MIM will celebrate the diversity of world musical cultures through audio and video enabled exhibitions and concerts in its 299-seat Music Theater. A $250-million project, MIM opens in a 190,000-square-foot building with two floors of spacious, light-filled galleries featuring instruments, artifacts, costumes, recordings and videos from every corner of the globe, as well as an Artist Gallery featuring instruments linked to world-renowned musicians including John Lennon, Carlos Santana, Paul Simon, Eric Clapton, George Benson and more. The Collection The instruments in MIM’s collection,
6
representing every country in the world, were selected for fine construction, the reputation of their makers, special provenance, or connections to famous performers. In addition to acquiring objects through purchase and gifts, MIM’s curatorial staff has traveled extensively to collect instruments and artifacts that convey the diversity of cultures and global musical practices. To date, MIM has collected more than 12,000 instruments and objects, and plans to display 3,000 items at the grand opening. “Building this collection isn’t just a curatorial mission, it’s an adventure,” said MIM President and Director Bill DeWalt. “Our curatorial team has literally searched the world to collect diverse instruments that will spark the imagination of our guests, demonstrating the breadth of our musical heritage.” MIM’s vast collection will be highlighted in Geo-Galleries that focus on five global regions, as well as in a special Artist Gallery that features noteworthy instruments played by many of the world’s leading musicians. Visit www.themim.org for more information. 4725 East Mayo Boulevard, Phoenix, AZ MIM is located in North Phoenix at the southwest corner of Mayo and Tatum Boulevards, south of AZ Loop 101.

THE SECOND CITY DOES ARIZONA, OR CLOSE BUT NO SAGUARO From sagebrush to Sheriff Joe, from Green Valley to Kokopelli - it’s time to batten down the barrel cactus because The Second City is on their way to the Grand Canyon State to do a no-holds-barred world premiere comedy revue all about Arizona. THE SECOND CITY DOES ARIZONA is an original revue of comic sketches and songs aimed at skewering everything and everyone that is unique, ridiculous and wonderful about the land of rising temperatures and falling real estate. The Second City Does Arizona plays in Phoenix at the Herberger Theater Center from April 29 through May 16. Following an intensive tour (fueled by refried beans and Sonoran hot dogs) of greater Phoenix, lesser Tucson and points in between (including the Ostrich Ranch at Picacho Peak), writers from The Second City (closely monitored by photo radar)
are creating a show just for Arizona Theatre Company. The writers have assured us that they found plenty of targets-uh, material- to keep Arizona audiences in stitches. Famous for their hilarious sketch comedy and for equally famous alumni like Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Bill Murray, John Belushi, Gilda Radner and a whole slew of others, The Second City’s troupe of expert Chicago comedians have created a topical revue about the special challenges of the high life in the low desert. And as we like to say here in the Southwest: “It’s a dry wit.” Tickets start at $26, depending on date and section choice and are available at www.arizonatheatre. org or by calling the box office at (602) 256-6995. House Seats are available for select performances. Call for details.

Warthogs originate in sub-Sahara Africa and are named for their sizable facial warts. These fleshy growths are much more pronounced on the males because they serve as a protective padding during sparring matches with other males. The species likes to dig in the soil for food and shelter. Like other pigs, warthogs have sturdy snouts made from a ring of cartilage that is supported by a small bone not present in other mammals. This allows them to use their snout like a “bulldozer” while foraging for food. Plus, like no other species of pig, the warthog is specially adapted for grazing. It kneels on unique wrist pads to feed on grasses and roots. Several spring month old warthogs are on display in the Wildlife World Baby Animal Nursery.

