 25th anniversary to really jog people’s memories and put them in a place in time where, if they grew up with the Nelson family show, they felt ten feet tall and bullet proof, and if they didn’t, we would educate them as to why the music that is in their iPod actually sounds like it does.” This 90 minute show features Matthew and Gunnar performing Nelson’s greatest hits including “Hello Mary Lou”, “Travelin’ Man”, and “Garden Party”, along with footage pulled from 435 Ozzie and Harriet episodes, Behind the Music and countless interviews and biographies, this show includes interview footage from some of the people that Nelson influenced, like Paul McCartney, Fats Domino, Chris Isaak, and Chris Kristofferson. “It’s approached with integrity and sincerity from a couple of guys whose father was their best friend and you can feel that. This is nothing other than a really warm, loving, feeling, and respectful show.” Gunnar and Matthew perform one original song, “Just Once More”, which Gunnar explains, “is about appreciating the people you love while you still have them here. Some of the advice that Dad gave us was to be songwriters first and foremost and that’s what we take pride in doing.
