The Arabian oryx is one of several large antelope species from Africa on display at Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium. Once on the brink of extinction with just a few individuals remaining, there have been hundreds of Arabian oryx born in zoos, including Wildlife World, over the past 40 years. To date, it is one of the best examples of a conservation success story at a time when many more species are at risk. Some oryx have even been reintroduced into their native habitat in and around the Arabian Peninsula. Photo: Once on the brink of extinction, a young Arabian oryx is guarded by the adult herd.

By Nick Connell THE SECOND CITY DOES ARIZONA at Arizona Theatre Company, Phoenix There were no sacred cows left after the hilarious and comedic production of SECOND CITY DOES ARIZONA from the Arizona Theatre company at the Herberger Center in Phoenix this past weekend. This was a calculated risk given the history of Arizona politics and personalities, but the payoff was a non stop marathon of jokes and laughs worth every penny! This show was “perfect” from the start taking us where no news or print medium had gone before-or will since Tina Fey became Sarah Palin. There was the usual praise of Sherriff Joe and aliens, Senator John and the politicians, our beloved photo radar revealed, tourists and more tourists, Mexicans, Indians, Jews, Canadians, Gays, Javalina’s, Ostrich farms, government consultants , border patrols, spelling bees and even” rain from Spain”. Suffice to say, you will love this grilling of Arizona! It’s worth seeing again just for the improve portion of the show. Kudos to Director Matt Hovde and his brilliant cast from second city including Ryan Archibald, Amanda Blake Davis, Cody Dove, Lauren Dowden, Martin Garcia and Andel Sudik. And thanks for letting our friends over at Cox cable know how we really feel. Through May 16th for Tickets call 602-256-6899 or online at ArizonaTheatre.org. NO CHILD at Actors Theater in Phoenix There is a teaching artist in town presenting her one-woman show titled NO CHILD at the Herberger Center in Phoenix. Nilaja Sun, who has written and performed this award winning play for over five years, is stunning in her portrayal of the life and times of a teaching artist at the Malcolm X High School in the Bronx, New York. We get the sense that Nilaja has an incredible memory of the characters, teachers and students who framed her experience at this inner city high school while she taught drama. As revealed, we get to experience them up close and personal. From the school janitor, to Ms.Tam’s class of clowns, Nilaja has hit gold with the grit and personality these fragile souls carry. There’s so much levity from character to character, and scene to scene that this is a very special performance indeed. The fact that Nilaja was able to reach 27 kids and help them “shine” is testament to the beauty and brilliance of this great show! See it until May 9th. Tickets at 602-253-6701 or online at ActorsTheatrePhx.org.

CATWALK at Scorpius Dance Theatre in Phoenix Lisa Starry has been a bright influence in the dance scene in Phoenix for a long time. Her vision and creativity express what few can see or feel in the culture today. Her new production CATWALK is no different. Combining a multimedia approach to staging, incorporating clothing designers into the look and feel of her dance pieces, while using original music transitions and interludes for dance movements- Lisa has hit the mark again! The Runway Interlude series capturing the egos, vanity and beauty of the runway fashion industry were revealing and picturesque. But the shows highlights were in the dancer’s movements and emotions in A Better Tomorrow, Electric Barbarella, Hearing Damage, The Chauffeur, Beautiful People and Bolero. Catwalk is a dance presentation full of talent and color in every aspect of production. Catch this Scorpius Production through May 9th at the Phoenix Little Theatre. Tickets 602-254-2151. This documentary presents an interesting view of 4 infants being born into their respective environments, which are vastly different, and follows their growth for the first year of their lives. We, as well as they, view the defining aspects of different cultures in Africa, Mongolia, Japan and the United States. The babies are: Ponijao, who lives in Namibia (Africa) with her family, her parents and eight older brothers and sisters. Ponijao’s family is part of the Himba tribe, and lives in a small village with other families. Bayarjargal, usually called “Bayar” for short, was born in Mongolia, and lives with his mother, father, and older brother Delgerjargal (“Degi”) on their small family farm. Mari lives with her mother and father in Shibuya, a busy metropolitan area in Tokyo, at the center of all of the city’s noise and excitement. Mari is an only child and lives a contemporary urban lifestyle. AZWeeklyMagazine.com

