Plus New Aquarium with 75 Exhibits Animal of the Week With a name like zebra shark, you might expect those animals to have stripes! Actually, zebra sharks are named for the appearance of their young, which are brown with white stripes. Adult zebra sharks look very different from their namesake; they are mostly tan with brown spots--no stripes at all! Zebra sharks may grow to 10 feet or more and have a distinctively long tail. See the zebra and other species of shark across from the Wildlife World Aquarium stingray touch tank.

Bet You Didn’t Know! by Stan Robinson

Silver Screen Scoop! By Joseph J. Airdo Josh Hutcherson (“Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D”) is reportedly a favorite to portray Peter Parker in director Marc Webb’s “Spider-Man” reboot. However, Jamie Bell (“The Chumscrubber”), Andrew Garfield (“The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus”), Alden Ehrenreich (“Tetro”) and Frank Dillane (“Harry Potter and the HalfBlood Prince”) have also made the shortlist of candidates up for the role. In other superhero news, James McAvoy (“Wanted”) has been cast as a young Charles Xavier in “X-Men: First Class,” Dominic Cooper (“Mamma Mia”) is set to play Tony “Iron Man” Stark’s father in “The First Avenger: Captain America” and Michael Bay (“Transformers”) will produce a liveaction reboot of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” franchise. Joseph J. Airdo’s movie reviews and articles are available at Examiner.com/ Phoenix in the Arts & Entertainment section.

“Splice”, a sci-fi thriller with a ‘slice of reality’ Review/Interview by Stan Robinson In “Splice”, two scientists cross the line of legal and ethical boundaries when they move forward with the next step in their research, combining human and animal DNA! It’s a familiar theme in sci-fi thrillers, and the writer/director AZWeeklyMagazine.com

directed by Nicole Holofcener. Sony Pictures Classics release. Rated R for language, some sexual content and nudity. Runtime: 90 minutes.

“Please Give”, examines the true meaning of giving Review by Stan Robinson

The earliest animated film ever made was ‘Humorous Phases of Funny Faces’ (1906) by newspaper cartoonist J. Stuart Blackton. In the film, a live-action hand reaches up to the blackboard and sketches a man, beside him a sketch of a lady appears, and the two begin to interact!!

“War of the Worlds” Starring Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, and Directed by Steven Spielberg! This retelling of the 1953 classic film adaptation of the H.G. Wells story of the invasion of Earth by Martians follows one family’s fight for survival. For more on these and other DVD’s & Blu-Ray releases, visit www. ScreenScene.org!

based his story on a real life experiment at MIT. “By the time I started shooting the film, some of the things that were going on in the real world were quite similar to what is actually in the movie!” say’s Vincenzo Natali.

In New York City, a husband and wife clash with the granddaughters of the elderly woman who lives in an apartment the couple owns, which is next to theirs. When the elderly woman passes on, the couple has plans of enlarging their apartment by combining the two apartments into one. At a dinner party in honor of the elderly woman, the revelation of feelings, motivations, and the purging of hidden agendas come to the surface. As expected with any film by writer/ director Nicole Holofcener, “Please Give” should not be missed, and surely makes one examine the dual aspect of ‘giving’ and ‘receiving’… My full review is available at www.ScreenScene.org “Please Give” starring Rebecca Hall, Elizabeth Keener, Elise Ivy, Catherine Keener, Josh Pais, Sarah Steele, Ann Morgan Guilbert, Amanda Peet, and Oliver Platt. “Mother and Child”, a poignant slice of life and rediscovery Review by Stan Robinson

This very moving drama centers around three women: A 50-year-old health care professional (Annette Bening), the daughter she gave up for adoption 35 years ago and now a successful lawyer (Naomi Watts), and an African American woman (Kerry Washington) who wants to adopt a child of her own. Presented in the allegory style of the Oscar® winning movie ‘Crash’ (2005), where independent stories are destined to have their characters’ lives become interrelated, the lives of the three women are set on a course of culmination. Is it destiny, fate, or simply, a fact of life… My full review is available at www.ScreenScene.org “Mother and Child” starring Alexandria M. Salling, Connor Kramme, Annette Bening, Eileen Ryan, Samuel L. Jackson, Naomi Watts, Cherry Jones, Kerry Washington, and David Ramsey. Written and directed by Rodrigo Garcia. Sony Pictures Classics release. Rated R for sexuality, brief nudity, and language. Runtime: 125 minutes.

