13th ANNUAL NEW WORKS FESTIVAL at the Phoenix Theatre. Daniel Schay and the production team at the Phoenix Theatre are presenting another wonderful festival of new plays with playwrights interacting with theatrical audiences at the 13th annual Hormel New Works Festival from July 9th to August 1st. Founded by Richard Warren and Mark DeMichele, this festival is an important vehicle for playwrights to explore and develop their scripts into living productions by adding actors, lighting, and off course an audience to listen and share their experiences with the playwrights and directors. As staged readings, these productions are a fascinating look at the characters and storyline playwrights toy with to polish the edges of some great new drama. Included in this year’s festival is a play titled LIVING IN THE SPACES, by Rod Hayward. Directed with insight by Daniel Schay, and performed by Pasha Yamotahari as piano teacher William Betts, with Brittany Bradford as the talented young piano student Margaret Cunningham. This was a dynamic play which revealed the dangers and blessings of a teacher-student relationship over a decade of rehearsals and revelations. Rod’s play is a gentle brush filled with strokes of music and emotions between two people whose love endures. Kudos to Pasha and Brittany for a sweet portrayal of two souls finding their true pathways in life. Let’s hope this play can get some legs in the future. Lovett’s most recent album, Natural Forces, is a testament to both his versatile songwriting and peerless ability to interpret the music of fellow songwriters who have inspired him, including Eric Taylor, Vince Bell, Robert Earl Keen and Townes Van Zandt. Winter’s Bone From The Ozarks to Potential Oscars By Randy Montgomery Director Debra Granik’s Winter’s Bone is based on the novel of the same name by Daniel Woodrell. The story follows teenager Ree Dolly (Jennifer Lawrence), who lives in a small Southern Missouri community. Her mother has passed away and her father has gone missing. Clues point to murder and Ree challenges family members and townsfolk to unravel the clues while struggling to raise her siblings and save her home. Shot in Forsyth, Missouri, Granik and crew utilized local talent for the supporting cast. Granik explains, “We went to churches, schools and community events. It’s an outstanding place to meet performers of everyday life. We had a rich talent base in the community.” They also looked for people that had “an intense sense about them. They helped with the out of state actors, integrating and immersing them into the local culture.” Adding to the realness on screen was the way the story was captured with documentary techniques. “The

camera followed the actors and let them move naturally. The film adapts to the circumstances.” Despite being written by a local author, the tough subject matter required “significant discussion” according to Granik with the locals. “The meth content was the most problematic. In Southern Missouri, the meth problem had hit really hard and had made a lot of press. We were asked, ‘Is there any way to tell the story without the meth in it?’” What ended up garnering the support from the community? “The story was complex enough to be worthy and we had a concurrence from the people in the area,” says Granik. “Ree was starring down a sociological problem. She lost her dad, her uncle is caught up in a tough situation, but Ree Dolly depicts a teen girl who is disturbingly aware of what it’s taking from her family. She had a heroic quality to her that represents the region well. She’s a muse for a survivor. She had a life force in her that won’t let people down. These were characteristics of the novel that people could stand behind.” The overwhelming response from Sundance and the critical acclaim the film has garnered since slowly opening in markets nationwide has Granik declare, “It’s an act of defiance after four years of people telling you ‘no,’ and that despite it being an American story, “’that it was deemed too difficult, too dark, too grim for the rest of the country.’” Winter’s Bone is a must-see and is deserving of multiple award nominations including Best Picture, Director, Cinematography, Actress (Lawrence) and Supporting Actress (Dale Dickey). ** Jennifer Lawrence’s performance in ‘Winter’s Bone’ conveys a powerful story of a girl’s determination to find her father, save their house, and discover the truth amid the secrecy of the Ozark Mountain inhabitants at great risk to her own life. South of the Border By Randy Montgomery Director Oliver Stone loves political subjects, directing such films as JFK, Nixon and W. This time with South of the Border, instead of creating a biopic, he’s turned to documentary filmmaking which is even more onesided that his feature films. For years, American presidents have labeled South America’s leaders such as Hugo Chavez, Evo Morales and others as evil dictators. Stone travels to Venezuela, Bolivia, Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Ecuador and Cuba to prove to American audiences these “feared dictators” are actually lovable teddy bears who have turned their nations around and have collaborated to form a powerful union that does not need America’s support or approval. While a fascinating look at those normally portrayed in negative light in the mainstream media, whether you believe Stone’s take is purely up for personal interpretation during the compact running time of under 80 minutes.

“CLASH OF THE TITANS” Though it was shown in 3-D in some theaters, that process was added after the movie had been completed, so this remake of the sandals-andsorcery epic doesn’t lose much visually on video. It also doesn’t have Ray Harryhausen’s special-effects wizardry, as the 1981 edition did, but the story gets “Kraken” as Perseus (Sam Worthington) deals with such legends as Zeus (Liam Neeson) and Hades (Ralph Fiennes) – not to mention numerous mythical creatures – as he tries to prevent dark forces from ruling the world. The Manic Organic Today I want to share an experience I had the other day while dining at one of my favorite local eateries. It had to do with the server and the lack of knowledge she was able to dispense at some basic questions I asked of her regarding their food. It was quite elementary, really. I just wanted to know where the food came from that they served - seeking something local is always on my mind. She didn’t have a clue. No idea. Not even a guess. Then I asked if a particular meal was organic, which is as you might have guessed is my MO. Again, she was not certain, but at least she did say that she thought it was. I determined that I wouldn’t bother to see if she knew if any of the food served contained preservatives. The point being - all restaurants that promote clean, organic and preservativefree meals should have basic training for their staff so they understand what they are serving their customers. Not a big deal to the server, but it should be a really big deal to you, the customer. Give it shot next time ask your server a few questions. - MO

When Anthony Canecchia, Owner and Head Brew Master of SanTan Brewing Company, first opened his brewery in 2007, it was always in the back of his mind that one day he would be more than just a local neighborhood restaurant. Now that dream is coming true. Distribution represents an opportunity for a brewery to really hit the big time as Canecchia well knows from his days as an assistant brewer at Four Peaks. While SanTan has always self distributed their products, it was mostly limited geographically.

