The eight all-star members of Smith’s Red-Hot Skillet Lickers have performed and recorded with Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat ‘King’ Cole, Frank Sinatra and Tito Puente, to name a few. Based in San Francisco, Smith and the Skillet Lickers maintain a busy schedule of more than 250 performances per year, including extensive touring throughout the United States and Canada, and have released three critically acclaimed albums on Smith’s Fat Note Records label: Miss Smith to You, Everybody’s Talkin’ ’Bout Miss Thing and One Hour Mama.

Long known for displaying a variety of feline species such as jaguar, leopard, ocelot, and of course, AZ’s first rare white tiger, Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium welcomes its first new lioness in nearly 2 decades. The young female seems to have settled into her temporary home located at the new baby Animal Nursery. Like other large cat species, lion cubs tend to grow in size quickly as they transition from an entirely milk diet to one with meat mixed in! In a few weeks, the as yet unnamed lioness will be moved to a large outdoor display. Also on display inside the nursery are baby warthogs and porcupines, while many other newborns such as lemurs, gibbons and other primates, kangaroo joeys, swans, antelope can be found throughout the zoo and aquarium grounds.

The Story Behind The Mask

ABT’s Executive Producer and CoFounder Kiel Klaphake stars as Erik (“The Phantom”). Last season, Kiel appeared as Frank Butler in ABT’s production of Annie Get Your Gun. For two years, Kiel performed the role of Raoul in the original Hal Prince production of The Phantom of the Opera in Hamburg, Germany. Stateside credits include Show Boat, La Bohème, The Merry Widow and The Yeoman of the Guard, among others. Also at ABT, he was the musical conductor for Brigadoon and stage director of Cabaret and Gypsy.

When you say the word “Phantom” in the context of talking about a musical, most people tend to think first (and perhaps only) of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit show, The Phantom of the Opera. But it is another Phantom, also based on the same chilling story by Gaston Leroux that will haunt the Arizona Broadway Theatre stage from April 23 through May 30. The writers of this Phantom, Arthur Kopit and Maury Yeston, had just finished their musical Nine (winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1982) when they were approached by Geoffrey Holder to write a musical based on the Leroux novel. Holder had obtained the rights from the Leroux estate to have the novel created into a musical in America. “There is a lot of history in the writing of this Phantom that many people don’t realize,” commented Mace Archer, the show’s director. “The authors were skeptical of the project at first, and only after much thought did Yeston decide that with a slight change in the story, the Phantom could be a Quasimodo or Elephant Man type of character – one who’s sympathetic.

In 1984, with much of the Phantom score completed, Yeston, Kopit and Holder were in the process of raising money for a Broadway production when Variety magazine published an article about a production of another musical version of The Phantom of the Opera being written in England by Lloyd Webber. When his version became a smash hit in London, and it was announced that the Lloyd Webber piece would move to Broadway, Yeston’s Broadway investors backed out, and Phantom was shelved.

Valley favorite Jeannie Shubitz returns to ABT to portray Christine. A native of Tucson, Jeannie recently returned to Arizona from New York City. Recent performances include Margaret in

The Light in the Piazza at Phoenix Theatre, and Emily in A Christmas Carol and Peggy in The Taffetas at ABT, where she also appeared as Fiona in Brigadoon, Sarah in Guys and Dolls and Marian in The Music Man. Other credits include: Philia (Funny Thing... Forum), Evelyn Nesbit (Ragtime), Miss Dorothy Brown (Thoroughly Modern Millie) and Mabel (Pirates of Penzance). An Appetite for Quality Entertainment An important component of the ABT experience is the menu that Chef Allen Dowe creates to add to the atmosphere—and in this case the concentration is French cuisine. Guests are offered tableside dining in an intimate and elegant auditorium two hours prior to the performance. Appetizers and desserts are also available for purchase, and ABT has a full bar in its spacious lobby. ABT is conveniently located south of W. Bell Road off the Loop 101, east of the Peoria Sports Complex. Parking is free. For tickets call the Box Office at 623.776.8400 or visit www.azbroadwaytheatre.com

Phantom

ABT to head up an award-winning production team that includes Kurtis W. Overby (music director/ choreographer), Kara Thomson (scenic designer), Tim Monson (lighting designer) and Martha J. Clarke (costume design). Mace’s prior work at ABT includes his stage direction of Jekyll & Hyde and Annie Get Your Gun and his work onstage as Marley in A Christmas Carol.

