ARTS! MIM MUSIC THEATER PICK OF THE WEEK Parno Graszt The Musical Instrument Museum Music Theater is proud to welcome Parno Graszt, Hungary’s official ambassadors of authentic Hungarian Gypsy music, for their first North American tour. Cited by many of Eastern Europe’s leading Roma/ Gypsy bands (including Little Cow) as an invaluable and enduring influence, Parno Graszt’s uninhibited, boisterous, and community-oriented shows

blur the line between audience and band, often bursting off the stage as instruments and salutations are passed freely around the room. Summing up the average critic’s response, Simon Broughton (Rough Guide’s ethonographer extraordinaire) stated after an extended weekend in the band’s hometown, “They do not use sources of Gypsy music; they are the source itself.”

Nick@ Night By Nick Connell JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT At Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre in Mesa. There’s a magical dream coat being worn in Mesa this summer at the Broadway Palm with their new production of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT! Exclamations are needed here for a show that is full of beauty and pageantry! Joseph is the colorful musical parable that follows the adventures of our young protagonist boy who is blessed with prophetic dreams and sold into slavery by his conniving brothers. But this musical has a rags to riches ending that stirred the opening weekend audience to spontaneous clapping and cheering. And so it should, this production is unique and heartfelt with an enthusiasm that charms the soul. Leading the charge in this Tim Rice-Andrew Lloyd Webber collaboration is Director/Choreographer Millie Garvey. Millie’s direction is entertaining and full of great scenes and movement. She can also thank her lucky stars that two talented actors showed up to make this dream come truewith Virginia Cavaliere and Patrick Darab starring as the Narrator and Joseph. These two make this show “Go Go Go Joseph” for a homerun! Put Mark Kleinman in the cast as Jacob and Potiphar, Alexander Nathan as Zebulon and Pharaoh, some wild and crazy brothers with a touch of mischief and you have great summer excitement for the whole family. There’s also the great music of Andrew Lloyd Webber conducted by J.R. Alexander and his orchestra-and the touching hearts and voices of the East Valley Children’s Choir, Chandler Children’s Choir, and Scottsdale Children’s Choir that you will love and cherish. Catch the “Dream of Joseph”-it’s a joyous Technicolor coat of many colors! Through August 21st. For Tickets call 480-325-6700 or BroadwayPalmWest.com MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MUSEUM at 101 North and Tatum Exit. I don’t normally give directions in my reviews but I’m so enamored with MIM (for short) that I want everyone to know where it is. This past weekend was another astounding performance by MOIRA SMILEY and VOCA at the MIM Musical Theatre. These four ladies including Moira, Ariella Forstein, Pilar Diaz and April Guthrie, were truly angelic in their vocal presentation and performance. Their harmonies and body percussions enthralled the Phoenix audience who enjoyed another acoustic masterpiece at the MIM theatre. Highlights included the audience favorites ‘Bring Me a Little Water Silvie”, “Orphan Girl”, the “Steam Engine Song” (with audience participation), a Croatian love song “Have You Seen my Love”, ‘Summer Has Come” and “The Hat” from Hungarian songwriter Bela Bartok; and a breathtaking version of the Gospel tune “Stand In The River”. What a blessing to be in the company of such talented and yet humble artists. For more information visit MoiraSmiley.com. Go to TheMim.org to catch the next masterpiece performance or call 480-245-6907 for more dates and times. BREAK A LEG!

OPENS AT BROADWAY PALM DINNER THEATRE SPECIAL SUMMER PRICES OFFER VALLEY FAMILIES AN AFFORDABLE OUTING Fresh, innovative, and an awe inspiring crowd-favorite is the best way to describe Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT. This internationally acclaimed musical/dance extravaganza explodes at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre now through August 23rd in Mesa. This lively and colorful musical parable travels through ancient Egypt as a boy, Joseph, blessed with prophetic dreams, is sold into slavery by his conniving brothers. But in true rags to riches fashion, Joseph overcomes these tremendous odds, and dares modern audiences to dream of doing the same. A blazing cornucopia of musical styles, and featuring such song favorites as “Any Dream Will Do,” “Close Every Door,” and “Go, Go, Go Joseph,” this Old Testament romp emerges as both a timely and timeless tale of tragedy and triumph. A fun-filled treat for the ages, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT is a dream of a show for the entire family! Adult ticket prices are $35 and include a buffet meal. Tickets for ages 18 and under are only $18. The story of a young man in Canaan with dream-reading abilities, Joseph receives a rainbow-colored

