‘Live!’ one last time

By Jay BoBBin

Regis Philbin

On a recent morning at New York’s WABC-TV, during a “Live! With Regis and Kelly” commercial break, Regis Philbin obliges a rather statuesque audience member by going over to her and having their picture taken. Still seated on the set, co-host Kelly Ripa playfully chides him for not minding that request too much. And Philbin shouts back to her, with his patented mock exasperation, “Can’t a guy have a little fun before he goes?” The three-time Daytime Emmy winner has had more than a little fun for a lot of weekdays – but now it’s time for that schedule to be in his past. Stressing it’s more for “redirection” than retirement, Philbin marks his final episode of the syndicated “Live!” Friday, Nov. 18.

“I thought I was getting out of here at the end of my contract, which was in August,” he says in a post-show conversation in his memorabiliapacked office upstairs from the studio. “Then suddenly, they wanted three more months. I guess to go into the November sweeps. I said, ‘Well, OK, fine,’ and the weight of it all gets a little heavy as we approach what is really the end of the run.” It also wraps up a continuous daytime presence that began in 1975, when Philbin began cohosting “A.M. Los Angeles” with Sarah Purcell (later of “Real People”), then with Cyndy Garvey. In 1981, he joined future “Entertainment Tonight” staple Mary Hart on a short-lived NBC program, then reteamed with Garvey in New York for “The Morning Show.” Ann Abernathy succeeded her, and then came Kathie Lee (Johnson) Gifford ... and “The Morning Show” was renamed “Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee” in 1988, to be amended in 2001 when Ripa came aboard. Philbin had an earlier San Diego morning show of his own and became Joey Bishop’s ABC late-night sidekick, and he believes he knows the key to his longevity. “I have always tried to use the little stories that come up in my life,” he reflects, “and turn them into something funny or entertaining. It’s the only thing I’ve got, frankly. I’ve never had writers.”

Tickets are available online at www. ScottsdalePerformingArts.org or through the Patron Services Box Office at (480) 499-TKTS (8587). Celebrating their 30th anniversary, the Washington, D.C.-based Capitol Steps are an annual Thanksgiving weekend tradition at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. Set to popular music, the group’s political satire pokes fun at all sides of the issues, from left to right. With election season in full swing and the whiff of fresh scandal in the air, there is never a shortage of material for the Steps’ wickedly irreverent songs and skits.

Depending on the latest headlines, the Steps will perform selections from their up-to-the-minute repertoire, including numbers from their latest album, Desperate Housemembers, with possible ‘guest appearances’ by President Barack Obama, Speaker of the House John Boehner, assorted presidential candidates and Wasilla/ Scottsdale snowbird Sarah Palin, among many others. The Capitol Steps begin in 1981 at a Christmas party in the office of former Senator Charles Percy. Like most things in Congress, they never knew when to stop. During the past 30 years, The Capitol Steps have recorded 31 albums and appeared on Good Morning America, The Today Show, 20/20, Entertainment Tonight, Nightline, CNN’s Inside Politics and dozens of times on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered. For the past 20 years, the Steps have produced quarterly specials for public radio and have been featured in three national specials for public television. They also have performed for five U.S. presidents. (Six if you include Hillary.) Many of the performers have worked on Capitol Hill, some for Republicans,

some for Democrats and some for members who sit firmly on the fence. In fact, the current cast of The Capitol Steps has at one time or another infested the offices of 11 U.S. senators and seven members of the House of Representatives. Most of these politicians have since been defeated or placed under investigation.

Having said that, the movie’s depiction of a young person’s tendency to allow the hungers of their heart to render the warnings of their brain null and void, while unfortunately grounded in reality, is sure to frustrate viewers. However, another look at the film’s title reveals that this very well may be the entire point of ‘Like Crazy,’ which suggests that pain and passion are two sides of the same coin.” Grade: B

‘A Lonely Place to Die’ Five mountaineers (Melissa George) stumble into a vicious kidnapping scheme after they rescue a child they find buried alive in the Scottish Highlands. Playing exclusively at The Royale. (NR – 98 minutes) Randy: “With breathtakingly gorgeous scenery, a talented cast and a surprisingly intense plot, ‘A Lonely Place to Die’ is a top-notch thriller. From the opening rock climbing scene, to the ensuing chase through the wilderness, this small film will leave you on the edge of your seat. Watch the credits all the way through to see home video footage shot by the cast and crew.” Grade: B+

Soundbite Spotlight The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly En-

tertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf movies recently released in theaters.

catch me in the corner and come back to Felicity, so the scenes are always changing and very free and natural.

