Like all other National Guard units, the membership of the 108th Army Band is made up of citizen soldiers. These individuals include educators, business people, mechanics, postal employees, students, and many others. The musicians of the 108th Army Band have been brought together by their love of music and their desire to serve their country. Unlike other National Guard units, the Band’s primary responsibility is to promote morale and provide music for the troops. An additional peacetime mission of the band is serving as a public relations arm of the National Guard to the people of Arizona. Meet the Author - B. J. A note caution, be sure the younger ones aren’t trying to catch a peek while you’re enjoying this next chapter!” Grade: B Joseph: “‘A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas’ is sure to be the ‘high’ point of the holiday season. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s famous line in The Terminator (1984) ‘I’ll be back’ was originally scripted as, ‘I’ll come back’! In his latest as the title hints, ‘The Skin I Live In’ examines the obsessions of the outside perceptions viewed, relative to the inner selves we all keep closely guarded. Antonio Banderas and Elena Anaya give ‘tour de force’ performances that are just as mesmerizing as the writer/ director’s style of presentation. To give away any more would truly accentuate the word ‘spoiler’. Suffice it to say, the last sequence is worth the journey to get there…” Grade: B Joseph: “There is no doubt that writer/director Pedro Almodóvar’s new dramatic thriller ‘The Skin I Live In’ is an arthouse flick. After all, the filmmaker covers some fairly unconventional ground. However, it is likely to be too unconventional for the typical moviegoers who tend to patronize such theaters. On the other hand, one of the synonyms for unconventional is unique. And you cannot get any more unique than ‘The Skin I Live In.’ It is unquestionably one of the most freakishly fascinating films of the year. Is your curiosity piqued yet?” Grade: B
‘The Son of No One’ A rookie police officer (Channing Tatum) who once killed a pair of junkies during his youth remains haunted by the incident. Also starring Al Pacino, Juliette Binoche, Tracy Morgan, Katie Holmes and Ray Liotta. Playing exclusively at Harkins Shea 14. (R – 95 minutes) Stan: “For those who relish the often referred to theme of the ‘down & dirty gritty’ police dramas, ‘The Son of No One’ with writer/director Dito Montiel at the helm, and veterans Al Pacino and RayLiotta making the common clichés believable, Channing Tatum in the title role delivers quite a complex character who wrestles with the issues of his past as the present starts to unravel around him. The ‘film noir’ style of the director provides ‘visual eye candy’ as the multitude of meticulous details are allowed to play out.” Grade: C+ Joseph: “Credit goes to ‘The Son of No One’ writer/director Dito Montiel for demonstrating that Channing Tatum can indeed act. However, the movie itself is somewhat of a bastard. That is to say the new crime thriller is a movie mongrel; a mixed breed, so to speak, that has inherited only the most basic traits of the genre – the clichés. Having said that, ‘The Son of No One’s’ story offers nothing new and instead sticks to the stuff we have seen several times before. But at least the tone is unique as Montiel tends to decorate his projects with particularly personal details.” Grade: D

They found a great way into [a genre] that I love, which has films like ‘No Way Out,’ ‘The Parallax View’ and ‘Three Days of the Condor.’ I miss that genre. They don’t make enough of those any more. Plus, I had never shot a gun in a movie or been in a chase scene. I am very proud of playing both characters that are purely good and those that are just putting it on, which is kind of the opposite. But changing it up all of the time is really not the best recipe for success in Hollywood – at least in terms of celebrity. I remember leaving the set of ‘Predators’ - in which I played a serial killer – and, with blood still under my nails, I went to the screening of ‘Valentines Day.’ That is my favorite part of the job and I probably have less money because of it. But I figure that I am relatively young and I like the learning of it. Everything is a learning experience if you are doing different things all of the time.” – Topher Grace

She had not talked to anybody about it before. At first we did a few sessions that were very difficult and emotional, then we took a few months off and did some more. I kept writing. It was an ongoing thing. Six months later she called and said she remembered something else. It would come back to her, bits and pieces at a time.

My friend Steve Bourie (American Casino Guide author) jokes “I told my wife that I lost all our money, but not to worry because it was a good play”.