single-handedly generates smiles. But Bruckheimer and Turteltaub have managed to create a wondrous world around the scene, too. Save for a final act that takes a dive off the deep-end of the bizarre-pool, “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” delivers nonstop crowd-pleasing fun from start to finish, proving once again that Disney’s magic – be it a themepark ride or an animated segment set to classical music – is even more spellbinding when it comes to life on the big screen.

Or perhaps it is producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Jon Turteltaub who have the magic. The filmmaking duo is responsible for “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” a live-action adventure flick inspired by the famous animated segment from “Fantasia.” And while it may not be pitch-perfect, the movie is one of the most extraordinarily entertaining thrill-rides of the summer. Balthazar Blake (Nicholas Cage), a master sorcerer living in Manhattan, recruits a seemingly average young man named Dave (Baruchel) to help defend the city from evil sorcerer Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina). After receiving a crash-course in the art - and science - of magic, Dave must find the confidence within himself to defeat the bad guy, get the girl and save the day. Of course, Dave also decides to take a few shortcuts during his training which results in a mishap involving several mops and other cleaning supplies that mirrors the classic cartoon. Watching the scene come to life is an enchanting experience that AZWeeklyMagazine.com

‘Standing Ovation’, a musical for middle school age kids! Interview by Stan Robinson Musical theme films have always been favorites for moviegoers from the early days of Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire in the 30’s - 50’s, ‘Fame’ (1980) the hit movie and the TV series (1982) for the next generation, and the Oscar® nominated ‘Nine’ (2009) proved that the musical is alive and well today. The one thing in common, these musicals’ audience is the young adult. Writer/director Stewart Raffill’s latest ‘Standing Ovation’ focuses on the 5 to 15 year olds of today who enjoy the aspects of signing, dancing, and performing! Why the younger audience, using non-actors but real kids, featuring over 20 songs and spending 6 months writing them? The younger talented kids of today appealed to Stewart, recognizing their exuberance, fearlessness, and excitement at simply performing! In our conversation Stewart shares insight on bringing ‘Standing Ovation’ from concept to completion. “The longest and the hardest aspect was

finding all the songs, commissioning them, rewriting some of them to make them child appropriate. There are 20 original songs in the film which is a huge amount and 5 cover songs like ‘Under the Boardwalk’, ‘Splish Splash I Was Taking a Bath’, and, ‘God Bless America which is actually owned by the Irving Berlin family and the proceeds from that always goes to the boys camps which is very interesting, and a couple Frank Sinatra songs!” say’s Stewart. It took Stewart over a year to bring ‘Standing Ovation’ to the screen, which involved casting the young performers, rehearsals, planning the shooting of each of the songs performed, and so much more. Be sure to visit www.ScreenScene.org for the very special visit with writer/director Stewart Raffill and his latest ‘Standing Ovation’! ‘Kids Are All Right’ illustrates fascinating family portrait Review By Joseph J. Airdo Director Lisa Cholodenko’s new dramatic comedy “The Kids Are All Right” speaks with poignancy about the complexities that we face in our own day-to-day lives. Cholodenko’s strength lies within her ability to capture emotional turning points in such a way that the audi-

Annette Bening and Julianne Moore star as a married same-sex couple who share a home with their teenage children (Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson). They live fairly happy lives until the children, conceived by artificial insemination, contact their biological father Paul (Mark Ruffalo) – an act that complicates an already complex situation. What begins as a fascinating family portrait develops a daytime serial vibe that feels like the easy way out. On the other hand, the ways in which the filmmakers handle the situation – including a frighteningly accurate portrayal of the exact moment of devastation – offer redemption. Moreover, Bening’s performance is nothing short of Oscar material. One’s eyes feel compelled to watch her face’s every action and reaction. Then again, there is a lot more to like here, too. Like the family it portrays, “The Kids Are All Right” may not be perfect but it is loving enough to make it through the difficult times. Read Joseph J. Airdo’s full reviews of “The Kids Are All Right” and other movies at Examiner.com/ Phoenix.

