time I went back with friends and knew I wanted to play Bill W. and I do it but in a different way.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT BILL W. AND DR. BOB THE TRUE STORY ABOUT THE FOUNDERS OF ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS Now thru June 19, 2010 WEDNESDAY - SATURDAY EVENINGS: Dinner at 5:30 PM; Show at 7:30 PM SATURDAY AND SUNDAY MATINEES: Lunch at 11:45 AM; Show at 1:15 PM The powerful drama Bill W. and Dr. Bob tells the story of a stockbroker and a surgeon, both alcoholics, whose relationship becomes the genesis of Alcoholics Anonymous. What eventually leads to the Twelve Steps of AA begins as a combination of inspiration and accident. Last weekend the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre opened a most extraordinary play, Bill W. and Dr. Bob by Stephen Bergman and Janet Surrey in its beautiful new theater space, the Marquee Theatre. The play is the true story of the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous and their wives Lois Wilson and Anne Smith, creators of Al-Anon. Gary Kimble and Richard Davis Springle, each give magnetic, memorable performances in the title roles of Bill W. and Dr. Bob. Kimble and Springle head a large and wonderfully satisfying, superb ensemble of players. Gary Kimble and I spoke about the play last week. Kimble began his career in 1976 with the Kenley Players. He has since performed on stages around the world, in thirty-four countries abroad and in eight hundred cities across the US and Canada. Q: Tell us about Bill W. and Dr. Bob.

8

I saw the show in New York four times in its original production. I loved it. Every

A few years went by and I found myself in Florida working for the Prather Entertainment Group. I did an article in Florida Weekly where I discussed my own alcoholism and recovery. The owners of the theater read it. They were semi-retired and not fully involved with producing at the time. They invited me to church and told me that they had read the article. As I got to know them better, they suggested that there was a lot of alcoholism around them in people that they loved, co-workers and so forth. Tom Prather asked me if I had ever heard of a play Bill W. and Dr. Bob? I told him that I had seen it four times in New York. He asked me what I thought of it and I told him there were some changes I would make but I thought it was a powerful play. Tom asked me, “Should we do it? Do you think it would help people that I care about if they saw it?” I told him that it certainly couldn’t hurt. It carries a powerful message and it’s a great piece of theater. Tom asked, “Who will come?” I told him, “Every recovering drunk in Lee County Florida.” Tom secured the rights to produce the play and we began to work on it. We put it into their Black Box space during a time in the season when they never book a show. We started working on it and all the people he was concerned about were working on the project and they all ended up getting sober. Theater is such a powerful medium. It brings the power of the spoken word and as Bill says in the play, “When nobody is looking, it slips up under your ribs and hits you in the heart.” The play has become a mission for us, a mission of love. Out of that production, the phones started ringing and we began to be invited all over the place. “Could you bring the play here? Could you bring it there?” The play sold out in Florida for its five week run. There was a waiting list at the Box Office. We didn’t know how we would do but we started to take it to other cities. Now it’s a year later and we are officially a national tour. After we leave Mesa, sponsored by Hazelden, we go to perform at the seventy-fifth International AA Conference in San Antonio. Q:The Prather Family is incredibly generous, I understand that this production will also support Community Bridges, Inc.-A Pathway To Hope.

May 20th, 2010 - May 26th, 2010 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

That’s exactly right. We’ve done that in every city that we play. We donate proceeds to a local recovery organization in need of support. Community Bridges does angel work. As Tom likes to say, “We’re not doing this to make money. If we were doing it to make money, we’d be doing Mamma Mia! ” Bill W. and Dr. Bob is a great piece of theater and it’s about doing service. The alcoholic personality is not unlike any other human being’s but it’s often exaggerated, magnified as part of the disease. It becomes compelling theater because everything they do is on a grand scale, more complicated, more epic. Our play is a great story about American ingenuity, one of the greatest inventions that has transformed the lives of millions of people around the globe. Q: This production is a first for the Broadway Palm. It’s the first step towards officially turning that space into a theater. To be doing a drama in this theater is also a first. Every time we have done this play, there has been a paradigm shift. It brings new audiences into the theater. The majority of times, a lot of our audience has never been in a theater before. The comments, the E-Mail, the feedback, the letters and phone calls from people are so moving. We do a talk back after each performance. The cast comes out on stage to talk and usually the majority of the audience stays for a much as an hour asking questions and sharing their personal experiences. Q: What’s up next for you after Bill W. and Dr. Bob? We have been talking about my doing

some of the roles in next season’s shows but nothing is finalized. Bill W. and Dr. Bob continues on and on. After performing at the Cameo Center during the 75th International A.A. Conference in San Antonio there will be an eight to ten week tour, October, November, December. We have also been asked to take the play on a couple of cruises. We are working with Hazelden as a corporate sponsor to bring the show to Nashville, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Columbus and Washington DC. Dartmouth College has invited us to come next March. I think I will be playing Bill for quite a while. INTERVIEW AND STORY BY JOSEPH GORDON The Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre will donate a portion of the proceeds from Bill W. and Dr. Bob to Community Bridges, Inc.-A Pathway To Hope, an organization providing clinical treatment, family preservation, prevention and education in the hope of reducing the negative impact of alcoholism and drug addiction. Tickets to Bill W. and Dr. Bob may be purchased by phone at (480) 3256700, or at in person at the Box Office. All seats for Bill W. and Dr. Bob are $20, a buffet dinner may be included for an additional $15. Bill W. and Dr. Bob will play Wednesday through Saturday Evenings. For the evening performances the dinner buffet is at 5:30 PM, the show begins at 7:30 PM. For the Saturday and Sunday matinees, luncheon buffet is at 11:45 AM, the show begins at 1:15 PM. Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre 5247 E. Brown Road Mesa 85205

