ARTS! MIM MUSIC THEATER PICK OF THE WEEK Parno Graszt The Musical Instrument Museum Music Theater is proud to welcome Parno Graszt, Hungary’s official ambassadors of authentic Hungarian Gypsy music, for their first North American tour. Cited by many of Eastern Europe’s leading Roma/ Gypsy bands (including Little Cow) as an invaluable and enduring influence, Parno Graszt’s uninhibited, boisterous, and community-oriented shows blur the line between

audience and band, often bursting off the stage as instruments and salutations are passed freely around the room. Summing up the average critic’s response, Simon Broughton (Rough Guide’s ethonographer extraordinaire) stated after an extended weekend in the band’s hometown, “They do not use sources of Gypsy music; they are the source itself.” Purchase tickets online at www. themim.org, in person at MIM, or by calling the MIM Ticket Office at (480) 478-6001. Tannahill Weavers Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) July 23 Friday 7:30 pm The Tannahill Weavers’ diverse repertoire spans the centuries with firedriven instrumentals, topical songs, and original ballads and lullabies. Their music demonstrates to old and young alike the rich and varied musical heritage of the Celtic people. The turmoil of 18th-century Scotland married the mystic beauty of the Celtic music to the coarse, brawling, but vitally human music, poetry, and ballads of the Lowlands. It is precisely this strangely moving yet lustily stirring quality that the Tannahill Weavers have captured in their arrangements of the traditional music and songs of Scotland.

13th ANNUAL NEW WORKS FESTIVAL at the Phoenix Theatre. Daniel Schay and the production team at the Phoenix Theatre are presenting another wonderful festival of new plays with playwrights interacting with theatrical audiences at the 13th annual Hormel New Works Festival from July 9th to August 1st. Founded by Richard Warren and Mark DeMichele, this festival is an important vehicle for playwrights to explore and develop their scripts into living productions by adding actors, lighting, and off course an audience to listen and share their experiences with the playwrights and directors. As staged readings, these productions are a fascinating look at the characters and storyline playwrights toy with to polish the edges of some great new drama. Included in this year’s festival is a play titled LIVING IN THE SPACES, by Rod Hayward. Directed with insight by Daniel Schay, and performed by Pasha Yamotahari as piano teacher William Betts, with Brittany Bradford as the talented young piano student Margaret Cunningham. This was a dynamic play which revealed the dangers and blessings of a teacher-student relationship over a decade of rehearsals and revelations. Rod’s play is a gentle brush filled with strokes of music and emotions between two people whose love endures. Kudos to Pasha and Brittany for a sweet portrayal of two souls finding their true pathways in life. Let’s hope this play can get some legs in the future. There’s more to the special festival this week as Nathan Sanders’ DIVINE FRUIT/KUNDALINI RISING is performed on Friday and Saturday; Dale Wasserman’s BURNING IN THE NIGHT on Sunday: and Scott McCarrey’s ROBOT SONGS on July 30 and 31st. For more information and tickets call 602-254-2151 or online at PhoenixTheatre.com MORE COMING ATTRACTIONS … LYLE LOVETT AND HIS LARGE BAND returns to the valley at the Celebrity Theatre Wednesday July 28th. SINGER-SONGWRITER LYLE LOVETT PERFORMS AT CELEBRITY THEATRE Lyle Lovett and His Large Band July 28, 2010, Wednesday @ 7:30 p.m. Celebrity Theatre, Phoenix Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will present Lyle Lovett and His Large Band on Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. at Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix. Tickets are available for $49 and $59 through the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts Patron Services Box Office at (480) 994-ARTS (2787), ext. 2, or online at www. ScottsdalePerformingArts.org. For nearly three decades, Lyle Lovett has defined the modern Texas singer-songwriter. Fusing blues, country, folk, gospel and jazz, he has created his own style of Americana, defying convention and breaking down barriers along the way. Lovett’s career highlights include four Grammy Awards, 14 albums and more than 4 million records sold. Lovett’s most recent album, Natural Forces, is a testament to both his versatile songwriting and peerless ability to interpret the music of fellow songwriters who have inspired him, including Eric Taylor, Vince Bell, Robert Earl Keen and Townes Van Zandt. Recorded with his legendary Large Band, many of Lovett’s arrangements on Natural Forces are subtle and hauntingly beautiful, while others display his wry sense of humor and penchant for up-tempo arrangements. Lovett’s Large Band is a formidable musical collective that effortlessly transitions from a swinging Texas big band to R&B, uptown jazz and righteous gospel. In addition to his music, Lovett has appeared in 12 feature films, including several directed by the highly acclaimed Robert Altman. He was most recently featured in the documentary For the Sake of the Song: The Story of Anderson Fair, which explores the significant role that the legendary Houston music venue continues to play in preserving American musical traditions. Austin-based vocalist Kat Edmonson will open the concert.