questionable past on the hunt for a missing mental patient. He is now taking on the role in director Christopher Nolan’s piece about a corporate espionage thief who can enter the mind of an individual during the dream state, it seems as if DiCaprio may be on a familiar course. That is not necessarily the case. Inception has received early buzz as an Oscar contender, which is more typical of films that Leonardo stars in than a specific genre. Critical acclaim has followed the actor on numerous occasions, securing him a Golden Globe win for The Aviator and three Academy Award nominations. Audiences and critics alike have praised such films as What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Basketball Diaries, Total Eclipse and Catch Me If You Can. Having the lead romantic role in one of the biggest films ever made (Titanic) certainly has helped make him a star and a household name. With such humble beginnings as a homeless teen on ABC’s hit sitcom Growing Pains during the 1991-1992 season, Leonardo DiCaprio has won the hearts of adoring fans, garnered praise from critics worldwide and has been much sought after by the Get the free mobile app at industry’s http:/ / gettag.mobi most respected directors.

“THE LOSERS” “COP OUT”

Tracy Morgan and Bruce Willis (l-r)

14

July 15th, 2010 - July 21st, 2010 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Independent-film favorite Kevin Smith (“Clerks”) is an interesting choice as director for this buddycop tale, which ultimately holds more to the conventions of the genre than one might anticipate from Smith’s involvement. A staple of this type of movie, Bruce Willis is teamed with Tracy Morgan (“30 Rock”) to play suspended police partners on the trail of a very special trading card. Owned by Willis’ character, it’s meant to finance his daughter’s wedding. When it’s stolen, the chase is on. Seann William Scott, Adam Brody (“The O.C.”), Jason Lee, Michelle Trachtenberg and Kevin Pollak are in the supporting cast. DVD extras: deleted scenes. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

Beating “The A-Team” at its own game by reaching theaters first this year, this comic-book-based adventure follows another group of troubleshooters out to even the score with those who did them wrong. Jeffrey Dean Morgan (“Watchmen”) plays the leader of this squad, left to its own inventions in the jungles of Bolivia by a larcenous government agent (Jason Patric). Chris Evans (“Fantastic Four”), Idris Elba and Columbus Short portray other members of the group, with Zoe Saldana as an eventual ally they cross paths with. DVD extras: three “making-of” documentaries; deleted scene. ››› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray) “THE RUNAWAYS” Kristen Stewart makes an effective departure from her “Twilight” image to play Joan Jett, the rock star who fronted the title band before having wider success as lead singer of the Blackhearts, in this well-acted drama. Dakota Fanning and Scout Taylor-Compton portray fellow Runaways members Cherie Currie and Lita Ford, whose personalities combined with Jett’s to make the group combustible both on and off stage. Michael Shannon (“Revolutionary Road”) appears as the band’s manager. Tatum O’Neal also is in the cast. DVD extras: two “making-of” documentaries; audio commentary by Stewart, Fanning and the real Joan Jett. ››› (R: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray)

“Cast Away” (2000): Considering his sole co-star for much of the film is a volleyball, Hanks’ talent is invaluable to this saga of a courier company executive stranded on an island by a plane crash.

critics’ choice

“Saving Private Ryan” (1998): Under Oscar winner Steven Spielberg’s direction, Hanks is the perfect everyman in representing a U.S. soldier in charge of others amid the horrors of World War II. “Forrest Gump” (1994): Hanks earned his second Oscar as he took the iconic title character through encounters with others real and fictional.

“Winning the lottery is like throwing Miracle-Gro on your character defects.” The person who speaks those words in “Lucky,” airing Monday, July 19, on HBO, is not a lottery winner, but he’s well acquainted with one. He employs Buddy, one-time winner of $16 million, as an errand boy and rents him a small dwelling. The story of Buddy, who squandered his winnings and became the target of a hit man for reneging on a promise to share his wealth with his siblings, is the saddest one in the documentary, which tells several lottery winners’ stories. Quang, a Vietnamese “boat person,” shared a $365 million jackpot with seven co-workers.

