Nick@ Night By Nick Connell THE GLASS MANAGERIE Arizona Theatre Company at the Herberger Theatre Center in Phoenix There are productions of classics in the American theatre that sometimes miss the mark-wavering in self indulgence and myopic interpretations that have been done time and time again. Thank God Arizona Theatre Company’s production of A GLASS MENAGERIE is not one of them. From the moment the lights faded up and we were greeted by a stage of life-it was clear Director Juliette Carillo was going to make her mark on this profoundly personal Tennessee Williams classic. Juliette’s direction and staging were an enormous contribution to a story most Americans will experience but rarely view. Along with Juliette’s excellent direction were some great performances any director would pray be the clay they can fashion into an acting masterpiece. Starting with Noel Joseph Allain as Tom, Catalina Maynard as Amanda, and Barbra Wengerd as Laura, this Wingfield family portrait was heart wrenching and stunning to watch. This feeble pen cannot touch the depth of emotions running through the spirit of this family. Bring in a gentlemen caller full of energy and excitement in the name of Jim O’Connor, played by the charming Brain Ibsen, and you have a drama extraordinaire. This is one of those shows worth sneaking in the back stage door just to view the eyes of America travel down the road of Tennessee Williams hopes and dreams. Movie review by Stan Robinson Greg Kinnear has come a long way as an actor since his days of the first host of “Talk Soup” in 1991 and hosted until 1995, when he left the show for the NBC late-night talk show, “Later with Greg Kinnear” (1994). His recent dramatic role in “Green Zone” is pivotal to set the tone of what Matt Damon’s character is up against, the power of the ‘higher ups’ in the Pentagon. My experience on many

Steve Miller (Greg Kinnear) is a former concert pianist and teacher, and is living the quiet life in Tybee Island, a Southern beach town, having moved from New York City. He’s been divorced for 3 years and is estranged from his two children, 17-year-old Veronica, nicknamed ‘Ronnie’ (Miley Cyrus) and a son Jonah (Bobby Coleman) around 10 years old. On a strong suggestion from his ex-wife, she arrives to deliver the children for a summer stay to reconnect with their father. Ronnie is rebellious and has been for the last 3 years, while Jonah and his dad instantly re-bond. The only connection he and Ronnie ever had also seems lost, their love and natural talent of writing and playing classical music on the piano. The summer of reconnection of a father and his two children is a powerful story, and when a shattering revealation is disclosed a little over half way through, there couldn’t have been a dry eye in the theater, including this reviewer. With some new coaches on staff and plenty of new players on board, D-backs Manager A.J. Hinch is ready to lead his squad back to contention in the N. L. West.
By Greg Salvatore There is an energy to the 2010 D-backs that is palpable the moment you set foot in the clubhouse or on the field for batting practice. It isn’t that the team got younger. It didn’t. The D-backs are, collectively, an older club than the 2009 version. And the exuberance isn’t just with the youngest players like Justin Upton of Gerardo Parra, it’s evident with everyone, from Dan Haren to Adam LaRoche, from Bob Howry to Mark Reynolds. On March 9 in a Spring Training game against the Cincinnati Reds, Conor Jackson went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs and a double, and while that may seem like nothing special inasmuch as it happened in an exhibition, it was exactly what the D-backs needed to see. The team’s lineup suffered innumerable problems in 2009 stemming largely from the fact that the most dependable on-base machine was shut down in early May, and had been rendered ineffective even before that with Valley fever. “I’m just happy to have energy,” Jackson said, “that was my main goal coming in to this year.” Jackson is back and that’s music to the ears of his fellow D-backs who look to rebound in 2010 behind a bolstered lineup, a reinforced pitching staff and a revamped group of coaches. “I think the last thing we’re thinking about here is what we did last year,” Jackson said. “That’s the great thing about Spring Training. We started on a clean slate.”

Jackson got off to a hot start in Spring Training and kept it going, shooting line drives to the outfield the way he has when he’s helped carry the D-backs offense in the past. In addition to Jackson, another significant focus this Spring was on Brandon Webb, who was perhaps the best pitcher in the National League from 2006-2008. A shoulder injury sustained on Opening Day in 2009 knocked him out for the year, but Webb spent the offseason focusing on a full return to health, and a full return to the D-backs rotation. Though that may be delayed a bit at the outset while he builds his arm strength, Webb is expected to contribute to the D-backs for most of this season.