In “Ramona and Beezus,” based on Beverly Cleary’s series of children’s books, Joey King portrays a plucky young girl named Ramona Quimby whose irresistible sense of fun and mischief keeps her big sister Beezus (Selena Gomez) on her toes. The following is a collection of quotes pulled from reviews written by AZ Weekly contributors Joseph J. Airdo, Randy Montgomery and Stan Robinson to present readers with a wider perspective about this new release. Visit Examiner.com/Phoenix and ScreenScene.org to read their full reviews. “‘Ramona and Beezus’ is about a young girl whose imagination constantly runs wild to keep her from becoming bored. Moviegoers who see the unfocused and uneventful AZWeeklyMagazine.com

film will likely experience something quite similar. The movie leaves its audience members - regardless of their age - with no choice but to allow their minds to drift. The flick has a few charming moments but, ultimately, there are way too many things going on and none of it seems to carry any sort of tangible worth.” - Joseph J. Airdo ‘Ramona and Beezus’, with its G rating is just that, appropriate for general audiences! Those who grew up or are growing up with siblings can relate to the two sisters, while those of us who are parents are reminded of the ‘balancing act’ we have to maintain to encourage yet guide each child as their personalities become solid, and as a family of coping with the loss of their dad’s ‘bread winner’s’ income. It’s a delightful look at the serious issues of family, and laughed out-load at ‘Ramona’s antics’! – Stan Robinson

Winter’s Bone From The Ozarks to Potential Oscars By Randy Montgomery Director Debra Granik’s Winter’s Bone is based on the novel of the same name by Daniel Woodrell. The story follows teenager Ree Dolly (Jennifer Lawrence), who lives in a small Southern Missouri community. Her mother has passed away and her father has gone missing. Clues point to murder and Ree challenges family members and townsfolk to unravel the clues while struggling to raise her siblings and save her home. Shot in Forsyth, Missouri, Granik and crew utilized local talent for the supporting cast. Granik explains, “We went to churches, schools and community events. It’s an outstanding place to meet performers of everyday life. We had a rich talent base in the community.” They also looked for people that had “an intense sense about them. They helped with the out of state actors, integrating and immersing them into the local culture.” Adding to the realness on screen was the way the story was captured with documentary techniques. “The

camera followed the actors and let them move naturally. The film adapts to the circumstances.” Despite being written by a local author, the tough subject matter required “significant discussion” according to Granik with the locals. “The meth content was the most problematic. In Southern Missouri, the meth problem had hit really hard and had made a lot of press. We were asked, ‘Is there any way to tell the story without the meth in it?’” What ended up garnering the support from the community? “The story was complex enough to be worthy and we had a concurrence from the people in the area,” says Granik. “Ree was starring down a sociological problem. She lost her dad, her uncle is caught up in a tough situation, but Ree Dolly depicts a teen girl who is disturbingly aware of what it’s taking from her family. She had a heroic quality to her that represents the region well. She’s a muse for a survivor. She had a life force in her that won’t let people down. These were characteristics of the novel that people could stand behind.” The overwhelming response from Sundance and the critical acclaim the film has garnered since slowly opening in markets nationwide has Granik declare, “It’s an act of defiance after four years of people telling you ‘no,’ and that despite it being an American story, “’that it was deemed too difficult, too dark, too grim for the rest of the country.’” Winter’s Bone is a must-see and is deserving of multiple award nominations including Best Picture, Director, Cinematography, Actress (Lawrence) and Supporting Actress (Dale Dickey). ** Jennifer Lawrence’s performance in ‘Winter’s Bone’ conveys a powerful story of a girl’s determination to find her father, save their house, and discover the truth amid the secrecy of the Ozark Mountain inhabitants at great risk to her own life. With very moving dramatic performances, breathtaking cinematography, and a poignant story, its definitely Oscar® bound! - Stan Robinson