Nick@ Night By Nick Connell PHANTOM at Arizona Broadway Theatre in Peoria. The PHANTOM returned to the valley this weekend in a magnificent production directed by Mace Archer at the Arizona Broadway Theatre in Peoria. This is the Yeston-Kopit version that has become a regional hit across the country. This production, also based on the story by Gaston Lewis, is the story of Erik, an orphan, who is raised in the catacombs under the Paris Opera House. Erik is a scared and tormented young man who lives for the beautiful music he hears and sings in the shadows of privileged Paris. But fate has conspired to bring him together with a beautiful young singer who is the image and voice of his fallen mother. This is a lyrical and emotional musical that will melt even the coldest of hearts to the fires of love. Making this love grow and flower in miraculous form are two great singers who give everything making this a hit show! Starring as the star crossed lovers are Kiel Klaphake as the Phantom, and Jeannie Shubitz as Christine. The chemistry of these two is pure music from Overture to Finale, and until the Phantom’s identity is disclosed in a heart wrenching scene played superbly by James Rio, who is the Phantom’s true father. There is so much to like about this production. A grand set design, beautiful costume designs, a strong ensemble of voices and characters, a wonderful menu, and of course the music! Catch this Phantom before he’s gone in the fog of Paris. Through May 30.Tickets 623-776-8400 AzBroadwayTheatre.com MIM MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MUSEUM in North Phoenix Tatum&101 There is an incredible experience waiting to be shared for all valley residents as the Musical Instrument Museum opened this past weekend in North Phoenix just south of the Tatum and the 101 exit. This museum, the vision of founder Robert Ulrich and Director Bill DeWalt, is an enormous undertaking that is stimulating and exciting. If “music is the language of the soul”, then MIM is the new home of many musical languages. This is the worlds first Global musical instrument museum with over 190,000 square feet on two floors. This is an interactive experience that can be shared with the entire family no matter what your age. The joy and harmony that were shared on opening weekend were a gift from heaven! The Experience Gallery was a personal favorite and concerts will be held weekly at the state of the art Musical Theater on site. Tell a friend that MIM is open and ready to share the music of the world. Make sure you have plenty of time to explore. There’s a “river’ of melodies for the soul and spirit to enjoy and experience! “Furry Vengeance”, a lighthearted message on saving the ecology! Review by Stan Robinson
Don’t let the ‘foreign language’ aspect of “The Secret in Their Eyes”; keep you from an engaging and powerful mystery! It’s in Spanish with English subtitles. “A Christmas Carol”, the Charles Dickens classic story of Scrooge, has had over 60 movies or made for TV adaptations, starting with the first in 1938!

The story, set in 1999, unfolds in a series of flashbacks starting in June of 1974. Federal justice agent Benjamín Espósito (Ricardo Darín) in Argentina has serious doubts during the investigation of a young woman who’s brutally raped and murdered in her home in a Buenos Aires neighborhood. His assistant is a ‘closet’ alcoholic who simply wants to have the case end so that his life can go back to the simple every day pace of police work. His assistant sees an easy way to put the case to rest when a newcomer and upper class lawyer takes over as department head. Two immigrant workers seem the likely suspects on the surface, and the assistant playing on the naïveté of the new chief, puts the matter to rest with the workers being charged. And that’s how it sets, for twenty-five years, until Espósito retires. The case has haunted Espósito throughout the years and in retirement he decides to write a book on the case. It’s an entertaining light-hearted movie with the overall theme of co-existence as the theme. “It Came From Kuchar”… the Director, Not a Distant Planet
By Randy Montgomery George Kuchar has made over 200 films, many with his twin brother Mike. Whether they are paternal or fraternal is still up for debate. They claim they do not know themselves. Despite a long list of credits on IMDB, more than likely, you have never seen any of them. Wikipedia says their films are “‘low-fi’ aesthetic, playful use of no-talent actors,” and have “plotless” plots, and theme-less themes.” The brothers; George and Mike began making films in the mid 1950’s and have not stopped since. The new indie documentary It Came From Kuchar screened to rave reviews at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin and introduces uninformed audiences to the work of these two gentlemen. With works such as The Wet Destruction
Freddy’s Coming For You… A Nightmare on Elm Street Reimagined When you think horror films; three names come to mind; Michael Meyers, Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger. Freddy doesn’t win the battle of how many sequels can be made in a franchise, but he is definitely one of the undisputed champs. In 1984, moviegoers were introduced to the psychopath that haunted teenagers in their dreams. “One, two, Freddy’s coming for you…” Yeah, when Freddy appears in your dreams, it’s almost certain that you will die in real life. The premise is the brainchild of Wes Craven and starred Robert Englund. Craven celebrated the film’s 10 Year Anniversary with Wes Craven’s New Nightmare in 1994. Sixteen years later, Producer Michael Bay and Director Samuel Bayer bring the notorious killer back to theatres in a re-imagined form. A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) was not screened in time for review. The trailer looks promising. Let’s hope Bayer and Bay do not do to Freddy what Rob Zombie did to Michael S N Meyers. A P I T