By Nick Connell BILL W. and DR. BOB in the Marquee Room at Broadway Palm in Mesa There are many true stories that are retold in books, movies and plays. Some have dramatic tales of life and death woven in to the fabric of the characters lives. The characters then overcome their shortcomings or crisis by transforming the conflict into a healing crisis which then leads them to a new lease on life- a second chance. But rare are true stories made with a dynamic element that reaches beyond time, helping millions of people, in all walks of life, heal and recovery from sickness and disease. BILL W and DR. BOB is one true story that will endure the test of time in its wisdom and revelation around two characters that cared enough about others that miracles by the millions followed. Tom and Deborah Prather can be thanked for bringing the national tour of BILL W and DR. BOB to valley audiences at the Broadway Palm in Mesa. Their dramatic production of the Stephen Bergman and Janet Surrey play is a real gem with touching moments made to reveal the truth and healing behind this phenomenal story. Director/Actor Gary Kimble is impressive as Bill W. His desperate need of a friend to talk his way out of a death march arrives just in time in the form of Dr.Bob, played with spirit and courage by Richard Springle. These two then embark on a miraculous theatrical journey that will touch your heart with love and humility. Add in a strong supporting cast in Bonnie Knapp and Nancy Antonio, as Bill and Bob’s compassionate and persevering wives, and you have a story worth millions. Through June 19th. Tickets 480-325-6700 or BroadwayPalmWest.com.

simply a smarter, healthier way to dine.

I recently had a post on my FaceBook page that tried to dispel the benefits of organic living. To be short, they attempted to say that eating organic was not helpful nor beneficial. They obviously do not get it. Here’s my take: Natural quality and better taste are not the only benefits to eating organic. The principles behind organic food - the focus on health, the environment and the community - are what really make the difference. The growth processes of organic agriculture encourages the development of higher quality food that limits the number of unnecessary additives, exposure to synthetic pesticides, herbicides, soil fumigates, and genetic engineering. Organic agriculture encourages proper water quality, improvement in the quality and fertility of the soil, the reduction of soil erosion, and relies on natural biological systems for pest and weed control. Buying local organic produce means fresher products that put money into the hands of local farmers, assisting in the growth of the local economy. Coming together to yield higher quality, sustainable, healthier products. - MO May 20th, 2010 - May 26th, 2010

Chris Farley was originally cast as Shrek’s voice and even recorded the dialogue. However, after his death, the role was given to fellow Saturday Night Live performer, Mike Myers. A remnant of Farley remains when Shrek uses “finger quotes”, a trademark of Farley’s character Bennett Brower!

Our last two states to make up our country of fifty states are Alaska and Hawaii. “Princess Kaiulani” focusing on Hawaii and the eventual annexation 1898, has all the elements of a documentary, an adventure, and a love story, all rolled into one exceptionally captivating movie. Writer and director Marc Forby brings to the screen, the true story of Hawaiian “Princess Kaiulani’, chronicling her childhood life and her struggle to maintain the autonomy of Hawaii in the face of American colonization in the late 1800s. From the documentary perspective we’re given the details of President Grover Cleveland’s second term (1893-1897) when Hawaii was being ‘pulled’ in the direction of a colony without the rights of states. Events are presented which reflect the various positions in government. The adventures of the young princess, growing up in a multi-racial home and the struggle within the princess’ family for the ‘crown’ of rule of the Hawaiian Islands, present a story of adventure. And when the princess’ education takes her to England at 13, she grows into womanhood and falls in love. It’s also during this time in England that the realization of her future and the Hawaiian Islands comes to the forefront. We know from history that Hawaii became a state on August 21, 1959. Marc Forby captures the essence of the 1870’s in Hawaii, encompassing the lifestyles of the islands, the politics of the time, and the story of Victoria Kaiulani Cleghorn (1875–1899), a champion of the Hawaiian AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Islands independence who accomplished more in her 23 short years of life than most in a lifetime. Bringing the story to the big screen was a labor of love and an honored commitment for writer/director Marc Forby. Talking with Marc on the reaction of “Princess Kaiulani” for the advance screenings, I asked him about the audiences’ response. I loved it and watched it twice! Marc: Women universally love it, from any age to grandmothers, but its really polarized men, they subsequently really loved it or are bored out of their minds! I’m part French and have always loved movies about strong women, I love history, and I love the Victorian era, and my wife is from Hawaii so I’m aware of their struggles. Stan: I am so in love with that period, “The Young Victoria” was one of my 10 best films of 2009, like your taste Marc (with a chuckle!) How long did it take to pull the project together? Marc: I started writing it in the fall of 2005, and brought it to a producer who thought he could pull it off. We actually found the financing in Hawaii after working on the script for about another year, we were kind of on-hold for a year, overall, totally it took about four years. There’s more of my stimulating conversation as we talk locations, shooting in Hawaii, and capturing the essence of the late 1800s Hawaii with Marc Forby and bringing “Princess Kaiulani” to the big screen at www.ScreenScene.org