You Bet Your Anus That’s a Human Centipede Review by Randy Montgomery How does one review a movie such as Dutch director Tom Six’s The Human Centipede (The First Sequence)? Roger Ebert refused to give it a grade and audiences at test screenings walked out. Having managed to sit through the entire film warrants a review, seeing a show there is much buzz around the globe about this one. A Mercedes-driving, well-to-do surgeon welcomes two lost American girls into his home to use the phone. Little do these dingbats realize that they are about to be drugged and used in a horrific experiment. The term “dingbats” is used correctly, as they get lost on a dark road in the forest while looking for a NIGHTCLUB in Germany. They get out (in the rain) and wander through the bushes, instead of heading back the way they came. They find the home of Doctor Heiter (the creepy Dieter Laser). The doctor has successfully connected three dogs and made them into a centipede. Now, he wants to try the process on humans; the two girls and a loud and vocal Japanese man. To complete the process, ligaments in their knees are slashed and mouths are attached to the anus of the person in front of them. Surprisingly, the film is not overly graphic, or gory. Six uses the element of suspense and the idea of what’s not shown on screen to upset his viewers.

Those that seek out and watch The Human Centipede certainly will not be grossed out or offended. Fans of the genre will be pleasantly surprised and those that wander in may actually enjoy it as well. Just do not expect it to be playing at your local multiplex anytime soon. Oh, and if you are wondering, there is a followup in the works! Get the free mobile app at

A suave and good-looking Indian man named “J” (heartthrob Hrithik Rosahn) becomes involved with and hunted by a corrupt casino owner when he tries to take the love of his life, and Spanish-speaking immigrant Natasha (Barbara Mori) away from the owner’s abusive son. The film features non-stop action, drama, romance and speaker thumping music. It’s a rush and a thrill ride! While featuring a very “Hollywood” plot, the delivery is all “Bollywood.” We’ll ignore the fact that New Mexico is not next to Las Vegas (a minor flaw in the film). Kites landed in the top ten at the American box office opening weekend, the first time a Bollywood film had ever accomplished that feat. It earned its spot and should do even better in the coming weeks, where a whole new set of moviegoers will be turned on to the best India has to offer. As of printing, Kites: The Remix was playing exclusively at the Cinemark 16 at Mesa Riverview in Mesa. Visit www. cinemark.com for up-to-date show times.

Bollywood Send Us Their Kites By Randy Montgomery India produces more films and sells more movie tickets than any other country in the world. The largest segment of films comes from Bollywood, centered in Mumbai, where Hindi-language films are produced. Commonly known for their mix of genres, extravagant musical numbers and drop-dead gorgeous stars, Bollywood films are “experienced,” not “watched.” Here in the U.S. and Arizona locally, Bollywood films have a huge following. Often so long in running time, an intermission is scheduled and social hour takes place during the 15-20 minute break. If you haven’t seen a Bollywood film, or think they are not relatable, Producer Brett Ratner has taken Director Anurag Basu’s film Kites and made Bollywood accessible to American audiences.

• Eat Food - meaning real food and not something a food scientist has developed • Eat Like Your Great-Grandmother Used to Eat - avoid the complicated stuff, eat simple like she did • Eat Food That Can Eventually Rot guess what, no preservatives. GAME! HOT HITTING HAREN

The D-backs have an extra offensive weapon every fifth day. By Jordan Megenhardt The D-backs have had their share of great hitting pitchers. Micah Owings won a Silver Slugger Award after a stellar 2007 season at the plate. Carrying on that torch, Dan Haren is also having a fair amount of success with the bat. As of May 11, Haren was in the midst of a six-game hitting streak, which is tied for the fourth-longest streak for a pitcher in the last 30 years. Haren has always been able to hold his ground in the batter’s box. While at Pepperdine University, he was frequently used as a hitter on days he wasn’t pitching. In 2001, his final year at college, Haren accumulated 224 at-bats and maintained a .308 batting average while driving in 47 runs on 69 hits. Two years later, on June 30, 2003, he appeared in his first Major League

game against a San Francisco Giants team that included Barry Bonds and Jason Schmidt. Bonds went 0-3 at the plate that day against Haren. In Haren’s first Major League at-bat that night, he faced Schmidt and lined the first pitch he saw into right field for a double. Those were no small feats on either side of the ball. Schmidt was in the prime of his career at the time, finishing an All-Star 2003 season with a 17-5 record, 2.34 ERA and 208 strikeouts. Bonds was in the midst of his record-breaking 73 homer season while in route to the NL MVP award. Haren’s hitting ability is clearly nothing new but with the rampant success he has had on the mound while in a D-backs uniform, it may often go overlooked. On April 20, in a game against his former team, the St Louis Cardinals, Haren’s bat had a coming out party. He went 4-4 with an RBI. “We always knew he could hit,” Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols said. “He is an awesome hitter, just incredible!” Starting with the April 20 game and extending through May 1, Haren amassed nine hits in 12 at-bats. He is only the second pitcher to accomplish that feat since the inception of the DH in 1973. The first was former D-backs hurler Livan Hernandez.