He’s used his winnings to set up his children in homes and businesses and help his family in Vietnam. Robert, a mathematician who won $22 million, fantasized about owning a Lamborghini but realized that “one enjoys possessions the most that one works for.” He drives a Volvo, has endowed a chair at his university and tutors children. Steve and Kristine, winners of $110 million, have been generous with their riches but have found it hard to make and keep friends. Even after moving to an affluent area, Kristine says, when people learn the source of their wealth, “all of a sudden, we’re our own species.”

Nick and Dylan (Frank Grillo, Luke Mably) try to put their differences aside during a father-daughter dance. An unexpected secret turns things upside down for Andie and Charlie (Skyler Samuels, Travis Caldwell) in the new episode “The Monster Within.” THE GLADES Sunday at 10 p.m. on H A&E While helping Callie’s (Kiele Sanchez) son, Jeff (Uriah Shelton), collect bugs in a heavily wooded area for a school science project, Jim (Matt Passmore) finds an abandoned airplane with a dead body inside, the remains of a retired Special Ops member who taught flight school on the side to earn extra money, in the new episode “Bird in the Hand.”

BY MICHAEL KORB

This is a combination we hadn’t thought of for building a great TV show: murder, humidity and golf. And yet it seems to work beautifully on “The Glades,” airing Sundays on A&E Network. Detective Jim Longworth (Matt Passmore) is great at solving murders, but his short game could use some work. So after he is shot by his captain in Chicago (because of a slight misunderstanding), he relocated to sleepy Palm Glade, Fla., to work on his irons. Unfortunately (and surprisingly), the South Florida residents don’t seem to be dying of old age, and he must actually work on a regular basis. Yep, the recipe for quality television. So if you love murder, Florida and working your slice to its advantage on a dogleg right, call your friends; we’re partying to “The Glades.”

BE THE CHEF IN YOUR BACKYARD WITH HOTOFF-THE-GRILL TECHNIQUES FROM LE CORDON BLEU Make Grilling An Art With Tips And Recipes From Master Chef Edward G. Leonard Long known for culinary excellence, the Le Cordon Bleu Schools in North America invite home-chefs to spend the summer in epicurean style with fresh recipes and insider tips from its Master Chef Edward G. Leonard, Certified Master Chef (CMC). These exclusive recipes and grill guidelines will help chefs contemporize summer menus with innovative ideas that stand out from standard grilled meals. According to Master Chef Edward, summer dining is all about simplicity – but that does not mean sacrificing culinary creativity. He suggests skipping ordinary hamburgers and instead, grilling an Italian Burger with Roasted Pepper & Tomato Relish, Pan-Fried Eggplant, and Ricotta Cream or a Short Rib & Mushroom Burger with Demi BBQ Sauce. For more upscale summer soirees, dishes like Grilled Duckling Breast with Lentil Ragout offer a departure from the average barbeque fare. “Think quality over quantity – hamburgers and hot dogs have their place, but surprise your guests with something different,” says Master Chef Edward. “By selecting one or two great grilled dishes, backyard chefs can really showcase creativity and surpass guests’ expectations with exciting flavor combinations and a unique seasonal menu.”