After Kopit saw a performance of The Phantom of the Opera, he realized that the approach he and Yeston had taken was much different from Lloyd Webber’s, and that their version could still work on the musical stage. The Yeston/Kopit musical was finally produced by Theatre Under the Stars in Houston, Texas, in 1991, and has gone on to be a regional theatre hit. Phantom has been referred to as “the greatest musical hit never to be produced on Broadway.” The Faces Behind The Production Director Mace Archer returns to AZWeeklyMagazine.com

But “Oceans” is more-or-less a clip show. The essential element of story is missing and therefore “Oceans” is more “art” than it is “movie.” Moreover, the educational element is also quite small as a result of that aforementioned A.D.D. thus further limiting its appeal. Granted, some moviegoers will love “Oceans” but the majority will be begging for it to end so that they can come up for air.

“Kick-Ass”, don’t let the trailers stop you! Review by Stan Robinson

Think ‘Kill Bill’ meets ‘Watchmen’ and you’ll have the essence of the visual presentation for “Kick-Ass”! Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) is a low-key almost ‘nerdy’ high school student and comic book fan that one day decides to become a super-hero, even though he has no powers or training, only the thought that he wants to! The young actress Chloe Moretz, also starring in “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”, at 13 years old with the role of ‘hit-girl’, is remarkable! My review is available at www.ScreenScene.org “Kick-Ass”, starring Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz, Nicolas Cage, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Mark Strong, and a special appearance by Craig Ferguson. Directed by Matthew Vaughn. Written by Jane Goldman. Based on the comic book series by Mark Millar. Lionsgate release. Rated R for strong brutal violence throughout, pervasive language, sexual content, nudity and some drug use S N some involving A P children. I Runtime: 117 T minutes.

Disney’s ‘Oceans’ sinks without story Review by Joseph J. Airdo

In true Walt Disney Pictures fashion, “Earth” turned the nature documentary genre on its head and drew audiences into a fable, of sorts. Unfortunately, the studio’s sophomore effort “Oceans” turns the genre over again and tries to prop it back up on its feet. Needless to say, its knees just could not hold up. According to press materials about the film, nearly three-quarters of the planet’s surface is covered by water and “Oceans” chronicles the mysteries that lie beneath. When directors Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud adhere to that formula, the movie is truly enchanting. However, they too often take their cameras above the tide. A fantastic example of a scene in which the filmmakers are on their game takes place under the moonlight. For 10 minutes or so, moviegoers slither along the ocean floor with creatures’ unseen. Feelings of excitement, fear and intrigue wash over us with every majestic shot. And, occasionally, we get to spend a fair block of time with each creature. But not always. And that is the overreaching problem with the entire flick. It is almost as if the filmmakers wanted to pack so many AZWeeklyMagazine.com

‘The Secret of Kells’, An Animated Indie Worth a Look

Review by Randy Montgomery Director Tom Moore takes audiences on an animated journey that is much different from the state of the art, technologically advanced computer-generated 3-D features that moviegoers have been lining up for at your local multiplex for recently. In fact, “The Secret of Kells” more than likely won’t appear at too many

mainstream cinemas: which is quite unfortunate.

Kells’ animation is crude by today’s standards, and it’s supposed to be. It’s not about the animation anyway; it’s all about the story. While the film is appropriate for all ages, adults will probably enjoy the message delivered the most. Coming in at a significantly modest 75 minutes, “The Secret of Kells” manages to pack a creative plot into a short running time. The film begins in a small medieval village, one that is surrounded by an enormous block a wall; a fortress of sorts. The village leader seeks to protect the citizens in from potential invaders and Viking barbarians. Inside the village monastery lives an inquisitive 12-year old boy named Brendan. He is fascinated with “The Book of Kells,” an incomplete mystical book which was written in 800AD and is actually based upon the gospel according to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. When a master illuminator comes to town, Brendan’s curiosity peaks even more. His desire to find the book and complete it sends him on a journey into the enchanted forest outside the boundaries of his community. As previously mentioned, the animation is crude, but discerning audiences will be fascinated with the use of color and abstract shapes. “The Secret of Kells” was nominated for “Best Animated Feature” at this year’s Academy Awards and for good reason. This little indie won’t receive much play at the box office in current form, but my guess is that if a live action version was created using the same story, with A-list actors, it would be a smash hit. “The Secret of Kells” is now playing at Harkins Valley Art in Tempe, AZ.

