Could there be a cure for Cancer? What if you discovered the cure for Cancer? This is the premise for Actors Theatre’s production of SECRET ORDER now playing at Stage West in the Herberger Theatre Center. Playwright Bob Clyman has fashioned an edgy story of power and intrigue into a subject that has affected virtually every person walking the streets of America. But there’s more to this picture than just DNA. There’s research, and money, and tumors to trick, and R Cells, and Pfizer and Merck, not to mention fraud. Director Matt Wiener has put this tricky story, with a disease no one believes will ever be cured, into a lively and dramatic dogfight between the forces of truth and deception. Starring as William Shumway, our sincere researcher on a mission to find the cure is Cale Epps. Cale is focused and caring as the man who would be king of the protocols. Keeping his story valuable is Mark DeMichele, as the corporate spin doctor Robert Brock. Mark is polished and concerned for the right reasons until Alice Curiton, played by Jessica Weaver, arrives to stimulate the research ideas. THE LARAMIE PROJECT Phoenix Theatre, Greasepaint Youtheatre & QSpeak Greasepaint Youtheatre in collaboration with Q Speak, presented the THE LARAMIE PROJECT this past weekend at the Stagebrush Theatre in Scottsdale. Originally developed by Moises Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project, this dramatic presentation recounts the events and people of Laramie Wyoming, after the November 1998 hate crime murder of Matthew Sheppard, a young gay man who had moved to Laramie. Director Maren Maclean Mascarelli created a strong and revealing production using this hate crime history as a teaching tool to understand the emotions of fear and hate, while embracing the hope of acceptance for all of humanity. But this production shines with the passion and focus of fourteen talented young cast members. They captured the feelings and moments of this tragic story from Laramie like wise veterans. Bravo to Annissa, Aurora, Brianna, Charlie, Danny, Rylie, Isaiah, Emily, Nick, Tyler, Maggie, Paul, Liz and Nik, for a heartfelt and impressive display of dramatic theatre. We can look forward to more great performances from this company of actors in the coming months and years. For us, there were a lot of ‘firsts’, including the first moon landing. Music is a prominent factor for ‘firsts’. Every time I hear the tunes “I Love Rock & Roll” and “Crimson and Clover”, made household sounds by Joan Jett in 80’s, are reminders of the forceful, creative progress of individuality. The movie “The Runaways” captures that time when history was being made all around us… “The Runaways” is based on leadsinger Cherie Currie’s (an original member of the band) book, ‘Neon Angel’, which chronicles her experiences as a rock star. The years from 1975 – 1977 are highlighted as teenage girls, living near Hollywood, CA, form the band. Women in Beer – Part 1 by Chuck Noll
of the Pharohs of Egypt, women brewed in a part of the kitchen called “the pure”. The beer produced was called “Hekt” and was exported throughout the world. Through the times of Christ and beyond, women continued to brew beer. As recently as the 13th century, only 8 percent of the brewers in England were men. The women would brew in their home and put a broom handle over their door to show that they had extra beer for sale. Native African women would also put this “ale-stake” out to indicate beer was available,
Ninkasi…ever hear of her? Probably not, but she might very well be the first brewer, or in this case brewster, as females who brew are known. Ninkasi is an ancient Sumerian Goddess, and her purview is beer. She brewed daily and supposedly produced some very fine beer, although there were no beer judges around back then, so who knows. In 1989, the ancient Sumerian style of beer was reproduced faithfully and was much different than the beer we know. Made with bread, additional malt, honey and dates, and without use of any hops or other bittering agents, it was very sweet. The beer was so thick with impurities that some method needed to be developed to get the liquid through the sludge. The drinking straw is another invention that occurred because of beer. The point is that women have been involved in brewing for centuries, and in some instances have taken the lead role in brewing.
Women from the time of Ninkasi on have always been actively involved in all aspects of the brewing process. In South America, in the Amazon Rain Forest, women still chew cereal grain to introduce the enzyme ptyalin, spitting the chewed “mash” into buckets where the ptyalin begins the fermentation process. For early mankind this beer was a valuable dietary staple, a source of protein and vitamins. The tradition has continued and only women chew the grain to produce this unique beer. During the times

Throughout Medieval Europe, women continued to play a large role in brewing, although in an act of chauvinism, they could only hold a license in their husband’s name. It was during these times that Saint Brigid through prayer and faith supposedly changed bath water into beer for the benefit of a colony of thirsty lepers. Interview with Larry Bell Larry Bell, founder of Bell’s Brewery was recently in Phoenix to take in some Spring Training baseball games and enjoy the beauty of our area. Along the way, he brought us some cases and kegs of his spectacular Batch 9000 Ale and introduced it to a great audience at Papago Brewing. On our word of honor, we did our best to get time to interview Larry, but the crowds clamoring for him were too impatient, so instead we offer some insights into the evening and the man. Larry Bell started a homebrew supply shop in 1983. By 1985 they were brewing and selling beer and are now the oldest brewery east of Boulder, Colorado. They are the
thirteenth largest craft brewer in the country and the number three best selling brewery in his home market. To interpret that, rarely does a local brewer eclipse sales figures of one of the three large national breweries, but Bell’s does just that. Anyhow, Larry Bell showed up at Papago after coming from a twelve mile hike and looking in need of refreshment. He immediately ordered an Oberon, since Arizona is one of only two states where the beer is available year round. The first group of Michiganders approached him to tell him how much they loved his beer. Larry was gracious and chatted with each one of them before making his way to a seat near the bar. This would become the recurring theme