Whistling Past the Graveyard Not long ago I witnessed a twenty-something burn through over $1,000 on a slot machine in record time. He said, “I just won that money and now it’s gone; easy come, easy go” This guy had a forced smile on his face but it was obvious that he was glossing over a painful situation. He was talking himself into ignoring a probable hazard, hoping for a good outcome, during his play - Mumbling things like, “well, it’s their money” or “I wish I had quit while I was ahead” and so on. If you spend enough time in a casino you’re sure to see lots of whistling past the graveyard. From experience I’ve learned to keep my mouth shut, as should you. Once people decide to make bad choices while gambling it’s best to stay mum; you’ll only exasperate the situation with obvious platitudes. But - what if, horror of horrors, the whistler is you? Is this something you can and should avoid? Without a doubt! Scared Money: It doesn’t matter whether you’re playing a table game or video poker; never ever use money needed to pay bills. Especially in table poker, you’ll be an easy target for those who are good at reading “tells” (quirks that give hints as to the quality of your cards) and they’ll chew you up and spit you out. Good players can quickly home in on those playing over their head. With video poker, slots or any wager for that matter continuing to bet after you’ve blown your budget can be frightening.
Tired: Even if you haven’t been drinking, it’s not much fun when you’re so tired your head is spinning and your back aches. (You could request a massage during poker play at some Arizona casinos, but it will cost you a dollar a minute) More importantly, you’ll miss hitting the machine’s buttons properly while playing video poker, fail to read your opponent’s cards logically during poker and make counting errors playing blackjack - All costly mistakes. Ahead on a Negative Game: This is one of the most overlooked indicators that’s it’s time to call it a day. Anytime you’re ahead in a game with an ER less than 100% is a good time to stop playing. When you include both the cash back for play added to the game’s theoretical return - there are still some positive plays. The casino can well afford to have a couple with video poker since you must have computer-perfect holds, which few can do. However, casinos aren’t charitable organizations so most games have a house advantage. It you’re winning - it’s a good time to walk to your vehicle with a smile on your face and a song in your heart. Summary: I could be smug and say I never whistle past the graveyard while playing, but I’d be lying. All gamblers have done it from time-to-time and the ride home was long and miserable. The real problem is when you go out on a limb and justify your own foolish behavior with predictable regularity. When you’ve just spent several hundred for a “free” Thanksgiving pie it’s time to take a break and make sure there’s money left for the turkey.
Quitting Time: Frequently I’m asked when it’s a good time to stop playing. There are several indicators. Too Much Alcohol: There’s an adage for serious video poker players “Don’t drink and derive”. For those who aren’t into mathematics it’s a play on words. To derive is to deduce after a series of logical steps, as in “deriving” the quadratic formula. Sounds like the well-known slogan “Don’t drink and drive” so it’s a double entendre as well. In short, video poker and other games with a skill component require clear-thinking. How about slots? If you’re drunk it’s unlikely that you’ll make good decisions about when to say “when” increasing the probability that you’ll leave with nothing in your pockets but lint. Bankroll Loss: As I’ve said in the past, you must stop playing once you’ve reached your

From the Great Pyramids to Hoover Dam, no massive, ambitious enterprise has ever come to fruition without a cost paid as much in blood and pain as in money – and the First Transcontinental Railroad is no exception. On Sunday, Nov. 6, AMC premieres “Hell on Wheels,” a period drama set in the traveling den of sin and iniquity – and churches – that accompanied the westward march of the Union Pacific Railroad, starting in Nebraska in the years just after the Civil War (the series actually filmed in Alberta, Canada). Anson Mount stars as former Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon, who’s on a mission to exact revenge on the Union soldiers who murdered his wife. Also starring are Colm Meaney as Thomas “Doc” Durant, inspired by a real character, a businessman and investor who plans to make his fortune from the railroad; rapper Common as recently freed slave Elam Ferguson, seeking to find a place in the world; Dominique McElligott as Lily Bell, the recent widow of a railroad surveyor; Ben Esler and Philip Burke as the young McGinnes brothers; and Eddie Spears as Native American Joseph Black Moon. Conceived during the Civil War and financed with 30-year government bonds and extensive grants of government-owned land, the railroad construction began in 1863 in Sacramento with the Central Pacific Railroad of California. In 1865, after the war ended, the Union Pacific Railroad began building west from Omaha, Neb. Series creators and brothers Tony and Joe Gayton did consider doing both stories in the series, but, says Joe Gayton, “People asked us if we were insane, if we were trying to ... service both of the stories in a one-hour pilot.” One of the goals of the Transcontinental Railroad was to refocus the attention of a nation divided into North and South by working to unite East and West. “It worked in certain ways,” says Mount. “Certainly the men working on it had been trying to kill each other a month or two months or three months before, and suddenly they’re hammering railroad ties together. “You’ve got every color of the rainbow working it, or at least, a lot of nationalities plus the freedmen. So in that sense, it’s basically ... the 19th-century version of ‘We’re going to put a man on the moon,’ and everybody said, ‘OK, let’s go for it.’ ” At the same time the railroad was being built, telegraph cables were also being strung along the route so that newspapers across the nation could keep the public abreast of the progress.

