Nick@ Night By Nick Connell ARLO GUTHRIE - The Guthrie Family Rides Again At Mesa Arts Center There was a very special performance last weekend of American folklore at the Mesa Arts Center-Arlo Guthrie and the Guthrie Family rode into town on an ”Airline From Heaven” and a ‘Show and Tell’ for the ages. For those of us that had the blessing of growing up with folk music, this was a very special evening indeed. The Guthrie’s are family and their kindness goes back to the days of granddad Woody, who was loving and compassionate enough to write almost 3000 songs we still hear and feel as part of our American history. There’s a spirit in the blood of these Guthrie’s that brings a smile and a kind word when the music gets moving-and move they did all night. From the opening song “When the Lilacs Are In Bloom” by daughter Sara Lee Guthrie and husband Johnny Irion, to Arlo’s touching anthem “My Peace”, a farewell song from his dad Woody, this was pure joy and harmony all night. And as the stars were glowing in the west there was still a chorus of “This Land is Your Land” being heard in the winds around main street...maybe that ‘Lord in the Sky’ was letting us all know, everything’s going to be alright. God Bless you Arlo, and the whole Guthrie family. Thanks for giving us the best you can during times like these. THE RIVALS - Phoenix Film Festival Scottsdale through April 11th. The 10th Annual Phoenix Film Festival is underway with plenty of films and performances to catch. One with a great story line capturing the essence of our American culture is the documentary THE RIVALS, directed by Kirk Wolfinger. This coming of age high school football rivalry story between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’ in two Maine towns is well done. Kirk does an excellent job getting us inside the emotions and passions of two teams on a collision course to win a state football title. Anyone who grew up playing or cheering for their favorite high school team will fall in love with this revealing story of families, football and American traditions. Check PhoenixFilmFestival.com for more show times. JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR - In Tempe at ASU Gammage Ted Neeley was in town last week to wear the robes of Christ again for the Arizona faithful in the touring production of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR. Ted is still in top form and was backed up by a stellar cast including Sarah Hanlon as Mary Magdalene, John Twiford as Judas, Andrew Hartley as King Herod, Adam Scott Campbell as Peter, Matthew Myers as Simon, and a Company of voices passionate for the Messiah’s story. They were backed by a fabulous touring orchestra. Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber would be proud of this Nicholas Howey production! BREAK A LEG!

FILM! “Letters to God”, a boy’s faith is inspirational! Interview by Stan Robinson

Director David Nixon, who presented a moving story in 2008’s “Fireproof”, brings us the story of Tyler. Inspired by a true story, Tyler is a young boy fighting cancer, who writes letters to God, while touching the lives of those living in his neighborhood, particularly the mailman. Read how the movie came together with the help of Tyler’s real life father in my interview with director David Nixon at www.ScreenScene.org Starring Robyn Lively, Jeffrey Johnson, Tanner Maguire, Michael Bolten, and Maree Cheatham. Directed by David Nixon and Patrick Doughtie (co-director). Written by Patrick Doughtie, screenplay Art D’Alessandro, Sandra Thrift, and Cullen Douglas. Vivendi Entertainment release. Rated PG for thematic material. Runtime: 110 minutes.

“The Joneses”, modern sales ‘grifters’, at their finest! Review by Stan Robinson

I use the word ‘Grifters’, which literally refers to the practitioner of confidence tricks. As the tagline of ‘They’re not just living the American dream, they’re selling it’ gives us insight, the Joneses seem to the perfect successful family who moves into an upscale gated suburban community. We learn early on as to the real reason for their moving into the neighborhood, they’re a sales team with a milieu of products to sell to everyone in the community! With a veteran cast it’s a great twist on an old theme ‘grifters’. My review is at www.ScreenScene.org “The Joneses” Starring Demi Moore, David Duchovny, Gary Cole, Ben Hollingsworth, and Lauren Hutton. Written and directed by Derrick Borte. Roadside Attractions release. Rated R for language, some sexual content, teen drinking and drug use. Runtime: 96 minutes.