Q’orianka Kilcher portrays Hawaii’s Princess Kaiulani By Randy Montgomery Hawaii… beaches, crystal blue waters, five star resorts and Princess Kaiulani. The princess is one of Hawaii’s most notable dignitaries, yet few outside the state know little about her. Director Marc Forby introduces us to the Princess in Roadside Attraction’s new film. Portraying Princess Kaiulani is actress Q’orianka Kilcher, who was fortunate enough to grow up in Hawaii and was eager to play such an important figure. “She was a hero and a role model for women all around the world. She was a graceful diplomat and at the age of 17 went to Washington to speak on behalf of her people.” “I grew up in Hawaii and have always carried on the Hawaiian spirit. I was honored and humble to be a part of the film,” says Kilcher. “When people think of Hawaii, they think of palm trees, but they don’t know much about the rich history and culture. It is important to tell stories like this. I am so happy that the world is finally going to know about Hawaii, its history and the issues Hawaiian people still face today.”

You may recognize Kilcher from her critically-acclaimed role in The New World in which she starred opposite Colin Farrell and portrayed Pocahontas. Having that first-hand account of who the Princess was made playing the role much easier. “It was different from The New World. I read a lot of books, but there was nothing set in stone about who Pocahontas was or why she did things. I had to decide who I thought she was and how I was to portray her.” That was not the case with Princess Kaiulani. Too add to the authenticity, filming took place at Hawaii’s renowned Bishop Museum and for the first time ever, film crews were allowed inside of the Iolani Palace. “It brought tears to my eyes to

be able to see the palace brought back to life,” says Kilcher.

Kilcher herself has many similarities to the woman she portrays. At 16, she went to Washington herself to speak on behalf of indigenous people and currently runs an organization which deals with human rights and environmental activism.

Preparing for the role was not as difficult as making sure an accurate portrayal was delivered. “It was a challenge to preserve the memory of Princess Kaiulani and do her justice,” explains Kilcher. Research came easy. “Hawaii is a wonderful place because they really preserve their history and culture. I did a lot of research; going to the Bishop Museum and speaking to my elders and reading through a bunch of books and letters from Princess Kaiulani. It was amazing to read her actual letters, which gave a glimpse into who she was and what she actually felt.”

FILM! SECTION “Do the roar.” - Butter Pants, Shrek Forever After Shrek: An Era of Filmmaking Comes to an End By Randy Montgomery

The fourth and final installment in DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek series is now in theatres. When asked at a press conference in Los Angeles, if Shrek Forever After would truly be the last Shrek film, the filmmakers agreed and said “yes.” “That’s our intent, this is the last film,” proclaimed producer Aron Warner. “We brought it (the Shrek series) to a satisfying conclusion. We were really conscious in summing up the previous Shrek films. It’s kind of sad, it’s the final one,” added director Mike Mitchell. “It’s sad, but it’s also very satisfying,” says Antonio Banderas who has plays the voice of Puss in Boots, a character that has appeared in three of the four films. “I was watching the Thanksgiving Day Parade and there he was, Shrek, next to Mickey Mouse. Shrek is now a part of American culture.”

16

American culture indeed, but Shrek is a worldwide phenomenon. The first three films have surpassed $600 million at the global box office. But, it’s not just your average every day moviegoers that are in love with the big green ogre, his wife Fiona and his fun-loving sidekick Donkey. Shrek has also played the Cannes Film Festival where, according to Banderas, “the entirety of Europe interrupted the May 20th, 2010 - May 26th, 2010

makers are so committed.”

“We are all grateful and blown away by how well it has gone,” says Mike Meyers, the comedian who has been the voice of Shrek since the beginning. “When Jeffrey (Katzenberg) said ‘would you like to be in an animated movie?’ I said ‘yes.’ I asked about the title. He said ‘Shrek.’ I said that was the worst title I had ever heard in my life. I didn’t know what it was going to be like. But, the first time I saw it with an audience, the line ‘you are beautiful to me,’ got a gasp. People were so into the romance.”

With the Shrek series coming to end, cast members have found other ways to keep up with the roles they have played for over a decade. “I now live in a swamp,” jokes Mike Meyers. There were also hints to a spin-off Puss in Boots movie!

Why are the stories so popular, and why do audiences of all ages enjoy the films? Fiona, or Cameron Diaz explains her theory, “Shrek is for both adults and children. You are never too old or too young to learn these lessons (presented in the movies). This has been the case through all the Shrek films and why they have been so successful. They’re not just speaking to one audience. Anyone who watches them can walk away and understand exactly how Shrek and Fiona relate to their own life.” Donkey (Eddie Murphy), has a much simpler explanation, “It’s really funny and well made. It is that simple. It’s also smart. Those things add up to hits.” Meyers adds two additional reasons, “The writing is so great and the filmAZWeeklyMagazine.com

