For the first time ever, visitors can see the breadth of Chiricahua Apache artist Allan Houser’s work at two of the Valley’s most prestigious destinations: the Desert Botanical Garden and the Heard Museum. Considered one of the best-known and celebrated American Indian artists of the 20th century, Houser’s work has been widely recognized throughout the world. The exhibition will feature paintings and sculpture that show the depth and range of works by this talented and honored artist, whose work became more abstract toward the end of his career.

Christina Ricci Enters the After.Life By Randy Montgomery First time feature film writer/director Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo’s After. Life will send chills up your spine as well as make you think; something most horror suspense films usually do not ask the viewer to do. The film begs the question, “what is life like after we die, and how do we accept death once we are gone?” Christina Ricci (Adams Family, Black Snake Moan) plays Anna Taylor, a young woman who ends up on a mortician’s table after being involved in a fatal car accident. The accident comes on the heels of a fight with her significant other Paul (Justin Long). After being knocked out in the accident, Anna wakes up in the funeral home being tended to by Eliot Deacon (Liam Neeson), a fairly odd and mysterious man. It seems as if Anna is caught between life and the after life. But is she really dead? Anna believes she is still alive, being held captive by a mad man, but Eliot insists that she is dead and must comes to terms with what lies beyond for her. What truly happens to the body and soul once we pass from this earth is something no one knows for sure, and Anna must figure this out for herself. Ricci doesn’t really have an answer either, “I don’t know what happens (when you die). I am confused about how I feel about death and whether if the soul remains with the body. In

the movie, Anna must try to manage what it feels like to accept her own death and accept someone telling you that you are already dead.” What isn’t up for debate is the pressure and intense situations Ricci was put through while making the film. One scene in particular takes place in a coffin, and Ricci was really in it as they were throwing dirt on top of it. She took it with stride though, “I was on my iPhone, six feet under in my own purple coffin. I was texting my friends.” “If a situation is intense, then I will laugh as much as possible. If it’s sad, I tend to laugh. There were a lot of things that were really creepy in this movie, like being in our own coffin,” says Ricci. “When it comes to doing your job, you have to be serious true. To do these kinds of roles, you have to commit yourself, and have an imagination. You have to immerse yourself in the situation.” Ricci enjoys her job though, “I like doing drama. With drama, you have to really, really connect and have a passion for what you are doing. When you do, it is very fulfilling. When you have worked on as many movies as I have, you can make anything fun. I just like being an actress.” .After.Life is a stylized suspense thriller that will certainly provoke lively discussion afterwards. Anchor Bay Entertainment’s After.Life opens in select theatres on Friday, April 9.

Last Sunday when the Yankees and the Red Sox took the field to start the baseball season, it was the 140th Opening Day in the history of Major League Baseball. Many things have changed throughout the history of the game, but one constant has been enjoying the feel of a cold beer (okay, maybe a lukewarm beer) in your hand as you watch the gentle rhythm of the

game. The sight of a beer sloshing over the top as a fan reaches for a foul ball, unsure of whether to give up on the beer or the ball is familiar as well. And, of course, that first beer at the ball park with a father or mother watching a team you grew up with, is a special memory for all. For me, it was the 1980 World Series, Game 2, Phillies vs Royals, watching the Continued on Page 29...

team I grew up with, enjoying a beer with my father as we sat in the upper deck. But I digress; the real issue is the availability of quality beer at the ballparks. Throughout the country, the folks that run the stadium concessions are starting to realize that good beer is an important part of people’s lives and we are starting to see it offered at the ballparks, albeit in limited quantities. Regardless, it’s a good feeling to be able to enjoy a craft beer while sitting in the stands. Chase Field, home of the Diamondbacks offers a small assortment of craft beers, including Fat Tire and Leinenkugels. Other stadiums offer a variety of craft beers as well. What is the best ball park for beer? Arguably, Coors Field in Denver, which features the award winning Sandlot Brewery right on the premises, may have the best opportunity to drink great beer. Sandlot, enjoyed by beer enthusiasts