“City Island”, Andy Garcia is mesmerizing! Review by Stan Robinson

Andy Garcia, of Latin decent, delivers a very good performance as an Italian father! The Rizzos, a family who doesn’t share their habits, aspirations, and careers with one another, finds their delicate family balance begins to unravel by the arrival of a young ex-convict on parole, brought home by Vince (Andy Garcia), the patriarch of the family, who is a corrections officer in real life with a secrets of his own. With good performances all around, add this AZWeeklyMagazine.com

“The Perfect Game”, a historic and memorable true story! Review by Stan Robinson

I was 11 years old when this historic event took place in 1957! Being born and raised on Chicago’s south side automatically made me a Chicago White Sox fan. On the north side of course, were the Chicago Cubs fans. I barely remember the event as my dad and others at the time followed the little league team. “The Perfect Game”, based on a true story, follows a rag-tag, shoeless, poor group of kids from Monterrey, Mexico, who shocked the world by winning 13 games in a row and the Little League World Series, and in the final game, is the only perfect game ever pitched in the Championship! Kick Ass: A Comic Book with Phoenix Ties By Randy Montgomery

Every comic book lover’s dream; become a real superhero. That’s the premise of the new action flick, Kick Ass. The feature film is the big screen version of the widely popular Marvel Comic/Icon series of the same name written by Mark Millar and illustrated by John Romita, Jr. Dave Lizewski (played by Aaron Johnson), is not your typical superhero; he’s your everyday skinny nerd, a lover of comic books who dreams of being a crime fighter. Dave suits up in what he considers to be his “uniform” and accidentally becomes one, a beloved hero, known as “Kick Ass.” In order to battle a local crime boss, he teams up with a father/ daughter duo; Big Daddy and Hit Girl (Nicholas Cage and Chloe Moretz). Every superhero must have an arch nemesis and Kick Ass is no exception; his is Red Mist (Christopher MintzPlasse). Hilarity and violence ensue, seeing as how Dave really has no special powers. He must use what little strength he has and call upon the arsenal of weapons Big Daddy and Hit Girl have stock piled. Since most people will never actually become a superhero, what’s the next best thing for a comic book fan to do to live out their dream? Open a chain of comic book stores. That is exactly what Valley resident Mike Malve did in 1988. Malve opened Bubba’s Comic Book Store in Phoenix. A year later, Atomic Comics was born when he moved the store to Mesa and renamed it. Atomic Comics was not your “traditional” comic book store. Malve wanted something different. A store that would “allow the mainstream public to experience the thrill and adventure of comics and gaming.” The concept was so successful, that over the next few years, stores opened near Metro Center, Paradise Valley Mall and at Chandler Fashion Center. Our comic book loving friends in Kick Ass spend quite a bit of time in a Continued On Page 15....

Cinema Challenge! Each week you can win tickets for four, courtesy of UltraStar Cinemas, Stan Robinson, and AZ Weekly, by emailing the correct answer to the trivia question! Photo: Todd (Evan Peters, left), Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson, center) and Marty (Clark Duke, right) in KICK-ASS. Photo credit: Dan Smith comic book store in the movie, That store; Atomic Comics. Malve explains the partnership, “The creator (of the comic book) Mark Malar had been out here to the store a couple of times and made references to Atomic Comics in the story. Two years ago, I got an email from the producers saying that director Matthew Vaughn was interested in using the store. They wanted our likeness, logos, lanyards, store design, etc… That conversation started in June two years ago. The rest is movie history. It’s the details that really excite the store’s owner, “In the film, they hold up an actual Atomic Comics bag!” The series of comic books has “a huge cult following,” according to Malve. “Two partners came up with Kick Ass. Marvel has an off shoot called Icon. They picked it up for distribution. When Kick Ass came out, it sold out immediately. It was a huge success. The comic book retailers got it. The story hit the right audience; 18-34 year old males. They are the comic book demographic.” The other draw, “The whole story takes place in this world. It takes place in New York. It’s about a kid who hangs out at Atomic Comics and wants to be a superhero.”

Having seen the finished product, what does our local comic book aficionado think of the movie? “It’s great! The dark humor elements are so intense. Just the name Kick Ass is offensive to some people. Around the house, we call it “Kick Butt.” It’s an over the top fun comic book movie for adults.” Kick Ass opens Friday, April 16 in theatres nationwide. You can feel like a real superhero by visiting an Atomic Comics Store in Mesa (at 1120 S Country Club Drive), near Metro Center (at 2815 W Peoria Ave), in Paradise Valley (12621 N Tatum) and in Chandler at Chandler Fashion Center (outside of the mall).