Gibson and Glenn Sherlock are the veterans. Jack Howell and Mel Stottlemyre Jr. are experienced, having joined the club during the 2009 season, but they got to work with the team from the outset in 2010, a significant luxury in a game predicated on repetition and mechanics. First Base Coach Matt Williams and Third Base Coach Bo Porter are the new guys, and both were integral immediately in Spring Training, with Williams running infield drills in workouts and after batting practice on game days, and Porter running outfield drills throughout camp.

“When Brandon Webb is healthy, what he does for a team’s morale and a team’s belief in whether or not we can win can’t really be measured,” Manager A.J. Hinch said. “Him alone, getting back to health, and putting him in a rotation that includes Dan Haren and Edwin Jackson and competition for the other guys, it just makes your team feel better. It makes your team feel like you have a chance to win every time he’s on the mound.” Hinch led a newly assembled D-backs coaching staff through a successful Spring Training this season. Kirk
Of course, the coaches aren’t the only additions to the uniformed personnel. LaRoche, Howry, Jackson, Ian Kennedy, Aaron Heilman and Kelly Johnson all donned Sedona Red with the intention of winning championships. LaRoche and Johnson played alongside each other in the second half of last season with the Atlanta Braves, and came up through the Braves’ minor league system together. “They bring a lot to our team in their presence,” Hinch said. “It helps for them with this team that they played together, it’s probably an easier transition for them. They’ve made themselves right at home. They don’t look the least bit uncomfortable as far as joining a new team.” The pair should lend support to a D-backs offense that was mostly carried last year by players still establishing themselves. Reynolds and Miguel Montero made huge strides last year, but nobody made a bigger leap than Upton. D-backs fans and baseball as a whole quickly ignored the fact that he was only 21 when his name was called at the All-Star Game in St. Louis. This year, Upton should continue to rocket toward baseball superstardom, but will be well supported in the process. “I don’t want to put so much pressure on (Upton) that he thinks he needs to carry our team,” Hinch said. “One thing that we’ve established this offseason is that the additions of LaRoche and Johnson and Jackson to our lineup — and obviously Reynolds and Montero are a year older, a healthy Snyder and Drew coming back — we’ve got a lot of guys who can carry us at different parts of the year and he doesn’t have to be the only guy producing in the lineup.” The organization worked out a long-term contract with Upton prior to the season that will keep him in a D-backs uniform

through 2015. It was something of a theme for the team this winter, working out multi-year deals with young players. Reynolds signed a three year deal with a club option for a fourth midway through Spring Training, and Edwin Jackson signed a two-year deal in February. Jackson, who has now been traded three times, said he’s looking forward to staying in the same clubhouse for a couple of years. “It’s always good to have some stability,” he said. “Through the years I have spent time in clubhouses year-to-year, but now to be locked in, I can really get adjusted and get acquainted with my teammates. By two years, you know everybody, they know you, and you know each other’s habits, likes and dislikes. It’s always nice to know that you have some stability and you’ll be settled in for a couple years.”

The Dodgers are on the schedule again when the D-backs close out the home schedule on Sept. 24-26. Fandemonium weekend might be complete with important games to decide the NL West, especially when you include three games against Colorado (Sept. 21-23) that precede the Dodgers series. The D-backs have a new coaching staff, several new key contributors on the field, and an edge that suggests something special is happening in the desert in 2010.
There will be a lot of spectacular things to see at Chase Field in 2010. The defending National League champion Philadelphia Phillies come to town for a weekend series in April (23-25), giving the D-backs an early shot at showing baseball the new, improved squad in 2010. The New York Yankees, reigning World Series champs, will be making only their second regular season trip to Chase Field in June. In games that will likely fill the house, D-backs fans can buy a number of different ticket packages that can put them in the seats and help hold a home field advantage against a formidable opponent. The Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League have reached broadcast agreements with the NFL Network and KAZT-TV (AZ-TV) to broadcast a total of nine of the team’s games. The NFL Network will broadcast one home game to a national audience while AZ-TV will carry another eight games broadcasting to Phoenix and Northern Arizona. With nine games on the broadcast schedule, the Arizona Rattlers are excited to have more television exposure than any other year in the team’s history. In addition to broadcasting the games, AZ-TV will produce a weekly Rattlers segment on The McMahon
Group, featuring Team President Danny White, Head Coach Kevin Guy, or players. “These television broadcast agreements will allow us to share the inside workings of the team and even more of the game action with our fans,” said White. “This will be one of the premier teams in the Arena Football League. “Our fans are Rattler Proud and Rattler Loud, and we’re going to give them a lot to cheer for when we take the field next spring,” said White. “There’s a great tradition of Arena Football here in Phoenix, and I look forward to helping bring that tradition back to our fans. April is here and the calendar is filling up with all kinds of really nice charity events. Events that feature great food and great wine…and increasingly great beer as well. Over the past few years more and more of these charity functions that previously offered beer only to those who insisted on it, and reserved their higher-end beverages for wine and spirits, are including beer right out with the rest of the grown up drinks. Last weekend was one of the first of these events, Bon Vivant was held at Rawhide in Chandler. This “Celebration of Fine Food and Drink” is sponsored annually by Basha’s Supermarkets (among others) and featured some of the best wines, spirits, and, yes, beers. This year, in addition to high-end craft beers from Big Sky and Bell’s, as well as Wyder’s

