ARTS! Cover Story - Circus Vargas

AMERICA’S FAVORITE BIG TOP CIRCUS! CIRCUS VARGAS IS BRINGING ITS BIG TOP TO ARIZONA As seen in the recent 20th Century Fox motion picture “Water for Elephants”

Circus Vargas, America’s Favorite Big Top Circus, is excited to bring the Big One back to Arizona, for the first time under its new ownership, with big heart, big laughs, big talent and big FUN! This is only some of what you’ll experience when Circus Vargas comes to town, pitching its beautiful blue and gold Big Top, as seen in the recent 20th Century Fox motion picture, “Water for Elephants”. The new animal-free show will be in Tempe at the Arizona Mills January 26 through February 3 and in Phoenix at the Metro Center Mall February 9 through 13.

10

Striving to present the finest in family entertainment, Tabares Entertainment proudly presents this edition of Circus Vargas, taking you on an artistic journey encompassing the cultures of the world. Join us on a captivating jaunt across the globe as seen through the eyes of

our talented performers. Watch as they transcend language, age and cultural barriers through the art of circus. Featuring death-defying motorcycle feats, aerial artistry, hilarious clown antics and much more makes Circus Vargas fun for the entire family! Thirty minutes before show time fans will get an exciting peek into the world of Circus Vargas with the interactive preshow, hosted by reality TV personality from the CBS show The Amazing Race, Mr. Jon Weiss. He will be front and center welcoming the audience and inviting children to take “center stage”. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the pre-show action, and join Jon as he guides them on a quick crash course in circus skill and stamina! In 1969, Clifford E. Vargas fulfilled his childhood dream when he raised the canvas of what was to become “Americas favorite Big Top Circus!”As a lifelong circus spectator and fan, Vargas believed

January 19th, 2012 - January 25th, 2012 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

he could bring back the glamour, thrills and excitement of the time honored, authentic tented circus. He was adamant that “a circus just wasn’t a circus if it wasn’t under the Big Top” and he wanted to make sure that every generation would have the opportunity to experience the magic of the Big Top firsthand. “We are extremely proud to be presenting an all-new show! And we are aware that the first thing that comes to mind when the public hears the circus is coming to town is the tent! The magic, the ambience, the feeling you get when you walk into the Big Top is incomparable. It makes Circus Vargas what it was meant to be - true to its heritage and to its tradition,” states Katya Quiroga, owner and producer of Circus Vargas. The “Star” of Circus Vargas was hand-made in Milan, Italy, and is one of the most state of-the-art Big Top tents in use today. This theater-style tent comfortably seats 1,200 people and consists of 90,000 square feet of canvas fabric. It is supported by 500 individually placed stakes and over four miles of rope and cable weighing over 17 tons. Each set-up day, at the crack of dawn, 20 men start the seven-hour process of raising the Big Top, and each tear-down night, by the light of the moon, the same 20 men roll the tent up and pack it carefully to travel to the next town, where the process begins anew. Arrive Early for the Preview Show! Prior to every show, Jon Weiss is front and center, welcoming the

audience and inviting the children (of all ages) into center ring to feel what life is like under the Big Top! Join the fun with Jon as he guides everyone on a crash course in circus skills such as juggling, feather balancing and hula-hooping! An All-American Animal Free Circus! Presenting the highest quality family entertainment, Circus Vargas exemplifies circus as an art form. Uniting amazingly skilled performers with the innocence and silliness of truly comedic circus antics! This latest edition of Circus Vargas bridges the gap between old tradition and modern innovation. The appreciation of circus fans old and new keeps the performers loving what they do at Circus Vargas – and it shows! For more information about Circus Vargas and to purchase tickets visit www.circusvargas.com, by phone at 877-GOTFUN-1 (877-468-3861) or at the circus box office which opens one day prior to the first show. JON & LAURA WEISS

If you ever wanted to run away with the circus, this would be your chance! Half an hour prior to every show, Jon Weiss and his lovely wife Laura, along with the Circus Vargas kids, host an exciting interactive pre-show center ring, under the Circus Vargas Big Top! “This is our way of welcoming the audience and making their experience here even more personal.” It’s a great opportunity to meet and mingle with Jon as he shares some of his amazing skills and encourages children of all ages to try their hand at juggling, clowning, balancing and much more! Then watch in awe as John balances everything from a feather to a grocery cart to a huge 10-foot ladder on this chin!

THE FLYING TABARES

World-renowned aerialists, The Flying Tabares have thrilled audiences on virtually every continent. Comprised of a multi-generational and tightlyknit family, this troupe of daring

athletes is known not merely for their precision and execution of extremely dangerous acrobatic feats, but also for the seemingly effortless grace and balletic style with which they present themselves.