After seeing the success of Dave’s alter ego in the movie, is Malve going to try the same thing? Not likely. He’s more of a business man. “I’m 44 years old and have had the stores for 23 years. I am at the store 6 days a week. If you want to be an entrepreneur and survive, you have to work hard and don’t stop.”

most likely will not be charged, and you will get full, not fat. 3. Ask how the food was prepared; don’t go by the menu. For instance, cholesterol-free does not mean fatfree; the dish could still be filled with calorie-dense oil. Neither does “lite” necessarily mean light in calories or fat. 4. Order from the “healthy, light, low fat” entrées on the menu. Most chains will even list the calories and nutritional content of such foods. 5. Beware of the low-carb options. Restaurant chains have jumped on the low-carb bandwagon, offering numerous low-carb options on their menu. But low-carb doesn’t mean low-cal.

EATING SMART WHEN DINING OUT Tips and Tricks for a Trim and Tasty Summer Suddenly it seems that chain restaurants like Applebee’s, T.G.I. Friday’s, Olive Garden, and Bennigan’s are almost as ubiquitous as the Golden Arches. No surprise. There are nearly 200,000 “table side” restaurants in the United States today, a number that continues to grow. For many, they offer a reliable, pleasant alternative to cooking -- plentiful servings, service with a smile, relatively good value for the dollar. But like fast-food outlets, these dining establishments can be ticking time bombs when it comes to nutritional health. Government surveys find that the food you typically eat when you’re not home is nutritionally worse in every way than the food you eat at home.

16

The good news is that’s changing. For instance, 7 out of 10 adults surveyed by the National Restaurant Association in 2003 said there are more nutritious foods available to them in such restaurants than there April 15th, 2010 - April 21st, 2010

were five years ago. Nearly all the chains have added healthier options to their menus -- if you know how to look for them. But whether you’re dining out at a major national chain or a locally owned family restaurant, following a few of these tips can guarantee you a pleasant dinner (or lunch) out without busting your health goals. 1. Above all else, be assertive. Dining out is no time to be a meek consumer. You need to be an assertive consumer by asking for changes on the menu. For instance, if an item is fried, ask for it grilled. If it comes with french fries, ask for a side of veggies instead. Ask for a smaller portion of the meat and a larger portion of the salad; for salad instead of coleslaw; baked potato instead of fried. Just assume you can have the food prepared the way you want it. Very often, the restaurant will cooperate. Below, you’ll find more specific requests. 2. Ask your waiter to “triple the vegetables, please.” Often a side of vegetables in a restaurant is really like garnish -- a carrot and a forkful of squash. When ordering, ask for three or four times the normal serving of veggies, and offer to pay extra. You AZ WeeklyMagazine.com

6. Ask the waiter to box half your entrée before it ever gets to the table. Or split an entrée with your dining partner. 7. Try double appetizers. If there is a nice selection of seafood- and vegetable-based appetizers, consider skipping the entrée and having two appetizers for your meal. Often, that is more than enough food to fill you up. 8. Order a salad before ordering anything else on the menu. Scientists at Pennsylvania State University found that volunteers who ate a big veggie salad before the main

course ate fewer calories overall than those who didn’t have a first-course salad. 9. But remember: Salads shouldn’t be fatty. This is a vegetable course -keep it tasty but healthy. That means avoiding anything in a creamy sauce (coleslaw, pasta salads, and potato salads), and skipping the bacon bits and fried noodles. Instead, load up on the raw vegetables, treat yourself to a few well-drained marinated vegetables (artichoke hearts, red peppers, or mushrooms), and for a change, add in some fruit or nuts. Indeed, fruits such as mango, kiwi, cantaloupe, and pear are often the secret ingredient in four-star salads. 10. Watch the add-ons to vegetable salads. Even salads that are mostly raw vegetables are a problem if they’re loaded with cheese and meats. Take the typical Caesar salad in most restaurants (the one topped with chicken or shrimp as well as plenty of cheese and mayo in the dressing). Add in the fried croutons and the calories add up to a whopping 560, with 36 grams of fat, 6 of them saturated. Italian antipasto salads also are a health challenge, with all their salami, spicy ham, and cheese. Get the salad, but ask for vegetables only. 11. Do the fork dip. The best way to combine salad dressing with salad? Get your dressing on the side, in a Continued On Page 20....

13. Read between the lines. Any menu description that uses the words creamy, breaded, crisp, sauced, or stuffed is likely loaded with hidden fats -- much of it saturated or even trans fats. Other “beware of” words include: buttery, sautéed, pan-fried, au gratin, Thermidor, Newburg, Parmesan, cheese sauce, scalloped, and au lait, à la mode, or au fromage (with milk, ice cream, or cheese).

12. Check the menu before you leave home. Most chains post their menus on their Web sites. You can decide before you ever hit the hostess stand what you’re going to order. Conversely, if you don’t see anything that’s healthy, pick another restaurant.

