After studying classical piano for seven years in his German homeland, a 13-year-old Kaeshammer (pronounced “case-hammer”) discovered boogie-woogie as played by Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis, Pete Johnson, and Pinetop Smith. In three years, the teen wunderkind was playing boogie-woogie piano in clubs, concerts, and festivals all over Germany. He attracted attention almost immediately after the family moved to the west coast of Canada, turning heads at performances at blues and jazz festivals during the summer of 1996. His first three recordings, Blue Keys (1996), Tell You

This Canadian pianist combines boogie-woogie virtuosity, vocal ability and charisma for an evening of cool jazz and rock and roll. Kaeshammer released his latest record, “Lovelight,” in 2009. In the 1890s movie theaters were non-existent, movies were usually shown between acts at live stage shows. A man in Pittsburgh, PA took over an empty store, put in 90 + seats, a screen, and a piano, and opened the first real movie theater in America. It was called the Nickelodeon, since it cost only a nickel to enter. The first movie shown there was ‘The Great Train Robbery’ (1905)!

In September 2006, Disneyland guests found a surprise waiting for them in the bushes near Big Thunder Mountain Railroad; a blow-up Guantanamo Bay prisoner. Disney officials were just as surprised as the gusts were to find the orange jumpsuit wearing, bagged head, handcuffed prisoner there. The culprit was Banksy, an internationally known graffiti street artist whose work surpasses simple tagging. Often political in nature, his work (sometimes larger than life) is always controversial. Banksy directs the new documentary Exit Through The Gift Shop, which focuses on the wannabe filmmaker/artist Thierry Guetta. The film has come under scrutiny AZWeeklyMagazine.com

as to the validity of the story. Some claim the whole thing is nothing but another work and statement from the artist, others believe what they see if a true. Either way, the documentary has received critical praise. The focus of the film is not Banksy, rather an odd, self-expressive Frenchman living in Los Angeles named Thierry Guetta who decided to start filming street artists after becoming obsessed with “Invader,” another well known graffiti artist. After becoming accepted by several other artists, Guetta started accompanying his idols around the world filming their every move. He ended up with boxes upon boxes of videotapes. After getting permission from and meeting Banksy, he was persuaded to give up filming and become and artist himself. That is when Guetta became his alter-ego; “Mr. Brainwash.” Exit Though the Gift Shop follows Guetta through his quest to become a filmmaker to his eventual gallery show opening in Los Angeles that attracted thousands and a whole lot of media attention. One of the best documentaries of the year, Exit Through the Gift Shop is fascinating for several reasons. Watching Guetta’s obsessive behavior is interesting enough, but watching street artists create their work is even more so. Jeunet takes a serious subject and ventures into whimsical territory, occasionally utilizing an oldfashioned silent film technique in order to propel his characters to the next plot point. Such moments are truly transfixing. On the other hand, Jeunet’s storytelling feels rushed, as if the filmmaker is impatient to arrive at the movie’s visual core. A lack of character development discourages the audience from becoming emotionally involved.

The Manic Organic This week’s column might be a bit of a stretch but what the heck. I saw a movie last night called “Fast Food Nation” and it left quite an impression. I don’t recommend it unless you have a clear conscious, are open-minded, posses apolitical views and have a strong stomach. Yes, it does give good reason to eat organic but there is so much more involved in this documentary-style-butreally-a-movie-with-big-stars production. You’ll get hit on all fronts with this one - illegal immigration, evil big business practices, HR violations, disgusting meat production clips and assorted miniplots to keep it entertaining. Bottom line - change needs to be made on a broad, encompassing basis, with organic practices leading the way. After taking a vacation last week from our Summer Travel Series, we’re back to finish it up right. As you will recall, our previous travel adventures took us to San Diego and San Francisco where we found great breweries and world class beer bars. This week we are going to leave California and head to another great summer get-away location, Colorado. It’s a big state, so let’s get started. Four Corners is a unique spot in the United States as it is the only place where four states border each other. Of those, Colorado is to the Northeast. As you drive across the border, you can be headed for only one place, Durango. This seemingly quiet town of approximately 15,000 people is home to no less than four breweries from the tiny Carver to the nationally distributed SKA Brewing. All of them make good beer, but SKA is the brewery worthy of the tour. Having moved to a new home just a couple of years ago, the folks at SKA are more than proud to show it off. Stop by their tasting room and enjoy some of their classic beers like Pinstripe or Decadent; or, even better, try some of the smaller production beers that are limited to Durango…the Local Series, as they