McDuffys Grille Chandler opened its doors in October 2007, at the NW corner of Pecos & McQueen. Located just a mile north of the San Tan Loop 202 Freeway McQueen exit, it is easily accessible to everyone living in the SE valley “202 Corridor” area. The Proprietor, Scott Adams, and managers Nickole Swindle and Joe Merenda all worked at the re-known McDuffys Sportsbar in Tempe. They are quick to point out this new incarnation is a more laid back, food oriented hang out, with a slogan of “Eat, Drink, & Relax”, and offer guests a variety of options for doing just that. For the ‘Food’, the offering is fairly extensive. Appetizers range from traditional sports bar finger fare such as delicious Buffalo Wings, Handmade Onion Rings & Hand Cut French Fries, and BBQ Sliders; to Southwest favorites like Baja Shrimp Martinis, Mini-Chimis, Hand Rolled Taquitos, & Calamari. There is a large selection of fresh salads and the ‘Best Burgers in Town’ that can be cooked to order. The Blue Cheese Burger served with gorgonzola bleu cheese and whiskey carmelized onions has quite the following. There are also popular sandwiches like the Famous Grilled Clubhouse & Pastrami Hoagie and Tailgate favorites such as the Pecos Mac’n Cheese dinner, Teriyaki Steak Skewers, and the Chipotle BBQ Chicken, which is served with Honey cured bacon, sharp cheddar cheese and chipotle BBQ sauce. Rounding out the menu are Fish Tacos made fresh to order from seasoned Tilapia and Tacos with seasoned chicken, shredded beef, or geen chili pork among some other southwest favorites. Children’s coloring menus and meals are available for the kids.
Brunch is served every Saturday and Sunday till 2:30pm with traditional and unique egg dishes, $3 Homemade Bloody Marys, also Champagne cocktails & San Gria. Specially priced Happy Hour appetizers are available Monday through Saturday 3 to 7pm and there is a budget conscious Lunch Menu for those on the go Monday through Friday till 3pm. Daily features and chef specials are always being created and put on the entry board daily. One of the things McDuffy’s Grille guests love is the kitchen staying open till midnight Thursday through Saturday nights, so they can get good food and their favorite beverages after the other activities in their busy lives. In Addition to Satellite sports programming, and OTB Horse Racing, McDuffys Grille offers many activities and specials on a regular calendar as well: ● Saturday: & Sunday Brunch till 2:30pm ● Monday: $3 House Margaritas all day with $5.99 Taco Dinners ● Tuesday: Kids Eat Free & $4 Mojitos & Long Island Teas ● Wednesday: All U Can Eat Pasta $7.99 & $3.50 Three Olives drinks ● Thursday: Bike Night & Burger Madness with $5.99 Burger & FF, Free Texas Hold’em 7:30pm & 10:30pm, Bike Night specials throughout the year. ● Friday & Sunday: Fish Fry $7.39 ½ pound Hand Beer Battered Cod, FF, & Slaw ● Saturday Night: Guest Emcee 10pm to close with $2 Kamis & Vodka Energy Drinks

The Manic Organic So, did you watch any of that Food Inc. documentary last week? It was on PBS and I took some notes. Here are some good one-liners: - transparency is the new organic - know what’s in your food - the real farmer will deliver - grown local, shop local - integrity and accountability matter - cheap food equals bad calories (usually) - but...organic does not have to cost more That last line about cost - a critical item that can certainly be argued but I say the more we eat organic the less the food will cost, now or in the future. So let’s all begin that path to healthy eating. - MO

