Gypsy is a light-hearted musical drama based on the memoirs of 1930’s burlesque entertainer, Louise Hovick (Gypsy Rose Lee) and her sister June. “Youth in Revolt” star Michael Cera, on the rise! The tag line for actor Michael Cera’s latest movie, ‘Every “Revolution” Needs A Leader’, could be viewed as the mantra for the next generation of actors as we start the 2010-decade. The Canadian born actor who turns 22 this year, has been developing his craft since his first TV role in 1999. Most viewers became aware of his skills in the hit cable TV series “Arrested Development” (20032006) as George-Michael Bluth of the ‘dysfunctional’ yet entertaining Bluth family. With his big screen performance, Michael Cera captured the movie going audiences’ attention in 2007 with the sleeper hit, “Superbad”

For his latest challenge as an actor, Michael Cera has starring status, and, has two roles in “Youth in Revolt”, Nick Twisp and Francois Dillinger! The story centers on Nick Twisp, who has his eye on the girl of his dreams (Portia Doubleday), while his parents’ relationship is at that all-important breaking point. Actor Ethan Hawke’s latest features ‘old school’ vampires with a twist of the new! Interview by Stan Robinson Vampires and werewolves are the ‘in’ thing. With the success of the “Twilight” movies, the younger generation has embraced the ‘new age’ version of these half-human elements of the night. Why would an actor decide to take on a project like “Daybreakers” with a vampire theme? As Ethan Hawke, the star of “Daybreakers” told me in a conversation, Ethan: The one thing I like about science fiction is its relevance to reality. If it’s rich in metaphors, there’s an awful lot one can draw on. That’s what I especially like about ‘Daybreakers’, the corporate infusion of today, into the aspects of a centuries old theme! “Daybreakers”, vampires with a corporate twist Review by Stan Robinson Admittedly, I’m very fond of the vampire films of old. The Hammer Film Productions (England) of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s are among my favorites with Peter Cushing as Van Helsing, the vampire hunter. My recent favorites in the genre of recent times include the ‘Underworld’ movie series starring Kate Beckinsale and the pairing of Wesley Snipes and Kris Kristofferson in the “Blade” films as vampire hunters.

“Daybreakers” has the style and ominousness of the old, add today’s theme of corporate dominance throughout the world, and we have a multi-layered story of survival. It’s 2019. A plague has beset the Earth with most of humankind being transformed into vampires. With blood being the substance of life for vampires and most of mankind being infected, blood is becoming a rare

commodity. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured vampire dominant race plots their survival, while a researcher who’s also infected (Ethan Hawke), works with a covert group of humans on a way to save humankind. The look and feel of “Daybreakers” is reminiscent of traditional vampire movies, while introducing the elements of a society that’s a mere 10 years from now. And yes, for the ‘vampire’ theme purists, there are plenty of scares, blood, and vampire protocols to make one think twice about the next time you see or read ads for donating at the blood bank! Sugar, honey, and other calorie-containing sweeteners add 60 calories per tablespoon to your day’s intake, so you’ll save considerable calories by cutting out the sugar you typically add to your coffee, tea, cereal, beverages, yogurts, etc. Artificially sweetened foods may not have the calories of sugar-sweetened foods, but they keep sweetness on our taste buds and our minds. Cut out all added sugars (real and artificial) for at least a week to help you break free of your compulsion to eat sweet foods. Then, minimize your intake going forward. 2. DON’T add salt to anything. Eating foods with a lot of added salt causes you to retain water, which drives up the number on the scale and makes you feel uncomfortable. Part of this week-long cleanse is getting rid of salty foods that promote bloating.

3. DON’T eat starches with dinner (including bread, rice, pasta, peas, beans, corn and potatoes). People tend to overeat starches for a number of reasons: these foods have great mouth feel, it’s hard to estimate portions, they’re some of America’s favorite comfort foods, and they’re calorie-dense. People are especially conditioned to overeat these foods at dinner. By making them totally offlimits, you don’t have to cut yourself

off mid-meal (after you’ve already primed your tastebuds). 4. DON’T drink alcohol. Alcohol adds a lot of empty calories to your diet, plus it lowers your inhibitions so you’re more likely to veer off plan and make unhealthy food choices. By cutting out the alcohol, you’ll give your liver a well needed break and you’ll have firmer resolve to stick with the rest of the diet’s “do’s and dont’s.” DO’S 1. DO eat on a schedule and enjoy three meals and one snack each day. 2. DO drink lots of water throughout the day, including two 8-ounce glasses before lunch and two 8-ounce glasses before dinner. (These before-meal waters should be consumed up to 30 minutes before eating.) Enjoy as much additional water as you want during meals and throughout the day. 3. DO enjoy “water alternatives” in unlimited quantities at any point during the day. These include: coffee or tea with 1% or skim milk only, seltzer (plain and naturally flavored), sparkling water, club soda, or water with lemon/lime/orange wedges. 4. DO begin dinner with a healthy appetizer: a large tossed salad (with 2-3 tablespoons reduced-calorie dressing); a bowl of broth-based nonstarchy veggie* soup; or any plain vegetable such as a sliced cucumber, red pepper sticks or green beans. 5. DO indulge in non-starchy vegetables* in unlimited quantities at any time throughout the day, particularly when you get hungry between designated meal and snack times. 6. DO engage in 30 to 60 minutes of aerobic exercise everyday (walking is fine). Note* Non-starchy vegetables include: asparagus, beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cucumber, green leafy vegetables, eggplant, green

