ARTS! THE GLASS MENAGERIE Arizona Theatre Company March 25th – April 11th, 2010 In the 1930s in a small tenement apartment in St. Louis, the Wingfield family awaits your visit. The mother, Amanda, lives in an illusion of recapturing her faded Southern Belle glory, her daughter Laura lives in a fantasy world of delicate glass figurines, and her son Tom dreams poetically of a world beyond the back stoop. When Tom brings home a Gentleman Caller to meet his sister, The Glass Menagerie weaves these lives into a heart-stopping dance of hopes pursued and dreams betrayed. Considered by many to be Tennessee Williams’ greatest play, The Glass Menagerie is an achingly beautiful story of longing and love that has

touched generations of theatergoers with its sparkling, delicate radiance. Visit www.aztheatreco.org for more information. Phoenix: March 25 – April 11, 2010

Nick@ Night By Nick Connell THE HOBBIT at Valley Youth Theatre in Phoenix Bobb Cooper and the Valley Youth Theatre opened the shire and the forest of J.R.R. Tolkien’s THE HOBBITT last weekend in dramatic fashion. Director Jessica Graeber took us back in time to the land of Goblins, Elf’s, Dragons Wizards, and of course the Hobbits, leading us on a mystical journey full of surprises and adventure. Leading the way in this quest for the ring is Maxx Carlisle-King as Bilbo the Hobbit. King’s talent shines bright again as he maneuvers through the dangers and tests of middle earth. Also keeping the Tolkien tradition moving with wild character arch’s is Bransen Gates as Gollum. His squeamish sounds and physical contortions were intense as he pined for his ‘precious’. But the Hobbit would not be complete without wise old Gandalf, played by the regal William Michael Wyss. William played the wizard with a magical touch and presence. Add in a warm and likable cast of characters from the forests and mountains and you have a happy ending for the whole family to ponder. Now Through April 11th. For tickets call 602-253-8188. THE DUTTONS at The Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre in Mesa What’s the hottest live music show in the valley this month? If you said THE DUTTONS from Branson, Missouri, then you’re right. This top notch family of entertainers has set up shop at the Broadway Palm in Mesa this March to adoring audiences. It’s no secret, since they were selected finalists on America’s Got Talent TV show that these folks can play, dance and sing! They’re loaded with talent including award winning instrumentalist Timothy Dutton, award winning violinist Amy Dutton, and award winning dancer in Benjamin Dutton. But wait, there’s more! With brother Jonathan on banjo picking up a storm, sister Judith on sensational vocals, and the mom and dad who started it all, Sheila and Dean still playing with the band. This is as fun as it gets in Arizona, this side of the Missouri river. If your like your fiddle hot and the music rocky top high, then these Dutton’s will amaze you with their repertoire of songs such as the Orange Blossom Special, Teddy Bear (a crowd favorite), Bye Bye Love, Rock Around the Clock, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, a Follow the Yellow Brick Road medley with The Wizard of Oz (another crowd favorite full of real munchkins), Loves Me Like a Rock, Keep Praying Till the Answer Comes, La Bamba and many more. Catch them while they’re here, otherwise you’ll have to travel down to Branson to see then in their own Dutton Theatre. Tickets 480-840-6874 or BroadwayPalmWest.com. MARTHA GRAHAM DANCE COMPANY at Scottsdale Center for the Arts. The Martha Graham Dance Company was in town last weekend at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts for a profound presentation of some of the great works Martha Graham produced throughout her stunning career. This was a breathtaking and artistic expression of a visionary artist-dancer who combined many art forms to express her feelings and ideas. The current company dancers were spellbinding in presenting a repertoire of Martha’s greatest pieces including THE INCENSE, A PRIEST OF KNOSSOS, TANAGRA, SERENATA MORSISCA, LAMENTATIONS, and STEPS IN THE STREET. Most notable favorites and spiritual expressions were EL PENITENTE, a purification dance influenced by the American Southwest and the story of Christ’s Crucifixion with Mary as Virgin, Magdalene and Mother; and the colorful and angelic DIVERSIONS OF ANGELS. Kudos to Scottsdale Center for bringing Arizona audiences another amazing performance! BREAK A LEG!