And Hattie, who lives in San Francisco and born to very ecological, “green” parents. Both of Hattie’s parents are equally involved in her day-to-day life, fixing her meals, taking her to play groups, and spending time with her around the house. The documentary’s style doesn’t follow the traditional production techniques of a narrator’s track to explain aspects, the stirring music score to emotionally stimulate reaction from the viewer, or dynamic revelations to bring across the key points. What we experience in ‘Babies’ is the natural ambient sounds of the environments of each baby as they discover them. We see the babies’ reactions to elements of one culture that would certainly be a fear factor in others. What’s the most startling affirmation for this reviewer while watching ‘Babies’, how absolutely marvelous the instinctual element instilled in all of us as humankind, adaptability… “Babies”, directed by Thomas Balmès. Focus Features release. Rated PG for cultural and maternal nudity throughout.

Chosen for Universality and Environment By Randy Montgomery French documentary filmmaker Thomas Balmès directs what’s predicted to be Mother’s Day weekend’s biggest hit (other than the box-office powerhouse Iron Man). In Babies, Balmès introduces audiences to four youngsters in their first two years of life. The babies are as culturally diverse as their backdrops. Ponijao lives in Opuwo, Namibia and is part of the Himba tribe. Ponijao has numerous siblings, as does Bayar, who is growing up on a small family farm in Bayanchandmani, Mongolia. Experiencing life in a crowded apartment in a section of Tokyo, Japan is Mari. Closer to home; Hattie lives in San Francisco with her ecologically friendly parents. Choosing the babies was not an easy task explains Balmès, “The selection process took six months.” The four were chosen not only for their likability on screen, but partially based on geographic criteria as well. “The idea was to find something with the relationship with the environment. Every family is a sort of metaphor of their kind of environment.” Crafting the perfect film involved few actual “words.” “The film is being shot on the level of the babies,” says Balmès. “I felt it was the best way to see into their world and see the world through their eyes. With no narration and no dialogue, it created a closeness to the babies and dove into their world.” Selecting and shooting the babies get acclimated to their surroundings and experience life was the easy part, keeping the families engaged and not being too intrusive as a film crew

Now Playing! By Stan Robinson

“We had to make sure that these families didn’t change their mind during the shooting. We had to have a good relationship with them. At the end, they were all happy with the film. The invasion we made in their life was huge and I am thankful for them to allow us there.” As for the director himself, “It was two years of my life. (I had) to stay motivated, keep up with my family life.”

As we see in Babies, our environment, family make-up, country of birth and cultural background may differ wildly, but the way we grow and build who are, is truly universal.

“Iron Man 2” The next installment of Iron Man continues when a weapons manufacturer wants to provide competition for Tony Stark and his company when he enters a partnership with a Russian prisoner who has created his own ‘battle-suit’ in an effort to takedown Tony Stark and his new assistant, who has an alter-ego of her own. “Iron Man 2” starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke, Samuel L. Jackson, and Garry Shandling. Directed by Jon Favreau. Written by Justin Theroux. Paramount Pictures release. Rated PG-13 for sequences of intense sci-fi action and violence, and some language. S N Runtime: 124 A P minutes.

was Balmès biggest worry. The challenge, “not to be too disturbing, especially in Tokyo and America. The Japanese family, like many in Tokyo, was living in a tiny apartment; about 30 square meters. Just being there for twelve hours, or just a few hours a day in the living room without disturbing them too much was a real challenge. I had to decide when to leave them and give them some privacy.”

