Arizona’s Largest

Collection of Exotic Animals

Plus New Aquarium with 75 Exhibits Animal of the Week A pair of baby tigers less than one month old are now on display at the Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium baby animal nursery. Despite 2010 being the year of the Tiger, the birth of two Bengal (Indian) tiger cubs comes at a time when pressure on wild populations persists. All subspecies of tiger are endangered with poaching and habitat loss as the two most significant threats to tiger survival. One hundred years ago, there were as many as 9 species of tiger spread throughout Asia and Indonesia with a population numbering in the tens of thousands. Recent surveys suggest that fewer than 3000 tigers (representing the 5 or 6 subspecies left) remain in fragmented areas that measure a mere 7% of their original home ranges. These cubs are on display from 9a.m. to 6p.m. everyday at the indoor climate controlled baby animal nursery, one of 6 indoor exhibit buildings at Wildlife World.

And Jaden Smith has even more screen appeal and chemistry since starring with his father Will Smith in ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’ (2006). With the original movies a distant memory, ‘The Karate Kid’ with the backdrop of Beijing, is definitely worth a matinee visit by the whole family.

By Joseph J. Airdo Despite less than stellar box office receipts and even worse reviews, New Line Cinema has shown interest in forging ahead with a third featurelength “Sex and the City” film. However, if produced, the movie would be a prequel about Carrie Bradshaw’s high school years. Director Brett Ratner and screenwriter Melisa Wallack are pairing up to create a “Snow White” motion picture for Relativity Media. The project is expected to mirror the edgy tone of the Grimm Brothers’ original folk tale, in which the dwarfs are robbers and a dragon rules the forest. Johnny Depp’s Capt. Jack Sparrow is set to get a sidekick in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” Stephen Graham, who previously appeared alongside Depp in last year’s “Public Enemies,” has joined the cast as Scram, a Machiavellian pirate. ‘The Karate Kid’, exhilarating fun with an awful lot of heart! Review by Stan Robinson

Don’t be quick to assume this is a retelling of the 1980’s classics, or watch them before going to see this latest version. It has been quite some time since I’ve viewed the previous movies, which is a very good aspect. So my approach was the proverbial AZWeeklyMagazine.com

“The Karate Kid” starring Jaden Smith, Jackie Chan, Taraji P. Henson, Wenwen Han, Rongguang Yu, and Zhensu Wu.

‘fresh eyes’. The story unfolds as a mother (Taraji P. Henson) makes the decision to accept the transfer offered by her employer to Beijing, China. A single mom after the passing of her husband, she has her hands full as her young son Dre (Jaden Smith) who is rebellious with repressed feelings of missing his father, school friends, and the familiarity of his U.S. neighborhood lifestyle, faces a brand new set of challenges. Dre’s adjustment to the culture and his new school is firmly put to the test when he becomes the target of the group of kids who are the bullies we all have commonly faced. With the martial arts aspect a common factor for kids growing up in China, Dre becomes the example by the leader and receives the ‘enlightening beating’ of his life. To his rescue is the quiet, withdrawn, and harboring deep personal issues, is Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), the maintenance handy man who’s job is the day-to-day tasks of apartment building repairs where Dre and his mother live. Dre learns there’s more to Mr. Han than what meets the eye as he helps him heal his bruised body. A bond forms as Dre, with help of Mr. Han, prepares for the ultimate challenge of facing the bully, once and for all. ‘Solitary Man’, alone with self examination as his only companion Review by Stan Robinson

Ben loves his family almost as much as he loves himself. That is the fate of Ben Kalmen (Michael Douglas), who was once a successful car dealership owner with multiple dealerships. Success came early in his adult life. He was married with a family and

