ARTS! ETRAN FINATAWA

HYPNOTIC AFRICAN BLUES COMES TO THE MIM MUSIC THEATER Nomad blues. That’s one term that has been used to describe the music of Niger’s Etran Finatawa. Like American blues, it’s a crossroads sound. Only the crossroads in this case is the desert terrain where the Arab cultures of North Africa mix and mingle with the rich musical traditions of sub-Saharan Africa. Hypnotic is a word that also frequently comes up in connection with Etran Finatawa. Crystalline electric guitar lines glide like graceful serpents over pulsing, cyclic percussion. Plaintive voices decry evocative melodies that seem both ancient and strangely contemporary. African music fans may note similarities to artists like Ali Farka Toure and Toumani Diabati from nearby Mali. But on a closer listening, Etran Finatawa’s unique qualities come into focus. Their name means “the Stars of Tradition” and they are the only

music group to fuse the cultures of Niger’s Wodaabe and Tuareg people. Their visual style is as distinctive as their music. They take the stage in traditional garb: richly colored turbans, plumes, bold facial paint and flowing garments in richly patterned fabrics. The eye is instantly captivated, but it’s the sound that draws the listener into a trance-like space where rhythm and melodic cycles spiral ever outward and onward.

Shooting begins next month on “Hostel: Part III.” Franchise originator Eli Roth will produce the horror sequel while Scott Spigel will take over as director for Michael Weiss’s script in which a Las Vegas bachelor party goes horribly wrong. Rumor had it last week that Josh Hutcherson was officially offered the role of Peter Parker in Sony’s “Spider-Man” reboot but, later, it was announced that Andrew Garfield (“The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”) had ultimately scored the role.

The most critically acclaimed film of all time with rankings in more than 8 all-time polls is ‘Citizen Kane’ (1941), starring and directed by Orson Welles who was 25 years old, and his directorial debut!

‘Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky’, a look at the early years of the fashion icon Review by Stan Robinson Most know the name, specifically ‘Chanel N°5 perfume’, launched by Parisian fashion designer Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, and has been on sale continuously since its introduction in 1921. The more astute among us also know of her fashion creations since she opened her millinery in 1912, and rose to become one of the premier fashion designers in Paris, France, and ultimately throughout the world! Numerous movies and TV mini-series have chronicled her humble childhood in a French orphanage, through her early days as a young dressmaker’s assistant, to her passionate and tragic love affairs. She’s often given the moniker of ‘a glamorous AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Now Playing! woman who was hard to love and harder to ignore’. She never married throughout her 88 years (18831971), with numerous affairs; some became public and further added to her mystique. ‘Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky’ is a look at one of those affairs, saving both of their mental and creative ability at a time when both had hit lulls with life… In Paris 1913, Igor Stravinsky’s concert ‘The Rite of Spring’ is performed, with Coco in attendance (her millenary shop just newly opened), is criticized as too modern, too foreign and almost causes riots. 1920, Coco is newly wealthy and successful but grief-stricken after the death of a love interest in a car crash. Igor Stravinsky, following the Russian Revolution is now a penniless refugee living in exile in Paris. Coco is introduced to Igor and the attraction between them is instant and electric. Coco invites Igor along with his wife and four children, to stay at her new villa, the ‘Bel Respiro’, in the western suburbs of Paris. Igor and his family live in a separate wing of the estate with a study and piano where he rekindles his creative talent as he composes his next ballet, and, an affair instituted by Coco. There’s more of my review of ‘Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky’, along with my list of two recommended movies for a look at Coco Chanel’s life at www.ScreenScene.org In French with English subtitles.

More Predators Hit Your Local Multiplex By Randy Montgomery

Adrien Brody and Topher Grace take to the screen in Predators, a sequel/follow-up to the Arnold Schwarzenegger classic from 1987. The pre-term California governor was absent from the sequel in 1990 as well. In 1987, a group of military men were hunted by a mysterious alien race. In 1990 the predators reappeared and attacked Los Angeles. In 2010 they appear once again, this time in a Central American Jungle. These “predators” have also fought the iconic “Aliens” in 2004 and 2007. Audiences can’t seem to get enough of these creatures. Moviegoers cheered as the idea of them popped up Get the free mobile app at http:/ / gettag.mobi in the trailer months ago.