The Manic Organic I mentioned the movie “Food In.” last week and wanted to say a bit more about that flick. It actually is mostly a documentary, I say mostly because there is always some bias somewhere, one way or another. But for the most part this film does a pretty good job at telling a story - a great story that will get you going faster into the organic and preservative-free path. Now, this ain’t no movie review column, so I’m not going to do that here. Instead I urge you to just watch the film yourself, figure out your own opinion, and do what you think is best - fast food or slow food? “Food Inc.” is on video and was nominated for an Academy Award, so it’s got some punch behind it, be careful. You may never go back - to fast food that is. -MO

GAME! Rattlers Embrace Kurt Warner’s ‘First Things First Foundation’ For Those In Need Owners of the Arizona Rattlers have committed $20,000 to The Kurt Warner First Things First Foundation and will donate a portion of the proceeds for single game tickets during their next home game on Friday, April 23rd against The Tulsa Talons. The team hopes that the 17,000 fans with free tickets to the Arizona Rattlers vs. Chicago Rush game on April 16th will also be inspired to follow their lead and make a small donation, if financially able. “We are honored to be in a position as an organization to not only donate to this worthy organization professionally and personally but to also create a forum where our fans that are able to help out can do so as well,” said Danny White, Team President, “We have great fans and owners who are involved in the community. LIVE OR DIE?

HARD THROWING AND EASY GOING Edwin Jackson is already happy in Arizona, and excited to be part of a strong, young team. It wouldn’t be accurate to say Edwin Jackson walks through the clubhouse. He strolls through. That’s it. He strolls through the clubhouse with almost comically oversized headphones on his ears and a smile on his face. That smile might as well be tattooed on, because it was there when he went through Spring Training drills, it’s there when he’s talking to the clubhouse attendants about that day’s lunch spread, it’s there when he puts out his hand to shake that of a D-backs team employee he hasn’t yet met, and it’s there when he meets his new teammates. Sometimes in sports, to say someone is happy to be there is an insult. But when you understand the hype and the humbling and the history and the hurdles in this case, you can say that in the positive spirit in which it’s intended — Jackson’s happy to be here. With a lot of players, especially one with a bazooka of an arm, if you saw that they were on their fourth franchise in six years it’s natural to wonder why. And fairly or not, one can’t help but wonder if they just didn’t fit in. Any notion of that was dispelled very quickly in Arizona.

Edwin Jackson blended right in with the D-backs as soon as pitchers and catchers reported, seeming like he’d been on the team for years. Photography: Jordan Megenhardt

“As a person, he’s gotten high marks,” D-backs General Manager Josh Byrnes said. “He’s a very competitive, upbeat guy. You want starting pitchers to feel a sense of ownership over wins and losses and he seems to have that kind of makeup. “We did a lot of background on him prior to the trade as we would with anyone and he got very strong reviews from every place he’s been. His makeup is definitely a plus.” That’s a sentiment that wasn’t just noted from a front office or coaching perspective, but also from the guy whose locker was right next to Jackson’s in Spring Training. “I think he’s going to be good and fit in real nicely,” Brandon Webb said. “He’s really laid back, it seems to me. When he’s out there, he’s going to be pretty intense, but off the field, when we’re doing stuff and just being in the clubhouse, he seems really cool and laid back. “He jokes around a lot and he’s a smooth guy. That’s how I’d say he is. He’s smooth.”

When the Suns have the ball ...