MATTI

A love-stricken clown searches for his heart’s desire, his one true love! Matti Esqueda is Circus Vargas’ loveable comedian, whose pursuit of love leads him on a journey across the continents, from the Pampas of Argentina, through the islands of the Caribbean until finally he makes his way back to America. What adventures await him? One thing is certain, Matti’s riotous routines will bring out the child in everyone. But beware; he is often inspired to include members of the audience in some of his comical capers.

VICTOR KIM

A meshing of masculine strength and grace amazingly executed on the aerial straps.

HAYLEY KENT Years of extensive training in gymnastics, ballet, and contortion groomed this Los Angeles native into the elegant artist, she is today. Hayley joins Circus Vargas this season with an incredible display of handbalancing and contortion. Amazingly lithe and agile, she delights spectators of all ages, as she twists and poses, poised and graceful, with strength and flexibility to create beautiful shapes with only

her own body!

THE GARCIA FAMILY ULTIMATE GLOBE - Only at Circus Vargas! The Garcia family has made a career out of pushing the limits. While most people spend their lives trying to avoid danger, they embrace it! True daredevils at heart, they both thrill and terrify audiences with their high-octane, revved up routine of split-second timing, precision and velocity. Watch as they maneuver their motorcycles inside the steel sphere at breakneck speed, spinning simultaneously around the globe in a continual circular motion passing each other, crisscrossing, and missing each other by mere fractions of an inch. Suddenly, as if not intimidating enough, the globe is then hoisted into the air and without warning splits into three distinct pieces; three separate levels, all while the daring duo continue driving perilously in the middle! This extreme performance, while nervously exciting to watch, is definitely not for the faint at heart and can only be seen at Circus Vargas! “This is the only Motorcycle Globe of this kind, in the world” states Leo Garcia.

WHEEL OF DESTINY

As the 30-foot pendulum wheel revolves in mid-air, Leo Garcia defies the laws of gravity, combining balancing skills with speed as he walks, runs, somersaults, jumps rope on the inside and the outside of the circle, and faces death as he circumnavigates the outside of the

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Wheel blindfolded! The audience holds its breath, often followed by a standing ovation! Leo is a sixthgeneration circus performer who takes great pride in performing this act, first presented by his father in the 1970’s.

THE ZINDUNA BROTHERS

Patrick, Hamizi, Karimba, Omar and Adam, from Kenya, perform an authentic African Acrobatic Assemblage of tumbling, dancing, pyramids and more! They have performed in circuses all over the world, including Italy, Saudia Arabia, and Japan. The Zinduna Brothers are fourth-generation circus performers and the present troupe was trained by their uncles and older brothers. It took many years to perfect their skills and their recommendation to the audience: “Don’t try this at home!”

CAST HIGHLIGHTS

THE GAUCHOS – MARTHA and SERGIO

Martha and Sergio embody the spirit of the famed Gauchos of the Pampas in an unbelievably powerful and commanding performance of Argentine Folkloric dance and music. They demonstrate an abundance of skill and technique, utilizing the traditional cape and boleadoras in their repertoire. The gripping sounds of the “zapateo” and boleadoras, melding with the rhythmic beating of the bombo drum is an experience that is difficult to describe. It is emotional, passionate, dangerous and completely fascinating to watch!

Reviewers’ Roundtable The following quotes were pulled from AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists’ full reviews in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of each of this weekend’s new releases.

Randy Montgomery, AZ Weekly Film Critic

Listen to Joseph J. Airdo’s “Movie Maverick” radio segment, every Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. during “The Daily Blender with Jeffry O’Brien” on KBSZ - NBC 1260 AM and 96.1 FM

About the Film Columnists Stan Robinson, 65, is a retired first assistant director with more than 22 years of experience in film and media production. Read his full features and reviews exclusively online at ScreenScene.org. Randy Montgomery, 34, works in media and marketing and holds a master’s degree in counseling and education. ‘Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close’ Convinced that his late father (Tom Hanks) left a final message for him somewhere in New York City, a boy (Thomas Horn) scours the five boroughs for clues relating to a mysterious key. Also starring Sandra Bullock. (PG-13 – 129 minutes)

Randy: “A 9/11 film without the politics is always welcomed. This is a heartwarming story that also provides a bit of mystery and intrigue. Sandra Bullock is likable as always, but the real star of the show is young newcomer Thomas Horn. The Phoenix Film Critics Society recognized horn in numerous categories. Hopefully, the Hollywood Foreign Press and the Academy will do the same. Tom Hanks and an impressive supporting cast make ‘Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close’ a true winner.” Grade: B+ Joseph: “There is quirky and then there is actor Thomas Horn’s character in ‘Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close,’ a pretentious young man who constantly shakes a tambourine everywhere he goes. And he goes an awful lot of places. I desperately desired to grab his tambourine and throw it as far away from him as possible (which, by the way, is the politically correct version of my actual aspirations). The only thing worse than Horn’s character is the movie itself, a trivial exercise in emotional manipulation.” Grade: D

‘Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos’