A True Love’s Kiss: Shrek Forever After By Randy Montgomery

Shrek Forever After introduces us to Rumpelstiltskin (Walt Dohrn), a shady deal maker, who’ll strike a deal with anyone for a price. He’s about to secure the kingdom of Far, Far Away from the king in queen in exchange for Princess Fiona’s (Cameron Diaz) release from the dragon’s keep. His evil plan is thwarted when he finds out that Shrek (Mike Meyers) has come to the rescue. He will stop at nothing to be ruler of the kingdom and make the once feared green ogre into what he used to be. Fast forward a bit and we find Shrek and Princess Fiona living a seemingly happy life in the swamp with their three new youngsters. The daily routine of married life, taking care of the kids and being hounded by tourists is starting to wear on Shrek. At his children’s’ first birthday party, Shrek loses his cool and storms off. In the forest he meets Rumpelstiltskin, who

eagerly offers to make Shrek the ogre he once was – at least just for a day. What Shrek doesn’t know is that the plan will turn his whole world upside down and will change Far, Far Away in unimaginable ways. “Shrek isn’t the same Shrek he was in the first movie. He’s not the same ogre. He is a dad and has responsibilities. I thought that was an interesting take. It’s an issue he would really have. In the previous films, he always wants to go back to the swamp; that’s his main goal. Now he’s there and is surrounded by people he loves… he’s still not satisfied,” says director Mike Mitchell. What happens after the deals turns out to be “a very complex story of an alternate reality. Shrek’s life is turned upside down. When the day’s up, he’s not going to exist.” “In order for him to learn his lesson, we felt that he needed to step outside his life and see what it would be like if he never saved Fiona from that tower,” adds producer Gina Shay. Audiences will love Shrek Forever After because, “You get to see true love happen all over again for the first time between Shrek and Fiona. It’s your favorite moment from the first movie, experienced all over again. It’s a beautiful love story,” says Diaz. Shrek learns, “Even with all of its flaws, life is really, really good,” says producer Teresa Chen.

Seeing a film in 3D is a treat. Seeing it in IMAX 3D enhances the experience even farther. Adding 3D special effects to Shrek Forever After was not an after thought, as is the case with some movies. Technology was incorporated at the onset and made a part of the process. Director Mike Mitchell explains, “We were fortunate working at DreamWorks. We embraced the 3D early on when we were crafting the story. When we decided to do 3D, Jeffrey Katzenberg had us meet up with James Cameron. We got to talk to him about 3D and see scenes from Avatar. How to Train Your Dragon was being made at DreamWorks at the same time. All the directors and story boarders at the studio help each other out as well. We also found that we could use 3D as a story telling device.”

Buying more local food reduces fossil fuel use, supports small farmers who would otherwise be edged out of business by huge agribusinesses, keeps more money in our local economy and reduces air and water pollution. It can reduce your food bills and many people find that locally grown produce lasts longer because it’s fresher. Where do you find local food? Visit your local farmers markets where you’ll find an enticing array of vineripened fresh fruits and veggies, raw honey, herbed goat cheese, locally grown eggs, and many hand-made goodies prepared by people in your community. Cien Agaves’ Tequila & Tacos, on the other hand, looks to knockout the crowd by turning up the heat between the ropes. Outside fighter 5th & Wine hopes to wow the audience with an array of simple, flavorful, entries. Juggernaut Oregano’s Pizza Bistro and the proverbial underdog Va Bene Fine Italian Cuisine will step into the ring to prove Italian fare can hold its own. Tickets to the Bite Nite main event are $50. GAME! A TRIBUTE TO GRACIE JIU-JITSU

The Explosion of Mixed Martial Arts Pays Tribute to the First Family of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Submission Self-Defense The martial arts were revolutionized when Royce Gracie stepped into the Octagon of the first Ultimate Fighting Championship and showed to the world the importance of ground work and technique. He showed how timing, closing the distance, using positioning and leverage can be used to dominate fighters of any size, in competition and on the streets. Through several ‘no holds barred’ events held around the world, many martial artists recognized that ground fighting must be an intricate part of any self-defense system in order for it to be complete.

The Gracie style was created in Brazil in the early part of this century by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu pioneer Carlos Gracie, who studied traditional Japanese jiu-jitsu as a teenager under the great Japanese champion, Mitsuyo Maeda (known in Brazil as Conde Koma -- the “Count of Combat”). Carlos Gracie, who was interested in street fighting and was also a boxer, quickly modified the classical techniques he learned from Count Koma to meet the demands of real, “no rules” fighting in the streets of Brazil. The young Carlos Gracie then tested and refined his system through constant matches, open to all comers, constantly working to make it more effective. At one point, he even advertised in newspapers and on street corners for new opponents upon whom to practice and further refine his art. He fought anyone and

everyone who was willing, regardless of size, weight or fighting style. Even though he was a mere 135 pounds, his style was so effective that Carlos Gracie was never defeated and became a legend in Brazil. This tradition of open challenge is a part of the heritage of the Gracie style of jiu-jitsu. Carlos Gracie taught his style of jiu-jitsu to his four

younger brothers (Oswaldo, Gastão, Jorge, and finally Helio) and to his older sons (including Carlson and Carley), and they in turn taught their brothers, sons, nephews and cousins. After Carlos retired from the ring, he managed the fight careers of his brothers and sons, continuing to challenge fighters of all styles throughout the world. This tradition of open challenge has been continued by his sons, grandsons, brothers, nephews, and students,

who have consistently demonstrated the superiority of the Gracie style in real fights and minimum-rule matches in rings throughout the world. Although today’s mixed martial artist has evolved into a new hybrid, extremely well-rounded competitor in a category all its own, we must always remember to salute the historical achievements of those teachers and technicians before us. It is through their early mastery and lifelong dedication to an art form that devised the groundwork for what has evolved into the most popular sport in the world today, mixed martial arts.