Fine Belgian beers like Gulden Draak and Piraat were featured for those who donated extra to the Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs, and deserved something special. The beer, as expected, was a big hit. But what’s coming in April? Plenty of things, from large events to small, there are several things going on every week; and the best ones include beer. Let’s highlight a few of these events. April 8th is the Forks and Corks event put on by the Arizona Restaurant Association and the Arizona Hotel and Lodging Association. This event, held right after work at The Esplanade on Camelback features top restaurants in the Valley such as Blanco, The Melting Pot, Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs and a couple of dozen others cranking out some of their best food, all of which is paired with wine and beer. Ah yes April Fools day, the one time of year when you can finally try putting your co worker’s stapler into a Jell-O mold and not be attacked for it. I thank The Office for such great ideas. Sadly most people let this day pass them by yet, if you are the type of person who has perfected an evil plan by the 1st of April than please entertain me with your originality. Eddie V’s Edgewater Grill When I think of the perfect “it’s my birthday take me to dinner damn it” restaurant, I develop a check sheet of 4 factors in my head that need to be satisfied; dim ambient atmosphere, stylish but cozy setting, live music, and oysters. You may not agree with the last factor, but that’s not the point. Eddie V’s was a place I’ve always heard of but never attended. So when my surprise birthday dinner turned out to be there I was excited. Best part of all is that all 4 of my “factors” were taken care of. First and foremost let me just say that the jazz/blues group Soul Impressions was phenomenal. Set up right in the corner of the lounge it started off with a woman singing soft lyrical melodies, towards the night her friend came on with a deep sultry voice that just sent chills through me and my oysters - which were fantastic by the way as were the other delicacies. Best part is they sang songs that got half the lounge up and dancing. It made me think of a stylish city bar that just happened to spring up far off from the city itself in the star-filled desert sky. Wow that last sentence almost made me want to write for Hallmark. Anyway people, point of the story is that Eddie V’s is a great place to spend a weekend night or begin one. Soul Impressions plays every weekend from 7pm to 11pm in the lounge. (480) 538-8468

No no, it’s because the outside courtyard will be home to the April Fools Day concert featuring one of my favorite local bands Eleven Fifty Seven whose punk rock sound has made it from the airwaves of So Cal to AZ. Hosting the event is 80/20 Records, a local record label who happens to give 80% royalties back to the artists! So heads up to those looking for representation. As the host, 80/20 Records has picked a varying selection of rock bands that will mesh together perfectly producing one hell of a show. Doors open at 7pm with the stand up comedy of Brian Rhodes. At 8pm the concert starts with the Indie pop band Race You There followed by Some Never Sleep who are more on the experimental rock side. Eleven Fifty Seven blasts some punk rock through the speakers leading the way to The Dorsets who keep it more rock heavy. What Laura Says headlines the show showcasing their Indie rock music nationwide and now making it to Tempe! Patience is the name of the game when it comes to restoring cigars that have been dried out due to a lack of humidification. Time and a slow re-hydrating process are the two essential elements required to restore the cigars to their original state. Start by placing the cigars in a sealed box for a few days to allow them to breathe and adjust to their environment. After a few days, introduce your humidifier to the environment with a partially filled humidifier. Let the cigars rest and readjust to the new environment. Repeat this process during the course of the next few weeks until the cigars are supple to the touch. And remember to be patient… you can’t rush greatness darling.