Master Chef Edward also suggests developing summer menus with simple, portable food items. For example, a hot and cold contrast is the key to successful grilled dishes like Grilled Lamb Kabobs over a salad of romaine, feta, tomatoes, and olives with an oregano dressing. Served as a one-plate meal, grilled proteins with salad accoutrements provide the ultimate backyard meal. A few tips for mastering the grill: Fire up the Grill - Turn on the grill and set heat on high (500 F) for five to 10 minutes before cooking and be sure to “season” the grill by brushing the grates with oil to prevent sticking. When grilling with charcoal, be sure to let the coals burn for at least 30 minutes or until they are coated with a white ash before cooking. Cooked to Perfection - When cooking chicken, place on the hottest part of the grill and sear for three minutes on each side. Then, move to indirect heat and baste with marinade frequently. Chicken is done when the meat is white and juices are clear. Catch of the Day - The best way to cook fish on the grill is with a grill basket or flat plate to keep delicate fillets intact. Don’t forget to oil and heat the basket before placing fish inside. Red Hot Grill - To properly grill red meat, sear it on the highest temperature and then, place over lower heat to get the meat to desired doneness. Before and After - For maximum taste, season your grill selections before grilling and just prior to removal. Once cooked, allow meat or fish one to two minutes to “relax” while the juices flow and the flavor sets in. This is also a good time to brush on a glaze, a barbecue sauce or flavored oil, and then serve with complementary side dishes. The Manic Organic So what are you doing personally to go “organic”? As I mentioned in a previous column, I started eating organic fruits. Just one day decided to start buying and consuming organic fruits. Over the course of several weeks and months I began to crave fruits and this consciously evolved into wanting other types of organics milk, eggs, meats - and I slowly but surely began going purely organic, or at the very least to seek out healthy, natural and preservative-free foods. Now when I go out to eat I certainly am conscious as to where I dine and most importantly what I order off the menu. Beginning an organic path takes time and conscious effort. Start small, begin with a single focus and you will soon train your mind to seek out the better foods for your body. Make the effort, it will be worth it and you will feel better for it - go organic. - MO

BEER! SECTION 24

BEER! Special Report – Event Update This article was originally supposed to be about putting together your own light rail pub crawl…and we’ll get to that eventually. But I started hearing about some new and old events that were coming up over the next few months and thought it best to get the word out on some of these so everybody can get them on their calendar. Light rail fans, don’t worry, we’ll get that article done later in the summer. For now, if you want to do a light rail pub crawl, here is the basic version. Go to Central and Camelback, you can start at Sun Up Brewing, located at 3rd and Camelback, hop on the light rail, hop off the light rail every couple of stops, find a bar, have a beer, hop back on the light rail and repeat until you reach the end (of the light rail line or your day, whichever comes first). Either ride the light rail back to your starting point or end it wherever your final stop is. Regardless, make sure you have transportation home. Just because you can ride the light rail while you’re drinking doesn’t mean that you still don’t have to find a way home. We’ll even throw in a bonus stop for you…get off at Washington

and Priest and backtrack a couple of blocks to the Draw 10 at 54th Street. They have new ownership, a great beer lineup, including six local beers, and a kitchen that is putting out some fine food. That’s all for now on the light rail. We’ll talk more later. So what is it about upcoming events that causes a major magazine such as AZ Weekly to trash their entire editorial schedule to insert this special report? How about the sheer quantity of first time events, big and small, coming to this state? That seems reason enough for me. We’ll look at single night events, small events, beer dinners, full day events, a couple of longstanding events, and maybe even a little tease about some of the most exciting news in Arizona beer in a long time. So lock your doors and throw away the kids…that should be hide the kids, and throw away the keys…this may be more than any one person can take over a period of just a few months. Don’t worry; we’ll do our best to survive through October. How about you join us? By the time this comes out on Thursday, we will have just missed a beer dinner the night before at Rare Earth Wine and Coffee Bar. This isn’t just to rub it in your face that you missed a great event, but to point out another location that is getting in to pairing

showing up statewide. And he might have a little surprise announcement for you folks that prefer to do your drinking at home, or while camping, or boating, or anywhere that isn’t a bar.

food and beer. If you missed that one, don’t miss the beer dinner on July 22nd at Trader Vics in the Hotel Valley Ho. San Tan Brewing will

be the featured beer and Chef Justin Pfeilsticker is preparing a meal that features Blackened Ahi, Hawaiian Blue Prawn Vol au Vent, Chinese Oven Roasted Short Ribs and Flourless Chocolate Toffee Torte, all paired with the perfect beer from the San Tan lineup. I suspect Head Brewer Anthony Canecchia will be in great form that night as he will be celebrating the launch of full distribution of his beers. Now you won’t have to be in Chandler any more to enjoy San Tan’s offerings. Look for them to start