South of the Border By Randy Montgomery Director Oliver Stone loves political subjects, directing such films as JFK, Nixon and W. This time with South of the Border, instead of creating a biopic, he’s turned to documentary filmmaking which is even more onesided that his feature films. For years, American presidents have labeled South America’s leaders such as Hugo Chavez, Evo Morales and others as evil dictators. Stone travels to Venezuela, Bolivia, Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Ecuador and Cuba to prove to American audiences these “feared dictators” are actually lovable teddy bears who have turned their nations around and have collaborated to form a powerful union that does not need America’s support or approval. While a fascinating look at those normally portrayed in negative light in the mainstream media, whether you believe Stone’s take is purely up for personal interpretation during the compact running time of under 80 minutes.

Now Playing! ‘Salt’ Angelina Jolie, ‘The 20 Million Woman’

she received $20 million for the role that was originally written for a man! The full article is available at ScreenScene.org And yes, this reviewer is strongly attracted to women in action roles. Other favorites include Milla Jovovich who stars as Alice in the ‘Resident Evil’ franchise films with ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ due later this year, and Kate Beckinsale star of the ‘Underworld’ movie franchise! In ‘Salt’ she’s CIA officer Evelyn Salt and accused of being a Russian spy by a defector. Salt has to ‘go rogue’, using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative to avoid capture. Salt’s efforts to prove her innocence only serve to cast more doubt on her motives, as the hunt to uncover the truth behind her identity continues and the question looms: “Who is Salt?” ‘Salt’ Starring Angelina Jolie, Liev Schreiber, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Daniel Olbrychski, August Diehl, Daniel Pearce, Hunt Block, Andre Braugher, and Olek Krupa. Directed by Phillip Noyce, written by Kurt Wimmer. Columbia Pictures release. Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action. Wonder what movies we movie reviewers look forward to in July? In the sophomore season of the unscripted series “The Colony,” premiering Tuesday, July 27, on Discovery Channel, executive producer Thom Beers (“Deadliest Catch,” “Ice Road Truckers”) again explores what happens when people are left to their own devices after a disaster. When one says “left to their own devices,” one actually means “left to the devices that Beers and his fellow producers supply to them.” This season, Beers headed to Chalmette, La., near New Orleans. Says Beers, “I wanted to get outside. I wanted to get much broader. I took this 14-acre site that was a housing project destroyed by Katrina. The buildings were still standing, but the place was empty.

Burt Reynolds “Not to sound esoteric or anything, but I watch a lot of the History channel. And I do love Turner Classic Movies; I think it’s wonderful. BUSINESS MOVIES Michael “The Moneychangers” (TV, 1976) The ups Douglas and downs of the banking industry get a glossy sheen from producer Ross Hunter (“Airport”) in this miniseries based on Arthur Hailey’s best-seller; Kirk Douglas and Christopher Plummer play competitors for one bank’s presidency. “Wall Street” (1987) Maybe the most famous business-world movie right now – which isn’t hurt by awareness of the upcoming sequel – Oliver Stone’s drama boasts Michael Douglas’ iconic, Oscarwinning work as ruthless Gordon Gekko.

“STARGATE UNIVERSE: 1.5”

“CLASH OF THE TITANS” Though it was shown in 3-D in some theaters, that process was added after the movie had been completed, so this remake of the sandals-andsorcery epic doesn’t lose much visually on video. It also doesn’t have Ray Harryhausen’s special-effects wizardry, as the 1981 edition did, but the story gets “Kraken” as Perseus (Sam Worthington) deals with such legends as Zeus (Liam Neeson) and Hades (Ralph Fiennes) – not to mention numerous mythical creatures – as he tries to prevent dark forces from ruling the world. DVD extras: deleted scenes. ››› (PG-13: AS, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