Stan: “With a slow start of the ‘idyllic family’ enjoying the fantasy lifestyle we all yearn for, the film steadily shifts to the core of the story of a young child (and an exceptional performance by Thomas Horn) dealing with the death of his father (Tom Hanks)and his mother (Sandra Bullock) while grieving her husband’s loss, has the fortitude to give her son the space he needs to accomplish his odyssey which she knows is his form of closure, as she secretly and carefully watches over him along the way.” Grade: B+

A fugitive alchemist with mysterious abilities leads the Elric brothers to a distant valley of slums inhabited by the Milos, a proud people struggling against bureaucratic exploitation. In Japanese with English subtitles. Playing exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. (NR – 110 minutes) Stan: “Not familiar with the characters of the franchise but always up for new discovery and aware of the popularity of the anime animation style, I found myself taken with the theme of the downtrodden in their struggle for social justice. I’m reminded of the ‘Kung Fu Panda’ films’ animation videogame like style, and yes I had work to learn the characters, keep up with the plot, but all in all, looking forward to the next adventure.” Grade: B Joseph: “‘Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos’ is a fansonly affair. That is to say that if you are not already familiar with the franchise, it is best to steer clear of this anime effort as it will not only fail to sufficiently entertain you but also leave your head spinning in complete confusion. Granted, the action sequences are mildly amusing but the motion picture’s plot is so incredibly convoluted that newcomers, like myself, could not comprehend this chronicle even if the fate of their entire existence hung in the balance.” Grade: D

‘Haywire’* After a successful mission to free a Chinese hostage, a highly trained operative (Gina Carano) is betrayed and left for dead by someone in her own agency. Also starring Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Bill Paxton, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas and Michael Douglas. (R – 92 minutes) *Screened after deadline.

Having faced segregation while kept mostly on the ground during World War II, a crew of African American pilots in the Tuskegee training program is called into duty under the guidance of Col. A.J. Bullard (Terrence Howard). Also starring Cuba Gooding Jr. (PG-13 – 100 minutes)

of days. In fact, it was almost harder to get the stuff set up leading to that moment, like getting us down to that cliff and getting those ropes rigged. They built this whole structure that was our cliff edge and had a wire going out into the great beyond. The mechanics of pulling off that sequence alone were fascinating to me.

‘Underworld:

by Stan Robinson

“But the real meat and potatoes of it came on the second or third day when I am then in fact hanging onto a wire with no harness. I am only 10 or 15 feet above a stunt pad, so it was not like I was in any kind of danger, but all of that closer footage of me on the wire took the better part of a day and I found it not to be scary for my safety but deeply exhausting. “We shot all of the blizzard footage in Smithers, British Colombia up on a mountain in the 30 degrees below zero cold where there were 60 mile per hour winds. We would go up there every day and shoot until there was no more light. I had just finished shooting ‘Big Miracle’ in Anchorage, Alaska. We were working in subzero temperatures there, too. So by the time I shot ‘The Grey,’ I had already been working in harsh weather for 3 months.” – Dermot Mulroney

During World War II there was a shortage of metal and Oscars® were made of plaster. After the war, they were traded for the “real” thing.

By Joseph J. Airdo

“‘Red Tails’ is visually stunning. I am excited for people to experience it. The character that I play in it and the character that Terrence Howard plays are two parts of one man – Major Benjamin O. Davis, who was the first black four-star general. Our characters are based on this man’s life that is just so full of honor, taking these young boys from Tuskegee, Alabama all over Europe and turning them into warriors.

In “The Grey,” which opens Jan. 27, an oil drilling team struggles to survive amidst a pack of vicious wolves after a plane crash strands them in the Alaskan wilderness.Dermot Mulroney plays onesaid survivors, who must shuffle across a rope that is strung from a cliff into a forest high above a canyon. “That entire sequence took a couple UltraLuxe Scottsdale Cinemas at the Pavilions at Talking Stick 9090 E. role that I do more and more. Which gave me the most growth as a man and as an actor would be hard to say. But I can say it would probably be ‘Men of Honor.’ Master Chief Carl Brashear really affected me. I get a lot of people who say, ‘Show me the money!’ I get a lot of people who say, ‘Congratulations on your Oscar win!’ But I get just as many – if not more – saying, ‘My favorite movie of yours was that diver movie.’ “On the surface, ‘Men of Honor’ can be perceived as a very American movie. But I think that it is a triumph movie about a man who has such strong morals that he changed the lives of everyone around him in such a powerful way that people are still identifying with it today.” – Cuba Gooding Jr.

Bonus Features The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf movies recently released to Blu-ray and DVD.