Actors Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones (‘Like Crazy’)

It definitely came across as honest, when you throw yourself into a role so much; you have to remind yourself, especially with this film, that it is just a role. When you play a scene that’s one of those ‘gut wrenching’ heart felt scenes, after you’re done with it you find yourself feeling kind of ‘yucky’ about it and you certainly have to remind yourself this isn’t really happening to me, it’s the character’s life, and this film has many of those moments for both of the main characters.” – Anton Yelchin

By Stan Robinson “Drake [Doremusthe director] doesn’t call ‘action’ or ‘cut’, there were no ‘final touches’ [hair & makeup tweaks just before shooting a scene] and he didn’t let wardrobe or makeup on set, it was just us and the camera operator. We would be hanging out, outside of a scene and he (camera operator) would be rolling (shooting). The takes were long, about 15 minutes and we shot single camera and with the long takes sometimes he (camera operator) would start a shot on Felicity, follow her through a room, leave for a moment,

“As actorsin ‘Like Crazy’ we didn’t ‘switch on and off’ with the calls of ‘action and cut’ for the scenes, we immersed ourselves in those characters, we just jumped into it and remained in those character situations throughout the film. Since it’s a documentary

Rehearsal time was vital because with a film like this the three of us [actors & director] had to completely trust each other, so we needed the rehearsal time to know that we could take risks, and that we wouldn’t suffer from taking any risks. It clicked as soon as we met it felt like it was immediately very easy and we all had very similar aims about what kind of movie we wanted to make, we wanted to make a film that the audience would feel that they were with the characters in this relationship, it had to be totally real, you couldn’t fake it or pretend, it had to feel honest and that’s what we tried to achieve.” – Felicity Jones

heart-warming musical is the perfect holiday treat for everyone. For more information, call the box office at 623.776.8400 or visit azbroadway. org

A Chorus Line will be on stage at ABT through November 17. Next up, celebrate the holiday season with Miracle on 34th Street opening November 25. Meredith Willson, the author of The Music Man and The Unsinkable Molly Brown, sets to music the classic story of an elderly gentleman (hired to play Santa Claus at Macy’s) who claims that he really is Santa Claus. ABT UNVEILS A NEW DINING MENU TO RAVE REVIEWS The Meaning Behind “Dinner Theatre Redefined” Arizona Broadway Theatre has officially announced the unveiling of a new dining menu. The new menu, introduced as part of opening night for the 2011 – 2012 Season, presents an array of mouth-watering selections that have received remarkable reviews. “The menu recreation was initiated as a response to a survey we created for 18,000 of our patrons. The survey asked a variety of questions about the theatre and encouraged constructive answers and suggestions,” said ABT’s Executive Producer, Kiel Klaphake. “We were both surprised and pleased at the number of responses.” The “Dinner Theatre Redefined” tagline suggests a distinctive difference between ABT and other dinner theatre experiences. “The ‘redefined’ experience encompasses many factors: ticket purchase, parking, building aesthetics and ambiance, staff professionalism, dining options, theatrical performance and much more,” states Brad York, ABT’s Sales and Marketing Director. “It is all about the details. So much goes into mounting a theatrical production like A Chorus Line - the countless hours perfecting

precision and choreography, creating the artistic aspects with set and lighting design, and the live band that accompanies every musical. In a parallel fashion the culinary team at ABT works diligently to bring the same level of precision to the tables of our dining room by designing a specialty menu of appetizers, entrées and desserts to complement each production,” continued York. “Where other theatres may enlighten the senses of sight and sound, it’s a special treat here at ABT that we can entice one’s sense of taste.”