learning to brew with what was available to them. Corn, pumpkins, artichokes, oats, wheat, honey, and molasses were all part of these early brews. In the late 18th century, as brewing became more commercial, it moved out of the home and women started to fade from the brewing scene. When homebrewing returned in the late 1970’s, so did women brewers. As craft beer started to take off the following decade, women brewers and brewery owners were right there as well. Today there are literally hundreds, if not thousands of women in the brewing industry. Kim Jordan of New Belgium may be one of the best known of these women in brewing. New Belgium, in fact, has a strong feminine presence throughout their company. Lauren Salazar is their sensory expert and their staff is brimming with other women in key positions, especially the Beer Rangers, who are responsible for representing the brand throughout their territories. In Arizona, three of the five Beer Rangers are ladies. Lost Coast Brewing was one of the first breweries founded by women today. Barbara Groom still runs the business and keeps a close eye on things. Denise Jones at Moylan’s is another well known brewster, along with Molly Browning at Jolly Pumpkin. In Europe, women are also starting to reclaim their brewing roles. Hildegard van Ostaden, who along with her husband Bas owns Urthel Brewery, is one of the only brewsters in Belgium. Have women made a difference in the industry? Absolutely. Teri Fahrendorf, brewer at Steelhead and Bulldog in Eugene, OR, was one of the groundbreakers. Initially, men were concerned about her ability to do the heavy physical work required in brewing. She showed them that the job could get done by working smarter, using brains not brawn. Result? The male brewers she supervises work smarter too, and sustain fewer back injuries. Fahrendorf was also instrumental in founding The Pink Boot Society, so named for the boots that the brewers wear, consists solely of women in the industry and now numbers in excess
of 300 ladies. The group is dedicated to supporting women in all aspects of the brewing industry. Locally, women are also making an impact. Leah Huss of Papago Brewing is one of the local women in brewing, and is also considered by many to be one of the most knowledgeable beer people in the state. She supervises the massive amounts of great beer that flow in and out of the restaurant. Lori Eccles owns and operates Sun Devil Liquors, long considered one of the best locations for beer in Arizona. Key buyers for AJ’s Fine Foods, Whole Foods, Sunflower Markets and BevMo are female as well. They help to keep the state stocked with great beer. Surely nobody can deny the impact of women on brewing throughout history, but what about the ladies on the other side of the bar? Next week we will look at women consumers of beer and their involvement in the growing craft beer movement.

of the night as almost everybody in the bar seemed to be from Michigan and all had experiences with Bell’s that they remembered fondly. Larry shared memories as well, frequently talking about favorite bars or fishing holes in whatever hometown his conversation partner might have been from. It truly seemed as if Larry knew everybody and every place in that state. Larry also was keenly interested in the local homebrewers, as he spent a good bit of time speaking with several of them. A very personable man, Larry would have had a 30 minute conversation with everyone waiting to speak with him if time had permitted. As the line to speak with him came and went, and drawings were held for the giveaways, there was never a chance to grab even five minutes with him for an interview. He was simply too busy speaking with people who buy his beer and support his business. In the long run, maybe that says more about Larry Bell than an interview ever could.

THE UFC: COMING SOON TO A THEATER NEAR YOU CHUCK LIDDELL AMONG HOSTS OF HISTORICAL UFC EVENT LIVE IN THEATERS As the Ultimate Fighting Championship continues to make a big push to get mixed martial arts sanctioned in New York, it is using UFC 111: St-Pierre vs. Hardy as a springboard to build support, at least among fans. The UFC will hold a press conference with public question and answer session prior to UFC 111 in Newark, N.J., at Radio City Music Hall in New York. In addition to that, there is more in the plans for the MMA juggernaut.

UFC 111 marks the promotion’s first event that will be available across North America in movie theaters. To March 18th, 2010 - March 23rd, 2010

WRESTLEMANIA SET TO INVADE THE VALLEY OF THE SUN University of Phoenix Stadium to Host WrestleMania XXVI World Wrestling Entertainment’s WrestleMania, the “Super Bowl of pro wrestling,” will bring its highflying athletes and earth-shaking pyrotechnics to University of Phoenix Stadium on March 28, 2010. WrestleMania is historically a fan favorite. The spectacle attracted more than 80,000 fans to Detroit’s Ford Field in 2007, and nearly 75,000 to Orlando’s Citrus Bowl in 2008. University of Phoenix Stadium, in Glendale, is expected to seat at least 65,000 for WrestleMania XXVI. World Wrestling Entertainment is the latest organization to choose Greater Phoenix as the site of its signature fan event. The National Football League selected University of Phoenix Stadium as the site of the Super Bowl in February 2008, and the National Basketball Association held its 2009 All-Star Game at US Airways Center in February 2009. The WrestleMania Kickoff Party at Westgate City Center in Glendale takes place March 19, 2010 from 6-10 p.m. and will include Superstar and Diva appearances, autograph signings, live entertainment, prizes, face painting, and a chance to win floor-seat tickets to the March 28 WrestleMania event. Westgate will be showing SmackDown on its 30-by-50-foot Plaza LED screen (the LAST televised WWE event before to the self-proclaimed Super Bowl of professional wrestling). Admission to this event is free.

