Christina Ricci Enters the After.Life By Randy Montgomery First time feature film writer/director Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo’s After. Life will send chills up your spine as well as make you think; something most horror suspense films usually do not ask the viewer to do. The film begs the question, “what is life like after we die, and how do we accept death once we are gone?” Christina Ricci (Adams Family, Black Snake Moan) plays Anna Taylor, a young woman who ends up on a mortician’s table after being involved in a fatal car accident. The accident comes on the heels of a fight with her significant other Paul (Justin Long). After being knocked out in the accident, Anna wakes up in the funeral home being tended to by Eliot Deacon (Liam Neeson), a fairly odd and mysterious man. It seems as if Anna is caught between life and the after life. But is she really dead? Anna believes she is still alive, being held captive by a mad man, but Eliot insists that she is dead and must comes to terms with what lies beyond for her. What truly happens to the body and soul once we pass from this earth is something no one knows for sure, and Anna must figure this out for herself. Ricci doesn’t really have an answer either, “I don’t know what happens (when you die). I am confused about how I feel about death and whether if the soul remains with the body. In

the movie, Anna must try to manage what it feels like to accept her own death and accept someone telling you that you are already dead.” What isn’t up for debate is the pressure and intense situations Ricci was put through while making the film. One scene in particular takes place in a coffin, and Ricci was really in it as they were throwing dirt on top of it. She took it with stride though, “I was on my iPhone, six feet under in my own purple coffin. I was texting my friends.” “If a situation is intense, then I will laugh as much as possible. If it’s sad, I tend to laugh. There were a lot of things that were really creepy in this movie, like being in our own coffin,” says Ricci. “When it comes to doing your job, you have to be serious true. To do these kinds of roles, you have to commit yourself, and have an imagination. You have to immerse yourself in the situation.” Ricci enjoys her job though, “I like doing drama. With drama, you have to really, really connect and have a passion for what you are doing. When you do, it is very fulfilling. When you have worked on as many movies as I have, you can make anything fun. I just like being an actress.” .After.Life is a stylized suspense thriller that will certainly provoke lively discussion afterwards. Anchor Bay Entertainment’s After.Life opens in select theatres on Friday, April 9.

St. Francis, the new restaurant in uptown Phoenix in the restored historic building on Camelback Road, is now open for lunch, with options for a leisurely lunch with friends or a short business lunch meeting. For those on a tight work schedule, Chef/Owner Aaron Chamberlin has designed a special Business Lunch menu that includes a “chef’s choice” 3 course menu with a delicious ending - warm freshly-baked cookies to bring back to the office - all for the price of $18. It also includes a guarantee for guests, who can have lunch and be ready to return to work in just 30 minutes! The “to go” cookies will change daily and include chocolate peanut butter cookies, ginger snaps with a cream cheese filling, sugar dusted short bread cookies and more.

Or, for those who have more time, St. Francis will also feature light and seasonal dishes with prices so affordable they invite a guilt-free midday break. The lunch menu offerings include seasonal soups such as celery root and apple puree. Salads such as Romaine hearts with endive, heirloom apples, bacon and creamy cheddar dressing or Chicken salad with preserved lemon, pine nuts, zatar sauce and flat bread, and Ahi tuna salad with red quinoa, avocado, soy beans and sweet & spicy vinaigrette. For a heartier appetite, lunch options include a “French onion burger” with smoked bacon and gruyère cheese or an Open-faced roasted pork loin sandwich, sweet potato, braising greens and sage brown butter. Two mouth-watering dessert selections include Caramelized spiced rice pudding and a Chocolate hazelnut parfait. Lunch will be served TuesdayFriday from 11am to 2pm. A HISTORICAL SALUTE TO MARCH MADNESS