Joining the divorced Ben later in life, we watch as he experiences the “I get it” moment and decides to rectify his life on all level before he looses everything, including himself. Michael Douglas is in top form as Ben. Susan Sarandon as his ex-wife who still loves him but will not recommit until he becomes firmly re-grounded in reality, delivers an intuitive performance as a ‘reflective mirror’ on who he really is, not his own perception. And Danny DeVito, Michael Douglas’ real-life long time friend, is mesmerizing as Ben’s life long friend who gently but ever so strongly, is a motivating catalyst for Ben to face the reality of how those around him view his life, that of a ‘Solitary Man’ who has lost his way in his own ‘pseudo reality’, with an extremely painful uphill path to right his life… “Solitary Man” starring Michael Douglas, Susan Sarandon, Danny DeVito, Mary-Louise Parker, Jenna Fischer, Imogen Poots, Jesse Eisenberg, and Richard Schiff. The Manic Organic You have to start somewhere, right? Well let me tell you about my experience in changing my diet. That’s right, I haven’t always been a clean eater (and I don’t mean washing before meals - more on that some other time). I once did eat meals on the run, processed and very unnatural types of foods. Never gave it much thought.

But I did see the light and began eating lots of fruits, veggies and cut-out the fastfood joints. I don’t drink any “soft drinks” (they aren’t soft and certainly not good for you) and make an effort to buy organic whenever I can. This includes meats, vegetables, milk and juices. So what happened to me? I crave fruits now, and eat salads anytime I can and usually go back for seconds, and thirds. I crave the GOOD food because that is what I am now used to putting into my body. So you have to start somewhere and soon you will too will crave the good stuff. Food that is. - MO

MOMENTS GAME! HISTORICAL Lakers vs. Celtics

There have been 61 Finals in the history of the NBA and the Celtics and the Lakers have collectively participated in 47 of them. The 2008 Finals marks the 11th meeting between the franchises, with the Celtics owning an 8-2 record in the previous 10. Here are just a few of many memorable Celtics-Lakers moments in NBA Finals history.

Elgin Rocks the Garden for 61 April 14, 1962 Game 5: Lakers 126, Celtics 121 “Elgin Baylor was just a machine,” said Satch Sanders and he should know after watching Baylor set a Finals single-game scoring record of 61, surpassing Bob Pettit’s previous mark of 50 five years earlier. Sanders, one of the premier defensive forwards, fouled out trying to contain Baylor, who hit 22 of 46 field goals and

grabbed 22 boards for good measure. “He only had 32 off me,” said Sanders. “I made sure I got out of there. I fouled out and then he just kept on. Any of our forwards were trying to contain him. We all took our turn, but there was no stopping him.” Forty six years later, Baylor’s Finals record of 61 still stands. Gerald Henderson Steal vs. Lakers May 31, 1984 Game 2: Celtics 124, Lakers 121 (OT) It was desperation time at the Garden as the Celtics trailed 113-111 with 18 seconds remaining and the prospect of heading to Los Angeles down 0-2 appearing very much real. With Magic Johnson inbounding the ball to James Worthy and the Lakers looking to run out the clock, it was Gerald Henderson who provided the Garden heroics. Henderson swooped in, picked off Worthy’s soft crosscourt pass to Byron Scott and easily drove in for the layup, tying the game and forcing overtime.

Bird couldn’t have been happier. “I love to play in the heat,” said Bird. “I just run faster, create my own wind.” Bird lit up the Lakers to the tune of 34 points on 15 for 20 shooting as the Celtics won, 121-103. It was a collective effort as Dennis Johnson continued to snap out of his early series funk, scoring 22 points. “This is probably the best game we ever played,” said Johnson. “The Greatest Clutch Performance Against the Celtics” April 23, 1969 Game 1: Lakers 120, Celtics 118 Jerry West was more than determined to help the Lakers secure their first ever NBA title, especially against the Celtics, a team he and Elgin Baylor were 0-fer against in five previous Finals appearances. West took over Game 1, scoring 53 points (the third highest single-game Finals performance in NBA history) while dishing 10 assists. Not to be overlooked was John Havlicek’s 39 points in the Celtics’ 120-118 loss. Bill Russell called West’s performance, “the greatest clutch performance ever against the Celtics.” And added: “It wasn’t his 53 points that beat us, it was his 10 assists.”