In his new book, Golf Sonnets, James Long Hale shares eighteen amusing illustrated Shakespearean sonnets about golf. The gold embossed hardbound cover is designed to fit in a golf bag and entertain you from the first to the eighteenth hole. Golf Sonnets is the ONLY collection of sonnets about golf on the market and is the perfect gift for the literate golfer who ‘has everything.’ “Golf is a funny game, full of irony and contradiction,” says Hale. “It was started by shepherds, the lowest of the low in society, and yet it has risen to a game for the elite. Sonnets also were written for the masses, not the elites, and yet have come to be associated with elite society.”

A few of the 18 verses in Golf Sonnets include: ●

● ● ●

The Game…”if you’re thinking that Golf is less than lame, you need to get a life, not just a Game.” The Equipment…”so take a lesson if your game is ill – equipment is no substitute for skill.” The Nineteenth Hole…”where any reason to procrastinate is welcomed as a virtue, not a vice.” The Golf Widow…”but here’s the poor Golf Widow’s sorrow: she’ll have to see her man again tomorrow.”

“A good golf shot and a good sonnet produce a similar joy of soul that bears repeating. We want more. We want to experience that feeling again,” explains Hale. Golf Sonnets is available for purchase at the author’s website www.GolfSonnets.com and Amazon

are at least as much fun during the day as they are at night, some might be more so. We have plenty of them, so let’s focus on the ones that feature great craft beer.

Day Drinking I’ve always loved the drinking songs of Tom T. Hall. The classic, to me anyway, is “I Like Beer”. That song gets right to the point and addresses the situation head on. Another favorite from Mr. Hall is “Day Drinking”, a story about a couple of guys out on the town since 9:30 or 10:00 that morning. Not only that, but they are regulars at spending the daytime hours in bars telling the waitress how they won the war. Thinking about that song, along with a couple of afternoon beers, it occurred to me that Phoenix is a town with some great day drinking bars. Bars that

Right at the top of the list has to be TT Roadhouse. Located on 68th Street, just north of Thomas in Scottsdale, this tiny bar is real easy to drive right by. Once you get in there, it’s an enchanted world. A dozen or so tap handles, featuring a variety of great beer, including Moose Drool, SKA Decadent, Bell’s Oberon, New Belgium Ranger IPA and more make this a great place to hang out on a bar stool all day. Everything about the place is fantastic. The jukebox has been described as the best in the Valley, and it is one of those few bars that looks good with daylight streaming in the windows. It’s not exactly classy, but definitely more than a dive bar. They describe it best when they call themselves “A maverick cult on the fringe of respectable drinking.” That, along with a friendly bar staff and owner and a good mix of people

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

hanging out says all you need to know about TT Roadhouse. Sun Up Brewery at 322 E. Camelback is on our list. A small bar and dining area gives way to a courtyard which seems comfortable even during the worst of the summer, and beyond that, the brewery building which also has a large open space filled with tables, and another bar. Brewmaster Uwe Boer can frequently be seen through the glass working hard on his amazing beers. Everything from the Trooper IPA to the Armadillo Red and the Light Rail Cream Ale get his exacting attention. There are several other beers always on tap, and expect to find a cask conditioned specialty most of the time. The food is outstanding so you can maintain your nourishment while having a couple of beers. Best of all may be that they are less than a five minute walk to the light rail stop at Camelback and Central. If you ever had a drink in Tempe, you probably know the Yucca Tap Room, but did you know that they now have some great beer there? And you may think that Yucca is all about great bands, and it is. Still, sitting there during the day time nursing a Bell’s

Oberon or a Left Hand Milk Stout poured off the nitrogen faucet makes for a relaxing afternoon. You have the opportunity to shoot a little pool or play an arcade game or two in case you need a break from relaxing on your bar stool watching the world go by. Of course Yucca is one of those rare places where you can start your day at 6:00 AM with Happy Hour. If you don’t like pool and arcade games, or just sitting there staring out the window, how about a little Off Track Betting? Stray Cats on University in Tempe allows you to bet on the horses while enjoying some fine craft beer. Have Ska True Blonde, Dale’s Pale Ale or New Belgium 1554 on draft while you wager on the ponies. You may not win, but you will never have enjoyed losing so much. If you’re up in North Phoenix, stop by Mellow Mushroom at I17 and Deer Valley. Located in the middle of two large shopping areas, you can relax and unwind at a bar featuring 36 craft beers on tap, over 50 bottles and cans of craft beer, great pizza and a couple of truly fun daytime bartenders. Happy Hour, with half price pints, starts at 3:00, but you’ll Continued on Page 31...

probably arrive right after lunch and spend the afternoon. On 7th Street at Sheridan, look for The Main Ingredient. Matt Diamond, who has been behind the scenes at many great bars and restaurants in Phoenix, steps out front to present his version of a great bar. With a patio as big as the inside, a top notch staff, and Sonoran Inebriator, Oskar Blues Gordon and Avery White Rascal on tap, how can you go wrong? Couple that with fantastic food and you can let the day run right in to the evening. If you need anything else… Happy Hour runs all day until about 6:00 PM.