New appetizers introduced for A Chorus Line include ProsciuttoWrapped Scallops lightly sautéed in a lemon-wine sauce, plated with fresh tomato garlic relish and lemon basil beurre blanc, Pan-Fried Crab Cakes prepared with a tangy lemon pepper sauce and Creamy Spinach & Artichoke Dip served with toasted baguettes, carrots and celery sticks. A few of the tasty new entrées include Tournedos Rossini, two tenderloin beef medallions cooked to perfection, served with asparagus, topped with a distinctive mushroom demi-glace and served with seasoned red roasted potatoes. BEER!

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” mussels with pasta and the honey, lager glazed barbecue chicken. The resort chef truly outdid himself this evening.

REFLECTING BACK ON A TRULY RARE AFFAIR

an understanding about this disease which, in some forms, kills most of its victims in less than thirteen months.

It has been over a day and I am still recovering from RAREaffair, the Beer for Brains Foundation’s signature event that took place this past Saturday at Talking Stick Resort. It wasn’t my intent to write about the event, there has been enough said already. But when an event like this resonates so strongly with the Arizona beer community, it seems as if it demands to be commented on.

From the moment you pulled into the resort and saw the Beer for Brains logo on the marquee just off Loop 101, until you wearily called it a night, the event delivered as promised. We’ll get to the beer later, but first, some of the other highlights. The food was amazing as several local restaurants pitched in to offer sampling plates for the general admission attendees. Jim Lolli from The Hungry Monk was there to serve pulled pork sliders. His Chandler based restaurant has always been a big supporter of the Foundation, and he was coming off of his own big event, Hoptoberfest, held the previous weekend. The Hungry Monk has earned its reputation as a top craft beer bar. Bryan’s Barbecue from Cave Creek made the trip with a variety of barbecued treats making it easy to understand how this little restaurant is considered one of the top barbecue places in the Valley. There were also offerings from Brio, Rico’s, Whole Foods, DeFalco’s and more. Brio even donated a portion of its sales at all of their Valley restaurants to the event. The VIP food was even more spectacular, almost everything cooked with beer. Highlights were the IPA and garlic steamed little neck clams and

First off, just about everybody who is anybody in the Phoenix beer world seemed to be in attendance. Brewers, distributors, buyers and beer geeks all joined together with regular folks who wanted to support a great cause. And support they did, almost 900 people filled the Fire Garden at Talking Stick to celebrate with a rare collection of around 80 beers, along with outstanding spirits and excellent wines. Despite the atmosphere of a great party, the true purpose of the event was close at hand. Foundation founder, Louis Dolgoff lost his wife Laurie to brain cancer just over two years ago and since then has been on a mission to raise money for brain cancer research. By the end of the night, attendees had a great time, raised lots of money for research, and, perhaps, came away with a little bit of

Wine and spirits were offered too and were also a great selection for a great evening. Cruz Tequila was in full force offering both the platinum and reposado brands. Phoenix based Arroyo Vodka was offering up their Apple Pye Liquor (don’t call it vodka) and they seemed to have a pretty steady following. If you were a whiskey drinker, the event was a special treat as well. Some very nice offerings from Kentucky Bourbon Distillers were on hand, including Rowan Creek Bourbon; and Sazerac sent bottles of Eagle Rare, Buffalo Trace and more. The Willet Pot Still Bourbon was also wonderful as was the Balvenie 14 scotch.

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Alas, the latter two were VIP only features. I am not much of a tequila or vodka drinker, but I understand from those who are, that there were some wonderful selections of these products as well. Wine drinkers were also happy at this event as a large selection, including some very nice champagnes was available. But really, the event was about the beer which surpassed all expectations. Upon arrival, a guest discovered that there were tables set up all around the large fountain, all pouring various draft beers, and across the walkway were several tables offering a variety of package products. The big question was where to start. It really didn’t matter as every table held a treat, and there Continued on Page 30...

was more than enough beer to keep long lines from forming.