Steve Carell gets (even more) animated in ‘Despicable Me’ By Joseph J. Airdo Steve Carell voices super-villain Gru in Universal Pictures’ computer-

animated comedy “Despicable Me.” Delighted by all things wicked, Gru surrounds himself with an arsenal of weapons and battle-ready vehicles (not to mention a small army of minions). However, when Gru encounters three orphan girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen – a potential father – it appears as though the world’s greatest... er... second-greatest villain has met his match. “Despicable Me” is rated PG with a 95-minute runtime. Its voice talents include Russell Brand, Jason Segel, Kristen Wiig, Will Arnett, Ken Jeong, Danny McBride, Julie Andrews and Miranda Cosgrove. Read Joseph J. Bacon Isn’t All Bad

While heavy on salt and kind of high in calories, bacon has no trans fat at all. Several slices of bacon are healthier in terms of calories, salt, fat and cholesterol than a hot dog, hamburger or glazed donut. AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Didn’t Bring Home the Bacon...

Kevin Bacon was considered for the role of “Starman” which later went to actor Jeff Bridges. Kevin was also considered for the role of Sam Wheat in “Ghost”, now made famous by Patrick Swayze. Kevin was considered for but did not get the role of Mick in “Bad Boys”, which was played by Sean Penn The Phrase “Bring Home The Bacon” originated in the 16th Century. European peasants could only afford pork once in a while. When visitors would arrive, they would hang the bacon up to show off. It was a sign of wealth if a man could “bring home the bacon”. They would then cut off a small piece to share with guests and they would sit, talk and “chew the fat”. Diet Coke With Bacon! The product does exist, but it was only released as a collector’s item. No idea why they felt it would be a “Diet” flavor.

By Chef Rachel Albert Looking for fresh, affordable, intensely flavorful Mexican food in Phoenix? Go to Gallo Blancho Café & Bar located in the Clarendon Hotel in downtown Phoenix (401 W Clarendon Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85013). Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 8 am to 10 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 8 am to 11 pm and you can order breakfast all day. Open since April 2009 Gallo Blanco’s has attracted a loyal following. Get there early during lunch hour to avoid the rush. Many local business people populate the place during the week. They use as much locally grown and raised produce and meat as possible,

make everything from scratch, cook their tortillas to order, and prepare all of their salsas and sauces fresh (and in house) daily. Their menu is large enough to have something for everyone. You’ll find an ecclectic blend of Southwestern and American items from tacos, breakfast burritos, quesadillas, ceviche, grilled fish, refried beans and guacamole to burgers, steak fries, granola, crepes, and flapjacks. Cool off with fresh squeezed juice, light Mexican fruit shakes, Horchata (a classic rice drink with sweetened condensed milk, cinnamon, and Mexican brown sugar), or fresh lemonade. The house salad contains a refreshing blend of romaine, cucumbers, ctija cheese, crunchy pepitas (toasted pumpkin seeds), orange segments, crispy jicama slices and tortilla strips with light and tangy herb vinaigrette. They have reasonable prices, generous portions, and good service. Check out their menu on line at www. galloblancocafe.com. Don’t be shy, give Gallo Blanco a try. PIZZA TRIVIA Americans consume more pizza on Superbowl Sunday than any other day. American’s LEAST favorite common topping: Anchovies. Pizza is a $32 Billion dollar industry. Pizza Hut is the largest seller of pizza but Domino’s delivers more. You, on average will eat 23 pounds of pizza this year. Americans eat 100 acres of pizza a day. Servicemen brought pizza to the U.S. from the WWII era but the meat topping is an American concept and was never on Italian pizzas at that time.