DONTRELLE TO THE RESCUE The Detroit Tigers have traded standout pitcher Dontrelle Willis and cash to the Diamondbacks for Billy Buckner. Willis, highly regarded for his 22-7, 2.63 season for the Florida Marlins in 2005, brings an infectious smile and instant commercial success to a team much in much need of a kickstart. The Tigers acquired Willis, a twotime All-Star and a former 20-game winner, as part of the 2007 deal that included Miguel Cabrera. Willis is 1-2 with 33 strikeouts, 29 walks a 4.99 ERA in nine starts. He won three games in three seasons in Detroit, appearing in 24 games. “We are pleased to add Dontrelle to our pitching staff,” Arizona GM Josh Byrnes said in a statement. “He has shown he can overcome adversity, and we hope that he can help solidify our pitching staff.” Buckner, 26, was 0-3 with an 11.08 ERA in three starts for the Diamondbacks this season.

Summer Travel Series: San Francisco As we continue our Summer Travel series, I can’t help but think about how many great beer destinations there are out there and how we could spend lots of weeks talking about where to go to drink great beer. But, I digress…we are looking at locations that meet several criteria, not the least of which is somewhere for Arizonans to go to get out of our summer heat. Last week we looked at San Diego with their wonderful beaches and year round moderate temperatures…and we found some wonderful beer. This week we head up Interstate 5 to the city by the Bay, San Francisco. Of course, if you prefer the more romantic route, a cruise up the Pacific Coast Highway will get you there as well with much better scenery. Regardless, we are not here to talk about the trip, but about the destination. San Francisco, from Gold Rush times until Prohibition was the brewing center of the West Coast. Whether it was the malting houses on Fisherman’s Wharf or the

Another fine local beer bar is City Beer Store and Tasting Room. Get something to take home, but by all means, enjoy a few beers while you are there. It’s more central to the main hotel areas, situated on Folsom, just a couple of blocks off Market. There is also a different vibe, and it can sometimes be a gathering place for the professional beer community in San Francisco after their workday is over. You never know what you will find on draft, so enjoy.

hop fields in the North and East Bay, beer was intertwined with San Francisco’s history. My first stop in San Francisco is always the Toronado. This is the original and it looks it. Located at Haight and Fillmore, it is found after a fairly long climb up one of San Francisco’s infamous hills…take my advice and get a cab or bus to get there. Once inside, you will be greeted by approximately fifty taps, all flowing with fantastic craft beer or some high end specialty import. Last time I was there, there were no less than four of the highly sought

after Russian River beers on tap, as well as other local gems like Moonlight Brewing, Marin and Drake’s. There will also be plenty of beers from places that we in Arizona are more familiar with like Anderson Valley, Bear Republic and North Coast Brewing. Take your time and enjoy, this is the place that celebrated its 20th anniversary with beers brewed especially for the event by brewers like Vinnie Cirluzo and Tomme Arthur. Examine the lists carefully and choose wisely, you will never get through all the goodies you will find here.

There are some fun breweries in the area, most with pubs attached so you can eat while you drink. 21st Amendment Brewery celebrates the repeal of Prohibition daily at their restaurant. In keeping with that theme, enjoy the Brew Free or Die IPA or the Hell or High Watermelon Wheat Ale. A great variety of classic pub food prepared in some interesting ways provides a complete experience at 21st Amendment. Before the 21st Amendment was passed, speakeasy bars were rampant across America. These small clubs that were carefully guarded quenched the thirst of Americans for the almost fourteen years that we were, legally anyway, a dry country. Not far from Continued on Page 29...

who know the secret password (don’t tell anyone I told you, but it’s “good beer”) there is always something special on tap. Just outside of the city lies an assortment of great beer in any direction.