November 10th, 2011 - November 16th, 2011

Let’s look at some highlights of the evening. One of the biggest hits was the firkin of Mango Habanero IPA from Odell Brewing that was being poured for the evening. There were people that didn’t like IPAs, didn’t like mangos, and despised spicy foods lining up for a second sample of this special beer. Not to be outdone, local favorites Four Peaks , SanTan Brewing, Sun Up, Thunder Canyon and Sonoran all introduced great beers, including some beers that were just being release for the first time outside of their respective breweries. Whether your selection was the Pumpkin Spice from Sonoran, Big Red Vibe from Thunder Canyon, the Scotch Ale from Sun Up, A Raisin to Live from SanTan or the Barrel Aged Sirius Imperial Stout from Four Peaks. Papago Brewing also released a brand new beer at the event. Belle Epoque, a grisette style beer, was their donation. A Grisette is similar to a farmhouse ale except that it was traditionally brewed to serve to miners. Belle Epoque refers to a period of history starting in the late 1870s and lasting until World War I. Ron Kloth of Papago brought another beer as well, a collaboration with Redstone Meadery which was named Laurie’s Sparkle in memory of Laurie Dolgoff whose brave fight with brain cancer was the inspiration for the foundation. There were too many other great beers to name them all, but a few bear notice. Alaskan Brewing’s 2004 vintage Smoked Porter, A. le Coq 2003 and 2001 Imperial Stouts, 2006 J.W. Lee Harvest Ale (including Lagavulin and Calvados aged versions in VIP), 2010 Napa Smith Bonfire and various brands from Michigan based Short’s Brewing all scored big in the bottle section of the event. Draft products including CDA – Black IPA from BJ’s Brewing, OldeBluehairBarleywine from Big Sky, Stranahan Whiskey Barrel Aged Vanilla Porter from Breckenridge, Deschutes The Dissident and The Stoic, Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA, Full Sail AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Black Gold Bourbon Street, Pink Killer from Silly, Leinenkugel Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout, Sierra Nevada Ovila Saison, Fresh hop favorite Hoperation Ivy from Ska Brewing, and Great Divide’s Oak Aged Chocolate Yeti Imperial Stout were just a few of the impressive offerings surrounding the fountain. You can still check out at a complete list at the Beer for Brains web site (www.bfbf.org). Read it and weep if you weren’t there. Presentations were made and awards given. These included very nice remarks from Cindy Oehme, whose Oehme Foundation was the main sponsor of the event. Her husband Rick is a four plus year survivor of the most devastating form of brain cancer, GBM, an almost unheard of number. Deni Austin, a six and one half year GBM survivor also spoke and her story was also inspirational. The presentation of the Laurie R. Dolgoff Humanitarian Award was made, and Breckenridge Brewery and Todd Thibault won that award for their incredible efforts in putting together the Colorado Affair, held during the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. At the end of the night, board member and Laurie Dolgoff’s husband, Louis had his head shaved and the Beer for Brains logo airbrushed on to his head. He matched a dozen or so other bald gents by the front of the stage whom had the logo airbrushed on their head as well. This group included Whole Foods Chandler’s resident beer expert, James Swann. The Beer Bloke (his nom de plume) was on hand to provide expert insight into the beers being served and assist those who were less familiar with this special lineup in finding the right beer. All in all, this was an amazing event. The final numbers are still being tallied, but there is no question that it was an unqualified success. The next event for this two year old group is the Epicuriad to be held sometime this winter or spring. It features an Olympics of sort, featuring restaurants preparing dishes designed to pair with a designated wine and beer. We look forward to that one as well.

Hello everyone, this weekend has been a crazy one what with National Stout Day, Flanny’s One Year Anniversary & The Beer for Brains Rare Affair Fund Raiser. Who went to every one of these Beer related events & got absolutely NOTHING else done? THIS GUY!