SUNS SHIFT FOCUS TO BATTLE-AILING BLAZERS Stealthy Phoenix Squad Looking Confident and Capable Talk about living up to your nickname. Nobody has been hotter than the Suns since the All-Star break, finishing up the season on a 23-6 tear that surprisingly got them home-court advantage. It sends Phoenix into the playoffs as perhaps the stealth team of the West, still somewhat overlooked, yet very confident and capable. Steve Nash and Amar’e Stoudemire have never looked better playing together and even without injured center Robin Lopez, they’re capable of making a run. The Trail Blazers might as well have the logo of the Red Cross on the front of their uniforms, as 13 different players have missed a combined 309 games to injury or illness this season. All-Star guard Brandon Roy became the latest victim when he tore the meniscus in his right knee on Sunday in L.A. against the Lakers. He’ll be evaluated before the series begins. The relentless Blazers made the key acquisition of Marcus Camby on Feb. 16 and have let none of the setbacks stop them, finishing the season on a 19-8 run, winning 13 of their last 17 games. They took two of three from the Suns this season.

The Suns will look to spread the floor and run, run, run. Nash might as well be Leonard Bernstein conducting the Philharmonic, controlling the ball and the tempo as the Suns lead the league in scoring at 110 points per game. Nash and Stoudemire are like a couple of fat men at an all-youcan-eat buffet with the pick-and-roll, never tired of filling themselves up again and again. The Suns are also the best long-distance shooting team in the league, connecting on more than 41 percent from behind the arc as Nash, Channing Frye, Jason Richardson and Jared Dudley can all fill it up. The Blazers will use their size and use physicality to try to punish the Suns. It will be veteran Andre Miller’s job to stay in front of Nash, cut off his forays all the way to the hoop and don’t let him catch the Blazers off-guard for those step-back 3-pointers that he’ll put up late in a close game. Camby has the length and, even at 36, still the quickness to cover up Frye when he starts firing from long range.

When the Blazers have the ball ... It took a while at the start of the season for Miller and coach Nate McMillan to get on the same page, but now the veteran point guard is at home spreading the ball around to the scorers, Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge, and taking advantage of his own opportunities, especially posting up. If Roy is close to being fully fit, he’ll give Richardson all he can handle going to the basket to either finish himself or dish to the skilled Aldridge, who can score from anywhere on the floor. The Suns live by the old saying that the best defense is a good offense and the 105 points a game they surrender is the fourth-highest in the league and most of any playoff team. Phoenix isn’t looking to put a lid on opponents as much as get them playing at a faster tempo to take quicker shots and create more opportunities at the other end. There is no lock-down defender in the bunch, but they do have some

bite now as a team, though the job to control Roy will go to Richardson. With Lopez, they’re quite undersized and vulnerable inside to the bigger, stronger Suns.

In the clutch As if he doesn’t control the rest of the game, the ball might as well be on a string attached to Nash’s hand coming down the stretch for the Suns. He’ll be looking to run the pickand-roll to get Stoudemire an easy bucket, but you can’t sleep on Nash himself going all the way to the rim or stepping back to create space to launch a trey. All game long, Roy is looking to use his speed and strength to get into the paint and create scoring chances for Aldridge and himself. But when the game is on the line, he loves the pressure of taking the big shots and has earned his All-Star status by making them.

Wild cards Already undersized, the Suns will play the first round without injured center Robin Lopez. Yet with coach Alvin Gentry sending them back to their old high-octane offensive roots, they’re having fun and are never out of any game. The Blazers could have given up on the season any number of times, starting back in December when they lost their centers Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla. It seems everyone on the roster has been injured at one time AZWeeklyMagazine.com

or another, but coach Nate McMillan -- who tore his Achilles’ tendon -- has kept them from feeling sorry for themselves. They play hard, play tough and never stop playing.