BASEBALL’S BEST MLB’S CURRENT TOP FIVE
Philadelphia Phillies
With Raul Ibanez off to a slow start, the Phillies lineup -- though potent at the top -- isn’t very long. Ibanez’s on-base percentage is reasonable (.339), but he’s not hitting (.196 average) and thus not driving in many runs (six). The dropoff in production is significant, as the top three slot in the Phillies’ lineup have all scored 15 runs each, while their sixth through eighth hitters have scored 15 runs total.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL POWER RANKINGS
opponents. Says starter Matt Garza, “Some of the best advice I ever got was from a veteran ballplayer, Shannon Stewart, who said, ‘If you want to know if you belong in the major leagues, play in the AL East because that’s where the show’s at.’ Three years here and I still haven’t caught him lying.” The Rays more than belong: They dominated that divisional stretch with a 10-3 record, including a four-game sweep in Boston, which vaults them over the Twins.
Dominant starting pitching carries Yankees to No. 1 spot Regression to the mean was a key theme, as several teams with solid starts (Diamondbacks, Giants, Rangers, Reds) fell back to the pack, while several clubs who started more slowly (Angels, Mariners, Padres) played themselves into prime spots. More than two-thirds of the teams (22 of 30) have between six and nine wins, including 14 of the 16 NL clubs. That doesn’t help poor Baltimore, which is starving for a win at 2-14, but at the top of the rankings five teams have clearly distinguished themselves as baseball’s best. The recent work of the Yankees’ rotation -- including Wednesday night’s outing by Phil Hughes in which he took a nohitter into the eighth -- gives them the top spot. (All stats and standings current through April 21.)
Minnesota Twins New York Yankees
The dominant starting pitching is starting to prove its worth: The Yankees recently won five straight games – one full lap of the rotation -- without allowing more than three runs in any of them and with the starter earning the win in each. Bonus fact: New York is the only majorleague team not to play a game decided by one run this season, which essentially wastes the effectiveness of closer Mariano Rivera.
Smart move (so far) not to move Francisco Liriano to the bullpen: The left-hander is recapturing some of the unhittable stuff during his 2006 rookie season. Capped by eight scoreless innings on Wednesday, Liriano has thrown 21 innings in three starts had gone 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA and 17 strikeouts. Without him pitching to this high level, the Twins appeared to have a five-man rotation full of guys with third-starter talent. With Liriano at his best, suddenly that staff is a lot more fierce with a 1-3-33-3 lineup.
Tampa Bay Rays
St. Louis Cardinals
Tony La Russa made several curious managerial decisions from Saturday’s 20-inning marathon -- doubleswitching Matt Holliday out of the lineup, calling a hit-and-run with Albert Pujols batting, using pitcher Kyle Lohse in left field and putting position players on the mound -- and admitted the next day that he would have used pitcher-turned-outfielder Rick Ankiel, had he still been on the team. It’s hard not to feel cheated out of the drama of that moment, as it likely would have gone one of two ways: exceptionally well or disastrously wrong.
The Rays were dealt a difficult earlyseason schedule, with their first 13 games against fellow AL East AZWeeklyMagazine.com

BEER! Cinco de Mayo By Chuck Noll
First off, are we all clear that Cinco de Mayo is not the Mexican Independence Day? Okay, great. That day is celebrated on September 16th and commemorates the call for separation from Spanish Rule. Cinco de Mayo is more of a regional event commemorating the Mexican army’s upset victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 15, 1862. The holiday is fairly minor in most of Mexico, with the obvious exception of Puebla. It isn’t even considered an obligatory federal holiday, just a voluntary one.

So, how did Cinco (we are on a first name basis) become such a big deal in the USA? For whatever reason, the Mexican community in California celebrated the victory starting in 1863 and the observance has pretty much been continuous ever since. Like many trends, Cinco celebrations spread from California to other states and developed in to a cultural celebration, much like St. Patrick’s Day, Chinese New Year and Oktoberfest have become in this country. Communities with larger Mexican populations embraced the day more than others, which explains why Arizona has embraced the day so strongly. It does not, however, explain why Birmingham Alabama, which has a Mexican population so small it is included in the category “other ethnic groups”, makes such a big deal out of the day.