call it. Don’t miss Carver, located on Main Avenue. While the brewery is small, the beer is tasty and they make one of the best breakfasts in town… so it seems you will actually need to make two visits to Carver Brewing, one for breakfast and one for beer. Finally, no visit to Durango would be complete without a trip to Lady Falconburgh’s Barley Exchange, also on Main Avenue. The Lady has 38 beers on tap, a lively crowd, fun bartenders and an enjoyable take on bar food. Finally, a trip out Highway 550 brings you to the Olde Schoolhouse Café. A small, hole-inthe-wall bar with great pizza and a limited selection of beer. But it is the first bar to ever put SKA Brewing on tap and the original, very uniquely designed tap handles are still in use. Enjoy the atmosphere, shoot some pool and watch the regulars filter in and out. In the winter, it’s also great après ski. Time to head to the Front Range, we’ll start our trip in Fort Collins to the north. A wonderful town which has been named as one of Forbes Magazine’s “Best Places to Live” on several recent occasions. Colorado State University is also located here, but it’s the beer scene we want to talk about. If Colorado is the Napa Valley of Beer as they claim,

Fort Collins may very well be at the center of it. The most well known of the six breweries headquartered here is New Belgium. Founded on a bicycle seat is their motto and their flagship beer, Fat Tire, reflects that. New Belgium is more than Fat Tire, and every beer has its own story… make sure you take the time to learn them all. The tour starts and ends in the Liquid Center where you will certainly enjoy some of their fine offerings. Throughout the buildings you come to understand New Belgium’s dedication to quality, as well as having fun. And if you ever forget, a short trip down the sliding board from the offices to the tasting room will remind you to Follow Your

Folly which is the brewery’s slogan. A short bike ride from the brewery brings you to College Avenue, which is where the nightlife happens in town. Our suggestion is to hit up Choice City Butcher Shop at Olive Street. Outstanding sandwiches, a dozen taps and an interesting selection of bottle selections makes this our number one choice for beer drinking in town. There are plenty of other fine locations as well, The Tap Room, Lucky Joe’s The Crown Room and The Pickle Barrel all get high marks.

First up is Left Hand Brewing. Known in Arizona primarily for their outstanding Milk Stout (and if you have never had a pint or two of that

poured with nitrogen, look for it around Phoenix…it’s a special treat), all of their beers shine in their home state. The tasting room is friendly and inviting and there are always some unique beers available. Just a few minutes away is Oskar Blues, the folks who started what they call

the Canned Beer Apocalypse. This canning only brewery is wide open and spacious and the canning line can be watched from their tasting room, called The Tasty Weasel. There are usually some specialties available such as barrel aged Mama’s Little Yella Pils. If you still haven’t had your fill or you’re just ready for a meal, right around the corner is their new restaurant Home Made Liquids and Solids. You will recognize it by the huge Dale’s Pale Ale can out front. Inside, there are 43 craft taps, Southern Barbecue and the great music that Oskar Blues is famous for. “It’s like the Big Muddy flowing through the Rocky Mountains,” says founder Dale Katechis. After your meal, jump on the Diagonal Highway to Boulder where more great beer awaits. Before you find the beer in Boulder, make your first stop at Redstone Meadery on Pearl Street, just off Foothills Parkway. Mead is a different beverage and the folks at Redstone do it well. Meet the owners, David and Madoka, who are good people and fascinating to spend time with. Five more minutes from Redstone brings you to a real gem, Avery Brewing. Run by Adam Avery, this brewery is located in an industrial park and if it looks like it was assemble piece meal, it was. Taking advantage of whatever space was available, Avery brewing has had to get creative about its design. No matter, the tasting room is easy to find and, once again, always full of special beers not typically available. There are plenty of other fine breweries in town to explore, Mountain Sun and Twisted Pine to name a couple. You can certainly spend a couple of days exploring the beer scene in Boulder. As you leave Boulder, get on Highway 36 and the crown jewel of beer in Colorado approaches. Denver is the hub for the beer scene in this state and you will need several days here to enjoy it all. The hub within the hub is LoDo or Lower Downtown, so plan on staying in that area. Once there you won’t need a car as virtually everything is within walking distance, a short taxi ride or a trip on the free

Ask for Tebo, Breckenridge’s head salesperson and sometimes known as the Mayor of Lodo. He’s always fun to drink with and can give you some great insight to the city. Three blocks from the Ball Park Brew Pub is Great Divide, a small (but growing) brewery that is known for producing high quality and fun beers. The tasting room is small and looks in to part of the brewery so you know the beer you are drinking is as fresh as possible. Two other places to stop in LoDo are Falling Rock Taphouse and The Rackhouse Pub. The former is considered one of the best beer bars in the country and attracts some of the rarest beers available. During Great American Beer Festival week, the place is alive with special events and the patio is full of famous beer people. You might bump in to Garrett Oliver from Brooklyn Brewing or share a Pliney the Elder with Vinnie Cirluzo from Russian River. The Rackhouse Pub is the newest venture of Eric Warner, formerly of Flying Dog. Located in a building that is owned by Stranahan’s Whiskey (in and of itself a great reason to visit), The Rackhouse offers almost fifty taps of great beer from across the country and the world. Wow! Colorado is a great beer state

The sound waxes and wanes. The overall effect is rather like the sound of a swarm of irritated and angry bees, to say the least.