beans, mushrooms, okra, onion, peppers, radishes, snow peas, tomato, and zucchini BREAKFAST OPTIONS • Cereal and Skim Milk: 1 cup whole grain cereal (any brand 150 calories and 3+ grams fiber per 1-cup serving) + 1 cup skim or 1% low-fat milk + ¾ cup berries or ½ banana (or enjoy an orange or ½ grapefruit on the side instead). • Oatmeal with Fruit and Yogurt: Half cup plain, dry oats (or 1 packet instant oats) prepared with water and topped with ½ cup fresh berries, or 2 tablespoons raisins, or half sliced banana. Plus, enjoy a 6-oz container of nonfat plain, flavored or Greek yogurt on the side. • Egg White Omelet with Fruit: Egg white omelet (4-5 egg whites) with any combination of non-starchy vegetables and 2 tablespoons reduced fat cheese plus one of the following fruits on the side: ½ grapefruit, one orange, ¾ cup berries, ½ banana, ½ cup grapes. LUNCH OPTIONS • Large Entrée Salad: Top a large bed of lettuce with 5-ounces grilled chicken or fish and any non-starchy vegetables (avoid cheese, croutons, nuts, and dried fruit in your salad). Dress with two dashes of olive oil and unlimited balsamic vinegar or 2-3 tablespoons reduced-fat salad dressing. • Open-Faced Turkey Sandwich: 4 ounces turkey breast on one slice whole wheat bread (leave off the top slice), layered with optional lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, roasted peppers, and mustard. Enjoy with lots of raw or steamed non-starchy veggies on the side. • Turkey Burger on Greens: 5-ounce turkey burger on a bed of mixed greens (unlimited amounts) with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mustard, salsa, and/or ketchup. Enjoy with lots of raw or steamed nonstarchy veggies on the side.

DINNER OPTIONS Remember to start dinner every night with a large tossed salad (with 2-3 tablespoons reduced-calorie dressing); or a bowl of broth-based non-starchy veggie soup; or any plain vegetable such as a sliced cucumber, red pepper sticks or green beans. • Grilled Chicken Parmesan with Broccoli: 5-ounce grilled chicken breast topped with 2 tablespoons marinara sauce and 1 ounce part-skim shredded mozzarella cheese (broil or microwave just until cheese is melted). Serve with unlimited amount steamed broccoli (or any other nonstarchy veggie) on the side. • Fish with Sautéed Spinach: 5-ounce broiled or grilled fish fillet (wild salmon, tilapia, haddock, and cod are all good options) seasoned with 1 teaspoon olive oil, lemon juice, and any herbs/spices. Serve with unlimited amount of spinach, steam or sautéed with 1 teaspoon olive oil (or cooking spray) and optional minced garlic (or substitute any other non-starchy veggie). • Dinner Veggie Stir-Fry: 5-ounces chicken, lean steak, pork tenderloin, or shrimp (or 8-10 ounces tofu) plus unlimited onions, carrots, mushrooms, peppers, and/or any other non-starchy veggies sautéed in 1 teaspoon canola oil (or cooking spray). Drizzle with up to 2 tablespoons bottled low-sodium Teriyaki sauce. LIVE! SECTION LITA FORD – WICKED WONDERLAND (JLRG) Lita, just received a copy of your new CD ‘Wicked Wonderland’ and I wanted to offer my two cents. Take it for what it’s worth. I’m rather confused as to your musical path as of late. If you’re being true to yourself, that’s cool I guess. So after a 15 year absence from the music scene, one would hope this is your true vision and not you being influenced by other people’s vision of what you should be. With your husband Jim Gillette’s vocals all over the record and a barrage of industrial influenced 90’s era metal, I can’t help but wonder if you have radio reception since residing in the Caribbean . I’m just not hearing any SONGS here. I am

hearing Jim’s high pitched vocals more frequently than any guest vocalist on any album ever. I’m also hearing something that sounds more like a confusing, noncohesive effort. One might think you were a musical duo now a’la Simon & Garfunkel yet the album is credited to you. Heavy industrial noises that may have been hip 15 years ago and nothing resembling your past don’t help the fact that there are no songs on this album. I’m sure you put your best foot forward, but your fans were probably expecting something resembling what they loved from you. This record sounds like you were asked to contribute occasional vocals on someone else’s album. Sorry, I just don’t get it. Perhaps this is your “Elder” or “Shadowlife” (KISS and Dokken’s miserable musical failures). If so, learn and grow from it. C’mon, take a chance. Instead of ordering your usual “mainstream” beer, show some originality, some worldliness and ask for one of the better microbrews available in the desert. You may be amazed what a craft beer tastes like. Most have fuller taste (some call it stronger), but in nearly all cases, you will experience a taste that took the brewery years (or generations) to perfect. Quite a number of the beers are obscure in this country or state, yet they dominate in the areas they originated from. Certainly worth a pint...Cheers! BELL’S AMBER ALE Bell’s Amber is made from mostly pale malt and some Munich and caramel malts. These add a little sweetness, which is balanced by more hops. The result is a rich color and fruity flavor. Bell’s Brewery, Inc., founded by Larry Bell as a home-brewing supply shop in 1983, sold its first beer in 1985.

Bell’s Brewery has grown from a tiny operation renting part of a former plumbing supply warehouse, to a bustling, regional craft brewery that plays a role in changing the beerscape of our nation. ALASKAN INDIA PALE ALE (IPA) India Pale Ale is a style of ale originally derived from a colonial thirst for British-brewed beers. When shipping beer to the colonies, particularly India, thought had to be given to

the length of the journey. By initially brewing beer to high specific gravities it could continue to ferment during the journey. Larger amounts of hops were also added for their preservative properties and resulted in a golden beer with a hoppy flavor and higher alcohol content. The pronounced hop flavor makes this style of beer refreshing and a delicious accompaniment to grilled prawns, spicy food and as an aperitif.