Is There a Way to Add a Flavor to a Cigar? Why sure there is dear, with time and a little ingenuity. Let’s say you want to add a slight flavor of vanilla to your cigars. The best way to accomplish this is to take one cigar and peel off the wrapper leaves. Add a few drops of vanilla to the leaves to moisten them, then place the leaves in one corner of your humidor. The other cigars in the humidor will become infused with the flavor of the vanilla over time. You can use this process with cognac, peppermint oil, etc. but remember that whatever flavor you introduce to your humidor will become infused in all the cigars in the humidor! Get creative and indulge!

“Chloe”, a disturbing psychological drama …

Calvin encounters numerous other challenges that make him rethink what his life is going to be like in the future.

Movie review by Stan Robinson

“On the surface Calvin Marshall looks like a sports movie,” says Lundgren. “But, it turns out to not be your typical sports film. We think that’s a good thing. Audiences have found it to be so much more. Most sports movie focus on the underdog who overachieves. It stayed with me that there are so many people that have their identities wrapped up in playing baseball that have to walk away from the game.”

The plot ‘twists and turns’ abound in this drama of a doctor (Julianne Moore) who hires an escort (Amanda Seyfried) to test her college professor husband (Liam Neeson), who she suspects of having an affair. The results present a lot more than she thought, to include danger for her family and teenage son. Be sure to read my review at www. ScreenScene.org

“How to Train Your Dragon”, children will be asking for ‘pet dragons’… Movie review by Stan Robinson My first thought of “How to Train Your Dragon” might be a bit scary for the younger one’s. The fears were quickly dispelled when I heard the comments from the kids as we left the screening! The story, presented in 3-D, follow a young Viking boy who’s ridiculed and made fun of because he has no wish to become a ‘dragon hunter’. Pushed into the dragon hunter training school, along with befriending a young dragon, he learns there may be more to the feared creatures than he assumed, and a possible new direction for his tribe! “How to Train Your Dragon” is a first rate adventure, be sure to read my review at www.ScreenScene.org Featuring the voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller, and Kristen Wiig. Directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders. Written by Dean DeBlois. Paramount Pictures release. Rated PG for sequences of intense action and some scary images, and brief mild language. Runtime: 98 minutes.

Sony Pictures Classics release. Rated R for strong sexual content including graphic dialogue, nudity and language. Runtime: 96 minutes.

“Greenberg”, Ben Stiller goes serious… Movie review by Stan Robinson In this drama, A New Yorker (Ben Stiller) moves to Los Angeles in order to figure out his life after recovering from a nervous breakdown. He’s housesitting for his brother while he and his family are away on vacation. Rediscovering social interaction is a key aspect of the process, and we see how tough the road can be as Roger Greenberg’s journey begins… My full review is available at www. ScreenScene.org Starring Ben Stiller, Greta Gerwig, Rhys Ifans, Chris Messina, and Susan Traylor. Written and directed by Noah Baumbach. Focus Features release. Rated R for some strong sexuality, drug use, and language. Runtime: 107 minutes.

