DISCOVER THE MAGIC OF BRIGADOON! A brand new production of Brigadoon opened at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre on Friday, December 30 and plays through February 11, 2012. Set in the Scottish Highlands, in the spring of 1935, this lavish production features a beautiful Lerner and Loewe score, including the songs Almost Like Being In Love, Come to Me, Bend to Me and I’ll Go Home with Bonnie Jean. Brigadoon tells the story of a mysterious Scottish village that materializes for only one day every one hundred years, though to the villagers the passing of each century seems no longer than one night. The enchantment is viewed by them as a blessing rather than a curse, for it

saved the village from destruction. No one from Brigadoon may ever leave, or the enchantment will be broken and all its inhabitants will disappear into the mist forever. Two young American tourists on a hunting trip get lost in the Scottish Highlands. They encounter a small village not on the map, called Brigadoon, in which people harbor a mysterious secret and behave as if they were living two hundred years in the past. They stumble upon the village just as a wedding is about to be celebrated, and their arrival has serious implications for the village’s inhabitants. The original production opened on Broadway in 1947 and ran for 581 performances. The 1954 film version starred Gene Kelly, Cyd Charisse and Van Johnson. Brigadoon is directed by ariZoni award winner M. Seth Reines with choreography by Dottie Lester White. The production features set design by Tom Tutino, costume design by John P. White, lighting design by Russell A. Thompson, orchestrations and musical direction by JR McAlexander, properties by Dominic Lau and sound design by Chris Kockler. The roles of Tommy and Fiona are played by Valley favorites, husband and wife Jason Fleck and Jeannie Shubitz. The role of Jeff is played by Victor Legarreta. The cast also includes Jesse Berger, Alyson Bloom,

Robyn Bydalek, Billy Casey, Michael Dinneen, Maris Fernandes, Jim France, Roy Hunt, Shelley Jenkins, Traci McCormick, Lynx Murphy, Sal Pavia, Mark Richards and Morgan Springer. Bagpipes are hauntingly played by Mesa’s William B. Cooley.

NEW YORK’S JULIANNE SWARTZ AND KEN LANDAUER AT ASU ART MUSEUM The ASU Art Museum’s ongoing Social Studies series continues in 2012 with new work from Julianne Swartz and Ken Landauer, visiting artists from New York. The project is supported by a generous grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The title of Julianne and Ken’s project is Miracle Report. The two artists

will explore the miraculous through people’s perceptions of it in their lives, interviewing students, school children and community members of all ages and backgrounds, and then combine their findings in an installation of fleeting vignettes playing on all of the Museum’s available sound and video equipment. The end result will be, in their words, “some beauty, some hocus-pocus and some unexplainable magic.” The artists’ residency in the Phoenix area lasts six weeks, and the exhibition will open Jan. 21, with an opening reception Jan. 20 from 5 to 7p.m. You can see examples of Julianne’s past projects, including her installation at the 2004 Whitney Biennial in New York City, here: http://www.julianneswartz. com/ Please help us spread the word about the opportunity to be a part of this moving and unusual project. Anyone who would like to share a miracle he or she has experienced is welcome to participate. For more information, contact Nicole Herden, at Nicole. herden@asu.edu.

ARIZONA BROADWAY THEATRE WILL MAKE IT RAIN Singin’ in the Rain Opens Friday, January 6, 2012

the jimmy dorsey orchestra and the pied pipers Swinging songs that topped the Hit Parade.

Arizona Broadway Theatre invites you to experience Hollywood in the 1920’s and enjoy this zany, light-hearted romantic comedy about the waning days of the silent screen era. Singin’ in the Rain focuses on the lead Don Lockwood, his sidekick Cosmo Brown, aspiring actress Kathy Selden, and Lockwood’s leading lady Lina Lamont, whose vocal talent is less than pleasant, making her an unlikely candidate for stardom in talking pictures.

classical pianist alpin hong

Don Lockwood is a silent film star with humble origins as a musician, dancer and stunt man. Don tries to tolerate Lina, who is convinced that their screen romance is real. After the first talking picture becomes a smash hit, the head of the studio decides he has no choice but to convert the new Lockwood and Lamont film, The Dueling Cavalier, into a talking production. The production is overcome with complications, by far the worst being Lina’s amusingly discordant voice.