The freshman season of the Syfy spinoff series continues, with Col. Young (Justin Louis) dealing with problems on a couple of levels. His more personal dilemma involves the aftermath of his decision to leave Dr. Rush (Robert Carlyle, “The Full Monty”) stranded on an arid planet; on a larger scale, he’s concerned about an imminent conflict with citizens who are suspecting the military hasn’t told them all there is to know about their world. DVD extras: “making-of” documentaries; audio commentary by, and interviews with, cast and crew members. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray) “JESSE STONE: NO REMORSE” The sixth in the series of made-for-CBS movies, based on Robert B. Parker novels, returns Tom Selleck to the role of the small-town police chief beset by personal problems. Those increase in this edition as he’s suspended from his job, leaving him free to help probe several murders in Boston ... and to incur the wrath of a mob kingpin (William Sadler, “Roswell”). Selleck co-wrote the script as well. Kathy Baker, William Devane and Saul Rubinek (“Warehouse 13”) also return from earlier “Jesse Stone” stories. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) “SABRINA, THE TEENAGE WITCH: THE FINAL SEASON” A lot changed during this last round of Melissa Joan Hart’s series inspired by the Archie Comics character. Favorites include baked barbecue maple chicken wings; the Berry-Licious salad, made with strawberries, French feta, and homemade organic berry-balsamic dressing; whole wheat and quinoa pastas, such as the Avocado Delish; and over 30 gourmet pizzas, with toppings ranging from locally made chorizo to smoked mozzarella to peppadew and countless build-your-own creations.

Picazzo’s Organic Italian Kitchen in the Camelback Esplanade is the first Picazzo’s restaurant to open at 7 a.m. on weekdays, tailored for the morning business crowd in search of organic espresso or other specialty coffees and frozen drinks. Free Wi-Fi will be available. In addition to its daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner offerings, OHH!, the organic happy hour at Picazzo’s, runs each day from 3-7 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 3-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The half-price organic happy hour menu includes cocktails such as the Ginger’s Hot, made with organic agave nectar, fresh ginger, and Corazon Reposado Tequila; vegan wines; individual pizzas with wheat or gluten-free crust; and appetizers such as preservative-free wings. For the full menu, visit www. picazzos.com. The Camelback Esplanade Picazzo’s Organic Italian Kitchen is at 2501 E. Camelback Rd., Ste. 24, and is open seven days a week, 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday. Rookie restaurateurs face a grueling

‘Challenge’

Ask any restaurateur and he’ll probably tell you that opening a new eatery is so stressful that it can make strong men weep. And that’s with months, maybe even years, to plan it. Now, imagine doing the same thing, from identifying a concept to putting food on the table for customers, in the span of a single day. That’s the gauntlet thrown down for contestants on “24 Hour Restaurant Battle,” the new Wednesday Food Network series in which dueling two-person teams have just 24 hours to accomplish all that, with the finished product being evaluated by a chef, a restaurateur, a food writer and a public relations person.

The Manic Organic Today I want to share an experience I had the other day while dining at one of my favorite local eateries. It had to do with the server and the lack of knowledge she was able to dispense at some basic questions I asked of her regarding their food. It was quite elementary, really. I just wanted to know where the food came from that they served - seeking something local is always on my mind. She didn’t have a clue. No idea. Not even a guess. Then I asked if a particular meal was organic, which is as you might have guessed is my MO. Again, she was not certain, but at least she did say that she thought it was. I determined that I wouldn’t bother to see if she knew if any of the food served contained preservatives. The point being - all restaurants that promote clean, organic and preservativefree meals should have basic training for their staff so they understand what they are serving their customers. Not a big deal to the server, but it should be a really big deal to you, the customer. Give it shot next time ask your server a few questions. - MO

BEER!

The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

This new distribution deal offers the ability for SanTan’s award-winning craft beers to be sold in cans, kegs, torpedo kegs, and growlers at select accounts in Arizona serviced by Crescent Crown, including hotels, resorts, golf courses, bars, restaurants, convenience stores and retail outlets.

San Tan Brewing Has A Plan It’s always exciting when a new brewery comes to town, or when an existing brewery expands its offerings. The latter is the case in the Arizona marketplace as SanTan Brewing out of Chandler has begun distributing through Crescent Crown. Tackling distribution can be a big challenge for a small brewer. There are many things to think about and many

24

changes to be made. Fortunately, SanTan is prepared. When Anthony Canecchia, Owner and Head Brew Master of SanTan Brewing Company, first opened his brewery in 2007, it was always in the back of his mind that one day he would be more than just a local neighborhood restaurant. Now that dream is coming true. Distribution represents an opportunity for a brewery to really hit the big time as Canecchia well knows from his days as an assistant brewer at Four Peaks. While SanTan has always self distributed their products, it was mostly limited geographically.