Calvin Marshall… A Different Sports Story By Randy Montgomery Calvin Marshall loves baseball. It’s too bad that he’s not that good at it. That is the premise of the new indie comedy of the same name opening exclusively in the Valley this weekend. The opening date and the Arizona location were both chosen strategically. Director Gary Lundgren explains, “We were really gung ho about releasing in August of last year when we had just finished the film. We wanted to hit festivals and then go right into theatres. When August passed, we zeroed in on what the next window would be; we thought ‘right after the Oscars, Spring Training starts.’” With the theme of baseball, and the Phoenix area being home to numerous Spring Training teams, this market seemed to be a logical place to start. Calvin (played by Alex Frost, Elephant and NCIS) is a happy go lucky student at Bayford City College. He loves the game and has tried numerous times to join the school’s team. Admiring his spirit more than his skills, the coach (Steve Zahn) decides to give Calvin a shot. His skills do not improve, thus making him come to the realization that becoming a famous star in the sport is not in his future, despite being a dream. Along the road to this discovery,

Having played baseball himself in college, Lundgren remembers many that inspired the story he wrote and directed. “There were a few players that were like Calvin. Most of us at some point had to stop playing. Many sports films tell that ‘one in the million story,’ but now there’s a movie about the rest of us.” “The hierarchy of college sports is something that always stayed with me. In high school sports are fun; in college it’s more of a job. You see the love of the game go by the wayside when you are judged by whether you are good enough and if you can perform.” Having a passion for baseball and an urge to work on a creative project led to Lundgren’s project. “I was an English major in college and played baseball. I was the guy on the bus reading book, and an athlete; played basketball and baseball. I enjoyed story telling and got a little involved in theatre in college. I was always a huge film fan. It came together in college, when I decided to write a screenplay.” Sure, the movie is about baseball, but as Lundgren puts it, “It’s about Calvin having the resilience and being able to get up and do something new.” Calvin Marshall opens exclusively in Phoenix on Friday, March 26 at Harkins Scottsdale 101 and Harkins Chandler Fashion Center 20. A portion of the ticket sale proceeds will benefit seven local charities. Play ball!

Women in Beer part 2 by Chuck Noll Last week we examined the women in the brewing industry. Those females who, throughout history, have been responsible for the drinking pleasure of every one of us. This week, we look at the women who drink beer and what happens on the consumer side of the pint glass. There is a stereotype of women beer drinkers that says they drink light, fruity beers. The phrase “girly beer” can be heard at many bars, usually uttered by unenlightened men who are frequently consuming pale lagers. In fact, many people don’t even think of women as beer drinkers, they are considered wine drinkers. Well this stereotype could not be more wrong. Women everywhere love great beer with bold flavors. In many cases, early exposure to the complexities of wine (by people who have pushed these women in the “traditional” direction) has allowed them to grasp the subtle nuances of high end beers such as sour ales,

Belgians and others. IPA’s, that hoppy, bitter ale is one of the least favorites of women. In a recent survey, fully one third of the women responding listed this style as their least favorite. This may be because women have better developed palates than do men. This allows them to pick up all the astringencies that men might miss. Only the best IPAs tend to pass muster with women, IPAs such as Bell’s Two Hearted, Bear Republic Racer 5, Breckenridge 471 IPA and Anderson Valley Hop Ottin all are popular with women drinkers in Arizona. Research has also found that just as many men drink the fruity beers as women. Pyramid’s Audacious Apricot is preferred equally by both sexes. The great majority of beer-loving women drink less, and less often, than their male counterparts. When they do drink, it’s often in the context of dining, and many of them select their beers as they would wines, to complement the meal and the occasion. Dark or light; ale, lager, wheat, or mead; hoppy, tart, or malty; robust or mellow - more often than men, women will seek out that Continued on Page 28...

