While the classic film Yankee Doodle Dandy starring James Cagney chronicled the life and times of George M. Cohan, the rousing musical GEORGE M!, now at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre in Mesa, truly reflects the spirit of this colorful character by showcasing his unforgettable music with timeless tunes like “You’re A Grand Old Flag, “Over There,” and “Give My Regards to Broadway.” During the second act of this high energy musical, you can't help but feel patriotic during the robust rendition of “You’re A Grand Old Flag,” superbly sung by the entire cast of the Broadway Palm’s production of GEORGE M!. When the audience joins in by waving miniature American flags the pageantry of the moment extends beyond the stage. All in all, it’s a one-of-a-kind experience that quickens your heartbeat, brings a smile to your face and harkens back to the pride you felt at a Fourth of July parade in your youth. GEORGE M! follows the life of the first superstar of the American musical theatre, George M. Cohan,

over a 60-year period from his childhood on the vaudeville circuit with his family as "The Four Cohans", to New York where he starts his 25-year complete control of the Broadway stage. Known as "the man who owned Broadway" in the decade before World War I, Cohan, eloquently played by John Ramsey, is considered the father of American musical comedy. He transformed the Broadway variety show into a book-driven musical with a plot. GEORGE M! runs Tuesdays through Sundays until Saturday, April 10th. Adult ticket prices range from $45 to $54 and include a buffet meal. Tickets for all children 12 and under are

Humidor for the Frugal Traveler OK, you’re traveling and you don’t want to lug your $250 humidor around the airport. The best alternative for the frugal cigar smoker is a common Tupperware container with a slice of cedar wood inside to give the stogies a humidor-like taste. Place a moisture device (humidifying sponge, etc.), inside and poke a hole in the lid to let the excess moisture out or you will have moldy cigars in no time. Of course, while this will work, we don’t recommend bringing your handy little “Tuppidor” to the next country club gathering or cigar tasting. You might just want to make that your little secret.

She’s Out of My League… or Maybe Not By Randy Montgomery On a scale of one to ten, how do you rate yourself in terms of looks? Are you a ten? Do you consider yourself more of a five or six? The point is that most “fives” typically aren’t wanted by a “nine” or a “ten.” But, one can never say never. That is the premise of the new comedy She’s Out of My League starring Jay Baruchel (Knocked Up), Nate Torrence (Get Smart) and Alice Eve (Sex and the City Part 2). The script, co-written by Mesa’s own Sean Anders (Never Been Thawed, Sex Drive) delivers non-stop laughs.

12

Kirk (Baruchel) and his buddies Devon (Torrence), Stainer (TJ Miller) and Jack (Mike Vogel) work at the Pittsburg airport in different positions. These good friends manage to get through their jobs while fantasizing about the hot women that pass through daily. Kirk considers himself a “five.” One day, a beautiful goddess walks through security. She’s a perfect ten! She would never go out with any of them, or so they think. It turns out Molly (Eve) is into Kirk and asks him out for dinner. Kirk wrestles with the March 11th, 2010 - March 17th, 2010

issue of being good enough for Molly which puts a damper on what should otherwise be a perfect relationship. While the characters in the film base their potential mates on this so-called grading scale, the actors themselves may or may not necessarily believe it to be true. “In terms of the movie, I have no problems saying I am a five. But it’s not all about physicality,” says Nate Torrence. “But having a personality that definitely works for you. So I don’t know how much the rating system really holds up in real life.” What does Jay Baruchel think? “I’m just judgmental period. I just judge everyone.” While Jay didn’t assign himself a grade, in terms of personality, he had no problem jokingly saying, “I love me.”

Alice Eve, who plays the “perfect ten” was just as apprehensive. “She was so nervous about playing a ten. She kept questioning if she really was. But at the same time, she was aware that in the script that it wasn’t all about her looks. She wasn’t into all of the superficial stuff,” explains Torrence. Like the characters Kirk and Devon, Baruchel and Torrence are much like their characters in real life, especially when being asked about the film. “With this movie, I feel we have this underdog mentality,” claims Torrence. “People go into the movie with this preconceived notion of what kind of movie it is. The trailer and the poster, it looks like its some guy flick with gross out humor. People are surprised that it has heart and that it’s a romantic comedy.” The film has humor and a lot of it. In fact, there will be a scene involving a little “manscaping” that you will talk about for days, but it offers so much more. Baruchel’s most memorable moment is one of those touching sequences, “My favorite moment in the entire flick, is a quiet little moment; the first time that Kirk gets to meet Alice’s character and he mutters under his breath, ‘Princess Jasmine.’ She’s Out of My League is a perfect date movie. But it’s also a perfect movie for 2am when you get back from the bar.”