If you are heading north across the Golden Gate Bridge, a stop in Novato will take you to Moylan’s. Moylan’s head brewer Denise Jones is con-

sidered one of the finest brewers in California and her beers are crafted so well they leave you wanting more. Whether you order the hop bomb they call Hopsickle or one of the more Continued on Page 31...

traditional Irish or English style beers, be sure to try the food as well. You can also stop at their sister brewery, Marin Brewing in Larkspur, south of Novato. This is a brewery that does fruit beers very well, try the Blueberry Ale; the natural blueberry flavors are just enough to give you the taste without overwhelming the taste buds. If hops are your thing, go for the White Knuckle Double IPA. It won’t take long to figure out where they got the name from. Pyramid Brewing Company has two Alehouses located to the west of the city, one in Berkeley and one in Walnut Creek. Treat yourself to one of the favorites available here, or explore some of the beers that are only available at the Alehouses. If you’re looking for a brewery tour, the Berkeley Alehouse is also home to one of Pyramid’s two

This is just a small bit of the great beer available in and around San Francisco. Check out Beach Chalet Brewery, Anchor Brewing, Iron Springs and Magnolia as well. Other great beer bars include The Alembic, The Bistro

and British Bankers Club. There are, of course, many more great places in a town with a beer tradition as rich as San Francisco’s. And we haven’t even touched on wine country yet. Look for that in the fall, just before many people are making trips to Napa and Sonoma. As always, you can pinpoint locations by checking out www.beermapping.com.

Once upon a time God went missing for 7 days. Eventually, Michael the archangel found him and inquired, “Where were you?”. God sighed a deep sigh of satisfaction and proudly pointed downwards through the clouds; “Look son, look what I’m making”. Michael looked puzzled and said, “What is it?” God replied, “It’s another planet but I’m putting LIFE on it. I’ve named it Earth and there’s going to be a balance between everything on it. For example, there’s North America and South America. North America is going to be rich and South America is going to be poor, and the narrow bit joining them - that’s going to be a hot spot. Now look over here. I’ve put a continent of Whites in the north and another one of Blacks in the south. And then Michael said, “And what’s that green dot there?” And God said “Ahhh that’s the Emerald Isle - that’s a very special place. That’s going to be the most glorious spot on earth; Beautiful mountains, lakes, rivers, streams, and an exquisite coast line. These people here are going to be great craic and they’re going to be found traveling the world. They’ll be playwrights and poets and singers and songwriters. And I’m going to give them this black liquid which they’re going to go mad on and for which people will come from the far corners of the Earth to imbibe. Michael gasped in admiration but then seeming startled proclaimed: “Hold on a second, what about the BALANCE, you said there was going to be a balance.. God replied wisely, “Wait until you see the neighbors I’m going to give them”.

The Night Owl BY MARIA TOURTCHANINOVA

Bloomn’ Beerfest Saturday 12th Now I know thoughts of Ireland may consist of Leprechauns, Guinness, and all things green but frankly you’re not giving it enough credit. This Saturday is your chance to find out why. Ireland was also the setting to Irish author James Joyce’s world famous novel Ulysses. Here is what I am talking about, on June 16, 1904 main character Leopold Bloom goes through the events of his day as well as the pubs. These adventures have become such an icon that every year the Irish as well as fans all over the world celebrate Bloomsday. The Irish Cultural Center has clued us in by hosting their 4th annual Bloomn’ Beerfest. Here you can indulge in specialty beers from the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild while enjoying live music from Trotters Wake and The Academy Fiddlers. Readings from Ulysses will remind you WHY you’re drinking all that beer and make you appreciate and hopefully read what the Modern Library named the #1 English-language book of the 20th century. Cheers! 7-11pm $25 presale or $35 at the gate. www.azirish.org Jack & Ginger Summer Series Pool Event Saturday 12th. Montelucia Resort and Spa will be playing host to the seasons first Jack & Ginger Pool Party. Grab your sun tan lotion and a favorite pair of floaties, we don’t want any accidents in the pool. I mean that kids! Now if you play basketball or think you play basketball you’re in luck - there’s a mini basketball