FUN FACTS: SUNS VS. TRAILBLAZERS This will be the 7th time Portland and Phoenix have matched up in the postseason. The last series: 98-99 in the first round. Both teams have won 3 series a piece. This will be the 4th time these two have matched up in the first round. Phoenix won three of those series (78-79, 83-84, 94-95) while Portland took a 3-0 sweep in the 98-99 lockout season. The Suns have never won a playoff game in the Rose Garden (0-2). Although the Suns did murder the Memorial Coliseum, defeating the Blazers 117-109 courtesy of Charles Barkley’s 47 point performance. Portland is 2-3 at the America West Arena/US Airways Center in the playoffs. This is only the third time they will match up in a seven-game series. The Blazers have never lost to the Suns in a 7-game series, taking the conference finals in 89-90 (4-2) and the conference semis 91-92 (4-1). Portland has lost 17 of their last 20 games in the US Airways Center. April 22nd, 2010 - April 28th, 2010

Rule number one: Enjoy it to the fullest baby! Savor the moment. Smoking a good cigar is like drinking a glass of fine wine or vintage Cognac. Pull the smoke into your mouth and savor its flavor. Take long draws on the cigar instead of short puffs. This will help ensure that the cigar burns evenly from end to end. Rolling the cigar in your fingers as you smoke is another way to help ensure a smooth and even burn. Eventually you’ll have a big head of ash on the end of the cigar. Don’t knock the ash off! Let nature take its course and allow the head to grow until it’s ready to fall off in its own time. Sit back, relax and indulge.

World Beer Cup

Sean Paxton, the meal itself was spectacular. To really understand how a beer dinner is put together, the meal is the perfect guide book. To prepare a proper beer dinner for 2,000 people takes:

Saturday night, April 10th was the world’s largest beer dinner, with the greatest collection of brewing industry people to gather in one place. They were there for a great meal, but it was the post dinner presentations that really drew them in. The bi-annual World Beer Cup was held that night in the ballroom of the Chicago Sheraton. It is always a special event, and this time the organizers made doubly certain of it.

* 600 gallons pairing beer * 200 gallons cooking beer * 400 pounds butter * 300 loaves of bread * 500 pounds onions * 600 pounds pork belly * 12 gallons demi-glace * 160 pounds mushrooms * 275 dozen eggs * 100 pounds sugar * 160 pounds malt * 6 gallons honey

The beer pairing was Firestone Walker Union Jack IPA The fourth course featured Chef Paxton’s homage to Chicago’s meat packing history and included all things swine. The beer pairings for this were Allagash Curieux and a locally produced stout. Desert was just a little sweet with malted TCHO chocolate bread, caramel malt, TCHO cocoa nibs, Left Hand Brewing Milk Stout, cream and vanilla bean infused bread pudding topped with a butter Shoreline Brewery Beltaine Scotch Ale hard sauce and a Fuggles hop infused mascarpone Chantilly cream. This was served with another locally brewed bourbon barrel stout. All in all quite a meal, and a prime example of how to throw a real party. But that was not the reason for the gathering,

although it would be sufficient for most. Up next came the presentation of the World Beer Cup Awards. The World Beer Cup is a whole different animal. Over 3,300 beers from 44 different countries were entered and awards were given in 90 different style categories. It took almost as much time to judge the different categories as it took to plan the beer dinner. 179 judges spent three days going through the beers to determine the winners (yes, that is, on average, over eighteen beers judged by each member of the panel) The complete list of winners can be found at www.worldbeercup. org, but let’s look at some highlights of beers available in Arizona. Alaskan Brewing took home a gold and a bronze for their aged Smoked Porter and their Barleywine. Alesmith also had a gold and bronze for Wee Heavy and their annual release of Decadence. Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout from Anderson Valley won a bronze medal as did Great Divide for Hoss Rye Lager. Brugse Zot, produced by de Haalve Maan in Brugge won a silver medal; so did Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter and Rodenbach. Former World Champion Tomme Arthur was awarded a silver medal for Hot Rocks Lager, a unique beer brewed very traditionally, with heated rocks. The Bruery took two golds home, one for a wild yeast aged version of their popular Autumn Maple and the other for Oude Tart, an Flemish Red style. A gorilla walks into a bar, pulls up a stool, and orders a beer. The bartender pours him a tall, frothy mug and says “That’ll be five bucks.” As the gorilla is paying for his beer, the bartender adds “You know... we don’t get many gorillas in here.” To which the gorilla replies, “At five bucks a beer, it’s no wonder...”

categories that did not produce a gold medal winner as judges felt that no beer was worthy of the gold. One of the big winners of the evening was Ballast Point Brewing. In addition to three gold medals for their India Pale Lager, Bourbon Barrel Aged Scottish Ale and Sculpin IPA, the boys from San Diego took home a bigger prize. They were named World Champion Brewery in the small brewery category. Their beers are

locally available at most places carrying fine craft beers. The World Beer Cup was the culminating event of the Craft Brewers Conference, an annual event held in a rotating location that provides an opportunity for craft brewers and craft wholesalers from across the country to get together and attend seminars on topics of interest, make and renew business relationships, and maybe drink a few really good beers as well.