Why did this band get started? Pauly Polyester: After having the most successful marching band in Northwest Nebraska, it became obvious to us that everything we touched turned into instant gold. We then relocated to Arizona and quickly became the best looking and most talented group at the Silver Springs trailer park in Apache Junction. After having achieved that lofty goal we set our sights even higher. We now are determined to be the best show in Arizona and then the world. We can do the Disco Dance, Hair Rock Revival and Grind the Grunge like no other and we do all three in one night! What’s the story behind the name? Ahh, a good question for me (Gary Groovy). Ever since my recurring guest spots on the hit 70’s TV show Good Times (my character was Jerome), I have wanted to create a show that would highlight my favorite musical era’s, the 70’s 80’s and 90’s even though the 80’s and 90’s

Who gets the most Groupies and why? If nobody gets any, do you have a plan to change this? Let Gary Groovy answer this one. Unfortunately our bass player has such a pungent odor that women cannot get close to the stage. We may change his name to Right Guard! I definitely would say that our singer (Freddy/Vince/Layne) has the best opportunity since he was doing 70’s asian porn while we were practicing. I think his nickname was Too Long Dong. Tell us a secret about the band (just between us and 125,000 readers): Deuce Damage: There are so many secrets to tell, most people didn’t know that Hair Raid Guitarist Deuce Damage is a former German Supermodel, having appeared nude in “Der Deutschmann” Magazine. That is a secret he has tried to conceal, but the truth is out now. Deuce has recently been taking guitar lessons and also completed his English as a second language class. He now has a strong command of the English language and we can understand him about 50% of the time now! As Deuce likes to say “I’z dont care if I’z cont play der guitarz fer shit, az long az I look good fer all der hot babes at der Hair Raid show, Yahhh!” Also Disco Dynamite Drummer, Gary Groovy is a former child star allegedly appearing in episode #23 of “Good Times” and episode #31 of the Brady Bunch. He has fond memories of “Good Times” but keeps mum about the behind the scenes activities of
the “Brady Bunch”. It is alleged that he was propositioned, but we are uncertain if it was Mr. Brady, Mrs. Brady or Sam the Butcher that did the propositioning. Dikki Dazzle Bassist of Disco Dynamite didn’t get that name from his mother, if you are following me. An underwater volcanic eruption spews boiling water into the cruise ship you’re playing on, and wouldn’t you know it, right in the middle of your set! Do you know why they call me Banger? I am a terrible driver... The 3D Rock Show performs every Thursday night at The Library Bar on Mill Ave in Downtown Tempe! Act 1 is Disco Dynamite followed by Hair Raid and then The Grunge Puppies. Show starts around 9:00pm. Sometimes later if Chase Junk is trying to score some smack. We also travel the U.S. to perform at festivals and casinos in Nevada, Washington, California, Utah and Guam. What’s the funniest thing that ever happened while performing? Deuce Damage: While jamming some 80’s Cock Rock, Hair Raid bassist Kiki Shellshok, tripped over the edge of the drum riser and fell on his ass in front of hundreds, perhaps thousands of rabid, screaming fans. The best part, he is a huge hit on YouTube– just Search “Bass Player Falls and keeps on playing.”
What do you do different that kicks ass over other cover bands? Deuce Damage: There are no other bands talented enough to do what we do. No Way! We have Disco Dynamite, Hair Raid and the Grunge Puppies all in one night! We have Mr. Gary Groovy on drums! The man licks his drum sticks and makes the ladies squeal! No other band in town can say that! What advice would you give a startup cover band? Banger Valentino: Start an original band. It is VERY likely that you will
make the big time in no time just by writing the music that you think is good. Cover bands like us never amount to anything except regular, high paying shows in front of lots of people. If that makes you happy then maybe you should do it? But that would be stupid. Why profit from other peoples hard work? Ha Ha. Why would anyone do that? What’s the biggest misconception people have about musicians? Deuce Damage: Many people believe musicians are uneducated, unemployed and unmotivated. This is simply not true. The guys in the 3D Rockshow are all highly educated. Buzz Liteyear recently completed his Doctorate in Nuclear Physics and soon will have perfected the cure for Genital Warts. Gary Groovy, when not filming adult movies has a very rewarding career as a call center manager for American Express and we are very happy to announce that Kiki Shellshok has decided to wash his clothes this week!