The Manic Organic Thought I would take it easy this past Fourth of July weekend and let you have a list of my favorites - something I am not paid to do. In fact, before mentioning any of these favorites I want to disclose now that none have me on their payroll, although I could certainly use the cash. Organizations - Local First Arizona, Slow Food USA Grocery - Trader Joe’s Restaurants - True Foods, Picazzo’s Place - the Farm at South Mountain Web Site - Cleaneatingmag.com Book - “Food Rules” by Michael Pallan I could probably go on but perhaps I’ll do an more detailed list sometime down the road. Anyways, that’s my take and since they’re listed I suggest you take a look to see why I feel these picks are top-notch in your quest for an organic lifestyle. - MO

BEER! SECTION

BEER! Beers of Summer Now that we have all survived Independence Day with fireworks and beer and barbecues and beer and swimming and, did I mention beer? It’s time to deal with the 110 degree days. What better way to relax than with a refreshing beverage? Of course, I suggest beer…and in the summer, nothing is better than one of those summer beers specifically designed for the hot months. Why don’t we take a look at the story of summer seasonals as well as some of the best offerings available? Summer is not a time for dark, rich, chewy beers. The weather is not conducive to these heavier styles. That said, if you prefer an Oskar Blues Ten Fidy can while sitting in your pool, go for it. As always, these are guidelines and suggestions. In other parts of the country, summer beers are sometimes referred to as lawnmower beers because they are particularly effective after spending a couple of hours tending the yard. In Arizona, we call them “Rock Raking” beers and they are equally effective at quenching the thirst.

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

When you open a summer beer, you will frequently find wheat in it. That’s because when added to beer, wheat provides lightness to the overall body of the beer, while still providing flavor. It makes for an enjoyable quaff on a hot day. Summer beers also tend to have some citrus flavor to them. Whether from the addition of citrus during the brewing process, or the flavors that the malt, hops and yeast take on when brewed, citrus brings a refreshing quality to the beer in the same way a glass of lemonade does. Many people enjoy adding a lemon, or orange, or sometimes lime to their beer. If that is your preference, go ahead and enjoy. But, be aware that the oils in the citrus can impact head retention and make the beer go flat quicker. Then again, when it’s hot outside, nobody lets a cold beer sit too long anyway. Before we look at specific summer beers, a couple of other things to keep in mind. With barbecue, look for a beer with a decent hop profile to balance off the tanginess of the sauce and the flavors of the meat. Smoked beers also do well as they accentuate the smoky goodness of whatever you throw on the grill. Another thing to keep in mind is that alcohol, of all kinds, is a diuretic. It will add to the dehydration process, not reduce it. Continued on Page 21...

With that in mind, we remember what Fred Eckhardt, the dean of American beer writers, suggests. Fred actually does this year round, in fact. He alternates glasses of water with glasses of beer. It cuts down on dehydration, it slows the effects of alcohol consumption, and it clears your palate for the next beer. Even if you don’t want to follow every beer with water, when you are really thirsty consider starting with a glass of water. And don’t be shy about at alternating at least sips of water with pints of beer as the evening wears on. Your head will thank you in the morning as dehydration is a big part of that hangover you may feel the next day.

summer refresher. Its light body and flavor allows it to be consumed ice cold without losing any taste. Look for it on draft at Chronic Tacos, Old Chicago, Whole Foods and Yucca Tap Room. Next up is Big Sky Summer Honey. Brewed with unique, balanced blend of spices, Northwest Hops, and Montana honey, this beer, as are most of the summer beers, is low in alcohol. The lower alcohol content makes for an easy drinking session beer when you are going to be drinking more than one or two during the height of the summer. This beer is on draft at Red, White and Brew – Gilbert, Draw 10, Delux and Mellow Mushroom.