GROG! SECTION

HAPPY HOUR What is GROG? In 1740 Admiral Vernon of the British fleet decided to water down the navy’s rum. Needless to say, the sailors weren’t too pleased and called Admiral Vernon “Old Grog”, after the stiff wool grogram coats he wore. The term “grog” soon began to mean the watered down drink itself. When you were drunk on this grog, you were “groggy”.

One night in Old Dublin, Mikey O’Grady’s pregnant wife goes into labor and they find a doctor nearby. “What d’ya want me to do, Doctor?” “Hold the lantern, Mikey. Here it comes!” The Doctor delivers the child and holds it up for the proud father to see. “Mikey, you’re the proud father of a fine strapping boy!” “Saints be praised, I...” Before Mikey can finish the Doctor interrupts, “Wait a minute. Hold the lantern, Mikey.” Soon the doctor delivers a second child. “You’ve a full set now, Mikey. A beautiful baby daughter!” “Thanks be to...” Again the Doctor cuts in, “Hold the lantern, Mikey, hold the lantern!” Soon the Doctor delivers a third child. The doctor holds up the baby for Mikey’s inspection. “Doctor?” asks Mikey, “Do you think it’s the light that’s attracting them?”

Rock the Zoo Friday April 23 The 10th annual fundraiser for the Phoenix Zoo is back with none other than Vertical Horizon and Marcy Playground! Who isn’t still obsessed with both of their late 90’s number one hits Everything You Want and Sex and Candy? Concert aside, guests can sample beverages from 30 different brewers and wineries all while reminiscing the 90’s and saving the zoo animals with 3000 of your closest friends. Cheers! 7-11pm www.phoenixzoo.org/ RocktheZoo2010/ Stone Rose Lounge 2-Year Bday Party April 24th Stone Rose lounge at the Fairmont has to be one of the chicest places I have been to. It might as well say, “bring your date here for brownie points.” The lounge itself is sophisticated and stylish with wooden floors, panoramic windows and leather sofas. But stepping outside onto their spacious patio is what got me going before the red-bull did. This amazing patio thrusts you under the midnight sky while modern fire pits calmly blaze away any nighttime chills. Lined with contemporary white angled couches, scenic views and creative martinis, this place makes you want to discuss that penthouse loft you should be getting soon - or that just may be me. They will be throwing their 2-Year Birthday Party Saturday night, perfect time to check it out. In theme with the recent Alice in Wonderland outbreak, Stone Rose will be giving away prizes for the best “mad hat.” As everyone knows, odd hats and mixed drinks make out for an interesting time. Fairmont Scottsdale 480.419.3190 MIM Grand Opening Saturday April 24th If you have ever driven down Tatum Blvd off the 101 Freeway, you

may have passed a giant 2-story architectural building titled “MIM.” For the longest time I wondered what in the world it stood for and was almost curious enough to Google it - almost. The time has now come for MIM to reveal itself to the world as the Musical Instrument Museum. And no it is not a bunch of old trombones hanging on a wall. MIM engulfs the very essence of what music is culture. Through 5 expansive galleries, the Geo-Galleries, every country in the world is represented musically. You will be able to see, feel, hear and sense how all people share their world through music. Even some of the exhibits are deemed to be spectacular. For example, being able to hear the tradition of the Beijing Opera or a Munich Chapel during the Renaissance. Literally anything you can imagine from the past to the present. The Artist Gallery showcases famous concert footage, photos, memorabilia, iconic instruments and musicians. There is a lot to see, explore and learn. MIM’s curators have turned the globe upside down completing this collection-one of its kind, something like 3000 pieces. MIM is promising to be a unique experience into the world around us for all those that appreciate music, namely all of us. http://www.themim.org