“The Yellow Handkerchief”, a story of newfound love… Movie Review & Interview by Stan Robinson With big budget, mainstream films taking center stage, “The Yellow Handkerchief” is a breath of fresh air with a central theme of reconnecting with the basic aspect of our humanity, love. Director Udayan Prasad presents a story, with rural Louisiana as the backdrop, of four people who are at crucial points in their lives. I call these types of films “slice of life” movies where we join characters at a point in time, stay with them for a while, and leave… It’s a lazy afternoon in a small Louisiana town. A young teenager named Martine (Kristen Stewart from the ‘Twilight’

With nowhere particular in mind, they get on the road. Just when the uneasiness heightens for Martine, they meet Brett (William Hurt), a loner, humble middle age man just released from prison who needs a ride. In the midst of the pouring rain, the unlikely trio sets out, each person unsure of the destination, as Brett is unwillingly pulled into the mentoring role of the adult of reason. As Brett is adjusting to his freedom and issues of his own, they meet May (Maria Bello), a woman who has ‘turned off’ her emotions from a previous relationship and holds the world at bay. There’s more along with my fascinating conversation with director Udayan Prasad as he shares insight on his latest movie, “The Yellow Handkerchief”, at www.ScreenScene. org Starring William Hurt, Maria Bello, Kristen Stewart, Eddie Redmayne, Emmanuel Cohn, Nurith Cohn, and Veronica Russell. Directed by Udayan Prasad. Written by Erin Dignam. Samuel Goldwyn Films release. Rated PG-13 for sexual content, some violence, language and thematic elements. Runtime: 102 minutes. # # #

“North Face” “A Prophet”, French foreign film Oscar® nominee…

Based on a true story, North Face is a suspenseful adventure film about a competition to climb the most dangerous rock face in the Alps. Set in 1936, as Nazi propaganda urges the nation’s Alpinists to conquer the unclimbed north face of the Swiss Alps, the Eiger, two reluctant German climbers begin their daring climb to the top. Subtitled in English.

Review by Stan Robinson “A Prophet” is a film that is not for the ‘faint of heart’. We experience, first hand, the reality of penal systems and how one is forced into a way of life inside of those walls, and the effect it has on Malik a young Arab man (Tahar Rahim) who is sent to a French prison at 19, and how its effects are transferred to his lifestyle on the outside. While in prison, he’s chosen by Cesar Luciani (Niels Arestrup), the feared kingpin of the prison’s reigning Corsican gang, to do his bidding. In order to survive, he learns his lessons well, at the expense of compromising on issues that tear at his very soul. As he approaches his day of release after a 6-year sentence, Malik has learned his lessons well. The question now becomes, can he pursue the charmed life he dreams once he’s out, and are the powers of prophecy that are attributed to him after surviving a bizarre car crash, an indication of his future? “A Prophet”, in French with English subtitles, is a stark view of the human element and the ability to adapt to survive, and is an exceptional movie with an Oscar nomination in the foreign language film category. Starring Tahar Rahim, Niels Arestrup, Adel Bencherif, Hichem Yacoubi, Reda Kateb, Jean-Philippe Ricci, Gilles Cohen, and Antoine Basler.

ST. PATTY’S ON THE PROWL St. Patrick’s Day Hotspots here in the Valley “St. Patrick’s Day Party” Set for Wednesday, March 17 at O’Donoghue’s Irish Pub in North Scottsdale

Pub is One of Few that Pours the Perfect Pint of Guinness Arizona’s authentic Irish Pub, O’Donoghue’s, is celebrating the St. Patrick’s Day holiday by hosting a special “St. Patrick’s Day Party” event on Wednesday, March 17. O’Donoghue’s is located at 20469 N. Hayden Road on the southeast corner of Hayden Road and Thompson Peak Parkway, just minutes north of the 101 Freeway. The popular north Scottsdale pub is fondly named after O’Donoghue’s Pub - still found today on Merrion Row in Dublin. The festive party begins at 6 a.m. with a traditional Irish breakfast

consisting of sausages, crispy rashers (Irish bacon), black and white pudding, eggs, grilled tomato, traditional Irish chips and baked beans served with bread and butter. O’Donoghue’s is one of only a few authentic Irish pubs in Arizona that pours the perfect pint of Guinness beer as recommended by the brewery in Ireland. The restaurant houses a nitrogen generator that yields 75 percent nitrogen and 25 percent carbon dioxide, resulting in a much smoother, richer taste. Most bars in Arizona push mostly carbon dioxide. A free shuttle bus will run between O’Donoghue’s Irish Pub and Harold’s Cave Creek Corral from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. For more information, call O’Donoghue’s Irish Pub at (480) 585-6329 or visit www. scottsdaleirishpub.com.