After a disastrous test screening, Don’s best friend comes up with the idea to overdub Lina’s voice and turn The Dueling Cavalier into The Dancing Cavalier, a musical comedy film. As the show moves forward, Don falls in love with aspiring actress, Kathy Selden, who is providing the voice for Lina. Set in old Hollywood with the everchanging days of film, this popular show is filled with classic songs like “Make ‘Em Laugh,” “Good Mornin’” and, of course, “Singin’ in the Rain.” Singin’ in the Rain runs from January 6 through February 12, 2012. Following Singin’ in the Rain is Sunset Blvd. - winner of the 1995 Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Original Score. Sunset Blvd. is a tragic tale that moves between reality and delusion as the characters discover their place in a world they can’t evade. Chelsea handles prime time with NBC’s Chelsea Handler Are you there, hip, young prime-time viewers longing for something a little less snuggly than ABC’s family-centric Wednesday-night comedy block? ’Cause it’s her. Chelsea. You know, Chelsea Handler – television’s go-to gal for take-no-prisoners late-night chatting? The little-people-loving, boss-dating, Piers Morganfilleting girl grenade on whose show “Chelsea Lately” her now-bosom buddy Jennifer Aniston admitted she appeared so Handler would poke fun to Jen’s face instead of behind her back? Now Handler’s gone prime time with “Are You There, Chelsea?” premiering Wednesday, Jan. 11, on NBC. Letting “That ’70s Show” alum

Laura Prepon have all the fun as man-hungry bar babe Chelsea, Handler instead dons a dark wig and uptight diction to play her own pregnant sister. The half-hour comedy (helmed in part by “The Cosby Show” and “Roseanne” ace Tom Werner) is based on “Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea,” Handler’s best-selling homage to well-lubricated bad decisions. Hence, fans of the book should be thrilled to see that her prison experience, lowdown curiosity about red-haired men and leeringly unfiltered papa are all right there in the premiere. Along with a dazzling array of descriptors of, uh, lady parts. But will the average prime-time viewer – ladies especially – be just as thrilled?

The equivalent for a fashion designer is to create an outfit within 24 hours. That’s the concept behind Lifetime’s “24 Hour Catwalk,” premiering Tuesday, Jan. 10. It’s a difficult task, complicated by additional challenges. Aspiring designers face judges, including designer Cynthia Rowley, publicist James LaForce and fashion writer Derek Blasberg. The designers have sample makers who can get the sewing done in record time, but this is a major undertaking, as hopefuls create their own three-piece collections and meet challenges.

Q: When the designers were presented with the weekly challenge, do you immediately start thinking about how you would do it?

A: Every time someone would be eliminated, it was heartbreaking. I made it my business to tell each one of them (that) if I were in such a competition I would fail miserably because I take such a long time to harness my creative thoughts.

Reviewers’ Roundtable The following quotes were pulled from AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists’ full reviews in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of each of this weekend’s new releases.

Randy Montgomery, AZ Weekly Film Critic

Listen to Joseph J. Airdo’s “Movie Maverick” radio segment, every Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. during “The Daily Blender with Jeffry O’Brien” on KBSZ - NBC 1260 AM and 96.1 FM

About the Film Columnists Stan Robinson, 65, is a retired first assistant director with more than 22 years of experience in film and media production. Read his full features and reviews exclusively online at ScreenScene.org. Randy Montgomery, 34, works in media and marketing and holds a master’s degree in counseling and education. ‘Carnage’ Two sets of parents (Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly) meet to discuss a nasty fight between their children, but their civilized discussion soon descends into finger pointing, insults and tantrums. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 79 minutes)

he takes us on an emotional ride.” Grade: B Randy: “If you can believe that four busy, New York adults/parents would actually sit down and have a conversation about their sons’ mishap on the playground, then you might find their actions comical. It is fun to watch them take sides and turn against each other. Kate Winslet delivers one of the funniest scenes of the year. Despite that, an abrupt ending and a somewhat forgettable movie may prevent ‘Carnage’ from winning any major awards the studio is hoping for.” Grade: BJoseph: “‘Carnage’ will do for apple cobblers what ‘The Help’ did for chocolate pies. Well, maybe not to the same extent, but the dessert does play a pivotal role in writer/director Roman Polanski’s dark comedy based on the French play ‘God of Carnage’ by Yasmina Reza. And despite what you might initially think about the film, which takes place entirely in an apartment with only four actors, its razor-sharp dialogue will have you as close to the edge of your seat as any action flick would. Unfortunately, the ending will leave you there.” Grade: B