by Jeff Miller 1. The Mill. The malted barley is cracked in the roller mill to expose the inner starch. By carefully cracking, but not grinding the grain, the hull is left intact and acts as an efficient natural filter. 2. Grist Hopper. The hopper holds the full grain bill and slowly transfers the grain into the mash tun. 3. The Mash Tun. Water and grain are mixed at a controlled temperature for a certain amount of time. This mashing process converts the starches into sugars. Hot water is “sparged” on top of the mash to extract the sweet liquid called “wort.” 4. The Brew Kettle. The wort accumulates in the brew kettle as it is pumped from the mash tun. Hops are added during the boil to impart bitterness, flavor, and aroma. 5. The Heat Exchanger. The hot wort is passed through a heat exchanger to drop the temperature down to fermentation temperature. 6. The Fermenters. These large vessels are where the yeast mixes with the wort to create beer. Yeast consumes the sugar and makes alcohol and CO2. 7. Bright Beer Tank. In the Bright Beer tank, filtered beer is left to mature and checked for proper CO2 levels. 8. The Keg or Bottle. Then the beer is kegged or bottled and then shipped out to bars, grocery stores, restaurants, and other places that should have beer. 9. Your glass. The final and most important of the vessels in the brewing process. In your glass is the culmination of ten years of homebrewing, thirteen years of commercial brewing, and two weeks of fermentation. Enjoy it!

Women consumers throughout the country are looking for opportunities to learn more about beer. Groups dedicated to the female beer drinker are springing up everywhere. Another step for women consumers has been in to the writing side of the business. Reviewing beers and general blogging has gained its fair share of the fairer sex. Erika Reitz, editor in chief for DRAFT Magazine has been on a continuing quest to educate her readers about the beer lifestyle. Carolyn Smagalski, who writes under the name, The Beer Fox is another. Julie Johnson-Bradford is an accomplished writer as well as the editor of Beer Business Daily. And there are countless women just like these three that are an active part of beer journalism. Where do women drink in Arizona? Without question, they prefer places that offer variety and comfort. Décor is not as important as ambiance, so places like Mellow Mushroom, Papago Brewing, Yucca Tap Room and Delux appeal to women beer drinkers. They can sit at the bar or a table, come by themselves or in groups, drink on a date or with friends. Remarkably, they seem much like male beer drinkers in many aspects.

bar, or at a brewery where they learn more about the beverage they love. They may also just meet up after work informally for a beer or two. These informal events may be done by use of social networking sites like Twitter and a simple tweet of “How about a beer at 5:00?” may result in dozens of members showing up at a local watering hole. None of the groups exist in Arizona yet, but look for one or two to spring up shortly.

So to sum up the past two weeks… the brewing industry owes much of its very early growth, perhaps even its birth to women. Women throughout the years have been the backbone of the brewing industry. Women were early brewers in Colonial America (its generally accepted that Martha Washington did the brewing, not George), and the current age of craft beer has its share of talented and key females involved. Finally, women are drinking great beer at much the same pace that men are and are a faster growing group of drinkers. I think that pretty much covers it al. So the next time you see women out drinking, they could just as easily be drinking a stout or a nice Belgian Tripel as a “girly drink”, so before you jump to any conclusions, think about the women in history that have contributed to the beer in your glass. Throw away your pre-conceived notions about women beer drinkers and welcome them as compatriots, every bit as interested in great beer as the men are.

WRESTLEMANIA XXVI Sunday, March 28 2010 University of Phoenix Stadium WRESTLEMANIA XXVI – MATCH BY MATCH BREAKDOWN John Cena vs. Batista (Champion) – WWE Championship - Batista claimed the WWE Championship in February by taking advantage of a weakened John Cena, who had just won the WWE Championship in a grueling Elimination Chamber match. - John Cena has been the victim of multiple attacks by Batista in recent weeks. - While the two Superstars formerly shared mutual respect, Batista now harbors resentment toward John Cena for being the “golden boy” of the WWE Universe, while Batista feels he has been overlooked. Chris Jericho (Champion) vs. Edge – World Heavyweight Championship - Edge surprised everyone by winning the Royal Rumble, outlasting 29 other Superstars in an over-the-toprope battle for this Championship opportunity. - Chris Jericho and Edge are former tag team partners and earned championship gold together, but Edge was forced to vacate his half of the championships when he suffered a torn Achilles tendon last year. - Chris Jericho has taken all of the credit for the pair’s tag team success; a point that Edge aims to prove wrong. Mr. McMahon vs. Bret “Hit Man” Hart