Hey! It’s Fresh Hop Beer Season By “King” James Swann

I must be getting old because recovery is a BITCH! Having said so, the old saying goes: When you fall off the Horse you must climb back on quickly. So let’s chat today about Fresh Hop Beers. The term “Fresh Hop” refers to beers brewed with fresh full hop cones as opposed dried hop pellets. I must point out that brewing Fresh Hop beers take up to 5 times the hop volume as compared to brewing with conventional pellets. Difficult to Brew and even more difficult to Filter, producing these beers requires patience and total dedication to the craft. So here we go, my favorite 3 Fresh Hop Beers of the season (So Far). High Tide from Port Brewing. A seasonal west coast style IPA brewed and dry hopped with freshly harvested Centennial and Simcoe flower hops. Big, bright, hop-balanced citrus flavor and very little else. 99 points on Ratebeer.com. & 6.5% ABV. There wasn’t much of this little gem distributed to AZ this year so if you happen upon it, Buy All of it! Lupulin Pale Ale from Full Sail Brewing. Using only Brewer’s Gold to wet hop, kettle hop, hop back and dry hop, this very seasonable single hop pale ale contains 90 IBUs sits at 6% ABV. It features a medium-light body with lots of bright peppery bitter flavour ever so delicately balanced by just the right amount of caramel malt. Fresh Hop by Great Divide. An American pale ale with moderate hop bitterness marked by a unique and intensely grassy hop flavor and aroma. Fresh Hop is a refreshing, medium bodied, light-copper colored pale ale weighing in at 55 IBUs and 6.1% ABV. Again very hard to find here in AZ. but well worth seeking out.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeverages.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Odd as it is, these beers tend to appear in the autumn months but pair wonderfully with summer & spring foods. That huge hotdog at the ballpark smothered in relish, onion and mustard comes to mind. Another great pairing would be a Sub Sandwich with Italian meats, cheeses and lots of fresh vegetables. Simple foods that just make you feel good. As always, keep sending those comments to kingjamesswann@gmail.com and don’t forget that Commando is a Frame of Mind!!! Cheers.

Stephen Stills With Very Special Guest Pegi Young Tuesday, November 15th at Celebrity Theatre Stephen Stills has influenced generations of music buffs and musicians alike with his powerful voice, songwriting artistry, and passionate guitar playing, both as a solo artist and as a member of Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills,

Stills is the only artist ever to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice in the same night - for Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills & Nash. In addition to being ranked 28th on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, Stills also has a trio of album masterpieces on their compendium of The 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time: Again (Buffalo Springfield), Déjà Vu (CSN&Y) and CSN. Still recording and touring as a solo artist and with CSN, CSN&Y and Buffalo Springfield, Stills’ landmark career just keeps on moving. Fans can expect Stills’ November performance to be heavy on hits, lost gems and maybe even some surprise covers!

Pegi Young is gearing up for the November 14th release of her third solo album Bracing For Impact. Young initially came to the public’s attention through her longstanding role as backup singer with Neil Young, her husband of three decades. The couple recently hosted the 25th Anniversary Bridge School Benefit Concert in Mountain View, California; a school the Young family established for their son Ben and other children with severe physical impairments. This year, the event featured such marquee names as Arcade Fire,

Eddie Vedder and Dave Matthews. To mark the occasion, there is a new three-DVD, two-CD set stuffed with highlights from past concerts. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets ($40 and $50) are still available at Celebrity Theatre or online at www. celebritytheatre.com. To charge by phone, call 602-267-1600 ext.1. GAME! SECTION By Ryan Clouse

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim X360, PS3, PC/$59.99/Available Now “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” is an action/role-playing game that uses open-world environments and detailed stories to immerse and entertain fantasy fans. Creating your would-be hero isn’t like other RPGs, concentrating on gameplay as a means for defining your character rather than specifying it ahead of time. This allows you to break free of cliche molds such as warrior or mage and create any type of hero you wish based solely on your actions. As you progress through the game, you will also be able to build your abilities using perk trees, which grant helpful skills such as Turn Undead or Shield Bash. It must be noted that “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” possesses some of the most stunning landscapes seen in a video game to date. Where most 3-D action games show silhouetted mountains as a backdrop with recycled backgrounds and buildings littering the countryside, Bethesda has utilized a game engine that allows you to wander across any piece of land you can see, including far-off mountain ranges, and creates unique buildings for every town, village and city you choose to explore.