Stan: “Reminded of the multiple Oscar® winner ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’(1966) directed by Mike Nichols which featured two couples that unleash hidden and repressed feelings in the course of one evening, the cast of Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly present two couples from different walks of life who’s relationships and lifestyles are laid bare in the course of one meeting, in one room demonstrates the filmmaking skill of writer/director Roman Polanski as

‘The Devil Inside’* A woman (Fernanda Andrade) recruits two young exorcists to help her determine whether her mother, who murdered three people, is mentally ill or possessed by demons. (R – 87 minutes) *Not made available for review.

‘The Heir Apparent: Largo Winch’ After a billionaire is murdered, his secret son (Tomer Sisley) must establish legitimacy to avoid losing a financial empire. Playing exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. (NR – 108 minutes) Joseph: “‘The Heir Apparent: Largo Winch’ is a bit generic and tries entirely too hard to be as international as possible but neither of those things prevent it from entertaining its viewers. Writer/director Jérôme Salle’s adventure thriller based on the Belgian comic book series by Philippe Francq and Jean Van Hamme moves along at a brisk pace – so brisk in fact, as it jumps from continent to continent, that it could be called quite the

ers. They made us up our game. We would be watching them work on their poems and put so much craft and passion into what they do that we would think, ‘If they can do this, we had better be able to do it, too.’ The amount of detail that they put into their work really inspired us to do the same with this and just keep pushing until it was exactly as we wanted it.” – Greg Jacobs “When you begin making a documentary, you are never quite sure where it’s going to take you. You kind of build the box for real life to play out in it. We used the format of a competition and picked the individuals we wanted to focus on but then real life happens and things don’t go exactly as planned or how you envisioned them. There were definitely some peaks and valleys along the way but we always trusted our instincts and that is something you also see in the kids. You have to find your voice and then trust that voice and. I think Greg and I did that with this film. They inspired us in that way, as well.” – Jon Siskel

Bonus Features The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf movies recently released to Blu-ray and DVD.

Directors Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel (‘Louder Than a Bomb’) By Joseph J. Airdo In “Louder Than a Bomb,” which airs 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5 exclusively on OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, four high school teams from Chicago prepare for and compete in the world’s largest youth poetry slam. Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel directed the documentary. “Once we got into the editing room it was sort of incumbent upon us to tell a really good story. The last thing we wanted to do was tell a lousy story about kids who were great storytell-

“Unfortunately, that day never came. So now I am stuck telling everyone in my family to [watch] ‘A Good Old Fashioned Orgy.’ I am from Chatsworth, which is the capital of the porn industry in Los Angeles, so I think there were a couple of jokes about, ‘Did we raise you in the wrong place? Is this all our fault?’” – Lindsay Sloane

Interview: Actor Triple H (‘Inside Out’) By Joseph J. Airdo

By Joseph J. Airdo

In “Inside Out,” Triple H plays a man who, having been released from prison, must protect his best friend’s (Michael Rapaport) family from a crime boss. The professional wrestler jumped at the opportunity to star in the film – especially because it was not what he believes most moviegoers would expect from a WWE Studios production.

After initially tossing “A Good Old Fashioned Orgy’s” script aside as a result of its outrageously obscene title, actress Lindsay Sloane eventually joined the project based on the belief that the movie would one day be re-titled to something less scandalous and therefore acceptable to tell her parents about.