14. Ask the waiter to skip the bread basket. If you must have something to munch on while you wait for your order, ask for a plate of raw vegetables or some breadsticks. 15. Skip the fancy drinks. If you must order an alcoholic drink, forget the margaritas, piña coladas, and other exotic mixed drinks. They include sugary additions that only add calories. Opt instead for a glass

18. Drink water throughout the meal. It will slow you down, help you enjoy the food more, and let the message get to your brain that you’re full -- before your plate is empty. 19. Always dress up to go out. Even if it’s just a regular family restaurant. If you view eating out as an event or a treat, rather than a way to get an everyday dinner, you won’t eat out as often. And that’s good from both a health and a cost standpoint. 20. Skip the dessert. You can always have some sorbet or even a small piece of chocolate at home. That is much better healthwise than the Triple Chocolate Meltdown or a mountain of ice cream topped by a second mountain of whipped cream.

GAME! GRANT HILL AMONG DIVISIONAL WINNERS FOR 2009-10 NBA SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD Already the only two-time winner of the NBA Sportsmanship Award, Suns forward Grant Hill could win a third Joe Dumars Trophy this season after it was announced that Hill is among the 2009-10 divisional winners. Atlanta’s Al Horford, Boston’s Ray Allen, Cleveland’s Antawn Jamison, Denver’s Chauncey Billups and Houston’s Luis Scola were also selected by a five-member panel of former players as divisional winners for the 2009-10 NBA Sportsmanship Award. The NBA Sportsmanship Award, designed to honor a player who best represents the ideals of sportsmanship on the court, is voted on by NBA players. The NBA will announce the winner after the regular season. The 2009-10 NBA Sportsmanship Award winner will be presented with the Joe Dumars Trophy, named after the Hall of Famer and former Detroit Pistons great who played 14 seasons in the NBA and was the recipient of the inaugural NBA Sportsmanship

Award in 1996. The six-time AllStar was selected in honor of his distinguished and dignified career and for symbolizing the tradition the NBA wants to recognize with this award. Former NBA players Mike Bantom, Mark Jackson, Tom “Satch” Sanders, Kenny Smith and Eric Snow selected the six divisional winners from a pool of 30 team nominees. Each team nominated one of its players for this award. The annual award reflects the ideals of sportsmanship -- ethical behavior, fair play and integrity -- in amateur and professional basketball, a key focus of the league’s NBA Cares program efforts. Following is a list of the all-time winners of the NBA Sportsmanship award: ALL-TIME NBA SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD WINNERS Inaugural: Joe Dumars (1996) 1996-1997: Terrell Brandon, Cleveland 1997-1998: Avery Johnson, San Antonio 1998-1999: Hersey Hawkins, Seattle 1999-2000: Eric Snow, Philadelphia 2000-2001: David Robinson, San Antonio 2001-2002: Steve Smith, San Antonio 2002-2003: Ray Allen, Seattle 2003-2004: P.J. COYOTES FANS INVITED TO SUPPORT THE TEAM BY GROWING PLAYOFF BEARDS 2010 Coyotes “Beard-A-Thon” to benefit Coyotes Charities The Phoenix Coyotes are inviting fans to show their support for the team during the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs while supporting a worthy cause by launching the 2010 Coyotes “BeardA-Thon.” Fans are encouraged to grow their own playoff beards beginning April 14 in support of Coyotes Charities. The hockey playoff beard is one of the best traditions in sports, and now fans can join in on the tradition by “growing one for the team.” Participants in the Coyotes BeardA-Thon will invite family, friends and business associates to pledge their playoff beards. By joining the Coyotes Beard-A-Thon, fans pledge to maintain their beard as long as the Phoenix Coyotes remains in the playoffs. Fans who are unwilling, or unable, to grow playoff beards, can also pledge select Phoenix Coyotes players’ beards. For more information, or to enroll in the Coyotes Beard-A-Thon, please log onto www.beardathon.com/coyotes. The top five Beard-A-Thon fundraisers among Coyotes fans will receive a prize. The person that raises the most money will receive two glass seats to a Coyotes game during the