PRISONER RELEASED FROM PRISON FOR NOT FOLLOWING THE RULES Convicted felon , Marty Clemens, who was serving a 5 year sentence for battery and lewd acts with an immigrant was released Tuesday morning for failure to follow the proper protocol at Georgia’s State Penitentiary in Garnersville, Georgia. Clemens was seen putting his eating utensils in the wrong bin and using too many condiments. Deputy Alex Bitca was quoted as saying, “We ain’t got the time or resources for prisoners who are not goin’ to take prison seriously. That boy was told many times how to put his utensils away. Good riddance.” Clemens was shocked at the early

dismissal, but quickly landed a job as the shift leader at Waffle House #64 across from Waffle House #29 on Main. He will also be taking a few theatre classes at the local community college. Warden Blake O’Donnell, no relation to Rosie O’Donnell, even though both are married to very heavy-set white women, had no hard feelings about Clemens’ release and plans on attending one of his plays if he performs within his county.

Louie Anderson, two-time Emmy award winner with a “clean” and self-deprecating brand of humor will perform at Wild Horse Pass & Casino’s Ovations Showroom on Saturday, June 12. Recognized as one of Comedy Central’s top 100 Greatest Stand-Up Comedians of All Time, Anderson has had his own comedy specials on HBO and Showtime, experienced success in television and movie roles and taken a turn as a best-selling author. Tickets are $25.00 - $55.00 and can be purchased online at www.wingilariver. com by phone at 877.840.0457. A $10 discount is available for attendees with a free Player’s Club card.

MOUNT RIGHTEOUS HEADED BACK TO PHOENIX 9-Piece ‘Anti-Orchestra’ Live at Trunk Space April 25, 2010 Mount Righteous, the 9-piece ‘antiorchestra’ from Grapevine, Texas, are coming back to Phoenix. They will be playing at Trunk Space on April 25, 2010 with Hello The Mind Control and Haymarket Squares. unconsciously, do everything in their power to avoid offending anyone or drawing any kind of reaction whatsoever. Mount Righteous is not that kind of band.” Splice Today: “Loud as hell, but good loud. Visceral loud. Like I could hear them pounding the skin on their palms as they all clapped. Like I could hear them sweating. It’s the kind of loud that hurts but makes you lean closer.” Stereokill.net: “Whether it’s to your taste or not, their peculiar brand of big, loud, twee, selfconsciously cute, indie-popcollides-with-marching-band music is a unique experience in an industry that’s becoming frustratingly homogenized. As such, it deserves to be played loudly and often.” Featuring mostly acoustic instrumentation, Mount Righteous have been known to perform without the use of amplifiers or microphones, relying on the thunderous rumble of sousaphone, trombone, trumpet, and

marching drums, the melodic intricacy of piccolo, melodica, bells, and guitar, and the power of 8 harmonized voices lifted in jubilant abandon. Mount Righteous has performed extensively across the United States. They have shared stages with the likes of The Octopus Project, David Dondero, The Gourds, the pAper chAse, Danielson, Cryptasize, Mucca Pazza, Baby Dee, and many others. Their debut album, “When The Music Starts”, was produced by renowned engineer John Congleton (Polyphonic Spree, St. Vincent, pAper chAse), and has been hailed as “One of the year’s most impressive freshman efforts…” (Fort Worth Star-Telegram), and awarded trophy for “Big Album” by quickDFW Magazine in 2009. In their home community of Dallas/Fort Worth, they have been nominated for multiple awards including Best Album in the Fort Worth Weekly, Best New Band in the Dallas Observer, Next Big Thing, and Big Song in QuickDFW magazine. In September of 2009 they released their first EP “Open Your Mouth” to keep their national fanbase happy until their sophomore album was released on April 3, 2010.

Sponsored by The Platinum Room STARS OF THE 70’s & 80’s VISIT THE VALLEY!