In “Dirty Girl,” which was written and directed by Abe Sylvia, Jeremy Dozier plays a closeted gay teenager who accompanies his promiscuous friend (Juno Temple) on a mission to find her long-absent father. “I already knew everything that [my character] learned over the course of the film so it just reinforced that you have to love yourself in order to be successful and happy in life. I learned from Abe that if you believe in something and have a passion for something, you have to pursue it. It took him a while to get this film made but he believed in it and followed through and now we have this great film to show for it.”– Jeremy Dozier “It really does take a village to get these things made. It takes people really having faith in the material – and in me I don’t take that kind of faith lightly. It becomes an obsession after a while. At some point, I think that I had had invested so much blood, sweat and tears on it that the fear of failing and being humiliated is what kept me going more than anything else.”– Abe Sylvia

‘Good Morning, Vietnam!’ By Joseph J. Airdo In “Good Morning, Vietnam!,” Robin Williams portrays Adrian Cronauer, a disc jockey who in 1965 Saigon turns Armed Forces Radio on its ear with his irreverent brand of humor. Richard Portnow and Juney Smith also star. Buena Vista Home Entertainment this week released the comedy to Blu-ray in celebration of its 25th anniversary. “It was the most exciting I thing I have ever done. I did not even know where Bangkok was when I got the call. An extreme location can be a real dream job because it is some place that you are unlikely to ever go to. I never would have gone to Thailand but I was traveling first class and being paid to do a terrific film and spend three months in the country. It was incredible.”– Richard Portnow “The word genius exists for a reason. Somebody has got to accomplish it. [Robin Williams] did that. I knew that [‘Good Morning, Vietnam!’] would resonate with people because the script had solid humor based on a real dramatic situation and a real person. Great writing, great directing

‘Carnage’ ~ “Demonstrates the filmmaking skill of writer/director Roman Polanski as he takes us on an emotional ride!” Stan Robinson ~ “Kate Winslet delivers one of the funniest scenes of the year!” - Randy Montgomery ~ “Its razor-sharp dialogue will have you as close to the edge of your seat as any action flick would!” - Joseph J. Airdo

‘The Iron Lady’ ~ “Oscar® winner Meryl Streep brings a ‘tour de force’ view of Margaret Thatcher!” - Stan Robinson ~ “Meryl Streep’s performance as Margaret Thatcher is impressive!” Randy Montgomery ~ “Meryl Streep gives an outstanding performance! The actress appears to do no wrong!” - Joseph J. Airdo

True to the 2012 Year of the Dragon horoscope predicting that it will be a flamboyant year, Ling & Louie’s Asian Bar and Grill has concocted a dazzling Chinese New Year “Feast of Fortune” menu with limited-time items such as Asian Sea Bass, Ling’s Lucky Noodles, Char Siu Pork Tenderloin and General Ling’s Chicken—a dish Ling has been waiting to unveil for a special occasion. The special “Lucky Libations” menu guarantees to increase good fortune with every sip of its exclusive drinks like the Mandarin Blossom, Ginger Peach Bourbon tea, Prosperity Punch and more.

As you can tell, Ling & Louie’s is pulling out all the stops for the Year of the Dragon since it holds the most significance and good fortune, promising to be the most prosperous of years. This includes decorating the restaurant with striking Chinese New Year traditions such as gongs, paper lanterns and dragons. The restaurant will be splashed in red, a common tradition to encourage “good fortune”, “happiness”, “wealth” and “longevity”. According to Chinese tradition, the year reflects the characteristics of people born during the year, so there will be a special charisma and boldness about 2012--it promises to be an exhilarating, exciting and unpredictable year! This year, guests who order off the Feast of Fortune Menu will have an opportunity to ring a Chinese gong and pick a lucky red envelope containing a prize and fortune for the New Year. If you can’t resist great Chinese food and are looking for a “Not Boring” time, Ling & Louie’s Chinese New Year celebration is a great opportunity to participate in the most jubilant of Chinese traditions. The festivities will be taking place January 20 – 23, 2012 at the popular Ling & Louie’s Asian Bar and Grill locations in Scottsdale (9397 E. Shea Boulevard, Scottsdale, AZ) and in the Wild Horse Pass Casino on the Gila River Indian Community (5040 Wild Horse Pass Blvd., Chandler, AZ). St. Francis (111 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix, 602-200-8111) is an urban dining experience that could easily set on a bustling block in Chicago or San Francisco hot spot. Lucky for us this LocalLily.com favorite is right in the heart of our fair city. www. stfrancisaz.com The service at this locally owned gem is impeccable. The chefs source local purveyors to create their signature seasonal menus and this time of year the pumpkin soup can’t be beat. Add to this an all day happy hour and kids eat free, and it’s easy to see why I adore this place. St. Francis is a family-owned, family friendly, neighborhood restaurant with a vibe all its own. Wood-fired brick oven meals are priced around $15 and small bites and half salads run about $6. Items include artisan flatbreads, quinoa salads, seasonal soups, a few fish offerings, roasted chicken dinners, burgers and braised beef plates. I love going to those places where I just feel like I am on vacation. Whenever I visit the Biltmore, I get just that experience. Frank and Albert’s inside this plaza offer a “High Five” happy hour which occurs between 5-7pm. The $5 options consist of: chef’s daily selections of four bar bites, house red and white wines, domestic beers, and specialty cocktails. The grilled cheese sandwich is one of the bar bites that is so delicious, and I had the prickly peartini; which you can’t really go wrong with. With the beautiful weather that we have in Arizona, I highly recommend sitting outside, even though the inside is beautiful as well. 2400 E. Missouri Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85016 “Day Drinking Anyone?” Crabby Don’s Bar and Grill is a neighborhood place that is fun to hang out at. I love their early happy hour from 11am-7pm. They have: $3 well drinks, $2.25 bottled domestics, $2.25 16oz draft beer, and $5 pitchers of domestic draft beer. On Thursdays and Fridays they do offer $2 off all appetizers on top of those drink specials as well. With those kinds of drink specials it is a great place to go and watch some sports. It is basketball season now, so go and cheer for the Phoenix Suns baby! 3861 East baseline Rd. Gilbert, AZ 85234 www.facebook.com/carrie.gurule