2010-11 season while second prize will be a team-signed Coyotes jersey. Third prize is two lower bowl tickets to a 2010-11 Coyotes game, fourth prize will be a signed 8x10 photo of Shane Doan and fifth prize is a Derek Morris autographed stick. Coyotes Charities is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life throughout Arizona communities by supporting non-profit organizations that promote healthcare, education, cultural arts and sports-related programs for children. During 2010 home playoff games, the Coyotes will auction off a variety of WhiteOutthemed memorabilia to benefit Coyotes Charities. A playoff beard is the superstitious practice of a National Hockey League player not shaving his beard during the Stanley Cup playoffs. The player stops shaving when his team enters the playoffs and does not shave until his team is eliminated or wins the Stanley Cup. It is believed that the tradition was started in the 1980s by the four-time Stanley Cup Champion New York Islanders. Some of the rules associated with growing a true playoff hockey beard include: starting with a clean shave the first day of the playoffs; not shaving one’s beard at any time during the playoffs; trimming only between rounds, never during; and doing one’s best to raise money for Coyotes Charities. For more information and additional playoff beard rules, visit www. PhoenixCoyotes.com.

RATTLERS RILEY SWANSON NAMED AFL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Arizona DB honored after team’s come-from-behind victory in Cleveland Arizona Rattlers defensive back RILEY SWANSON was recently honored as Defensive Player of the Week by the Arena Football League. Swanson, who wins the league honor in his first-ever AFL game, was part of a four interception effort by the Rattlers defense against veteran QB John Dutton and the Cleveland Gladiators. Swanson’s was the first pick of the game, which he returned 24 yards for a touchdown. The six points was the spark to the furious comeback that

was capped by a 61-56 win in the league’s opening week. A rookie defensive back for Arizona in 2010, Swanson spent the 2009 season with the Rio Grande Valley Dorados of the arenafootball2 and helped the team to a playoff appearance. Swanson also has spent time with the Buffalo Bills (NFL, 2007) and the Montreal Alouettes (CFL, 2008). Swanson spent four seasons at Wake Forest, finishing fourth all-time in passes defended with 33 and led his team with 14 interceptions as a senior. He led the Demon Deacons to an ACC Championship in 2006. The Rattlers are on a bye this week. They return to action on Friday, April 16 in the team’s home opener at USAirways Center. Kickoff is slated for 7:30pm.

The Arizona Rattlers are Back...2010! The Arizona Rattlers are back! They have reformed under new ownership and have recruited some of the best and brightest in the game to assure that football fans in Phoenix don’t have to suffer through another summer without the hard hitting action we love. They just played their first game of the season against a tough Cleveland Gladiators

team and came out on top 61 to 56. It was a great warm up for the home opener April 16th against Mike Ditka’s Chicago Rush at US Airways Center. If you just crawled out from under a rock, you may not have heard that the Rattlers did something that has never been done before. The team decided to cut all of us football fans a break by literally giving away all of the tickets to their home opener to anyone who wanted to go enjoy a great game. That’s right, they gave them away!!! They sacrificed over $500,000 in revenues to help all of us out as we deal with this lousy economy. On top of that, they have dirt-cheap ticket prices with lower bowl seats for as little as $17 for a single game or $10 per game for season tickets!

26

Arena football differs from college

football or the NFL in that it is played indoors on a much smaller field, which leads to more action and a feeling that you, the fan, are IN the game. Even the seats furthest from the field at an Arizona Rattlers are

closer to the action than the best at an NFL game. Because the Rattlers play at US Airways Center, most of the seats are so close to the action that fans really feel the hits and can get into the game. It’s a sports experience unlike any other. Another cool thing about the Rattlers is that they don’t have that snotty “we’re better than you” attitude. Team president Danny White and head coach Kevin Guy have selected players who love the game for all the right reasons. No one is getting rich but they are all doing it because they love, live, eat, breath and sleep football and they just have to suit up and play every chance they get! That’s the kind of athletes we should support, and if we can do it affordably and have a great time in the process, that’s even better. Check out the Arizona Rattlers. They’re the best deal in sports this town has to offer.

BEER! SECTION

BEER! Think Globally, Drink Locally By Chuck Noll There are many cities much smaller than Phoenix that have a much better and deeper rooted beer culture. Why is this? The answer is simple…a stronger tradition of successful local breweries. San Diego has over 10 breweries in the county; Denver has a brewing tradition so strong that Colorado is known as the “Napa of Beer”; Philadelphia has a rich brewing history dating back to colonial times and has some of the best craft breweries in the country. They also have one of the most successful beer weeks, a week dedicated to all things beer, in the country. Portland, Seattle and others all have those incredible beer cultures that only a city with many long standing local breweries can have. The good news is that Arizona has several great breweries that have been around for a while, as well as