34

- Bad blood between Mr. McMahon and Bret Hart has been brewing for March 25th, 2010 - March 31st, 2010

over 12 years with no resolution. On November 9, 1997, Mr. McMahon orchestrated the ultimate betrayal against Bret Hart in what would come to be known as the “Montreal Screwjob,” cheating him out of his WWE Championship. - Bret Hart finally made his longawaited return to the WWE on January 4, 2010, guest hosting Monday Night Raw and attempting to make amends with Mr. McMahon. Again, Bret Hart was betrayed when Mr. McMahon kicked him in the gut. - This WrestleMania showdown will be the culmination of one of the most heated feuds in the history of World Wrestling Entertainment. Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels Streak vs Career – No Count-outs or Disqualifications - The Undertaker has a perfect streak of 17 wins-0 losses at WrestleMania. - Shawn Michaels is known as “Mr. WrestleMania” and is putting his career on the line in this match. - Their match at WrestleMania XXV was considered by some to be the best WrestleMania match of all time. Money in the Bank Ladder Match - 9 WWE Superstars will compete for the chance to become “Mr. Money in the Bank,” including Christian, Kane, Shelton Benjamin, Matt Hardy, MVP, Jack Swagger, Dolph Ziggler, Evan Bourne and Drew McIntyre. - The winner of this match will earn the right to claim a Championship opportunity at any time over the next year. - This is one of the most exciting and unpredictable matches ever conceived in World Wrestling Entertainment. Big Show and The Miz (Champions) vs. John Morrison and R-Truth – Unified Tag Team Championship - Big Show and The Miz defeated D-Generation X to capture the Unified Tag Team Championships. Big Show is the “World’s Largest Athlete” and AZWeeklyMagazine.com

The Miz is the current United States Champion and a former reality TV star. - John Morrison and R-Truth won a triple-threat tag team match to earn the right to face the Unified Tag Team Champions at WrestleMania XXVI. This duo brings a tremendous amount of athleticism and high-flying acrobatics to the table. - The Miz and John Morrison have a history together: They have held tag team championships together in the past. This time, they will be on opposing teams. Triple H vs. Sheamus - Triple H eliminated Sheamus from the Elimination Chamber match, ending his reign as WWE Champion. - Triple H – also known as “The Game” and “The King of Kings” - is one of the most experienced and popular WWE Superstars of all time. - Sheamus was the first-ever Irishborn WWE Champion and is known as “the Celtic Warrior.” Randy Orton vs. Ted DiBiase vs. Cody Rhodes – Triple Threat Match - Randy Orton formerly mentored Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes. The trio was known as “The Legacy”. - All three of these competitors are second or third generation WWE Superstars. - Randy Orton is a 6-time World Champion, while Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes held World Tag Team Championships together on two occasions.

Wrestler Profile Cody Rhodes WrestleMania XXVI “Money in the Bank Ladder Match” As the son of WWE Hall of Famer the “American Dream” Dusty Rhodes, Cody Rhodes grew up admiring his father and watching him capture the imagination of wrestling fans worldwide. Now Cody is ready to

carry on his father’s legacy while carving out one of his own in WWE. Now, with his father watching on, Cody Rhodes is thrilled to have an opportunity in WWE and show the WWE Universe that the legacy of the Dream lives on. The secondgeneration Superstar has already won championship gold twice, the first time obtaining the World Tag Team Championship with partner Hardcore Holly, and the second time turning on Holly with new partner and fellow wrestling scion, Ted DiBiase, to win the title again at Night of Champions. The duo would also look to another Superstar, Randy Orton, for guidance. With Orton as their mentor, DiBiase and Rhodes both became a better tag team and fierce singles competitors. However, their allegiance with Orton crumbled and they would end up opposing their former leader. Along with DiBiase, Cody Rhodes represents a new generation of Superstars that have the genetics, pride and confidence to go the distance. Rhodes has made his intentions clear: to make his own name in WWE, and he doesn’t want anyone holding him back.