So how do you figure this whole organic thing out? Sure, you can start by going to the right restaurants and shopping at the right grocery stores, but what the heck are you looking for? You need to gain some knowledge, get some intel behind you. And there is no shortage of sources for you to get better educated on organic. There are hundreds, even thousands of books, magazines, web sites and sources of information out there for you to read. But here is one tidbit of info you can start with sometimes called the Dirty Dozen, a list of vegetables and fruits that you should always buy organic. Ready? Celery, peaches, strawberries, apples, blueberries, nectarines, bell peppers, spinach, kale, cherries, potatoes and grapes. - MO

Derrick Rose Kobe Bryant Kobe Bryant is still No. 1. In NBA jersey sales. On April 28, the league revealed its best-selling jerseys for the year, and the Lakers’ leading scorer again claimed the top spot, which he’s held since the start of the 2008-09 season.

Though his Bulls failed to make it beyond the first round of the playoffs, Derrick Rose continued to make a name for himself, coming in at No. 4. Dwight Howard The league’s back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year took the five spot in jersey sales.

Kobe Bryant and LeBron James as 1 and 2 -- shocking. The King held onto his No. 2 ranking from last year, but if he switches jersey numbers next season, we could see a shuffle in the rankings.

Dwyane Wade, who could be with a new team after free agency this summer, ranked No. 6 in sales.

THE CHAMP IS HERE

the top game.

Jose Aldo Defeats Urijah Faber to Retain WEC Belt

With his legs hurt, Faber couldn’t make a solid attempt at a takedown. The damage on his legs was so significant that after the cameras were turned off, Faber crashed to the floor and had to be helped up by his teammates.

He’s fast. He’s strong. And he clearly has no plans to hand over his title anytime soon. Brazilian phenom Jose Aldo recently visited his challenger Urijah Faber in his home turf in front of 14,144 fans at the ARCO Arena and turned in a dominant performance against the former champ. “I really like Sacramento,” said Aldo, who headlined the WEC 48 card with Faber. “This is where I made my debut and this is like a home away from home. I hope they will adopt me as one of their stars too.” Aldo was too quick for Faber, battering the former champ with leg kicks early on and continuing the assault through the remainder of the five-round fight. By the third round, it was very apparent that the kicks had taken a toll on Faber. And desperate in the final two rounds, Faber resorted to playing off his back, a strategy reserved for traditional Brazilian jiujitsu fighters, not wrestlers who favor

The positive to come out of Faber’s performance was his toughness, becoming the first opponent to take Aldo to a decision in the WEC. Aldo, who entered the fight with six straight TKOs, was cautious approaching the Faber fight. “I’m always careful when I go in the ring, but what happened was that Urijah was doing a great job of covering things up and the only strike we kept landing was the leg kick, so I kept going for it hoping that he would open up,” Aldo said. “But everytime I went in there to do something else, he was covering himself up very well. You have to take your hats off to Urijah Faber. He came in with a very good strategy and that was to protect himself.” The final scores were 49-45, 49-45 and 50-45. AZWeeklyMagazine.com

BEER! Beer Dinners The title of this article might be a little off, because, let’s face it…any dinner can be a beer dinner. But for purposes of today’s discussion, we are going to focus on those dinners that are planned as beer dinners, usually at a nice restaurant or hotel ballroom. In a previous article, we discussed the concept of pairing food and beer, now we are going to get a little more in depth. What is a beer dinner? Great question and one that you might have if you have never attended one. A beer dinner is typically a four to eight course meal during which a different style of beer is served with each course. Each beer is specifically paired by the chef to pair properly with the dish

being served. In many cases, the chef will cook with the beer in question or another beer that will complement the meal. Many times the dinners focus on one brewery and feature commentary during the meal from the brewmaster or some other brewery representative. Other times the chef will use beers from everything at his disposal, with no thought to which brewery, just the best possible pairing. Either one can be enjoyable and both have their merits. It is nice to have the brewer of a particular beer discussing the beer while you eat, but the larger variety offered at the latter style of dinner usually provides a better overall meal. And the good news is that just because beer dinners are “typically” held at restaurants doesn’t mean you can’t put one together yourself using basic principles of food and beer pairing.