TIGER’S TIME FINALLY ARRIVES AT AUGUSTA Stage Set for Biggest Comeback in Golfing History Tiger Woods will soon drive past the 61 trees that form a canopy down Magnolia Lane, pull up in front of the white clubhouse at Augusta National and walk up the stairs on the side of the building to a locker room reserved for Masters champions. It’s a routine he has followed since he won his first green jacket. Nothing else about this Masters figures to be remotely routine, not even that familiar introduction on the first tee. “Fore, please. Tiger Woods.” Five months after a sex scandal that still lingers on the Internet and in the tabloids, Woods is coming back to golf - at a major that already attracts the largest television audience. From his first press conference on Monday to his opening tee shot on Thursday, through Amen Corner and along the azaleas and dogwoods and Georgia pines, this should be a Masters like no other. “I think it’s going to be one of the biggest events in golf history, because the biggest player in golf history

is going to come back from this absence, and everybody is going to be scrutinizing his game and what he says and where he goes and where he has dinner ... everything,” British Open champion Stewart Cink said. “He’s made a career out of exceeding expectations,” Geoff Ogilvy said. “He’s spent his whole life under a microscope, but this is going to be on a level he’s never seen before.” Woods went 15 weeks without touching a club while in seclusion from the paparazzi and in therapy for the deviant double life he was leading. He began practicing on Feb. 28 and spent two days at Augusta National in the weeks leading up to the Masters. Even so, he has no idea what to expect when he returns - from his game or from the gallery. “I’m a little nervous about that to be honest with you,” he told ESPN in a pair of fiveminute interviews he gave television. “It would be nice to hear a couple claps here and there.”

The first time North Carolina coach Dean Smith appeared in the NCAA Final Four, he was a member of the 1952 Kansas team that won the national title. Here, Smith (white jersey) chases a loose ball in the semifinal with Santa Clara. Kansas went on to win 74-55.

San Francisco’s Bill Russell gets a ride off the court after defeating La Salle, 77-63, to win the title in Kansas City. Russell was named most outstanding player after scoring 47 points.

Michigan State guard Earvin “Magic” Johnson dunks over Indiana State’s Bob Heaton during the national title game in Salt Lake City. Johnson was named Most Outstanding Player after Michigan State defeated Indiana State 75-64.

Larry Bird lofts a shot over Jay Vincent during the 1979 NCAA finals against Michigan State.

ULTIMATE FIGHTER 11 BACK TO NORMAL RATINGS Team Liddell vs. Team Ortiz Opens to 1.9 million viewers “The Ultimate Fighter: Team Liddell vs. Team Ortiz,” the series’ eleventh season, opened to 1.9 million viewers on Wednesday night, according to Spike TV officials. That number is well below the 4.1 million that tuned in for the premier of last season’s “The Ultimate Fighter: The Heavyweights.” Of course, Season 10 had one big factor that this season does not... Kimbo Slice.

The Kimbo Slice factor definitely propelled Season 10 to all sorts of series records. Not only was the premier the most watched in series history, Kimbo’s fight with eventual Season 10 winner Roy Nelson drew a stunning 6.1 million viewers. Simply put, “The Heavyweights” was an anomaly. “Team Liddell vs. Team Ortiz” drawing 1.9 million viewers was much more in line with series history. The first nine seasons of “The Ultimate Fighter” averaged 2 million viewers per episode.

Last Sunday when the Yankees and the Red Sox took the field to start the baseball season, it was the 140th Opening Day in the history of Major League Baseball. Many things have changed throughout the history of the game, but one constant has been enjoying the feel of a cold beer (okay, maybe a lukewarm beer) in your hand as you watch the gentle rhythm of the

game. The sight of a beer sloshing over the top as a fan reaches for a foul ball, unsure of whether to give up on the beer or the ball is familiar as well. And, of course, that first beer at the ball park with a father or mother watching a team you grew up with, is a special memory for all. For me, it was the 1980 World Series, Game 2, Phillies vs Royals, watching the Continued on Page 29...

team I grew up with, enjoying a beer with my father as we sat in the upper deck. But I digress; the real issue is the availability of quality beer at the ballparks. Throughout the country, the folks that run the stadium concessions are starting to realize that good beer is an important part of people’s lives and we are starting to see it offered at the ballparks, albeit in limited quantities. Regardless, it’s a good feeling to be able to enjoy a craft beer while sitting in the stands. Chase Field, home of the Diamondbacks offers a small assortment of craft beers, including Fat Tire and Leinenkugels. Other stadiums offer a variety of craft beers as well. What is the best ball park for beer? Arguably, Coors Field in Denver, which features the award winning Sandlot Brewery right on the premises, may have the best opportunity to drink great beer. Sandlot, enjoyed by beer enthusiasts