What summer beers are available in Arizona and what do they taste like? That’s the real question after all. Perhaps the lightest of the bunch

Abita is one of the few breweries that offer five seasonals. The Red Ale is available during the spring and early

is Breckenridge Summer Bright. A filtered wheat beer flavored with just a hint of lemon and lime, it is an ideal

summer (if you’re lucky, you might find some of that still on the shelves), and the Wheat is available in the midst of the summer. Abita always likes to put a unique twist on things, so rather than brewing their wheat beer as an ale the way many other breweries do, Abita makes a wheat lager. The lagering process makes for an even cleaner, crisper beer which really soothes the palette in the heat. Another fine wheat beer available

only in the summer is Woody Creek White from Flying Dog. Named after a tavern in their hometown (and a creek, but the tavern is more important to the story) frequented by early

supporters Hunter S. Thompson and Ralph Steadman, this beer is a Belgian style Wit. An unfiltered wheat beer with orange peel and coriander added, Woody Creek is an excellent choice when the thermometer hits 100. Currently available on draft at The Compound Grill. Two more flavorful summer beers are Anderson Valley Summer Solstice and The Bruery Tradewinds Tripel.

ale with a Southeast Asian twist. In place of the typical candi sugar used in this style, brewers here use a little rice to lighten the body and increase the gravity, then they add Thai Basil which brings a unique and enjoyable flavor. This beer is only available in Arizona in bottles. There are a variety of other great summer beers available in the state. Look for Alaskan Summer, a light Kolsch style beer. Skinny Dip isn’t just a hobby, it is also the summer beer from New Belgium. Light and refreshing with Cascade hops and a hint of lime, it makes for a great summer quencher. Also try Curve Ball from Pyramid, this is another take on

The Spanish name is given to it in recognition of the many Hispanic families in the area of the brewery who have traditionally supported them and drank this particular beer. This beer is a little more full-bodied than most and provides the unique flavor of a cream ale, including a hint of vanilla at the finish. This is a popular one, find it on draft at The Vig Uptown, Papago and Yucca Tap Room to name a few. Finally, Tradewinds Tripel from The Bruery comes in a large bottle format in order to pack in all the flavor it brings. This is a Belgian style blonde

the Kolsch style, enjoyable but different from the Alaskan product. These products are all available in better beer bars.

Orange Blossom, Sonoran White Chocolate Ale or Sun Up Light Rail Cream Ale. Try them all this summer for a summer to remember.

There you have it, these beers can all be found in bottles (and cans in the case of Summer Solstice) all around the state at finer beer stores. If you are looking for something lighter in a year round beer, think about Lost Coast Great White, Avery White Rascal, Grand Canyon Pilsner, Papago

beer fanatics love MADE IN THE SHADE BEER FESTIVAL This past June 26th was the celebration of the 18th annual Made In The Shade Beer Festival, held in Flagstaff, AZ. We were fortunate enough to be able to escape the Phoenix heat and arrive early in temperate Flagstaff. The entire weekend was a celebration of all things beer. Beginning Friday, with a Left Hand Brewing promotion held at Flagstaff Brewing Company early evening and, later that night just down the street, at The Green Room. Saturday morning, then, came awfully early. Luckily, the promoters of Made In The Shade, Sun Sounds, understand the late nights, and so, scheduled the event accordingly.

26

We arrived at Fort Tuthill when it opened, beating the larger masses, and were able to sample some great craft beer. A good showing of West Coast craft breweries was well represented there, including SKA, Big Sky, Firestone, New Belgium, Deschuttes and even an all organic brewery, Eel River. July 8th, 2010 - July 14th, 2010

Even those looking for the obscure were not disappointed. Stone sampled their 14th anniversary Emperial IPA, Grand Teton poured Lost Continent and Deschuttes’ Red Chair IPA were some of the most memorable and well received. There were also some wines and vodkas available for those so inclined.

Check out our 110 beers from around the world! Fulton Ranch 135 W. Ocotillo Rd. • 480.802.2886 Supe SupeRStition SpRingS 6821 E. Superstition Springs Blvd. 480.218.8171 www.oldchicago.com

After making the beer rounds, we were able to enjoy some of the rock and roll provided while indulging in some much needed nourishment. By this time, nearly the entire population of Flagstaff (and some of Phoenix as well) had arrived. By mid-afternoon, the event was in full swing. If you have never attended this festival, it’s a great excuse for a trip to the mountains and to escape the heat of Phoenix in late June. With the rising popularity in craft beer, if you plan to attend next year we suggest that you arrive early and invest the few extra (and worthwhile) dollars for the VIP pass. You will definitely not be disappointed.