We’ve gone two paragraphs without once mentioning beer, well that’s about to change. Because Mexican beer has become such a big part of our culture, it’s only natural that these beers take center stage for Cinco. There are some domestic beers produced in an effort to replicate Mexican styles, but why drink a pretender when you can have the real thing? There are two major Mexican brewing companies, Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma and Grupo Modelo. The latter, as you might suspect, are responsible for the two Modelo beers, Especial and Negra. The Especial is a tasty pale lager produced in the style of most Mexican beers. Negra Modelo is thought by most Americans to be the best of the beers from south of the border. It is a dark Vienna Lager style beer brewed in the German tradition. It has a little more body and
flavor than most Mexican beers, so it brings a different drinking experience. Modelo also makes Pacifico and a small brand called Corona. Corona is a phenomenon unto itself. First produced in 1925, it has become the number one Mexican beer in the world. It is also one of the top ten selling beers of any kind. Available in bottles only because they feel that “the best taste experience and maximum enjoyment comes from the glass bottle”, they have foregone a draft product. There are also some beers made by Modelo that are available only in Mexico, Victoria and León come to mind. Keep an eye out for these if you are vacationing in Mexico. Moctezuma has the other well known Mexican beers, the most popular of which are the Dos Equis brands. The Special Continued on Page 31...
Lager is a Mexican style Pale Lager and Amber is a Vienna Lager, a little different than the Negra Modelo, but the same basic style. However the original beer from this brewery was Carta Blanca which was taken from the French, “Carte Blanche”, meaning blank check. Other beers from this brewery include Sol, Tecate and Bohemia. Bohemia is a European style pilsner brewed in the Czech tradition. Tecate is sometimes credited with starting the habit of putting a lime in Mexican beers. It seems they had a brewmaster of Scottish descent and adopted the tradition from Great Britain of providing sailors a lime with their daily beer ration to help prevent scurvy. And, we would be remiss if we didn’t remind you that Dos Equis does employ, The Most Interesting Man in the World. Stay thirsty, my friends! Where do you find all these beers on Cinco? Well just about any Mexican restaurant is going to have something going on, but some of the bigger events will be taking place at the Sandbars in Scottsdale, Peoria and Chandler; Barrio Cantina, Eva’s in Casa Grande, Arribas, Dos Gringos and Macayo’s. You can also look for fun times at Salty Senorita, Valle Luna, Top Shelf and Fuego Bar and Grill in Tolleson. Devil’s Advocate in Tempe and Kiley’s Grill in Chandler will also have events. Much like St. Patrick’s Day, many of these events start as early as noon and will be in full
stride as the work day ends. Get there early as there may be lines at many locations later in the evening.
BEER! SECTION
... continued from Page 30
Cinco is celebrated at more than just Mexican places. Cody’s in Cave Creek is planning a major event and is putting together what they say is the world’s largest piñata. If you have been looking for an excuse to get to Cave Creek, this could be it. Mill Street in Tempe will host several events at non-Mexican bars as well. Most of the time, this column is about craft beers, but Cinco is one of those holidays that demand a break from tradition. If you’re a craft beer drinker, just embrace the spirit for one day, and enjoy a Corona or Tecate. If you have to have a craft beer, then there is only one choice. The only Mexican craft brewery available in Arizona is Cucapa which comes from Mexicali. With several flavors including the Chupacabras Pale Ale, named after the mythical, or not so mythical, Goat Sucker, a Yeti like beast that is blamed for livestock deaths across the Americas. You can find Cucapa at the Yard House, Blanco Tacos and Tequila, Old Chicago Mesa, and Los Sombreros to name a few. Enjoy Cinco de Mayo, responsibly of course, and relax with some enjoyable Mexican beer. Don’t worry about what food you are pairing it with. Cinco is about friends and fun, and celebrating the Mexican culture. At least that’s my plan.

Normism Of The Week
A Sad Poem… He grabbed me around my slender neck I could not call or scream. He dragged me to my dingy room Where we could not be seen. He tore away my flimsy wrap And gazed upon my form. I was so cold and damp and scared While he was dry and warm. He pressed his feverish lips to mine I could not make him stop. He drained me of my inner self I gave him every drop. Then he cast me from his side So now you see me here. An empty bottle thrown away That once was full of beer.
Coach: A little early in the day for a beer, isn’t it Norm? Norm: So float a corn flake in it.

A man walks out of a bar and sees a bum panhandling on the corner. And the bum says, "Mister, can you spare a dollar?"
The man then asks the bum, "If I give you a dollar are you going to use it to gamble?" "No, says the bum."
The man asks the bum, "If I give you a dollar, are you going to use it to buy Beer?" "No, says the bum."
So the man says to the bum, "Do you mind coming home with me so I can show my wife what happens to someone who doesn't drink Beer or gamble?"