“It was something different. It was not just a straight-up, blowup action film. It was more a story of people’s lives intersecting. It was more character driven. I liked that aspect of it. And it was also an opportunity to work with a lot of phenomenal people.” – Triple H

Without any level of exaggeration, if he didn’t want to work as an actor, he could make a very good living as a stuntman. He’s a very, very tough guy, and a very, very skilled, committed guy, who got himself fit and big. Very few of his stunts are done by a stuntman, almost everything is done by Chris himself!” – Andy Armstrong Actors and actresses who are doing more and more of the stunts in their films include:

~Jason Statham, a former Olympic diver who does all of his own stunts with all the kicks, explosions and of course his driving stunts in the ‘Transporter’ series, is spectacular to say the least.

Actors/Actresses doing their own stunts

~Matt Damon as Jason Bourne in the Bourne movies filmed multiple scenes in the water and jumped from a bridge despite the threat of drowning in the deep water, and performed all of his car crash stunts.

By Stan Robinson ‘Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol’ features the high octane thrill ride of a milieu of stunts with the stars, most notably Tom Cruise doing a high percentage of his stunts, allows the director to capture exceptional footage to further heighten the story. I was reminded of my conversation with Stunt Coordinator Andy Armstrong, whose credits include last year’s ‘Thor’, ‘The Green Hornet’, and the upcoming ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ (2012), and used his special touch with the principal actors doing ‘practical’ stunts for the action sequences of ‘Thor’ starring Chris Hemsworth. “We were lucky with a fantastic actor in Chris Hemsworth; he has a lot of physical action to do in the movie.

~Angelina Jolie did a lot of her own stunts for the movie ‘The Tourist’ (2010) and the movie ‘Salt’ (2010).

~Daniel Craig; After relying on doubles and CGI for his role of James Bond in ‘Casino Royale’ (2006), muscled up for ‘Quantum of Solace’

~Tom Cruise in ‘Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol’ repelled down the tallest skyscraper in Dubai, making his way from the 113th to the 112th floor, dangling about 2,000 feet off the ground. ~Zoe Bell is a stuntwoman and an actress as well and has performed all of her own stunts in films. She made

iron chef Geoffrey Zakarian gets no time to gather rust My chat with newly minted Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian was scheduled for 1:30 p.m., a few days after the premiere airing of his December victory on “The Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs.” He dialed in at precisely 1:30 p.m. “How’d I do?” he shouted. “Did I make it in time?” The mock anxiety reduced us both to laughter – me as a shameless superfan of the “Super Chefs” and Zakarian as the cool-headed culinary wizard who spent three months battling a merciless clock, everchanging cooking conditions and a veritable carnival of ingredients to best nine of his fellow celebrity chefs to earn the coveted Iron Chef title. Zakarian, the silver-haired, bespectacled chef known best to Food Network audiences as a judge on “Chopped” and “24 Hour Restaurant Battle,” says that as an Iron Chef, he won’t change the oft-risky game plan that occasionally won him the jurors’ ire on “The Next Iron Chef” but ultimately led to victory.

“180 From Ordinary” I wrote about this place before it had it all together. Happy hour has changed a great deal and is now every day from 4-7pm, along with different specials throughout the week. Blue Collar Mondays offer a $1PBR 16oz with the purchase of any signature burger. Wednesdays are ‘buy one get one half off’ sliders. Fridays are $2 off drafts ALL day!! The Sonoran Desert Amber is my favorite. They only carry local breweries on tap and are rotated periodically. Great burgers, it’s new so come support this local business. 1645 N. Hayden rd. BEER! HARD CIDERS… EASY TO ENJOY It has been no secret that for the past few years craft beer has been an exploding trend across America. Everywhere you look there are new breweries and craft beer bars opening up. It used to be that ten to twenty tap handles was considered a lot. Now, we routinely see fifty handle bars featuring “No crap on tap” signs and bar owners that eight years ago couldn’t even spell IPA are scrambling to find the most flavorful of the heavily hopped beers. Given all that, it is no wonder that craft beer has grown consistently at double digit rates over the past five years and is well over 16% this year. However, another beverage is coming along for the ride. A beverage that proves , as