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

How does a beer dinner get put together? Most chefs will start with a basic concept of what they want to do, perhaps a theme or event. Next they will taste beers that are available to them, and start narrowing down which beers they want to use and what type of dishes will go best with them. It’s a little like Iron Chef with beer as the secret ingredient. Finally they decide on the menu and the beer pairings and go to work. As they are preparing the dishes they will adjust the seasoning to provide the best complement to the beers. In other cases the chef will start with a menu and look for beers that will pair with it, again adjusting the preparation of each dish to emphasize the beer pairing. Either way works, but the former tends to be a little more efficient and provide the best possible pairings. The chefs also tend to enjoy that more since it allows them to

really exercise their creative muscles and do something a little different. Beer dinners can be simple or extravagant, inexpensive or pricey. I have been to very enjoyable meals that have featured pizza and burgers at a cost of only $30 and I have had incredible dinners where the chef threw everything he had in to the meal at a cost of almost $100. Both were fun events for what they were and while the $100 meal was close to perfection, the pizza and burger meal was much more casual and included a bunch of fun people who really added to the event. It seems as if five courses at a cost around $50 seems to be the norm for these events. There are even chefs that have made careers around beer dinners. Bruce Paton who bills himself as The Beer Chef is one

of these people. His beer dinners, held until recently at the Cathedral Hotel in San Francisco are dinners of legend. In one of the most wine oriented cities in the country he has made a name for himself with beer. In fact, the owner of a company specializing in wine events had this to say about Chef Paton, “The magical way that Bruce pairs beer and food should have the wine industry very nervous.” If you recall, we have discussed in past articles the versatility beer brings to the table, literally, when matched with food, and how this can far exceed the abilities of wine. So, what make Paton so special? How about pairing Slow Poached Arctic Char with Artichoke Salad, Chipotle Aioli and Micro-Arugula and Oskar Blues Gordon. Or what about Butter Poached Gulf Prawns, Apple Wood Bacon Flan and Citrus Nage with Schneider Wiesse. For those of you that scoffed at previous articles talking about beer pairing with chocolate, Paton does an annual beer and chocolate event as part of San Francisco Beer Week. This year Molten Chocolate Cake with Caramel Sabayon and Fleur du Sel was paired with North Coast Old Rasputin. Still think beer and chocolate don’t pair? Make sure you are at the 2011 event. Another chef, Sean Paxton, who goes by the title, The Hombrew Chef, recently planned and oversaw preparation of the feast at the World Beer Cup awards dinner which was the largest beer dinner ever served at over 2,000 at-

tendees. A recent Beer Blunch (kind of like brunch, I suppose) was held at the famed beer bar, The Toronado, in San Francisco and while it didn’t rival the World Beer Cup for number of attendees, it may have been the largest in terms of courses. This event, also prepared by Chef Paxton, featured twelve courses, sixteen beers and lasted over five hours. How about the in-home beer dinner? You can hire a private chef, or prepare it yourself. The best way is to get a few friends together, decide what would be good dishes and pairings, and divide up the work. Everybody can be responsible for one of the courses, match the beers, prepare the food and discuss the pairing at the dinner. It’s a different type of dinner party, and one that should be a good time. In Arizona beer dinners have been rather uncommon. A few places have ventured into this territory; most notably Boulders on Broadway, The Orange Table and Cafe Zuzu at the Hotel Valley Ho have all had very nice events. Expect that to change. As the Phoenix beer culture continues to grow, there will be more demand for these types of events. They offer an opportunity to experience some great food and great beer matched expertly by top chefs in the Valley. When it comes to fun, you really can’t beat that. And if you’re planning a really nice beer dinner at home, you know where to reach me.