hoop. Even if you guys are barely pushing five feet it’s your big chance to dunk the ball like Amare. Too soon? That’s ok those playoff blues can be erased by a smooth Jack and Ginger ale or a number of other tasty cocktails. So choose wisely Indiana. Just a reminder, this happens to be one of the most gorgeous pools so dress accordingly, in other words, no t-shirts in the pool. 1pm-6pm Summer Concert Series at City North Saturday 12th. City North has started their concert series throughout selected summer Saturdays. The concerts take place on High Street, which is something like a “city” street, full of shops and cafes. The restaurant holding the promotion becomes an extension onto High Street. That way you are able to enjoy the menu as well as the free show. The kick off band The JJ’s will be performing Sat the 12th at Kona Grill. The JJ’s play an impressive live show featuring Motown, Funk and today’s hits. I have seen them before and can honestly say this is one of the most talented cover bands you will see. So make the effort to Map Quest your way there. www.citycenterofcitynorth.com

Got a hot event? Grand opening? Cool new promotion? Undiscovered gem? Please write to Maria at Nightowl@azweeklymagazine.com to possibly be featured here each week. Please include pictures when possible.

WTF IS GOING ON AT WHISKEY RIVER!

Whiskey River Saloon, a long time valley country western/top 40 watering hole has embarked on a bold promotional campaign to rejuvenate and revitalize the Friday party scene in north Phoenix. Whiskey River is over 7 years old, an age at which most clubs have already closed their doors or tried to remake themselves by remodeling, changing their name, and revamping their entertainment format. Whiskey River has remained faithful to their identity while being open to evolve as times, trends and the economy change for better or worse. Whiskey has abandoned the traditional Friday pricing approach of “sock it to them and charge them full

price (because you can) on Friday” to offering 50 cent domestic bottled beer, wine and well drinks from 6pm to 11pm. Call it the “longest happy hour in town” with a “late night party feel.” WTF can stand for a lot of things, but at Whiskey River it stands for “Whiskey Thinks Fifty” (50 cents) or “Way Too Fine”, a contest for the ladies with a $100 cash prize. If you’d like to check out “WTF IS GOING ON AT WHISKEY RIVER” head to 3202 E. Greenway Parkway (NW corner of 32nd St and Greenway) in Phoenix this Friday night! Doors open at 6pm. Call 602-867-2802 to reserve a table before 8pm. Visit www.whiskeyriversaloon.com for more information.

British Airways was attempting to show how their new cellphone boarding pass technology would be a bright idea in a recent story in an airport employee magazine in London. But a careful look at the boarding pass reveals that Osama Bin Laden might indeed be in first class with a frequent flyer rewards number. British Airways is looking into the matter to find out who is responsible for the obvious practical joke at the publication. AZW Comments:

INGENUITY

We predict a future job opening or two at the publication. Best time ever to apply for a job in that organization. Give it about a month and we predict several openings in their PR department as well. Heck...go for Vice President in about 6 weeks. Whomever is responsible better be harder to find than Bin Laden...that’s for sure!