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

If you noticed the word “cans” in the above paragraph and thought, “SanTan doesn’t have cans,” you were right. Atleast for now. The distribution deal coincides with SanTan’s facility expansion, which includes the installation of a CASK Automatic Canning System Model 3.5 – to be complete by the end of July. The can-

ning system is capable of producing thirty 12-ounce cans per minute. The company will begin canning its four core brands within 6 months: Hopshock IPA and Epicenter American Amber, Devil’s West Coast Pale Ale and HefeWeizen Wheat. Needless to say, SanTan is looking forward to selling beer everywhere in the state. “Crescent Crown is the premier craft beer distributor in the state,” said Canecchia. “The partnership represents a pairing as perfect as pizza and pilsners.” Crescent Crown Distributing is the Continued on Page 25...

fifth-largest distributor in the country, featuring products from Miller, Coors, Corona, New Belgium, Alaskan, Pyramid and several other brands in its portfolio. It also carries a variety of smaller craft brands as well as five other Arizona breweries. Grand Canyon, Sun Up, Sonoran, Papago and Thunder Canyon are already in the portfolio of Crescent Crown’s craft beer division, World Class Beverages. Crescent Crown employs more than 600 people in the Valley. “Crescent Crown is very excited with this partnership,” said Joe Cotroneo, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Crescent Crown Distributing. “Local is in with craft beer, and SanTan is at the forefront, making great beers that more local consumers will get exposed to and enjoy. We are excited to play a role in making SanTan a very familiar name amongst Arizona beer enthusiasts. Our future together is as bright as their award winning Hefeweizen.” What does this mean to the beer scene in the state? More than you might think. A strong local beer community with a large variety of successful local craft breweries is essential for the overall beer culture to thrive. The addition of another brewery to the distribution ranks in the state can only make for a

stronger local beer scene. More bars and restaurants will be encouraged to add more craft beer to their menu and that, in turn, will encourage more craft brewers to sell their product in the state. And, the addition of can options from SanTan provides even more opportunity for local beer to show up at golf courses, boating trips and campsites. Supporting local breweries isn’t just good for the local economy, its good for overall beer diversity. So the next time you are considering your beer choices, look at the Arizona made products and try one of those. By all means continue to drink your favorite out of state beers as well. Whether it be Lost Coast, Breckenridge, Ska, Oskar Blues or any of the other outstanding breweries available in our state, enjoy their beers too. Just make room in your beer fridge for some local beers.

This local microbrewery and restaurant, located in historic downtown Chandler, is currently serving up some of the best beer and food in town! The building was formerly a Valley National Bank and has maintained some of it’s original charm. San Tan’s menu goes beyond the traditional pizza and burgers. They serve a large selection of salads and Mexican fare with an outstanding choice of appetizers. San Tan brews a full range of their own beers, from the Sun Spot Gold to the Gordo Stout, you will not be disappointed. They even designed their own hand-blown beer glasses. Just make sure to take home a growler or two with you. Although very popular with the locals, San Tan is well worth a trip across town! SCOTTSDALE Blu Burger Grille 20511 N. Hayden Rd. Richard Villa Raised in the urban city of Compton, California, Richard Villa always knew he wanted to make people laugh. While driving home one night, the neon lights of the Irvine Improv called his name - “Hey Richard!” Seizing the moment of amateur night, Richard grabbed the microphone, went on stage, and has not stopped since. Using stories of his childhood, Richard Villa turned basic experiences into autobiographical satirical humor that depict life for Latinos and other minorities in the United States. With his comedy and thorough understanding of his audience, Villa became the first Latino to ever host the renowned Hollywood Improv on Friday nights. His ability to appeal to the audience earned him a special invitation by the U.S. Military to perform for the troops on the “Combat Comedy Tour” which included Iraq, Unit, May, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Djibouti, and Saudi Arabia. In 2005, Vanguard Cinema released Richard’s 1st DVD, called “Richard Villa: Performing This Way.” Now being hailed as “the leader” for the new generation of Latino Comics, Richard Villa exemplifies dedication to making other people laugh.

Craig Robinson hosts as five comics try to wow the audience in “Last Comic Standing” on NBC.