Photography: Jordan Megenhardt Dan Haren had a 4-for-4 game with an RBI in a 9-7 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on April 20.

During his time in Arizona, Haren has continually proven his ability within the batter’s box and has been relied upon more frequently as a pinch hitter. In the 10th inning of a game in Colorado on April 28, Haren was called to pinch-hit for reliever Bob Howry. He sent a ground ball screaming up the middle of the diamond into the outfield for a single. Greg Schulte called the play during the D-backs’ radio broadcast with an insightful analysis of Haren’s attitude in the box, “Haren has a simple approach at the plate: See ball, hit ball hard.”

BEER! Summer Travel Series: San Diego Summer is rapidly approaching, we have had our first 100 degree day and more are on their way. If you are like the typical Valley resident, thoughts are turning to how to cool off during June, July and August. Typically, we prefer to stock our fridge with great beer, shut all the blinds and hide from the heat for three months. It appears that not everybody likes that method of surviving the heat. Some of you like to get out of Phoenix for a few days or weeks. The only problem is figuring out where to go, and where are you going to find great beer when you get there. Over the next three weeks, we are going to look at three great summer destinations and give you some idea how to make a little beer holiday out of it. San Diego, which bills itself as “America’s Finest City”, certainly has some of America’s finest beer. Known for fine breweries and great beer bars, and average high tempera-

tures around 77 in the summer, there is plenty to do for a craft beer fan. All of San Diego County is a tourist hot spot in the summer, and good beer is available everywhere. Assuming you make the drive in on Interstate 8, just as you leave the Cleveland National Forest, you will come upon the town of Alpine, and just south of the Interstate in Alpine, you will find Alpine Brewing. These guys make a variety of great beers, but are renowned for their IPAs. And why not? Year round selections include Pure Hoppiness and Duet, but if you can find Exponential Hoppiness, Nelson (a golden Rye IPA featuring the Nelson Sauvin hop out of New Zealand) or O’Brien’s IPA, you have a real treat. Pick up a couple of growlers for your room. Once settled in you can find great breweries everywhere. Head up to the North County area in San Marcos to check out Port Brewing and The Lost Abbey. A quick drive north on the Escondido Freeway and then west on Ronald Packard to San Marcos will get you to the brewery located just off the Packard Parkway. Your best bet is to go Friday after 4:00 PM or Saturday and Sunday

afternoon. Tours are informal and last about 20 minutes, but the tasting room is a great place to hang out, the staff are friendly and the beer is some of the best available. Say hello to Terri and Sage who help staff the tasting room. After enjoying some fine beer and the functional beauty of the brewery, take a trip to Escondido and visit the Stone World Bistro for a bite to eat. In addition to fine beers brewed in the attached brewery, you will find many guest taps, outstanding food and an outdoor garden that is very relaxing. With a menu of world inspired cuisine featuring locally grown small farm ingredients, you can enjoy a nice meal either inside, on the open air patio or in the one acre organic beer garden.

Alesmith Brewery is located just north of Miramar Road between the 805 and the 15. For the past 15 years this tiny brewery has put out a variety of handcrafted artisan ales. With an award-winning head brewer and a dedicated staff, it’s no wonder that every beer from them is a gem. Make time on either Friday or Saturday afternoon to stop in and see what they have to offer. From Alesmith, head east on Miramar across the 15 and you will be in the area of one of the best kept secrets in San Diego beer, Ballast Point Brewery. Actually, all the folks in San Diego know what a great brewery Ballast Point is, but sometimes they get lost amongst all the celebrity brewers that come from California. But recently being named Small Brewery of the Year at the World Beer Cup should change all that, sounds like they may be approaching the realm of celebrity brewers. You can’t go wrong with any of their beers, the Calico Amber, Wahoo Wheat and Big Eye IPA are all particularly good, but keep any eye out for some of their specialty beers such as Sculpin, Dorado or Victory at Sea. Even well kept secrets have well kept secrets, and Ballast Point’s is their Homebrew Mart. Located on Continued on Page 29...