There are a few other spots in town like Moto on 7th Street and Glendale, Buffalo Wings and Rings in Chandler, Whole Foods (yes Whole Foods, go there and you will understand) in Chandler and De La Cruz if you are out in the Gold Canyon area. All offer good beer and a good environment to spend an afternoon with. No matter when you have a beer, whether it’s a breakfast beer, a beer with lunch, an early afternoon, or starting the evening off, day drinking is a nice change of pace. Enjoy the places above and go for the good beer whenever you can.

If wine is more your thing, take a trip to Cave Creek and try out Brix in the Stagecoach Village shopping center. Described as, “If Billy the Kid and Wyatt Earp drank wine, this is where they would drink it,” Brix is a fine place to while away an afternoon. A wonderful selection of wines, an owner who will talk sports, country music, politics or just about anything

else that interests you and a diverse clientele make this a great stop. On any given day, you might find yourself sitting next to the guitar player from one of the hot local bands, a professional bull rider, or any of the other fascinating people you might meet there. This is one of those places where one visit makes you a regular. And, look for some good beer to be available there shortly.

Throughout Europe, Bert kept seeing the same golden telephone on a marble column. At each, he asked about it and the answer was always the same: a direct line to Heaven and he could call for a thousand dollars. Upon visiting Ireland, Bert walked in a churcha and noticed the golden telephone, but underneath it there was a sign stating: DIRECT LINE TO HEAVEN - 25 CENTS! “Father,” he said, “I have been all over Europe and in all the great cathedrals I visited, I’ve seen telephones exactly like this one but the price is always a thousand dollars. Why is it that this one is only 25 cents? The priest smiled and said, ‘Son, You’re in Ireland, it’s a local call!

The end of May is upon us and surprisingly it’s not death hot. Let’s remember to enjoy it and be thankful your graduation money is not being spent on your ride’s air conditioner just yet.

The BIG Event Music Festival at Firebird Raceway Friday May 21 Once in a while the masses find themselves in need of a core-pounding musical experience. This want spreads and the salvation comes forth in a giant music festival. Friday at 6pm, that need is answered with one of AZ’s biggest electronic dance music concerts. Around 5000 people contribute to this 10-hour ongoing dance party ending at 4am. Just enough time to go insane with the beats and get it all out of your system. Beer, wine and vodka bars will be scattered among 4 massive stages blasting genres of Trance, House/ Hard Dance, and Electro/DubStep/ Techno with the 4th stage being the Party Rocker VIP area. Some 40+ Djs include the likes of: Simon Patterson (UK), Matt Darey (London UK), Sandra Collins (LA), KLAAS (Germany), DJ Irene (LA), Morgan Page (L.A.), Craze (Miami), Kill the Noise (W. Hollywood), Le Castle Vania (Atlanta), HavocNDeed (AZ). Come what may, rain or shine the show will go on. Event tents, light shows, killer sounds systems, vendors, and a waterslide in case things get too hot and heavy for you. This will be an ongoing party, I advice pain free shoes and a picnic blanket you’re not worried about losing. Bring on the noise AZ. All ages event with a 21+ VIP area. www.myspace.com/thebigeventinfo Phone: 602.708.0323 602.396.9828 www.wantickets.com The BIG Event Carry On Pool Party Saturday May 22nd Following Friday’s music domination, the Theodore Hotel a.k.a The Mondrian will be hosting a continuation of the party at their infamous pool. Featuring Sandra Collins, Turner & Heit, Sir

Thomas, Michael James, & Lujan. 21+ welcome! 623-755-5453 The Shizz Prom at the Ice House Tavern May 22 It’s time to re-live your high school days as the older, braver, and hopefully wiser you. A local network of musicians and artists calling themselves “The Shizz,” has taken it upon themselves to connect us to the arts scene. With much success last year, the Shizz Prom has been brought back once again and even bears its very own “original” prom theme: Hollywood Red Carpet. Dress up in your prom best and let the paparazzi snap away the stars in your eyes. Who knows, maybe this time around you WILL be chosen prom king and queen. Yet if history repeats itself, don’t worry because this time around there will be enough alcohol to drown away those sorrows. Dj Mig50 has taken it upon himself to spin the night the right way with 80’s dance music to set that prom mood even more. Best part is, prom is at the Ice House; a popular dive bar with a welcoming atmosphere and the ability to watch people ice skate and fall in the adjoining ice rink through the Plexiglas. Because I think we all agree that re-living your prom in a hotel reception room may be taking it a bit too far. Let’s play pretend but still keep our sanity. 8pm-1am The Ice House Tavern (602) 244-1179 www.TheShizz.org

Really Weird News Stories You just can’t make this stuff up! World’s largest beaver dam found in Canada

“This is going to leave a Mark... or a John 3:16”

TORONTO – In northwestern Canada, Jean Thie, an ecologist, claims to have found the world’s largest beaver dam using Google satellite and NASA technology while conducting research unrelated to beaver.

Lord Jesus Christ hit by car 20-year-old Brittany Cantarella nearly ran over a 50-year-old man in Northampton Massachusetts recently. A quick check of his ID revealed that she had actually hit Lord Jesus Christ (yes, his legal name) who was minding his own business walking in a crosswalk. Brittany was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian and Mr. Christ was treated and released for minor facial injuries.