some newer ones, such as San Tan Brewing, that have made a name for themselves. There is also an awareness of these breweries as never before. Let’s focus on five of the local breweries that are helping to lead Arizona to a world class beer culture. First up is Papago Brewing. Although no beer is brewed on premise, everything is contracted out. Papago may be more responsible than any other brewery for the growth of the Arizona beer culture. This is simply because they were the first bar of any kind to embrace craft beer and high end imports and have the success to stay in business until Arizona was ready for them. They are even directly responsible for the increased availability of out of state craft beers in the market, both through there repeated demands for more good beer, as well as being instrumental in the birth of Little Guy Distributing, the state’s first distributor with a focus on high end craft and import beers. Even with their 30 taps and 500 bottles, they still remain true to their name as a brewery. Proprietor Ron Kloth is closely involved with both breweries that produce his beer and works on new recipes. Their new Hopago IPA

represents an interesting take on the style. Produced as a single hop beer, they intend to change the hop varietal with each batch. The initial batch was made with Citra hops. In addition, regular beers such as the Great American Beer Fest medal winner El Robusto Porter and the local favorite, Orange Blossom are also featured. Besides the brewery, Papago can be found at The Yardhouse, Old Chicago – Mesa and Delux, to name a few.

Up in North Scottsdale, a small, literally, small brewery is making some big beers. Sonoran brewing takes up a very tiny space at the Pinnacle Patio Steakhouse located on Jomax just west of Alma School. This brewery is known for producing many great beers including Burning Bird Pale Ale, Victorian IPA and a white chocolate hefeweizen called Cordillera Blanca. These beers are seen all over town and can be enjoyed in bottles as well as draft. They also Continued on Page 31...

... continued from Page 30 produce a special beer every 100 batches. Their just released Sonoran 200 has received national attention. The strongest beer produced in Arizona, this non-carbonated beer is a whopping 19.37% alcohol by volume. It comes in a very nice designer bottle and should be served and consumed more like a fine brandy, not like a beer. Find the Sonora Beers at Mellow Mushroom, Pointe Hole in the Wall, Pat Murphy’s and many other fine bars. Down in the middle of Phoenix on Camelback just a few blocks east of the light rail stop on Central Avenue, sits Sun Up Brewing. While they have been around for years under different names, this new name represents their first efforts at getting their beers out to other establishments. With three products in distribution, Armadillo Red, Trooper IPA and Light Rail Cream Ale, as well as some other great beers available only at the brewpub, Sun Up has a great future ahead of it. Their brewmaster, Uwe Boer, looks the part, a tall German presence manning the brew kettle, he is known for producing some of the finest beers in the state. Find their beers at the Hard Rock Café, The Vig Uptown and Boulders on Broadway. Phoenix doesn’t have a monopoly on great local breweries. Inside a shopping mall in Tucson, just off Ina Road, sits Thunder Canyon Brewing. Steve Tracy keeps the fermenters full of great beer including a favorite at Pizzeria Bianco, Sandstone Cream Ale. Their Deep Canyon Amber and variety of seasonal favorites give everybody plenty to be excited about. Red, White and Brew Bistro and Original Wineburger are two other local spots that carry these fine beers. The brewery located closest to the big hole in the ground way up north takes its name from that big hole, also known as one of the most visited tourist spots in the country. Grand Canyon Brewing comes by its name honestly, making its home base in nearby Williams. With three beers in distribution, Sunset Amber, American Pilsner and Horseshoe

Cody’s Smokehouse in Cave Creek does incredible business with the Amber, and their bottled beers will soon be showing up in places like Tops, Sun Devil, AJ’s Fine Foods, Total Wine and BevMo. Expect to see exciting things from this newcomer. We have many other fine breweries in the state and finally seem to be gaining the perception of actually having a growing beer culture here. With this kind of local presence, it shouldn’t be too long before we start catching up to those cities with a head start. Who knows, maybe 2011 will see the first Arizona Beer Week. We can only hope.

Two fishermen were adrift in their rented boat due to an engine failure. While rummaging through the boat’s provisions, one of the men stumbled across an old lamp. To their amazement, a genie came forth. This particular genie, however, stated that he could only deliver one wish, not the standard three. Without giving much thought to the matter one man blurted out, “Make the entire ocean into beer!” The genie clapped his hands, and immediately the entire sea turned into the finest brew ever sampled. Simultaneously, the genie vanished. Only the gentle lapping of beer on the hull broke the stillness as the men considered their circumstances. One man looked disgustedly at the other whose wish had been granted. After a long, tension filled moment, he spoke: “Nice going idiot! Now we’re going to have to piss in the boat!”