Parick Flaherty came home drunk every evening about ten. Now, the Missus was never too happy about it, either. So one night she hides in the cemetery and figures to scare the beejeezus out of him. As poor Patrick wanders by, up from behind a tombstone she jumps in a red devil costume screaming, “Patrick Sean Flaherty, sure and ya’ don’t give up you’re drinkin’ and it’s to Hell I’ll take ye’”. Pat, undaunted, staggered back and demanded, “Who the hell are you?”. Too that the Missus replied, “I’m the Devil ya’ damned old fool”. To which Flaherty remarked, “Damned glad to meet you sir, I’m married to yer sister.”

The Night Owl BY MARIA TOURTCHANINOVA

Sunday is Mother’s Day, a time to think of a new concoction to kill that Saturday night infused hangover. Just a reminder that when your scrambling Sunday morning from store to store looking for just one single bouquet and having to settle for something half-dead with a bear attached to it and wondering why you thought it would all work out, remember these wise words: Chocolates don’t die. Not that this situation has happened to me before or anything. Ok moving on! Blue Martini

The Best New Way to Meet Singles!

May 6th, 2010 - May 12th, 2010 AZ WeeklyMagazine.com

On Wednesday night, my girlfriends and I finally made it out to Blue Martini for their ladies night. I had been to the Vegas location once before and was left with fond memories of tasty plates and strong creative martinis. So when the Phoenix location started airing their radio advertisements, I was constantly reminded to go. Damn you marketers. First things first, I finally found out where “City North” is, behind Desert Ridge - a whole new trendy area worth exploring. I expected something more low key but was pleasantly surprised. I stepped into a lively vibe among a mixed crowd of 20 to 40 to the occasional grandpa bachelor - hey they’re everywhere. It’s a swanky place and to my surprise those songs weren’t coming from a DJ but a live band! Inside on the stage, around 6 band members played and sang the latest hits as good as the artists themselves. The JJ’s band traded off with the DJ and a trumpet player who played along with some of the electro mixes. Refreshing. My favorite part about this bar was getting my first free martini (ladies night) on the patio, moving inside to mingle with the bar crowd and finally hitting the dance floor and taking breaks with live entertainment. Did I mention there actually was sitting room? You’ve got to love a place that encompasses all your needs. And then there was that one guy on the dance floor-bless his little heart, that just did not care how or why he looked like something out of Night at

the Roxbury - except even cooler dance moves. Reverting back to the drink list this bar is known for, I had read some reviews emphasizing an over-priced cocktail menu. Let me clear this up now. Headed your way is a big martini glass filled with deliciousness AND a shaker filled with another full drink. 2 martinis for $12? Hot blonde bartender, I think I’ll have another. 480-638-2583 www. bluemartinilounge.com The English Rose Tea Room Sun May 9th Sometimes don’t you just want to take your mom somewhere a bit more original? If your mom was the type to at one time play dress-up, then High Tea may be your calling. Aside from live music and party gifts let’s talk about the actual place. The tearoom is like walking into a dollhouse. Every piece of space is adorned with some sort of trinket. It’s fascinating. Among all the décor are table-clothed settings with tea sets and stacked trays full of goodies. There are 4 courses with multiple bites within each one. Cucumber with orange and mint butter, smoked salmon sandwiches, petit salad, Scones with Devonshire cream, cakes, tarts and truffles. It is a bit of child’s play. There is a closet of “lady– like” hats and guess who gets to wear one. And yes, this is more of a motherdaughter thing. So guys, whip out that pan you’ve never used and make mom proud…as in cook something! www. carefreetea.com 480.488.4812

Multi-platinum rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars just finished the European leg of their Into The Wild tour where they headlined arenas including sold-out shows at London’s Wembley Arena and Paris’ Bercy stadium. The band returned stateside to kick off the U.S. leg of the tour on April 9th at the Pearl in Las Vegas. Into The Wild is the band’s first tour in 3 years and is in support of their new album This Is War (Virgin Records), which was released in December, 2009. The album has already spawned a #1 single with “Kings & Queens” which spent 3 weeks at the top of the alternative radio airplay chart and the second single “This Is War” which Entertainment Weekly called “unashamedly epic” is following right behind. In just a few weeks of airplay, it is currently at #25 on the chart and climbing steadily. Mute Math and Neon Trees will open the U.S. leg of Into The Wild. Thirty Seconds To Mars will return to Europe in June to play the summer festival circuit.