egg to them and named them “Steak Tartare”…Tartar being the Russian word for Mongol. The Russians then brought this delicacy to Germany where it ended up in the town of Hamburg, where, lo and behold, somebody thought to cook it. The early Hamburg steaks were nothing like the burgers of today. They were tough cuts of meat, shredded and mixed with bread crumbs and onion. Sometime in the 19th Century,

German immigrants to America threw this steak between a couple of slices of bread for convenience and the modern hamburger was born. So much for history, let’s get to modern times and figure out where beer comes in. Burgers have always been a staple of backyard barbecues, and so has beer. It’s only natural that they are thought of together. Continued on Page 35...

Beer and Burgers

time to cover this topic?

by Chuck Noll

While everybody may think they know the history of the hamburger, few realize that its ancestry actually dates back to the Thirteenth Century and Genghis Khan and his “Golden Horde” or the Mongols, as we know them. While they were off conquering two thirds of the known world, they had very little time to stop, dismount and have a meal. So they would use lamb or mutton scrapings which they formed into a patty (the better to eat with one hand while riding) and slipped it under their saddle, where it would tenderize. They would then eat the meat raw after battle. Several years later, Khan’s grandson went in to the family business and invaded Russia. The Russian people adopted the raw meat patties, added raw onion and

Burgers are also easily prepared food for taverns with small kitchens, and they have always been popular with the working class. Beer, of course, has long been thought of as a working class beverage. Beer and burgers have changed their image over the past decade. You can get gourmet bison, elk, or even ostrich burgers at many restaurants, just as you can get great beers at variety of places. Before we ruffle any feathers, we are aware that there are literally thousands of great burgers out there, and many of the restaurants that carry them serve great beer. No argument there. But let’s examine the modern phenomenon of burger bars, places where the signature dish is a gourmet burger, and carry world class beer to support it. There are probably places that did it earlier, but one of the first restaurants that came to our attention was Father’s Office in Santa Monica, CA. Described as one of the early gastropubs, restaurants where beer has a focus with the food, their signature dish

is the office burger. Paired with any of their 36 draft beers, it’s a treat for anyone. In Arizona, one of the first gourmet burger places to open up was Delux at 32nd Street and Camelback in Phoenix. Delux offers 40 taps, all craft and import, along with two outstanding burger choices, and they have added everything from gourmet hot dogs to sake marinated fish. The concept proved so popular that they had to open a storefront just to handle their takeout business. Before all these places, however, there was another one that specialized in burgers, Original Wineburger located at 19th Avenue and Bethany Home. They may have been the originator of the gourmet burger. Spraying down the burgers with a red wine while they are cooking lends a unique juiciness and flavor to these patties. The selection committee meets between the Thursday and Sunday prior to the date selected for the tournament’s first game. Its job is to filter out the teams deserving of an invitation. The decisions are announced on television during Selection Sunday.

TO DO LIST:

1) Cancel ugly Tempe apartment lease 2) Live Like a ROCK STAR at Dorsey Place!

The Night Owl BY MARIA TOURTCHANINOVA

Ahh St. Patrick’s day, the time of year I crave Lucky Charms cereal even more than usual. The fact of the matter is that basically every Irish and non-Irish bar is having a blowout party. I have narrowed it down to what I would think would be a darn good time. And someone please think of a wittier shirt to wear than “kiss me I’m Irish.” Stop lying to me!

Sales by Geis Realty, LLC

Dubliner Irish Pub and Restaurant This authentic Irish pub will be holding their party inside this year versus the usual closed off parking lots. Personally I like this better as it adds to the atmosphere. A variety of live bands will be performing all day as well as Irish dancers and other fun random happenings. Expect it to be a packed Guinness filled party! 602.867.0984 Casey Moore’s Oyster House One of my favorite Tempe bars; this place has a huge outside area that’s always packed with college kids on weekends and always leads to a good time. Casey Moore’s stands out to me for 2 reasons: 1. They have oysters (yum) and 2. On St. Patrick’s Day FLOGGING MOLLY will be making an appearance after 10pm to meet and greet their loyal fans after their Tempe Beach Park concert. Freebies and other giveaways will add to the festivities. 480.968.9935 Skeptical Chymist Restaurant and Pub Scottsdale’s first Irish bar will be serving up an Irish breakfast 8am10am to start off the festivities. After 4pm there is a $10 cover to get into the beer filled block party stretching out into the parking lot. Live music headlined by PHEED starts at 3pm and goes till 2am. As any worthy block party, it will be filled with giveaways and promo girls from Baileys and Bushmills. Why is