Fire ChieF Ale The next best thing to a fire pole in your living room.

The most expensive beer in the world? It’s called “Tutankhamen” and is prepared according to the recipe recovered by a group of University of Cambridge archaeologists in Queen Nefertiti’s Temple of the Sun in Egypt. It costs US $52 a bottle, and is produced in limited and numbered edition.

BEER! SECTION

After consuming buckets of aul (or ale), the Vikings would head fearlessly into battle, often without armor or even shirts. In fact, “berserk” means “bare shirt” in Norse, and eventually took on the meaning of their wild battles.

The pursuit of beer changed the course of humanity forever in 5000 BC. Neolithic people abandoned their wandering lives for farming, to grow grain for brewing beer. Stand behind the people who keep uS Safe. order a fire Chief ale and we’ll make a donation to local fire departments and their related charities.

As the tobaccos in a cigar heat up, you’ll experience bursts of different flavors as they catch fire. Wood, leather, spice, pepper... there are a myriad of different flavor experiences you might enjoy while smoking a good cigar. And lets not forget how to properly extinguish your cigar upon completion darling. The answer is don’t. Simply let nature take its course. Once a cigar has run its course, it should naturally extinguish itself. It’s poor cigar etiquette to “butt out” a cigar, as it will create an unpleasant odor for everyone around you.

Tom Collins Basically gin with sparkling lemonade, the Tom Collins cocktail was born of the Great Tom Collins Hoax of 1874. The hoax began as a game, in which someone would ask another if he’d seen Tom Collins, asserting that this character (who didn’t really exist) had been spreading rumors about him. A flurry of urgent searching would ensue, and the supposedly maligned searcher would end up feeling foolish. The original Punk’d! Who knew?

Directions In a shaker half filled with ice cubes, add Tanqueray London Dry, lemon or lime juice, and sweet & sour mix. Shake well. Strain into collins glass filled with ice. Add club soda and stir well. Garnish with maraschino cherry and orange slice.

Old man Murphy had worked down at the distillery for years, but one day, he just wasn’t paying attention and he tripped on the walkway and fell over into the whiskey vat and drowned. The foreman thought it should be his job to inform the widow Murphy of his death. He showed up at the front door and rang the bell. When she came to the door, he said, “I’m sorry to tell you, but poor old Murphy passed away at work today when he fell into the vat and drowned.” She wept and covered her face with her apron and after a time, between sobs, she asked, “Tell me, did he suffer?” “I don’t think so,” said the foreman: “He got out three times to go to the men’s room.”

The Best New Way to Meet Singles!

Scottsdale Culinary Festival Tues April 13th-Sun April 18th The longest running culinary festival in the country is back once again to open your senses and make you lose the cherished appreciation you have had with Easy Mac since college. The Civic Center in Scottsdale will be turned into a foodie’s party paradise. Since not all of us have the dough (no pun intended) to fork (Ha!) it out on a personalized top chef dinner, most people attend the main event, the Great AZ Picnic. Here over 50 restaurants provide delectable samples of their most enticing goodies. It’s rarely a party without some alcohol and the culinary festival is well aware. To make sure all goes well, 4 specialty drink areas are set up to make your gaze a bit hazy. The Absolute Bistro, to me, is a happy wonderful place filled with crazy drink mixes containing one main important ingredient-vodka. If this is not to your liking then we will probably not get along, but the Bacardi Beach may have your soul mate running around a drunken mess. Moving on, the Southwest Festival of Beers contains 200 beers you can sample! Let’s take a poll over which tent will have the most college kids, or cougars… wait they’d probably be in the same one…hmm. Last but not least, the Camarone Margarita Village by Patron rounds out the Picnic featuring plenty blended and salted fun in a cup. You can explore all of these adventures to the sounds of 8 live bands rocking the 2 main stages within the Civic Center. Rounding out the night is Rock Lobster/The Chadwicks and the Chris Parker

Project. Aside from the Picnic, which is held Saturday and Sunday, plenty of chef and food inspired events will be taking place throughout the week. http://www. scottsdaleculinaryfestival.org Dirty Dogg Saloon Spring Fling Sat April 17th The annual Spring Fling is happening at the Dirty Dogg Saloon for Bike Week. Now you may be thinking that a party with drunken bikers may be a bit of a rough time. But come on people we all know they are lovable on the inside. But really, you don’t have to own a motorcycle to enjoy the Saturdays ruckus, after all it’s one big party. The Dirty Dogg is infamous for hosting a wild time. Think coyote ugly on red bull…and cheaper. It’s a high-energy place, wild crowd, and hula hooping, butt shaking, swinging from the rafters bartenders, cocktail girls, and ladies on liquid courage. One entertaining place. And yet this Saturday gets even better expanding the party into the gated parking lot. Cold beer, 3 live bands, and drink specials all make for a good time…. oh and again there’s the mass amount of scantily dressed girls running around in bikini tops… just in case you forgot it the first time I threw that in. Ahem. Gates open at 4pm. www.DirtyDoggSaloon.com 480368-8095

The only difference between Clinton and I was my ED.