BEER! SECTION

BEER! ARIZONA BEER WEEK There is a countdown clock on the web site for Arizona Beer Week (arizonabeerweek.com) and by the time you read this the numbers will show that there are around 30 days until Beer Week kicks off with the Strong Beer Festival. Sometime this

38

week the folks that run Arizona Beer Week, the Arizona Brewers Guild, tell us that the event calendar will be posted for all to see. However, as of our deadline, the events were not yet up. That’s okay, because we have some inside information as to the best events going on so you can start putting your calendar together now.

January 19th, 2012 - January 25th, 2012

First off, the Strong Beer Festival is a must. Held on February 18th at Steele Indian School Park (right off the light rail), this is the event that kicks off beer week. Last year, the event was marked by a torrential downpour, high winds and incredibly cold temperatures. Still, over 2300 people out of an expected 2700 braved the weather to enjoy what has come to be known as one of the top festivals in the state. The Brewers Guild keeps it small to prevent the lines associated with bigger festivals and the brewers that bring beer, always try to bring something special. This year we expect to see quite a few rarities (at least to Arizona) as well as a few brewers that don’t normally distribute in this state…yet. Don’t let the name scare you away. While

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Strong Beer is the focus, and all breweries are encouraged to have at least one higher ABV beer, there will be plenty of lower ABV beers there as well. And in case you missed it, the park is right off the light rail stop at Central and Indian School. For those of you that like to lay down a nice base of food before a festival both O.H.S.O Brewery in Arcadia and Sun Up Brewing at 3rd Street and Camelback will be offering beer breakfasts that day. You’ve got a few choices for Sunday the 19th. Both SanTan and Ska Brewing will be hosting pub crawls, but they’ll be doing it on bikes, allowing a little greater range. SanTan’s will start at the brewery Continued on Page 40...

by “King” James Swann

Hello again lads, this week let’s stay on the Local Train and chat about Epicenter Amber from SanTan Brewing in Chandler Arizona. Opened in 2007, SanTan is owned by brew master Anthony Canecchia. Anthony spent seven years at Four Peaks Brewing in Tempe before opening SanTan where he brews mostly American style ales.

BEER! SECTION

KEEPING IT LOCAL w/ EPICENTER AMBER

Epicenter is a dry, light bodied amber with a slightly nutty character reminiscent of much bigger nut brown styles. It pours a bright caramel colour with an off white head and delivers very nice lacing as your glass begins to empty. Epicenter is what Anthony refers to as a” Gateway Beer”, a beer for those stepping into the craft beer world for the first time. As a point of reference, think Fat Tire from New Belgium. Very much a session brew at 5.5% ABV. with very low bitterness, Epicenter is the beer to hand your best mate who drinks Coors Light and needs a Life Line! It Scores a low side 48 from 100 points on Ratebeer.com but remember this isn’t always the perfect indicator of a beers quality. Beer Geeks that “rate beers” tend to have moved beyond this particular style and therefore may not be considering this beers purpose in the larger picture. Epicenter is a great first brew for new craft drinkers and being a session beer, doesn’t take you out of the game after only a couple. Great food pairings include lighter fare such as a California style chicken sandwich w/ avocado, sweet BBQ wings or a stacked Club Sandwich w/ extra Bacon!Booze pairings include a quality Anejo Tequila or a Hot Toddy.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeverages.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

As I said last week, I’m going to spend the next few weeks Keeping It Local and you should as well. There’s no better way to show your love to our brothers and sisters in Beer here in AZ. Keep sending your comments and questions to Kingjamesswann@gmail.com and have a stellar week! January 19th, 2012 - January 25th, 2012

... continued from Page 38. and Ska will roll from TT Roadhouse in Scottsdale. If biking for your beer seems like too much work, head on over to Boulders on Broadway where they will feature their own mini-beer festival with seven or eight breweries and an opportunity to talk one on one with the brewery reps without the crowds associated with a bigger festival. Monday is relatively slow, but there will be a variety of tastings and pint nights everywhere from Total Wine in Gilbert to Whole Foods in North Scottsdale to BevMo in Happy Valley. The two big events for the evening are probably the Manless Monday event (for ladies only) at SanTan featuring beers paired with gourmet cheese sandwiches from Wedge and Bottle; and the Ska Brewing beer dinner at Mellow Mushroom in Tempe.