for their variety of great beers, is more commonly known as the brewery that created Blue Moon. This popular beer based on the Belgian Wit style was developed by the talented brewers at Sandlot. By the way, if you are watching a Rockies game in Denver, the best place for a pregame or postgame meal and good beer is the Breckenridge Ballpark Brew Pub right across the street. If you’re just looking for a beer, a little further away on 22nd street is Great Divide Brewery and Tasting Room. Locally, good beer is starting to make an appearance in the downtown stadium area of Phoenix. Hard Rock Café will be offering two beers from local brewery Sun Up on their new patio before every home game. Smoking a cigar should be an experience full of romance and enjoyment, and properly lighting a cigar is an important part of this process. Once you have the end of the cigar either nipped or punched, the best way to light a cigar is to use a wooden match or lit sliver of wood. Without allowing the ﬂame to actually touch the end of the cigar, gently roll the edges of the cigar close to the ﬂame until it is lit. In time the binder will catch fire and you’ll notice bluish wisps of smoke rising from the end. Continue to roll the cigar until the entire rim is lit then gently blow on the end of it. Once the entire end of the cigar has a light grey ash, softly blow OUT on the cigar to clear any soot and ash. Your cigar should now be ready to smoke my dear.

Elvis Costello has followed his curiosity in a musical career spanning more than three decades. His versatility encompasses virtually every musical genre, from British punk and new wave to classical, jazz and American roots. Perhaps best known for his performances with The Attractions, The Imposters and pianist Steve Nieve, Costello has entered into acclaimed collaborations with many other artists, from Burt Bacharach to the Brodsky Quartet. Costello’s recent projects include his 2009 album, Secret, Profane & Sugarcane, and his celebrated talk show, Spectacle, on the Sundance Channel. This concert offers a rare opportunity to hear Costello perform solo. Concert-goers are invited to bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy a night of music under the desert sky. Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights are a Dallas-based blues inﬂuenced rock outfit that recently signed to Atlantic Records. The band won “Best Group,” “Best Male Vocal” and “Best Blues Act” at the Dallas Music Awards and has drawn comparisons to acts ranging from Led Zepplin to Janis Joplin to Stevie Ray Vaughan. Jonathan Tyler & the Northern Lights have opened for acts such as O.A.R. and AC/DC and were on the road this summer with Kid Rock and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Jonathan Tyler & the Northern Lights recently finished recording their Atlantic debut with producer Jay Joyce which will be released in early 2010. Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes, who is a huge fan of the band, cowrote one of the tracks on the new album with Jonathan Tyler. Last month, Jonathan Tyler & the Northern Lights debuted at Austin City Limits Festival 09. The band performed to one of the largest crowds in the BMI stage’s history and provoked a roaring encore from the rain-soaked audience.

Look people, just because we live in a hot desert in the Southwest doesn’t mean we can throw style out the window. Let’s try, shall we, to look crisp and stylish regardless of the on-coming heat. Read on for some quick tips. 1) Make a Herculean effort to resist wearing boat shoes. Period. End of story. I don’t care that they are offered up this season in a mind-numbing array of colors. Unless you live on Martha’s Vineyard and actually own a boat please don’t wear the dreaded boat shoes. They drop your he-man factor down to zero. Acceptable summer foot gear would be, well, anything else except for socks with your sandals.

2) And while we are on the subject of feet make sure yours, if you dare to show them, do not rival Frodo Baggins’. If your toenails are closer to talons, get your butt into a doctor’s office. I recommend Dr. Paul Ledesma at Valley Foot Surgeon’s in Old Town Scottsdale (480994-5977). In just a few treatments with his laser you can have healthy toenails again. Personal hygiene is very important to us women. Just because you are a dude does not excuse you from a little personal hygiene of your own. 3) For those of you who are walking around looking like you have a tumor growing from