Her church-trained, high-octave belting voice powered such hits as 1983’s If You Only Knew, the 1985 smash New Attitude, and the #1 single On My Own, a duet with Michael McDonald. Ann Wilson released her first-ever solo project titled Hope & Glory on 9/11/2007 featuring such distinguished guests as Elton John, k d lang, Gretchen Wilson, Wynonna Judd, Alison Krauss, Shawn Colvin, and Nancy Wilson to name a few. The following year, Heart hit the road

Ann Wilson and her younger sister Nancy Wilson first showed the world that women can rock when their band Heart stormed the charts in the ‘70s with hits like “Crazy on You,” “Magic Man,” “Barracuda,” “Straight On,” “Even It Up,” “Kick It Out” and many more. They continued topping the charts through the ‘80s and into the ‘90s with huge hits like “These Dreams,” “Alone,” “What About Love,” “If Looks Could Kill,” “Never” and other numbers that showcased the sisters’ enormous talents as both musicians and singers. Along the way, Heart sold more than 30 million records, had 21 top 40 hits, sold out arenas worldwide, and had a profound influence on rock music. Sponsored by The Platinum Room THE LEGENDARY JACK JONES TO PERFORM AT SKYE With a disarming smile, an effortlessly engaging wit and a vocal style that stands alone, Jack Jones is one of the greatest singers ranking with the legendary Mel Tormé, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra and Vic Damone. A true Singers’ Singer. A double Grammy winner, Jack performs around the globe to sold-out audiences in venues ranging from Jazz clubs to the London Palladium. Whether he performs with his trio or full Symphony orchestra, his musical perfection and vocal passion unfailingly illustrate why he stands with the luminaries. From the thematic threads of his shows to his ability to make the largest halls intimate, Jack Jones is the very definition of a complete and total entertainer. The New York Times raves, “he is arguably the most technically accomplished male pop singer...”. There is only one Jack Jones. Jack’s commitment to his art has earned him two Grammy’s for “Best Pop Male Vocal Performance” with his singles “Lollipops and Roses” by Anthony Velona and Bacharach/David’s “Wives and Lovers”. His release, Jack Jones Paints A Tribute To Tony Bennett, was nominated for “Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance”. He was also nominated for “The Impossible Dream” and his recording of “Wives and Lovers” was nominated for “Record of the Year”. His hit records include “The Race Is On”, “Lady”, “Ca” Me Irresponsible”, and “What I Did For Love”.

On April 13, 1989, he was honored with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, close to where his father’s star is located. Frank Sinatra said, “Jack Jones is one of the major singers of our time,” and Mel Tormé called him “the greatest ‘pure’ singer in the world” With over 50 recorded albums (17 of them charting Billboard’s Top 20) and consistently sold-out world tours, Jack Jones continues to charm audiences with his wit, sensitivity and vocal power. In addition to a successful recording career, Jones’ impressive credits include film and television roles; an internationally syndicated TV variety show; guest performances at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the White House. He has also performed and later recorded popular theme songs for film and TV (“Love with a Proper Stranger”, “The Love Boat”). Today, Jack can be found performing concerts to sold-out audiences around the globe at performing arts centers, casinos, symphony halls and even intimate cabaret rooms like the intimacy of The Platinum Room at Skye!

Selecting a beverage to accompany fine cigars is a matter of personal taste, which will vary depending on the occasion. The tradition is a fine cognac or brandy; the clean, crisp flavor of these liquers perfectly compliment the smooth flavor of a premium hand-rolled cigar. Alternates include Port (its sweetness blends splendidly if you choose a full-bodied smoke), single-malt Scotch, Bourbon and Wine. If you prefer non-alcoholic beverages, try fruit juice or a favorite cola--both do quite well to cleanse the palate between puffs.