Tuesday of Beer Week is also Mardi Gras and what better place to celebrate than at Baby Kay’s at 21st Street and Camelback. Enjoy Fat Tuesday with Abita beer and some fresh crawfish just flown in from New Orleans. If Cajun isn’t your thing, AZ Wine Company in Scottsdale will have a beer dinner featuring Oskar Blues, and Oskar Blues will also be taking over the taps at Trophy’s Steakhouse in Queen Creek. Wednesday night the fun continues with tastings and pint nights at BevMo in Tempe, Total Wine in Gilbert, and Whole Foods on Mayo Boulevard. Look also for a Big Sky event at Old Chicago on Alma School, a Bell’s Promo at Taste of Tops and a Craft in Cans event at Cold Beer and Cheeseburgers in the Greyhawk area of North Scottsdale. Whole Foods in Chandler has an educational event where Crispin Ciders will match up with Left Hand Brewing and Breckenridge Brewing to show you how you can enhance your drinking experience by blending cider and beer to create new and exciting flavors. Thursday is when things start building up to the big finish. Anthem and Carefree get into the mix with events at Legends and AZ Wine Carefree. George and Dragon will be featuring Left Hand Milk Stout

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Nitro and for you downtown folks, Lost Leaf Gallery will have a Shmaltz Brewing event later in the evening. Two big events for the evening are taking place just 5.28 miles from each other. I know this because I am planning on being at both events and wanted to know how easy it would be to do that. So start at The Hungry Monk any time after 3:00 PM. Do this because Bell’s Brewing will be bringing their world famous Eccentric Day to Chandler. Look for

approximately 20 different Bell’s beers on tap and plan on dressing in your most eccentric outfit as this event will be all about the “different”. Now go up Dobson, across Ray to McClintock and head north to Elliot to check out Flanny’s where they will be hosting “Colorado Night”. Six different Colorado breweries will be on hand each pouring three of their beers. The secret here is that one of those beers from each brewery will be cask conditioned and gravity fed, a very special treat from the state that is known as the “Napa of Beer”. This event starts at 6:30, so start at the Monk and head to Flanny’s or the other way around, whatever you prefer. Just don’t miss either of these events. Don’t wear down now, because we still have two days of Awesome! left. Friday will feature Oskar Blues at Handlebar Pub and Grill in Apache Junction or you can also find Oskar Blues at Sun Devil Liquor. How about checking out the Bell’s event at Lux on Central or Bridgeport Brewing at Total Wine in Gilbert? If you are planning on a meal, hit up Trophy’s for their Alaskan Brewing dinner. If you have never experienced a beer dinner with Alaskan Brewing, this may be the place to be. Or if you prefer to hang out with more than one Continued on Page 41...

brewery, head over to Papago Brewing where the Brewers Table Shuffleboard tournament will take place. Have a beer and heckle your favorite brewery while they pair up with non-brewers in an effort to take home first prize. And, Moto will be bringing their Big IPA Festival in the evening. Saturday, start off again at O.H.S.O. for a nice breakfast as you once again fortify yourself for a beer festival. This time it is over in the parking lot at Papago where the Brewing Up Hope event will take place. Benefitting the MISS Foundation, annonprofit foundation committed to helping families discover hope and eventually heal from the trauma of a child’s death. So help out with a great cause and have some good beer while you are doing it. Also, at this festival will be the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the founding of Little Guy Distributing. This seminal craft distributor, now known as World Class Beer, was started by Bruce and C.B. McConnell in 2002 in order to bring high end craft and import beer to the

Arizona market place. They have always been recognized as the leader in craft beer and specialty imports in the state, so expect there to be a pretty good party within the festival going on.

BEER! SECTION

... continued from Page 40.

Don’t miss out on weeklong beer and food pairing specials at Garage Wine and Tap, Original Wineburger, Rico’s American Grille, Taps in Litchfield Park, Chop and Wok and more. Finally, expect to see Lauren Salazar, Sensory Specialist from New Belgium Brewing out and about at a few events which are still being planned. She is a world renowned expert in all things beer and is in constant demand to present at events everywhere. There you have it, a brief look at some of the key events each day of Beer Week. Check out the Beer Week web site for complete details and plan on attending as many events as you can. You have all day Sunday February 26th to recover from your week of festivities.