GENERAL RULES OF ETIQUETTE Just as there are certain rituals that must be followed when lighting and smoking a cigar, there are a number of seemingly unwritten rules which tell you how to conduct yourself and your cigar through the difficult world of cigar etiquette. Take note darling... a few must do’s are as follows: Warm the foot of the cigar slightly before starting to puff on it. Remove the band carefully after lighting the cigar. Take your time in smoking it; a puff a minute is about right. Hold the cigar between your index finger and thumb. Let the cigar die a dignified death. After it’s smoked half way, it will go out on its own. Dispose the dead cigar discreetly and quickly. And finally, wait at least fifteen minutes between cigars; anything less indicates obsessive behavior. Churchill’s Fine Cigars 4940 E. GAME!

“It’s tough to say,” Strasburg said recently when discussing how he musters up his fastball. “I have really big hands and long arms. I’m pretty strong. I don’t really show it in the weight room. It just kind of happens.” If anything, Strasburg looks a lot like Nolan Ryan on the mound. Most pro coaches and scouts are in agreement. Velocity is something that is Godgiven. It’s like running speed. Some guys can run real fast and some guys can’t. But there are ways to maximize those natural talents.

WEAPONS OF FAST DESTRUCTION Rookie Pitching Sensation Stephen Strasburg and His Warp Speed Fastball

throw the ball as hard.”

to come.

Pitchers must strengthen their legs and glutes, develop a solid delivery and devote their throwing motion to muscle memory. And then there’s more. Like movement on the fastball, command of the strike zone and adding more than just a fastball to the repertoire.

Strasburg’s smooth delivery remains the same regardless of whether he’s about to burn in a fastball or break off a curveball that crosses the plate at around 79 to 81 miles per hour. And with such a calm and easy delivery, many are left wondering exactly where in the world the missiles he throws are coming from. And still we’re left knowing only one sure thing. The kid is fast. Very, very fast.

Strasburg throws a four-seam fastball that’s fairly straight. A 100 mph blip on the radar screen. He gets movement with a two-seam

His pitches are fast. Amazingly, ridiculously fast.

Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum triumphed over Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko in the Strikeforce Fedor vs. Werdum match up on June 26, 2010 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA. The fight went one round – 1:09 seconds to be exact, with Werdum, a Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt under Sylvio Behring, emerging from the short battle victorious.

Stephen Strasburg, 21 year old pitching sensation for the Washington Nationals, throws a fastball that hits 100 mph. His motion is fluid. He rocks back, raises his left leg, plants it and then brings his right arm through as he lets go of the ball. His in-game pitches look almost the same as his warm-up tosses. Only the pop of the catcher’s mitt and the radar gun give away the pitch’s true speed. Strasburg regularly hits 98 mph with his fastball, and is among the few active pitchers in the game who have been clocked at 100 mph or more on the radar gun. So where exactly does his extreme heat that has captured the world’s attention come from?

SPORTS FANATICS:

“I’m a firm believer that either you throw hard or you don’t. You’re born with it,” Strasburg’s former pitching Coach Greg Booker said. “But there’s a lot of guys that are big and strong and you’d think they could throw the ball just as hard, but for whatever reason, they can’t generate the same arm speed and, therefore, just can’t

fastball. He places his index and middle fingers along the seams of the baseball and by applying the right amount of pressure, he unleashes a fastball that darts down or in to righthanded hitters. And because Strasburg’s arsenal includes more than just a fastball, hitters can’t just dial it up and try to time his heater. With a great changeup and deadly curveball, it’s safe to say the kid has plenty of weapons in his arsenal to be truly great for years

As the first round began, the two circled each other, feeling each other out. Then Fedor struck Werdum in the face. Werdum fell back, tripped, and landed on his back on the mat. As the crowd went crazy thinking Werdum was hurt and Fedor was going to finish off the fight, he leaned over Werdum, who promptly grabbed his arm, got his hand on the back of his head, and locked his legs around his body for the triangle choke with arm bar.