for their variety of great beers, is more commonly known as the brewery that created Blue Moon. This popular beer based on the Belgian Wit style was developed by the talented brewers at Sandlot. By the way, if you are watching a Rockies game in Denver, the best place for a pregame or postgame meal and good beer is the Breckenridge Ballpark Brew Pub right across the street. If you’re just looking for a beer, a little further away on 22nd street is Great Divide Brewery and Tasting Room. Locally, good beer is starting to make an appearance in the downtown stadium area of Phoenix. Hard Rock Café will be offering two beers from local brewery Sun Up on their new patio before every home game. Other places offering great beer in the vicinity of the ballpark include Roosevelt Tavern (all kinds of great beer, including Scrimshaw Pilsner, Anderson Valley Boont Amber and a rotating Lost Abbey selection), Lost Leaf Gallery (a really nice selection of craft bottles), Tom’s Tavern (Moose Continued on Page 30...

Some of you may not like to deal with the hassle of going to the game, dealing with traffic, parking and lines for the rest room (especially if you enjoy a couple of Fat Tires during the game). So you find a local bar and settle back to watch the Diamondbacks or your favorite team on the television. That’s okay, we have great beer for you there as well. Try Mellow Mushroom in North Phoenix with an incredible

selection of craft beer. Boulders on Broadway in Tempe is another great spot to catch the game at the bar while enjoying everything from SKA Decadent to Lost Coast Great White. Taste of Tops in Tempe and the newly remodeled Sun Devil Wine Cellar and Pub are two places that always have a great selection of beer to choose from while you watch the game on their flat screen televisions. I could go on and on, but you get the point. There are plenty of great places to watch the game and enjoy great beer. Many of us enjoy sitting at home watching the game in the comfort of our own favorite chair with a variety of beer close at hand in a cooler or Continued on Page 31...

refrigerator. This is truly the way to get what you want. Pyramid has just released their summer seasonal, Curve Ball; it doesn’t matter what level of ballplayer you are, this is one Curve Ball you can handle. A refreshing, lighter beer done in the Kolsch style, it’s very enjoyable to watch a game with. Finally, what may be the consummate baseball beer, Bell’s Oberon. We are fortunate in Arizona because we get this beer year round. However, in the rest of the country, Oberon is brewed and released specifically for the baseball

season. Oberon Day this year was March 29th and the beer will last until late September, early October when it will fade with the World Series hopes of all but two teams.

Normism Of The Week

Beer is a great accompaniment to baseball. An easy sipping beer perfectly matches the pace of the game and no matter what you choose to drink, something just feels right about these two summer partners. Perhaps later in the summer, we can revisit this topic and look at great beers from the playoff cities. Until then, Play Ball!

Smoking a cigar should be an experience full of romance and enjoyment, and properly lighting a cigar is an important part of this process. Once you have the end of the cigar either nipped or punched, the best way to light a cigar is to use a wooden match or lit sliver of wood. Without allowing the flame to actually touch the end of the cigar, gently roll the edges of the cigar close to the flame until it is lit. In time the binder will catch fire and you’ll notice bluish wisps of smoke rising from the end. Continue to roll the cigar until the entire rim is lit then gently blow on the end of it. Once the entire end of the cigar has a light grey ash, softly blow OUT on the cigar to clear any soot and ash. Your cigar should now be ready to smoke my dear.

Thursday – April 8th

An Irish man walks into a pub and says, “Give three pints of Guinness please.” So the bartender brings him three pints and the man proceeds to alternately sip one, then the other, then the third until they’re gone. He then orders three more. The bartender says, “Sir, I know you like them cold. You don’t have to order three at a time. I can keep an eye on it and when you get low I’ll bring you a fresh cold one.” The man says, “You don’t understand. I have two brothers, but they’re abroad now. We made a vow to each other that every Saturday night we’d still drink together. So right now, my brothers have three Guinness Stouts too, and we’re drinking together. The bartender thought that was a wonderful tradition. Every week the man came in and ordered three beers. Then one week he came in and ordered only two. He drank them and then ordered two more. The bartender said to him, “I know what your tradition is, and I’d just like to say that I’m sorry that one of your brothers died.” The man said, “Oh, me brothers are fine - I just quit drinking.”