The world of extreme sports is often fraught with danger (hence the name), subsequently the use of safety equipment is in most cases a necessity. Some of the more hardened enthusiasts decide to shun the use of such equipment in search of a ‘purer’ experience. Here is an outline for safety equipment which should definitely not be left at home. In fact, to do so would in most cases result in it being the last activity you ever undertook. The phrase ‘safety first’ should always spring to 4:15 PM mind. The Cage – Shark Diving Having something between you and the jaws of a 5000lb great white shark is always a pretty good idea. Luckily for most shark divers that something is a steel cage, specifically designed for the purpose of viewing the incoming predators. Statistically fatal shark attacks on humans are extremely rare with the New York Times attributing only one fatality in 2009 to these alpha predators. A Torch – Caving Caving is considered by many their ultimate nightmare experience. Clambering down holes and traversing extremely perilous and confined conditions in the knowledge

that the route in cannot be used as the way out. Add to this the fact that without a torch or lamp you would be in complete darkness – it really does make your choice of batteries that little more important. A Life Jacket – Coasteering Coasteering is the sport of navigating yourself around rugged coastlines through the acts of swimming, climbing and diving/jumping. Originating in Wales, the sport is quickly gaining popularity amongst nature loving adventurers. The seas around Wales are pretty rough with strong currents a-plenty; not wearing a life jacket would be near suicidal. Surfboard – Big Wave Surfing To ride such big waves, riders turn to local surfboard makers who craft ‘guns’ specific to the breaks they are used to surfing. Using the right shape could be thought of as a security measure, as using the wrong ‘gun’ on a big wave could prove disastrous and in some cases fatal. Belay device – Climbing Whether you are a solo climber or you have a friend acting as

belayer for you, there cannot be a more important bit of safety kit for any climber. Specifically designed to act as a friction brake for falling climbers; belay devices single-handedly save thousands of lives each year. Mouthguard – Contact Sports The first mouthguard was developed in 1890. Nowadays most contact sports encourage the use of mouthguards. However, mouthguards aren’t just there to reduce damage to teeth and gums in the event of contact. In sports such as snowboarding and half-pipe skateboarding, mouthguards are used to prevent concussion from hits to the jaw. Local knowledge – Bull Running The annual festival in Spain revolves around one week of

Compass – Mountaineering Mountaineering is a sport associated with lots of safety equipment. None can be more important than the trusty compass. In conditions of ‘white out’ when no visual reference to the landscape can be made, using a compass could be your only way off.

Parachute – Base Jumping Base jumping is one of the most dangerous sports in the world. Since 1981 there have been 147 recorded fatalities. It goes without saying that the parachute is vitally important to ensuring you have a successful jump. Most base jumpers won’t allow anyone other than themselves to prep their parachute. The smallest issue could mean the difference between life and death.

festivities where at 8am daily, bulls are released through the town in celebration. Town records show foreigners have been attending since the 17th century. Unfortunately the festival is often marred with tragedy as alcohol and other substances cause partakers to make rash decisions. Get to the event early with a clear mind and knowledge of the route – as escaping could prove more valuable than reaching the end.

LIVE! SECTION ANTHRAX SET TO ROCK THE MARQUEE

Yet it only took a few days for Belladonna to breathe new life into it. “It came together quickly for us… it’s automatic,” he mused of their reunion and musical successes. “It was a natural transition for me.”

Marking their 30th anniversary, their 10th album, and their first album with Joey Belladonna in 20 years, some say that Anthrax is “back”. Whether or not they’ve ever gone anywhere is up for debate, but what’s obvious is that Worship Music is being touted as the “metal album of the year” and old-school fans are celebrating Belladonna’s return to the throne.

Belladonna has a cover band back east called “Chief Big Way” and can be found on Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, and various other places in cyberspace, and welcomes new fans. Right now though, he is focused on the tour with Anthrax, the fans and the music and is looking forward to rocking the Marquee.

Tuesday, January 24th with Death Angel and Testament

Yielding rave reviews, Worship Music had three lead singers during the making, and when Belladonna joined, the fate of both the band and the album was in question.

A WAR That Brings People Together

Friday, January 20th 2012 at Celebrity Theatre

WAR: What is it good for? Some of the most memorable hits of all time, including “Cisco Kid,” “Low Rider,” “Why Can’t We Be Friends,” “Slippin’ into Darkness” and “The World is a Ghetto.” WAR was the first successful musical crossover phenomenon that fused rock, jazz, Latin and R&B. Although WAR’S lyrics were sometimes political in nature (in keeping with their racially integrated lineup), their music almost always had a sunny, laid-back vibe emblematic of their Southern California roots, an enduring influence that has sold over 50 million records worldwide. The revered funk ensemble has racked up 17 gold, platinum or multi-platinum awards, including the triple platinum The World Is A Ghetto, which was crowned Pop Album of the Year in 1972 by Billboard Magazine.