Buzzing. Literally. Drums, songs, chants and cheers at the 2010 FIFA World Cup have been drowned out and overpowered by what is best described as the constant sound of swarming angry bees. Love ‘em or hate’em, the blaring plastic trumpets known as the vuvuzela have become the trademark sound of the 2010 World Cup. What exactly is the appeal? The vuvuzela is like a straightened trumpet and is played by blowing a raspberry into the mouthpiece. The player’s lips open and close about 235 times a second, sending puffs of air down the tube, which excite resonance of the air in the conical bore. A single vuvuzela played by a decent trumpeter is reminiscent of a hunting horn – but the sound is less pleasing when played by the average football fan, as the note is imperfect and fluctuates in frequency. It sounds more like an elephant trumpeting. This happens because the player does

Why so loud? The loudness can be explained by the bore shape, which is roughly conical, and flares. As well as creating sound at a frequency of 235 hertz, the instrument generates harmonics – sound at multiples of the fundamental frequency. Strong harmonics have thus far been measured at 470, 700, 940, 1171, 1400 and 1630 hertz. A flared instrument has louder higher-frequency harmonics than a cylindrical one. The flared instrument is perceived as louder because the higher harmonics are at frequencies where our hearing is most sensitive. If you have been in a bar or nightclub in the Phoenix area over the past 35 years you’ve probably run across the valley’s own version of the The Andy Griffith Show’s “Barney Fife” or as his mom named him, Bob Phillips. New Edition descendents Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant bring their Heads of State tour to the intimate Celebrity Theatre at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, July 16th. Expect an incredible catalog of hits from their group and solo efforts. New Edition originated in Boston, Massachusetts and burst on the scene with their 1983 debut album ‘Candy Girl.’ They were the progenitors of the boy band movement of the 1980s and 1990s, and led the way for groups like New Kids on the Block and Boyz II Men. Some of their early hits included “Mr. Telephone Man” and “Cool It Now.” As they grew older, the sixsome drifted apart. The most eclectic member, Bobby Brown, left New Edition to pursue a solo career in 1986. The group remained strong, however, with R&B crooner Johnny Gill replacing Brown. New Edition’s

more mature work with Gill enabled them to successfully transition from teenage idols to adult stars. Brown briefly reunited with New Edition for their 1996 album ‘Home Again.’ In addition to their success with New Edition, Brown, Gill and Tresvant also prospered as solo artists. Bad boy Brown attracted the most attention with popular hits like “My Prerogative,” “Girlfriend” and “Every Little Step,” as well as his tabloid ubiquity, which included substance abuse and a failed marriage to Whitney Houston. Gill, who just finished his first Johnny Gill CD after 14 years, is best known for the sizzling hit “My, My, My.” Tresvant’s “Sensitivity” sold over a million copies and was a #1 R&B hit. His other hits include “Stone Cold Gentleman,” “Do What I Gotta Do” and “Rated X.”

When Bill Jung was laid off from his semiconductor job after 14 and a half years, he and his wife Beth weren’t sure exactly what lay ahead; they did know one thing, they both had a passion for tequila and really fresh authentic Mexican food. It was a concept they had been thinking about for years, however, with the economy the way it was, it was not the most inviting time to open a new business, but they were not to be dissuaded. Bill’s idea was to take a shot! If they could withstand the downturn, they could certainly hold strong once the economy came back. Now Cave Creek is home to Los Mesquites Taqueria (The Mesquite Taco Factory). Once known as a “rowdy hang out”, Los Mesquites now prides itself on customer appreciation, a family atmosphere and fantastic food at reasonable prices. They also have one of the largest collections of fine tequilas in the Town of Cave Creek. Specialties include the use of a real mesquite fired grill to cook the meats used in the tacos and fajitas. It is the mesquites smoked taste of the meats that sets Los Mesquites apart. Some of their specialty tacos include fish, shrimp, beef tongue and cow cheek tacos. The corn tortillas used for the tacos are pressed and grilled only after you place your order.