The Night Owl BY MARIA TOURTCHANINOVA

My April Fool’s was not as clever as anticipated. This is a friendly reminder for everyone to work harder on their creativity next year. Speaking of which, this week’s following events may just help get that inspiration going! Kevin Smith Sat April10th at The Orpheum Theatre Kevin Smith aka Silent Bob speaks! And according to good old Twitter the words are this, “Phoenix! On April 10th I will rise into your arms like some kinda…fiery bird.” Ah yes, wise words Kevin. The filmmaker of such cult classics as Clerks, Chasing Amy, Jay and Silent Bob and Dogma, among others is now here to share his comedy, world-view, and overall awesomeness. Picture something like an interactive standup performance. Ask him your questions, laugh at the answers and remember that nothing he says is off limits. Kevin talks about Hollywood, the world of film, his life and how he feels about Jonathan Ross. Three hours of such riveting entertainment is putting my attendance into high consideration. 7pm people! www.phoenix.gov/phxpccd.html 602-262-7272 Phoenix Fringe Festival NowApril 11th. Ah yes, the art world. It’s always changing and running about haywire. Well the Fringe Festival is there to celebrate the innovation and creativity of it all and then some. Taking place in arts venues throughout Downtown Phoenix, the Fringe is a concoction of improv and non-traditional theater showcasing both comedic and

provocative performances. There will be interactive art, sculpture, play with light and sound, dancers, performers, and artists that are here to make their statement in a whole new way. There is a multitude of shows to choose from ranging in pure humor to thought provoking brain-candy. It’s the 3rd annual Fringe and it’s only getting bigger and better, over 40 artists international, local and national give the Fringe the credibility it deserves. www.PhxFringe.org TASTE 2010 Sunday April 11th The 36th annual Taste event has once again tempted its way into the valley. Kierland Commons in Scottsdale is turned into an outside dinner party of sorts full of tasty morsels of the finest upscale international cuisine AZ has to offer. Restaurants such as Fogo de Chao- a Brazilian steakhouse think massive rotating meat, Satori Sushi and Modern Steak are just 3 of the 51 restaurants participating. Hosted by the Boys and Girls Club, TASTE shows you how donating and helping children’s lives can be just as fun as stuffing yourself with crab cakes. Yum. 6pm-9pm www. taste2010.com

Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights are a Dallas-based blues influenced rock outfit that recently signed to Atlantic Records. The band won “Best Group,” “Best Male Vocal” and “Best Blues Act” at the Dallas Music Awards and has drawn comparisons to acts ranging from Led Zepplin to Janis Joplin to Stevie Ray Vaughan. Jonathan Tyler & the Northern Lights have opened for acts such as O.A.R. and AC/DC and were on the road this summer with Kid Rock and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Jonathan Tyler & the Northern Lights recently finished recording their Atlantic debut with producer Jay Joyce which will be released in early 2010. Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes, who is a huge fan of the band, cowrote one of the tracks on the new album with Jonathan Tyler. Last month, Jonathan Tyler & the Northern Lights debuted at Austin City Limits Festival 09. The band performed to one of the largest crowds in the BMI stage’s history and provoked a roaring encore from the rain-soaked audience.

The Feisty Fashionista

Look people, just because we live in a hot desert in the Southwest doesn’t mean we can throw style out the window. Let’s try, shall we, to look crisp and stylish regardless of the on-coming heat. Read on for some quick tips. 1) Make a Herculean effort to resist wearing boat shoes. Period. End of story. I don’t care that they are offered up this season in a mind-numbing array of colors. Unless you live on Martha’s Vineyard and actually own a boat please don’t wear the dreaded boat shoes. They drop your he-man factor down to zero. Acceptable summer foot gear would be, well, anything else except for socks with your sandals.

I recommend Dr. Paul Ledesma at Valley Foot Surgeon’s in Old Town Scottsdale (480994-5977). In just a few treatments with his laser you can have healthy toenails again. Personal hygiene is very important to us women. Just because you are a dude does not excuse you from a little personal hygiene of your own. 3) For those of you who are walking around looking like you have a tumor growing from

4) If you are dressing up: match your belt color to your shoe color. Brown shoes will up your style factor especially if they are burnished. Remember round toe is in, square is way out.