AZW Comments… Well, Thank Heaven he’s OK. Bad enough to hit someone, but what a bummer to nearly mow down the Lord Jesus Christ! We’d hate to think that the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse had been replaced by the 190 horses under Brittany’s hood! Now, the cool thing is Mr. LJC, after getting hit in the face, did “turn the other cheek” and forgive her (That’s the really bad part about having a Messiah-like name… you pretty much have to forgive just about anything). And speaking of holy monikers, how do we get a name like that? Lord knows, just changing your first name to “Lord” has got to be a real door opener! And another thing… What the hell was, Lord Jesus was doing walking around downtown Northampton in the first place? Was he on his way to church or just leaving a local wine bar? And what about his 12 great friends who should’ve warned him he was about to become road kill. Where were they? And finally, what does Lord Jesus Christ say when he’s about to get hit? “Oh My God!”, just seems a little redundant. Although, come to think of it…If you hit someone in a “Cross” walk, and they arise unharmed and then forgive you…and their name happens to Jesus Christ, we think you should either join the nearest cult or pitch Mel Gibson on your new movie idea.

Medical college recruits the homeless Newark – The Drake College, which trains medical and dental assistants, is being scrutinized and criticized for recruiting new talent in an unusual way. It seems the good folks at Drake have recruited about 5% of their student body from homeless shelters. OK, sure medical schools nationwide are busting at the seams with homeless students….Uh, but when 87% of your funding comes from federal financial aid programs, that’s not so great. Even worse, the motivational wizards at Drake award bi-weekly stipends of $350 to students who show up 80% of the time and get at least a “C” average.

The busy little beavers in this neck of the woods have evidently built the beaver version of Hoover Dam with a 2,788-foot structure built entirely by beaver, which, incidentally, are the country’s national symbol (Gotta love those Canadians!). The dam has been growing and restructuring the landscape since the 1970’s and evidently has been passed down among generations of hard-working beaver. The structure is remote and virtually inaccessible to man and beaver experts think it will continue to grow indefinitely.

AZW Comments: Wow! The Hoover Dam is only 1,244 feet long, which makes a beaver worth twice a Hoover! Damn…There goes the neighborhood! On the other hand, this makes perfect sense if you think about it. The beaver is so hard to find in Canada that it took all the resources of NASA and Google Earth to locate it. Once found, we see that it’s totally inaccessible to man and nobody can get to it. Finally, (A)…It’s been causing lots of problems since the 70’s, (B)… The beaver are working together and (C)… There’s no way to stop it! ‘Nuff said.

Critics fear they are recruiting the unqualified and leaving them holding the bag for inevitable bad student loans (Gee, D’ya think?). The school defends its position and just to show how much it cares for the financially underprivileged, raised its tuition this year 292% from $4,000 to $15,700. Obama’s administration is proposing tougher regulations. Oh goodie.

“Human beings are the only creatures that allow their children to come back home.”

-Bill Cosby

AZW Comments… Hey, just what we want to see when we wake up from the ethers of a route canal…A toothless, homeless dental assistant who missed 20% of their classes and had to be bribed to maintain a C average. And they say we have educational problems in this country! And another thing: Where does a homeless person go to do their “home” work? It seems a bit counterproductive doesn’t it? What’s next, hiring out-patients at the Betty Ford Clinic for bartending jobs?

Singer-songwriter and worldrenowned blues guitarist Robert Cray and his band bring their infectious live performance to the Valley’s newest amphitheater Sage Court at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25th. Sage Court is nestled within the lush grounds of the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa. With smoking hands and years of experience, few blues musicians have managed to accomplish as much crossover success as fivetime Grammy award winner Robert Cray. Since entering the pop mainstream in 1986 with “Smoking Gun” from his breakthrough album Strong Persuader, Cray’s soulful sound has bridged contemporary blues and traditional sounds with a succession of hits, including “Bad Influence,” “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark,” and “False Accusations.” He has released seventeen award winning multiplatinum albums and received 13 Grammy nominations. Tickets are $25, $35 and $75 (includes meet ‘n greet with Robert Cray) and can be purchased by calling 602-244-8444 or visiting www.sageconcerts.com. VIP concert and hotel packages are available. “STARING DOWN THE BRILLIANT DREAM” Live 2 CD Set from The Indigo Girls Available June 29th

SLASH UNVEILS HIS NEW SIGNATURE MODEL GIBSON GUITARS

Limited-Edition, Autographed “Appetite” Les Paul Guitars Available Now at Guitar Center Guitar Center (www.guitarcenter. com), the world’s largest musical instrument retailer, along with Gibson Custom Shop guitars, have announced the new Gibson Custom “Appetite” Les Paul Guitar, a limited-edition guitar made to honor Slash, and the same model that he used to record his recent charttopping solo album SLASH. Guitar Center will carry both the hand-aged and signed model along with the VOS (Vintage Original Spec) version.

Indigo Girls Amy Ray and Emily Saliers celebrate their long-standing passion for live performances on their upcoming release, Staring Down the Brilliant Dream on IG Recordings/Vanguard Records. Available on June 29th, the two-disc CD features 31 songs, each hand-selected by the Grammy-winning duo to capture the most memorable moments of their 2006-2009 shows.