... continued from Page 28 Linda Vista, not far from Hotel Circle, the front of this store is a typical home brewing supply store, but in the back is a small tasting area where you can sample many of the great beers that Ballast Point puts out. There are many other fine breweries in San Diego, but the county also is home to some of the finest beer bars in the state. Starting in the downtown area, you can find The Yard House and right next door to that is The Local Eatery. The Local is everything you would expect in a neighborhood watering hole, including great beer. Look for some rarities from Port Brewing and The Lost Abbey as well as other breweries on tap here. A little further away, in the Gaslight District is Downtown Johnny Brown’s. With 18 taps of craft beer, the occasional cask conditioned special and good food, this is a can’t miss spot.

As you venture a little out of the downtown, there are many more beer bars. Try Hamilton’s off of 30th

Street. The oldest beer and wine license in the county and a certain pride in being descended from Sparky’s which they describe as a “beloved dive bar” gives you an idea right away what you are dealing with. Plenty of taps and even more bottled beers on their menu. They even have a tab on their web site for their juke box. Continuing north on 30th Street you come across The Linkery and The Toronado San Diego. Named after the famous beer bar in San Francisco, The Toronado does its northern sister bar proud. Nothing but specialty beers, a bottle list to die for and an appealing food menu will make this stop a memorable one. Go a little further north and a little bit west and Continued on Page 31...

BEER HUMOR A cop is staking out a bar for drunk drivers. At closing time, he sees a guy stumble out of the bar carrying a beer. He trips on the curb, and fumbles for his keys for five minutes. When he finally gets in, it takes him another five minutes to get the key in the ignition. Meanwhile, everybody else leaves the bar and drives off. When he finally pulls away, the cop is waiting for him, pulls him over, and gives him a Breathalyzer test. The test shows he has a blood alcohol level of 0.0. The cop says, “How is this possible?” The guy says,”Tonight I’m the designated decoy.”

Whoever said “size doesn’t matter” must have had SunUp Brewery in mind. Located in central Phoenix, this small brewery is serving up some huge craft beers. You may want to visit soon to experience this quaint brewery, since they’re in the process of expanding. An expansion is necessary; to accommodate their growing patronage and the increased beer production... not to mention the awards their beers have won, and, without a doubt, will continue to win. Formerly known as Sonora Brewing, this small, historical structure actually consists of two brick homes with a large covered patio. Together they make up a delightful, warm, cozy, intimate atmosphere. Serving beers of this caliber, it would only be fitting for the quality of the food to follow suit. SunUp does not disappoint. Some

Under the direction of Uwe Boer, who many believe is one of Arizona’s best and most talented brewmasters, SunUp’s craft beers continue to gain both recognition and popularity. When you speak with Uwe, you get a sense of his passion for the craft of beer-making and his knowledge of all things beer. This is someone who LOVES what he does. This is expressed in his grueling hours and in the great beers he produces. Although contrary to Uwe’s heritage, SunUp does not currently brew lagers, the quality of his ales is amazing. As an example, the new Tripel IPA, using only two-row malt, has achieved one of the most balanced high ABV IPA’s currently brewed. They also brew a great Dubel IPA as well as the Trooper. If you’re not an IPA fan, try the Light Rail Cream Ale, or the Armadillo Brown. These are just a few of the great brews produced by SunUp. I hear, although I have yet to try it, that the traditional Root Beer is worth the trip alone. SunUp is located at 322 E. Camelback Rd, Phoenix.

How do you cope with a divorce you didn’t want? Some guys would go on a drinking binge, practice their vows of poverty or date a stripper. Not Tucson’s Kevin Cotter. Upon finding his ex-wife had left him with nothing more than her old wedding dress as a remembrance, he decided to found the web site, “MyExWifesWeddingDress.com. The satirical site shows dozens and dozens of ways to recycle the wedding dress, which to Cotter stands as a symbol of the waste that can sometimes happen during the bliss of the wedding experience. The site shows Cotter in one creative and humorous situation after another with the infamous dress being used with more new household uses than a can of WD-40. AZW Comments: Finally, a web site that we can use! No more stumbling over those pesky wedding dresses from all your past wives in the middle of the night. No more traumatic stress episodes every time some fool plays Billy Idol’s “White Wedding” on the radio. Yes, its time to strike fear into the heart of the entire wedding industry by an attack on its greatest symbol…That damned dress! Our favorite uses so far: The coffee filter, the automotive gas cap, doggie chew toy, protective BBQ grill cover, ball washer, pasta strainer, kitty litter box liner, wedding piñata, Christmas Tree skirt and even a new pair of pants for MC Hammer. While his newfound success on the web has fellow jilted hubbies bowing in post-divorce hero worship, we think it would be ever so smart to start getting some cash out of these ideas quick. It is unlikely that his creativity will invoke a “Welcome Back Cotter” campaign from the ex, and we sense if he gets the wrong judge in the divorce trial, he may be using it as a homeless shelter on the site soon. Good Luck Dude!