BEER! Thanksgiving and Beer Without question, one of the biggest holidays of the year for eating and drinking is Thanksgiving. Besides the obligatory list of things to be thankful for, the entire day is about eating, drinking and watching football. And it’s not just a standard meal…in some households; dozens of dishes compete with each other for space on both the table and your plate. Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberries, vegetables and so much more take the stage in a dance which has the sole purpose of getting you to loosen your belt and fall asleep in front of the television in the fourth quarter of the last game of the day. Sounds like quite the challenge for somebody wanting to pour the proper beer. Fortunately, there are options that will make it easy to make sure you and your guests have the best beer to pair with your meal. The first key is to not try to find one beer that is all things to all people. You probably won’t pull it off. Instead set up a sampling table somewhere in the vicinity of the dinner table and stock it with a variety of beers to suit a variety of foods. Put out small glasses if you have them and encourage guests to sample the beers in four ounce servings so they can pair multiple beers with the meal. Try some all around good food beers, add in some beers that present a crossover opportunity for the wine drinker, pull out one or two outrageous beers that will be a treat for the adventurous members of your dining group, and top it all of with a couple of dessert and digestif beers. Don’t be concerned if there are those in your crowd that may claim to not like beer. Have some wine available for them, personally I prefer a Pinot Noir and a Riesling with the traditional turkey dinner, but expect them to gravitate towards the beer, just because it is different. If you really want to go all out, make up index cards for each

The first beers to include are the classic food beers, beers that don’t take much imagination to enjoy and pair well with a wide range of food. For these, I recommend staying on the maltier side, although you will need something with a little bit of hops to cut through the richer foods. So let’s go with these:
Next, let’s look at something for the wine drinkers. Here we will go for something with a little more complexity that still will pair with different foods:
New Belgium 1554 This is a darker beer based on an old Brussels recipe. It has a nice touch of sweetness to it but is easy drinking and pairs well with a large variety of food. Don’t let your guests shy away from the color of this beer. Dark is not a flavor.
The Bruery Autumn Maple How can you not include a beer that is actually made with yams? In addition to the yams, this Belgian Strong Dark Ale is brewed with cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, vanilla, molasses, and maple syrup. It will go great with dark meat, stuffing and, of course, yams. Tripel Karmeliet This Belgian Tripel brewed with barley, wheat and oats has layers of flavor that will match just about any

food you choose to serve. The fact that it was named, “The Best Ale in the World” at the World Beer Awards certainly doesn’t hurt. Lost Abbey Red Barn I believe that saisons may be the best overall style in the world to pair with food and this offering from Lost Abbey certainly helps prove the point. It will pair with just about everything on the table and works great as an aperitif as well. For something different, try the slightly earthier Avant Garde from this brewery instead. How about challenging your guests while still giving them a strong pairing experience? Don’t worry; I have suggestions for those as well. Continued on Page 34...

Ballast Point Sculpin It’s a hop bomb to be sure, but still has a solid malt backbone and will work well with very rich foods, and if you serve blue cheese before or after the meal, its an incredible pairing.

Cantillon Gueuze Tart and refreshing, use this as a palate cleanser for a multi-course meal. It’s perfect just before the main course is served. Cantillon has been tough to find in Arizona recently so any Gueuze will do. Redstone Vanilla Bean Cinnamon Stick Mead Meads are beverages where the primary fermentable is honey. This particular one is named after the natural flavorings added. Try a Black Raspberry, Traditional Mountain Honey Wine or Juniper Mead as well. They are refreshing and a different flavor, especially good with lighter dishes. Crispin The Saint This hard apple cider fermented with Trappist Ale yeast and a hint of organic maple syrup is just right for a non-traditional Thanksgiving dinner. While it pairs well with turkey it really stands out as a complement to a ham dinner. And now for dessert, stay with rich beers the complement the flavors and the richness of the dessert: Sonoran White Chocolate Ale, Breckenridge Vanilla Porter, Left Hand Milk Stout AZWeeklyMagazine.com
All three of these beers go great with desserts and the ingredients in the dish would determine which would be best. For a lighter creamy dessert, go with the White Chocolate Ale, since it’s a wheat beer, it may not stand up to incredibly rich desserts. The Vanilla Porter is perfect with dishes like Crème Brulee or Flan. A lot of pies, especially pecan and pumpkin will go well with this. Finally, chocolate or coffee based desserts (think tiramisu or mocha) deserve Milk Stout. The unfermented sugars along with the roastiness of the stout make it ideal for this situation. Cherish Raspberry or Cherry Lambic Actually any traditionally made lambic will work great with fruit desserts or pies. The underlying tartness from these spontaneously fermented beers provides a nice counter-balance to the sweetness of the dessert. Try to avoid the artificially sweetened lambics out there as they tend to be a bit cloying especially with a sweet dessert. North Coast Old Rasputin Pour it in a snifter and don’t worry about dessert, sit out on the patio and enjoy it. Old Stock Barleywine from North Coast is also a great stand-alone meal finisher. So those are my recommendation for Thanksgiving dinner. No matter what you choose to drink, make sure it goes well with your food. The ability of beer to enhance the dining experience is amazing and it certainly deserves its place at your table. Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy!