“DIY with No Mess” Everyone loves a little quality time outside; at least I do. At the Monastery you can enjoy a BBQ without having to worry about cleaning up after you and your friends. You buy raw meat and cook it on their grills while having drinks and laughs. They have volleyball courts, horseshoes, and life size checkers! A giant playground for adults sounds like good fun for you and your friends. The happy hour is MondayFriday from 3pm-7pm where you can get even more goodies with: $2 drafts, $3.75 wine, along with free peanuts and popcorn. 4810 E. McKellips Mesa, AZ 85215 “Easy to Miss, but Not to Forget” There is a new place in Oldtown and I kept walking by saying, “When did this get here? It looks pretty cool.” The atmosphere focuses on the color of lime green and black for the interior. Limelight Dipping Bar and Grill is the new place that was once, My Big Fat Greek Restaurant. They get this name for their 15 house-made dipping sauces for any dish that you order. It has become pretty obvious that I am a fan of spicy food, and their Lava Burger is a dish that I will go back for again, stuffed with habaneros and layered with a ghost pepper sauce! Yum! Their happy hour consists of $3 wines, beers, half off signature drinks, and $5 appetizers! Need a late night snack? This place is open until 3am on the weekends and until midnight during the week to satisfy your hunger. 4218 N. Scottsdale Rd. Scottsdale, AZ 85251

The Night Owl BY EVELYN ROMANS

Project Ethos at The Mint Essential, Focus, Rescue and Revive—all flavors of a drink that somehow makes us feel rejuvenated. Vitamin Water is probably one of the best and most successful lines of drinks out there right now and I’m sure I’m not the only one who buys it for their names, tastes, and small vitamin doses. Hey, it’s better than purchasing a coke, right?! Vitamin Water Zero will sponsor a night of music, art, and fashion one last time this year. This event is the last of eight that has taken place nationwide and will be held at one of Scottsdale’s newest lounges, The Mint. For all you Scottsdale goers, you should already know that The Mint is money— you can bank on having a good time there. Help celebrate creativity this Friday when Project Ethos highlights local artists and fashion designers whose art and apparel will be showcased all night while music by Anjulie creates a vibe you can get down to. Four local designers will dress models in their finest garb so you can stare and judge their creations. Each designer also has the task of impressing you with a Vitamin flavor-inspired design that you can vote on via text that night. If staring at beautiful models isn’t enough flavor for you, you also have the opportunity to appreciate (or at least criticize) some local artist pieces which will be on display all night. If you don’t like the pieces straight away, I’m betting you’ll enjoy them more after a few drinks when things start to get trippy. Either way, Friday night in Scottsdale is going to be a little more interesting this week and you’ll have more to talk about the next morning when you discuss last night’s escapades with your buddies at breakfast. Friday, November 11th. 8 – 10 pm. $15 Presale at www.projectethos.com. Ages 21+ Office Space Party at the Sail Inn It’s Thursday and you’re about to explode because your boss is getting on your case about being more avant-garde with your

spreadsheet data and the lady who sits in the cubicle next to you goes off tangent every time you ask her a simple question and all you want to do is tell her to shut the F up but you won’t because you’re polite. By the end of the day, you’re ready for a vodka drink and a foot massage to get you through the butt end of the week. By now, you may have come to realize that the scenes in Office Space are very similar to the situations that go on in your own work environment. The people at Sail Inn realize this too and want to help you embrace the slight if not massive hate you have toward your place of employment by having a shindig at their bar in Tempe. We spend most of our lives in our work clothes so might as well wear the same outfit you wore earlier in the day to this event and get $5 off the general $10 cover. Flaunt your business casual outfit or wear your pieces of flair proudly as workers unite to drink their sorrows away and listen to some live music by Cait Brennan, Los Guys, Mojo Farmers, and Only Warning. Don’t forget to drink at least three full glasses of water before bed so you can function at the office in the morning.Thursday, November 10th. 8 pm. www.thesailinn.com Ages 21+