Waffle House Employee or Superhero? Employee Brian McKnight went above and beyond the call of waffleduty when he confronted 3 teens in the parking lot of the Murfreesboro Waffle House after they skipped out on their bill. Their answer was to attempt to run him down (obviously not happy with their meal). Thinking quickly (but not brightly), McKnight leaped onto the hood of their car and refused to be shaken off. In a scene that should be purchased for the next “Leggo my Eggo” commercial, McKnight was taken for a 5-minute, death-defying ride at speeds approaching 60 miles per hour! Now here’s the amazing part: Somehow, McKnight managed to get his cell phone out of his pocket while hanging on for his life and he was able to dial 911. Finally, the waffle bandits stopped the car and the police took over with lots of nasty charges and bookings. AZW Comments: First of all: Pay your bill at the Waffle House! Don’t even think of skipping out with maniacs like McKnight on the job! Second: If this guy doesn’t get employee of the month, we think he should seriously consider not working there anymore. Third: We want to hear the transcript of the 911 call...”Hello...911...Yeah, I’m clinging to the hood of a car traveling at 60 miles per hour in Murfreesboro Tennessee and I need someone to help me make these guys pay for their damn waffles!”

LIVE! SECTION By Lynita Johnson You can’t think about reggae without thinking of Bob Marley. The mighty Marley is acknowledged internationally for bringing the music, political struggles and laid back island mentality of his native Jamaica to the world. Backed by the Original Wailers, Marley has sold more than 250 million albums. Now, the band instrumental in creating that international success,

will once again bring the island vibe to their devoted Valley Fans Sunday, June 20 at the Valley’s new home for live music and entertainment, 910 Live. The Original Wailers features a trio of Marley’s legendary musicians who toured with him until his death in 1981: Earl “Wya” Lindo, Junior Marvin, and Al Anderson. Keyboard player Earl “Wya” Lindo was the first of the trio to join the Wailers in 1973 at the time when the Wailers’ debut album for Island Records, “Catch A Fire,” was first released. A year later American born guitarist Al Anderson joined the group. It was Al’s playing on hits like “No Woman No Cry” that first lured rock fans to the Wailers’ music, and lent Marley’s songs their international appeal. In 1977, singer and guitarist Junior Marvin enlisted with the Wailers, providing unforgettable solos on tracks like “Waiting In Vain”, “The Heathen” and “Jammin.” Collectively this trio has played with some of music’s biggest names such as Ike & Tina Turner, Steve Winwood, Stevie Wonder, Taj Mahal, Peter Tosh, James Brown, Traffic, Ben Harper, Lauryn Hill and recently with OAR. Touring internationally for much of the past 40 years, the band looks forward to playing Arizona’s newest addition to the live music scene, the state of the art 910 Live. 910 Live fills the need for an intimate concert venue in Tempe after the

loss of famed 90’s live music venues Nita’s Hideaway and Boston’s. Located on the site of the aforementioned Boston’s, the newly renovated 910 Live is “excited to provide Valley live music fans with a venue to enjoy great music from local, regional, national and international artists in all genres,” states 910 Live General Manager Brain Schillizzi. He continues, “while bands will find the stage ample for high energy performances, DJs will enjoy the state of the art DJ booth which allows them to intimately witness the audiences feel their beats.” With a modern industrial style the venue features polished concrete floors, brushed metal accents, rolling garage doors which open to the back patio for an indoor/outdoor stage, and a metallic granite topped bar adorned with classic rock decals and dancer poles. The 1000+ capacity venue also features a dedicated bar for those enjoying music under the stars on the expansive patio. The facility’s open layout also affords 910 Live the opportunity to host a variety of events from live music performances, to fashion shows and charitable events. The concert venue affords artists with followings large and small to engage directly with their audiences. Charitable organizations find the layout suitable for events while fashion designers find the space works for runway shows.

The term “blowing a smoke ring” is something of a misnomer and probably the reason many cigar smokers fail. Most people think they have to exhale to form a ring when, in fact, just the opposite is true. Let’s start with the basics and not get ahead of ourselves. The first thing you need is a cigar that will produce dense smoke. Smoke rings are delicate and if your cigar is producing light, ‘airy’ smoke, it will be difficult to get your ring to come together and stay together after it leaves your lips. Next is a nice, calm environment. Moving air will disrupt the fragile cohesion, while still air will allow a smoke ring to grow to its full glory and linger for a while afterwards. With the right cigar and the right room, next time out we’ll get to ringing.