“30 Rock” fans know him mainly for his hilarious work as harried producer Pete Hornberger, but these days Scott Adsit is focusing primarily on “Mary Shelley’s Frankenhole,” a macabre stop-motion animation comedy series airing Sundays in Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim lineup. The series, inspired by longtime Adsit collaborator Dino Stamatopoulos’ obsessive affection for the vintage Universal monster movies, was greenlit by Cartoon Network after the channel canceled the duo’s previous project, “Moral Orel,” after three seasons. “Our concept is that Dr. Frankenstein is now immortal, because he had discovered the secrets of life and death,” Adsit explains, “and he is kind of bored, so he sets up these time portals, or Frankenholes, out on the lawn of the castle, so people from history can come to him and ask him for advice and help and general surgical things. For example, we have LBJ arriving on the castle doorsteps with the body of JFK in a bag, and he wants his brain put into JFK’s body so he can be a more attractive and effective leader – but mostly so he can (make love to) Marilyn Monroe. So our pop culture references aren’t going to be Tom Cruise as much as Ron Howard and Gandhi and Elke Sommer.” Adsit first met his “30 Rock” boss Tina Fey when they both were working at Chicago’s fabled Second City comedy troupe. “Tina was quiet,” Adsit recalls. “I remember the first time I saw her, she was in this huge parka and big glasses and short hair, kind of mousy. She joined our cast and was polite and took it slow, but when she finally hit the ground, she was running, and she became a very creative force in that group of six actors. She was brilliant then, but you didn’t see it unless she chose to show it to you.” AZWeeklyMagazine.com

NAME: Jamie Bestwick BIRTHPLACE: Derbyshire County, England BIRTH DATE: July 8, 1971 ROAD TO STARDOM: When Bestwick was 10 he would borrow a friend’s bike and jump off curbs. That love for riding turned serious when in his mid20s he quit his job inspecting airplane engines to take a shot at vert riding full time. In 1996 he and his wife left their native England for the States, and that year he competed in his first X Games, placing third.

“Safe”

is not a word often associated with the X Games, the near death-defying action-sports trick show that celebrates its 16th summer anniversary this week with a four-day gathering in Los Angeles. Then again, there’s rarely, if ever, been an athlete who has been as successful in these Games as has Jamie Bestwick, the vert rider extraordinaire who is about as safe a bet to win gold as one could be in this competition.

10 a.m. on A ESPN Today, NASCAR makes its annual pilgrimage to the hallowed grounds of Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Brickyard 400. Jimmie Johnson made history here last year on the 2.5-mile oval, capitalizing on a pit-road speeding penalty to the dominant car of Juan Pablo Montoya to capture his second consecutive NASCAR win at Indy and third in the last four years. He’ll return to defend his title against the likes of Montoya, Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin and others.

This Friday the Hotel Theodore will be changing up their pool party and making it into a night time event. BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW...

PREMIER MARGARITA MENU

THE COLOR OF TEQUILA Just as you can’t judge a book by its cover, you can’t judge a Tequila by its color. In fact, the majority of Gold (Oro) Tequilas are artificially colored with caramel coloring, while some of the finest aged Reposado, Añejo and Extra Añejo Tequilas acquire a golden color from the wooden barrels in which they age. Similarly, there are Silver (Blanco) Tequilas ranging from high-quality brands made from 100% Weber Blue Agave, to cheap, low-grade mixto brands that contain only the minimum 51% Agave. There is simply no way to determine quality solely by a Tequila’s color.

As far as legendary video game titles are concerned, few stand up to the longevity and luster of Blizzard’s 1998 smash hit “StarCraft.” The sci-fi, realtime strategy game not only redefined the genre, acting as a model for future knockoffs and wannabes, but created a smooth online experience thanks to its Battle.net online community. While other blockbuster titles slowly fade away into gaming history, “StarCraft” has, more than 12 years later, held its place as the epitome of strategy gaming. With its bevy of awards and staying power in the gaming community, it was only a matter of time until Blizzard tried to improve on greatness with “StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty.”

“Wings of Liberty” is the first of three single-player campaigns that places you in the role of “StarCraft” veteran Jim Raynor. You’ll lead the grizzled grunt and his trusted Terran followers as they attempt to defend themselves against the other warring factions – the buglike Zerg and the psibased Protoss. As the campaign progresses and the story unfolds, you’ll be given the opportunity to steer the story using branching, nonlinear missions that may affect important characters or entire planets. “Wings of Liberty” has managed to retain all of the gameplay that is found in the original “StarCraft” while at the same time evolving its graphics, sound and depth.