Check out www.anthrax.com for more information about the band. Marquee Theatre 730 N. Mill Ave. in Tempe Earlier this year, Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) commemorated WAR’s 40-plus year legacy by making several albums available for digital download. Those that made their digital premieres were 1997’s Coleccion Latina, which brings together WAR’s favorite tracks for Latin fans, and two original 1979 albums, The Music Band and The Music Band 2. From “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” being played for the world via a U.S.-Soviet space mission to “Low Rider” being the theme for the nationally syndicated television shows Lopez Tonight and The George Lopez Show sitcom, the music of WAR spans cultures and generations, and continues to prove timeless. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets ($30 and $40) are still available at Celebrity Theatre or online at www. celebritytheatre.com. To charge by phone, call 602-267-1600 ext. 1. All tickets are subject to a surcharge. Celebrity Theatre is located just south of the 202 freeway, at 440 N. 32nd St., in Phoenix.

Ever go to a DJ concert to dance instead of a club? It’s one of the best dance parties you could ever attend and I highly recommend it. Sure, your ears may never hear a certain sound wave ever again but the pure energy and youthful memories created by such an experience will never leave you. Steve Aoki is the house this Thursday for his North American tour, Deadmeat, which means there will be major sweating going on in downtown Phoenix. Aoki and his dubstep prodigy, Datsik, are sure to keep their followers feeling beats throughout the show and leaving you with the impression of being more than alive with their mixes. I shake my head to those who are not familiar with Aoki. Fathered by the owner of restaurant, Benihana, and sister to supermodel, Devon, talent runs in this DJ’s family and keeps him innovative. Aoki’s label, Dim Mak Records, was founded when he was just 19 and has signed hipster-loving artists, MSTRKRFT, and The Bloody Beatroots. Trust that Aoki knows what he’s doing when it comes to making electro and house music that people love to get down to. He’s respected as one of our generation’s best DJs for a reason. Dig it. Thursday, January 19th. 8 pm. www.deadmeattour.com. $40 All Ages.

DJ Soloman at Zuma Zuma Grill on Mill has been around for a long time for a reason: people never fail to have a good time there. I personally spent many of my first legal drinking years at good ‘ol Zuma on various week and weekend nights just as I’m sure the majority of Sun Devils can relate to. This bar offers a more club-like experience than most of the other bars on Mill Avenue where you can dance and make merry with your friends without the pretentious tone that Scottsdale clubs can offer. Well-known Arizona DJ veteran, DJ Soloman spins tracks here every Friday to help add a soundtrack to your drunken Mill Ave escapade—whether you remember the songs or not is another story. DJ Soloman has shared stages with greats, Tiesto and Paul Van Dyk and has even opened for DJs Kaskade and Manufactured Superstars. Yeah, yeah,

you know about Zuma but I’m here to remind you that it’s still a great spot to party especially on Fridays when you get a good DJ without the cover price. Fridays. 10 pm – 2 am. Ages 21+

Drinking Liberally Tempe at Casey Moore’s Some people like to drink to get drunk so that they can relax and enjoy themselves. Others like to drink because it’s fun to have intelligent discussions over beverages. For a lot of people, alcohol seems to loosen the tongue up for a better, smoother relaying of ideas. Liquid confidence? Perhaps. If you’re left-leaning politically and have opinions that you’d like to share with other likeminded individuals, consider heading over to Casey Moore’s this week to put your two cents in. Drinking Liberally was founded in New York City in 2003 with the intentions of providing everyday citizens the opportunity to discuss and learn about other’s ideas surrounding politics over drinks. So if you’d like to feel somewhat “sophisticated” go to Casey’s on Thursday to learn and listen to the discussions of Democrats as you drink. P.S. If you’re conservative, stop pouting. I’ll soon find something cool for you too. Thursday, January 19th. 6 pm. www. livingliberally.org/drinking

* July 16, 2004: Martha Stewart is sentenced to five months in prison (and five months of house arrest) for a stock sale. According to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Stewart avoided a loss of $45,673 by selling all 3,928 shares of her ImClone Systems stock on December 27, 2001, after receiving material, nonpublic information from Peter Bacanovic, who was Stewart’s broker at Merrill Lynch.

Martha Helen Stewart (née Kostyra), is an American business magnate, media personality, author, and magazine publisher and founder of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. She has gained success through her intelligence, perseverance, simply put; her pure resolve to bring to fruition her visions. On the cover of the May 1995 issue, New York Magazine declared her as “the definitive American woman of our time”.

Although the media widely speculated that the situation would effectively be the end of her media empire, Stewart began a comeback campaign in 2005, with her company returning to profitability the following year. In the months that followed, Stewart drew heavy media scrutiny, including a Newsweek cover headlined “Martha’s Mess”. Notably on June 25, 2002, CBS anchor Jane Clayson grilled Stewart on the air about ImClone during her regular segment on The Early Show. Stewart continued chopping cabbage and famously quipped, “I just want to focus on my salad”.

While in confinement, she took a job and became an informal liaison between the administration and her fellow inmates. The People special, Scandals! That Rocked America stated “Some expected America’s goddess of domestic perfection to fall into terminal despair. Instead, with the drive that would make her a billionaire, Stewart took her lemon of a sentence and made lemonade. Heck, she made a lemon soufflé.” NEWS OR NEWS WORTHY???