Over the past few months you may have noticed that Yucca Tap Room has gone from more than just a great local bar with great music. They have added a third great…beer. Yucca features 16 draft beers and around 150 cans and bottles for your enjoyment, many of them fine craft beers. They were one of only a handful of bars in the state to get the very limited release of Bear Republic Crazy Ivan. They are offering a special event the third Monday of every month. Look for Christmas in July followed by Cider Spectacular, featuring exContinued on Page 25...

tremely rare kegs (only 25 of each in the entire USA) of Crispin Bonnie and Clyde, two barrel aged ciders; and Oktoberfest. Another great, relatively new beer bar, for you folks in North Phoenix, is Mellow Mushroom at Happy Valley and I-17. From

July 15th to October 15th, they will be running Mellow Mushroom Gives Back. This ongoing event features virtually the entire lineup of Abita Brewing beers and Mellow Mushroom will donate 25 cents from every Abita product sold to benefit Gulf Coast relief efforts. Look for extra special nights on August 19th, September 16th and October 14th.

Beer people are basically good people and charity is always important to them. But on October 2nd the Beer for Brains Foundation is going to outdo just about every charitable event ever held in this state. That’s when the Off Centered Experience hits the Scottsdale Plaza Resort. This event, with Dogfish Head Brewing as its primary sponsor, is a fundraiser for the Barrow Brain Tumor Research Center. Besides just about every beer Dogfish brews, event organizers are putting together an all star lineup which will include many specialty beers and limited production items, both from instate and out-of-state brewers. They are even contacting many breweries that heretofore have never had beer

available in Arizona and asking them to send a little treat for everybody supporting this event. Could we possibly see something from Florida, Hawaii, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania or even Northern California? Only time will tell. You can get more information at the Foundation’s Facebook page, or at www.brownpapertickets.com. At the latter web page you can also purchase general admission tickets. VIP tickets will be offered at a later date. A couple of other upcoming events which are still in the formative stages are an event to be held on September 11th at Ashley Manor in Chandler to benefit families of first responders lost during the terrorist attacks; and The Beat the Heat Winter Fest to be held at The Venue of Scottsdale. The Winter Fest will bring a little cold to the hottest part of the year and looks to be a good time. More details at www.beattheatwinterfest.com. Finally, the biggest beer event of the year anywhere in the country takes place from September 16th through the 18th in Denver. A short plane ride from Phoenix, Denver will host the Great American Beer Festival. For beer lovers, this is something you must do at least once in your life. Hotel rooms and tickets sell quickly, so secure yours now at www.greatamericanbeerfestival.com. We will have a little preview of the event later in the Summer to give you some guidance on enjoying the event. One last thing, we promised you a little tease about a big event, so here it is…keep your calendars wide open from September 25th through October 2nd. We hear rumors that something special might be going on in Arizona regarding Craft Beer that whole Week. Nothing definite yet, but I would hate to be out of town if the rumors are true. Thus ends another week of Beer! In AZ Weekly. I don’t know how much fun the other sections are having, but I can assure you, that we have the most fun of all here in our little section. So keep your schedule open and enjoy some good beers this upcoming week.

It was only a spring training game two years ago, but it was the anticipated debut of David Price nonetheless, and the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2007 didn’t disappoint, showcasing a blazing fastball in striking out the side against the New York Yankees. If that wasn’t enough to assure Tampa Bay it made the right choice in picking Price, all questions about his major league readiness were answered months later when the big lefty, on the biggest stage, helped get the Rays into the World Series by shutting down the Boston Red Sox as a late-game reliever in the American League Championship Series.

FULL NAME: David Taylor Price BIRTHPLACE: Nashville, Tenn. BIRTH DATE: Aug. 26, 1985 ROAD TO STARDOM: After a standout high-school career during which he compiled a 0.43

ERA and 151 strikeouts, Price was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 19th round in 2004 but chose to attend Vanderbilt University, where he pitched for three seasons before the Rays picked him No.1.

St. Andrews, perhaps the most sacred ground in all of golf, first hosted the Open in 1873, and will host the tournament for the 28th time. Golf’s best, including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Ernie Els, Lee Westwood, Steve Stricker and 2009 Open champion Stewart Cink compete for the famed Claret Jug.