Sweet & Sultry Summer Time Roof Top Pool Party July 10th The historic and supposedly haunted Hotel San Carlos in Phoenix has decided to earn some street credit and invite you to its night time pool party. If you have never been here before then let it be known that the infamous hotel is known for its rooftop pool. Play to the sounds of DJ UnKnown and get a kick from the lit up buildings encasing your wonderland. For a split second there - it almost feels like NY…almost. And in case you want it to feel even more like Greenwich Village, you can listen in on the live poetry sessions expressed by 5 local artists while taking a snack break with some free hors d’oeuvres. Yum. Well I think this is enough to show you that there is more to this party then a pool and drinks so make for a unique Saturday night! Doors open at 8pm Txt 520.940.6844 for more info

Bass Reactor at the Marquee Theater Saturday July 10th TM

The Best New Way to Meet Singles!

800-386-0866 www.EventsAndAdventures.com

If Electro and Dubstep put you in an energetic frenzy then you have to make it out to the Bass Reactor show. Put yourself in a big dark room, fill it with hundreds of music induced kids and flood the place with a fusion of every kind of track and sound that’s going to pump your heart into a blissful state of high energy delight. This show is headlined by Dirtyphonics, the relatively new crew hailing from France that has taken over not only France’s but Europe’s underground club scene. Known for their fusion of Drum and Bass, Electro, Hip-Hop and Breakbeats, the Dirtyphonics have quite a high reputation. UK artist Brisk also contributes to the show with his Hard House, Hardcore, and Hard Dance sets. The male/female duo of Urban Assault comes out from LA spinning

Hip Hop, Drum&Base and Turntable. While Mighty Mike Saga from Philly concentrates on the house of Industrial and Electronica. Don’t miss this must see show! 7pm show. All ages, 21 to drink. $25 all night show. Info line 602.999.7300 www.myspace.com/ bassreactoraz

Ah yes, the French. Sophie’s French Bistro Sunday July 11th I have heard people say that Phoenix lacks culture. Now it is true that we are not exactly the world’s biggest melting pot but my point is this: it is out there. For instance did you know that Sophie’s French Bistro will be celebrating Bastille Day aka storming the Bastille Prison, symbolic of the uprising of the modern nation? Well now you do. It is good to know that Sophie’s is raved to be one of the best, if not the best French restaurant in the valley. Cozy intimate atmosphere, delicious melt in your mouth food and even a French waiter or two. But on Sunday, Sophie’s will be host to live French music, a buffet of French hors d’oeuvres by Chef Serge, entertainment and of course French flair. And I do believe that everyone needs a little Paris, even in the desert. 6pm-9pm Reservations needed. (602) 956-8897 www.sophiesbistro.com

MARTINI

Best Martini Bars Directory

SKYE Try our SKYE Classic Martini Pure Elegance in Raymond’s Martini Bar Premium Vodka served Up with Gorgonzola Stuffed Olives

A Tequini is a Martini made with tequila instead of dry gin. The Martini glass is constructed so that your hand will not come in contact with the part which contains the fluids, as heat destroys flavor of the delicate mixture. The wide open mouth of the glass was originally designed to let the gin breathe.

Rockstar Mayhem Festival featuring Korn, Rob Zombie, Lamb of God and Five Finger Death Punch July 16, 2010 at Cricket Wireless Pavilion In its third year, the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival already has a rich history of featuring high-profile hard rock and metal bands. This year’s lineup is no different, as Korn, Rob Zombie, Lamb of God, and Five Finger Death Punch will be the headliners.

The Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival is an annual summer tour that brings together many hard rock and metal bands on three stages from July to August across the U.S. (In 2010, the tour also included a stop in Canada.) The festival, sponsored by Rockstar Energy drink, was founded by Kevin Lyman, who organizes the punk-minded summer tour Warped, and John Reese, who assists Lyman in overseeing Taste of Chaos, a spring festival of hardcore punk and metal July 8th, 2010 - July 14th, 2010

The first Rockstar Mayhem took place in the summer of 2008. The main stage featured Slipknot (who were supporting All Hope Is Gone), Disturbed (supporting Indestructible), DragonForce, and Mastodon. The festival also included motocross exhibitions and promotional tents for the tour’s sponsors. Rockstar Mayhem 2008 kicked off July 9, running until August 19. The side stages, named Jagermeister and Hot Topic, spotlighted up-andcoming groups like Airbourne, Five Finger Death Punch, Underoath and Machine Head. In addition, the Jagermeister stage included one winner per tour stop of a “Battle of the Bands” contest. In 2009, Rockstar Mayhem returned with headliners Marilyn Manson (supporting The High End of Low), Slayer, Killswitch Engage (supporting their second self-titled record), and Bullet for My Valentine. The festival again ran from early July through mid-August and again featured three stages, although Hot Topic dropped its sponsorship, which resulted in the third stage being renamed the Mayhem Festival Stage. For the 2010 festival, Rockstar Mayhem bolstered its lineup by including comedian Jay Oakerson and Beacher’s Madhouse, a burlesque variety show. Still, hard

rock and metal were the featured entertainment, with Korn, Rob Zombie, Lamb of God, and Five Finger Death Punch (making their second Mayhem appearance) serving as the headliners. Additionally, the tour would be making it first trek into Canada, stopping in Montreal in July. Korn, occasionally typeset as KoRn or KoRn, is a nu-metal band from Bakersfield, California, and is often credited with popularizing the numetal genre. Along with other bands at the time, they have also inspired many other metal and alternative rock and metal bands throughout the mid 1990s and early 2000s. The band’s catalog consists of nine consecutive debuts in the top ten of the Billboard 200, including a compilation album, Greatest Hits Vol. In the song ‘“Evolution,” Lead Singer Jonathan Davis lyrically speaks to mankind’s distinct lack of evolution-while the entity known as Korn has made amazing progress since their self-titled 1994 debut. Rob Zombie was born as Robert Cummings in Haverhill,

Lamb Of God cemented their position as one of the emerging extreme music bands, landing a recording contract with Epic Records. In August 2004, Lamb Of God, released its major label debut, “Ashes Of The Wake”, that turned the band into true contenders for the Metal throne; the CD crashed into the top 30 of The Billboard 200 chart spawning the Active Rock radio

minor hit “Laid To Rest”. Towards the end of 2005, the band stopped all touring and came home to Richmond to begin writing the next chapter. An intense 8 month writing process followed and in August 2006 they churned out “Sacrament” which hit the top 10 of The Billboard 200 Sales chart; the 11-track set includes the single “Redneck”.

Five Finger Death Punch drags Heavy Metal, kicking and screaming, into a new era. Incorporating all we know and love about the old-school - the guitar solos, attention to songwriting detail, heavy vocals - with new-school melodic vocals and downtuned guitars, the band bridges the gap in grand style and at full speed ahead!

He released that album, Hellbilly Deluxe in 1998. Remixes of some of its tracks were released on 1999’s American Made Music To Strip By, followed up by the studio release called The Sinister Urge in 2001. Why JAVA? Thank you for reading Java in AZ Weekly. Here you will find a list of the most authentic and unique coffee houses in our region. If you want to participate in an authentic coffee experience in our community and far away from the national chains, you can find us here. We are a group of people that have decided to open our doors so you can enjoy our places, our dreams and have a great coffee experience. Here you will learn how unique some of these places are; like Echo Coffee that brews each cup of coffee individually per order or Joe Johnston of Liberty Market that is building a coffee roaster to take his coffee to the next level. There are many other stories that truly depict our coffee and coffee culture as one that is truly artisan. Art, music, and amazingly fresh coffee all made possible with your support.