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” Bruce Springsteen wrote, “Everything dies, baby that’s a fact, but maybe everything that dies some day comes back…” Such is the case with hard cider. Hard cider, alcoholic fruit juice, usually from apples, is not a new creation. In fact it has been around ever since someone accidentally let apple juice sit around too long allowing the sugars to ferment from the natural yeasts in the air. Exactly when that happened is unclear. There are records of apple trees along the Nile River delta as early as 1300 BC but nothing to say if cider was produced. The earliest known record of cider dates back to 55 BC when the Romans arrived in England. They found the residents of Kent drinking a cider like beverage and Julius Caesar immediately embraced this

new found beverage. Cider began to really become popular around the time of the Norman Conquest, 1066 AD, when orchards were planted specifically to grow cider apples, farm workers were paid in cider and monasteries were producing a strong, spiced cider which they sold to the public. Who ever thought that there might be Trappist Ciders? American history tells a different tale. Early English settlers introduced cider to America by bringing with

them seeds for cultivating cider apples. During the colonial period, grains did not thrive well and were costly to import. On the other hand, apple orchards were plentiful, making apples cheap and easily obtainable. As a result, hard cider quickly became one of America’s most popular beverages. Consumption of cider increased steadily during the eighteenth century, due in part to the efforts of the legendary Johnny Appleseed, who planted many apple Continued on Page 40...

Hello again Beer Lovers, today let’s take a moment to wrap up last week’s feature article with a person we left out and one elaboration. First off, I interviewed Greg Fretz co-owner of the new Phoenix Ale Brewery for the original article but

BEER! SECTION

Arizona Craft Beer Movers & Shakers, The Wrap Up

omitted him by mistake. Greg, known as “Fretzy” began with Pyramid Brewing in 1997 and served as West Coast Regional Manager, handling Arizona, California, Oregon and more. In 2008 he left Pyramid to become the regional manager for Deschutes Brewing, popularizing this Oregon brewery’s brand name in our craft beer community. In 2010 Fretzy reunited with George Hancock, founder of Pyramid Brewing to open Phoenix Ale here in Arizona. Known for brewing unfiltered ales, Phoenix Ale has released three so far including a Watermelon Wheat. Sure to be a hit when summer rears its ugly head.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeverages.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Next up is Anthony Canecchia, owner of SanTan Brewing. As you know, I finish every article asking for comments. I was approached in person by a SanTan regular who felt slighted that I had not touched on more than just Anthony’s marketing skills. Having said so, I agree, so let’s take it from the top. Anthony began years back with a “How To” Home Brewing paperback given to him by a roommate. It captured his imagination and it wasn’t long before he began working at a local homebrew shop and at Four Peaks Brewing. After working as a commercial brewer for seven years Anthony realized the need to do it his way. In September of 2007 that dream became reality with the opening SanTan Brewing. The place was an instant success and has become a cornerstone of the local craft beer community. SanTan won a medal with their beer “Mr. Pineapple” at GABF in 2010. That’s Local Commitment! As always, keep sending those comments and questions to kingjamessawnn@ gmail.com and remember, I’m always listening! Cheers. January 5th, 2012 - January 11th, 2012

BEER! SECTION ... continued from Page 38. trees in the Midwest. American cider started to wane in popularity when the German immigrants of the mid 1800’s brought with them recipes and methods for brewing beer that allowed them to set up large breweries and produce a large amount to sell relatively inexpensively. That coupled with the early rumblings of the Temperance Movement slowly led to the demise of hard cider in this country. Prohibition all but killed it off. Cider was still made in very small batches at home. Typically this was accomplished by allowing regular apple juice or non-alcoholic cider to ferment naturally, much as the early ciders were made. This beverage, sometimes freeze distilled and called Applejack, was an alternative to the bathtub gin of Prohibition and continued to be enjoyed in individual households. However improved evaporative distillation methods which removed the impurities that freeze distillation left in ensured that Applejack would never replace more traditional spirits.