9:30 a.m. on / KNXV Canada’s largest city is the scene as IndyCar heads north of the border for two races starting with today’s Honda Indy Toronto. In last year’s race, its first as an IndyCar event after years in CART/Champ Car, Dario Franchitti won from pole on the 1.75-mile, 11-turn temporary street course to finish 1.67 seconds ahead of Ryan Briscoe. It was the Scotsman’s third victory of the year on his way to the IndyCar championship. He’ll return to defend his title.

10 a.m. on 0 TBS In the New York Yankees’ quest for World Series title No. 28, they’ll have to beat rivals in the American League East such as their opponents today in New York, the Tampa Bay Rays. Robinson Cano and the Bombers haven’t had an easy go of it so far this year against Carl Crawford and the Rays, losing three of five meetings. And they’ve been high-scoring affairs, too, averaging better than 12 runs per game, rather odd for two teams built around pitching.

THE BEST TEQUILA BARS BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW...

Join us for our

PREMIER MARGARITA MENU

Why Do We Call It “Tequila”? When the Spanish arrived in the 16th century, the Mexicans had already been making an alcoholic drink distilled from the Blue Agave plant, for a long time. The name “tequila” comes from the conquistadores who discovered that agave grew on a small mountain whose silhouette reminded them of a woman’s breast… and so they christened the mountain “tetilla.” Gradually the word became corrupted into “tequila,” and the name was later given to a town in Jalisco where the agave plants were grown. So, when drinking tequila, be thankful for women, breasts and conquering hoards of Spaniards.

MARTINI

Best Martini Bars Directory

ROGER MOORE - Never ordered a Martini as Bond but did so 8 years prior in the series, The Saint. Sean Connery was the first Bond to actually order the drink in a movie in 1962’s Dr. No. To Shake Or Stir... Your father’s classic martini was not shaken but stirred, “so as not to bruise the gin,” while James Bond from the Ian Fleming novels ordered his “shaken, not stirred”, a drink properly called a Bradford. In the novel Casino Royale, Bond’s recipe is actually spelled out in more detail as being comprised of 3 measures of gin (Gordon’s was Bond’s favorite), 1 measure of vodka (Russian or Polish is preferred), and half a measure of Kina Lillet aperitif, shaken until ice-cold, and with a large, thin slice of lemon peel for garnish (properly called a “Vesper” after his love interest in the book). By the second Bond novel, Live and Let Die, Bond was drinking vodka martinis, a trend that continued when 007 moved to the screen in 1962.

Tickets Still Available for LeAnn Rimes’ Saturday, July 17th Concert Multiple Grammy-award winning singer LeAnn Rimes heads to the intimate Celebrity Theatre at 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 17th.

46

Country music’s LeAnn Rimes is best known for her rich vocals similar to legendary country singer Patsy Cline. She rose to fame at the age of 13, becoming the youngest country music star since Tanya Tucker in 1972. Her debut album, Blue, reached #1 on the Top Country Albums chart and was certified “multi-platinum” in sales. When Rimes released her next album You Light up My Life: Inspirational Songs, Rimes went to more country pop material, which would set the trend for a string of successful albums. Since her debut, Rimes has won two Grammy Awards, including the first Best New Artist accolade ever won by a country artist. July 15th, 2010 - July 21st, 2010

She has sold more than 37 million records, won an American Music Award, 12 Billboard Awards, and received three Academy of Country Music honors. She has scored numerous hit singles, among them One Way Ticket, I Need You, Nothin Better To do, Probably Wouldn’t Be This Way, Can’t Fight The Moonlight which was a #1 song in 11 countries, and How Do I Live, which was the longest running single ever on the Billboard Hot 100, spending a record-setting 69 weeks on the chart. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; theatre doors open at 7:00 p.m.; show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets ($40, $55, $65) are still available at Celebrity Theatre or online at www.celebritytheatre.com. To charge by phone, call 602-2671600 ext.1. All tickets are subject to a surcharge. Celebrity Theatre is conveniently located on 32nd St., just 4 blocks south of the Loop 202 freeway, in Phoenix.

GET YOUR STING AND BLACKOUT!