Big Brew 2010 Saturday, May 1st will celebrate National Homebrew Day with the Big Brew!! Since being announced before Congress in 1988, the first Saturday in May has been dedicated to the craft of homebrew. Big Brew was created by the American Homebrewers Association to celebrate this annual event. Since landing at Plymouth Rock, Americans have been passionately homebrewing and sharing it with others. Today, there are an estimated 750,000 homebrewers in the US. Big Brew has become a world-wide event, celebrated on 6 continents in 2009. It’s all about home brewers getting together to share their love of beer! Here in Phoenix, the event will be sponsored by ASH (AZ Society of Homebrewers) who will provide free food and beverages. It will be hosted by Brewers Connection who will be providing Brewers Water and Ice and offering 10% discounts on all ingredients (for participants) as well as 10% off Beginner Brewer equipment kits. Located at 1425 E University Dr, Tempe. If you are not able to attend, be sure to raise a glass at 12NOON (Central Time) for a collective toast to honor these craftsmen.

Two Irish lads had been out shacking up with their girl friends. One felt guilty and decided he should stop at the church and confess. He went into the confession booth and told the Father, “Father, I have sinned with a lady. Please forgive me.” The Father said, “Tell me who the lady was.” The lad said he couldn’t do that and the Father said he couldn’t grant him forgiveness unless he did. “Was it Mollie O’Grady ?” asked the Father. “No.” “Was it Rosie Kelly?” “No.” “Was it that red-headed wench Tessie O’Malley?” “No.” “Well then,” said the Father, “You’ll not be forgiven.” When the lad met his friend outside the friend asked, “So, did you find forgiveness.” “No,” said the other, “but I picked up three good prospects!”

Cinco de Mayo is upon us and luckily we live in Arizona, because let me just say that a Cinco de Mayo celebrated in Kentucky would just be filled with the same old chicken. But being border with Mexico gives us a chance to go almost anywhere and be able to find a mustached sombrero man - and really, who can ask for anything more. The Sandbar May 1st, 2nd and 5th

The Sandbar still holds its place among party cantinas and “Cinco de Sandbar,” is a clue as to why. The celebration starts on the 1st and continues on to the 5th! The day has finally come when you can show off your gym obsession because Saturday will be host to a Strong-Man Contest, so don’t embarrass yourself or your friends will disown you. Both the Scottsdale and Chandler locations will be holding another infamous Dodge ball Tournament in its sand-filled parking lot. This is the real deal; we’re talking a $1000 grand prize! Which makes the saying “it’s not about winning it’s how you play the game,” not worth its salt. Wednesday will be host to live music from Island Magic Steel Drum Band, drink specials and a party atmosphere. The Chandler location will be doing something a bit, um, different… think Chihuahua races and taco eating contests, cause the two go hand-in-hand so nicely. 480.998.8845 Scottsdale Location Devil’s Advocate Bar & Grill Wed May 5th Devil’s Advocate is giving the Mexican bars a run for their money with their Cinco de Mayo. What got my attention at first was hearing the Crash Kings are headlining! You may have heard their hit new song “Mountain Man,” with the chorus of “I’m sipping on some
sunshine…”being played on 103.9 on repeat for one and one reason onlycause its awesome. Jason Devore of Authority Zero will be joining them as well as Jon Foreman of Switchfoot who will be playing some acoustic. The Dry River Yacht Club will also be performing - and let me say that I was taken back by the first song I heard off their Myspace. It was like a mysterious, catchy, hot gypsy sounding mess - and I was into it. Not a bad line up right? Now go ahead and add a dunk tank, a mechanical bull, drink specials, and you get happiness. 480.921.2585 Tempe
Salty Senorita Wed May 5th Salty’s will be throwing “Circo de Mayo,” a carnival themed party. Be prepared for a re-vamped sound stage, island bars, outdoor grills and 10,000 sq feet of party space expanded onto the parking lot. Trailer Park will be kicking off the music followed by one of LA’s favorite cover bands, The Spazzmatics. A cool perk is that Salty’s in North Scottsdale will be providing a free shuttle service up to the Old Town location so you can catch the show! I feel like this kind gesture may turn into a party bus extravaganza - I hope so anyway. 480.946.SALTY Scottsdale Location