Old Rasputin is produced in the tradition of 18th Century English brewers who supplied the court of Russia’s Catherine the Great. It’s an intense brew with big complex flavors and a warming finish. At 9%ABV. and 75 IBUs this beautiful Imperial Stout poursdeep black with a creamy brown head. The aroma on this beer is phenomenal with huge notes of chocolate, leather and toasted malt. Powerful chocolate and malt flavorcarry through on the palate with juts a slight hint of alcohol. Carbonation is robust but and feels silky and smooth. Ratebeer.com gives it a perfect 100 overall score for with 98 points for style.

tUnE-yArDs at Crescent Ballroom Last weekend sure was fun with such an abundance of booze and costumed folk running around. It was definitely one of those Sundays when you think back on the previous night and just remember having a great time but specific conversations and situations are still a bit blurry. When 4:00 on Sunday afternoon rolls around and it’s time to take your second dosage of aspirin, you start recalling the bump and grind session you had with the masked dude in the bunny suit on the dance floor and the not-socute comment you made towards your friend’s dilapidated costume. For a lot of people, the thought of taking another jager and red bull shot starts the flow of that pre-vomit saliva in the back on one’s throat. If you’re one of those people, maybe keeping it low key this weekend will be beneficial to you. If you’re not too keen on the indie, experimental music scene, you may not recognize some of the bands scheduled to perform at downtown Phoenix’s newest music venue, Crescent Ballroom, but know that they’re chosen to perform there for a reason: they’re usually internationally known and there is a local population that is into them and you can be into them too. I went to Crescent Ballroom a few weeks back to see Washed Out, a musician I hadn’t heard of prior to attending but decided to check out anyway since I am attracted to the chillwave genre of music. I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed it and the venue itself. I was impressed that for a $15 cover I was able to be within a foot of the musician himself. The venue has a couple of bars and two rooms—one for the performances, the other a lounge where dancing occurs after the performance when a DJ plays. The ballroom has seating in the rear and an open space before the stage where you can stand around or dance. There’s also a large patio area if smoking is your thing. This Thursday, tUnE-yArDs, a New Englandbased music project will perform. With sounds of the ukulele, electric bass,

saxophone, and vocals, expect a chill show that will help wind down your week, help you forget about Sunday’s hangover, and ready you for the weekend. If not this artist, then definitely check out another one soon—someone plays there every night. Thursday, November 3rd. 7:30 pm. www.crescentphx.com Hammer Time Club Event at Brick Pizzeria and Wine Bar Here’s another chill spot that may help keep away the nausea of last weekend— unless you want it back of course (it is a wine bar after all). Brick is nice because it’s located in the Arizona Center, which gives you the feel of being in a bigger, more urban environment. The food is delicious, the ambience is fresh, and the music is never tired. After your weary feet have finished making their First Friday rounds, consider heading to Brick for some nourishment and inexpensive, good wine. DJ Craig Citizen and guest DJs will play in the lounge from 10 to 2 in case those footsies of yours need to start moving again to some electro and modern indie. All is right with Eddie Kaye Thomas. Best known as Finch in the “American Pie” movies, Thomas also plays David Kaplan, the pal who’s never quite cool enough, in HBO’s “How to Make it in America” Sundays. And he’s in an off-Broadway drama, “The Submission,” playing the lover of a man who writes a play under a false name. “What’s great for Pete’s journey is he is just looking for love and comfort,” Thomas says. “We can love our art so much and be so passionate; good theater, good music, good painting – it’s so tragic how those things can step on your personal life.” Yet this confluence of his art is all Thomas has ever wanted. “It’s very much like this is the moment I have been waiting for,” Thomas says. “I have been doing this since I was little. So much time is spent hoping for things and wanting the next thing. For me, and a lot of other actors, it is a tough balance to find aspirations and hopes and at the same time, the contentment. I feel that right now. “I have a great TV show on air, and I get to do a play every night,” he says. “It just gets me excited for possibilities in the future.” Thomas never plotted a career. A Manhattan native, he began in a city-run program. It’s Monday, so I can do the New York Times crossword puzzle. And I am going to go see ‘Moneyball’. And maybe some Monday Night Football.”

Now if you are quite a ways out of town, let’s say: Surprise, then Rio Mirage is a place I highly recommend going to. They claim the atmosphere will keep you coming back, and they are true to their word. As soon as you walk in you will notice the exquisite hand crafted décor that just invites you in. There are paintings of Mexican scenery on almost every wall; I love it! Happy hour is MondaySaturday 2pm-7pm and I couldn’t help but get a margarita. It is their house specialty, AND half off, so I was about it. The draft beers are only two dollars and three dollar well drinks.