70’s stars, The Bay City Rollers and 80’s stars, Wang Chung will be enjoying the heat here in the valley this summer. The Bay City Rollers inspired a generation a female teenagers to change their dress habits. Clad in tartan uniforms, they eventually inspired a genuine outbreak of teenage frenzy reminiscent of Beatlemania. Rollermania spread from the U.K. to the U.S. in early 1976 with the group’s first stateside concerts and the 1975 #1 single, “Saturday Night.” - the group had two other top 10 singles and an additional five that made the U.S. top 60. The group was even more successful in the United Kingdom, with a pair of No. 1 singles and 11 that reached the top 10. “You couldn’t understand it the hysteria among the fans” Mitchell said. “It was just total madness, total insanity. You’ve never seen anything like it. It was literally impossible for us to walk down the street. Thirtytwo years later, appearances are dramatically different. “It’s a lot more relaxed,” Mitchell said. “It’s not so frantic. I’ve got nothing to prove to anybody. We’re playing the hits and they like to hear them. Mitchell’s Rollers are a six-piece band - two guitars (including Mitchell), a bass, keyboards, drums, a singer “It’s very good,” said Mitchell, who continues to tour in the United States, Canada,

Japan and Australia. “There are a lot of fans in their 40s who never got a chance to see the Rollers. So it’s all just good fun. Wang Chung came out of the post punk, New Wave scene in the UK and over their career released 5 albums and 2 Greatest Hits, selling millions of records around the world, achieving 6 US Top 40 hits, a number 1 and in the process becoming part of the contemporary culture of North America. Their huge smash Everybody Have Fun Tonight, with it’s line ‘Everybody Wang Chung tonight’, even became a saying in the States .. . . ‘to Wang Chung’ meaning to have fun. Such notables as Homer Simpson and Frazier namechecked the band on TV and ‘Wang Chung’ even achieved punchline status in the Austin Powers, The Spy Who Shagged Me movie. In June 2005, Hues and Feldman reunited as Wang Chung on the reality TV series on ABC, Hit Me Baby One More Time, performing ‘Everybody Have Fun Tonight’ and a cover of ‘Hot in Herre’ by Nelly. In the middle of 2009, Wang Chung were a part of the Regeneration 80’s tour along with ABC, Berlin, Cutting Crew, and Heaven 17. They are also about to release an album of new material entitled ‘Abducted By The 80’s’. Don’t miss Wang Chung and The Bay City Rollers in The Platinum Room at Skye.

Their Last Suppers author, “The History Chef,” returns to Cave Creek Vino 100 hosts historic-food tasting and wine pairing presentation On Saturday April 30, 5-9 p.m. Vino 100 in Cave Creek is hosting a winetasting paired with foods that were served to guests during the last dinner served aboard the Titanic in 1912. Author of Their Last Suppers, Andrew Caldwell, known worldwide as “The History Chef,” has selected this store as one of only a handful to host a book-signing/tasting event along his nationwide encore tour. “The Titanic may be history, but we’ve got the menu and the wine to keep the excitement of that era alive,” said Vino 100 co-owner, Laura McCormack. “As a historian and a chef, Andrew will take us back in time, with stories about the Titanic and its captain, along with the food and wine the passengers enjoyed during their last night onboard.” Event format and registration

The evening will include wine tastings paired with food samplings from the Titanic’s last dinner menu, including Oysters à la Russe, a garden salad and Chocolate Painted Éclairs. “Boarding passes,” which include the food and wine tastings, are available for $20 at 480-502-8466 or www. vino100phoenix.com. Pre-registration by April 28 is recommended. Attendees will be offered signed copies of Their Last Suppers at the event for the discounted price of $15 (retail $19.95). “It’s going to be a fun night,” said McCormack. “With Andrew at the helm, we’ll learn a little and laugh a lot!” Vino 100 Vino 100 is located at the Tuscany Village Center, 30835 N. Cave Creek Rd., just one-half mile north of Tatum Boulevard in Cave Creek. Store hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Wednesdays; 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Weekly tastings are held 5 to 7 p.m. Thursdays and 3 to 5 p.m. Saturdays. More information about Vino 100 and its events is available at 480-502-8466 or online at www.vino100phoenix.com.