40

Cider sort of plodded along through the years until the craft beer movement started in the mid 1970’s with the opening of the New Albion Brewery by pioneer brewer Jack McAuliffe. Slowly, as old boundaries were pushed in the production of beer, brewers and consumers started looking for different flavors and naturally looked to the past to update and hopefully improve nostalgic recipes. Such was the case January 5th, 2012 - January 11th, 2012

for cider. While cider had remained in production in Europe, mostly England and France, Americans no longer had a cider tradition so they created new brands, ones that had more commercial opportunity then the more expensive imports. The wheels of the cider industry were slowly turning again. Apple at first and then some creativity introduced other fruits into the mix. Pear, Peach and Raspberry ciders were all produced, although in truth, many of these were just apple ciders with flavoring added. These beverages typically had one thing in common, they were sweet, sometimes cloyingly so. They became another Zima like beverage, not beer, but close enough for people to drink and enjoy with beer drinkers. Still the popularity grew, and folks that had enjoyed flavored malt beverages like Zima started to flock to ciders and brewers found that ciders blended well with certain beers allowing the flavors in the beer to take some of the edge off the sweetness of the cider and the fruit in the cider to enhance the beer. Stout and cider has become a popular combination. One company in particular started looking at different ways to produce cider, and perhaps find flavors that went beyond sweet. Inspired by the English who make drier ciders and serve them over ice Crispin Ciders was born. Based in Minneapolis but with their cidery located in Northern California wine country, Crispin has re-invented cider once again. Their flagship cider is dry and Continued on Page 41...

served over ice. It has a pronounced difference from most American and even Canadian ciders. But that is not all they do. This is a creative bunch and experimentation is natural. Of course they have a fruit cider lineup, sold under the Fox Barrel label which includes a pear cider of course, but also a blackberry pear and an apricot pear cider. This creativity has become their hallmark and has extended well beyond fruit. How about a cider made with Trappist beer yeast and a little organic maple syrup? They’ve got that and it is called The Saint. Brewed with stout yeast and unfiltered… Lansdowne. Sake yeast and organic rice syrup…they’ve got Cho-Tokkyu. They even pay homage to the English ciders with their Brownslane cider which they have produced in England for authenticity. Named after the original Jaguar automobile factory, this beer comes in British Racing Green cans designed to make you feel like you are across the pond, as they say. With all this creativity, it is no wonder that pundits have dubbed them the “Dogfish Head of Cider.” But wait, there is more. Just as Dogfish Head comes up with seemingly crazy ideas for beer, Crispin brings the outlandish to the cider world and makes it work. Desert Noir was created especially for an Arizona based beer event, but this combination of cider aged in whiskey barrels and cider aged

in red wine oak barrels, and then sweetened up just a little with Agave Nectar and Prickly Pear syrup was so good that it was released nationally. Other special releases have included a straight bourbon barrel aged cider called The Jacket and one called The Union, created to celebrate the recent royal wedding. It is a combined fermentation, a marriage, of equal amounts of pure apple & pear juices using authentic French champagne yeast, with organic honey and kissed with a touch of rose water. Currently you may still find on shelves Stagger Lee, another original concept. Stagger Lee is a rye whiskey cask aged unfiltered cider which is blended three times and uses unfiltered freshpressed Gravenstein apple juice and a wit-style yeast. Crispin even has a complete menu of cocktails and beer blends at CrispinCider.com. So there you have it, a short history of cider. The important thing to remember about cider is that it tastes great and is a refreshing alternative to beer. So, occasionally, when your palate may tire of hops and grains and such, reach for a cider. Try something different, blend your cider with Breckenridge Vanilla Porter or Blue Moon, or try a cider cocktail. The American craft beer movement has depended on people searching for new flavors and unsatisfied with the status quo. Ciders help open up that world of taste just a little more.

Go Big on the Track – and Bigger on Your Safety Whether you’ve been riding for years or you’re getting on a bike for the first time, you need to observe certain safety precautions to ensure that you have fun and come out the other end in one piece. This isPM especially important for those 4:15 interested in motocross because of the extreme nature of the sport.

Riding a motorcycle can be dangerous even if you’re cruising down the road, but throw in rough and rugged terrain, jumps, (even mid-air stunts, if you go that way) and a competitive atmosphere, and you’ve got a whole other world of things that could go wrong, resulting in injury and even death. So it’s important to pay attention to safety tips if you want to excel in motocross. 1.) Know the risks. To begin with, motorcycles can be difficult to control. Even dirt bikes, while smaller than some street bikes, are heavy and cumbersome. They can behave like an extension of your body and your