this worth mentioning? Because people tend to forget that promo girls usually give out free liquor samples! YEY! 480.609.8677 Murphy’s Law This place will be turned into one big Irish Carnival! Complete with carnival games such as a dunk tank, prizes and Irish dancing. Better yet, last year’s Jameson ring-toss can get you 2 tickets to Ireland! WHAT! Who wants to be on my team! Irish breakfast starts at 8am while at12 pm the beer gardens open and the variety of bands gets the party going. There will be a $10 cover. Call 480.812.1588 DEVOURED Sat 13th & Sun 14th. Before you lose some dignity over a mass of green beer, enjoy a classy weekend. The Phoenix Art Museum is hosting their annual culinary festival. The last culinary event I went to still wakes me up at night, the drool does anyway. Imagine the top restaurants preparing mini versions of their signature dishes. I mean each tasty morsel excels the next! And no it’s not cheap - but think of it like going to an expensive restaurant yet better! A variety of delicacies, live music, beer and wine pairing seminars, and free access to the Phx Art Museum display. Awesome. 11am to 4pm visit www. phxart.org/devoured

If you know good tequila, you are already familiar with the locally produced, 3 Amigos Tequila brand. Their blanco, anejo and reposado tequilas are quickly converting even die-hard supporters of other tequilas after just one taste. But put your shot glass down for a moment and let’s talk Margaritas. A great margarita requires a great tequila, and while you may love their tequila, you may not be aware that 3 Amigos also has a sister company called Margarita Sensations. Margarita Sensations develops all natural margarita mixes using agave nectar. Margarita Sensations Agave Nectar is made with the same Blue Agave Tequilana Weber that is used to make tequila.

Quality is our signature www.3AmigosTequila.com

Agave nectar has many great traits. It is about a third less on the Glycemic Scale compared to sugar cane and one and a half times sweeter than sugar cane. Because 3 Amigos Tequila

is superb, regular margarita mixes simply were not adequate. When they couldn’t find one that truly complimented the tequila, they created their own. The AllNatural Margarita Sensations mix comes in two flavors. The regular mix is made with water, lemon juice, lime juice, agave nectar, and cane sugar. The second is the Organic mix, made with water, lime juice, and agave nectar. The organic mix pairs with the 3 Amigos Organic Blanco (Yes…A true organic tequila!), creating the first fully organic margarita! 3 Amigos and Margarita Sensations are the official tequila and margarita of the Fiesta Bowl and Tempe Block Party for two years running. Ask for them in your favorite grocery or liquor store.

THE JOHN CORBETT BAND LIVE AT HAROLD’S CAVE CREEK CORRAL Actor John Corbett is best known for his roles in Sex and the City, Northern Exposure, and the hit films, My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Raising Helen Actor John Corbett and his country band return to Harold’s Cave Creek Corral for a special performance on Thursday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m. Known for taking country music’s earthy emotionalism and giving it a rowdy, rocking kick, The John Corbett Band had such a great time performing at Harold’s in July of last year, they were excited for another chance to entertain an appreciative, fun crowd of fans. Advance general admission tickets are available at www.Ticketmaster. com for $20; Tickets cost $25 at the door. Fans can also purchase VIP tickets for $50, which include admission to the concert, a 6 p.m. dinner, and a “meet and greet” with John Corbett. For general admission, doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets can be

purchased at Harold’s Cave Creek Corral, 6895 E. Cave Creek Road, or by calling (480) 488-1906. Danny Piacquadio, co-owner of Harold’s Cave Creek Corral, encouraged fans to purchase tickets early since the July concert was fully booked. “While John is best known as an actor, his fans also appreciate him for his music. We’re expecting another big crowd, so buy your tickets today while they are still available.” Corbett has always brought an easy grace to his roles, whether in the acclaimed TV series Sex and the City and Northern Exposure or in the hit films My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Raising Helen. His music carries the same natural, down-to-earth spirit. “Music has always been central to my life, much more so than acting,” Corbett said. “Acting is how I make my living. Music has always been a passion. It’s something I love, something I can’t live without.” For information, call (480) 4881906 or visit www.haroldscorral.com.