STUDENT GIVEN MATCHES AFTER HER LIGHTER BREAKS*
Fatteville, New York - Twelve year old, Missy Mackenzie was on a smoke break at Eagle Hill Elementary in when the Hello Kitty lighter she received for perfect attendance last year, stopped working. Luckily for Ms. Mackenzie, Eagle Hill’s Home Economic teacher, Ms. Wassler, whom she took the smoke break with, had a spare book of matches in her purse. She gave Missy the matches so she could finish the pack of cigarettes she

had started earlier in the morning. Unknown to both teacher and student, a policy was violated.
Principal Phil Phitzer was quoted as saying, “We cannot tolerate the behavior of Ms. Wassler or any teacher who is going to give a child matches. We, in the district feel, if a child’s lighter fails to work, it is the responsibility of the child, not staff, to get that issue resolved.”
AZWeeklyMagazine.com
Ms. Wassler was put on a two day suspension and will not be involved in the Teacher’s ‘Strippin for Diabetes’ fundraiser at the end of the year. Missy Mackenzie has decided to stop smoking until she is fifteen and her father will be moving into the family’s spare bedroom until her mom’s Cabana Boy fetish is over. *This fact may be made up or wrong.

Ready to laugh like you’ve never laughed before? Simply attend a JesterZ Improvisational Comedy Show on Friday or Saturday evenings at either 8 or 10pm. The show consists only of 5 players, but they possessed the talent of 168 comedians. Jef Rawls, owner of Theater 168 directed Matt, Klor, Jessica, Preston and Camille with the help of audience suggestions, to create the funniest 90 minutes of clean yet sophisticated humor that is made-up on the spot and in the moment. The beauty of this show is that you can bring your grandmother or twelve year old son or daughter and not have to worry about the F word being dropped or sit through cheap, childish jokes. These comedians are funny, talented and professional with a wit and creativity that is second to none. I recommend making reservations because their shows sell-out very quickly. For more information go to www.JezterZimprov.com or call 480423-0120.

Grammy-nominated hard rock band Disturbed are in the studio putting the finishing touches on a new album, entitled Asylum. The release is the follow-up to their 2008 platinum album Indestructible, which spawned the Active Rock smash single “Inside the Fire.” Asylum will be released by Reprise Records in late summer. As with Indestructible, Disturbed are self-producing Asylum, which they began writing in September 2009 and recording in February of this year. Front man David Draiman describes it as “still identifiably Disturbed, but showing more maturation. We feel this is one of the strongest bodies of work we’ve ever put together. It definitely goes in familiar areas, but with new levels of precision and skill.” Lyrically, Draiman says, the themes “range from very personal and introspective, to the political and provocative. What would you expect? No songs about puppy dogs or rainbows here.” “We want this record to be a shining example of how the years have made

us stronger,” Draiman says. “We want it to be an album that helps people get through their own trials and tribulations, as always.” Formed in Chicago in 1996, Disturbed have sold 11 million albums and six million digital tracks worldwide, and have scored eight No. 1 singles at Active Rock radio over the course of their career. Indestructible debuted at Number One on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart in June 2008 and remained in the Top 10 for five weeks. It was the band’s third consecutive Number One album, following their platinum-sellers Believe (2002) and Ten Thousand Fists (2005), making Disturbed one of only six rock bands in history to score three consecutive Number One debuts with studio albums. Disturbed is Draiman, guitarist Dan Donegan, drummer Mike Wengren, and bassist John Moyer. For more on the band, including news about the “Decade of Disturbed,” please visit www.disturbed1.com.
One lucky “All Access” winner will meet rockabilly blues star Chris Isaak the night of his show slated for September 23rd at Celebrity Theatre. Singer-songwriter-guitarist Chris Isaak is well known for taking classic rockabilly and country tunes, and making them his own, resulting in a stylized take on ‘50s and ‘60s rock & roll. Hit songs such as “Wicked Game” and “Baby Did a Bad, Bad Thing” brought rockabilly blues back to pop-rock. His most recent album Mr. Lucky continues to expand on Isaak’s favorite subjects: love and heartbreak. The artist explains on his website: “I believe that anyone who’s ever fallen in love—or out of love— should be able to hear themselves in this album too.” With matinee idol looks and a sly, selfdeprecating wit, Isaak has enjoyed a second life on screen, appearing in the films Married To The Mob, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, Silence Of The Lambs, and That Thing You Do!, plus the hit TV show Friends, the HBO miniseries From The Earth To The Moon, and his own acclaimed Showtime series The Chris Isaak Show (2001-2004). He currently hosts The Chris Isaak Hour, a music interview series on the Biography Channel. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; show starts at 8 p.m. Free Parking! Celebrity Theatre is conveniently located on 32nd St., just 4 blocks south of the Loop 202 freeway, in Phoenix. Concert tickets ($45, $65, $75) go on sale at 10 a.m. Monday, April 26th at Celebrity Theatre or online at www. celebritytheatre.com. To charge by phone, call 602-267-1600 ext.1. All tickets are subject to a surcharge. Special guest Marc Broussard opens show at 8 p.m.