Interesting Fun, Fact*

Goin’ Green Many people think that Al Gore is the Father of the Going Green movement and the theory of global warming. However, in 1716 Sir Richard Bennett coined the term ‘Going Green’ when he and a few buddies discovered their penises had become green after sleeping with the same Lady of The Night, Rachael Fields. In those days it was very common for men to share or ‘recycle’ the same cotton condom. Thinking these condoms would prevent venereal disease and pregnancy. A few of these men fell ill and died prematurely because penicillin was a few centuries away. One man, however, died after trying to train a grizzly bear. *This fact may be made up or wrong.

Known for their energetic live performances, they will be promoting their new CD titled, “Destroy the Boy”. Also featured on the show is the Valley’s hardest working band, Property Six. CAVE CREEK ANNUAL GOLF OUTING

Monday April, 26 2010 at Tatum Ranch Golf Club Carefree-Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce’s annual golf outing is set for Monday, April 26 at the 18-hole Tatum Ranch Golf Club, 29888 N. Tatum Ranch Drive in Cave Creek. Reservations are available now through April 12. The fee is $125 per player, which includes dinner with two drink tickets and a free golf foursome to be played at a later date. Checks may be made payable, and mailed to, the Carefree Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 734, Carefree, AZ 85377. Raffles and Sponsorships Raffle tickets are also available for $10 each, with just 400 being sold. The $4,000 pot will be split between the winning ticketholder and a college-bound Cactus Shadow High School student. The winner does not need to be present for the drawing, which will take place during the after-

golf dinner time. Other raffles will also be drawn. Sponsorships ranging from $200 to $3,000 are also available. Raffle-prize donations are being accepted, with a minimum value of $100. Amounts less than that will be bundled to result in $100-value prizes. Tournament registration begins at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. The four-player scramble format takes the pressure off golf-ability and places it more on camaraderie. “The emphasis is on fun, and fundraising,” said Noah S. Kendrick, the chamber’s Golf Committee chairman and partner of the Edward Jones office in Carefree. “It’s a good chance to meet new people, have some fun and help a student go to college. What better reason is there to take an afternoon off?” More information about the CarefreeCave Creek Chamber of Commerce is available at 480-488-3381 or www. carefreecavecreek.org.

A Jewel in the Desert Most folks drive up to Carefree or Cave Creek, spend the day shopping, dining, partying and drive home tired. The smart folks enjoy the town of Carefree and Cave Creek, stay at a marvelous resort hotel and wake up refreshed. That destination, the Carefree Resort and Villas, should be the next night-cap for your day-trip.

The Villas… And for those who want even more privacy, try the Villas. A luxury, fullystocked, condo experience tucked just a bit farther into the Desert, just the way you’ll like it. Ah, the private pool & Jacuzzi, the putting green, the fire pit, room service, spa, golf privileges and tennis courts. You could get used to this. A home-away-from-home for the entire family. The entire resort is very family-friendly.

Off The Beaten Path…

Book your stay today!

The resort itself is located just east of the well-worn tourist-traveled Cave Creek Road that leads you to the heart of Cave Creek. Only a mile or two from the action, yet so removed that you actually feel cut off from civilization no matter where you stand on the resort grounds. It’s quiet and peaceful here, like a resort should be. From your spacious balcony or patio, you can actually see the stars and hear the sounds of the desert at night. No traffic. No sirens. No stress. They call it “Carefree” for a reason.

This is a Good Deal… This is a resort for the valueconscious traveler that appreciates a quality experience. It’s not a snooty, high-end resort with pretentious claims on your wallet. Everything is reasonable, but not cheap. You’ll find the room rates to be less than Scottsdale chic and even lowerpriced than some extended stay hotels with far less to offer. The food is excellent and the staff couldn’t be more accommodating. Enjoy the sparkling resort pool, the luxury day spa facilities, the Lariat Grill fine dining experience and feel like your in Palm Springs, but still be less than 30 minutes from home.