The Best New Way to Meet Singles!

Hello all! Just an FYI, March 28 is the LAST day to catch the Renaissance Festival. I can’t think of a better way to spend the day than by talking in a 16th century accent while chewing on a turkey leg and wearing that Harry Potter cape u bought when the movie first came out. Who’s laughing NOW people renting their costumes! www.royalfaires.com/arizona Half Moon Sports Grill When someone says “sports bar” my immediate reaction is –no-. I can’t help it! Years of perverted old men in jerseys and over fried mozzarella sticks have programmed me to be this way. When I first heard of Half Moon, it sounded too innocent to be what I described above. Therefore upon hearing the raves, I decided to make a journey. I walked into a stylistic interior with booths, high tops and plenty of flat screens showcasing not only sports but music videos that for some reason I couldn’t turn away from. The patio is even cozier with a flaming fire pit and low strung lights - how ambient- but wait, it’s a sports bar! Ok let me bring up something that makes a bar awesome; serving food till midnight and having happy hour 11am to 7pm Mon-Fri… and then once again in reverse from 10pm till 12am. Great idea - just like the giant soft pretzel on the menu. Now that’s random and exciting. Half Moon always has something going on, like this Saturday the Ultimate Fighting Championship - St. Pierre vs. Hardy will be featured at 7pm and I can think of no better place to watch the waitresses - I mean the championship. www.HalfMoonSportsGrill.com 602.977.2700 Tom Green at the Tempe Improv March 25th -27th. Where the hell did Tom Green go after making Freddy Got Fingered and Road Trip? Well, to start off, he’s built a video

studio in his house from which he has been filming his web show Tom Green’s House Tonight for the past 3 years. Tired of the LA lockdown (if you can call it that) Tom has decided to go on a road trip of his own and venture out onto his first World Stand Up Comedy Tour. And guess who happens to be on the way to Australia? Obviously the Tempe Improv. And just to let you know, this isn’t a hole in the wall comedy joint where the drinks are limited to cheap vodka and the host happens to be the opening comedian who happens to be better at hosting. No my friends, Tempe Improv is a comedy experience. A theater that holds 500 with a balcony and a fully stocked bar guarantees a good time. Make sure to try the changing drink concoctions the bartenders invent. And Oh My! Could it be that a comedy club has a tasty full menu too? Not limiting itself to french fries, your choices range from grilled salmon to baby back ribs. You may find yourself saying “Damn you Improvstop tempting me with your giant pizza cookie!” Walking through the double doors plunges you into pitch black, so yes I am saying you will trip on something - then again that just may be me. There’s no better way to break your Improv virginity than to go see the older, wiser, and funnier Tom Green who will be headlining Thursday to Saturday. Oh and on a side note, make sure to high-five the manager Adam and tell him you’re a giant Nickelback fan too. www.TempeImprov.com 480.921.9877

The free event features both indoor and outdoor performances by some of the best musical talent in Arizona, and complimented by main stage performances headlined by some of the finest worldwide touring musicians in the current jazz scene. The two-day festival will involved 12 venues, 33 bands, more than 145 jazz musicians, including Nick Manson and the Festival Allstars on Friday night and the New Orleans band Bleu Orleans headlining the Saturday lineup. The Chandler Jazz Festival main stage performances run from 4:45-9:15 p.m. on Friday, March 26, and from noon-9:15 p.m. on Saturday, March 27. However, some performances inside downtown businesses or on downtown sidewalks will start as early as 11 a.m. on Saturday, and continue as late as 2 a.m. on both nights. The complete festival entertainment lineup is available online at www.chandleraz.gov/jazz. The main stage in Dr. A.J. Chandler Park is located just south of Chandler Blvd. on the west side of Arizona Ave. Attendees may want to bring a blanket or lawn chair to enjoy the outdoor performances.