2.) Use proper safety gear. This one is not too hard to figure out. There

noises. 4.) Practice. Unfortunately, practice does not make perfect in a sport where so many outside factors can affect your performance, but it certainly minimizes the risks involved. So know the ins and outs of riding your bike, be aware of any hiccups (or try to work them out), run a new bike through the paces before you take it on the track, and take your time in practice runs to learn the course like the back of your hand. Run it on the

are many resources available online and in bike shops to help you select the proper suiting, booting, elbow and knee guards, helmets, gloves, goggles and various other protective pieces to ensure that you’re outfitted for the utmost safety. 3.) Maintain your equipment. Your bike is a machine that requires regular inspection and maintenance, especially if you’re entrusting it with your life. So be diligent about keeping it clean and in good working order, make an effort to learn how it works and how to care for it, and don’t ignore warning signs that could herald problems, such as cracks, leaks, excessive wear, or strange

inside, the outside, and through the middle. If you know that bump is coming, you can brace for it instead of being caught off guard and slipping or going down. 5.) Don’t take unnecessary risks. Sure you want to win, otherwise you wouldn’t be competing. But don’t push yourself into unnecessarily risky situations that could spell trouble for you or other riders in pursuit of that brass ring. If you want to go on to race another day, always practice safety first.

will or they can act as a lead weight and a liability. Besides that, you will be moving at high speeds, more or less unprotected. And in motocross in particular, you are careening around the course with several other riders, any of whom could foul up the party at any time. But as long as you are aware of the risks, you can take precautions to avoid accident and injury.

Guitarist-SingerSongwriter Extraordinaire Willy Porter Brings His Remarkable Artistry to Cave Creek Tickets On Sale Now for Wed., Jan. 18 Concert at Harold’s Corral Critics rave about Willy Porter’s talent as an acoustic guitarist, singer and songwriter. The Wisconsin musician, whose “dexterity defies physics” visits Arizona for a special concert at 8 p.m. on Wed., Jan. 18 at Harold’s Cave Creek Corral, 6895 E. Cave Creek Road, in Cave Creek. Gates open at 8:15 p.m. and Porter will take the stage at 8:30 p.m. The concert is co-presented by the Roastery of Cave Creek (ROC2). Advance tickets are available at www. Ticketmaster.com or at Harold’s Corral. VIP seats in the first three rows cost $25; general admission seats cost $18 and general admission

standing tickets cost $10. Harold’s is also booking dinner reservations prior to the show. How To Rob A Bank, the latest release from esteemed guitarist/singersongwriter, showcases Porter’s continued growth as a songwriter and recording artist. Porter offers a rich blend of salt and sugar with tracks that move easily from rough-hewn electric edges into soulful irony with equal aplomb. Having toured with artists as diverse as Jeff Beck and Tori Amos, Porter capitalizes on his experience as a seasoned live performer on How To Rob A Bank. Frets Magazine called Porter “a genredefying maverick.” He continues on that path as he easily transitions from the light-hearted McCartney-esque “Lemon Tree” into “I Didn’t Bring it Up,” in which Porter wryly declares he “checked the oil and cleared the gutters” of mid-life marriage. In the electric guitar-driven “Hard Place” he digs into three generations of an

American soldier’s perspective. The rest of the album includes flavors of New Orleans (“Wide Open Mind”), The Band (“Psychic Vampire”) and post bluegrass country (“Barefoot Reel”). Porter’s music can be heard at www. WillyPorter.com and at www.myspace.com/ willporter. For more details, call (480) 488-1906 or visit www.haroldscorral.com.

Every year is different. Sometimes we may not see the differences in the events and situations that went down until we reflect back on them and realize their true value and how they will forever be engrained in our brains. But I won’t discuss too much about past year reflections and New Year resolutions—I’m sure you got enough of that on your facebook news feed over the past couple of weeks. Although everything is constantly changing, there are some things that always stay the same, including a good Irish pub. As soon as you walk through the doors of this bar owned by Belfast native, Seamus McCaffrey, you’ll instantly feel like you’ve been transported to Ireland itself. The place is decked out in dark wood--from the floor to the booths to the beams in the ceiling. Going there during the winter months will make you feel all warm and cozy inside and out not only from the Guiness, but because the staff there truly cares about your experience. Seamus is a huge football (soccer) fan and loves the sport so go there to watch a game or two and get rowdy with the boys from the Celtic Soccer Club who are supported by this pub. Wednesday through Sunday, drop in the evening for some live Irish band music and try to decipher what they are actually saying. 11am – 2am All Week. 906 E. Camelback Rd., Phoenix. Sticky Fingers at Bar Smith DJ William Reed created Sticky Fingers at what I think is downtown Phoenix’s best dance club and bar. This weekly event occurs every Friday on the rooftop patio turned dance floor where you get a taste of some