Last week I had the pleasure of going to a few new places I had not ventured to before. I also saw Avatar before it left the Imax… and I cried. That’s right... and I’m man enough to admit that. The Lost Leaf I heard about this place randomly, as in I listened into someone else’s conversation. *Ahem.* As I went off on a search to find it downtown I got distracted by a vegan donut sign and got lost- ironic? Little did I know that the little house across the street was not an artsy house party but The Lost Leaf itself. Why had no one thought of this prior I do not know. Walking in was like walking into a house party where you don’t know anyone, but there is a live band so you can just pretend you came there for the music. It’s a small place with brick walls lined with local art. The lit up bar holds over 120 international beers, ciders and wines. YUM. And all at great prices! Come here with a group of your friends or make some new ones after that familiar buzz kicks in. After all there’s no attitude here. I was there Wed. night and for some reason everyone had beards. Needless to say I felt left out. The vibe was chill but the rock band made sure it was kept alive and going. Sunday night is jazz night and I’ll be back to check out what sort of atmosphere it brings in. The Lost Leaf is open 7 nights a week with live music every night! The ClubHouse Music Venue Last Friday was my first time venturing in. Why have I never been here before? Oh yeah cause there’s no corporate advertising selling itself out. This place is underground with some of the best local and national touring bands making their way through. Like any rock venue worthy to call itself one, the interior is open, dark, and beckoning. Black paint covers the walls leading to good size stage at the end of the room. Well, if you can call it a “room” …it fits 600people! The band that Friday night was rock/ reggae performing shirtless against the red and green stage lights - how very festive. Right under the stage you have your chance to get out your 9 to 5 rage in the mosh-pit. Luckily for me and my vodka/cran, it wasn’t a heavy metal band. A huge bar divides the room with 21 and over to the back where there’s space to kick it and enjoy the show if you’re more on the chill side or if you have a stagediving phobia. However, finish your drink and make your way back up to the front to catch the show front row. An average of 5 bands play per night leading up to the headlining band. This gives you time to chat up your friends, hit on some people and then go rock out with your non-conformism out. And yes I have realized my quotes are really cool sometimes. Chandler Jazz Festival Stirring Up A Buzz March 26-27, 2010 On March 26-27, 2010, the 11th Annual Chandler Jazz Festival will once again take over the sidewalks and businesses of downtown Chandler. The free event features both indoor and outdoor performances by some of the best musical talent in Arizona, and complimented by main stage performances headlined by some of the finest worldwide touring musicians in the current jazz scene. The two-day festival will involved 12 venues, 33 bands, more than 145 jazz musicians, including Nick Manson and the Festival Allstars on Friday night and the New Orleans band Bleu Orleans headlining the Saturday lineup. The Chandler Jazz Festival main stage performances run from 4:45-9:15 p.m. on Friday, March 26, and from noon-9:15 p.m. on Saturday, March 27. However, some performances inside downtown businesses or on downtown sidewalks will start as early as 11 a.m. on Saturday, and continue as late as 2 a.m. on both nights. The Man’s Guide to Dressing Sharp and Turning Heads
By The Feisty Fashionista Spring is right around the corner and with it brings an onslaught of new fashion trends. Bold, brightly colored ties should be on your radar. It’s what’s hot for Spring and a must have for the hip guy who is in the know. If you are conservative this is your chance to step outside of that box ever so slightly and instead of your boring basic tie paired with your solid color shirt and trousers you can punch things up a notch by adding a blast of color to your look with a tie that demands attention. If you are a cutting edge fashionista you can pair that bold tie with another hot new look this Spring; paisley. Yes, paisley. If you are not feeling the paisley, try it anyway. Why? You’ll look cool and if nothing else your paisley shirt will be a conversation starter which, if you are single, is never a bad thing.
There is another trend I feel I must warn you about. Note, I am not endorsing this one. It showed up in London on the catwalk of major designers recently and I am here to say I hope it stays there. You might, and I cringe as I write this, see guys in casual suits with their trousers cuffed several times over in an attempt to mimic the clam digger look. I kid you not. It is suppose to be a loose cuff and rolled just enough so that only a bit of the sock shows as one is walking. I am reporting it as a fashion “Don’t”. Please DON’T go there. Married or single you will not score any points with this look. Yes, I want you to turn heads but only because you look sharp and emit an air of sophistication. Also, watch out for the color yellow to show up randomly in an otherwise dark look. And now for some quick tips: 1) Square- toed dress shoes are out, round is now the look. 2) Ditch the box pleated dress shirt it makes you look like a hunch back. Choose side pleat or no pleat instead.