CLUB! ‘DENIM AND DIAMONDS’ READY TO DAZZLE Dream Team Agreement To Revive Valley Retail Center, East Mesa Nightclub Proposal It was to be known as Hurricane Bay Nightclub, help revitalize a key retail property in East Mesa and provide a new entertainment option for area residents. But after a controversial approval by the Mesa City Council in Spring 2008, the onset of the economic recession tabled plans for the abandoned grocery store near Power Road and Main Street. That’s all about to change. Pollack Investments and Graham Brothers Entertainment announced an agreement that will revive plans for the nightclub. Owners of Tempe’s Graham Central Station and over a dozen other clubs around the country, Graham Brothers Entertainment will be the new owners and operators of “Denim & Diamonds.” It will open Fall 2010. Denim & Diamonds Mesa will have two clubs under one roof. An 11,500 square foot country

western club and a Live Venue Room. The latter will house national and local acts as well as a Texas Country artists series. Nearly $1 million will be invested to turn the project into a reality and create some 60 new jobs. Rather than boarded up space, Pollack said Denim & Diamonds will transform the property into a vibrant retail space for the City of Mesa. Pollack Investments owns approximately 3 million square feet of commercial space in Arizona, much of it in the East Valley. He’s a well-known turnaround artist but said this property in particular has been a challenge. In addition to the space Denim & Diamonds will occupy, Pollack also said agreements are in place for additional tenants that, combined, will now mean an approximately 100,000 square foot center will be nearly ninety five percent occupied. “Graham Brothers Entertainment is a coup for the community, this part of the city and those concerned with injecting new energy and retail revenues into Mesa,” Pollack said. “We believe this part of the Valley is crying out for an entertainment option like Denim & Diamonds and that we’ll attract customers from across the East Valley and Pinal County,” Roger Gearhart said.

LIVE! SECTION THE POWER OF SHOCK VALUE IN MUSIC Musicians have a long track record of using shock value to elevate interest in music. Elvis swung his hips, Ozzy bit the head off a bat, Madonna sang about her nonexistent virginity and Marilyn Manson named himself after a convicted killer. But how much has shock value changed since the days when Osbourne supposedly bit the bat? And what would have happened if the Internet had been around? The story is something of an urban legend, and that’s part of its power, says Tavia Nyong’o, a professor of performance studies at New York University. No one had cameras in their phones back then, so the shock came from repeating the story. “Did you hear? Ozzy Osbourne bit the head off a bat!”

48

Pop musicians have always played with shock value, and Internet videos give them a new way to deploy it. Three controversial videos — “Tele-

phone” by Lady Gaga, “Born Free” by M.I.A. and Erykah Badu’s “Window Seat” — were recently banned or censored by MTV and YouTube, but they’re still easily accessible online. Cultural critic Ronda Penrice says she sees a difference between the way musicians used shock value in the ‘80s and how they use it today. It used to be much harder to find the kinky images that used to be a shortcut to shock. Now, you just have to Google it. It’s also easier to access cutting-edge avant-garde work — for example, the video by Matt & Kim that inspired Badu’s vision for “Window Seat.” The video begins innocently enough, with Badu strolling through Dallas. As it progresses,

she begins removing her clothes, and by the time she’s fully naked, she appears to get shot right where John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Badu was later charged with disorderly conduct by Dallas police and fined $500 for her public display. Nyong’o says the shock of the singer’s nudity was amplified by her location in Dealey Plaza, a sort of

hallowed ground and a site of profound shock in American political history, and that’s what made it inspired. “Shock itself is part of our daily life — the risk of a shock, terrorist attack or natural disaster,” he says. Either way you look at it, good or bad, the power of shock value in music simply cannot be denied.

The composition of a cigar is pretty simple. The core of a cigar which lends all of its taste is the filler. The binder, composed of coarse tobacco, holds everything together like the corset of a woman, while the wrapper is the outer layer composed of silky leaves, the equivalent of a woman’s dress. The quality of a cigar is often noted in the look of the head or cap. This is the part that you will need to cut off in order to smoke it. A basic rule of thumb is the bigger the ring size, the cooler the cigar smoke will be. It’s often recommended that inexperienced cigar smokers start with smaller size cigars to build up the smoking skill before attacking the bigger selections. Patience darling. Patience.