Tuesday, July 27 at Dodge Theater SCORPIONS are getting ready to kick off the two-month North American leg of their “Get Your Sting and Blackout” farewell world tour this summer. The German rockers will be coming to DODGE THEATER in PHOENIX on TUESDAY, JULY 27 with Tesla supporting as they celebrate the success of their new and final album Sting in the Tail. Released March 23 via Universal Music Enterprises, Sting in the Tail entered the Billboard Top 200 charts at #23, marking the band’s highest chart debut in over 20 years, and continues to receive critical praise. “Raised on Rock”—the album’s anthemic first single—hit the #1 spot at classic rock radio and adds to their remarkable list of hits including “Rock You Like a Hurricane,” “Wind of Change,” and “No One Like You.” As one of the most successful rock bands in the world, the Scorpions-KLAUS MEINE (vocals), MATTHIAS JABS (lead guitar), RUDOLF

SCHENKER (guitar), JAMES KOTTAK (drums) and PAWEL MACIWODA (bass)--will be celebrating 40+ years in music during this final outing. Known for their mega, arena hard rock, these rockers have sold over 100 million records, received multiple gold and platinum albums, earned the ECHO’s “Honorary Award” for lifetime achievement (the German comparison of the Grammy’s) and most recently were recently inducted into RockWalk at Guitar Center in Hollywood, CA, the only sidewalk gallery dedicated to honoring those artists who have made a significant impact and lasting contribution to the growth and evolution of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Blues, and R&B.

One thing that EA Sports has done well with its NCAA Football franchise is the level of realism. From fight songs to mascots, each and every school in the game has been lovingly re-created for video game sports fans to enjoy, and “NCAA Football 11” is no different. In EA’s latest, the first thing you’ll notice is a return to realism with each of the 120 included schools boasting unique offenses and defenses, coaching styles, stadiums, and traditions. Once the actual football begins, you’ll be treated to precision controls that will have you manipulating the players in new and exciting ways, which includes updated run mechanics, double-team blocking and running lanes.

About Johnny Lee: Johnny Lee Ham was born in 1946 in Texas City, Texas. His 1980 single, Lookin’ for Love not only spent three weeks at the top of the Billboard country singles chart in the second half of 1980 but also went to the Top 5 on the Pop charts, and Top 10 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary survey. Lee grew up on a dairy farm, formed a rock band in high school, and served a tour of duty with the U.S. Navy on the USS Chicago, a guided missile cruiser. After his discharge, he played cover tunes in Texas nightclubs and bars through the 1960s. He worked 10 years with Mickey Gilley both on tour and at Gilley’s Club in Pasadena, Texas. The 1980 hit movie Urban Cowboy was largely shot at Gilley’s, and it was the soundtrack from the movie that catapulted Lee to fame. The record spawned several hit singles, one of which was Lee’s Lookin’ for Love. Lee had four other songs reach the top of the Billboard Magazine Hot Country Singles Chart: One in a Million (1980); Bet Your Heart on Me (1981); The Yellow Rose (1984, a duet with Lane Brody and the theme song to the NBC TV series of the same name); and You Could Have Heard a Heartbreak (1984). His other major hits include Pickin’ Up Strangers (1981), Prisoner of Hope (1981); Cherokee Fiddle, Sounds Like Love, and Hey Bartender, (1983); and Rollin’ Lonely and Save the Last Chance (1985).

THE BEST NAMES IN CIGARS

PUFF! Lady Jasmine Cigar Diva Traditionally, the cigar has been paired with a strong drink. Popular spirits include rum, brandy, or whiskey. Some argue that a good cigar should always be paired with a strong drink that has a hint of sweetness. Indeed, cigar smokers have long enjoyed these popular pairings.

Full Cigar Lounge

Because cigars are so strong and flavorful, one of the challenges in pairing is to find a beverage that complements the intensity of most cigars. Most cigars will pair nicely with a good wine or a single malt scotch. If your cigar can be described as woody, spicy, with hints of cedar, try pairing it with a barley wine. The fruity hint of barley wine should complement nicely with the spicy flavor of your cigar. The combination of a spicy cigar with a slightly fruity beer can create an overall creaminess that enhances the flavors of each significantly.