The Custom Shop Slash “Appetite” Les Paul is crafted in the image of an original 1958-’60 Les Paul Standard, and available in strictly limited numbers. The guitar was crafted to honor Slash and his devotion to the Les Paul Standard guitar since 1987 with the debut of Guns N’ Roses’ album, Appetite for Destruction. All Custom Shop Slash “Appetite” Les Pauls come with a lined hardshell case, a Certificate of Authenticity, an Owner’s Manual and adjustment literature, and a rare bonus of a deluxe vinyl LP edition of Guns N’ Roses’ Appetite for Destruction. The VOS model went on sale Friday, May 7th at 1pm EST, while the hand-aged and signed model will go on sale Friday, May 14th at 1pm EST. “This guitar plays and sounds very unique,” said Slash. “It is a beautiful piece of work.” Visit www.guitarcenter.com for more information.

The CD reflects the spontaneity of a typical Indigos concert and includes a mix of solo performances and other numbers backed by their full band, plus vocal collaborations with such guest artists as Brandi Carlile and Jill Hennessey. Staring Down the Brilliant Dream encapsulates the wide range of emotions that fill their shows with fire and wonder, from the warm, sing-along spirit of Saliers’ “Closer to Fine” to the political combustion of Ray’s “Go.”

With two decades and countless concerts behind them, it would be understandable if the duo now found it hard to distinguish one concert from the next. Instead, as this CD proves, they remain as engaged and present onstage as ever. For each track, Saliers and Ray have penned personal notes on how they wrote each song, what they remember about that specific show, and why - among the thousands to choose from - they value those particular performances so much. The girls also personally picked photos submitted by fans for a special commemorative book like package. Produced by The Indigo Girls and Brian Speiser, Staring Down The Dream is a brilliant reminder of all the concerts audiences were lucky to catch -- and consolation for the ones they missed..

Lady Jasmine Cigar Diva KEEP A JOURNAL Set aside some time to keep notes on what kind of impression each cigar experience leaves you. This will factor in appearance, taste, construction, flavor and cost, among other things. Developing your own opinions and tastes is the key to this assignment my dear. You’ll want to develop your ability to determine which flavors and tastes are present in a cigar. A journal will allow you to remember your favorites while giving you some talking points when you meet with fellow cigar enthusiasts. It’s a process, but a pretty fun one once you start getting involved. There is plenty to be learned, but it’s a wonderful way to connect with others and learn about an industry that has been a part of many global cultures for a long time.

BRYAN’S BARBECUE

The Modern Cowboy “Brands” a Mark in Cave Creek In April of 2009, an American legend was added to Western history…Bryan Dooley, a chef with a passion for Barbecue and the enduring feel for the preservation of the old west but with a brand of his new west style. The life of the chef and the life of the cowboy are very similar - it’s a hard one with two roundups. For the cowboy it was the annual spring and fall drives. For the chef it’s lunch and dinner, serving a packed house of hungry friends, cuing up for some of the best barbecue that will drive even the tamest wild. The enticing aroma of pecan wood wafts through the air and you know you in for a great meal at Bryan’s Barbecue. Chef/Owner Bryan Dooley and his wife Donna rode into town with the secret recipe to successful barbecue. Take a heaping helping from your CIA, NY training, add it to 13 years of experience at the Fairmont Resort in Scottsdale, mix in your business knowledge and top it off with an enormous serving of down home friendship. Chef Bryan Dooley is no stranger to the art of good barbecue. “My Grandmother would be in the kitchen creating her signature barbecue sauce

GOTO! CAVE CREEK & CAREFREE SECTION

with a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Those were great days, and my ‘Award Winning’ recipes are a result of what she taught me – simple, bold flavors, lightly sauced so the meat stands out.” Dooley remembers, “ We wanted to fit the cowboy west into the feel of Cave Creek but with a clean modern look – we like to call it “clean cowboy”. Much if the atmosphere and style inside is the work of Bryan and Donna, form the more modern feel of the seating to the acid washed metal walls and huge round wood center table. On any night you can watch old black and white Cowboy movies on a big screen, pull the guitar off the wall and play a few tunes. Bryan has been known to play a few for the crowds himself.

The Barbecue Goodness… From the moment you come through the door the smells from the smoker beckon you in to the best barbecue in Arizona. Your mouth will start to water at the thought of half slab Pork Ribs, Beef Brisket, Barbecue Chicken, Pulled Pork and even Vegetarian ‘Pulled Squash’. Be sure to ask for the side of a Fried Egg on the Squash, you will want the whole experience! Try the sides too like Romaine Ribs and vinaigrette. Everything has Dooley take from Bryan’s own Baked Potato Salad, Olive Coleslaw and ‘SixPack’ Cowboy Beans (a six-pack of beer in every batch) to his homemade Ice Cream Sandwich or Sarsaparilla Float.

For the Daring… The cool taste of the romaine lettuce is a great escape after you have tried the famous ‘Firebird Chicken’. After trying this addicting heat of the orange-honey, habanero glazed chicken your will need something because it may feel like your socks are smokin’ in a good way! Legends were born in the old west, and Bryan’s Barbecue is one for the history books. Bryan’s Barbecue, located at 6130 E. Cave Creek Road in Cave Creek, AZ.