Gabriel of Urantia encourages everyone to ‘Be Aware’ of such things as: • The need for more green products and to live more sustainably. • The need to buy locally and to grow organic gardens. • The chemicals and toxins in many foods, manufactured by greedy, uncaring companies. • The unethical corporate entities taking people’s money and keeping them in slave labor. • The unequal distribution of wealth, supplies, and material goods, keeping the poor fighting among themselves. • The lack of proper health care and the high costs of medical services. • The

Sponsored by The Platinum Room THE LEGENDARY JACK JONES TO PERFORM AT SKYE With a disarming smile, an effortlessly engaging wit and a vocal style that stands alone, Jack Jones is one of the greatest singers ranking with the legendary Mel Tormé, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra and Vic Damone. A true Singers’ Singer. A double Grammy winner, Jack performs around the globe to sold-out audiences in venues ranging from Jazz clubs to the London Palladium. Whether he performs with his trio or full Symphony orchestra, his musical perfection and vocal passion unfailingly illustrate why he stands with the luminaries. From the thematic threads of his shows to his ability to make the largest halls intimate, Jack Jones is the very definition of a complete and total entertainer. The New York Times raves, “he is arguably the most technically accomplished male pop singer...”. There is only one Jack Jones. Jack’s commitment to his art has earned him two Grammy’s for “Best Pop Male Vocal Performance” with his singles “Lollipops and Roses” by Anthony Velona and Bacharach/David’s “Wives and Lovers”. His release, Jack Jones Paints A Tribute To Tony Bennett, was nominated for “Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance”. He was also nominated for “The Impossible Dream” and his recording of “Wives and Lovers” was nominated for “Record of the Year”. His hit records include “The Race Is On”, “Lady”, “Ca” Me Irresponsible”, and “What I Did For Love”.
On April 13, 1989, he was honored with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, close to where his father’s star is located. Frank Sinatra said, “Jack Jones is one of the major singers of our time,” and Mel Tormé called him “the greatest ‘pure’ singer in the world” With over 50 recorded albums (17 of them charting Billboard’s Top 20) and consistently sold-out world tours, Jack Jones continues to charm audiences with his wit, sensitivity and vocal power. In addition to a successful recording career, Jones’ impressive credits include film and television roles; an internationally syndicated TV variety show; guest performances at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the White House. He has also performed and later recorded popular theme songs for film and TV (“Love with a Proper Stranger”, “The Love Boat”). Today, Jack can be found performing concerts to sold-out audiences around the globe at performing arts centers, casinos, symphony halls and even intimate cabaret rooms like the intimacy of The Platinum Room at Skye!

The line from Chuck Berry’s Johnny B. Goode, “That little country boy could play” was originally written as, “That little colored boy can play.” Berry knew that in order to get the song played on the radio, he would have to change that lyric.

You are now ready to enjoy the many pleasures of a good cigar my dear. The smoke of a cigar should not be inhaled, but rather tasted like a fine cognac. Smoking a cigar should imply not chewing on it or holding it with your teeth. The tip of the stogie should remain dry for a better draw. Keep in mind all we have learned. It is recommended to smoke your first cigar on a full stomach and not to swallow too much of the tar filled saliva, which could cause stomach cramps. The secret is to keep the cigar at a slow burn in order to avoid tar build-up which makes the taste of the cigar too strong to enjoy. So get things going darling. Sit back, relax, unwind and enjoy…