Thursday, August 12th at Celebrity Theatre

Tickets are on sale now for singer, songwriter, music producer, actor, comedian, satirist and parodist Weird Al Yankovic live in concert at the intimate Celebrity Theatre at 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 12th. Yankovic often describes his performances as “a rock and comedy multimedia extravaganza” with an audience that “ranges from toddlers to geriatrics.” The foremost song parodist of the MTV era “Weird Al” Yankovic carried the torch of musical humor more proudly and more successfully than any performer. In the world of novelty records -- a genre noted for its extensive back catalog of flashesin-the-pan and one-hit wonders -- Yankovic was king, scoring smash after smash mocking everything from new wave to gangsta rap. Since his first-aired song in 1979, a parody of the popular “My Sharona” by

In 2006, nearly three decades into Yankovic’s career, his single “White & Nerdy” from the album Straight Outta Lynwood cracked the Billboard Top Ten – a first for Al! Coming soon, Yankovic’s 13th album to be released sometime later this year. American sailor Jerry Collins was a critical figure in reinventing and introducing tattoos in the middle class in the 1970s and 1980s. Sailor Jerry wanted to improve the Western style, which he saw as primitive and abrupt, and started to use the style, colors, and imagery of Japanese tattooing as well as their belief that the entire body acts as a canvas. He argued that the Japanese’s sophisticated and spiritual style could move the American tattoo from is “primitive” state to a credible art form.

Japan: Tattoo Imagery and Sophistication While tattooing diminished in the West, it had ancient and pervasive roots in the Pacific where it held a significant cultural significance. The Ainu traditionally wore facial tattoos and likely imported the practice into Japan. Indeed, ancient Japanese clay figures recovered from tombs dating from 3000 B.C. had engraved or tattooed faces and most likely represented living individuals who could accompany the dead on their journey to the underworld. During the Kofun period (A.D. 300-600), facial tattoos took on a negative association and

were used as a form of punishment and to identify the untouchable classes, the hinin and the eta. The modern Japanese tattoo covering the front and back of the torso as well as the arms and legs developed in the Edo period (1600-1800) and was practiced by large segments of the lower class. The imagery and style of the full-body tattoo was probably derived from the Chinese novel Shui-hi Chua (Suikoden in Japanese), which was popular in the early nineteenth century. The versions illustration by Kuniyoshi showed scenes of legendary battle with mythical heroes and warriors that had creatures surrounded by highly stylized waves, wind bars, flowers, cherry blossoms, chrysanthemums, and peonies. Pictures from this novel and from the wood-block prints of that century came to form the iconographic vocabulary for modern Japanese tattooing (DeMello 2000). The fullbody tattoo later was discouraged by Japanese authorities and began to mark questionable groups such as prostitutes and entertainers. These “undesirables” often embellished their own tattoos with images of their own choice, both transforming the tattoo’s original meaning and giving rise to the Irezumi or Yakuza (the criminal underground). THE BEST NAMES IN CIGARS

PUFF! Lady Jasmine Cigar Diva Yes my dear, you do. Though there are many inexpensive plastic “Tupperdors” being sold these days, none can do the job of an authentic cedar-lined humidor box. Although the plastic devices may have an attractive price, they will not provide the air circulation or humidity regulation needed for cigars to age. At best, a plastic Tupperdor will prevent your cigars from drying out, while a cedar-lined wooden humidor box allows for the slow and steady release of air and exchange of gasses created during a cigar’s maturation process. An airtight plastic humidor will normally over-humidify your cigars and cause them to get moldy or burst open. You can’t rush greatness darling. A wooden humidor is next on your list.

demands that the clothing be as lovely as the setting. Such is the case with China Chow, the stylish host of “Work of Art: The Next Great Artist,” airing Wednesdays on Bravo. As she heads into museums, galleries and studios, while burgeoning artists compete for a show, Chow’s ensembles “try to let the wardrobe somehow suit the challenges or assignments the artists are given every week,” she says. Her show wardrobe is 95 percent samples. Granted, not most of us could fit into these or would be entrusted with them. Designers make a sample, a prototype, usually in a very small size, to entice executive buyers at stores. And, it’s 100 percent couture. She wears Chanel, Thakoon, Fendi, Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney, Jil Sander and Erin Fetherston. Chow also wears Oleg Cassini (vintage), Hussein Chalayan, Derek Lam and Chris Benz. The outfits on the show, mostly dresses, have also been from Proenza Schouler, Jason Wu, Balenciaga and Yves Saint Laurent.