The distribution deal coincides with SanTan’s facility expansion, which includes the installation of a CASK Automatic Canning System Model 3.5 – to be complete by the end of July. The can-

ning system is capable of producing thirty 12-ounce cans per minute. The company will begin canning its four core brands within 6 months: Hopshock IPA and Epicenter American Amber, Devil’s West Coast Pale Ale and HefeWeizen Wheat. And, the addition of can options from SanTan provides even more opportunity for local beer to show up at golf courses, boating trips and campsites. Supporting local breweries isn’t just good for the local economy, its good for overall beer diversity. So the next time you are considering your beer choices, look at the Arizona made products and try one of those. By all means continue to drink your favorite out of state beers as well. Richard Villa Raised in the urban city of Compton, California, Richard Villa always knew he wanted to make people laugh. While driving home one night, the neon lights of the Irvine Improv called his name - “Hey Richard!” Seizing the moment of amateur night, Richard grabbed the microphone, went on stage, and has not stopped since. Using stories of his childhood, Richard Villa turned basic experiences into autobiographical satirical humor that depict life for Latinos and other minorities in the United States. With his comedy and thorough understanding of his audience, Villa became the first Latino to ever host the renowned Hollywood Improv on Friday nights. His ability to appeal to the audience earned him a special invitation by the U.S. Military to perform for the troops on the “Combat Comedy Tour” which included Iraq, Unit, May, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Djibouti, and Saudi Arabia. In 2005, Vanguard Cinema released Richard’s 1st DVD, called “Richard Villa: Performing This Way.” Now being hailed as “the leader” for the new generation of Latino Comics, Richard Villa exemplifies dedication to making other people laugh.

“30 Rock” fans know him mainly for his hilarious work as harried producer Pete Hornberger, but these days Scott Adsit is focusing primarily on “Mary Shelley’s Frankenhole,” a macabre stop-motion animation comedy series airing Sundays in Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim lineup. The series, inspired by longtime Adsit collaborator Dino Stamatopoulos’ obsessive affection for the vintage Universal monster movies, was greenlit by Cartoon Network after the channel canceled the duo’s previous project, “Moral Orel,” after three seasons. “Our concept is that Dr. Frankenstein is now immortal, because he had discovered the secrets of life and death,” Adsit explains, “and he is kind of bored, so he sets up these time portals, or Frankenholes, out on the lawn of the castle, so people from history can come to him and ask him for advice and help and general surgical things. For example, we have LBJ arriving on the castle doorsteps with the body of JFK in a bag, and he wants his brain put into JFK’s body so he can be a more attractive and effective leader – but mostly so he can (make love to) Marilyn Monroe. So our pop culture references aren’t going to be Tom Cruise as much as Ron Howard and Gandhi and Elke Sommer.” Adsit first met his “30 Rock” boss Tina Fey when they both were working at Chicago’s fabled Second City comedy troupe. “Tina was quiet,” Adsit recalls. “I remember the first time I saw her, she was in this huge parka and big glasses and short hair, kind of mousy. She joined our cast and was polite and took it slow, but when she finally hit the ground, she was running, and she became a very creative force in that group of six actors. American sailor Jerry Collins was a critical figure in reinventing and introducing tattoos in the middle class in the 1970s and 1980s. Sailor Jerry wanted to improve the Western style, which he saw as primitive and abrupt, and started to use the style, colors, and imagery of Japanese tattooing as well as their belief that the entire body acts as a canvas. He argued that the Japanese’s sophisticated and spiritual style could move the American tattoo from is “primitive” state to a credible art form.

Japan: Tattoo Imagery and Sophistication While tattooing diminished in the West, it had ancient and pervasive roots in the Pacific where it held a significant cultural significance. The Ainu traditionally wore facial tattoos and likely imported the practice into Japan. Indeed, ancient Japanese clay figures recovered from tombs dating from 3000 B.C. had engraved or tattooed faces and most likely represented living individuals who could accompany the dead on their journey to the underworld. During the Kofun period (A.D. 300-600), facial tattoos took on a negative association and

were used as a form of punishment and to identify the untouchable classes, the hinin and the eta. The modern Japanese tattoo covering the front and back of the torso as well as the arms and legs developed in the Edo period (1600-1800) and was practiced by large segments of the lower class. The imagery and style of the full-body tattoo was probably derived from the Chinese novel Shui-hi Chua (Suikoden in Japanese), which was popular in the early nineteenth century. The versions illustration by Kuniyoshi showed scenes of legendary battle with mythical heroes and warriors that had creatures surrounded by highly stylized waves, wind bars, flowers, cherry blossoms, chrysanthemums, and peonies. Pictures from this novel and from the wood-block prints of that century came to form the iconographic vocabulary for modern Japanese tattooing (DeMello 2000). The fullbody tattoo later was discouraged by Japanese authorities and began to mark questionable groups such as prostitutes and entertainers. These “undesirables” often embellished their own tattoos with images of their own choice, both transforming the tattoo’s original meaning and giving rise to the Irezumi or Yakuza (the criminal underground).