awesome local DJ talent. DJs Prince$$, Pickster One, and Austin Head are just a few examples of the turntable talents that frequently perform here and whose music will force you to dance in a way you never thought you could. Don’t be scared to give in to the rhythmic motions your brain is telling your muscles to express. I’ve seen some pretty eclectic dancers here and they don’t give an eff if you’re more than surprised at their technique. The electro, house, indie, and dubstep will penetrate your body and push beats through your limbs in sequences one should be proud of and everyone is having the same mental disco party in their heads. I have literally never partied here and been unsatisfied. If you shy away from dancing then just going to people watch is entertaining enough. There are hipsters galore at this joint so maybe save the flannel shirt for Scottsdale if you want to stick out. The nice thing about Bar Smith is that the top floor is completely different from the first so if you feel like switching it up, head downstairs for more dancing from a different DJ. This Friday is the First Friday of 2012 so dance outside under a desert moon and make merry at Sticky Fingers. Fridays. 9pm – 3am. 130 E. Washington St. www.ilovestickyfingers.com. $5

Gotham City Impostors PC, PSN, XBLA/Jan. 10

Open Pool $2 Domestic Pints

The Dark Knight has seen quite a run of success in the video game market with the onetwo punch of “Batman: Arkham Asylum” and “Batman: Arkham City.” Both games managed to capture the crime-filled streets of Gotham as the Caped Crusader valiantly fought an endless supply of ne’er-do-wells. With so many games displaying the grittier side of masked vigilantism, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment thought the time was right to show that fighting crime can also be filled with twisted humor and general wackiness. It is with this thought that “Gotham City Impostors” was born. Gotham has been the battlefield for Batman and the Joker for decades now, but even superheroes and villains need a break. When these legendary icons head home for a little rest and relaxation, a new breed of warrior comes out to play. Enter the Impostors. These combatants come from all walks of life to continue the fight that Batman and the Joker started so very long ago. Now utter chaos has erupted in the streets of Gotham as sadistic, wannabe Jokerz donning the colorful outfits and face paint of their beloved idol wage war against an army of cowl-wearing heroes emblazoned with the sign of the Bat. It’s now up to you to choose your side, wield your makeshift weaponry and vanquish your enemy, because you have nothing better to do with your time.

* July 16, 2004: Martha Stewart is sentenced to five months in prison (and five months of house arrest) for a stock sale. According to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Stewart avoided a loss of $45,673 by selling all 3,928 shares of her ImClone Systems stock on December 27, 2001, after receiving material, nonpublic information from Peter Bacanovic, who was Stewart’s broker at Merrill Lynch. Martha Helen Stewart (née Kostyra), is an American business magnate, media personality, author, and magazine publisher and founder of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. She has gained success through her intelligence, perseverance, simply put; her pure resolve to bring to fruition her visions. On the cover of the May 1995 issue, New York Magazine declared her as “the definitive American woman of our time”.

Although the media widely speculated that the situation would effectively be the end of her media empire, Stewart began a comeback campaign in 2005, with her company returning to profitability the following year. In the months that followed, Stewart drew heavy media scrutiny, including a Newsweek cover headlined “Martha’s Mess”. Notably on June 25, 2002, CBS anchor Jane Clayson grilled Stewart on the air about ImClone during her regular segment on The Early Show. Stewart continued chopping cabbage and famously quipped, “I just want to focus on my salad”.

While in confinement, she took a job and became an informal liaison between the administration and her fellow inmates. The People special, Scandals! That Rocked America stated “Some expected America’s goddess of domestic perfection to fall into terminal despair. Instead, with the drive that would make her a billionaire, Stewart took her lemon of a sentence and made lemonade. Heck, she made a lemon soufflé.”
